    Abstract: Eine Schaffarm im Glen Esk im östlichen Hochland. In der Lammzeit (April/Mai) werden die Herden vom Schäfer besonders intensiv betreut. Er muß Geburtshilfe leisten, den Ernährungszustand der Lämmer überprüfen, verwaiste und verlassene Lämmer anderen Muttertieren unterschieben und unterkühlte Neugeborene im Haus wärmen und künstlich ernähren.
    Abstract: During the ewing-period the shepherd has to take especially care of the flocks. He has to assist the ewes in ewing, to control the feeding of the lambs, and to switch orphaned and abandoned lambs to ewes that have lost their lamb. This is still done by the traditional method of skinning: The dead lamb's skin is slipped on the abandoned lamb to deceive the mother ewe. At this time the shepherd must also warm newly-born, supercooled lambs inside the house and feed them artificially.

    Abstract: Eine Schaffarm im Glen Esk im östlichen Hochland. Vor der Schur (Juli) werden die diesjährigen Lämmer von den Alttieren getrennt und einem Desinfektionstauchbad gegen Parasiten unterworfen. Die Alttiere werden mit elektrischen Scherapparaten, einige auch mit Handscheren geschoren. Die Vliese werden zusammengerollt und verpackt. Bei der herbstlichen Auktion in Edzell werden überzählige Tiere versteigert.
    Abstract: Before shearing, done with electric devices and hand shears, the lambs are separated from the flock. The lambs are not yet shorn but dipped in a disinfectant, parasiticidal liquid prescribed by law. For the auction, held in autumn, the sheep for sale are loaded on special trucks and transported from the pasture to the public sale.

    Abstract: Ausschnitt aus einem mehrtägigen Besuchsfest in Munggona (s. Film E 2803). In der Nacht, bevor die Gäste eintreffen, tanzen Männer in Kreisformation und singen dazu. Der Vortänzer löst den Kreis auf, indem er die Tänzer in einer Spiralform in der Mitte zusammenführt. Anschließend führt der letzte Tänzer die Tanzschlange in die Kreisformation zurück. Einige Frauen tanzen am Rande des Dorfplatzes in Reihenformation.
    Abstract: Excerpt from a visiting feast, which lasted several days, in Munggona (see Film E 2803). In the night before the guests arrive, men dance in a circular formation and sing in accompaniment. The leading dancer breaks up the circle by bringing the dancers together in the centre in a spiral shape. Subsequently, the last dancer guides the dance line back into the circular formation. Several women dance at the margin of the village plaza in a row formation.

    Abstract: The film gives a general survey of the culture of the Saharan Kanuri inhabiting the oasis of Fachi. It is conceived as an approach to a type of culture determined by the extreme ecological conditions of the Sahara. Presenting a typical Kanuri family, the film shows chiefly the economic system, the trading with caravans of nomadic Tuareg as well as scenes from the social and religious life of the inhabitans of Fachi.

Die Faserstränge werden von links nach rechts in sich gedreht und miteinander verflochten. Später setzt er seine Arbeit stehend fort.
    Abstract: In front of the entrance to his house in Mailal, a man named Deklob is sitting and twisting a rope out of bark bast fibres. The rope is tightly tied to the house wall. The fibre strands are each twisted from the left to the right and interwoven with one another. Later, he continues his work while standing.

    Abstract: Männer und Jungen aus Mailal bauen zwei etwa 12-15 bzw. 15-18 m lange Holzbrücken über den Malingkele-Fluß, die ihr Dorf mit Imde verbinden werden. Zuerst werden die Brückenköpfe errichtet, dann die Baumstämme aufgelegt und mit Fasermaterial miteinander verbunden. Danach werden die Laufstege aufgebunden sowie die Geländer aus langen, biegsamen Stangen hergestellt. Während der Gemeinschaftsarbeit wird auch ein Erdofen errichtet.
    Abstract: Men and boys from Mailal build two approximately 12-15- and 15-18-m-long wooden bridges over the Malingkele River. These bridges will connect their village with Imde. To begin with the bridge heads are erected; then the tree trunks are put on and tied together with fibrous material. Subsequently, the catwalks tied on and the railings, which are made of long, flexible poles, are made. During this co-operative effort, a earthen oven is erected.

    Abstract: In Abwesenheit der Männer tragen Frauen ein verendetes Schwein zum Schlachteplatz, zerlegen es mit einem Bambusmesser, sengen die Borsten an, stellen Würste her. Ein zweites Schwein wird gebracht und verarbeitet. Fleisch und Würste werden zusammen mit Gemüse in zwei Erdöfen gegart. Ab und zu erscheinen Männer, die sich wegen Tabuvorschriften im Walde aufhalten, um Ratschläge zu erteilen. Die Frauen beklagen den Verlust der Schweine und singen Klagelieder.
    Abstract: In the absence of men, women carry a dead pig to the cutting place, dissecte it using a bamboo knife, singe the bristles and make sausages. A second pig is brought and processed. Together with vegetable, meat and sausages are cooked in two earth ovens. Men, required to stay in the wood by taboo rules, appear off and on to give advice. The women lament and bewail the death of the pigs.

    Abstract: Zwei große, neugebaute Kanus sollen in einem Singfest geweiht werden. Tags zuvor werden die Memorierstäbe für die Liederreihen vorbereitet: aufgesteckte Figuren werden fertiggeschnitzt und bemalt. Die geschmückten Kanus werden auf das Ufer und zum Männerhaus gezogen. Bei dem Fest wechseln auf einer Schlitztrommel geschlagene kultische Rhythmen mit Gesängen. Am Memorierstab wird der Fortgang der Liederreihe deutlich. Wegen eines Großfeuers, bei dem mehrere Wohnhäuser abbrennen, wird das Fest vorzeitig abgebrochen.
    Abstract: The day before the feast sticks for memorizing the name songs are prepared. The decorated canoes are pulled to the shore and up into the men's house. At the feast name songs are presented which relate to the respective clan mythology. A big fire of several houses puts an end to the feast.

    Abstract: How closely linked the various domains of a planting culture are in daily life is demonstrated by means of examples from the activities of a leading Kwoma, Yessomari, who comes from the village of Meno-Saserman in the Washkuk Hills (Ambunti District, East Sepik Province). The film largely follows the planting cycle, from clearing the land (work done co-opertively by the planter, other men from his close cricle of friends and relations, and women) and burning the stubble through the digging of planting holes (done co-operatively by a large group of men), planting the yams, tying up and tending the creepers (the planter's three specific activities) to harvesting the crop. In between, glimpses are given of other sectors of male responsibility, like carving a decorated beam for a men's house, preparing a pandanus soup, extracting sago starch, making and decorating a piece of ceremonial pottery and painting a chip-carved shield. The film closes with a look at a harvest festival, which women with shields made of decorated net bags also take part in, dancing in front of the men's house.
