    Abstract: By means of a question-and-answer procedure the medicine-man and his assistant find coins previously hidden in the clothing of the patient, thus demonstrating their extraordinary capabilities and establishing a doctor-patient relationship full of confidence. The dance which follows serves the same purpose. The diagnosis is carried out by means of a clairvoyant question-and-answer procedure, dancing, and oracles. Finally the treatment of a case in shown, with stroking of the patient's body and shadow, wetting with an oily liquid, and scratching of the skin.

    Abstract: Am Ende des Schuljahres versammeln sich die Schüler mit zwei Fahnen, Armbrüsten und hölzernen Vögeln und ziehen unter Musikbegleitung durch die Stadt. Am Festplatz werden die hölzernen Vögel aufgestellt. Die Jungen der Mittel- und Oberstufen schießen mit der Armbrust nach dem Vogel. Wer ein Teil des Vogels heruntergeschossen hat, erhält dies als Trophäe. Der zum Schluß ermittelte Sieger wird von seinen Kameraden auf die Schulter genommen.
    Abstract: At the close of the school year the pupils gather with two flags, crossbows and wooden birds, and form a procession through the town with accompanying music. The wooden birds are set up on the festive square. Anyone who shoots down a part of the bird with the bolt (the crossbow projectile), receives it as a trophy. When the winner has been found, he is lifted on to the shoulders of his comrades.

In dieses Loch wird der Drehzapfen eingepaßt. Darauf fertigt der Steinmetz aus Tarim den oberen Mahlstein mit einem Handgriff an der Oberseite an.
    Abstract: A block of stone is cut into rough shape, then finely finished. The grinding surface is roughened, a mortise is punched out with a hammer, and a pivot fitted into it. Then the stonemason shapes the upper millstone with a handle on the upper side.

    Abstract: Eine ca. 30 cm hohe Säulentrommel wird zuerst roh, dann fein zubehauen. Aus Lehm, Wasser und Häcksel wird ein Mörtel bereitet. Am Boden wird eine Vertiefung für eine Säule ausgehoben und mit Lehm ausgestrichen. Hier baut der Steinmetz aus Tarim aus mehreren Säulentrommeln eine Säule auf, wobei er den vorbereiteten Mörtel verwendet. Die Säule wird mit Lehm verputzt und mit gelöschtem Kalk bestrichen.
    Abstract: A drum for a column about 30 cm in height is first rough-hewn, then trimmed. Mortar is prepared by mixing clay, water and chaff. A hole for a column is dug out and coated with clay. The stonemason builds a column out of several drums, joining them with the mortar which he has prepared. The column is plastered with clay and painted with slaked lime.

    Abstract: Ton wird mit einer Erdhacke zerkleinert, mit Wasser vermengt und mit gesiebtem Eselmist gemagert. Der Töpfer aus Tarim knetet ihn erst mit den Füßen, dann mit den Händen. Danach beginnt er, aus einem Wulst den Körper des Steinbocks zu formen. Aus einem Tonklumpen modelliert er den Kopf mit dem Gehörn, den er dem Körper ansetzt. Zum Schluß werden Schwanz und Ohren ausgearbeitet.
    Abstract: Pottery-clay is hacked with a hoe, mixed with water and made lighter with sifted donkey-dung. The potter kneads the clay with his feet, then with his hands. He starts then giving shape to heap of clay and forms the body of an ibex. A lump is given the shape of the head and horns and then joined to the bodey. At the end the tail and ears are worked out.

    Abstract: Aus einem Tonklumpen wird das Material vorerst quaderförmig grob geformt; die Seitenflächen werden auf einem als Unterlage dienenden Gefäß konkav geformt. Auf einer als Unterlage dienenden Tonscheibe erfolgt die Feinformung. Ein Henkel wird angesetzt. Mit einem Zahnrad werden die Außenflächen des Brenners mit geometrischen Ornamenten dekoriert; die Verzierung des Henkels erfolgt mit einer Nadel. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Töpfer aus Tarim ausgeführt.
    Abstract: A heap of clay is given a roughly quadrangular shape. Then the sides are made concave on a container which serves as support. The censer is given the final touches on a clay disc which serves as support. A handle is attached. A toothed wheel is used to decorate the outer surface of the censer with geometrical patterns: the decoration of the handle is done with a needle.

    Abstract: The potter lays a coil of clay as thick as an arm on a piece of sackcloth, spreads it and gives it a rectangular shape. He presses the clay to the sides and pulls it up in order to form the side walls, he then puts a cylindrical smooth piece of wood in the hollow which he has thus formed and causes the sides to overlap. He smooths the juncture and takes the piece of wood out.

    Abstract: Aus aufbereitetem Ton formt der Töpfer aus Tarim eine Kugel und einen Wulst. Auf einer als Unterlage dienenden Tonscheibe werden der Gefäßboden aus der Tonkugel getrieben und die Gefäßwand aus dem Wulst aufgebaut. Dann setzt er den aus einem zweiten Wulst verfertigten Henkel an, durchstößt mit einem Finger die gegenüberliegende Seite der Gefäßwand und formt den Schnabel. Nach 24 Stunden entfernt er mit einem Messer die Unebenheiten und bemalt das befeuchtete Tongefäß mit roter Erdfarbe (geometrische Ornamente).
    Abstract: The potter forms a ball and a roll out of previously prepared clay. The bottom of the container is formed out of the ball, the sides out of the roll. The potter then adds the handle, wich he has made out a second roll; he pierces the opposite side with his finger to provide the container with a spout. 24 hours later he takes away the irregularities with a knife and paints the moistened container with red earth-colour (geometrical decorations).

    Abstract: Mit Hilfe eines hölzernen Rahmens stellen Männer aus Tarim aus mit Häcksel und Wasser vermengtem Lehm eines Gartens Ziegel, die zum Trocknen in langen Reihen aufgestellt werden. Anschließend wird aus Lehm, Wasser und Häcksel Mörtel bereitet, der schichtweise auf eine befeuchtete Grundmauer aufgetragen wird; darauf werden die Ziegel in der Art des Läuferverbandes in Abtreppungen gelegt. Beim Aufbau werden Lot und Richtschnur benutzt. Mit der Hand wird mit Häcksel vermengter Lehm als Verputz aufgetragen.
    Abstract: In a garden, a group of brick-makers dig out a part of the fertile earth to make bricks. Water from an irrigation canal is directed into a ditch where the earth is mixed with clay and chaff. Bricks are made out of this mixture with the help of a wooden frame. After being left to dry for eight hours the bricks are lined up in long rows. Two or three days later they are piled up to be taken away. - The building of a wall follows. Near a masonry foundation mortar is made of clay, water and chaff. The mason moistens the foundation and spreads on it a layer of loam. A helper hands him the smoothed claybricks. The buildung of the wall is done with plummet and plumb-line. A coating of a mixture of clay and chaff is finally added by hand.

    Abstract: Von einem dünnen Stück Eisenblech wird ein ca. 4 cm breiter Streifen abgeschlagen und auf einem Amboß geglättet. Mehrere Rhomben werden herausgeschlagen. In einem Untergesenke werden die Blechstücke zusammengebogen und auf dem Amboß spindelförmig geformt. Dadurch wird eine optimale Verstärkung des Materials erreicht. Die Stifte werden vor allem bei Anfertigung von Türen bzw. Haustoren verwendet. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Blechschmied aus Tarim ausgeführt.

    Abstract: Der Nagelstift wird aus einem gerollten rechteckigen Stück Eisenblech verfertigt. Für den Nagelkopf wird ein quadratisches Eisenblechstück rundgeschnitten und in einem Hohlamboß buckelförmig ausgeklopft. Nagelkopf und ein Stiftende werden im Feuer erhitzt und mit Lot und einem Flußmittel aus Blei und Zink verlötet. Nach dem Abkühlen wird der Nagelkopf abgefeilt, in flüssiges Blei getaucht und poliert. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Blechschmied aus Tarim ausgeführt.
    Abstract: A square and a rectangular piece of sheet-iron are needed to make a stud; these are cut out with scissors. The pin is made out of the rolled rectangle. For the head, a circle is cut out of the square and beaten into a convex shape on a hollow anvil. The head and one end of the pin are heated, then soldered with a mixture of zinc and lead; after it has cooled off, the nail is smoothed, then dipped in liquid lead and polished.

    Abstract: A strip of sheet-iron about 2 cm wide is cut off smoothed. The central part of this strip is bent over the round arm of a pair of tongs. The curved part is shaped into a loop on the anvil. The edges are filed and the arms of the tongs given a somewhat convex bent.

    Abstract: Der Schmied aus Tarim legt eine Schablone auf ein Blechstück, ritzt den Trichterumriß ein und schneidet ihn aus. Er wird zusammengebogen und gefalzt. Dann werden die Stücke für Abflußrohr, Henkel und oberen Rand ausgeschnitten; Rohr und Rand werden gefalzt. Die Falznähte der Einzelteile werden verlötet und der Trichter wird zusammengesetzt, wobei das obere Rohrende mit einem feinen Drahtsieb versehen wird. Schließlich werden Rohr, Trichter, Rand und Henkel aneinandergelötet.
    Abstract: A tin-can is cut into pieces, which are smoothed. The smith lays a pattern on a piece of tin, scratches the outline of the funnel and cuts it out. It is then bent over and welted. After this the pieces for the pipe, the handle and the upper edge are cut out. Pipe and rim are welted. The weltings are soldered and put together, a fine sifting-web is placed on the top end of the pipe. Finally the pipe, funnel, rim and handle are soldered together.

    Abstract: Eine mit Holzkohle präparierte Hanfschnur wird mit Wasser befeuchtet und in der Mitte des Baumstammes entlang dem vorgesehenen Längsschnitt gespannt. Durch Zupfen wird auf jeder Seite des entrindeten Baumstammes eine gerade schwarze Linie markiert. Der Stamm wird dann in einen zweibeinigen Sägebock gelegt und von einem Tischler aus Tarim und seinem Gehilfen mit einer einblättrigen Rahmensäge auseinandergesägt.

First of all a hemp string prepared with charcoal is moistened and strung in the middle of the tree along the line where the cutting is to be done. A straight black line is drawn on each side of the barkless tree by pulling the string. The trunk is then laid on a two-legged sawing jack and is halved with a single-blade frame-saw.

    Abstract: An iron-bar is heated, then lengthened, and finally widened in the middle. The workpiece is bent together, the widened middle is worked on a piece of bar-iron to make a loop, and the edges, which are now next to one another, are strongly heated and welded to form a blade. The eye is given its final shape and the blade is polished. The cutting edge is sharpened with a file after it has cooled.

Ebenfalls werden eine Zierleiste und ein Zierbrett hergestellt und eingefügt. Durch die Verzapfungsstellen werden mit einem Bogenbohrer Löcher gebohrt, in die Nägel eingeschlagen werden.
    Abstract: The joiner cuts four pieces of wood of two different lengths with the help of a dovetail-saw, an adze and a plane, and joins them by means of a mortise and tenon to form a window-frame. He adds a ledge and a board to the window-frame for decorative purposes. He bores holes with a bow-drill into the junctures of the frame and knofcks nails through them.

    Abstract: Der Drechsler aus Tarim sägt ein Holzstück in der Größe des gewünschten Mörsers ab. Mit einer Dechsel gibt er ihm eine in etwa konische Form; die Höhlung hebt er roh mit einem Meißel aus. Nach Bestimmung des Mittelpunktes schlägt er den Drehzapfen ein und spannt das Werkstück in den Drehstuhl ein, der mittels eines Bogens angetrieben wird. Dann zentriert er das Werkstück. Die Außenseite wird zuerst mit einem Spitzmeißel, dann mit einem Flachmeißel bearbeitet. Danach dreht er die Höhlung des Mörsers aus.
    Abstract: The turner saws off a chunk of wood as big as the mortar he wants to make. He gives it a conical shape with an adze and hollows it roughly with a chisel. After these preliminary steps, he marks the centre of the chunk, fastens the gudgeon and fixes the workpiece on a turning-lathe which is driven by means of a bow. He then centres the piece and works at the outer side with a pointed chisel, finishing it with a flat chisel. After this he turns the hollow of the mortar on the lathe.

Mit einer Pinzette legt er kleine glühende Holzkohlenstücke auf den Pfeifenkopf und steckt ihn auf das Rohr. Nach kräftigem Ansaugen wird das Mundstück beim Ausblasen mit dem Daumen verschlossen, um ein Entweichen des Rauches zu verhindern.

    Abstract: A sheepskin is soaked in water and, softened, is searched for any holes it may have. The holes are covered on both sides with skin bits and then sewn with a thin leather strip. After patching all the holes in this way the back opening of the water sack is sewn. The shoemaker halves the legs, twists them together and makes a handle in front and one behind. The water sack is finished by rounding the neck opening.

    Abstract: Brahim, the artisan dies strips of goat's leather in black, red and yellow colour. The stiffening for the sheath are cut out of cardboard and wound with red leather. The leather ist stuck with glue onto cardboard pieces. Onto the red leather pieces of black leather are stuck, stitched on at the back and the seam covered by a dress-seam wich ends by a dress-knot. Likewise at the back, a loop is fixed on as an upper-arm ring. The dagger's handle, enfaced by bound material pieces, Brahim covers with red leather. In the form of drilling, Brahim turns the upper-arm ring out of thin leather strips and to complete it, pulls it through the intended loop of the dagger sheath.

    Abstract: By means of a pointed stick an about 13 year-old boy has his earlobes pierced. Thin wooden plugs are inserted into the holes in order to prevent the border of the wounds from coalescing. By degrees the plugs are replaced by thicker ones, aiming at a gradual enlargement of the earlobes. The swollen earlobes are cleaned and cooled with water. An adult inserts ear discs (approx. 8 cm diameter) in his fully widened earlobes.

    Abstract: A man from the village of Buariki harvests pandanus fruit in the bush. His wife back in the settlement prepares the fruit by mashing it, steaming it in an earth oven, and crushing the juicy base. The resulting pulpy substance is spread out on a leaf and is dried in the sun for a few days. These tuae are folded into packages and kept year-round as reserve food.

    Abstract: Rochen werden in der Lagune von Onotoa schwimmend und tauchend gejagt und mit einem Speer erlegt. Andere Fische werden mit Gummischleuder und Eisenpfeil geschossen. Muscheln werden auf dem Lagunengrund gesammelt. Von einem Segelboot aus wird in der Lagune von Nonouti ein großer Stachelrochen mit dem Speer erlegt.
    Abstract: Shows two scenes of ray hunting. In the western lagoon of Onotoa men swim and dive to hunt rays. When an animal has been speared it is transported home on a sailboat and is divided up on the beach. During the long excursion members of the crew shoot fish underwater with rubber slings and iron arrows. Mussels are caught on shore for immediate consumption. In the northern lagoon of Nonuti men are shown maneuvering their sailboat in the vicinity of a large stingray, and spearing it.

    Abstract: In der Siedlung Tetua befreit eine Frau vollreife Kokosnüsse von ihrer Faserhülle und schlägt sie auf. Nach dem Raspeln des Samenfleisches preßt sie den Saft aus und siedet ihn in Kokosnußschalen auf kleinem Feuer, bis sich das Öl absetzt. Nach Sieben und nochmaligem Erhitzen reichert sie es mit Duftstoffen an.
    Abstract: A woman in the village of Tetua grates the meat taken from fully ripened coconuts and presses the milk out of it. The resulting mash is boiled over a fire in coconut shell halves until just the oil remains. The oil is purified, reheated, and enriched with an aromatic substance.

    Abstract: Am Samstag vor Invokavit wird am Berg der Holzstoß aufgeschichtet sowie das Rad ausgestopft. Sonntagabend nach einem Gebet und dreimaligem Umschreiten wird der Holzstoß angezündet. Im Feuer werden die Holzscheiben zum Glühen gebracht und, von einem Spruch begleitet, mit Hilfe einer Rute in Richtung des Dorfes geschleudert. Das mit Stroh ausgestopfte Rad wird angezündet und den Hang hinuntergerollt. Anschließend Heischegang. Brauchträger sind junge Burschen.
    Abstract: On Saturday before Invocavit the lads prepare the bonfire and stuff the wheel with straw. On Sunday evening, after a prayer, they walk round the bonfire three times, then set light to it. Wooden discs are put into the fire until they glow. Then, accompanied with a saying, they are thrown down with the help of a stick in the direction of the village. The wheel stuffed with straw is set on fire and rolled down the hillside. Afterwards gift asking procession.

Dabei dreht er ein im Sprengloch steckendes Spitzeisen, um ein Loch für die Zündschnur auszusparen. Das Sprengloch wird mit feuchtem Lehm verschlossen. Dann wird die Zündschnur eingelegt und in Brand gesteckt.
    Abstract: A hollow is chiselled into a block of limestone. The stonemason fills gunpowder, which has been previously mixed with water, into the hollow, and rams it down with a round iron bar. With regular movements he turns a pointed iron in the hollow in order to make a hole for the quick match. The hollow is sealed with clay, the quick match inserted and lit.

    Abstract: Ein Mann aus Buariki erklettert eine Kokospalme und nimmt ein mit Saft gefülltes Gefäß unter einer dekapitierten Blütenstandsknospe ab. Um den Saftfluß anzuregen, schneidet er eine Scheibe vom umwickelten Knospenende ab und hängt ein leeres Gefäß, mit einem Kokosfiederblatt zur besseren Saftleitung, darunter. Nachdem er den Palmsaft gesiebt und mit Wasser stark verdünnt hat, trinkt er ihn mit seinen Kindern.
    Abstract: A man scales a coconut palm tree that is already prepared to tap for palm sap. Empty coconut shells are hung under the tap as containers to collect the sap. The resulting palm syrup is diluted with water and the man drinks it with his children.

An einer Kokosfaserschnur (40 m) läßt er den fertigen, etwa 130 cm breiten Drachen steigen.
    Abstract: A man from the atoll Onotoa builds the framework for a kite from pre-weighed sticks and binds them together with coconut leaf stems. This frame is covered with thin strips of pandanus leaves. The finished kite is attached to a string of thin coconut fiber cord and is flown.

    Abstract: Shows various techniques used by the people of the Gilbert Islands to fish: one man pegs his fishing lines to the shore of the lagoon on Nonouti and returns later to retrieve the catch; one man sits on a gangway near a rocky bank of Nonouti and uses mussel bait to catch fish, which he kills with a bite to the head; a man cuts his fishing rod from wood in the bush, catches small fish and hermit crabs as bait, and then angles successfully in the crevices of the reef; and in the open sea near Onotoa a man in a sailboat catches flying fish with coconut meat as bait.

    Abstract: Das Drehen der zweiadrigen Bänder aus Riedgras (Carex) für eine Stuhlbespannung wird ohne Werkzeuge nur durch die Reibbewegung der Handflächen durchgeführt. Das Beflechten der Sitzfläche eines Vierpfostenstuhles, eines bäuerlichen Armlehnstuhles von trapezförmigem Grundriß, erfolgt von den Rändern zur Mitte hin wachsend. Die Bespannung besteht aus drei Schichten mit diagonal verlaufenden Überkreuzungen, die den Eindruck eines Geflechts erweckt, obwohl die Bänder nur nebeneinander gelegt und umeinander geführt werden.

    Abstract: Ein erhitztes flaches Eisenstück wird auf dem Amboß gebreitet und an der Spitze krumm geschmiedet. Mit einem kleinen Hammer wird das Blatt abgesetzt und die Griffzunge ausgearbeitet. Nach Abkühlen werden auf der Innenseite Zähne ausgefeilt. Heftring und Holzgriff werden angefertigt. Die Griffzunge wird in den Holzgriff gesteckt und der Heftring angebracht. Mit einem Bogenbohrer werden der Heftring und der Griff mit der Griffzange durchbohrt. Dann wird ein Nagel eingeschlagen. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Schmied aus Tarim ausgeführt.
    Abstract: A hot, flat piece of iron is flattened on the anvil to curve one of its points. The blade is marked and a tongue for the shaft is shaped with a small hammer. After the cooling the inner side is indented with a file. In the meantime another man prepares a ring and a piece of wood for the shaft. The tongue is inserted into the shaft and the ring put around to hold the two together. The ring, the tongue and the shaft are bored with a bow-drill and subsequently joined by a nail.

Sie legt die Stücke zusammen mit grünen Kokosnußhüllen auf erhitzte Korallenkalksteine, bedeckt sie mit Blättern, gießt ein wenig Süßwasser in die Mitte und deckt das ganze mit zwei alten Matten zu. Nach etwa 2 Stunden sind die Knollenstücke gar.

    Abstract: Im Dorfe Buariki baut ein Mann mit Hilfe seiner Verwandten in 10tägiger Arbeit aus Pandanusholz ein wandloses Vierpfostenhaus von rechteckigem Grundriß mit einem Giebeldach. Das Haus hat eine etwa 1 m über dem Erdboden eingebaute, durchgehende Plattform. Das Dach ist mit aus Kokospalmblättern geflochtenen Elementen gedeckt.
    Abstract: Shows all of the important steps undertaken in a ten-day working period as a house is constructed in the village of Buariki on the atoll Tabiteuea. This sleeping house is built in a style which has been customary in the Gilbert Islands since the seventh century - a four-post house of rectangular design with a gable roof, no walls, and a platform built about one meter off the ground. While the men finish the frame construction the women work to make roof coverings from old coconut palm leaves which are tied to the lattice work.

    Abstract: A woman from the atoll Nonuti begins to prepare this dish by paring a taro bulb of the variety Cyrtosperma chamissonis, cutting it up into small pieces, and mashing it. Palm syrup and coconut milk are added to the mash which is kneaded and divided into small flat cakes. These cakes are tied up in leaves and are baked in an earth oven.

    Abstract: A granary roof severely damaged by the rains is to be replaced by a new one. After a search in the bush for suitable branches, the measurements of the old roof are taken, the truss erected from millet stalks, surrounded with dried bush grass, fastened with strips of bark and the top is attached. The ready roof is then lifted on to the granary and fixed to its rafters.

    Abstract: Auf einer Hochalm im Pinzgau wird süße Kuh- und Ziegenmilch im Kessel erhitzt und mit Lab versetzt. Nach Dicklegung wird die Masse gebrochen und verrührt, mit einem Sieb herausgeschöpft und in einem Holzreifen zu einem Käselaib gepreßt. Im Käsekeller wird der Käse mit Salz eingerieben und während des Reifens, das von innen nach außen erfolgt, mehrmals mit Molke oder Wasser gewaschen und gewendet.
    Abstract: On a high alpine pasture in the Pinzgau sweet and new cow's and goat's milk is heated in a vessel and rennet is added. The coagulated mass is then broken into pieces and stirred, taken out with a sieve, placed into a wooden hoop and pressed into the shape of a wheel. In the curing cave the "Pinzgauer cheese" is salted and in the course of the ripening process, which proceeds from the inside to the outside, repeatedly bathed in whey or water and turned.

    Abstract: Ein Mädchen aus dem Dorf Ban Alm bereitet das Garn zum Schären vor: Aufwickeln, Strangbildung, Schlichten mit Reismehlwasser, Trocknen. Nach dem Abwickeln des Garnes mit einer Kreuzhaspel werden sechs Schärpflöcke in die Erde geschlagen, und die Kette wird von zwei Frauen geschärt.
    Abstract: Thread from a wholly spun spindle is wound into a ball. The thread from the ball runs through a hollow bamboo stick which is held in the hand; then it is wound into a skein with the help of a double-T-shaped handreel. The skein is taken off the reel, starched in a solution of rice flour, and then strung between two poles to dry. When the skein is dry it is put on a reel and the thread is unwound into a basket. Six thread-beams are knocked into the ground and two women fix the warp.

    Abstract: Eine Frau aus Huye Luang drückt mit Hilfe eines Lineals und eines Ritzeisens ein aus Quadraten bestehendes Gitter auf ungefärbten Baumwollstoff. Dann trägt sie das Negativmuster in Wachs mit Batikfeder auf und färbt den Stoff in Indigo blau. Nach Auskochen des Wachses legt sie das Tuch auf die Trockenstange.
    Abstract: A lattice pattern is pressed into the undyed cotton cloth, and then the negative of a pattern is drawn in wax with the batik pen. The cloth is then dyed blue in indigo, and the wax is finally melted out by boiling.

    Abstract: Am Tage vor dem Neujahrsfest führt Kee Seng Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, eine rituelle Schlachtung für seine eigene Familie als Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister durch.
    Abstract: A sacrifice to the ancestor spirits. The ritual objects are arranged on an altar table in front of the house. The shaman invokes the spirits. His body is moved convulsively indicating that he gets possessed by the spirits. After having cpmpleted the invocation he throws oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted. An animal sacrifice is then performed consisting in the slaughtering of a hog, the blood of which is finally sprinkled over the altar. The hog is then scalded, its bristles removed, it is washed in the river and cut up. Its head is placed on the altar, in front of which the shaman renews his invocations and throws the oracle rods once more. Finally, members of the family remove the altar.

    Abstract: Salanang Sen Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, bringt am Neujahrstag als Oberhaupt seiner Familie ein Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister dar.
    Abstract: This sacrifice addresses the ancestor spirits. In front of the entrance of the shaman's house the ritual objects are assembled on a small altar table: incense sticks, alcholic liquid in bowls, rice, and spirit paper. The shaman standing in front of the altar invokes the spirits. He throws the oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted and gives the fowl to two women who slaughter it in the manner required by ritual. Blood is sprinkled on the altar, on the rice and on the spirit paper. After the fowl is boiled it is brought back to the altar table. A pair of cymbals, a burning oil lamp, and smoking incense sticks are placed next to it. The shaman comes back to the altar table and continues its invocations. He throws again the oracle rods. Finally he burns the spirit paper, picks up the oracle rods and returns into his house. Members of the family remove the altar table and carry the ritual objects to the ancestor shrine inside the house.

    Abstract: The dance is performed around a green tree stuck in the ground. The girls dance in a double-row in an inner circle, whilst the men form a chain as the outer circle. A reed organ player and a lute player take turns in leading the dance. The dance starts in a clockwise direction, changes then, and continues in an anti-clockwise direction up to the end.

    Abstract: In der Macherstube eines Bauernhofes in St. Jakob (Ahrntal) werden drei 3-4 m lange Baumstämme mit einem 2,5 m langen Rohrbohrer ausgehöhlt und die dickeren Enden konisch erweitert. Dann erfolgt das Verlegen eines Rohres in einen kleinen Graben und das Zuspitzen des dünnen Endes mit einem Beil. Anschließend wird es mit einem Zieheisen geglättet und in das liegengebliebene alte Stück des Wasserrohres eingeschoben. Undichte Stellen werden mit Moos abgedichtet. Die Rohre dienen als Wasserleitung von der Quelle zum Hof.
    Abstract: The film shows how a water supply made of trunks is being repaired. Trunks of 3 - 4 meters length are hollowed out; a 2.5 m long tube drill is used. The thick ends of these wooden tubes are widened and cone-shaped with a special tool (kachler). In the field, the thin ends of the trunks are tapered off with an axe and smoothed with a draw knife, and assembled. One tube is placed into a small ditch in the ground. Leakages are packed with moss as sealing material. The tubes fitted together serve as water supply from a well to the farm buildings.

    Abstract: Am Pfingstmontag wird ein Bursche in einer Scheune in grünes Laub eingehüllt. Dieser Butz wird in einem Reiterumzug mitgeführt und in der Mitte des Dorfes symbolisch getötet. Der Umzug endet auf einer Wiese, wo als Abschluß ein Pferderennen stattfindet. Sieger ist der Reiter, der den geschmückten Maibaum am Ende der Rennbahn im Vorbeireiten an sich reißen kann. Brauchträger sind die 20-21jährigen Burschen.
    Abstract: In a barn, a young man is enveloped in green foliage. This veiled figure is then led round in a procession of riders, and killed symbolically in the middle of the village. The procession ends on a meadow, where a horse-race serves as finale. The winner is the horseman who, riding past, succeeds in seizing hold of a decorated maypole at the end of the track.

The object of the game is for each player to knock down as many of the stones as he can. If all the players on one side have thrown, and if any of the stones are still standing, throwing is done from the other side. This goes on until all the stones have been knocked down. The player who has knocked down the largest number of stones is the winner.

    Abstract: Repairing of a damaged part of the lower dike slope caused by a storm tide. First the egdes of the damaged part are cut smooth and rectangular and the whole surface is made flat. Then sods are pared from the dike foreland with a sodding plough and a draw shovel and the damaged part is carefully filled in with them. Finally the repaired part is "sticked" with reed.

    Abstract: Ein Ringer, der sein Dorf auf einem der häufig am Ende der Erntezeit stattfindenden Ringerfeste vertreten soll, wird zu diesem Zweck von mehreren Helfern am ganzen Körper mit Asche bestreut und dann mit Tüchern, Bändern und anderen Utensilien angekleidet und ausgestattet, bevor er mit den Leuten seines Dorfes zu dem nahe liegenden Kampfplatz aufbricht.
    Abstract: A wrestler chosen to represent his village at one of the wrestling festivals held frequently at the end of harvest-time is sprinkled by several helpers all over with ashes and dressed with bolts and strips of cloth and other utensils, before he leaves, accompanied by the people of his village, for the nearby wrestling ground.

    Abstract: Befestigen einiger Fasern am Haken der Spindelspitze, Herstellung kurzer Fadenlängen durch Drehungen der Spindel, Abrollen der Spindel auf dem Oberschenkel und freie Rotation am Faden, mit den Fingern kontinuierliches Nachziehen von Fasern und deren Verdrehung durch die rotierende Spindel, Aufwickeln fertig gesponnener Fadenlängen auf die Spindel. Die Arbeiten werden von einem Mädchen aus Ban Alm ausgeführt.
    Abstract: The spinner holds a spinning roll in her left hand, fixes a few fibres into the hook of the spindle point and makes a short thread by rotating the spindle in her hand. After this, she rolls the spindle on her tigh and lets it rotate freely on the thread. She continually draws out fibres and twists them by means of the rotating spindle. When the thread is spun it is spun it is wound on the spindle.

    Abstract: Ein älterer Mann aus Ban Alm bindet aus Alang-Alang-Gras (Imperata cylindrica) und Bambusleisten eine Dachmatte, indem er jeweils eine Handvoll angefeuchtetes Gras in der Mitte knickt und mit einem Bambusstreifen um die Leiste festbindet.
    Abstract: Long dry grass is spread out across two bamboo stalks which are set up at some height; the grass is moistened. The labourer sits between the bamboo stalks, lays two beams before him on the grass, and takes a handful of grass-blades; he bends these blades in the middle and puts them around the beam on the right, binding them with a bamboo strip. The beam on the left is only used as support for the bent grass and is taken out when the mat is ready.

    Abstract: Two threads with white seed pearls and two strings consisting of seven cotton threads each are strung on a bamboo bow in the manner of a warp. A red cotton thread is passed through the warp by hand. Thus a ribbon is made the edges of which are formed by the two rows of pearls. The end of the ribbon is finally decorated with a tassel of variously coloured cotton threads.
