    Abstract: Erdweihung nach lamaistischem Ritus durch Mönche der Gelugpa-Sekte: Auf einer Plattform wird ein Koordinatennetz ausgemessen und aufgezeichnet. In dieses malt man eine Götterfigur. Ein kleines Rechteck wird am Boden ausgemessen und etwas Erde daraus entnommen. Diese wird auf dem ganzen Umkreis des späteren Gebäudes verstreut. Am Schluß werden in einer Grube neben der Plattform Urnen als Weihgeschenke versenkt.
    Abstract: Ceremony of consecration of the ground according to Lamaistic rites by monks of the Gelugpa sect: A coordinate system is measured and drawn out on a platform. Inside this the figur of a god is then drawn. A small rectangle is measured out on the ground and earth removed from it. This is scattered over the whole circumference of the future building. Finally, a sacrifice of urns containing oblation is buried in a pit next to the platform.

    Abstract: A block of wood about 30 cm long is cut with an axe out of a tree trunk. Measurements with compasses are taken at the upper cutting surface. The block is then hollowed out with a gouge, and its outer surface and handle are fashioned with a cutting knife.

    Abstract: A piece of wood is chopped from a tree-stump with an axe and cut with the cutting knife to a cross-bow shaft. The position of the bow is chiselled out. The bamboo bow is whittled, tried several times in the shaft, and then wedged firmly in position. After notch, groove, and trigger have been positioned on the shaft, the bow is strung with twisted hemp fibres. After the elasticity test, arrows are whittled and trial shots carried out.

    Abstract: Ein junger Mann fällt im Wald einen Upasbaum und bringt ihn ins Dorf, entrindet und schneidet ihn zurecht. Er klopft die Bastschicht mit Hilfe zweier Holzschlegel als Schlauch von dem 1,7 m langen (11 cm Durchmesser) Stamm, dehnt sie und hängt sie zum Trocknen zwischen zwei Pfosten auf. Am folgenden Tag schneidet er den Baststoff auf. Die Matte ist 1,5 x 0,6 m groß.
    Abstract: A tree is felled with hewing-knife, a block of about 6 ft. is cut off the trunk and taken to the village. The outer layer of the bark is separated by scratching, the bast layer beaten with a wooden hammer and rolled up to form a torus. After the beating the roll is unrolled into a tubular shape and hung to dry on a pole. On the following day the tubular piece of bast is taken down and cut open.

    Abstract: On placing the first wooden pillars for a house a sacrifice is made to the house-spirit. When all supporting pillars are erected, the bamboo beams and joists are attached. A bamboo framework is then made for the sleeping-place. Subsequently the two ridge pillars are erected and the ridge pole laid across. The rafters and the purlins are fixed on to the rood framework which is then covered with grass mats. The ridge consists of two beams between which sharpened bamboo stakes are pierced in order to fix the grass mats on to the ridge. The ridge is adorned with turrets fixed on top of the smoke-openings. The door is set in after the walls, made of plaited bamboos, are set in.

Dann stellt er eine Peitsche her, deren Schnur er um den Kreisel wickelt. Dieser wird durch Wegwerfen und Ziehen an der Peitsche in Drehung versetzt.
    Abstract: A wooden block of about 15 cm length and about 8 cm in diameter is, with a chopping knife, worked up into a conic whipping top. For strengthening a nail of hard wood is put into its peak. Then a whip is made out of wooden stick and a twisted cord of fibre. With this whip, the whipping top is set rotating.

    Abstract: A smith prepares a silver plate by hammering, cutting, and filing. He then decorates the front by punching a geomtrical decoration. He thereupon bores a hole in each of the two upper corners and, adding a silver chain and a silver neck-ring, produces a pendant.

Die Arbeiten werden von Mädchen aus Doi Muse ausgeführt.

In den Händen tragen sie ihre Holzkreisel mit den Peitschen, deren Schnüre um den oberen zylinderförmigen Teil der Kreisel gewickelt sind. Sie werfen damit nach bereits "stehenden" Kreiseln, um diese zu Fall zu bringen oder fortzuschleudern.

    Abstract: Two cotton threads are strung on a bamboo bow, the lower part of a small chicken feather the quill of which has been cut off is stuck between the two threads. The feather is wound around both threads and the top of the feather is again stuck between the two threads. The feather which has thus been fixed to the threads is pushed aside with a needle. The finished cord is dyed red and gets a multicoloured tassel of cotton threads attached to one end.

Mit selbst hergestelltem Lötwerkstoff formt, lötet und verziert er Schmuckteile: Gürtelschnalle, Kugelornament, Gliederkette, Glöckchen und Steinfassung.
    Abstract: A silversmith smelts silver and casts it into small bars, which he draws into wire or hammers into sheets. He ornaments individual decorative pieces by turning or chasing. With welding material which he procedures himself, he moulds, solders and decorates jewellery; belt-buckle, spherical ornament, link-chain, small bell and stone-setting.

    Abstract: An endless warp is wound around six thread-beams which are stuck in the ground; the lease is formed, the heddle set in, and a separating roll is slung into the warp. The finished warp is strung between a warp-beam and a breast-beam which is fixed to the body of the weaver. A sword is used when weaving to tighten the weft and to increase the shed which is formed by the rising and falling of the heddle.

The thickened milky juice which while thickening changed its colour to blackish-brown is collected with a scraper from the heads which were cut the day before. It is then wrapped up in a flower petal.

Der Korbdeckel wird in Diagonalgeflecht hergestellt.

Dann dreht er ihn auf einer Eisenwinde zu einer Spirale und schlägt diese mit einem Meißel zu kleinen Silberringen auf, die er zu einer Kette zusammenfügt.
    Abstract: A smith pours silver from a clay crucible; he then hammers out the resulting ingot into a thin rod which he draws into wire by means of a wire-drawing plate. He then gives it a spiral form by turning it on an iron windlass. This spiral is divided by means of a chisel into small silver rings which are linked together to form a chain.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus Huye Luang stellt aus zwei Bambusröhren mit Hilfe eines Haumessers eine etwa 57 cm hohe Wasserpfeife her. Die Fugen dichtet er mit Rindertalg ab. In das dickere Saugrohr füllt er Wasser; er stopft Tabak in den Pfeifenkopf und raucht die Pfeife.
    Abstract: The upper joint of a bamboo cane of about 60 cm, with two joints, is pierced with a rod of wood. In the lower third of the cane a hole is incised with a bush knife into which hole a thin bamboo rod is diagonally introduced. The joint is sealed with tallow. The thin bamboo rod was cut off immediately to one side of a joint, thus producing a funnel-shaped form like the bowl of a pipe. Water is now poured into the thicker cane, tobacco is filled into the bowl, and the pipe is smoked.

    Abstract: Cotton is put into the machine between two rollers which revolve in opposite directions. The cotton fibres are transported through these rollers and are thus separated from the seeds which had remained on them. The upper, thinner iron roller is operated with the feet by means of a connecting rod the lower wooden roller is set in motion by means of a crank handle.

    Abstract: During the new year festivities the ceremonial ball game of the young men and the maidens is played in the village square. The partners form two lines facing each other, throw rag-balls from one line to the other, and accompany the game with recitations and songs. Nearby, the younger boys play the badmintom game, in the course of which feathered missiles of bamboo are batted to and fro with wooden raquets. In a different part of the village several boys are playing the "top-spinning game". During these games, the new year is heralded by a man shooting a flint-look musket.

The game between two Miao youths then begins; they bat the "shuttle-cock" to each other with wooden racquets, the object being to keep it in mid-air.

Die Kette wird im Webstuhlrahmen am Warenbaum befestigt und an einem Pflock festgebunden, der als Kettbaum dient. Die Schäfte werden mit den Tritten verbunden, und nach dem Ordnen der Kette wird mit dem Weben begonnen. Die Mutter hilft bei der Arbeit.
    Abstract: The end loops of the lease in the fixed warp are cut, and the crossed warp-threads alternately threaded into the heddles of the front and back shafts. Then the warp threads are threaded into the reed by means of a procupine quill. The warp is fixed on to the frame of the loom and bound firmly to a peg which is stuck behind the loom and serves as warp-beam. The shafts are connected with the pedals, the weaving process starts after arranging the warp.

Five short wooden pins are driven into the ground, and around these the warp threads are wound. The warp is then threaded through the reed. The loops for the heddle rod are made with threads of their own. The finished warp is wound on the warp beam and carried to the loom.

Dann trägt sie das Negativmuster in Wachs mit Batikfeder auf und färbt den Stoff in Indigo blau. Nach Auskochen des Wachses legt sie das Tuch auf die Trockenstange.

    Abstract: Ein Mädchen aus dem Dorf Ban Alm bereitet das Garn zum Schären vor: Aufwickeln, Strangbildung, Schlichten mit Reismehlwasser, Trocknen. Nach dem Abwickeln des Garnes mit einer Kreuzhaspel werden sechs Schärpflöcke in die Erde geschlagen, und die Kette wird von zwei Frauen geschärt.
    Abstract: Thread from a wholly spun spindle is wound into a ball. The thread from the ball runs through a hollow bamboo stick which is held in the hand; then it is wound into a skein with the help of a double-T-shaped handreel. The skein is taken off the reel, starched in a solution of rice flour, and then strung between two poles to dry. When the skein is dry it is put on a reel and the thread is unwound into a basket. Six thread-beams are knocked into the ground and two women fix the warp.

    Abstract: The potter lays a coil of clay as thick as an arm on a piece of sackcloth, spreads it and gives it a rectangular shape. He presses the clay to the sides and pulls it up in order to form the side walls, he then puts a cylindrical smooth piece of wood in the hollow which he has thus formed and causes the sides to overlap. He smooths the juncture and takes the piece of wood out.

    Abstract: Der Schmied aus Tarim legt eine Schablone auf ein Blechstück, ritzt den Trichterumriß ein und schneidet ihn aus. Er wird zusammengebogen und gefalzt. Dann werden die Stücke für Abflußrohr, Henkel und oberen Rand ausgeschnitten; Rohr und Rand werden gefalzt. Die Falznähte der Einzelteile werden verlötet und der Trichter wird zusammengesetzt, wobei das obere Rohrende mit einem feinen Drahtsieb versehen wird. Schließlich werden Rohr, Trichter, Rand und Henkel aneinandergelötet.
    Abstract: A tin-can is cut into pieces, which are smoothed. The smith lays a pattern on a piece of tin, scratches the outline of the funnel and cuts it out. It is then bent over and welted. After this the pieces for the pipe, the handle and the upper edge are cut out. Pipe and rim are welted. The weltings are soldered and put together, a fine sifting-web is placed on the top end of the pipe. Finally the pipe, funnel, rim and handle are soldered together.

Dann wird die Zündschnur eingelegt und in Brand gesteckt.
    Abstract: A hollow is chiselled into a block of limestone. The stonemason fills gunpowder, which has been previously mixed with water, into the hollow, and rams it down with a round iron bar. With regular movements he turns a pointed iron in the hollow in order to make a hole for the quick match. The hollow is sealed with clay, the quick match inserted and lit.

    Abstract: Aus einem Tonklumpen wird das Material vorerst quaderförmig grob geformt; die Seitenflächen werden auf einem als Unterlage dienenden Gefäß konkav geformt. Auf einer als Unterlage dienenden Tonscheibe erfolgt die Feinformung. Ein Henkel wird angesetzt. Mit einem Zahnrad werden die Außenflächen des Brenners mit geometrischen Ornamenten dekoriert; die Verzierung des Henkels erfolgt mit einer Nadel. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Töpfer aus Tarim ausgeführt.
    Abstract: A heap of clay is given a roughly quadrangular shape. Then the sides are made concave on a container which serves as support. The censer is given the final touches on a clay disc which serves as support. A handle is attached. A toothed wheel is used to decorate the outer surface of the censer with geometrical patterns: the decoration of the handle is done with a needle.

The labourer sits between the bamboo stalks, lays two beams before him on the grass, and takes a handful of grass-blades; he bends these blades in the middle and puts them around the beam on the right, binding them with a bamboo strip. The beam on the left is only used as support for the bent grass and is taken out when the mat is ready.

    Abstract: Ton wird mit einer Erdhacke zerkleinert, mit Wasser vermengt und mit gesiebtem Eselmist gemagert. Der Töpfer aus Tarim knetet ihn erst mit den Füßen, dann mit den Händen. Danach beginnt er, aus einem Wulst den Körper des Steinbocks zu formen. Aus einem Tonklumpen modelliert er den Kopf mit dem Gehörn, den er dem Körper ansetzt. Zum Schluß werden Schwanz und Ohren ausgearbeitet.
    Abstract: Pottery-clay is hacked with a hoe, mixed with water and made lighter with sifted donkey-dung. The potter kneads the clay with his feet, then with his hands. He starts then giving shape to heap of clay and forms the body of an ibex. A lump is given the shape of the head and horns and then joined to the bodey. At the end the tail and ears are worked out.

    Abstract: Mit Hilfe eines hölzernen Rahmens stellen Männer aus Tarim aus mit Häcksel und Wasser vermengtem Lehm eines Gartens Ziegel, die zum Trocknen in langen Reihen aufgestellt werden. Anschließend wird aus Lehm, Wasser und Häcksel Mörtel bereitet, der schichtweise auf eine befeuchtete Grundmauer aufgetragen wird; darauf werden die Ziegel in der Art des Läuferverbandes in Abtreppungen gelegt. Beim Aufbau werden Lot und Richtschnur benutzt. Mit der Hand wird mit Häcksel vermengter Lehm als Verputz aufgetragen.
    Abstract: In a garden, a group of brick-makers dig out a part of the fertile earth to make bricks. Water from an irrigation canal is directed into a ditch where the earth is mixed with clay and chaff. Bricks are made out of this mixture with the help of a wooden frame. After being left to dry for eight hours the bricks are lined up in long rows. Two or three days later they are piled up to be taken away. - The building of a wall follows. Near a masonry foundation mortar is made of clay, water and chaff. The mason moistens the foundation and spreads on it a layer of loam. A helper hands him the smoothed claybricks. The buildung of the wall is done with plummet and plumb-line. A coating of a mixture of clay and chaff is finally added by hand.

A red cotton thread is passed through the warp by hand. Thus a ribbon is made the edges of which are formed by the two rows of pearls. The end of the ribbon is finally decorated with a tassel of variously coloured cotton threads.

    Abstract: Salanang Sen Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, bringt am Neujahrstag als Oberhaupt seiner Familie ein Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister dar.
    Abstract: This sacrifice addresses the ancestor spirits. In front of the entrance of the shaman's house the ritual objects are assembled on a small altar table: incense sticks, alcholic liquid in bowls, rice, and spirit paper. The shaman standing in front of the altar invokes the spirits. He throws the oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted and gives the fowl to two women who slaughter it in the manner required by ritual. Blood is sprinkled on the altar, on the rice and on the spirit paper. After the fowl is boiled it is brought back to the altar table. A pair of cymbals, a burning oil lamp, and smoking incense sticks are placed next to it. The shaman comes back to the altar table and continues its invocations. He throws again the oracle rods. Finally he burns the spirit paper, picks up the oracle rods and returns into his house. Members of the family remove the altar table and carry the ritual objects to the ancestor shrine inside the house.

Mit einer Pinzette legt er kleine glühende Holzkohlenstücke auf den Pfeifenkopf und steckt ihn auf das Rohr. Nach kräftigem Ansaugen wird das Mundstück beim Ausblasen mit dem Daumen verschlossen, um ein Entweichen des Rauches zu verhindern.

    Abstract: Eine ca. 30 cm hohe Säulentrommel wird zuerst roh, dann fein zubehauen. Aus Lehm, Wasser und Häcksel wird ein Mörtel bereitet. Am Boden wird eine Vertiefung für eine Säule ausgehoben und mit Lehm ausgestrichen. Hier baut der Steinmetz aus Tarim aus mehreren Säulentrommeln eine Säule auf, wobei er den vorbereiteten Mörtel verwendet. Die Säule wird mit Lehm verputzt und mit gelöschtem Kalk bestrichen.
    Abstract: A drum for a column about 30 cm in height is first rough-hewn, then trimmed. Mortar is prepared by mixing clay, water and chaff. A hole for a column is dug out and coated with clay. The stonemason builds a column out of several drums, joining them with the mortar which he has prepared. The column is plastered with clay and painted with slaked lime.

    Abstract: Der Drechsler aus Tarim sägt ein Holzstück in der Größe des gewünschten Mörsers ab. Mit einer Dechsel gibt er ihm eine in etwa konische Form; die Höhlung hebt er roh mit einem Meißel aus. Nach Bestimmung des Mittelpunktes schlägt er den Drehzapfen ein und spannt das Werkstück in den Drehstuhl ein, der mittels eines Bogens angetrieben wird. Dann zentriert er das Werkstück. Die Außenseite wird zuerst mit einem Spitzmeißel, dann mit einem Flachmeißel bearbeitet. Danach dreht er die Höhlung des Mörsers aus.
    Abstract: The turner saws off a chunk of wood as big as the mortar he wants to make. He gives it a conical shape with an adze and hollows it roughly with a chisel. After these preliminary steps, he marks the centre of the chunk, fastens the gudgeon and fixes the workpiece on a turning-lathe which is driven by means of a bow. He then centres the piece and works at the outer side with a pointed chisel, finishing it with a flat chisel. After this he turns the hollow of the mortar on the lathe.

    Abstract: Befestigen einiger Fasern am Haken der Spindelspitze, Herstellung kurzer Fadenlängen durch Drehungen der Spindel, Abrollen der Spindel auf dem Oberschenkel und freie Rotation am Faden, mit den Fingern kontinuierliches Nachziehen von Fasern und deren Verdrehung durch die rotierende Spindel, Aufwickeln fertig gesponnener Fadenlängen auf die Spindel. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Mädchen aus Ban Alm ausgeführt.
    Abstract: The spinner holds a spinning roll in her left hand, fixes a few fibres into the hook of the spindle point and makes a short thread by rotating the spindle in her hand. After this, she rolls the spindle on her tigh and lets it rotate freely on the thread. She continually draws out fibres and twists them by means of the rotating spindle. When the thread is spun it is spun it is wound on the spindle.

    Abstract: Five or six stones of the saba fruit are placed in a line on the ground. Three boys throw stones of the same type at them. The object of the game is for each player to knock down as many of the stones as he can. If all the players on one side have thrown, and if any of the stones are still standing, throwing is done from the other side. This goes on until all the stones have been knocked down. The player who has knocked down the largest number of stones is the winner.

    Abstract: The dance is performed around a green tree stuck in the ground. The girls dance in a double-row in an inner circle, whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. A reed organ player and a lute player take turns in leading the dance. The dance starts in a clockwise direction, changes then, and continues in an anti-clockwise direction up to the end.

    Abstract: Ein erhitztes flaches Eisenstück wird auf dem Amboß gebreitet und an der Spitze krumm geschmiedet. Mit einem kleinen Hammer wird das Blatt abgesetzt und die Griffzunge ausgearbeitet. Nach Abkühlen werden auf der Innenseite Zähne ausgefeilt. Heftring und Holzgriff werden angefertigt. Die Griffzunge wird in den Holzgriff gesteckt und der Heftring angebracht. Mit einem Bogenbohrer werden der Heftring und der Griff mit der Griffzange durchbohrt. Dann wird ein Nagel eingeschlagen. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Schmied aus Tarim ausgeführt.
    Abstract: A hot, flat piece of iron is flattened on the anvil to curve one of its points. The blade is marked and a tongue for the shaft is shaped with a small hammer. After the cooling the inner side is indented with a file. In the meantime another man prepares a ring and a piece of wood for the shaft. The tongue is inserted into the shaft and the ring put around to hold the two together. The ring, the tongue and the shaft are bored with a bow-drill and subsequently joined by a nail.

    Abstract: Aus aufbereitetem Ton formt der Töpfer aus Tarim eine Kugel und einen Wulst. Auf einer als Unterlage dienenden Tonscheibe werden der Gefäßboden aus der Tonkugel getrieben und die Gefäßwand aus dem Wulst aufgebaut. Dann setzt er den aus einem zweiten Wulst verfertigten Henkel an, durchstößt mit einem Finger die gegenüberliegende Seite der Gefäßwand und formt den Schnabel. Nach 24 Stunden entfernt er mit einem Messer die Unebenheiten und bemalt das befeuchtete Tongefäß mit roter Erdfarbe (geometrische Ornamente).
    Abstract: The potter forms a ball and a roll out of previously prepared clay. The bottom of the container is formed out of the ball, the sides out of the roll. The potter then adds the handle, wich he has made out a second roll; he pierces the opposite side with his finger to provide the container with a spout. 24 hours later he takes away the irregularities with a knife and paints the moistened container with red earth-colour (geometrical decorations).

    Abstract: Der Nagelstift wird aus einem gerollten rechteckigen Stück Eisenblech verfertigt. Für den Nagelkopf wird ein quadratisches Eisenblechstück rundgeschnitten und in einem Hohlamboß buckelförmig ausgeklopft. Nagelkopf und ein Stiftende werden im Feuer erhitzt und mit Lot und einem Flußmittel aus Blei und Zink verlötet. Nach dem Abkühlen wird der Nagelkopf abgefeilt, in flüssiges Blei getaucht und poliert. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Blechschmied aus Tarim ausgeführt.
    Abstract: A square and a rectangular piece of sheet-iron are needed to make a stud; these are cut out with scissors. The pin is made out of the rolled rectangle. For the head, a circle is cut out of the square and beaten into a convex shape on a hollow anvil. The head and one end of the pin are heated, then soldered with a mixture of zinc and lead; after it has cooled off, the nail is smoothed, then dipped in liquid lead and polished.

Die jetzt nebeneinanderliegenden Enden werden nach intensivem Erhitzen zur Klinge zusammengeschweißt. Das Öhr wird endgültig ausgeformt und die Klinge geschlichtet. Nach dem Abkühlen wird die Schneide mit einer Feile geschärft. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Schmied aus Tarim ausgeführt.
    Abstract: An iron-bar is heated, then lengthened, and finally widened in the middle. The workpiece is bent together, the widened middle is worked on a piece of bar-iron to make a loop, and the edges, which are now next to one another, are strongly heated and welded to form a blade. The eye is given its final shape and the blade is polished. The cutting edge is sharpened with a file after it has cooled.

    Abstract: Eine Schafshaut wird in Wasser gelegt und im erweichten Zustand nach Löchern abgesucht, die nachher mit zugeschnittenen Lederstücken doppelseitig abgedeckt und mit einem dünnen Lederstreifen vernäht werden. Anschließend wird die hintere Öffnung des Wassersackes vernäht. Der Schuster aus Tarim teilt die Läufe in Hälften, dreht sie zusammen und stellt einen vorderen und einen hinteren Henkel aus ihnen her. Mit dem Abrunden der Halsöffnung ist der Wassersack fertiggestellt.
    Abstract: A sheepskin is soaked in water and, softened, is searched for any holes it may have. The holes are covered on both sides with skin bits and then sewn with a thin leather strip. After patching all the holes in this way the back opening of the water sack is sewn. The shoemaker halves the legs, twists them together and makes a handle in front and one behind. The water sack is finished by rounding the neck opening.

    Abstract: Eine mit Holzkohle präparierte Hanfschnur wird mit Wasser befeuchtet und in der Mitte des Baumstammes entlang dem vorgesehenen Längsschnitt gespannt. Durch Zupfen wird auf jeder Seite des entrindeten Baumstammes eine gerade schwarze Linie markiert. Der Stamm wird dann in einen zweibeinigen Sägebock gelegt und von einem Tischler aus Tarim und seinem Gehilfen mit einer einblättrigen Rahmensäge auseinandergesägt.

First of all a hemp string prepared with charcoal is moistened and strung in the middle of the tree along the line where the cutting is to be done. A straight black line is drawn on each side of the barkless tree by pulling the string. The trunk is then laid on a two-legged sawing jack and is halved with a single-blade frame-saw.

    Abstract: Von einem dünnen Stück Eisenblech wird ein ca. 4 cm breiter Streifen abgeschlagen und auf einem Amboß geglättet. Mehrere Rhomben werden herausgeschlagen. In einem Untergesenke werden die Blechstücke zusammengebogen und auf dem Amboß spindelförmig geformt. Dadurch wird eine optimale Verstärkung des Materials erreicht. Die Stifte werden vor allem bei Anfertigung von Türen bzw. Haustoren verwendet. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Blechschmied aus Tarim ausgeführt.

    Abstract: Der Tischler aus Tarim stellt zwei Längshölzer und zwei Querhölzer mit Hilfe von Fuchsschwanzsäge, Dechsel und Hobel her und verzapft sie miteinander zu einem Fensterrahmen. Ebenfalls werden eine Zierleiste und ein Zierbrett hergestellt und eingefügt. Durch die Verzapfungsstellen werden mit einem Bogenbohrer Löcher gebohrt, in die Nägel eingeschlagen werden.
    Abstract: The joiner cuts four pieces of wood of two different lengths with the help of a dovetail-saw, an adze and a plane, and joins them by means of a mortise and tenon to form a window-frame. He adds a ledge and a board to the window-frame for decorative purposes. He bores holes with a bow-drill into the junctures of the frame and knofcks nails through them.

    Abstract: Am Tage vor dem Neujahrsfest führt Kee Seng Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, eine rituelle Schlachtung für seine eigene Familie als Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister durch.
    Abstract: A sacrifice to the ancestor spirits. The ritual objects are arranged on an altar table in front of the house. The shaman invokes the spirits. His body is moved convulsively indicating that he gets possessed by the spirits. After having cpmpleted the invocation he throws oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted. An animal sacrifice is then performed consisting in the slaughtering of a hog, the blood of which is finally sprinkled over the altar. The hog is then scalded, its bristles removed, it is washed in the river and cut up. Its head is placed on the altar, in front of which the shaman renews his invocations and throws the oracle rods once more. Finally, members of the family remove the altar.

    Abstract: Männer in der Nähe von Hue bauen ein etwa 3 m langes Zubringerboot aus Streifen von grünem Bambus: Ein oval begrenztes Diagonalgeflecht wird in der Mitte nach unten durchgebogen, mit seinem Rand an einem länglichen Rahmen aus festeren Latten festgebunden und mit einer Harzlösung abgedichtet.
    Abstract: Strips of green bamboo, of about a thumb's breadth, are plaited diagonally to produce an oval form. This form is depressed in the centre, and its edge is bound to an oblong frame of more substantial laths. The resulting boat, which is about 3 m in length, is tightend on the outside with a solution of resin. This is the most common type of small boat in South Vietnam.

    Abstract: The film shows the cleaning, tanning, dressing, and dyeing of an ibex skin by a man from Iskatul (Sanglic valley, Province of Badaxsan, North-East Afghanistan). The film commences with shots of the already lightly salted and dried skin being soaked and placed in the tanning solution and ends with a final softening of the tanned, dressed and dyed leather.

    Abstract: Auf einem weiten sandigen buddhistischen Gräberfeld am Rande der Stadt Hue wird ein Grab ausgeschachtet und ein Sarg hinuntergelassen. Anwesend sind die nahen Verwandten des Verstorbenen und einige buddhistische Mönche. Nachdem verschiedene Gebete gesprochen worden sind, wird das Grab mit Sand zugefüllt. Die Trauernden verlassen das Gräberfeld.
    Abstract: In a wide and sandy Buddhist burial-ground at the edge of the town of Hué a grave is dug and a coffin let down into it. The close relatives of the deceased, and a few Buddhist monks, are present. After various prayers have been said the grave is filled in with sand. The mourners leave the burial-ground.

    Abstract: The Buddhist new-year festival têt is celebrated as a public festival. A part of this festival, the religious ceremony shown in this film, is carried out by seven priest-monks at a pagoda near Hué, and is attended, however, only incidentally, and by only a small number of believers. Before the ceremony begins, the sounds of a bell, and of a gong hung at the entrance to the pagoda, drive away evil spirits. The chief priest and his assistants fall down in prayer before the brightly decorated alter. Then they pace solemnly around it several times.

Zwischen zwei Blattlagen gelegte Scherenschnitte aus Papier verzieren den Hut. Nach dem Zusammennähen wird der Hut mit einer Harzlösung imprägniert.
    Abstract: Two women bind fine strips of bamboo into rings of smaller and smaller diameter, laying them on a cone-shaped wooden frame. Oblong leaves, smoothed out and cut to shape, are strung on to a thread and distributed like the parts of a fan over the rings, which lie on the frame. Two such layers are laid one over the other. Paper silhouettes are spread out between them to form a decoration. Finally the layers of leaves are sewn in place on to the bamboo rings, and the leaves are cut flush with the rim of the hat.

    Abstract: The film demonstrates molding on a rotating molding disk, from the dressing of the molding sand down to the completion of three molds for copper, pots and plow share. Subsequently follows the firing and charging of a small furnace, a pit-furnace operated with a tube blast, with charcoal, pig iron, castings and limestone, as well as the tapping and filling of the molds. The molds are then smashed and the finished castwork is cleaned.

    Abstract: Einem geschlachteten Schaf werden die Sehnen herausgeschnitten. Während diese wässern, wird der Bogenstab geschnitzt. Die Tiersehnen werden gesplissen und zur Bogensehne zusammengedreht. Mit der getrockneten Sehne wird der Bogen zweifach bespannt. Nach dem Einsetzen der Lasche in die Mitte der Doppelsehne folgt ein Probeschuß.
    Abstract: Sinews are removed from a slaughtered sheep, soaked in water, and dried. A bow staff is carved. The sinews are freed from pieces of skin, splintered, and twisted into a bowstring. The bowstring is stretched twice on the staff, a small stick is introduced at one edge to spread the two strings. A leather socket to receive the missile is placed in the middle of the double string, a pellet is placed in the socket and discharged.
