    Abstract: Auch in Kulturen, in denen Puppen nicht kommerziell hergestellt oder von den Eltern den Kindern angeboten werden, spielen Mädchen gerne mit Puppen. Verschiedene Gegenstände dienen ihnen als Puppenersatz, und oft stellen sie kleine Püppchen selbst her. Der Film stellt Kleinkinder und Mädchen der Himba beim Puppenspiel vor. Die ersten Einstellungen zeigen zwei kleine Mädchen, die eine Sandale als Puppenersatz auf dem Rücken herumtragen. Dann sieht man Mädchen, die Puppen aus Holzstückchen herstellen, sie bekleiden und betreuen. Sie überlassen sie Kleinkindern zum Spielen und helfen dabei, eine Puppe zum Stillen anzulegen.
    Abstract: Even in cultures in which dolls are not commercially manufactured or offered by the children's parents, girls like to play with dolls. Different objects serve as substitutes for dolls, and they often make small dolls themselves. The film presents small Himba children and girls playing with dolls. The first takes show two small girls who are carrying a sandal on their backs as a substitute for a doll. One subsequently sees girls making dolls from pieces of wood; they dress them and care for them. They let small children play with them and help them give the doll their breasts for nursing.

    Abstract: Es handelt sich um eine Freudenmote (sang mote). Männertanz auf dem sakralen Dorfplatz von Dingakon. Die singenden und tanzenden Männer schließen sich in Spiralform mit erhobenen Pfeilen zu einem kompakten Kreis zusammen und kehren danach in die halbkreisförmige Ausgangsstellung zurück.
    Abstract: For the sang mote males posit themselves in a semicircle shoulder by shoulder. A singer who in most cases also leads the dance starts to sing. The others fall in as a chorus. Following this stationary phase the dancers turn for 90°, and forming a row the leader starts to run in a spiral into the interior of the semicircle followed by those behind him while the other side closes around them, so that dancers form a compact group singing and rocking rhythmically up and down on the spot. The dance ends when the group returns to the starting position which opens the next dance. The text of the songs does not necessarily refer to the motive of the dance. Thus the filmed dance expressed gratitude for presents we had given. But the songs referred to the consequences of the recent earthquake, and expressed sorrow about its victims. In another song, a man boasted of carrying away a woman by force, while others criticzed him for that. Whereupon the boaster gave in.

A flag is raised and people are invited to dance and eat. New candles are donated to the church. Young people (Chereques) wearing horrible masks dance in the village to traditional music. Finally fireworks are lit on a figure of a bull, made from corn stems.

    Abstract: Mutter und Vater klagen im Kreis der mittrauernden Gemeinde um ihre kleine Tochter. Die Trauergemeinde befindet sich zunächst in einer Wohnhütte, die Tote ruht auf dem Schoß der Mutter, der Vater sitzt neben ihnen. Im weiteren Verlauf wird das Kind unter dem Wehklagen der Gemeinde und Eltern begraben. Ausdrucksstarke Mimik der Trauer und Verzweiflung.

    Abstract: Der Aufgebahrte wird von vier Männern getragen. Ein fünfter hält die Träger an und stellt Fragen an den Toten, der angeblich seine Begräbnisstätte sucht und wählt. Während Männer das Grab ausheben, trauern Frauen klagend und weinend um den aufgebahrten Toten. Der Tote wird begraben. Ein Holzgerüst schützt seinen Körper vor den über ihn geschichteten Steinen und dem Erdreich. Abzug der Frauen und Männer.
    Abstract: The deceased person on the bier is carried by four men. A fifth man stops the pallbearers and questions the deceased, who allegedly looks for and selects his own place of burial. While the men are digging the grave, women show their grief by wailing and crying about the deceased on his bier. The deceased is buried. A wooden framework protects his body from the layers of stones placed above him and from the soil. Departure of the men and women.

    Abstract: Patamban besitzt drei Marienfiguren, die bei verschiedenen Familien zu Hause in Cargo stehen. An Mariä Lichtmeß (2. Februar) werden in den Gehöften Feste gefeiert, die zu diesem Cargo gehören. Die Marienfiguren werden besonders schön hergerichtet, eine Messe wird gelesen, eine Fahne wird beim Gehöft gehißt, es werden Leute eingeladen, es wird getanzt und gegessen. Das Cargo-Amt der Mariä Empfängnis übernehmen neben dem Carguero auch die vier Kerzenträgerinnen, die zu Mariä Lichtmeß der Kirche neue Kerzen stiften und dies wiederum mit einem kleinen Fest verbinden. Außerdem treten an Mariä Lichtmeß die Chereques auf, junge Leute, die sich mit häßlichen Masken verkleidet haben und im Dorf zu traditioneller Musik tanzen. Mariä Lichtmeß endet mit einem Tanz der Chereques und eines mit Feuerwerkskörpern behängten Maisrohr-Stieres auf der Plaza.

    Abstract: Eintanz der Gäste mit Selbstdarstellung und mit freundlichen Appellen an mittanzende Frauen und Kinder. Die jungen Männer tanzen zunächst einzeln und stellen sich dabei den Familien der Gastgeber singend und tanzend vor. Zuletzt tanzen alle Gäste, Männer, Frauen und Kinder eine Runde. Die Frauen verteilen sich auf die mit ihnen befreundeten Familien, die Männer stellen sich im Zentrum des Shabonos auf. Der Häuptling wirkt an der Verteilung der Gäste auf die verschiedenen Familien der Gastgeber mit. Es folgt die Dokumentation eines im Rahmen dieses Festes am Abend stattgefundenen Kontraktgesanges (Himou) zwischen einem Besucher und dem Häuptling der Patanoetheri. Abgang am nächsten Morgen.
    Abstract: Display dance of the guests with image promotion and with friendly appeals on women and children who are also dancing. The young men first dance alone and in the process present themselves to the host's family in song and dance. Ultimately, all the guests - men, women and children - dance a turn. The women scatter to be with the families who are their friends; the men take positions in the centre of the "Shabonos".     Abstract: "Nadelbindung" ist eine weitverbreitete frühgeschichtlich-mittelalterliche Schlingennähtechnik zur Herstellung von Fäustlingen, Strümpfen, Kappen und ähnlichen Erzeugnissen. Sie ist heute nur noch in Skandinavien bekannt. Aber auch der 90jährige Altbauer A. Meyer, der diese Technik von seinem 1820 geborenen Großvater gelernt hatte, beherrschte sie noch. So entstand ein Film, in dem gezeigt wird, wie ein Handschuh aus Wollgarn in Nadelbindung angefertigt wird.
    Abstract: Looped Needle-netting Technique "Nadelbindung" was an extensively used in the production of mittens, socks caps etc in the early middle ages. Today this technique is only known in scandinavia. The 90 year-old A. Meyer learnt this technique from his grandfather (born 1820) and demonstrates the making of a mitten using woollen yarn and looped needle-netting technique.

    Abstract: Heringszäune sind große, aus Buschholz gebaute Reusenanlagen zum Fang von Heringen, die im Frühjahr zum Laichen flußaufwärts ziehen. In der Schlei, einem 30 km langen, fjordartigen Gewässer, gab es im Mittelalter über 60 Heringszäune. Heute ist nur noch einer bei Kappeln erhalten. Der Film zeigt den Bau dieses Zaunes anstelle eines älteren zerstörten und das Abfischen der Heringe.
    Abstract: Herring weirs are large permeable dams made from young branches to catch herring when they migrate upriver in spring. The Schlei is a 30 km long creek where, in the middle ages, over 60 weirs were placed. The film shows the replacement of a damaged fence in the single remaining weir at Kappeln as well as the method of herring fishing.

    Abstract: In einem monatelangen Arbeitsprozeß fertigen die Former in der Saarburger Glockengießerei Mabilon eine dreiteilige Glockenform aus Lehm, die sie nach einer Schablone modellieren. Die Glockenform besteht aus dem Kern, der "Falschen Glocke" (dem Gußmodell), dem Mantel sowie der Krone.

    Abstract: Die Gewinnung von Torfkohle im Meilerbrand für Schmiedezwecke spielte bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in den großen Moorgebieten an der deutsch-dänischen Grenze bei Bramstedtlund eine erhebliche wirtschaftliche Rolle. Der Altbauer und Amtsschreiber H. C. Davidsen, der 1924 den letzten Meilerbrand durchgeführt hatte, zeigt noch einmal an einem kleinen Meiler, wie die Arbeit vonstatten ging: Gewinnung von Grasplaggen, Anzünden des Feuers, Aufschütten des trockenen Torfs zum Meiler über dem Feuer, Abdecken des in Glut stehenden Meilers mit Grasplaggen und Sand, nach ca. 4 Wochen Öffnen des Meilers und Entnahme der Torfkohle.
    Abstract: The production of charcoal from peat for use in the metal industry played a significant part in the local economy around the peat-bogs on the German-danish border around Bramstedtlund until the end of the 19th century. In 1924 H. C. Davidsen was the last to use this process. Here he demonstrates again the making of grass sods, lighting the fire, placing dried peat on the fire, covering with grass sods and sand to make a kiln and, 4 weeks later, removing the cover and excavating the charcoal.

    Abstract: In dem Überschwemmungsgebiet der Theiß - auf einer Länge von ungefähr 100 Kilometern - in der großen ungarischen Tiefebene lebten in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten mehrere Roma-Gemeinschaften auch davon, daß sie aus den Bäumen des Waldes Holztröge, Werkzeuge, ja sogar Einbäume schnitzten. In dem Gebiet von Poroszló fällen sie Pappeln und stellen aus ihnen Tröge her, in Tiszafüred Holzlöffel. Sie arbeiten mit Zimmermannswerkzeugen. In ihren Arbeiten vermischen sich die Kunstgriffe des Holzhandwerks von professionellen Handwerkern und von Bastlern.
    Abstract: In the flood area of the Theiss - at a length of about 100 kilometres - in the Great Plain of Hungary several Rroma groups, in the past decades, earned their living also by making throughs, tools, even dugouts, from tree trunks. In the region Poroszló they cut down poplars in the forest and hollow out troughs, at Tiszafüred they carve ladles. They use carpenter's tools. Their techniques are a mixture of professional and amateur methods.

    Abstract: Das erste und bedeutendste der alljährlichen Totengedenkfeste im Königreich Oku ist die vom Palast veranstaltete Zeremonie. Im letzten Teil der einwöchigen Veranstaltung treten die wichtigen Militärgesellschaften auf. Zu ihnen gehört Nfuh, deren Tanzauftritt von einer großen Elfenbeintrompete begleitet wird. Anschließend führen sieben Medizinmänner ein öffentliches Medizinritual durch.
    Abstract: The first and most important of the annual feasts in Oku commemorating the deceased is the ceremony organized by the Royal Palace. During the final part of the one-week-ceremonies the influential military societies have their public appearances. One of them is Nfuh. The group dances in front of the spectators accompanied by a huge ivory trumpet. Afterwards seven medicine men publicly carry out a medicine ritual.

The largest part of the feast consists of the dances of the mask societies, among them the powerful Nontang and Mukong from the village of Ngashie. Beim Säubern und Schneiden der Taroscheiben sieht man den Gebrauch des traditionellen Schiefermessers im alltäglichen Kontext. Am Hausbau sind auch die Männer der benachbarten Weiler Imarin und Mumyerunde beteiligt. Die Frauen helfen in den späteren Phasen des Hausbaues durch Herbeitragen von Lehm für die Feuerstelle und Blättern für das Dach. Bei der Bewirtung werden die Männer bevorzugt. Nur sie speisen direkt am Erdofen und nur sie erhalten auch Essensgaben zum Heimnehmen. Den Frauen, die sich im Hintergrund halten, werden gegarte Speisen gereicht.
    Abstract: The film shows the different, in part concurrently occurring, phases of house construction in Weiler Kabcedama as well as the fabrication of an earthen oven, the preparation and cooking of food and finally the provision of those who participated in building the house with food and drink. On cleaning and cutting the taro slices, one sees the use of the traditional slate knife in an every-day context. The men of the neighbouring hamlets Imarin and Mumyerunde also participate in building the house. The women help in the later phases of house building by bringing clay for the hearth and leaves for the roof. The men are favoured in the serving of food and drink. Only they eat directly at the earthen oven and only they also receive gifts of food to take home. The women, who remain in the background, are given previously cooked food.

    Abstract: Bei Malingdam ist eines der beliebtesten Knabenspiele der Eipo aufgenommen, das Graspfeilspiel, bei dem zwei Parteien einander mit etwa bleistiftstarken, bis zu 60 cm langen Grasstengel bekämpfen. Sie schleudern diese Graspfeile mit der Hand nach dem Spielgegner. Das Auftreffen schmerzt. Die Jungen üben bei diesem Spiel kriegerisches Geschick und die kulturtypischen Formen aggressiver Selbstdarstellung. Ihr Mienenspiel verrät hohes emotionelles Engagement.
    Abstract: In Malingdam, one of the most popular boys' games, the grass dart game, of the Eipo has been taken up. In it two parties fight each other with grass stems that are about as thick as a pencil and up to 60 cm long. They throw these grass darts at their opponents. Being hit is painful. These youths practice their martial skills and the types of aggressive self-portrayal typical for their culture. Their expressions reveal a high degree of emotional commitment.

    Abstract: Die 1 1/2jährige Libunagawa als Hauptakteurin in liebevollem Bezug zur Mutter und anderen Kindern verschiedenen Geschlechts. Der Film belegt die Kontaktinitiative des kleinen Mädchens und die Freundlichkeit der sozialen Umwelt, welche das Kind aktiv erkundet. Auch beim spielerischen Abschaben von Bananenblattstreifen nimmt es mit seiner sozialen Umwelt Kontakt auf. Die Mutter bleibt die bevorzugte Bezugsperson und sichere Basis, von der aus das Kind exploriert. Ein kurzer Objektkonflikt zeigt, daß Libunagawa sich durchaus auch aggressiv behauptet. Stillakte und zärtliche Interaktionen mit der Mutter unterbrechen die Interaktionen mit anderen.
    Abstract: The 1 1/2-year old Libunagawa as the main character in affectionate regard to her mother and other children of different genders. The film documents the contact initiative of the small girl and the friendliness of her social environment, which the child actively explores. Even when playfully scraping off banana leaf strips, she maintains contact with her social environment. The mother remains the preferred significant other and the safe base from which the child explores. A short object conflict shows that Libunagawa can clearly hold her own in an aggressive situation. Nursing acts and affectionate interaction with her mother interrupt interactions with other people.

Aufforderung zum Spiel, Spielgesicht, spielerische Nachahmung. Die Ambivalenz ihrer Beziehung kommt auch in der Verweigerung einer Bitte zum Ausdruck. Das Mädchen Yoto ißt. Metik bittet durch ihr Verhalten, abzugeben, bekommt aber nichts. Yoto zeigt ihr herausfordernd den Bissen, gibt aber nicht ab. Bemerkenswert ist, daß Metik diese Entscheidung respektiert. Sie schmollt allerdings.
    Abstract: The film shows the relationship of two 3-year-old girls, the strategy of their morning contact establishment, which exhibits a clear ambivalence (attraction and timidity). Erst nachdem er die Milch gekostet hat, ist sie für den Verbrauch freigegeben. Es handelt sich um ein Ritual der Gehorsamkeit.
    Abstract: In the Himba tribe, who live as herdsmen warriors in the Kaokoland of South West Africa, the individuals of a Kraal community bring their chieftain the fresh milk to taste every morning. Only after he has tasted it is it released for consumption. This is s rite of obedience.

Man sieht wiederholt Teilen und Objektkonflikte, die unter anderem in explorativer Aggression provoziert werden. Bemerkenswert sind die ausdrucksstarken Appelle der Mimik und Gestik, des Herausforderns und Beschwichtigens.
    Abstract: The film documents the social competence of an approximately 3 1/2-year-old girl in different social interactions of friendly and agonal types, above all in combination with an approximately 4-year-old girl. One sees repeated sharing and object conflicts, which are, among other things, provoked in explorative aggression.     Abstract: Die etwa 4 Jahre Koumbware betreut die 16-18 Monate alte Onguaundjondjose. Sie betätigt sich als Babysitter und tröstet die Kleine geduldig mit großem Engagement. Das Repertoire der Verhaltensweisen des Tröstens ist ausführlich dokumentiert. Später wird ihr ein wenige Monate alter männlicher Säugling kurz zum Liebkosen überreicht. Zuletzt spielt Koumbware mit einer Sandale, die sie wie ein Baby auf ihrem Schoß hält, betätschelt, aber auch kurz bestraft.
    Abstract: Koumbware, who is about 4 years old, cares for the 16-to-18 month-old Onguaundjondjose. She acts as baby-sitter and consoles the little one patiently with great dedication. Her repertoire on consoling behaviour patterns is comprehensively documented. Later a male baby that is only a few months old is given to her for cuddling. Finally, Koumbware plays with a sandal, which she holds on her lap like a baby, caresses it, but also briefly punishes it.

Die Mutter von Onguaundjondjose unterbindet das. Koumbware folgt und trägt die eingetragenen Holzstücke wieder hinaus. Onguaundjondjose dagegen trägt unermüdlich hinein, was Koumbware geduldig herausschafft. Daraus entwickelt sich ein Zusammenspiel.
    Abstract: After a brief object conflict with exchange of blows, Koumbware, who is approximately 4 years old, and Onguaundjondjose, who is about 18 months old, begin to carry firewood into the hut. Onguaundjondjose's mother stops this. Koumbware follows him and carries the pieces of wood which have been carried into the hut back out. Onguaundjondjose however tirelessly carries the wood that Koumbware patiently carries out back into the hut. This develops into a kind of game.

Später spielen die beiden allein, wobei auf Distanz aggressive und/oder kämpferische Handlungen mimisch dargestellt werden; besonders tut dies der Junge. (Spiegelaufnahmen)
    Abstract: A little two-year-old boy and his approximately five-year-old sister are playing in front of their hut under the eyes of their mother. During the children's interactions many instances of rivalry and aggressive quarrels about the object with which they are playing can be observed. The little boy acts without any restraint, whereas his elder sister controls her aggressive intentions. There are only a few instances where the mother interferes. Later, both siblings are playing alone. Now we observe their mimic expression of menacing and fighting activities directed towards an imaginery person in "empty space", so to speak.

    Abstract: Das erste und bedeutendste der alljährlichen Totengedenkfeste im Königreich Oku ist die vom Palast veranstaltete Zeremonie. Im ersten Teil des Festes, der von der Geheimgesellschaft Kwifon bestritten wird, tritt die Maskengruppe Felingang auf. Nachdem sich die Tänzer in dem nur Eingeweihten zugänglichen Palastbereich angekleidet haben und sie gesegnet worden sind, haben sie, begleitet von einem Xylophon und anderen Instrumenten, vor dem Palast ihren öffentlichen Tanzauftritt.

The first part of the ceremony is held by the secret society Kwifon. Its mask group Felingang dances in public. After dressing in the restricted part of the palace and after blessings, the dancers appear in front of the spectators.

    Abstract: Das erste und bedeutendste der alljährlichen Totengedenkfeste im Königreich Oku ist die vom Palast veranstaltete Zeremonie. Das Fest beginnt mit dem Teil, den die Geheimgesellschaft Kwifon bestreitet. Zunächst veranstaltet Kwifon in ihrem Gehöft eine geheime Zeremonie, die "Musik von Kwifon". Dabei werden die geheimen Musikinstrumente gespielt und Mabuh, die Läufermaske von Kwifon, tritt auf.

It starts with the activities of the secret society Kwifon. In the society's compound on the palace premises Kwifon holds a secret ceremony called "the music of Kwifon". Several secret musical instruments are played and one of Kwifon's masks, Mabuh, appears in the compound.

    Abstract: Vor dem Guß wird in der Saarburger Glockengießerei Mabilon die Glockenform auseinandergenommen. Die Former zerschlagen die "Falsche Glocke", setzen die Form in der Gießgrube zusammen und stampfen sie in die Erde ein. Durch aus Backstein ausgemauerte Kanäle fließt beim festlich begangenen Guß das Metall in die Form. Nach dem Guß werden die Glocken ausgegraben, geputzt und durch einen Sachverständigen auf ihre Klangreinheit geprüft.
    Abstract: The bell form is disassembled and the "false bell" removed. The form is placed in a trench and covered with earth. The molten metal is poured in via a brick canal. Afterwards the metal is removed, cleaned and tested for clarity of tone.

In the film they are celebrated by the Archbishop of Mossul Gregorius Saliba.

    Abstract: The manufacture of pottery is one of the traditional crafts practised in Lebanon. The film shows the making of a jug of simple shape by the potter Karim Muhammed Karim. The work is carried out in different stages: fetching the clay from a clay pit, modeling the jug, shaping the handle, the spout and the lid.

    Abstract: Zwei Männer fertigen ein weiblich-männliches Maskenpaar an: Rindenbaststoffgewinnung, Zuschneiden und Nähen, Farbstoffgewinnung. Bemalen von Oberkörper und Gesichtspartie der Maskenkleider, Ansetzen von Bastrock und Ärmeln, Anprobieren.
    Abstract: The northwest Amazon river area is one of the principal centres of masks in South America. The masks of the Cubeo, made from bark cloth and of high artistic quality, are used in feasts for the dead and then destroyed. The film shows two men making a couple (male-female) of masks. The work proceeds in different stages: making the bark cloth, cutting and sewing, extracting the dye, painting, attaching the skirt of bark fibres and the sleeves. Finally, the film presents the couple of masks with the attendant dancing-sticks. The two masks symbolize parrot demons.

    Abstract: Ein Hundegespann zieht einen Schlitten über durch Ebbe freigelegte Schlickflächen und durch Wasserrinnen zu den im Watt stehenden Reusen. Je nach Bodenbeschaffenheit steht der Krabbenfischer hinten auf dem Schlitten, schiebt eventuell mit einem Fuß an oder geht daneben her. An der Fangstelle entleert er die Reusen und schüttet den Fang auf einen Holzrost; durch Rütteln des Rostes sortiert er die großen Krabben aus. Etwa 90% des Fangs wird zurückgelassen.
    Abstract: A sledge is drawn on tidal mudflats by a team of dogs. At the place where he has set fish-traps the fisherman stops the sledge and empties the fish-traps. He pours the caught shrimps on a trellis and sorts out the big ones by vibrating the trellis. Nearly nine tenths of the catch are left in the tidal gutter and in the mud.

    Abstract: From the plane an escarpment wooded with frankincense trees and after that the settlement of Hasik at Khuriya Muriya Bay can be seen. A woman frankincense collector is demonstrating all the different phases of gum collection while collecting gum from frankincense tree. She is using a special scraper and a collecting basket. The special technique used in scraping, the different gum qualities, and the way the gum is stored are presented.

Etwa 50 einheimische Männer und Jungen sowie Gäste aus anderen Dörfern nehmen an dem Bau des Rundhauses mit Kegeldach teil. Die Arbeit wird von zeremoniellen Handlungen begleitet.
    Abstract: Building materials, poles and planks, are partly of sacral character. They are set up at a rhythmical run, producing a state of ecstasy. Food is distributed to the workers. The new house is covered with the old roof. Finally, the sacred digging-stick is placed in the new men's house. Small spirit houses are also constructed.

    Abstract: The northwest Amazon river area is one of the principal centres of masks in South America. Among the Makuna masked festivals are held at the harvest of particular crops and play a large ritual role. The film shows the different stages of making a mask: making the reddish-brown bark cloth and twisting the threads, sewing on a hoop of liana as frame for the face, modelling the face of resin, and affixing balsa sticks serving as eyes and nose. Geomtric designs are then made on the face in white and yellow, a tuft of hair made of bark fibres is attached, and the completed mask is tried on. The mask symbolizes a fish demon.

    Abstract: 17 figures of the Polar Eskimo string-game repertoire are demonstrated. Animals, bodyparts or utensils of daily use are imitated by string configurations. All figures can be performed by a single person. Some patterns present the object in a stable state, others also show its movements. Playing string-games is still a very popular pastime pleasure among the Polar Eskimos.

    Abstract: Eine Frau flicht aus Palmblättern eine Melkschale in Spiralwulsttechnik, bespannt zwei Drittel der Außenwand zur Abdichtung mit Ziegenhaut, verziert den Rand mit eingeflochtenen Wollfäden und Indigo-Mustern. Abschließend Gebrauch der Schale beim Melken.
    Abstract: In a wadi a young beduin is cutting palm-branches from an 'azaf bush. The palm-leaves are slit after having been dried in the sun and than soaked in water or milk. For this and the piercing of holes the woman bowl-maker is using a nail. The hard strips of the leaves are used for the making of rolled strands and the soft strips for binding them together. The lower part of the outside of the milking bowl is sealed with a cover of soft kid. Finally the outer rim of the vessel is partly ornamented with patterns in indigo. At the end of the film a man demonstrates the practical use of a milking bowl when milking a cow. At the same time the use of a dummy-calf can be observed as well.

An important product is a basket, used for gathering and for batering. The film shows a Makú woman making a bell-shaped gathering basket. The materials used are two different kinds of lianas, made slender over the fire and then worked into a basket by the twining technique.

Ein Mann reibt Sago auf die Haut des Schweines und schlägt mit einer Palmblattrippe auf den Erdboden. Das Schwein wird an einem Stock festgebunden und in das Dorf getragen.
    Abstract: Four men bring a killed domestic pig to the hamlet Alembe. The woman who cared for the pig sits on the dead animal and mourns. Her husband's brother rubs sago on the skin of the pig and beats with the rib of a palm leaf on the ground. The pig is tied to a stick and is carried to the village where a mortuary ceremony is celebrated for four deceased people.

    Abstract: Aus den Blattfiedern der Sagopalme gewinnt eine Frau Fasern für ihren Schurz. Sie färbt sie mit zerschlagener Ingwerwurzel gelb, durch Kochen mit den Blättern des Awui-Baumes rot und durch Eingraben in Schlamm schwarz. Für den rückwärtigen Teil des Schurzes werden einige gelb gefärbte Faserstränge durch Abbinden mit Baumbast reserviert und rot sowie nach nochmaligem Abbinden schwarz gefärbt. Weiße Fasern gewinnt sie aus der Rinde eines Sumpfstrauches.
    Abstract: The woman Namburagua makes the major part of the required fibres from the young sprout of a sago-palm. She dyes the fibres yellow with smashed ginger root, red by boiling them with the leaves of the awui tree, and black by using mud. Several yellow dyed fibres, reserved for the back of the skirt, are bound with bark fibre and dyed red, then, after a further bounding, dyed black. Another, white-coloured fibre is obtained by Namburagua from the bark of a marsh-plant, which has been soaked in water for one week to loosen the inner bark.

    Abstract: The film shows the making of a lampshade from reed and glass beads. In front of a workshop at Halat Muhsen ar-Ruhban, a craftsman from Zgarta, first plaits the part of the lampshade made of reed. He then threads the glass beads on the reeds and forms the whole into the desired shape of a lampshade. Finally, he plaits a handle for suspending the lampshade.

    Abstract: The film shows Polar Eskimos, fishing salmons through ice-holes on a frozen lake in the Thule-District. For fishing they use two different techniques: The first includes the use of a particular harpoon which is especially designed for that purpose. The fish is attracted by a bait, which was dropped down instead of fish-hook at a fishing rod. As soon as a fish appears, becoming visible through the hole, the Eskimo pushes down the harpoon to pierce the prey. The other method is comparable to the fishing with a spoon bait, which is known as modern fishing technique too.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus Meno baut einen kleinen Zeremonialtopf (Aumar) in Spiralwulsttechnik auf. Das Gefäß wird ohne Werkzeug von Hand ausgeformt. Nach einer kurzen Trocknungsphase an der prallen Sonne verziert der Töpfer die ganze Außenfläche in Kerbschnittechnik. Zum Schluß wird der Topf zusammen mit weiteren Tongefäßen im offenen Feuer gebrannt.
    Abstract: Using the technique of coiling with foundation, a man constructs a small ceremonial vessel (aumar). The vessel is modelled by hand, without the use of tools. After the vessel has been dried briefly in the sun, the potter decorates its whole outer surface, employing the chip carving technique. Finally, this and other clay vessels are fired in the open fire.

    Abstract: In Meno fertigt eine Frau aus Rindenbastfasern des Gnetum-gnemon-Strauches durch Drillen und Zwirnen das Ausgangsmaterial, einen schnurartiger Faden, an und stellt dann daraus durch knotenfreies Verschlingen in der Technik der sanduhrförmigen Masche die Tragtasche selbst her. Die Schauseite der Tasche wird bei der Herstellung mit einem schachbrettartigen und zugleich bandförmigen farbigen (Beige, Blau, Rot) Ornament verziert.
    Abstract: Nggai'uk, a widow from the village of Meno, shows how bark fibres of the Gnetum gnemon bush are twisted into the cord-like thread used to procedure carrying bags. Then, using the knotless netting technique with hourglass-shaped loops, she manufactures the bag itself. The looping is interrupted repeatedly, whenever a new supply of thread is needed. The outside of the bag is decorated in the course of manufacture. For this reason Nggai'uk works with seven parallel threads; three of them are left the basic colour, beige, twi are dyed blue and two red for the length of the pattern. An ornament at the same time chequered and bank-like is produced by the stepped course of the seven rows of loops. When the netting is finished, the bag is filled with stones so that the threads are stretched uniformly. Finally firewood is fetched, and the carrying function of the bag is demonstrated.

    Abstract: Aus verschieden gefärbten Sagopalmblattfasern und weißen Bastfasern eines Strauches stellt eine Frau einen Schurz her, indem sie die Fasern auf eine Hüftschnur knüpft. Sie legt den fertigen Schurz an, eine Freundin schneidet ihn auf die gewünschte Länge und nimmt die vom Färbeprozeß noch verbliebenen Bastreservierungen ab.
    Abstract: Namburagua makes a women's skirt from differently dyed fibres of sago-palm leaves and white fibres of a marsh-plant. She ties the fibres to a waistband, then she puts on the skirt. A friend cuts the skirt to the desired length and removes the bark fibres left from the dyeing-process.

    Abstract: In einem verschneiten Wald werden Holztransportschlitten von Hunden bergauf gezogen und dort mit Meterscheiten quer zur Fahrtrichtung beladen. Bei der Talfahrt laufen die Hunde frei hinter den von Holzarbeitern gelenkten Schlitten her. Auf ebener Strecke ziehen Mann und Hund gemeinsam.
    Abstract: In a snowed-up forest of the Mühlviertel sledges for the transport of wood are being pulled uphill by dogs. Having arrived at the working place, the sledges are loaded with timber. On their way back at the steep slopes the dogs are running at large behind the quickly gliding sledges, driven by the woodworkes. On an even path the sledge is drawn by both, man and dog.

    Abstract: In St. Nikolaus (Ulten, South Tyrol) a travelling craftsman makes from oxhide a plaited cord. The film shows the entire work-process, beginning with the cutting of the hide, the removing of the hair, and the plaiting itself to the greasing and racking of the finished product. Leather cords of this kind were used to bind hay, logs of wood, and other materials during transport.

    Abstract: The clay is pounded, sifted, watered, and kneaded. The modelling of the bottom of the jug is done from a lump of clay. The upper part of the jug is formed by fitted-on clay-rims. Below the rim of the jug the woman potter is carving a circular decoration. After drying the jug is baked in an open fire. The material used for burning is dried wood.
