Das alte Rom kämpfte ebenso mit Müllproblemen wie die Metropolen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Doch alles verblasst hinter den Abfallbergen der Gegenwart. Anhand der Produktion von und dem Umgang mit Müll schreibt Roman Köster eine erhellende Geschichte unserer Spezies und zeigt, wie sich das Leben mit dem Abfall von der Sesshaftwerdung bis heute verändert. Sein Buch bietet die erste durchgehend schmutzige Geschichte der Menschheit, denn weggeworfen wird immer. In der Vormoderne waren Abfälle vor allem ein praktisches Problem. Sie lagen herum, rochen schlecht und behinderten den Verkehr. Im Zuge des starken und weltweiten Städtewachstums seit dem späten 18. Jahrhundert stieg die Aufmerksamkeit für durch Abfälle erzeugte hygienische Probleme, die die Ausbreitung von Typhus oder Cholera begünstigten. Heute hingegen ist der Müll von einer Frage städtischer Sauberkeit zu einem globalen Umweltproblem geworden. In seiner Globalgeschichte des Mülls von der Frühgeschichte bis heute geht Roman Köster den Ursachen dieser Entwicklungen nach und zeigt, wie sich das Wegwerfen, Entsorgen und Wiederverwerten im Lauf der Geschichte verändert hat. Denn der Müll und der Versuch, ihn zu beseitigen, prägten das Gesicht der Siedlungen und Städte sowie das Leben ihrer Bewohner - von der Steinzeit bis heute. „Müll wird normalerweise als Problem des Konsums betrachtet und viele öffentliche Diskurse drehen sich um Mülltrennung als nachgelagertes Problem.     Abstract: Der Begriff des Widerspruchs umfasst sowohl Akte des Opponierens als auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Er ist somit fester Bestandteil gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Der Band vereint Beiträge zu politischen Karikaturen im 19. Jahrhundert, zum Kommunikationsverhalten von Nutzer:innen in den Sozialen Medien oder den widersprüchlichen Aspekten der Quantentheorie. Der Begriff Widerspruch kann sowohl eine private Unmutsäußerung als auch den rechtlich verankerten Einspruch bezeichnen, aber auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene werden solche Konflikte und Aushandlungsprozesse in Protesten sichtbar, wie jüngst den Anti-Corona-Demonstrationen, oder in Petitionen und Online-Kampagnen, wie #metoo oder #blacklivesmatter. Widersprüche sind feste Bestandteile gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die Autor:innen zeigen die vielen Facetten des Begriffs auf und beleuchten diese hinsichtlich ihrer Potenziale, medialen Ausprägungen und Wirkungsformen.

    Abstract: This book looks at the position of women in the media in capitalism and socialism using ecofeminist lenses. It argues that when the position of women in the media in capitalism is at stake, women suffer from discrimination, structural barriers, lack of recognition and a masculine way of thinking across countries whereas in socialism women did not suffer from the lack of recognition but they did suffer from dual expectations, which placed a burden on them and enabled the return of patriarchal discrimination with the change of regimes and this leads to the notion of masculine thinking that underpinned socialist regimes too.0Whilst it is obvious from existing research, as well as chapters in this book, that socialist regimes had more respect for women, it is clear that they were also underpinned by a masculine thought to an extent, which resulted in a double burden on women in society and this was mirrored by the media.0Therefore, the book argues that the new socialism is needed, the one which will take into consideration patriarchy in all of its elements and include not just policies on equal pay and equal opportunities in the organisation but also has active women?s voices in designing policies that last and that makes an impact on equality in all of its social segments. --

    Abstract: A focus on methods can currently be observed in all subfields of linguistics. Rarely, however, is a perspective taken that integrates these individual sub-areas. The book brings together the current discussion of methods and assembles contributions that move along the spectrum of ethnography, mixed methods, and digital humanities and are framed by method(olog)ic reflections that the contributors have undertaken together
    Abstract: In allen Teilbereichen der Linguistik ist derzeit ein Fokus auf Methoden zu beobachten. Selten wird jedoch eine diese einzelnen Teilbereiche integrierende Perspektive auf Methoden und v.a. auch auf Methodologie eingenommen. Der Band unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund den Versuch, die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Methodik der Linguistik, die sich aus den unterschiedlichen Methodeninnovationen der letzten Jahrzehnte ergaben, zu bündeln. Entwicklungen wie die verstärkte Software- und Datenorientierung, die methodische Vielfalt in Projektkooperationen oder der Trend zu ethnographischen Ansätzen werden in einer Reihe methodisch sehr unterschiedlicher Studien reflektiert. Sie haben jedoch alle gemein, dass sie auf ihre Weise traditionelle Grenzen linguistischer Methodik überschreiten; mögen diese intra- oder interdisziplinärer Natur sein. Rahmende Beiträge betten diese Studien in einen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, der für eine methodologische Reintegration der linguistischen Teildisziplinen plädiert. Insofern will der Band ein Anstoß sein. Einen ersten Versuch einer solchermaßen integrierenden Diskussion dokumentiert der Band mit Respondenzen auf dieses Plädoyer einerseits und andererseits mit zwölf zusammenführenden Thesen zur aktuellen Lage der linguistischen Methodendiskussion

The focus is on visual representations such as drawings, prints, tables, mathematical symbols, photos, data visualizations, mapping processes, and (on a meta-level) visualizations of data extracted from historical sources to visually support the historical research itself. Continuity and ruptures between the past and present use of visual material are presented against the backdrop of the epistemic functions of visual material in science. The function of visual material is defined according to three major epistemic categories: exploration, transformation, and transmission of knowledge.

    Abstract: Seit dem Mord an George Floyd durch den Polizeieingriff in den Vereinigten Staaten im Mai 2020 und der daraus erwachsenen (Social Media-)Bewegung #blacklivesmatter hat auch die Beschäftigung mit den verschiedenen Formen von Rassismus in Deutschland zugenommen. Konnte der Begriff vor wenigen Jahren in wissenschaftlichen wie öffentlichen Diskursen weitgehend nur schwierig oder selten genutzt werden, hat er sich inzwischen hierzulande auch als Gegenbegriff zur globalen Wirkmächtigkeit rechter Ideologien, die besonders Identitätskategorien zur Legitimation mörderischer Gewalt heranziehen, sowie im Kontext globaler Diversifizierungsmaßnahmen im Diskursmainstream durchgesetzt. Dieser Erfolg des Begriffs lässt auch die filmischen Produktionen zu Themen von Menschenfeindlichkeit, die auf Repräsentationskategorien basieren, in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Filme zu Themen des Rassismus versuchen, Aufklärungsarbeit im Sinne anti-rassistischer Praxis zu leisten, während beispielsweise propagandistische Videos rechter und dschihadistischer Kreise zur (re-)produktiven Verhandlung von Rassismus beitragen. Andererseits lassen sich Filme, die scheinbar nichts mit Rassismus zu tun haben, bei einem genaueren analytischen Blick sehr wohl als Verstärkungs-, Reproduktions- oder Verschleierungsakteure von Rassismen verstehen. So sind Filme immer schon im Sinne von (Un-)Sichtbarkeitsmaschinen dazu geeignet, soziale Verhältnisse zu veräußerlichen und so ungedachte Zusammenhänge zu denken. In dieser argumentativen Bi-Perspektivität – Sichtbarwerden der Rassismusdiskurse und Filme als Sichtbarkeitsmedien sozialer Verhältnisse – geht der vorliegende Sammelband Diskursformen des Rassismus, seiner Filmkulturen und Möglichkeiten des (anti-rassistischen) Widerstands besonders/aber nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Kontext nach. Daran schließen sich folgende Fragen an: Wie sieht der Zusammenhang von (fiktionalen) Filmen und Formen des Rassismus in Film-kulturen aus? Wie gehen fiktionale Formate mit Antisemitismus, Rechtsradikalismus, antimuslimischem Rassismus, Antiziganismus und whiteness um? Und wie versuchen aktuelle (auch experimentelle) filmische Formate, Rassismus entgegenzutreten? Im Zentrum des Sammelbandes stehen die Filme und ihre Geschichten selbst. Ziel ist es, das Erkenntnispotential von Filmen in der Auseinandersetzung mit Rassismus zu befragen: Was genau am Rassismus machen die Filme sichtbar? Wie lassen sich mögliche historische Entwicklungen narrativer audiovisueller Diskursformen (für den deutschsprachigen Kontext) darstellen? Wie verändern sich in diesen Entwicklungen die Auseinandersetzungen mit jenen rassistischen Formen? Und grundsätzlich: Wie stehen Film und Rassismus zueinander?     Abstract: Die im Band versammelten Beiträge stellen die Geschichte queerer Lebensentwürfe dar - von ersten Emanzipationsbewegungen um die Jahrhundertwende über Selbstermächtigungsversuche in der Weimarer Republik bis hin zu der Zerstörung queerer Subkulturen unter dem nationalsozialistischen Regime und der fortdauernden Diskriminierung von LGBTIQ-Personen in der Nachkriegszeit. Seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert traten immer mehr Menschen selbstbewusst für die Anerkennung queerer Lebensweisen ein. Diese Pionierinnen bildeten Kollektive, verschafften sich Gehör und stellten dominante Geschlechterkategorien politisch, wissenschaftlich und künstlerisch infrage. In Form von Essays, Interviews und Kunstwerken beleuchten Autorinnen und Künstlerinnen diesen Kampf um Anerkennung, der mit der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten gewaltsam unterbunden, zerstört und an den nach 1945 kaum erinnert wurde.     Abstract: "The rise of industrial capitalism in the nineteenth century forged a new ecological order in North American and Western European states, radically transforming the environment through science and technology in the name of human progress. Far less known are the dramatic environmental changes experienced by Eastern Europe, in many ways a terra incognita for environmental historians and anthropologists. A New Ecological Order explores, from a historical and ethnographic perspective, the role of state planners, bureaucrats, and experts-engineers, agricultural engineers, geographers, biologists, foresters, and architects-as agents of change in the natural world of Eastern Europe from 1870 to the early twenty-first century. Contributors consider territories engulfed by empires, from the Habsburg to the Ottoman to tsarist Russia; territories belonging to disintegrating empires; and countries in the Balkan Peninsula, Central and Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. Together, they follow a rhetoric of "correcting nature," a desire to exploit the natural environment and put its resources to work for the sake of developing the economies and infrastructures of modern states. They reveal an eagerness among newly established nation-states, after centuries of imperial economic and political impositions, to import scientific knowledge and new technologies from Western Europe that would aid in their economic development, and how those imports and ideas about nature ultimately shaped local projects and policies"--

    Abstract: Cold War media cultures are typically remembered in terms of an East-West binary, emphasizing conflict and propaganda. Remapping Cold War Media, however, offers a different perspective on the period, illuminating the extensive connections between media industries and cultures in Europe's Cold War East and their counterparts in the West and Global South. These connections were forged by pragmatic, technological, economic, political, and aesthetic forces; they had multiple, at times conflicting, functions and meanings. And they helped shape the ways in which media circulates today – from film festivals, to satellite networks, to coproductions. Considering film, literature, radio, photography, computer games, and television, Remapping Cold War Media offers a transnational history of postwar media that spans Eastern and Western Europe, the Nordic countries, Cuba, the United States, and beyond.     Abstract: "The recent rampant global problem of the rampant spread of disinformation in and through the digital ecosystem can perhaps be traced directly to the technological changes in the realm of media production, circulation and consumption. As media tools have become commonplace and user-friendly, the utopian dream of critical media scholarship that sought to democratize speech seems closer to reality than ever before. Alongside this process, the simultaneous decline of editorial authority of traditional media organizations has led to the rise of practices such as citizen journalism that have provided checks and balances to fill in the gaps in coverage of dominant top-down media institutions. Additionally, as users have gradually appropriated the available tools of media production, they have done so for various subversive ends including a now thriving global culture of parody, satire and critique (Wasserman 2020; Kumar 2015) using existing genres and formats to challenge dominant media texts, institutions and discourses. Often adopting the format of the very texts they seek to critique, parodic texts such as news reports and analysis don't fit the category of misinformation as they openly reveal their fake nature, even if towards the end."--
