    Abstract: "This book, the English translation of La Culture des Apparences by Daniel Roche, is a study of dress in France in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries." "Roche discusses general approaches to the history of dress, locates the subject within current French historiography and uses a large sample of inventories to explore the differences between the various social classes in the amount they spent on clothes and the kind of clothes they wore. It is his belief that the choice of clothes, the trade in clothes and the perception of the function of clothing tells us more about the values of a society than the study of any other single commodity. For clothes have different uses according to who is wearing them, and in the period under discussion several discrete markets in clothing had already emerged. Roche's essential argument is that there was a 'vestimentary revolution' in the later eighteenth century as all sections of the population became caught up in the world of fashion and fast-moving consumption. This was an age of sumptuous fashion gravures and of a new press for ladies of leisure which provided their readers with a stimulating mixture of fashion and public affairs. He demonstrates that this was a period of revolutionary change in the ways in which Parisians thought of dress, for men as well as for women. There was a new concern for decency and respectability as well as a desire to impress."     Abstract: In The Origins of Industrial Capitalism in India, Rajnarayan Chandavarkar presents the first comprehensive study of the relationship between labour and capital in India's economic development in the early twentieth century. Hitherto the working class has been largely overlooked in Indian history. By focussing upon the economy of labour in Bombay city from 1900 to 1940, Dr Chandavarkar makes a major contribution to redressing this imbalance
    Abstract: The author explores the emergence of industrial capitalism in the region, the development of the cotton-textile industry, its particular problems in the 1920s and 1930s and both the millowners' and the state's responses to them. He also investigates how a labour force was formed in Bombay - its rural roots, urban networks, industrial organization and the ways in which it shaped capitalist strategies
    Abstract: In a subject dominated by the assumption of unities, Rajnarayan Chandavarkar convincingly demonstrates the fragmentation of class, on the side of capital as well as labour. Their interaction, indeed industrial development, sometimes exacerbated their internal differences: but the author also explores on what terms, to what ends and under what circumstances solidarities could be forged between workers

    Abstract: In an Alpine hut, the Alpine dairyman pours cream into the barrel-shaped butter churn. The butter churn is driven electromechanically and rotates around a horizontal central axle. The finished butter is kneaded in clear water, form with a wooden butter mould and packed in paper.

Juana spinnt diese, während José die Kettfäden schärt und verzettelt. Der Gaban wird auf einem Trittwebstuhl gewoben. Das brochierte Muster wird von José Sanchez Nunez, Sohn von José und Juana, gefertigt. Zum Schluß wäscht Juana die Fransen und verdreht sie.
    Abstract: A Gabial (poncho/scarf) for a child is being made. Juana Nunez Balverde washes and cleans the wool and her husband José Sanchez Vera combs it. Juana spins the wool whilst José prepares the warp. The Gaban is woven on a treadle-loom. The stitched pattern is made by José Sanchez Nunez, José son, together with Juana. Finally Juana washes and knots the fringe.

    Abstract: Zwei Pferdegespanne werden vor einen eisernen Pflug gespannt. Auf dem hinteren Sattelpferd reitet der Treiber, der Pflüger geht hinter dem Pflug. Gezeigt wird die Technik des "Auseinanderpflügens" auf einem ca. 16 m breiten und ca. 200 m langen Ackerstück in den holsteinischen Elbmarschen.
    Abstract: Two teams of horses are put to an iron plough, the driver is riding on the rear saddle-horse, the ploughman is guiding the plough. The film shows the technique of "ploughing apart" on an a piece of marsh-ploughland about 16 m wide and appr. 200 m long in the Holstein Elb-marshes.

Frau Ginting wird nach einem Krankenhausaufenthalt von Angehörigen am Dorfende empfangen. Nach Segenswünschen werden sie und ihr Ehemann mit Goldschmuck und Zeremonialtüchern geschmückt. Begleitet von Gendang-Musik werden sie zum Haus der Familie geführt. Die Guro Sibaso locken die Lebenskraft (Tendi) zur Stärkung der Frau mit weißen Tüchern an. Auf dem Tanzplatz werden Adat-Tänze getanzt. Mit einem gemeinsamen Essen wird der zeremonielle Teil des Festes abgeschlossen.
    Abstract: The ceremony (literally translated: 'to put rice on the head') is performed at a person's returning to a community. Mrs. Ginting, returning from hospital, is received by her relatives on the border of the village. Blessings are pronounced and she and her husband are decorated with gold jewellery and ceremonial cloths. Accompanied by gendang music, they are conducted to the family's house. The guru sibaso attract with white cloths the vital power (tendi) to strengthen the woman. Adat dances are performed on the dancing-ground. A common meal concludes the ceremonial part of the feast.

Dazu werden insgesamt fünf Farbschichten (erste und zweite Grundierung, Öllasur, Wasserlasur und Klarlack) aufgetragen. Die beiden Lasuren werden mit verschiedenen Maseriergeräten bearbeitet, um einen Eichenholz-Masereffekt zu erzielen.
    Abstract: A small old wall-cabinet gets a new painting imitating oak-grain. Five coats of paint have to be applied: first and second ground coat, oilglaze, water-glaze and clear varnish. Both glazes are treated with several veining-utensils in order obtain an oakwoodgrain effect.

    Abstract: In der für die Filmaufnahme bestellten Aufführung spielen fünf Musiker. Gendang sarunei heißt die offizielle Zeremonialmusik der Karo-Batak. Sie besteht aus einer Sarunei (Oboe), zwei Gendang-Trommeln und einem sehr großen wie einem sehr kleinen Gong. Das erste Stück Mari-mari (Komm herbei!) wird bei altreligiösen Zeremonien zur Geisteranrufung bei Besessenheitstänzen gespielt. Patam-patam, eine schnelle Tanzbegleitung, kann bei jeder offiziellen Festlichkeit erklingen.
    Abstract: Five musicians play in the performance booked for the film take. The official ceremonial music of the Karo-Batak is called Gendang sarunei. It is composed of a Sarunei (Oboe), two Gendang drums, and a very large gong as well as a small one. The first piece "Mari-mari" (Come over here!) is played in old religious ceremonies to call up the spirits in possession dances. Patam-patam, a rapid dance accompaniment, can be heard at any official festivity.

Baldambe, ein alter Hamar-Mann, erklärt in einer Reihe von Interviews den Filmemachern und Studenten der Universität Addis Abeba, wie die Hamar Ziegen halten, Sorghum anbauen, wilden Honig sammeln und die Wasservorräte verteilen. In jüngster Zeit sind jedoch die Dürreperioden bedrohlicher geworden. Baldambe bittet deshalb durch eine Anrufung um Regen.
    Abstract: Hamar country in southern Ethiopia has always faced the problem of drought. Baldambe, an old Hamar man, explains in a series of interviews with the filmmakers and students of Addis Abeba University how the Hamar keep goats, grow sorghum, collect wild honey and distribute water. Recently, however, life has become harder due to severe drought. Baldambe therefore calls for rain with the help of a blessing.

    Abstract: Acht Jahre nachdem sie als Mädchen mit ihren Eltern (Ethnologen) bei den Hamar in Äthiopien gelebt hat, erinnert sich Kaira Strecker an ihre Erlebnisse zusammen mit ihrer Hamar-Freundin Shawa. Neben Spielen standen Hilfeleistungen für die Hamar-Frauen im Vordergrund: das Mahlen der Sorghum-Hirse, die Zubereitung verschiedener Speisen aus dem Sorghum-Mehl, Wasserholen, Ziegenmelken. Der Film dokumentiert im Wechsel zwischen Originalaufnahmen von 1983 und Interviewszenen von 1991 die Freundschaft zwischen Kaira und Shawa und vermittelt einen Überblick über das Alltagsleben der Frauen und Kinder in Hamar.
    Abstract: Eight years after her stay among the Hamar of Ethiopia together with her parents (anthropologists), Kaira Strecker remembers her life there and the days with her Hamar girl-friend Shawa. Apart from playing, helping the Hamar women was most important: grinding sorghum, preparing various meals from sorghum flour, fetching water, milking the goats. By mixing original shots from 1983 with interview scenes from 1991 the film documents the two girls' friendship and at the same time describes everyday life of women and children in Hamar.

    Abstract: Die Teilnehmer des alle vier Jahre durchgeführten Mittwinterbrauches sammeln sich am 5. Januar in Badgastein zum Umzug. Der Perchtenzug hält vor den Häusern, die Perchten begrüßen die Bewohner durch einen Tanz und erweisen ihnen die Ehre durch eine Verneigung. Nach Segenswünschen des Perchtenhauptmannes zieht die Gruppe weiter. Am Umzug beteiligen sich außer der "schönen" Perchten auch Schreckgestalten, wie der maskierte und pelzbekleidete Klaubauf, aber auch sonstige Brauchsfiguren wie Bärenführer, Hanswurst, Habergeiß, Händler, Schleifersmann, Zapfmandel und andere. An zwei Tagen werden die Häuser der Ortschaften in der Gastein besucht. Am 6. Januar wird das Perchtenlaufen in Bad Hofgastein beendet.
    Abstract: The participants of this midwinter custom, which is carried out every four years, gather in Bad Gastein for the parade on 5 January. The Perchtenlauf procession stops in front of the houses, the Perchten greet the inhabitants with a dance and honour them by bowing. After the Perchten leader has given his good wishes, the group moves on. Other than the "beautiful" Perchten, dreadful figures, such as the "Klaubauf", who is masked and dressed in fur, but also other traditional figures such as the bear leader, "Hanswurst", "Habergeis", the trader, "Schleifersmann", barman, and others also participate in the procession. The houses of the towns in Gastein are visited for two days. The Perchenlauf activities ends in Bad Hofgastein on 6 January.

Als Melodieinstrumente treten noch eine Flöte oder wie hier die Laute Kulcapi hinzu. Silengguri ist ein Stück, das zur Begleitung von Besessenheitstänzen bei altreligiösen Zeremonien gespielt wird.

    Abstract: Die Teilnehmer der Haarwaschzeremonie (vgl. Film E 2963) treffen im Haus ein. Mit dem ersten Tanz werden die Schutz- und Ahnengeister gebeten, am Fest teilzunehmen. Nach dem Geisteranrufungstanz wird das Festessen eingenommen. Adat-Tänze und weitere Geisteranrufungstänze folgen. Nach einem Orakel mit hartgekochtem Ei werden Unterhaltungstänze getanzt. Zum Tanz spielt eine Gendang-Musikgruppe.
    Abstract: The participants of the hair-washing-ceremony arrive in the house. The first dance is performed to invite the protective and the ancestral spirits to take part in the feast. A dance with invocation of the spirits takes place, followed by the meal. Adat dances and further dances with invocation of the spirits are performed. An oracle with a hard-boiled egg is consulted, followed by entertainment dances. The dances are accompanied by a gendang music group.

    Abstract: Die für die Filmaufnahme bestellten sieben Musiker spielen ein bekanntes Stück der zeremoniellen Gondang-Musik, die heute noch, vor allem bei den Ahnen- und Totenfesten, zur Begleitung der Zeremonialtänze erklingt. Die Besetzung besteht aus einer Sarunei (Oboe), dem Trommelspiel Taganing mit fünf Trommeln, der Baßtrommel Gordang sowie vier Gongs (Ogung) und der Aufschlagplatte Hesek-hesek. Somba-somba bedeutet Anbetung, Verehrung (früher des höchsten Gottes der Batak).
    Abstract: The seven musicians chosen for the filmed sequences play a well-known piece of ceremonial Gondang music that is still played today, primarily at festivals for ancestors and the dead, to accompany the ceremonial dances. The instrumentation consists of a "Sarunei" (oboe), the Taganing drum set with five drums, the Gordang bass drum, as well as four gongs (Ogung) , a "Hesek-hesek" striking plate. Somba-somba means adoration, admiration (in former times of the highest god of the Batak).

    Abstract: Das gespielte Blasinstrument besteht aus einem Reishalmsegment und einer Stütze aus einem Blatt der Zuckerpalme oder des Zuckerrohrs. Am oberen Ende des Halms befinden sich 8 Einschnitte in Längsrichtung. Durch leichtes Zusammenstauchen des Halmes werden diese an beiden Enden mit dem Halm verbundenen Lamellen nach außen gebogen und in der Mundhöhle zum Schwingen gebracht, wobei die Tonhöhe in begrenztem Umfang verändert werden kann.
    Abstract: The wind-instrument ole-ole consists of a segment of rice-stalk and a bell made of a sugar palm or sugar-cane leaf. At the upper end of the stalk there are eight longitudinal incisions. By sligthly compressing the stalk, these lamellas, connected at both ends to the rice-stalk, are bent outwards and set vibrating in the oral cavity, producing to a limited degree tones of different pitch.

Die Stücke Gendang dudu pitu kali (Segen siebenmal), Gendang Raja (Gendang für den Raja), Gendang gajah mengiring gajah (Der Gajah [Opferbüffel] führt den Gajah) und Ende-ende juma gulangen (Das Lied von der Bergfarm) werden zur Begleitung der Zeremonialtänze bei Hochzeiten gespielt, das letzte auch bei dem Fest für die Jugend (Pesta muda-mudi).
    Abstract: The eleven musicians chosen for the filmed sequences play four pieces using the Genderang set of instruments that are traditionally used for ceremonial music. It consists of a "Sarunei" (oboe), nine drums, three gongs, a "Pongpong" striking plate and the "Gerantung" gong set with four horizontally suspended iron plates. The "Gedang dudu pitu kalie" (sevenfold blessing) "Gedang Raja" (Gedang for the "Raja"), "Gendang gajah mengiring gajah" (The Gajah [sacrificial buffalo] leads the Gajah) and "Ende-ende juma gulangen" (The Song about the alpine farm) are used to accompany the ceremonial dances at weddings, the last one is also played at the Festival for Youth (Pesta muda-mudi).

    Abstract: In der für die Filmaufnahmen bestellten Aufführung spielt der Musiker und Bauer Berlian Kabeakan aus dem Dorf Petall bei Sukaramai auf der offenen Längsflöte sordam. Die Bambusflöte besitzt vier Grifflöcher. Das der musikalischen Selbstunterhaltung wie Unterhaltung im kleinen Kreis dienende Flötenspiel beruht zum Teil auf Gesangsvorlagen aus dem Volksliedgut der Pakpak.
    Abstract: In a performance ordered for the film the musician and farmer Berlian Kabeakan from Petall village near Sukaramai plays on the open end-blown flute 〈i〉sordam〈/i〉. The bamboo flute has four finger-holes. The music, played for self-entertainment or in a small circle, is partly based on Pakpak folk-songs.

Den Hahneköppern sind dabei die Augen verbunden, ihr Schwert ist stumpf. Sie werden von den Zurufen der Zuschauer geleitet. Dieser für das Bergische Land sehr typische Brauch wird von der örtlichen Bevölkerung sehr unterschiedlich betrachtet.

    Abstract: In der für die Filmaufnahme bestellten Aufführung spielen vier Musiker. Gendang keteng-keteng heißt die Besetzung der zeremoniellen Gendang-Musik der Karo-Batak. Sie besteht aus zwei Röhrenzithern Keteng-keteng aus Bambus mit zwei aus der Haut herausgeschälten Saiten, die mit zwei dünnen Stöckchen angeschlagen werden, sowie einer Porzellanschale oder ähnlichem als Gongersatz. Als Melodieinstrument kommt noch eine Flöte oder die Laute Kulcapi hinzu, hier die offene Längsflöte Surdam. Mari-mari (Komm herbei!) wird bei altreligiösen Zeremonien zur Geisteranrufung bei Besessenheitstänzen gespielt.
    Abstract: Four musicians play in the performance booked for the film take. The instrumentation of the ceremonial Gedang music of the Karo-Batak is called Gedang keteng-keteng. It consists of two tube zithers (Keteng-ketend) made of bamboo with two strings peeled out of the skin, which are beaten with two thin sticks, as well as a porcelain dish or something similar as a replacement for a gong. A flute or the Kulcapi lute is added as melody instrument. In this case the open Surdam long flute. The first piece "Mari-mari" (Come over here!) is played in old religious ceremonies to call the ghosts in possession dances.

    Abstract: Besides the cradle the stile chest is the oldest piece of furniture to be found in farm-houses. Its history can be traced back to the Bronze Age. In the fifties there was a woodworker living at Szuhahuta (North Hungary) who, together with his wife, still knew the old techniques of chest-making. The couple make a stile chest for sale.

    Abstract: Die Einwohner des thüringischen Ortes Hundeshagen, im katholischen Eichsfeld gelegen, spezialisierten sich im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert auf die Wandermusik. Erst 1958 kam dieses Wandergewerbe ganz zum Erliegen. Männer und Frauen spielten auf Märkten und Messen, in Gasthäusern und Cafés und in den Badeorten an Nord- und Ostsee die beliebten Stücke ihrer Zeit. Drei ehemalige Wandermusiker erzählen von ihrem früheren Berufsalltag. Zeitgenössische Fotografien sowie historische Film- und Tonaufzeichnungen ergänzen die Interviews. Nach 35 Jahren besuchen zwei Musiker eines ihrer früheren Reiseziele, die "Fürther Kerwa".
    Abstract: The inhabitants of Thuringian Hundeshagen in the Eichsfeld specialised in travelling music in the late 18th century, and it wasn't until 1958 that this way of life finally came to an end. At markets and trade fairs, in inns and cafés, and in health resorts by the sea, musicians from Hundeshagen, both male and female, played the popular tunes of the time. Three former travelling musicians tell us about their everyday working life. Inserts of contemporary photographs, historical filmrecordings and sound tracks complete the interviews. After 35 years, two musicians visit one of their former destinations, the "Fürther Kerwa".

    Abstract: Am Vormittag bringen Mitglieder der Familie Sembiring an einem heiligen Platz den Ahnen ein Opfer dar. Zwei Frauen stellen den Kontakt zu den Geistern her. Am Nachmittag wird bei der heiligen Quelle - Wohnsitz eines Ahnengeistes - wiederum ein Opfer dargebracht und die rituelle Haarwaschung durchgeführt. Am Abend und in der Nacht werden im Haus die Zeremonialtänze aufgeführt. Im Verlauf des Festes werden wiederholt Frauen von verschiedenen Geistern, die sich am Fest beteiligen, besessen.
    Abstract: In the morning members of the Sembiring family offer a sacrifice to the ancestors in a holy place. Two women enter in relations to the spirits. In the afternoon a further offering is made at the sacred spring - seat of an ancestor spirit - and a ritual hair-washing takes place. In the evening and in the night the ceremonial dances are performed in the house. In the course of the feast women are repeatedly possessed by different spirits taking part in the feast.

    Abstract: A small farmer, who does not own a milking-machine as yet, and his wife are milking their cows by hand. Two different milking-techniques are shown. The fresh milk is strained into 20 litre cans and carried home on bicycles.

    Abstract: Eine hohe Eiche wird gefällt, abgelängt, mit einer Hebelade verladen und zur Stellmacherei gebracht. Der 5 m lange Stamm wird mit Axt und Breitbeil achtkantig behauen und dann mit Hilfe eines handgetriebenen Pumpenbohrgerätes, das auf einer Gleitbahn vor- und zurückrollt, erst von einem, dann vom anderen Ende her gebohrt, bis die Bohrungen sich in der Mitte treffen. Anschließend werden ca. 2 m am oberen Ende für den Pumpenkolben weiter aufgebohrt.
    Abstract: Boring of an oak-trunk to be used as a pump. A high oaktree is felled, cut to length, loaded on a wagon by means of a lever-chest and taken to the cartwrights-yard. The 5 m long trunk is trimmed octogonal with axe and broad-axe and then bored lengthwise by a handdriven boringdevice (machine), which runs forth and back on a guideway. Boring starts from one end to about half the length of the trunk, then from the other end, until both boreholes meet. Finally the upper two metres of the trunk are rebored for the pumppiston.

    Abstract: Die für die Filmaufnahme bestellten fünf Musiker spielen die Stücke "Das Nicken der Tauben" und "Das Klagen der Fische", die auf gesungenen Vorlagen beruhen. Die kleine, heute ausschließlich zur Unterhaltung spielende Instrumentalbesetzung besteht aus dem Xylophon kalondang und der Kernspaltflöte lobat. Auf dem Xylophon mit neun an einer Schnur hängenden Klangplatten spielen zwei Musiker.
    Abstract: Five musicians, engaged for the film, play the pieces "The Nodding of the Doves" and "The Wailing of the Fishes", based on songs. The small orchestra, today playing for entertainment only, consists of the xylophone 〈i〉kalondang〈/i〉 and the flue pipe 〈i〉lobat〈/i〉. The xylophone, made of nine bars suspended by a cord, is played by two musicians.

    Abstract: This is a study of the long-standing question of why modern science arose only in the West and not in the civilizations of Islam and China. The author points out that from the tenth century to the thirteenth the Arabs had the most advanced science in the world. Arab astronomers even invented non-Ptolemaic planetary models that are equivalent to those of Copernicus, yet they failed to develop modern science. While the Chinese underwent a high level of mathematical development during the European High Middle Ages, they generally lagged behind the Arabs in physical theory, optics, astronomy, and experimentation
    Abstract: To explain this outcome the author explores the cultural - religious, legal, philosophical, and institutional - contexts within which science was practiced in Islam. China, and the West. He finds in the history of law and the European cultural revolution of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries major clues as to why the ethos of science arose in the West, permitting the breakthrough to modern science that did not occur elsewhere. This line of inquiry leads to novel ideas about the centrality of the legal concept of corporation which is unique to the West and gave rise to the concepts of neutral space and free inquiry

    Abstract: "In describing and explaining the sexes, medicine and science participated in the delineation of what was "feminine" and what was "masculine" in the Middle Ages. Hildegard of Bingen and Albertus Magnus, among others, writing about gynecology, the human constitution, fetal development, or the naturalistic dimensions of divine Creation, became increasingly interested in issues surrounding reproduction and sexuality. Did women as well as men produce procreative seed? How did the physiology of the sexes influence their healthy states and their susceptibility to disease? Who derived more pleasure from sexual intercourse, men or women?" "The answers to such questions created a network of flexible concepts which did not endorse a single model of male-female relations, but did affect views on the health consequences of sexual abstinence for women and men and on the allocation of responsibility for infertility - problems with much social and religious significance in the Middle Ages. Sometimes at odds with, and sometimes in accord with other forces in medieval society, medicine and natural philosophy helped to construct a set of notions that divided significant portions of the world - from the behavior of animals to the operations of astrological signs - into "masculine" and "feminine." Even cases that seemed to exist outside the definitions of this duality, for example, hermaphrodite features or homosexual behavior, were brought under control by the application of gendered labels, such as "masculine women.""--BOOK JACKET.

    Abstract: Alle fünf Jahre wird in Förste/Nienstedt der "Schüttenhoff" gefeiert, eine südniedersächsische Sonderform des Schützenfestes. An fünf Tagen um Pfingsten finden Umzüge statt. Deren Hauptmerkmal ist das Verteidigen, Erstürmen und Beseitigen der meist von Anliegern oder örtlichen Vereinen errichteten Barrikaden durch drei "Kampfkompanien", die Schützen (Angriff), die Buren (Verteidigung) und die Pioniere (Räumung). Der Film zeigt zwei der fünf Umzüge, den der Männer vom Pfingstsonntag und den der Frauen vom Dienstag darauf.
    Abstract: Every fifth year in Förste/Nienstedt people gather to the "Schüttenhoff" (shooters court), a special form of Schützenfeste (festival with side-shows, including marksmanship) found in southern lower saxony. For five days at Easter processions of three "battalions" take place symbolizing the storming, defence and conquering of barricades erected by inhabitants or local associations. The three "battalions" are the riflemen (responsible for taking the barricade), the farmers (responsible for defending the barricades) and the pioneers (responsible for mopping up). Two of the five processions are shown, men on Whitsun Sunday and women on the following Tuesday.

    Abstract: Alljährlich am Nikolausabend feiern die Borkumer den höchsten Feiertag der Insel, Klaasohm. Jeweils zwei mit Fellmasken vermummte Gestalten in drei Altersklassen und ein als Frau verkleideter Mann, das Wiefke, laufen durch den Ort. Sie besuchen einerseits Alte, Kranke und Kinder, die sie mit speziellem Gebäck (Moppe) beschenken und dringen andererseits in Kneipen und Restaurants ein und jagen auf den Straßen Frauen und Mädchen, die sie mit einem Kuhhorn schlagen.
    Abstract: On Nicholas evening (6.12.) the people of Borkum celebrate the islands most important annual celebration, Klaasohm. A man disguised as a woman ("Wiefke", widow), together with 6 disguised children run through the streets. They visit the old, the infirm and the children bringing as a present a special baked treat ("Moppe"). They also barge into pubs and restaurants and throw out the women and girls.

    Abstract: Nach dem Abbau des Lehms, dem Pressen des Strangs, dem Abschneiden und Trocknen der Kuchen kommen die Ziegelrohlinge in den Ringofen. Im Ringofen läuft das Feuer innerhalb von 8 Tagen einmal rund. In zwei Kammern werden die Rohlinge gesetzt und die gebrannten Ziegeln ausgefahren, in den anderen 12 Kammern vorgewärmt, gebrannt und abgekühlt.
    Abstract: After collecting and extruding the clay, cutting off pieces of the clay column and drying them, the moulded bricks are set in the annular brick-kiln. In the annular brick-kiln the fire circulates once in eight days. The bricks are set in and removed after baking in two chambers, in the other twelve chambers they are heated, baked, and cooled.

    Abstract: Zum traditionellen Bauen im Schwarzwald gehören Schindeldach und Schindelwand. Es sind gewaltige Flächen, die mit einer drei- bis vierfachen sich überlagernden Schindelschicht geschützt werden. Der Film schildert die Herstellung von Holzschindeln. Die Arbeit beginnt damit, daß der Schindelmacher im Wald die geeigneten Bäume aussucht. Gezeigt wird auch die Arbeit des Dachdeckers, der sowohl die ältere Schindelnagelung vorführt wie auch die moderne Preßluftnagelung. Die Handwerker kommentieren selbst ihre Arbeit.
    Abstract: Shingles belong to traditional buildings of the Black Forest. Huge areas of walls and roof are protected with a layer of shingles 3 to 4 deep. The film shows the preparation of wooden shingles, beginning with the work of the shingle maker searching for appropriate trees in the forest. The roofers comment on the traditional and modern methods of nailing shingles.

    Abstract: Gewehrschüsse verkünden den Tod eines Menschen. Während das Grab ausgehoben wird, verabschieden sich die Familienmitglieder von dem Toten, indem sie den Leichnam mit Rotholzpulver einreiben. Vor der eigentlichen Beisetzung finden sich die Läufermasken als Vertreter der Maskengesellschaften ein, um sich von dem Toten zu verabschieden. Nach der Beisetzung - der Tote ruht in einer seitlichen Grube, am Boden des Grabes - beginnen im Grab die Tänze, während dieses wieder mit Erde gefüllt wird. Zum Abschluß der Beisetzung spielt die Militärgesellschaft ihre zum Teil geheimen Instrumente.
    Abstract: Gunshots announce a person's death. While the grave is dug the members of the family take their leave of the deceased by rubbing his body with camwood powder. Before the interment takes place, the running masks arrive as representatives of the mask society to take their leave of the deceased. After the interment - the body rests in a lateral chamber, at the bottom of the grave - dancing begins in the grave while the earth is replaced. At the conclusion of the burial the military society play their secret instruments.

    Abstract: In der Solinger Hofschaft Unnersberg hat sich die 1923 eingerichtete Werkstatt des 87jährigen Einsteckreiders Walter Krebs erhalten. Walter Krebs zeigt die handwerklichen Fertigkeiten und Arbeitstechniken des Einsteckreiders: er montiert Messer, indem er Heft und Klinge durch Einharzen oder Einbleien zusammensteckt und ausrichtet.
    Abstract: At Unnersberg there still exists the workshop, set up in 1923, of the 87-year-old "Einsteckreider" Walter Krebs. Walter Krebs shows the abilities and the working techniques of the "Einsteckreider" fitting knives: After a treatment with resin and lead he fixes the blade in the haft and adjusts the knife. While working he talks about stages in his professional life.

Klotzläufe und Rituale während der Trockenzeit bewirken eine Leistungsstärke für die Gemeinschaft, so daß der Abfall in die bedrohliche Leistungsschwäche während der Regenzeit verhindert werden kann. Geschildert wird der Festzyklus der Trockenzeit.

    Abstract: Auf ihrem Hof im Oberprechtal stellt Frau Schneider den Trachtenkopfschmuck Schäppel her. Während der Arbeit erläutert sie die Hintergründe und Zusammenhänge des Schäppeltragens. Sie erklärt die einzelnen Arbeitsphasen bei der Herstellung und die verwendeten Materialien. Zwei Enkelinnen helfen bei der Arbeit. Auf ihrem Hof im Stockwald bei St. Georgen setzt Frau Wintermantel den Schäppel sachgerecht ihrer zukünftigen Schwiegertochter Martina auf. Zuvor erläutert sie die Funktion der sogenannten Rosenhüte in der Tracht.
    Abstract: Mrs Schneider makes bridal crowns on her farm in Oberprechtal explaining the background and reasons for these traditional crowns, including each phase of work and the materials used. On her farm in Stockwald (close to St. Georgen) Mrs Wintermantel prepares the bridal crown for her future daughter-in-law Martina, and in doing so explains the function of the rose-hat.

Nachdem er sich Cordylinen als rituelle Pflanzen geholt hat, setzt Senemal in seinem Garten eine Anzahl Taro-Stecklinge, die zusammen mit Cordylinen und Steinen zu einer den Geistern gefallenden Komposition werden. Die Taro-Stecklinge werden vor dem Einsetzen rituell behandelt.
    Abstract: Senemal, a man from the village of Banolbil, sets up a ritual taro garden on his planting area near the primary forest in order to cause the spirits to ensure a good taro harvest. After he has obtained dracaenas (cordyline) as ritual plants, Senemal sets a number of taro cuttings in his garden. Together with dracaenas and stones these become a composition that the spirits will like. The taro cuttings are ritually treated before being set.

    Abstract: Auf einem alten Kohlplatz im Kermeter zeigen die Köhler den Aufbau eines Kohlenmeilers, wie er bis in die 70er Jahre üblich war. Zuerst wird der Untergrund, die sog. Meilerplatte, eingeebnet und vermessen. Danach folgt der Aufbau des Rohholzkegels aus zwei Gesetzen und dem Kopf, der schließlich mit dem Meilermantel, einer Laub- und einer Erdschicht, abgedeckt wird.
    Abstract: In an ancient burning-place in the Kermeter charcoal-burners raise a charcoal-pile as it was used up to the seventies. First the base of the pile, the so-called sole, is levelled and measured. Then the cone-shaped stack of wood, composed of two sets and the head, is built up and covered with the jacket, a layer of leaves and a layer of earth.

    Abstract: Zehn- bis zwölfjährige türkische Kinder spielen und tanzen die in Form und Inhalt überlieferten Kindertänze und Tanzspiele ihres Heimatlandes, praktizieren auf dem Schulhof mit ihren deutschen Mitschülerinnen aber auch die derzeitig in Deutschland gängigen Spiele. Vollständig sind zehn türkische Beispiele dokumentiert: ein Abzählvers, Klatschspiele, Tänze im Kreis (z. B. das Plumpsackspiel) und in Reihen sowie eine Wechselrede.
    Abstract: Ten to twelve year old children of Turkish families perform games and dances with handclapping and expressive movements of the body as well as recitations and singing. The repertory is orginally Turkish and is now also practised in Germany - here on the playground of the German primary school attended by the children. The ten examples presented include a counting-out rhyme, three clapping games and two games in circular formation, a circle dance and two dances in line, and alternating reciting. Besides the Turkish elements the examples show the common patterns of children's repertory and its combination of movement with speech or singing. Moreover in the actual performance common elements of European coherence can be distinguished.

    Abstract: Foutura Sib talks with Binaté Kambou about her life as a potter. As a small girl she learned to make pots, to crush potsherds and to knead clay. Later she fetched clay together with other women, she made pots for millet gruel, decorated waterpots. As a married woman she decorated her room with many pots, produced pots for brewing beer and took them to the market after firing. In case of damage a diviner has to be consulted. Now, as an old woman, she produces also sacred pots. Today the claypots have to compete with aluminium-pots and plastic tons.

In Interviews legen sie die Entwicklung des Handwerks und die aktuellen Probleme dar.

    Abstract: Foutura Sib spricht mit Binaté Kambou über ihr Leben als Töpferin. Als kleines Mädchen lernte sie Töpfe machen, Erde zerstoßen und kneten. Später holte sie mit anderen Frauen Ton, fertigte Hirsebreitöpfe in Spiralwulsttechnik, verzierte Wassertöpfe. Als verheiratete Frau richtete sie ihr Zimmer mit zahlreichen Töpfen ein, stellte Bierkochgefäße her und brachte sie nach dem Brennen zum Markt. Geht etwas entzwei, wird der Wahrsager befragt. Jetzt, als alte Frau, stellt sie auch Altartöpfe her. Aluminiumtöpfe und Plastiktonnen stellen heute eine große Konkurrenz dar. Die verschiedenen Gefäße werden in ihrem Gebrauch gezeigt.

    Abstract: Zu Beginn des Verkohlungsprozesses bringen die Köhler das Vorfeuer in den Füllschacht ein, der dann von unten nach oben durchglüht. Zu den üblichen Wartungsarbeiten gehört es, die Rauchlöcher in regelmäßigen Abständen tieferzulegen. Dadurch lenken die Köhler den Schwelbrand gezielt von oben über die Meilerflanken bis zur Basis des Kegels. Wenn der Meiler durchgekohlt ist, räumen die Männer die Kohle abschnittsweise aus. Die Vorgänge im Innern des Meilers werden anhand von Tricksequenzen dargestellt.
    Abstract: To start the process of carbonization the charcoal-burners introduce a fire into the fuel shaft, where combustion then rises from the bottom to the top. Smoke-holes are made in the jacket of the pile, first at the upper part and then, at regular intervals, lower and lower, thus directing carbonization from the top over the flanks to the base of the pile. Once carbonization is achieved, the men remove the charcoal by sectors, turn it over and sprinkle it with water, before putting it in sacks and carting the sacks away. The process inside the pile is represented by trick sequences.

    Abstract: Der Kopist Friedbert Andernach schildert anhand von Hinterglasbildern die Entwicklung und die Hauptmerkmale der Hinterglasmalerei im Schwarzwald. In seiner Werkstatt stellt er anschließend die Kopie eines Hinterglasbildes her. Während der Arbeit erläutert er die einzelnen Arbeitsphasen, die verschiedenen Motive des Bildes und die verwendeten Materialien. Im letzten Abschnitt des Filmes erörtert der Bildsammler François Lotz die Bedeutung der Schwarzwälder Hinterglasbilder im Elsaß.
    Abstract: Friedbert Andernach explains the development of glass working and the major features of Verre églomisé in the Black Forest. In his workshop he shows the various phases, the motives and the materials. François Lotz explains the relevance of the Black Forest glass works in Alsace.

    Abstract: Die Bedeutung des Bollenhutes als originärer Bestandteil der Schwarzwälder Volkstracht sowie in Werbung, Fremdenverkehr und Karikaturen. Die Hutmacherin Hedwig Kaltenbach erläutert während der Arbeit die einzelnen Tätigkeiten und beschreibt die soziale Funktion des Bollenhutes. Der Lehrer Ansgar Barth erörtert die kulturgeschichtlichen Aspekte. Interviews mit Schwarzwälder Bollenhutträgerinnen und einer Touristin sowie mehrere Bildbeispiele werfen Schlaglichter auf dieses Symbol Schwarzwälder Tracht.
    Abstract: The importance of the "Bollenhut" as an original element of the traditional Black Forest costume as well as in advertising, tourism, and caricature. The hat-maker Hedwig Kaltenbach explains, while working, the different operartions and talks about the social funktion of the "Bollenhut". The teacher Ansgar Barth speaks about its cultural history. Interviews with Black Forest women wearing these traditional hats and with a female tourist as well as exemplifying pictures shed a strong light on this symbol of Black Forest costume.

Im Busch unterzieht Ingi als Puta Benge zwei Küken einem Giftorakel, in dem er den Kücken eine Giftlösung, das Benge (Strychnos icaja) einflößt. Das erste Küken überlebt, das zweite stirbt. Damit steht fest, daß die kranke Frau von Yamba nicht sterben wird.
    Abstract: The diviner Ingi is asked by Yamba to question the oracle about the health of his wife Kpatagala. Ingi conducts the poison oracle applying the poisonous Benge (Strychnos icaja) on two chicken. The first chicken survives, the second dies. Now it's obvious that Yambas wife will not die.

    Abstract: Der Tod einer alten Frau veranlaßt dreitägige Beerdigungs- und Reinigungszeremonien in Oku. Nach den Totengesängen der Frauengesellschaft 〈i〉Fimbien〈/i〉 wird der Leichnam im Garten des Hofes beigesetzt. Weitere Tänze und Gesänge auf dem Grab beenden den ersten Tag. Nach dem zweiten Tag, an dem gegessen, getrunken und getanzt wird, ist der dritte Tag rituellen Waschungen der weiblichen Angehörigen und kinderlosen jungen Frauen gewidmet. Er endet mit rituellen Scheinkämpfen der Frauen.
    Abstract: The death of an old woman at Oku is followed by funeral and purification ceremonies occupying three days. After death songs sung by the women's society 〈i〉Fimbien〈/i〉 the corpse is buried in the garden of the homestead. Further singing and dancing upon the grave conclude the first day. The second day is spent in eating, drinking, and dancing, and a ritual washing of the female relatives and the childless married young women takes place on the third day. The day is concluded by ritual sham fights performed by the women.

    Abstract: Science as Public Culture joins a growing number of recent studies examining science as a practical activity in specific social settings. Jan Golinski considers the development of chemistry in Britain from 1760 to 1820, and relates it to the rise and subsequent eclipse of forms of civic life characteristic of the European Enlightenment. Within this framework the careers of prominent chemists like William Cullen, Joseph Black, Joseph Priestley, Thomas Beddoes, and Humphry Davy are interpreted in a new light. The major discoveries of the time, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and the electrical decomposition of water, are set against the background of alternative ways of constructing science as a public enterprise. The book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the relationship between scientific activity and processes of social and political change in a period of great transformations in chemistry and in the conditions of public life.

    Abstract: Der 85jährige Schuhmachermeister Josef Esser zeigt, wie in mehr als 100 Arbeitsschritten ein Schuh von Hand gefertigt wird: Vom Maßnehmen über Erstellen des Schaftmusters, Ausschneiden von Schaft, Brandsohle und Kappen, Herstellen des Pechfadens, Einbinden des Schafts, Ausschneiden von Laufsohle und Absatzflecken bis hin zum Ausputzen von Sohle und Absatz. Nach ca. 15 Arbeitsstunden ist der Schuh fertig. In einem Interview erzählt Josef Esser von seinem beruflichen Werdegang.

In seinem Haus schnitzt er aus diesem Holz ein Gürteltier (dasypodidae). Er benutzt dafür eine Machete und ein Messer. Neben ihm läuft das Alltagsleben weiter.

    Abstract: Am Tag vor Mariä Himmelfahrt (15. August) werden Blumen und Kräuter gesammelt und in Form eines wagenradgroßen Biedermeierstraußes zusammengebunden, um sie am "Kräuterbüschelestag" in der Kirche während des Gottesdienstes weihen zu lassen. Nach dem Kirchgang werden vor dem Rathaus die Kräuterbüschel von einer Kommission begutachtet und prämiert. Der Brauchablauf wird von dem über 80jährigen pensionierten Stadtgärtner Otto Lohmüller geschildert. Er erklärt auch, welche Kräuter in einem Büschel enthalten sein müssen, sowie ihre Funktion in Heilkunst und Volksglauben.
    Abstract: Flowers and herbs are layed out on the day before Assumption day (15. August) in the form of a gigantic cartwheel, later to be blessed during the church service. Afterwards the various presentations are judged by the retired 90 year old town gardener, Otto Lohmüller, who explains which herbs should be represented as well as their function in healing and folklore.

    Abstract: La semana santa en Patamban comienza con la consagración de la palma en el Calvario. El Miércoles Santo se visten determinadas figuras de santos. Durante la noche hay una vigilia sobre todos los santos del pueblo, en la que también participan los Judîos. El lavatorio de los pies el Jueves Santo es seguido por la captura de Jesús, la Cena del Señor para los apóstoles y el encarcelamiento de Jesús. Después del Vía Crucis del Viernes Santo, se leen las últimas palabras de Jesús en la cruz, se baja a Jesús de la cruz y se lleva a cabo la liturgia de la veneración de la cruz. Durante la noche hay una procesión, el entierro de Cristo. El sábado, algunos de los santos implicados en Semana Santa serán llevados a los nuevos cargueros. Por la tarde, una procesión conduce a María al Calvario. La Misa de la Vigilia Pascual se lleva a cabo más tarde. La Semana Santa es organizada y llevada a cabo por los Cabildos, los Judîos y numerosos Cargueros.

    Abstract: Im Wirtshaus trifft sich allwöchentlich ein Freundeskreis alter Männer. Man erinnert sich, erzählt sich Neuigkeiten, gelegentlich auch Witze, man singt zusammen. Der Film stellt eingangs drei Stammtisch-Freunde in ihrem alltäglichen Milieu vor: einen Schreiner, einen Besenbinder (der die fachgerechte Herstellung eines Besens demonstriert), einen ehemaligen Kirchendiener. Ein gebürtiger Ostpreuße schildert seine Akkulturation im Schwarzwald. Am Stammtisch werden Erlebnisse aus Krieg, Gefangenschaft und Alltag ausgetauscht; Einstellungen zu Arbeit, Freizeit- und Feierabendgestaltung und zum Heimatbewußtsein einer Altersgruppe werden deutlich.

The everyday life of three of the friends, a joiner, a broom-maker (who demonstrates how to properly make a broom) and an ex-verger. A born East Prussian explains his integration in the Black Forest. In the pub stories are swapped from the war, POW camps, and normal life. Attitudes towards work, holiday, free time and sense of local consciousness.

    Abstract: Drei Männer demonstrieren auf Wunsch, wie eine Cordyline, für die Eipo eine sakrale Pflanze, am Männerhaus in Dingerkon gepflanzt wird. Bei dem Ritus handelt es sich um eine symbolische Wiederholung des Schöpfungsvorganges. Da die Eipo nicht gewohnt sind, Rituale vorzuführen, überspielen sie ihre Verlegenheit durch Lachen und Albern.
    Abstract: The ritual planting of the sacred Cordyline is enacted by three men. The performance repeats the myth of creation. For the Eipo are not used to perform their rituals they conceal their embarrassment with laughing and simpering.

    Abstract: Die Heilige Woche in Patamban beginnt mit der Palmweihe am Calvario. Am Karmittwoch werden gewisse Heiligenfiguren umgekleidet. In der Nacht wird bei allen Heiligenfiguren des Dorfes eine Nachtwache gehalten, an der auch die Judîos teilnehmen. Der Fußwaschung am Gründonnerstag folgen die Gefangennahme Jesu, das Abendmahl für die Apostel und die Einkerkerung Jesu. Nach dem Kreuzweg am Karfreitag werden die letzten Worte Jesu am Kreuz verlesen, Jesus vom Kreuz genommen und die Liturgie der Kreuzesverehrung gehalten. In der Nacht findet eine Prozession, die Grablegung Christi, statt. Am Samstag werden einige am Osterfest beteiligte Heiligenfiguren zu den neuen Cargueros gebracht. Am Nachmittag führt eine Prozession Maria zum Calvario. Später wird die Osternachtsmesse gehalten. Die Heilige Woche wird von den Cabildos, den Judîos und zahlreichen Cargueros organisiert und durchgeführt.

    Abstract: Nach einer Einführung über die Landschaft und Dorfanlage wird der Alltag skizziert: Dorfschule, Aussaat am Brandrodungsfeld, Sammeln von Naturgummi, Reisschälen, Reisstampfen, Flechten, Schmiedearbeiten in einer Freilandschmiede, Einkauf im Dorfladen, Fischen, Kochen, Kaffeesortieren und Zubereiten von Betelpriem. Nach einem Unterhaltungstanz der Frauen und einem Kriegstanz eines alten Mannes schließt der Film die Vorstellung des Dorfes mit der Abendstimmung am Fluß.
    Abstract: After a general description of the village follows a sketch of everyday life: the village school, sowing in the slash and burn clearings, collection of latex, winnowing rice, weaving, the open-air blacksmith, the village shop, cooking and the preparation of betel. The film closes with an entertainment dance (women), an old man's war dance and the atmospheric sunset at the river.

    Abstract: The holy week in Patamban begins with blessing palms in Calvario. On Passion Wednesday holy statues are redressed and vigil is held, an which the Judîos partake. After Good Friday procession Jesus last words are read. On Saturday the statues are returned to new Cargueros. In the afternoon a procession Maria is brought to Calvario. Later the Easter mass is held. Passion week (Holy week) is organized by the Cabildos, Judîos and many Cargueros.

    Abstract: This study examines "the mechanisms of biological, social and cultural nature linking subsistence, mortality and population, and determining short- and long-term cycles in the latter." The geographical focus is on Europe. "The picture that emerges casts doubt upon the existence of any long-term interrelationship between subsistence or nutritional levels and mortality, showing that the level of the latter was determined more by the epidemiological cycles than by the nutritional level of the population. The permanent potential conflict between food supply and population growth was also mediated by the biological adaptability of the human species to nutritional stress. In the short term the synergy between famine and epidemic infections in determining recurrent mortality crises is evident, but their impact starts declining in frequency and intensity in the eighteenth century."     Abstract: In sieben Orten des West-Harzes finden alljährlich zur Pfingstzeit Gesangswettbewerbe mit gekäfigten Buchfinken statt. Der Film zeigt das Finkenmanöver 1989 in St. Andreasberg sowie Haltung und Wettkampfvorbereitung der Vögel. In ihrem Vereinslokal werden Hohegeißer Finker zu Entstehung und Geschichte des Brauchs sowie den Wandlungen in der Brauchausübung befragt. Mit dem vereinsinternen "Absingen", dem offiziellen Ende der Finkensaison im Juni 1989, endet der Film.
    Abstract: In seven towns of the Western Harz mountains annual finch-singing competitions are held using tame birds. They are around Easter and this film shows the competition from 1989 in St. Andreasberg as well as excerpts from how to keep and train a finch.

    Abstract: Nagybörzsöny/Deutschpilsen liegt nördlich von Budapest und gilt als deutsche Siedlung. Deutsche Bergleute bauten hier seit dem 13. Jh. Gold und Silber ab. Nach Aufgabe des Bergbaus im 18. Jh. und Zerfall der Weinbaukultur im 19. Jh. geriet das Dorf in wirtschaftliche Isolation. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ging der Gebrauch der deutschen Sprache stark zurück. Der Film zeigt Bauten der früheren Weinbaukultur, die Kirchen, die zwei Heimatmuseen, eine Köhlerei im Walde und führt durch Gespräche und Erinnerungen zum Sprachgebrauch und zur Problematik der deutschen Muttersprache. Organisierte Pflege der Tradition wird in Szenen über eine Probe des Frauenchores und der deutschen Tanzgruppe vorgestellt.
    Abstract: Nagybörzsöny/German Pilsen is located the north of Budapest and is considered to be a German settlement. German miners have mined gold and silver there since the 13th century. After mining was abandoned in the 18th century and decline of viniculture in the 19th century, the village fell into economic isolation. After World War II the use of the German language declined. The film shows buildings from the former wine-growing culture, the churches, the two local history museums, a charcoal plant in the forest, and then proceeds to language use and to the problems of the German mother tongue via discussions and reminiscences. Organised cultivation of this tradition is presented in scenes on a rehearsal of the women's choir and of the German dance group.

    Abstract: Die Weberinnen von Ahuiran stellen mit Rückengürtelwebgeräten schwarzblaue Rebozos und weiße Tücher her. Besonders wenn die Ehemänner abwesend sind, sind sie auf den Verdienst aus ihrem Handwerk angewiesen. Die finanzielle Lage der Weberinnen wie auch der Käuferinnen führte dazu, daß statt der Baumwolle immer mehr Acrylwolle benutzt wird. Die Frauen arbeiten oft in Gemeinschaft und unterhalten sich dabei. Sie nehmen die Hilfe ihrer Töchter in Anspruch, die so das Handwerk nach und nach erlernen. Verkauft werden die Rebozos in dem nahen Marktort Paracho.

    Abstract: Der vor zwei Jahren verstorbene Mann Hermanto Juris wird anläßlich eines Totenfestes (Tiwah), das 6 Tage lang andauert, endgültig verabschiedet und in das Totenreich geleitet. Die vom Gewohnheitsrecht (Adat) verbindlich vorgeschriebene Zeremonie wird von 6 Priesterinnen (Wadian) durchgeführt. Am Fest beteiligen sich außer der Familie auch die weitere Verwandtschaft, die Freunde und Bekannte.
    Abstract: A death feast is held in Dorong village. The corpse had been buried two years before, hair and nails of the deceased, called rapu, had been placed separately on top of the coffin. This rapu is now dug up, since the family finally have the means to arrange the feast. In the course of the feast the priestesses of the village, wadiam, communicate with the soul of the deceased until now in a transitional realm. Only after the tiwah is performed does the soul leave for the country of the dead, to join the ancestors and remain there definitely. During the tiwah the rapu is kept in the house of the dead man's daughter. Ritual cock-fights, offerings of pigs and chickens accompany the tiwah. The tiwah is performed according to the adat of the Kaharingan religion.
