    Kurzfassung: The Boundaries of Freedom brings together, for the first time in English, key scholars writing on the social and cultural history of Brazilian slavery, emphasizing the centrality of slavery, abolition, and Black subjectivity in the forging of modern Brazil, the largest and most enduring slave society in the Americas. Nearly five million enslaved Africans were forced to Brazil's shores over four and a half centuries, making slavery integral to every aspect of its colonial and national history, stretching beyond temporal and geographical boundaries. This book introduces English-language readers to a paradigm-shifting renaissance in Brazilian scholarship that has taken place in the past several decades, upending longstanding assumptions on slavery's relation to law, property, sexuality and family; reconceiving understandings of slave economies; and engaging with issues of agency, autonomy, and freedom. These vibrant debates are explored in fifteen essays that place the Brazilian experience in dialogue with the afterlives of slavery worldwide

    Kurzfassung: Jewish settlement in Asia, beyond the Middle East, is largely a modern phenomenon. Imperial expansion and adventurism by Great Britain and Russia were the chief motors that initially drove Jewish settlers to move eastwards, in the nineteenth century, combined as this was with the rise of port cities and general development of the global economy. The new immigrants soon become centrally involved, in ways quite disproportionate to their numbers, in Asian commerce. Their role and centrality finished with the outbreak of World War II, the chaos that resulted from the fighting, and the consequent collapse of Western imperialism. This unique, ground-breaking book charts their rise and fall while pointing to signs of these communities' post-war resurgence and revival. Fourteen chapters by many of the most prominent authorities in the field, from a range of perspectives, explore questions of identity, society, and culture across several Asian locales.     Kurzfassung: Studies of the peoples of Anatolia take for granted the existence and importance of regional ethnic communities on the peninsula when investigating issues of identity, ethnic origins, and cultural assimilation (especially Hellenization). In reviewing the scholarship, Jeremy LaBuff argues that such assumptions lead to problematic conclusions that ignore or poorly apply recent theoretical work on ethnicity and current critiques of the assimilation model. A critical consideration of this work leads to an appreciation for the somewhat limited, and at times non-existent, role of regional ethnicity to the experiences of the inhabitants and communities of Anatolia, who mainly promoted more local forms of belonging in the face of the attempted orderings of ethnographic and imperial discourses.

    Kurzfassung: "Communal Dining in the Roman West explores why the practice of privately sponsored communal dining gained popularity in certain parts of the Western Roman Empire for almost 300 years. This book brings together 350 Latin inscriptions to examine the benefactors and beneficiaries, the geographical and chronological distributions, and the relationship between public and collegial dining practices. It argues that food-related euergetism was a region-specific phenomenon which was rooted in specific social and political cultures in the communities of Italy, Baetica and Africa Proconsularis. The region-specific differences in political cultures and long-term changes in these cultures are key to understanding not only the long persistence of this practice but also its ultimate disappearance"--

    Kurzfassung: "The study of childhood has been dominated by the field of psychology but a robust tradition in anthropology, dating at least to Mead's (1928/1961) Coming of Age in Samoa, calls attention to the culture-bound flaw in psychology. Mead's work undermined the claim by psychologist G. Stanley Hall that stress was inevitably part of adolescence. Less well known was Malinowski's earlier critique of Freud's Oedipal theory based on fieldwork in the Trobriand Islands (Malinowski 1927/2012). Universal stage theories of cognitive development, such as that of Jean Piaget, met a similar fate when cross-cultural comparative studies demonstrated profound and unpredicted influences of culture and school attendance (Greenfield 1966; Lancy and Strathern 1981; Lancy 1983). Ochs and Schieffelin's (1984) analysis of adult-child language interaction also showed that ethnographic studies in non-Western societies could be used to "de-universalize" claims made in mainstream developmental psychology. Bob LeVine has taken on one of psychology's most sacred cows, mother-infant attachment (see also Scheper-Hughes 1987a). LeVine's observations of agrarian, East African Gusii parents suggest the possibility of weak attachment and consequent blighted 28 development. He finds that, while mothers respond promptly to their infant's distress signals, they ignore other vocalizations such as babbling. They rarely look at their infants or speak to them-even while breastfeeding. Later, when they do address their children, they use commands and threats rather than praise or interrogatives (LeVine 2004: 154, 156). In spite of these obvious signs of "pathology" on the part of Gusii mothers, LeVine and his colleagues-who have been studying Gusii villagers for decades-find no evidence of widespread emotional crippling. He argues that the problem of excessive claims of universality arises from the "child development field's dual identity as an ideological advocacy movement for the humane treatment of children and a scientific research endeavor seeking knowledge and understanding" (LeVine 2004: 151)"--

    Kurzfassung: By applying a comparative approach the volume focuses on a select group of „empires“ which are generally not in the focus of empires studies. They are studied in detail and analyzed due to a strict concept that takes into account real history and reception history as well. Reception history becomes more and more an important element in empire studies although this topic is still often more or less underdeveloped. The volume singles out a series of such “forgotten empires”. It aims to provide a methodologically clearly structured as well as a uniform and consistent approach. It develops a general set of questions that help to compare and distinguish these entities. This way the volume intends to examine and to illuminate empires that are generally ignored by modern scholarship. The Editors Michael Gehler is professor of history at the University of Hildesheim and Jean Monnet Chair for European Integration Studies, as well as Senior Fellow at the Center of European Integration Research/University of Bonn, Germany.     Kurzfassung: This book is a theoretical inquiry on the relation of the body politic with the religious movements in the time between the Constitutional Revolution and the Islamic Revolution in Iran; it illustrates speculative and historical analyses on the relationship of state, religion, and socio-political status in the late Qajar dynasty (1905-1925) and the whole Pahlavi monarchy. Particularly, it examines the applicability of “liberal conservatism” to the era of the last Shah of Iran. The thesis defines the term political conservatism in accord with Edmund Burke’s philosophy. It deals next with the definition of religious reformation, the peculiar characteristics of Islam, the Shi'ite political theology, and the contradictory usages of “Islamic reformation” in the literature. The text gives an overview of the two antagonist sides of nationalism. It provides also an analysis of the Islamic Republic as a new political phenomenon in Iranian history and the transformation of all concepts after 1979. Ayatollahi aims to assess the Iranian conservatism, the possibility of conciliation between politics and religion before the collapse of the Pahlavi, and “the conditions of possibility” for any restoration of the monarchy. About the author Amir Yahya Ayatollahi received his Ph.D. from the University of Vechta, Germany. His fields of interest are political philosophy, modern Middle East, Iranian studies, and Shi'ism.

    Kurzfassung: Dieses Open-Access-Buch beschäftigt sich mit dem Einfluss des meritokratischen Prinzips auf die Wertschätzung beruflicher Bildung gegenüber allgemeiner bzw. akademischer Bildung. Diesen Einfluss untersucht die Autorin sowohl allgemein, das heißt auf idealtypischer Ebene, als auch in Bezug auf die Ukraine. Als Ergebnis zeigt die Studie, dass das meritokratische Leistungsprinzip idealtypisch und auch im Falle der Ukraine als Katalysator für nachteilige Entwicklungen wirkt, was die Wertschätzung beruflicher Bildung und die Erfüllung ihrer gesellschaftlichen Funktion anbelangt. Die Autorin Vera Braun ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Wirtschaftspädagogik I der Universität Konstanz. Ihre Forschungsinteressen gelten makroperspektivischen Fragestellungen der Berufs- und Berufsbildungsforschung, der international vergleichenden Berufsbildungsforschung, insbesondere im post-sowjetischen Raum, und der gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung der beruflichen Bildung.

    Kurzfassung: Crossing cultural boundaries in East Asia and beyond' explores the personal complexities and ambiguities, and the successes and failures, of crossing borders and boundaries. While the focus is on East Asia, it universalizes cultural anxieties with comparative cases in Russia and the United States. The authors primarily engage the individual experiences of border-crossing, rather than more typically those of political or social groups located at territorial boundaries. Drawing on those individual experiences, this volume presents an array of attempts to negotiate the discomforts of crossing personal borders, and attends to the intimate experiences of border crossers, whether they are traveling to an unfamiliar cultural location or encountering the ?other? in local settings such as the classroom or the coffee shop.

    Kurzfassung: "In the past decade, the Kurdish question has re-established itself at the heart of the regional political debates at a time when the Middle East is once again engulfed in conflict and violence. On numerous occasions during the second half of the 20th century, Kurdish nationalism has managed to generate and maintain strong appeal amongst Kurdish populations in Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria, but these states have perceived Kurdish ambitions as a threat to their national security and regional stability. At the beginning of the 21st century, Kurdish political activism has reached a new height with Kurdish movements in Iraq, Turkey and Syria establishing themselves as important political actors in the domestic politics of these states. The consolidation of Kurdish autonomy in Iraq in 2005 and the establishment of a Kurdish de facto autonomous region within Syria in 2012 have turned the Kurds into actors capable of influencing regional political developments and resultantly enabled them to forge stronger relations with the international forces involved in the region. The rise of the pro- Kurdish movement in Turkish politics in the past two decades, especially its strong electoral performance in a number of elections since 2015, has placed the Kurds at the heart of the political developments in Turkey too"

    Kurzfassung: "In Urban Rituals in Sacred Landscapes in Hellenistic Asia Minor, Christina G. Williamson examines the phenomenon of monumental sanctuaries in the countryside of Asia Minor that accompanied the second rise of the Greek city-state in the Hellenistic period. Moving beyond monolithic categories, Williamson provides a transdisciplinary frame of analysis that takes into account the complex local histories, landscapes, material culture, and social and political dynamics of such shrines in their transition towards becoming prestigious civic sanctuaries. This frame of analysis is applied to four case studies: the sanctuaries of Zeus Labraundos, Sinuri, Hekate at Lagina, and Zeus Panamaros. All in Karia, these well-documented shrines offer valuable insights for understanding religious strategies adopted by emerging cities as they sought to establish their position in the expanding world"--

    Kurzfassung: Das Open Acess Buch «Soziale Arbeit in der Suchtprävention und Suchthilfe der Deutschsprachigen Schweiz» hat die Professionalisierung der Sozialen Arbeit in der Suchtarbeit zum Ziel. In einem ersten Schritt soll mittels einer Fachpublikation eine Bestandsaufnahme zur Sozialen Arbeit in den Arbeitsfeldern der Suchtprävention und Suchthilfe gemacht werden. Darauf aufbauend wird in einem nächsten Schritt eine Tagung organisiert und die Resultate zur Diskussion gestellt und erste Empfehlungen formuliert. Anschliessend sollen weitere (forschungsbasierte) Entwicklungsschritte zum Thema lanciert werden. Im Buch werden die Arbeitsfelder der Sozialen Arbeit sowohl im ambulanten, aufsuchenden wie auch stationären Setting der Suchthilfe und der Suchtprävention in der deutschsprachigen Schweiz dargestellt und diskutiert.     Kurzfassung: Erst mit jahrzehntelanger Verspätung kamen die Belange ehemaliger Heimkinder in den Fokus von Politik und Öffentlichkeit, sodass in Folge des Runden Tisches Heimerziehung auch in Bayern eine Anlauf- und Beratungsstellen für ehemalige Heimkinder eingerichtet wurde. Die vorliegende Studie weist nach, dass die Arbeit der bayerischen Anlauf- und Beratungsstelle insgesamt einen wirksamen und nachhaltigen Beitrag zur Unterstützung ehemaliger Heimkinder und zur Aufarbeitung ihres Schicksals leistete. Dies vor dem Hintergrund eines bislang noch nicht bekannten und in diesem Buch nachgewiesenen Ausmaßes an Vernachlässigung, Misshandlung und sexualisierter Gewalt in Kinderheimen zwischen 1949 und 1975. Systematische biografische Rekonstruktionen ermöglichen darüber hinaus umfassende Einblicke in die gesundheitlichen, sozialen und beruflichen Auswirkungen dieser frühen Schädigungen auf das gesamte Leben der betroffenen Frauen und Männer, wobei aber auch deren Überlebensressourcen erkennbar werden. Diese Aufarbeitungsstudie stellt auch eine Mahnung an die gegenwärtige stationäre Kinder- und Jugendhilfe dar, indem sie alle Formen von Gewalt, Vernachlässigung und Machtmissbrauch in ihren zerstörerischen Wirkungen auf die betroffenen jungen Menschen in beklemmender Weise beschreibt. Die Autor*innen Dr. Peter Caspari (ehem. Mosser) ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Praxisforschung und Projektberatung (IPP) und arbeitet als Berater und Therapeut in der Fachberatungsstelle KIBS (Kinderschutz München e.V.) in München.     Kurzfassung: In dem vorliegenden Buch wird erstmalig im Rahmen einer qualitativen Untersuchung im deutschsprachigen Raum anhand problemzentrierter Interviews untersucht, welche Erfahrungen Akteur*innen des Kinderschutzes mit Disclosureprozessen betroffener Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund haben und inwiefern dabei städtische und ländliche Räume eine Rolle spielen. Die Daten wurden mittels qualitativer Inhaltsanalyse nach Mayring (2015) ausgewertet und die Ergebnisse aufgrund des gegenwärtigen Anspruchs einer systemischen Betrachtung von Disclosureprozessen in das ökosystemische Entwicklungsmodell nach Bronfenbrenner (1981) integriert. Influenzierende Faktoren auf Disclosureprozesse lassen sich in allen Systemen (Mikro-, Meso-, Exo- und Makrosystem) benennen, wobei insbesondere hervorgehoben werden kann, dass im Feld handelnde Akteur*innen diese macht- und dominanzkritisch reflektieren müssen. Darüber hinaus besteht vor allem die Notwendigkeit, das Exosystem, sprich das System, an dem betroffene Kinder nicht direkt beteiligt sind, aber davon beeinflusst werden (z.B. die Interkulturelle Öffnung von Einrichtungen), näher zu betrachten. Die Autorin Sophie Weingraber hat als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Fachbereich Erziehungswissenschaften an der Universität Vechta gearbeitet und promoviert.
