Er entschärft den Rand des Panzerdeckels und schmirgelt die Innenfläche mit Sand. Der fertige Löffel wird ausprobiert: Ein alter Mann und der junge löffeln eine Wassermelone aus. Auch das Fleisch wird gegessen. Während der Arbeit rauchen beide Männer abwechselnd eine Tabakspfeife.
    Abstract: The Bushmen manufacture their household gear as far as possible from natural materials. To transfer liquid foods they use a special spoon made from the shell of a tortoise. The film shows the technique of making the spoon.

    Abstract: Zwei Buschmänner machen mit dem Springhasenspeer einen Springhasen in seinem Bau aus, haken das Tier mit dem Speer fest und graben es aus. Der Springhase wird zubereitet und über Holzkohle gegart. Während der Wartezeit behandelt der eine Jäger seinen über Halsschmerzen klagenden Jagdgefährten. Er ritzt die Haut des Kranken an der Brust mit einer Rasierklinge und reibt Fett und Holzkohlenasche in die Schnittwunden; dann massiert er Oberkörper und Hals.
    Abstract: Two Bushmen are searching for a springhare warren. After some time one hunter succeeds in putting up and locating a springhare in his warren with the springhare spear. His compagnon hooks the animal and the man digs it out. The animal is disemboweled, sinews, bones and other usable parts are put away. The hare is singed in an open fire, then placed in a pit in the ground and cooked covered with hot charcoal. In the meantime the hunter tattoos his fellow suffering from a sore throat. He rubs a specific "medicinal" fat and ashes into the wounds, then given the man a massage. The treatment takes a long times and when it comes to an end, the hare is properly cooked. The two hunters eat the hare joined by a third man who had been waiting for them in the bush.

    Abstract: Two Bushman women and one girl are gathering food in the veld. They collect roots and tubers, larvae, beetles and berries. The film shows the gatherers passing through the bush as well as the different techniques of collecting. On their way home the women also take firewood with them, back in the camp one woman roasts a handful of larvae in the hot ashes of a fire in front of her hut.

Abschließend werden sie auf einen Sehnenfaden aufgefädelt bzw. angebunden und können nun von der Tochter als eine Art Kette getragen werden.
    Abstract: A Bushman cuts from branches two sticks 30 cm long and one stick 5 cm long. He removes the bark, decorates the sticks, smears them with fat and blackens them. The sticks are tied one after another to a piece of sinew and so will be used by the man's daughter to perform her tasks in the ceremony of initiation. After the initiation, the girl will wear them as a kind of necklace.

Nach einem Fehlschuß auf eine Antilope wird eine andere vom Giftpfeil getroffen, nach langer Verfolgung gestellt und mit Speeren getötet. Die Beute wird zerlegt. Die Jäger stärken sich bei einem Jagdmahl; dann tragen sie die Fleischstücke ins Dorf.
    Abstract: Three G/wi Bushmen pick up the track of a number of gemsboks and follow it for hours through the bush. After a bad shoot they hit one gemsbok with a poison arrow and follow its trail. After a long pursuit they bring the animal to bay and kill it with spears. The gemsbok is carefully cut up. The hunters eat some pieces of roasted meat, then transport the meat to the village.

    Abstract: A hunter is cutting to size a block of wood intended for a poison mortar. A friend arrives and is asked by the hunter to take over the task. He does this with skill and artistic ability until the mortar is completed and handed back to the owner. The latter now uses it to mix arrow poison in it. He squeezes the haemolymph of several grubs of Diamphibia simplex and the juice of Citrullus naudinianus into it and mixes this material which is ready for application.

    Abstract: A man softens and stretches a piece of wildebeest hide. Selecting the best portions, he cuts two large pieces of skin which he then trims down to the shape of a sandal. He attaches to the sole the front thongs which pass between the first two toes and the leather loop which embraces the heel. Finally he fastens the sandals to his feet by passing the long thongs under the heel strap side of the foot and then tying them over the instep.

    Abstract: Men assembled for the grasshopper game are grunting and stamping a strict rhythm which determines when each man in turn jumps sideways over the back of the man in the centre. It is considered to be a mistake if a man is unprepared for the jump or gets out of rhythm. Such mistakes take place if the jumper's improvised steps in between the individual jumps are too extravagant. The centre man reprimands a player for his distracting behaviour.

    Abstract: Nach dem Zusammensetzen von Spitze (Eisendraht), Muffe, Verbindungsstück und Schaft (Ried) zu einem Pfeil wird der freistehende Hals der Pfeilspitze mit einer Giftmischung überzogen. Das Gift besteht aus der Haemolymphe der Larven von Diamphidia simplex (Käfer) und einem Wurzelsaft, der als Giftleim dient.
    Abstract: The making and assembly of an arrow, consisting of point, sleeve, link-shaft and reed-shaft is shown. First the tip is forged from a piece of fencing wire and shaped with a file. The reed-shaft, already cut to size, is then reinforced at both ends. A small reed is shaped into a sleeve, and reinforced with sinew. The shaft of the tip is wrapped with sinew and then glued into the sleeve. The sleeve is placed onto the link-shaft and is assembled with the reed-shaft. The shaft of the tip is then coated with a poison compound mixed in the poison mortar. It consists of haemolymph of Diamphidia simplex larvae and the juice of a tuber as glue.

    Abstract: A man twirls a bowstring from pieces of sinew while his colleague works on the bowstaffe. He straightens a piece of a raw wood over the fire after debarking it. Then he tapers the ends and smoothes the bowstaffe. For reinforcement he wraps the ends and middle of the staffe with sinew. In one of the ends he attaches a small stub of leather. The bowstring is attached to the top end of the bow and then to the bottom end (with the leather stub) around which it is looped. This aids in anchoring the string under tension. The correct tone of the string reveals its correct tension.

Das geschieht durch Leimen und Umwickeln mit Sehnen. Am Speerende wird ein angespitztes Stück starken Drahtes wie ein Fischhaken befestigt.
    Abstract: Three thin, long branches are debarked and straightened, then cleaned and trimmed. The ends are tapered so that they can be smoothly joined or spliced to form a springhare spear. To do this the joints are glued with gum and wrapped with sinew. The end of the spear is fitted with a strong piece of sharpened wire to form a hook (similar to a fishhook). It is fastened with strong sinew lashings.

    Abstract: Fünftägige Zeremonie für eine Initiandin beim Einsetzen der Menarche. Das Mädchen wird in einer isolierten Einzelhütte untergebracht. Am fünften Tag wird es geschmückt und verläßt die Hütte, während Männer und Frauen einen Fruchtbarkeitstanz aufführen.
    Abstract: The film, a compressed version of a five day ritual, shows an initiate sitting in her hut being stripped of her jewellery, capped, and painted. She is then carried to an especially built isolation hut and placed on grass while women dance the eland dance around it. Her period of isolation and teaching ends on the fifth day when she is turned around, washed, decorated, anointed, and face-painted to resemble a gemsbok brow. She is ritually introduced to all the objects of her daily life and to her foods and induced to shoot at a gemsbok shield with a man's especially protected weapon. Her ritual being a rebirth, the girl is led out of the hut and assisted in walking while men and women dance the eland-bull-fertility dance around the hut. Next day she is led round the village to receive presents, to meet the people and bring luck to their homes.

    Abstract: Buschmänner werfen einen flachen Sandhaufen auf und begießen ihn mit Wasser. Dann schleudern sie mit großer Kraft dünne Holzstöcke gegen die abgeflachte Vorderseite des Sandhaufens, wovon diese bei geschicktem Wurf in Wurfrichtung abprallen und in hohem Bogen weiterfliegen. Das Spiel ist kein Wettstreit, sondern eine Geschicklichkeitsübung. Ein Teil des Films zeigt die athletischen Bewegungen der Männer in Zeitdehnung.
    Abstract: Men prepare a flat mound of wet sand which they use as a surface from which to ricochet at great speed a straight stick. It is a game of skill played noncompetitively. The athletic movements of the players are also recorded in slow motion.

    Abstract: Hunters, laden with meat, arrive in the village and are feted by the women. They are given water from ostrich-eggshell containers. A female initiate is led ceremonially from her isolation hut to "see" the meat. A hunter gives her teacher a piece, part of which is ritually roasted, sprinkled with scrapings from two medicines suspended in a bundle around her neck and fed to her; the rest is cooked. While chewing it, she spits on her teacher's hand who, with this saliva, massages the initiate's stomach and throat thus releasing her from this meat taboo.

Durch Schlagen auf Stein wird die Rinde gelöst und in einem Stück abgezogen. Dieses Rohr wird am unteren Ende mit der Haut eines Antilopenskrotums verschlossen und mit Sehnen verstärkt.
    Abstract: Two men uncover a root of the camelthorntree and from it cut a straight piece. One of the men removes all the root "eyes", debarks both ends and slightly whittles down the diameter of the wood. In a prepared hot bed of sand he buries and roasts the root. With a spray of water he cools and shrinks its bark. By pounding the end of the free wood on a log he finally succeeds in slipping the bark tube off the stem. He seals one end of this tube with a wet gemsbok scrotum and reinforces it with evenly spaced loops of sniew, which prevents the quiver from cracking.

In a circle the women make holes for the long branches with their digging sticks, and at the top incline these towards each other. Then they place numerous smaller branches between this frame-work in such a way that they all support each other. They thatch the frame by covering it with tussocks of grass, starting at the bottom and completing the task at the top. Finally they clean the sand inside the hut and smooth it down to make the hut ready for occupation.

    Abstract: "Jäger" stellen sich im Kreis auf, mit der "Oryx-Antilope" in der Mitte, die gegen ihre Verfolger Angriffe und Scheinangriffe vorführt. Die "Jäger" versuchen, diesen durch Gegenbewegungen zu entgehen, aber auch sie zu treffen (strikter Rhythmus durch Fußstampfen und lautes Exhalieren). Bei dem Spiel kam es zu einer langen Auseinandersetzung.
    Abstract: A group of men, assembled more or less in a circle, are playing the gemsbok game with one of them, the "gemsbok", in the centre. He mounts attacks and mok-attacks against his assailants, the "hunters", who try to anticipate his intention and not only carry out the correct counter movements, but who also bait him. All this is done in a dancing manner, in accordance with a strict rhythmic pattern, produced by the vocal accompaniment of the players. When one of the "hunters" runs a course which crosses the path of another, who is the target of the "gemsbok", the game is stopped with loud words of protest. The new game that then starts becomes more co-ordinated and aesthetically more beautiful.

    Abstract: Eine ältere Frau mischt Holzkohle einer Heilpflanze (Ipomoea bolusiana) mit Fett zu einer Paste. Mit einem Tatauierungsmesser bringt sie feine Schnitte an Stirn und Schläfen einer jungen Frau an. In die Schnittwunde reibt sie die Paste, die nach dem Verheilen eine dauernde Schwärzung verursacht.
    Abstract: Carbonized wood of a medicinal herb is mixed with fat. This mixture is rubbed into the wounds of parallel rows of cuts applied to the forehead and cheekbones. After healing these cuts remain permanently visible as black lines.

    Abstract: Starke Stengel des Erograstis-Grases werden mit gedrillter Schnur aus Kalahari-Sisal (Sansevieria scabrifolia) zu einer Matte geknüpft. Mit dieser Matte werden die gerösteten Kerne der Tsama-Melone aus der Asche gesiebt. Die Kerne werden zerstampft, mit Wasser zu Brei verarbeitet und in das Gesicht gerieben.
    Abstract: A man makes a long stout string of the fibres of the Kalahari sisal, while his wife arranges several shafts of stout grass parallel to each other on the ground. Taking a string, she locates its middle and loops it around the end of one of the grass pieces. The she passes the ends of the string under and over, alternating with each blade of grass until she has fastened, both next to each other and parallel, enough grass for the mat. She continues binding these together by going back and forth across the mat until she reaches the other end of it. To wash she roasts seeds of the tsama melon in hot sand and ashes. With her mat she sieves out all the sand and ashes until only roasted seeds and wood particles (which she removes manually) are left in the sieve. These seeds she stamps to a meal in the mortar. This she permeates with water to form a paste and rubs it over her face. When it is dry she brushes it off and appears oiled and clean.

    Abstract: Steenbokhaut wird bearbeitet: Spannen, Trocknen, Schaben; nach einer Behandlung mit Fett und heißem Wasser Enthaaren, Walken mit der Hand. Die Halsgegend der bearbeiteten Haut wird nach Anfeuchten mit Löchern versehen. Der Köcher wird in die Haut gesteckt und verschnürt. Die beim Trocknen entstehende Spannung gibt dem Köcher festen Halt. Die Haut der Vorder- und Hinterläufe wird zu Tragriemen zusammengebunden. An ihnen wird eine Schlaufe für den Bogen und eine Tasche für die Speerspitze angebracht.
    Abstract: A hunter skins a snared steenbok in such a manner that he is able to pull the skin over its head. It is then stretched (inside out) over two vertical springy sticks planted in the ground. The bottom of the skin is pegged out in a circle on the ground. When dry the skin is scraped on its underside, rubbed with fat, and soaked with hot water. It is then turned outside in and plucked of all its hairs. Then the skin is kneaded between the hands until dry and thoroughly soft. The neck-region is again moistened. Small eyelets are cut into the end of the neck-region so that a loop for closing this end can be threaded through them. The bag is then turned inside out again and the quiver is pushed hard into the narrow neck-region. When the moist neck section of the skin has dried here, it contracts tightly around the quiver. The legs are tied together to form carrying straps. A loop for the bow and a small pocket for the spearpoint are added as a final embellishment.

The adze quickly loses its edge and is frequently sharpened. They rub fat and warm water into the skin and thoroughly permeate it. In this condition they knead and work the skin until it is dry and soft. It is given to a girl as a cloak.

    Abstract: Aus Kalahari-Sisal (Sansevieria scabrifolia) drillt ein Buschmann auf dem Oberschenkel Fäden; je zwei davon zwirnt er zu einer Schnur. Eine dünne Schnur wird als Schlaufe etwa 1 m vor dem Ende in die dicke Schnur gespleißt. Sie nimmt das kleine Holzstückchen auf, mit dem die Falle gesichert wird.
    Abstract: An old man extracts, with his digging stick and under pressure of his foot, the fibres of the Kalahari sisal. He then rolls together small bundles of these by twirling them in a distal direction on his thighs. Two such rolled bundles are spun together to one string by twirling them distally as well but then shaping the string with a quick proximal movement of the hand. New bundles are continuously spliced into the ends until the twine is of sufficient length. Then the entire twine is cleaned by rubbing it with leaves. Loops at the ends prevent the twine from unravelling. A thin piece of string with an end-loop is spliced into the twine. A small twig is attached within the loop. This completes the assembly of a snare.

    Abstract: An elder and his wife pack the last of their belongings, rise and join the other villagers in readiness for departure. In a straight line women, children, and old men depart while the men hive off to one side to hunt. Small children are carried in satchels, older ones walk and are later, when tired, carried by their maternal uncles. Along their route the women stop to collect "veld" food. They reach their predetermined site, clear it, collect firewood, arect shelters and sleeping nests. The patriarch builds a fire from which all the others are lit. The hunters arrive later to a place worthy of human habitation.

    Abstract: Under a large tree with a strong overhanging branch boys clear the ground. Far out over their clearing they suspend from the branch a swing-like loop and adjust it so that a boy sitting in it touches the ground with his feet. The "ostrich" sitting in the swing rapidly runs in the circle prescribed or permitted by the swing while another tries to catch him. The twisting strap of the swing lifts the "ostrich" so that he just barely touches the ground. His rapid gait with lifted knees thus resembles that of the ostrich.

    Abstract: A group of men, arranged more or less in a line, is facing, challenging, and baiting the "gemsbok". There are mock-charges and regular charges by the "gemsbok" and correct and faulty avoidances by the "hunters". Several times a man is caught by the "gemsbok" as the group continously changes sides with him. This "hit", however, does not induce the men to change the "gemsbok". This takes place later without apparent reason. The game is beautifully played in strict adherence to rhythm by the "hunters" and the "gemsbok".

    Abstract: Am Ende der Fährte einer Steenbok-Antilope errichtet ein Jäger eine Schwippgalgenfalle aus einem armdicken Baum, den er mit einer Leine in Bogenform spannt. Das untere Ende der Leine sichert er in einer Mulde und versieht es mit einem Abzugsmechanismus. Den Rest legt er als Schlinge aus. Am nächsten Morgen findet er eine verendete Antilope in seiner Falle.
    Abstract: A hunter locates the run of a steenbok and blocks all the other passages between the bushes so that the antelope is forced to pass through one place only. After selecting a large, suitable, springy branch, he anchors this in the ground at the passage point. To it he attaches the snare and fastens it exactly in the passage with its loop open and its trigger mechanism set and attached to a peg. The loop is carefully hidden under grass and sand. The next day the hunter finds a dead steenbok in the snare.

Der Treffer wird durch Laut und Spiel angedeutet. Wenn das Spiel unordentlich wird, unterbricht es der "Dachs" und rügt seine Mitspieler.
    Abstract: Men are playing the badger game during which rhythmically determined attacks are made by the "badger", crawling on the ground. Similar rhythmically determined avoidance movements, associated with verbal and physical baiting of the "badger", are carried out by the "hunters". The group of men gives the appearence of a swinging dancing rhythmical whole. When it threatens to disintegrate slightly the "badger" - an old man - stops the game to reprimand his players, before resuming to a lovely co-ordinated finish.

    Abstract: A woman breaks up an ostrich eggshell into small 1 sq cm pieces and then, with an awl, she drills through each a small hole. All the fragments are now strung on a strong piece of thread made of sinew. Holding each raw bead individually between her fingers she chips it until it is approximately round, working with a horn of harebeest (hammer) on a stone (anvil). Having completed all the chips, she oils them and then holds them tightly strung over a flat surface. She grinds them evently round with a piece of calcrete out of which a half-round groove has been gouged. The result is a string of equal sized and smooth beads.

    Abstract: Eine angefeuchtete Gazellenhaut wird gefaltet und halbkreisförmig zugeschnitten. Kurze Lederstreifen werden als Trag- sowie Schmuckriemen mit gedrillten Sehnen an die Tasche genäht. Die unteren werden ausgefranst, die beiden oberen durch Umwickeln verstärkt. Zuletzt wird die Öffnung an der Faltseite in die Tasche geschnitten.
    Abstract: Sewing thread is spun from sinew. A skin is slightly moistened, straightened and folded in half, and with a sharpened knife cut into a semicircular shape. The cut edges are sewn with small evently spaced stitches. From scarps five straps are cut and sewn into the bag. Three of these are tasselated. The two top carrying straps are reinforced and tied together. Finally an opening is cut into the bag.

    Abstract: Eine Frau verschließt das hintere Ende einer kleinen Schildkrötenschale mit einer klebrigen Masse, die sie aus der Rinde des Kameldornbaumes (Acacia luederitzii) hergestellt hat. In die Vorderkante des Panzers bohrt sie kleine Löcher, in denen sie Lederriemen befestigt. Auf diese zieht sie Perlen aus Straußeneierschalen. Die Dose füllt sie mit einem Puder aus aromatischen Kräutern und mit einer Puderquaste aus Fell.
    Abstract: A gluey putty-like substance is prepared from the bark of a shrub by a woman who employs this to close the rear end of a small tortoise shell. Into the front edge of the shell she drills various holes, into which she threads small leather tassels. Rows of ostrich-eggshell beads are then strung onto these. The "compact" completed, the woman fills it with ground aromatic herbs and a fur "powder puff".

    Abstract: Auf starke Fäden aus Sehnen fädelt eine Frau je vier Perlen in einer Reihe. Diese Viererreihen verbindet sie miteinander, bis ein Band in ihrem Kopfumfang entsteht. An Ober- und Unterseite knüpft sie weitere Einzelperlen quer zu den Viererreihen, bis das Stirnband etwa 5 cm breit ist.
    Abstract: A woman begins her work by preparing a strong fine sinew thread. Then from her string of unused beads, she removes four at a time and threads them up in parallel rows until she has made an entire band. This is joined at the proper length to fit around the head. On either side of this band she fastens one bead at a time, going round and round. Each of them is threaded and then the thread is passed through the thread of the bead lying below. When the desired width has been reached, the last bead is securely fastened.Such a band is about 5 cm wide.

Dazu stoßen die Männer heulende Rufe aus, mit deren Hilfe sie das angenommene Übel von sich werfen (tranceartiger Zustand). Die Frauen erhöhen die emotionale Erregung durch ululierendes Singen und Händeklatschen.
    Abstract: The film, a compression of several hours, begins before everyone has arrived at the scene of dancing. Music and rhythm are still disorganized. Slowly seriousness creeps into the atmosphere and men shuffling around the circle begin to administer to the women by placing their hands on the latter's heads or shoulders, thereby taking into their bodies the evil with which the harmful God /oa has charged the women. Men in a trance become evident. Their wailing prayers are heard. Explosively retching, they expel the evil they have taken into their bodies from the women. The film continues with a highly emotionally charged atmosphere in which men are trance dancing and women, while watching over them to avert injury, stimulate them to greater efforts with their ululating songs and rhythmic clapping.

    Abstract: A hunter trims and shapes a stick for his spear handle. He drills a hole in the end of it to receive the shaft of the spear blade. Around it he wraps a reinforcing of sinew. Then he forges a spear blade at the end of a piece of iron, employing such simple tools as a stone anvil and chisel-like hammer. With a file he finally shapes and sharpens the blade and tapers the spear blade's shaft. This is then glued into the hole of the handle and the spear is completed.

In den Händen tragen sie ihre Holzkreisel mit den Peitschen, deren Schnüre um den oberen zylinderförmigen Teil der Kreisel gewickelt sind. Sie werfen damit nach bereits "stehenden" Kreiseln, um diese zu Fall zu bringen oder fortzuschleudern.

    Abstract: Ein Mädchen aus dem Dorf Ban Alm zieht die Kettfäden in die Litzen der Webschäfte und in die Rietlücken des Weberkammes. Die Kette wird im Webstuhlrahmen am Warenbaum befestigt und an einem Pflock festgebunden, der als Kettbaum dient. Die Schäfte werden mit den Tritten verbunden, und nach dem Ordnen der Kette wird mit dem Weben begonnen. Die Mutter hilft bei der Arbeit.
    Abstract: The end loops of the lease in the fixed warp are cut, and the crossed warp-threads alternately threaded into the heddles of the front and back shafts. Then the warp threads are threaded into the reed by means of a procupine quill. The warp is fixed on to the frame of the loom and bound firmly to a peg which is stuck behind the loom and serves as warp-beam. The shafts are connected with the pedals, the weaving process starts after arranging the warp.

    Abstract: Cotton is put into the machine between two rollers which revolve in opposite directions. The cotton fibres are transported through these rollers and are thus separated from the seeds which had remained on them. The upper, thinner iron roller is operated with the feet by means of a connecting rod the lower wooden roller is set in motion by means of a crank handle.

Der Korbdeckel wird in Diagonalgeflecht hergestellt.
    Abstract: A bamboo basket, which is already finished is given a plaited coat to strengthen it. The plaitings round the bottom and the upper half of the basket run parallel to the edges whereas that covering the lower half is an open three-directional plaiting. A diagonal plaiting technique is used to make the lid.

Dann stellt er eine Peitsche her, deren Schnur er um den Kreisel wickelt. Dieser wird durch Wegwerfen und Ziehen an der Peitsche in Drehung versetzt.

For strengthening a nail of hard wood is put into its peak. Then a whip is made out of wooden stick and a twisted cord of fibre. With this whip, the whipping top is set rotating.

    Abstract: During the new year festivities the ceremonial ball game of the young men and the maidens is played in the village square. The partners form two lines facing each other, throw rag-balls from one line to the other, and accompany the game with recitations and songs. Nearby, the younger boys play the badmintom game, in the course of which feathered missiles of bamboo are batted to and fro with wooden raquets. In a different part of the village several boys are playing the "top-spinning game". During these games, the new year is heralded by a man shooting a flint-look musket.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus Huye Luang stellt aus zwei Bambusröhren mit Hilfe eines Haumessers eine etwa 57 cm hohe Wasserpfeife her. Die Fugen dichtet er mit Rindertalg ab. In das dickere Saugrohr füllt er Wasser; er stopft Tabak in den Pfeifenkopf und raucht die Pfeife.
    Abstract: The upper joint of a bamboo cane of about 60 cm, with two joints, is pierced with a rod of wood. In the lower third of the cane a hole is incised with a bush knife into which hole a thin bamboo rod is diagonally introduced. The joint is sealed with tallow. The thin bamboo rod was cut off immediately to one side of a joint, thus producing a funnel-shaped form like the bowl of a pipe. Water is now poured into the thicker cane, tobacco is filled into the bowl, and the pipe is smoked.

    Abstract: A piece of wood is chopped from a tree-stump with an axe and cut with the cutting knife to a cross-bow shaft. The position of the bow is chiselled out. The bamboo bow is whittled, tried several times in the shaft, and then wedged firmly in position. After notch, groove, and trigger have been positioned on the shaft, the bow is strung with twisted hemp fibres. After the elasticity test, arrows are whittled and trial shots carried out.

    Abstract: Ein Schmied und sein Gehilfe aus Ban Ayo verarbeiten Bandeisen zu einer Klinge, die mit ihrem Eisendorn in den Holzschaft eingebrannt wird. Dann wird die Schneide mit einem anderen Haumesser geschärft und an einem Schleifstein feingeschliffen.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Ban Ayo bauen Männer für ein jungvermähltes Paar in Nachbarschaftshilfe ein Giebeldachhaus. Beim Einsetzen des ersten Hauspfostens wird ein Hundeopfer für den Hausgeist dargebracht.
    Abstract: On placing the first wooden pillars for a house a sacrifice is made to the house-spirit. When all supporting pillars are erected, the bamboo beams and joists are attached. A bamboo framework is then made for the sleeping-place. Subsequently the two ridge pillars are erected and the ridge pole laid across. The rafters and the purlins are fixed on to the rood framework which is then covered with grass mats. The ridge consists of two beams between which sharpened bamboo stakes are pierced in order to fix the grass mats on to the ridge. The ridge is adorned with turrets fixed on top of the smoke-openings. The door is set in after the walls, made of plaited bamboos, are set in.

    Abstract: A smith pours silver from a clay crucible; he then hammers out the resulting ingot into a thin rod which he draws into wire by means of a wire-drawing plate. He then gives it a spiral form by turning it on an iron windlass. This spiral is divided by means of a chisel into small silver rings which are linked together to form a chain.

    Abstract: Ein junger Mann fällt im Wald einen Upasbaum und bringt ihn ins Dorf, entrindet und schneidet ihn zurecht. Er klopft die Bastschicht mit Hilfe zweier Holzschlegel als Schlauch von dem 1,7 m langen (11 cm Durchmesser) Stamm, dehnt sie und hängt sie zum Trocknen zwischen zwei Pfosten auf. Am folgenden Tag schneidet er den Baststoff auf. Die Matte ist 1,5 x 0,6 m groß.
    Abstract: A tree is felled with hewing-knife, a block of about 6 ft. is cut off the trunk and taken to the village. The outer layer of the bark is separated by scratching, the bast layer beaten with a wooden hammer and rolled up to form a torus. After the beating the roll is unrolled into a tubular shape and hung to dry on a pole. On the following day the tubular piece of bast is taken down and cut open.

    Abstract: Ein Mann bereitet sich eine Lagerstatt im Freien (wegen der für die Filmaufnahmen günstigeren Lichtverhältnisse), breitet seine Rauchutensilien aus, reinigt den Pfeifenkopf, erweicht und knetet ein Opiumkügelchen, stopft es in die Pfeife, entzündet es über der Ölflamme und inhaliert den Rauch.
    Abstract: An opium smoker prepares a place where he can recline, spreads out his smoking materials, cleans the bowl of the pipe, kneads a drop of opium, puts it into his pipe, lights it at the oil flame, and inhales the smoke.

    Abstract: Während der Vater auf einem Feld in Huye Luang mit einem dreiklingigen Ritzmesser die Mohnkapsel mehrmals einritzt, kratzen seine Frau und seine Tochter mit einem Schaber von den am Vortage eingeritzten Kapseln den inzwischen eingedickten Saft, das Rohopium, ab und wickeln es in Blütenblätter.
    Abstract: The poppy heads are cut open with a three-edged knife. A milky juice comes out of the incisions. The thickened milky juice which while thickening changed its colour to blackish-brown is collected with a scraper from the heads which were cut the day before. It is then wrapped up in a flower petal.

    Abstract: Ein Mädchen aus Ban Alm stellt aus weißen Hühnerfedern auf einem Bogen, der mit einer aus Zwirnsfaden bestehenden Doppelsehne bespannt ist, eine Schnur her. Die fertige Zierschnur wird rot gefärbt und an einem Ende mit einer mehrfarbigen Quaste aus Baumwollfäden versehen.
    Abstract: Two cotton threads are strung on a bamboo bow, the lower part of a small chicken feather the quill of which has been cut off is stuck between the two threads. The feather is wound around both threads and the top of the feather is again stuck between the two threads. The feather which has thus been fixed to the threads is pushed aside with a needle. The finished cord is dyed red and gets a multicoloured tassel of cotton threads attached to one end.

    Abstract: An Akha, in full tribal dress and richly adorned with silver jewelry, performs a dance in which he executes stylized combat movements with the sword and scabbard he carries in his hands. With his feet, legs, knees, and hips he takes the postures which are customary in Akha male-dancing.

    Abstract: Ein Mädchen aus dem Dorf Ban Alm bereitet das Garn zum Schären vor: Aufwickeln, Strangbildung, Schlichten mit Reismehlwasser, Trocknen. Nach dem Abwickeln des Garnes mit einer Kreuzhaspel werden sechs Schärpflöcke in die Erde geschlagen, und die Kette wird von zwei Frauen geschärt.
    Abstract: Thread from a wholly spun spindle is wound into a ball. The thread from the ball runs through a hollow bamboo stick which is held in the hand; then it is wound into a skein with the help of a double-T-shaped handreel. The skein is taken off the reel, starched in a solution of rice flour, and then strung between two poles to dry. When the skein is dry it is put on a reel and the thread is unwound into a basket. Six thread-beams are knocked into the ground and two women fix the warp.
