    Kurzfassung: Eine alte Frau bäckt ein traditionelles Festgebäck (Baumkuchen) aus Zucker, Zitronenschale, Mehl. Den dünnflüssigen Teig gießt sie schichtenweise auf eine hölzerne Rolle, die auf einem Gestell vor dem Feuer gedreht wird. Das Gebäck entsteht aus vier Schichten und wird mit weißem und rosa Zuckerguß verziert.
    Kurzfassung: With the aid of her husband an old woman makes a Prügelkrapfen, a traditional festival pastry. From sugar, lemon peel, eggs and flour she makes a thinly liquid dough and pours it in layers upon the Prügel (cudgel), a wooden roll covered with paper, mounted in a frame and turned round on its axis in front of the fire by operating a handle. The Prügelkrapfen consists of four layers and is made in three hours. Finally it is decorated with white and pink sugar-icing and removed from the cudgel.

    Kurzfassung: Im Schloß Scharnstein im Almtal führen Mitglieder der Rud aus Lambach, junge und alte Einheimische, den Landler und die anschließende Bairisch-Polka auf. Es werden vierzeilige Jodler und Lieder gesungen. Die Begleitmusik besorgt ein Lambacher Spieler auf der diatonischen Ziehharmonika, dem sich drei Spieler aus Wels mit zwei Geigen und einem Kontrabaß hinzugesellt haben.
    Kurzfassung: The film presents an Upper Austrian Landler from Lambach im Traunviertel as it is performed in unbroken tradition this very day (1970) by a group of interested natives, young as well as old ones. According to regional custom the Landler is followed by a Boarischer, that is a Bavarian Polka. The music played in accompaniment is performed by a native musician on the diatonic accordion; he has been joined by three more musicians from the neighbouring Wels, playing two violins and a double bass.

    Kurzfassung: In dem Film wird gezeigt, wie eine Männergruppe, vom Dorf herkommend, auf einen Hügel steigt. Die Gruppe, die schweigend anmarschiert, bringt eine etwa 14 m lange Stange, "Fahne" genannt, mit. Die Kaluscharengruppe wird von einer maskierten Gestalt, dem mutul, und drei Musikanten begleitet. Am Hügel angekommen, folgt der Schwur auf die Fahne. Anschließend wird getanzt. Ins Dorf zurückgekommen, kehren sie beim ersten Haus ein und führen ihre Tänze auf dem Hof auf. Der eine Tänzer wird vom mutul "getötet", der anschließend von der Gruppe gezwungen wird, den "Getöteten" wieder zum Leben zu erwecken. Das Spiel, das anscheinend in einem früheren Transitritus wurzelt, endet mit einem gemeinsamen Tanz. Zwei Kaluscharengruppen begegnen sich und führen unter Einhaltung gewisser Zeremonien (Begrüßung, formelhafte Verhandlung usw.) in einem Wettstreit verschiedene Tänze auf. Im letzten Teil des Films wird gezeigt, wie die Kaluscharengruppe, vom Dorf kommend, auf einen Hügel steigt, um die brauchtümlichen Handlungen der Pfingsttage abzuschließen. Von der "Fahne" werden das Tuch und die Kräuter heruntergenommen, unter den Kaluscharen verteilt, die Fahnenstange hochgestellt und auf ein Zeichen des mutuls losgelassen. In dem Augenblick springen die Männer auseinander und laufen in verschiedenen Richtungen weg. Sobald die Stange auf den Boden aufschlägt, kehren sie um und begrüßen sich gegenseitig, als hätten sie sich lange nichte mehr gesehen. Mit anschließendem Tanz endet der Film.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows a group of men coming from the village up a hill. The group, marching silently, is carrying an approximately 14 m long pole, called the "flag". The kalushar group is accompanied by a masked figure, the mutul and three musicians. Having arrived at the hill the oath on the flag follows. Then there is dancing. When they return to the village they enter the first house and perform their dances in the yard. One of the dancers is "killed" by the mutul, who is then forced by the group to reawake the dead man to life. The game, which seems to be rooted in an earlier transit rite, ends with a dance for all. Two kalushar groups meet and perform several dances in a competition while observing certain ceremonies (greeting, formal parley etc.). The last part of the film shows the kalushar group coming from the village and climbing up a hill to conclude the traditional Whitsun rites. The cloth and the herbs are taken down from the "flag", distributed among the kalushars, the flag pole is hoisted up, and at a sign from the mutul it is let go. At that moment the men spring apart and run away in various directions. As soon as the pole hits the ground they turn round and greet each other as though they had not seen each other for a long time. The film ends with the subsequent dancing.

    Kurzfassung: Gefischt wird in einem Altwasser mit einer Gerätekombination aus Zugnetz und Garnreuse. Die Absperrung erfolgt mit einem sacklosen Zugnetz, das bis auf den Grund reicht und mit Hilfe von Pfählen quer durch das Gewässer gespannt wird. Der eigentliche Fischfang erfolgt durch eine großdimensionierte Garnreuse, die an einer Öffnung seitlich im Netz angebracht ist. Diese Fangmethode zählt zu den Abschließungsfischereien.
    Kurzfassung: The film presents the preparation and carrying-out of fishing in an old branch of the Rhine near Weisweil with a combination of fishing-gears consisting of a drag-net and a weel. This method of catching fish belongs to the techniques of fishing by means of a barrage. Today it is no longer in use in the filmed region. The barrage is done by putting up across the river a drag-net without a bag reaching down to the bottom and attached to stakes. The actual catching is done by a weel of great dimensions placed behind an opening in the centre of the net.

    Kurzfassung: Ein Wachszieher stellt Kirchenkerzen im Gießverfahren her. Er hängt Dochte an das Wachsrad und gießt sie mit erhitztem, flüssigem Wachs an. Nach dem Vorguß werden die Angußkerzen vom Wachsrad abgenommen, auf einem Tisch mit Hilfe des Rollbretts begradigt und mit dem Schneidbrett gestutzt und geformt. Es folgt der endgültige Ausguß der Kerzen wiederum am Wachsrad.
    Kurzfassung: A Lower Austrian wax-chandler makes church candles by the pouring method: He suspends wicks on the wax-wheel and pours heated, liquid wax over them. After the preliminary pouring the so-called tapers are removed from the wheel, straightened on the table by means of the rolling-board and cut and shaped with the carving-board. The candles are then finished by the pouring method on the wax-wheel.

    Kurzfassung: Die Romaria zu Ehren des heiligen Bartholomäus, der als Helfer gegen die "Besessenheit" (Epilepsie, Furcht, Stottern) gilt, findet am 24. August statt. Inhalt dieses Festes sind die Opfergabe von schwarzen Hühnern und das sakrale Tauchen der Kinder im Meer.
    Kurzfassung: Romaria is a religious festivity celebrated in honour of a saint or of a divine intercessor. Characteristic of romarias is a certain religious attitude, which finds expression in the connection of sacred and profane acts. Most of the romarias are held in summer; that of S. Bartolomew do Mar takes place on August 24th. The substance of this romaria is the offering of chickens in the church as well as the "holy dipping" into the sea. Today both concern but children and pass for a remedy for fear.

    Kurzfassung: Flachs wird mit Maschinen und von Hand geerntet und verarbeitet. Anschließend spinnt eine alte Frau auf dem Spinnrad zuerst Leinengarn, dann zwirnt sie zwei Leinenfäden zu einer Schnur zusammen.
    Kurzfassung: In the little village of Hodov the flax harvest has begun. While the men operate the harvesting machines, on impassable places the women draw out the flax by hand. Filipka Bednárová, a woman who lives in one of the cottages in the village, ripples the flax with an iron comb, in order to remove the flax seeds. She drys the bundle of flax in the oven pipe so that she can process it on the breaker and the hackle. Then from the pure, fine flax, she spins linen yarn using a spinning wheel. Finally, with the same spinning wheel, she twists the yarn into thread.

    Kurzfassung: Am Tage des hl. Leonhard (6. Nov.) ziehen Wagen, Reiter und kleine Gruppen zu Fuß von Murnau nach der Leonhardskirche Froschhausen, wo eine Feldmesse abgehalten wird. Danach versammeln sich die Teilnehmer vor der Gastwirtschaft; hier treten auch die Goaßlschnalzer mit ihren langen Peitschen in Aktion.
    Kurzfassung: Since 1927 the St. Leonard's pilgrimage in Murnau has taken place, and it is arranged after the known pilgrimage of Bad Tölz. On the day of St. Leonard (6th November) people on carriages, on horses and others walking in small groups are moving from Murnau to the nerby church St. Leonard in Froschhausen where a camp-service is celebrated on a meadow near the church. After the mass the participants meet in front of the only inn of the village and there perform the so-called Goaßlschnalzer (men with long whips).

    Kurzfassung: Zweitägige Fußwallfahrt am Pfingstsamstag und -sonntag von Holzkirchen bis zum Bogenberg (etwa 70 km). Mitgeführt wird eine 13 m lange "Kerze", ein mit roten Wachssträngen umwickelter Fichtenstamm.
    Kurzfassung: The pilgrimage to the Bogenberg is an impressive survival of the baroque peregrinatio. The film shows the whole procession from Holzkirchen near Vilshofen, along the Danube to the Bogenberg north-east of Straubing (70 km). On this pilgrimage a 13 m long "candle" is carried along with from the town of Bogen to the church of pilgrimage on top of the Bogenberg. This candle is the trunk of a pine-tree covered with stripes of red wax. The film lays a special emphasis on the documentation of the length of this pilgrimage.

    Kurzfassung: Der Caveur transportiert seine Trüffelsau per Auto in ein trüffelfündiges Gebiet des Périgord. Das locker geführte Schwein lokalisiert eine Fruchtstelle und wird durch Futterbelohnung abgelenkt. Der Caveur gräbt die Trüffeln aus, die später auf dem Markt verkauft werden.
    Kurzfassung: It is a unique feature that since long ago, in the Périgord (Southern France) pigs have been used in search of the subterraneous fruits of truffles. Studies of the literature, inquiries and own observations (film) revealed that a good truffle pig shows a spontaneous preference of truffle odour or truffle taste. In searching the truffles, visual orientation does not play any significant role, and even under a thin layer of snow or sleet a good truffle pig can locate fruiting truffles olfactorily. The smallest amount of subterraneous truffles thus located is only about the size of a grain of maize. Truffles are located from a maximum distance of about 5 m. To prevent the truffle from being eaten by the pig the Caveur offers a food reward and digs out to find himself. Often, however, the pig is diverted by a blow with a stick, so that a partial deconditioning may occur.

At Easter it begins with the offering of the sarindar and in September the second part, a water ceremony, takes place. The commemorative festivities end on the 24th and 25th October with a banquet and a mask procession.

    Kurzfassung: Ein 69jähriger Landwirt und Weber webt auf einem zweischäftigen Trittwebstuhl einen buntgestreiften Läufer in Leinenbindung. Die Webkette stellt er aus Leinenzwirn her, als Schußfaden verwendet er schmale, aneinandergenähte Streifen verschiedener farbiger Stoffe. Der Vorgang der Fachbildung und des Webens wird in allen Stadien und aus verschiedenen Blickrichtungen eingehend gezeigt.
    Kurzfassung: Frantisek Anton is a farmer and a weaver. He weaves a coloured, striped carpet runner an a double-strand treadle loom. First he makes the warp for his weaving out of flax yarn. The tools that he uses are a winch, a spooling wheel, a weaving board, a yarn reel and a warping mill. Then he feeds the warp into the loom. He fastens the ends of the warp onto the warp beam by twisting its ends onto the ends of the previous warp which is still in the loom. Then he pulls the warp between the two shafts and the weaving comb, turns it around the breast bar and fastens the front end of the warp onto the take-up beam for the woven cloth. After he has done this he weaves the carpet runner, which is several meters long. He uses narrow, multicoloured strips of cloth which are sewn onto one another for the woof. These strips are wound around large spools with the spool wheel and are layed in a shuttle. All the steps and various aspects of the training for this craft and its practise are shown in detail. After cutting-off the carpet and removing it from the loom the ends of the warp remain in the loom for the next job.

    Kurzfassung: Drei Bräuche am Vorabend des Epiphanias: 1. Maulgabe mit Sakramentalien für Rinder und Pferde. 2. Haus und Stall werden mit benediziertem Weihrauch ausgesegnet, mit Weihwasser besprengt; die Stubentür wird mit den Anfangsbuchstaben der drei Königsnamen und der Jahreszahl versehen. 3. Sampermilch (Semmel mit warmer Milch) wird aufgetischt (Rest für Schweine und Hühner).
    Kurzfassung: The film shows three customs practised on the farms of the thinly settled Lower Alps area of Austria on the evening before the Feast of the Three Wise Men. Between the work (feeding, milking) and the evening meal, the animals are given a so-called Maulgab (Mouth Offering) with churchlike sacraments which is meant to work as a prophylactic against ghosts. Later the house is blessed with consecrated incense. And lastly so-called Sampermilch for a Berchte figure which is supposed to appear as a ghost in the night, is prepared and set out. A few spoonsful of this is eaten and the remainder fed to the pigs and poultry the next morning.

Deutlich werden alle Teile des Spinnrades und ihre Funktion gezeigt, aufmerksam werden auch die Spinnerin und die Bewegungen ihrer Hände verfolgt.
    Kurzfassung: An old farm woman spins on a spinning wheel for an order three spindles of sheeps wool for women's skirts and winds them afterwards with the help of the reel in layers. All parts and functions of the spinning wheel are shown, the camera carefully follows the spinner and the movement of her hands.

    Kurzfassung: Eine alte Bäuerin webt aus Leinengarnresten Tragbänder für Heutragtücher. Sie zieht Kettfäden in das hölzerne Webgitter ein und befestigt das eine Ende der Kette am Fensterbrett, das andere wickelt sie sich um die Taille. Durch Heben und Senken des Webgitters stellt sie Fach und Gegenfach her, durch die sie den auf einen Schützen gewickelten Schußfaden führt.
    Kurzfassung: Even today some peasant women still weave carrying straps for their hay carrrying sheets, using the remnants of flax yarn and a weaving lattice. An old peasant woman pulls the warp yarn into the wooden weaving lattice, feeding it alternately, through its holes and slits. The end of the warp is fastened onto the window seat; the other end she winds around her waist. By moving the lattice, upwards and downwards, she weaves the shed and the countershed through which she leads the woof, which is wound on a pirn. The already woven strap she winds around her waist. Working in this way she uses up the entire length of the taut warp.

    Kurzfassung: The film shows the production of Gouda farm cheese on a farm in Oud-Ade : After the fresh milk is poured into the cheese vat a series of treatments are carried out. The milk turns into cheese crumbs which are then pressed in cheese forms and salted. For the sale of the cheese, the cheese maker and the trader meet in the market place at Leiden. The cheese is officially weighed. Finally the cheese maker receives payment at the inn.

    Kurzfassung: The production of a wooden rake requires a number of manual processes and the application of various woods. In the film you can see the making of a rake-head into which the shank will be introduced. As the production of the film had to be carried out within a short time and with limited film material at disposal the fashioning of the shank could not be recorded. The film brings into focus the precision with which the craftsman works and it is characteristic of him that he signs the finished rake.

Dann setzt sie sich nieder und beweint den Tod der jungen Frau in einem langen, lyrischen, frei erfundenen, monologartigen Klagelied. An anderen Gräbern halten sich auch Frauen auf, die klagen oder Speisen und Gaben austeilen.
    Kurzfassung: A 68-year-old woman enters the cemetery at six o'clock in the morning. She circumambulates the grave of her daughter and incenses it. Then she sits down and laments the death of the young woman in a long lyrical, monologue-like extempore mourning song. There are also women at other graves, lamenting or depositing food and gifts.

    Kurzfassung: After a short depiction of the landscape the film shows the various processes of reed roof thatching: erection of the scaffolding, removing the damaged roof, cutting the bundles of reeds, laying and fastening the reed to the roof structure, covering the ridge with pieces of turf, smoothing and beating the newly covered places, dismantling the scaffold.

    Kurzfassung: Das Verdichten der Wolldecken erfolgt im Wirbelkorb, in dem ein starker Wasserstrahl das Gewebe in ständiger Bewegung hält. Nach dem Trocknen kommen die Decken zum Aufflauschen in die Rauftrommel, dann in die Rumpeltrommel, wo sie mit warmem Wasser behandelt werden. Beide Trommeln werden mit einem unterschlächtigen Schaufelrad betrieben. Nach einem kurzen Ausspülen im Wirbelkorb werden die Decken zum Trocknen aufgehängt.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows how woollen blankets are laid in a whirling basket to be soaked, they are later taken out and hung up to dry. In the next operation the blankets are stretched over a drum. When the drum is turned the blankets are dragged lightly over a bed of nails, and thus roughened. After being treated once more in the whirling basket, the blankets are laid in a tumbling drum. In this work phase, which can last from 14 - 24 hours, the desired compressing of the woven structure takes place. After a short rinse in the whirling basket the blankets are hung up to dry.

    Kurzfassung: Maibäume werden vor allem in Oberbayern errichtet, meist weiß-blau (den bayerischen Landesfarben) bemalt und mit Figurengruppen, Handwerkerzeichen usw. geschmückt. Der Film zeigt, wie der Maibaum in Oderding bei Weilheim mit einem Pferdefuhrwerk zur Gastwirtschaft des Ortes gefahren und dort von einer Gruppe jüngerer Männer aufgestellt wird. Der Film dokumentiert nicht nur den Vorgang des Aufstellens, sondern versucht auch Begleiterscheinungen (spielende Kinder, Blaskapelle usw.) zu zeigen, um die Atmosphäre, in der dieser Brauch abläuft, zu skizzieren. Während Maibäume in den Nachbargemeinden seit vielen Jahren errichtet werden, wurde der erste Maibaum in Oderding im Jahre 1965 aufgestellt.
    Kurzfassung: It is mainly in Upper-Bavaria that maypoles are erected. They are mostly painted in white and blue (the regional colours of Bavaria) and decorated with figures and the signs of the various guilds etc. The film shows how the maypole is transported by a horse-pulled trailer to the local inn of Oderding near Weilheim and there erected by a group of young men. Particularly included are the accompanying activities such as playing children, brassband etc. to demonstrate the peculiar atmosphere. While maypoles have been erected in the surrounding communities for many years, the first maypole in Oderding was seen in 1965.

    Kurzfassung: The film shows the kalushar group dancing in a farm yard, but the main thing is the performance of the death game. One of the dancers is killed by the mutul, who is then forced by the group to reawake the dead man to life. The game, which seems to be rooted in an earlier transit rite, ends with a dance for all.

    Kurzfassung: In einen Nebenarm des Rheins rudert der Fischer sein Boot im Stehen zum Fangplatz. Dort stellt er eine selbstgefertigte Perlonreuse ins Wasser und befestigt sie mit zwei Holzstäben so, daß das Netz sich spannt und seine Eingänge sich öffnen. Dann tarnt er sie mit Schilf. Am zweiten Platz entleert er eine Flügelreuse und macht sie nachher wieder fangfertig, bevor er zur Landestelle zurückfährt.
    Kurzfassung: A fisherman rows his boat in a standing position into a side arm of the Rhine to the catching-place. There he sets a home-made nylon fish trap and fastens it with two wooden rods so that the net tightens and the entrances open. For camouflage he covers it with reed. At a second catching-place he he empties a winged fish trap and prepares it for the next catch. Then he returns to the landing-place.

The work is carried out in the following sequence: readjustment of the sluice board and starting up of the mill, filling the corn into the hopper, lifting the runner with the aid of a lifting device and adjusting the milling course; after conclucing the milling shovelling the flour out, cleaning the place and the stones, removing the unground corn grains from the hopper.

The singer, Saveta Matei, is a woman farmer, 64 years old and has lived in the village since her marriage. The song recorded belongs to the traditional repertoire of the village and is homophone, like all lyrical songs of Roumania. Its melody structure is strophic. The heroic tone and a certain longing are characteristic of this songs.

After the milk has curdled the whey is skimmed off and the curds are put in the straining cloth, pressed and put to ferment in the store-room. The fermented mass is chopped up, salted, kneaded and filled in a skin which is kept in the store-room.

    Kurzfassung: In der Schmiede der Familie Franzoni in Bienno (Provinz Brescia) arbeitet der 85jährige Vater mit seinen drei Söhnen und einem Gehilfen. Sie stellen in Serienproduktion etwa 80 nach oben ausladende Eimer pro Tag her: Vorbereitung des Materials (Eisenplatten aus Schrottbeständen), Formen und Erwärmen der Platten, Hämmern mit Fallhammer (oberschlächtiges Wasserrad) zur Eimerform, Beschneiden, Endbearbeitung, Anbringen von Henkeln.
    Kurzfassung: Working on a forge, whose origins date back to the XVII century A. D., the father and sons of an artisan family of Bienno in the province of Brescia, N. Italy, manufacture, metal buckets for brickwork. They work with slabs of re-usable iron, which are heated in a furnace adapted to naphtha oil-firing. The draught for blowing the furnace is created by an acient system based on the fall of water. The process begins with the preparation of the material. An iron slab is shaped to the form required for a container mould, into which flat beaten-out iron plates are inserted seven at a time. The batch is then heated and pounded into bucket form by a water-powered drop-hammer. After shearing and finishing, the buckets are fitted on two sides with handles and stacked one inside the other. The final product is much wider at the drop than at the bottom, a shape traditionally used for conveying mortar and other light building materials.

    Kurzfassung: The film shows four Saxon folk dances (Ländler, country waltz; Spinnradel, spinning wheel; Tätscher, patting dance; Walzer, waltz) from the parish Großau on the Zibin, performed by eight young couples in the yard of the old parish school. The musical accompaniment is given by the parish orchester with accordion, flügel horn, bass flügel horn, clarinet and prercussion instruments.

    Kurzfassung: Die geseihte Schafmilch wird mit Lab versetzt und die geronnene Masse, nach mehrmaligem Zerschneiden, durch Pressen und Beschweren von der Molke befreit. Der in Stücke geschnittene Käse kommt in Salzwasser, wird dann in Holzbütten gelegt und reihenweise mit Salz bestreut. Wenn keine Molke mehr austritt, werden die Deckel und Reifen der Bütten festgehämmert, und Salzlösung wird nachgefüllt.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the production of telemea-cheese in an Alpine chalet on a spring Alpine pasture in the Cibin mountains. Rennet is added to the strained milk. The whey is separated from the curdled mass by pressing. The cheese mass, cut into pieces, is put into a salt water solution. After an approximately four hour treatment the pieces of cheese are laid in rows in a wooden vat and each layer is strewn with salt. After about three days the lid is made fast and the vat is filled with salt water up to the brim through an opening in the lid.

The second part shows the lamentations in the morning after the church service.     Kurzfassung: Das "Begraben" der Fahne erfolgt auf demselben Hügel wie das Aufrichten. Die hochgestellte Fahnenstange wird losgelassen, die Männer laufen auseinander. Beim Aufschlag der Stange kehren sie um und begrüßen sich gegenseitig, als hätten sie sich lange nicht mehr gesehen. Der Brauch endet mit dem Tanz der Kaluscharen.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the kalushar group coming from the village and climbing up a hill to conclude the traditional Whitsun rites. The cloth and the herbs are taken down from the "flag", distributed among the kalushars, the flag pole is hoisted up, and at a sign from the mutul it is let go. At that moment the men spring apart and run away in various directions. As soon as the pole hits the ground they turn round and greet each other as though they had not seen each other for a long time. The film ends with the subsequent dancing.

    Kurzfassung: Dicke Fichtenstämme werden im Hof mit Beil und Keilen aufgespalten, in der Stube mit einer Schablone auf verschiedene Schindellänge gemessen und mit der Handsäge gesägt. Auf der Schnitzbank erfolgt dann die Bearbeitung zu Schindeln mit dem Schindelmesser, dem Schlegel und dem Zugmesser. Außer der Arbeitstechnik zeichnet der Film auch die Verhaltensweise des arbeitenden Menschen auf.
    Kurzfassung: Thick pine logs are split in the courtyard with a hatchet and wedges. Inside the house the slips of wood are marked off with the use of a pattern and cutcu with a hand saw to different length. The shaping into shingles is done on the carver's bench by means of the shingle knife, the mallet, and the draw knife. Besides the working technique the film attaches great value to demonstrating the behaviour of the working man.

    Kurzfassung: Flour is made into pastry in a wooden trough by adding leaven, water, and salt. After the loaves are shaped a fire is lit under the baking jar in the open fireplace which heats both the jar and the clay floor and the baking jar turned upside down over it. Baking takes 20 to 30 minutes.

    Kurzfassung: Der Flötenbauer Dumitru Tartareanu spielt auf einer selbstgebauten Kernspaltflöte (s. Film E 1866) mit sechs Grifflöchern und rückseitigem Aufschnitt eine Rubatoweise und zwei Tanzlieder mit dem charakteristischen Gutturalton. Das Rubatospiel wurde auch ohne Gutturalton aufgenommen.
    Kurzfassung: The flute-maker Dumitru Tartareanu plays on a self-made flue pipe (see film E 1866) with six finger holes and dorsal slit. He performs one tune in tempo rubato and two dance tunes with the characteristic guttural sound. A recording was also made of the tune in tempo rubato without the guttural sound.

    Kurzfassung: Ein Achtzigjähriger spielt eine Rubatoweise sowie zwei Tanzmelodien und zeigt so die Spieltechnik seines Instrumentes (einfache Melodiepfeife, Grifflochanordnung 7 und 1). Als Experiment ist die Skala der Melodiepfeife wiedergegeben.
    Kurzfassung: The bagpiper from Alunis (sub-Carpathian hill zone of Greater Walachia) plays an instrument typical of this part of the country - a bagpipe with a simple melody pipe and a 7 + 1 finger hole arrangement. From the rather slender repertory of the eighty year-old our film illustrates a rubato tune (Doina) and two dance melodies, thus showing the playing technique characteristic for the instrument. As an experiment the scale of the melody pipe is reproduced.

    Kurzfassung: Aus gekochten und gepreßten Kartoffeln, Sauerteig, Salz, Kümmel, Roggen- und Weizenmehl sowie Wasser bereitet eine katholische Bäuerin den Brotteig, den sie dreimal bekreuzt. Nach dem Aufgehen des Teiges formt sie vier Brotlaibe, die in Strohkörbe gelegt werden. Das Backen erfolgt im mit Holz beheizten Backofen, der sich außerhalb in einem aus Ziegeln gebauten Backhaus befindet. Vor dem Backen werden in die Laibe mit drei Fingern Zeichen eingedrückt (Gottes Augen).
    Kurzfassung: In the village of Starý Hrozenkov-Cerná in the eastern Moravian area of "Kopanice" bread-baking is still part of the normal work of the peasant roman. Every fortnight she bakes 3-4 loaves of bread in the typical Kopanice baking style. The oven is not in the house, but nearby outside in a bakehouse. It is a catholic family. In the morning, before preparing the leaven, the peasant woman boils the potatoes she needs for the dough and towards evening she prepares the leaven. The next day the dough is finally made ready, four loaves of bread are kneaded into shape and four rolls for the children. In the meantime the oven is heated up; the wood is brought from the shed. Then the loaves are pushed into the oven to bake for two hours and the rolls for 30 minutes. The baked bread is carried back to the house to be wiped and cooled down. Slices are cut from the first loaf immediately it has cooled down. The whole process is done by the peasant woman and the daughters, the peasant man helping only in wiping down the loaves.

    Kurzfassung: Vorgefertigte Dauben aus Kiefernholz werden zurechtgehobelt, mit Reifen aus Hasel zusammengehalten und mit Hilfe von Feuer weich und trocken gemacht. Dann werden die Böden des Heringsfasses hergestellt. Wenn die Böden eingesetzt sind, befestigt der Böttcher die bleibenden Endreifen aus breitem Bandeisen.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the handicraft of herring-keg manufacture. The cooper, bökkeren, m., has ready-cut material of pine-wood for staver, pl. (staves), and botnar, pl. (bottoms), and tönneband, pl. (hoops) of hazel (Corylus avellane) or of willow (Salicaccae). He works the material with special tools, bökkerverkty, pl. (cooper's tools). All stages of the cooper's work are shown, right up to the finished keg.

    Kurzfassung: Aus etwa 25 kg Weizen- (1/4) und Roggenmehl (3/4), Salz, Wasser, Sauerteig und Hefe bereitet eine Bäuerin in der Küche ihres Hauses einen Brotteig (Kreuzzeichen mit drei Querbalken). Dann formt sie Brotlaibe, die in runde Strohkörbe gelegt werden. Das Backen erfolgt in dem in der Küche befindlichen Backofen (Besprengen mit Weihwasser), der mit Tannen- und Fichtenholz beheizt wird. Die Brotlaibe werden in einer Truhe auf dem Dachboden aufbewahrt.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the baking of bread in a farmhouse in Grottendorf, the community of Freistritz, Lower-Austria. Almost all the work connected with the baking including the fetching of wood and heating of the oven is done entirely by the farmer's wife. The work takes two days. With this baking of bread, there are connected religious customs. Most particularly to be mentioned are: in the leaven and in the mixed dough, the farmer's wife draws a cross with three crossbars (similar to that used by the Pope), before putting the bread into the oven she sprinkles holy water around the oven; before cutting the first loaf, she draws three crosses on the underside of the bread with her thumb.

    Kurzfassung: Ein Torfstich wird abgesteckt, Rasenstücke und Erdreich werden abgetragen. Der Torf wird mit dem Torfscheit gestochen, auf Schubkarren gelegt, zur Trocknungsstelle gefahren und abgeladen. Die in Doppelreihen locker aufeinandergelegten Torfstücke müssen nach einigen Wochen umgesetzt werden, bevor man sie in die Torfhütten einlagern kann.
    Kurzfassung: A piece of ground is marked off, grass plots and earth are removed. The peat is cut with the peat spade, put on wheelbarrows, and transported to the drying-place. There the sods are stacked loosely in double rows, transposed a few weeks later, and finally stored in special huts.

    Kurzfassung: The wood processing home industry has lost a great deal of value but in the Bavarian Forest it is still plays a certain part. The film shows how wood strips of two to three-finger width are split off from logs and how the strips are used for making a "Schwinge" (an oval basket). During the course of this work, the craftsman was interrupted only twice so that the settings reflect the natural continuity of the working process.

Dann folgen das Zünden des Meilers, das Regulieren von Wärme und Zug, Prüfen der Qualität des Teers sowie das Füllen der Teerfässer.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the manufacture of tar in Nordmøre, Norway, in 1966 as the last tar pile there was fired. Tar distillation in piles has been tradition in Nordmøre since prehistoric times, and this particular firing proceeded as usual, with no special arrangements for filming. We are shown how the pine-roots, the raw material for the tar, are broken, crushed, and spread out to dry. The film continues with the technicalities of setting up the pile, and shows how the wood is laid in thick, circular layers and covered with peat. The firing of the pile then follows, with regulation of heat and draught by the men to ensure that the pile burns properly to give the best possible tar. The final portion of the film covers quality testing of the tar and filling of the tar-barrels. We see all work at the pile and control of the pile until this is completely burned down and the last of the tar is won from the wood.

Zwischendurch kocht die Bäuerin eine Suppe aus Sauerteig, Rahm, Salz, Pfeffer, gerösteten Zwiebeln, Knoblauch und Wasser.
    Kurzfassung: A peasant woman in Podlesí, in the Moravian district of Zdár n/Sáz., bakes bread in the typical west Moravian way. It is late winter time when baking is done once or twice a month. The oven is in the family's own house. It is a family of protestants. The leaven is prepared during the previous evening. The next day the dough is prepared and nine loaves are kneaded into shape. In between the work done on baking day the oven is warmed up with the wood lying inside from the last baking. Broth is also made from the leaven. Then the peasant woman inserts the loaves into the oven where they are baked for two hours. Each stage of the work takes place in the kitchen. As soon as the baked bread has cooled down it is eaten. Baking work is done by the peasant woman while her husband confines himself to preparing the wood for next baking.
