    Abstract: How biodiversity classification, with its ranking of species, has social and political implications as well as implications for the field of information studies. The idea that species live in nature as pure and clear-cut named individuals is a fiction, as scientists well know. According to Robert D. Montoya, classifications are powerful mechanisms and we must better attend to the machinations of power inherent in them, as well as to how the effects of this power proliferate beyond the boundaries of their original intent. We must acknowledge the many ways our classifications are implicated in environmental, ecological, and social justice work-and information specialists must play a role in updating our notions of what it means to classify. In Power of Position, Montoya shows how classifications are systems that relateone entity with other entities, requiring those who construct a system to value an entity's relative importance-by way of its position-within a system of other entities. These practices, says Montoya, are important ways of constituting and exerting power. Classification also has very real-world consequences. An animal classified as protected and endangered, for example, is protected by law. Montoya also discusses the Catalogue of Life, a new kind of composite classification that reconciles many local ("traditional") taxonomies, forming a unified taxonomic backbone structure for organizing biological data. Finally, he shows how the theories of information studies are applicable to realms far beyond those of biological classification

    Abstract: Der Film zeigt das Verhalten einer Mutter zu ihrem etwa einjährigen Sohn Kajepe. Sie herzt ihn, spricht zärtlich zu ihm und duldet, daß Kajepe sie an den Haarsträhnen zieht und ins Gesicht faßt. Zärtliche Gesicht-zu-Gesicht-Interaktionen mit kußartigen Lippenberührungen. Die Kontaktinitiative geht oft von Kajepe aus. Die Mutter stillt und füttert ihn. Zu Beginn neckt sie ihn, indem sie ihm den Zugang zur Brust mit dem Arm verdeckt. Der Säugling nimmt auch Kontakt zu anderen Frauen auf.
    Abstract: The film shows the behaviour of a mother to her approximately one-year-old son Kajepe. She hugs him, speaks affectionately to him, and tolerates Kajepe's pulling on strands of her hair and grasping her face. Affectionate face-to-face interactions with kiss-like lip contacts. Kajepe often demonstrates contact initiative. His mother nurses and feeds him. To begin with, she teases him by covering his access to her breast with her arm. The baby also makes contact to other women.

    Abstract: Auch in Kulturen, in denen Puppen nicht kommerziell hergestellt oder von den Eltern den Kindern angeboten werden, spielen Mädchen gerne mit Puppen. Verschiedene Gegenstände dienen ihnen als Puppenersatz, und oft stellen sie kleine Püppchen selbst her. Der Film stellt Kleinkinder und Mädchen der Himba beim Puppenspiel vor. Die ersten Einstellungen zeigen zwei kleine Mädchen, die eine Sandale als Puppenersatz auf dem Rücken herumtragen. Dann sieht man Mädchen, die Puppen aus Holzstückchen herstellen, sie bekleiden und betreuen. Sie überlassen sie Kleinkindern zum Spielen und helfen dabei, eine Puppe zum Stillen anzulegen.
    Abstract: Even in cultures in which dolls are not commercially manufactured or offered by the children's parents, girls like to play with dolls. Different objects serve as substitutes for dolls, and they often make small dolls themselves. The film presents small Himba children and girls playing with dolls. The first takes show two small girls who are carrying a sandal on their backs as a substitute for a doll. One subsequently sees girls making dolls from pieces of wood; they dress them and care for them. They let small children play with them and help them give the doll their breasts for nursing.

Im weiteren Verlauf wird das Kind unter dem Wehklagen der Gemeinde und Eltern begraben. Ausdrucksstarke Mimik der Trauer und Verzweiflung.

Während Männer das Grab ausheben, trauern Frauen klagend und weinend um den aufgebahrten Toten. Der Tote wird begraben. Ein Holzgerüst schützt seinen Körper vor den über ihn geschichteten Steinen und dem Erdreich. Abzug der Frauen und Männer.

    Abstract: Das Mädchen Molebo war 5 Jahre zuvor ein Kind mit Kontaktschwierigkeiten (s. a. E 2992). Dasselbe Mädchen, inzwischen 11 bis 12 Jahre alt, hilft seinen Eltern und betreut den kleinen Bruder. Molebo hat jetzt auch Freundinnen ihrer Altersgruppe gewonnen und ist oft mit ihnen zusammen, betreut aber auch sehr oft Kleinkinder ihrer Wohngruppe und ist ebenfalls älteren Personen behilflich. Auf diese Weise fördert sie ihre soziale Integration in die Gruppe der Erwachsenen.
    Abstract: The Film shows scenes of the life of the 11-year-old girl Molebo and her behavioural strategies for her social integration into the group of adults in the camp. Molebo helps her parents in the domestic activities and she also helps sitting her little brother Mongoi. Molebo, together with other girls of her age, participates intensively in babysitting of other small children and gives a lot of tenderness. She also jokes with them, hugs them and also kisses them, although the kiss cannot be observed between adult Pygmies. Molebo helps also very old persons like the charismatic Ambije. This film is a document following up the social development of Molebo, who was some years before a low ranking child and frequently served as "whipping child" sensu lato in hierarchic demonstrations from bigger and dominant girls in the group (cp. Film E 2992).

Sie schleudern diese Graspfeile mit der Hand nach dem Spielgegner. Das Auftreffen schmerzt. Die Jungen üben bei diesem Spiel kriegerisches Geschick und die kulturtypischen Formen aggressiver Selbstdarstellung. Ihr Mienenspiel verrät hohes emotionelles Engagement.
    Abstract: In Malingdam, one of the most popular boys' games, the grass dart game, of the Eipo has been taken up. In it two parties fight each other with grass stems that are about as thick as a pencil and up to 60 cm long. They throw these grass darts at their opponents. Being hit is painful. These youths practice their martial skills and the types of aggressive self-portrayal typical for their culture. Their expressions reveal a high degree of emotional commitment.

Es kommt dabei zu Interaktionen von Rivalität, kontrollierter Aggression und Eingreifen der Mutter. Später spielen die beiden allein, wobei auf Distanz aggressive und/oder kämpferische Handlungen mimisch dargestellt werden; besonders tut dies der Junge. (Spiegelaufnahmen)
    Abstract: A little two-year-old boy and his approximately five-year-old sister are playing in front of their hut under the eyes of their mother. During the children's interactions many instances of rivalry and aggressive quarrels about the object with which they are playing can be observed. The little boy acts without any restraint, whereas his elder sister controls her aggressive intentions. There are only a few instances where the mother interferes. Later, both siblings are playing alone. Now we observe their mimic expression of menacing and fighting activities directed towards an imaginery person in "empty space", so to speak.

    Abstract: Nach kurzem Objektkonflikt mit Schlagabtausch beginnen die etwa 4jährige Koumbware und die etwa 18 Monate alte Onguaundjondjose Brennholz in die Hütte zu tragen. Die Mutter von Onguaundjondjose unterbindet das. Koumbware folgt und trägt die eingetragenen Holzstücke wieder hinaus. Onguaundjondjose dagegen trägt unermüdlich hinein, was Koumbware geduldig herausschafft. Daraus entwickelt sich ein Zusammenspiel.
    Abstract: After a brief object conflict with exchange of blows, Koumbware, who is approximately 4 years old, and Onguaundjondjose, who is about 18 months old, begin to carry firewood into the hut. Onguaundjondjose's mother stops this. Koumbware follows him and carries the pieces of wood which have been carried into the hut back out. Onguaundjondjose however tirelessly carries the wood that Koumbware patiently carries out back into the hut. This develops into a kind of game.

    Abstract: Die 1 1/2jährige Libunagawa als Hauptakteurin in liebevollem Bezug zur Mutter und anderen Kindern verschiedenen Geschlechts. Der Film belegt die Kontaktinitiative des kleinen Mädchens und die Freundlichkeit der sozialen Umwelt, welche das Kind aktiv erkundet. Auch beim spielerischen Abschaben von Bananenblattstreifen nimmt es mit seiner sozialen Umwelt Kontakt auf. Die Mutter bleibt die bevorzugte Bezugsperson und sichere Basis, von der aus das Kind exploriert. Ein kurzer Objektkonflikt zeigt, daß Libunagawa sich durchaus auch aggressiv behauptet. Stillakte und zärtliche Interaktionen mit der Mutter unterbrechen die Interaktionen mit anderen.
    Abstract: The 1 1/2-year old Libunagawa as the main character in affectionate regard to her mother and other children of different genders. The film documents the contact initiative of the small girl and the friendliness of her social environment, which the child actively explores. Even when playfully scraping off banana leaf strips, she maintains contact with her social environment. The mother remains the preferred significant other and the safe base from which the child explores. A short object conflict shows that Libunagawa can clearly hold her own in an aggressive situation. Nursing acts and affectionate interaction with her mother interrupt interactions with other people.

Kajepe wird kopfabwärts an den Beinen gehalten und pendelnd geschaukelt. Babysprache. Zuletzt Unterhaltung der nebeneinander sitzenden Eltern Kajepes und neuerliches Spielen des Vaters.

    Abstract: The film documents the social competence of an approximately 3 1/2-year-old girl in different social interactions of friendly and agonal types, above all in combination with an approximately 4-year-old girl. One sees repeated sharing and object conflicts, which are, among other things, provoked in explorative aggression. The extremely expressive appeals of facial expression and gestures, of challenging and of soothing are remarkable.

    Abstract: Der Film zeigt die Beziehung zweier 3jähriger Mädchen, die Strategie ihrer morgendlichen Kontaktaufnahme, die eine deutliche Ambivalenz (Zuwendung und Scheu) erkennen läßt. Aufforderung zum Spiel, Spielgesicht, spielerische Nachahmung. Die Ambivalenz ihrer Beziehung kommt auch in der Verweigerung einer Bitte zum Ausdruck. Das Mädchen Yoto ißt. Metik bittet durch ihr Verhalten, abzugeben, bekommt aber nichts. Yoto zeigt ihr herausfordernd den Bissen, gibt aber nicht ab. Bemerkenswert ist, daß Metik diese Entscheidung respektiert. Sie schmollt allerdings.
    Abstract: The film shows the relationship of two 3-year-old girls, the strategy of their morning contact establishment, which exhibits a clear ambivalence (attraction and timidity). Invitation to play, playful expression, playful imitation. The ambivalence of their relationship is also shown in the denial of a request. One of the girls, Yoto, eats. With her behaviour, Metik pleads for food sharing, but does not get anything. Yoto shows her the bites provocatively but does not give her anything. It is remarkable that Metik accepts this decision. However, she pouts.

    Abstract: Die etwa 4 Jahre Koumbware betreut die 16-18 Monate alte Onguaundjondjose. Sie betätigt sich als Babysitter und tröstet die Kleine geduldig mit großem Engagement. Das Repertoire der Verhaltensweisen des Tröstens ist ausführlich dokumentiert. Später wird ihr ein wenige Monate alter männlicher Säugling kurz zum Liebkosen überreicht. Zuletzt spielt Koumbware mit einer Sandale, die sie wie ein Baby auf ihrem Schoß hält, betätschelt, aber auch kurz bestraft.
    Abstract: Koumbware, who is about 4 years old, cares for the 16-to-18 month-old Onguaundjondjose. She acts as baby-sitter and consoles the little one patiently with great dedication. Her repertoire on consoling behaviour patterns is comprehensively documented. Later a male baby that is only a few months old is given to her for cuddling. Finally, Koumbware plays with a sandal, which she holds on her lap like a baby, caresses it, but also briefly punishes it.

    Abstract: Die Mütter tragen ihre Säuglinge in einem Tragegurt aus Bast oder aus weichgeklopfter Baumrinde auf der linken (Herz-) Seite. Das Kleinkind wird von Anfang an überall mit hingenommen und es wird ihm bei jedem Verlangen die Brust gegeben. Brustgeben beobachtet man auch, wenn Kinder unruhig sind oder bei Manifestationen wie Fremdenfurcht; cf. Beruhigungssaugen. Sehr frühzeitig lernt das Kleinkind neben der Mutter als Hauptbezugsperson auch noch andere Gesichter kennen, sog. Betreuerinnen, die mit ihm schäkern und es herzen und lausen, ihm auch die Brust geben und es küssen.
    Abstract: This film shows social interactions between the mother and her infant as well as behaviour patterns of different other women group members while baby-sitting in a group. The mother carries her infant always in a strap made of bast or softened bark on the left (heart) body side. The infant thus accompanies his mother whereever she goes. The mother always gives suck when the child wants it. Breast offering is also observed when the infant is troublesome or in manifestations like fear of strangers; cf. comfort sucking. Very soon the infant becomes familiar, besides the mother as the main reference person, with many other faces, so-called "female helpers" or "aunts" who joke with him, hug him, even give suck and also kiss him. The kiss cannot be observed between adult Bayaka Pygmies.

Die Tatsache, daß ein Mädchen die Hand einer lausenden Frau kurz wegstößt, um eine Person allein lausen zu können, zeigt, daß nicht nur die Appetenz vorliegt, gelaust zu werden, sondern auch die, jemanden zu lausen.
    Abstract: The film shows social grooming between women and girls of various age and gives insight into the inter-individual interactions during delousing. An elder woman plays an important role in the centre of social interactions. Often somebody is deloused by two persons at the time, which may sometimes result in a small disagreement. For high-ranking persons, which may be quite young girls, a grooming rivalry of the group members concerned may develop. The fact, that a girl pushes the hand of another woman away for several times for delousing a person alone, shows that there exists not only appetence to be deloused, but also an appetence to groom somebody else.

    Abstract: Bei der Festigung sozialer Bindungen spielt das Lausen eine große Rolle. Anfangs lausen sich zwei Mädchen gegenseitig. Ein hinzukommender junger Mann wird kurz gelaust. Danach fordert ein anderer die beiden Mädchen zum Lausen auf, und es entwickelt sich eine längere Interaktion, in deren Verlauf der junge Mann gelaust und gekrault wird. Auch die beiden Mädchen erweisen einander die Gunst, obgleich es leichte Anzeichen einer Rivalität gibt.
    Abstract: The film shows first grooming interactions between two adolescent girls. Then a young man is groomed for a short time. Another adolescent boy shows grooming invitation towards a girl by head-to-head-rubbing and pulling with his hand the hand of one of the girls, resulting in a longer interaction of hetero-sexual grooming. This behaviour plays an important role in becoming familiar with each other during pair formation and serves to fasten and maintain a friendly relationship. In this context, the ritualized form of delousing, the Kraulen (cannot be translated, perhaps as gently fondling the headhair) is of special importance as shown by the example of Mombuka and Mongatschu. It is also demonstrated how moments of tension (or jealousy?) for the favour of the young man can arise between these two girls which may lead to frustration.

    Abstract: Im Zentrum des Geschehens steht ein junger Mann, dessen Vater in einem Kampf getötet wurde. Trauergäste und Angehörige bekunden durch Klagen, Haare- und Bartraufen und Trauerbemalung ihre Anteilnahme. Der laut klagende junge Mann wird umarmt, gestreichelt und betätschelt. Er klammert sich an die Tröstenden und birgt seinen Kopf an deren Brust. Die zentrale Trauergruppe wird von mit Lehm beschmierten Frauen und Männern umschritten.
    Abstract: Pronounced mourning on the loss of a partner and the marked sympathy of other members of the group who are not directly affected by the loss are two of the many universal attributes shared by mankind. To my knowledge there is nothing which corresponds to this in the animal world. Possibly the depression shown by monogamous geese on the loss of a partner is analogous to our mourning. However, the goose does not receive comfort from the other members of the species. It appears to be specific to humans to join in mourning and proffer sympathy.

    Abstract: Injera, das typische Fladenbrot der amharischen Bevölkerung Äthiopiens, wird aus Tef gebacken, einer sehr kleinkörnigen Getreidesorte. Vor dem Backen wird ein Sauerteig hergestellt, den man auf eine Kochplatte gießt und unter Abschluß garen läßt.
    Abstract: Procedures for the preparation of injera, the typical flat bread of the Amharic population in Ethiopia. Injera is made of Tef, a fine-grained sort of local cereals. To prepare injera, a leaven has to be produced first. The dough is poured on a heatened stone-plate, like a pancake, sealed with a cover and needs about 5 minutes baking-time. Injera is a soft, greyish bread with slightly sour taste. The film document was taken in a Weyto-village. The Weytos are Sudanese refugees, who entered Ethiopia during the Mahdi-rebellion in the last century.

    Abstract: From the plane an escarpment wooded with frankincense trees and after that the settlement of Hasik at Khuriya Muriya Bay can be seen. A woman frankincense collector is demonstrating all the different phases of gum collection while collecting gum from frankincense tree. She is using a special scraper and a collecting basket. The special technique used in scraping, the different gum qualities, and the way the gum is stored are presented.

    Abstract: Am Beispiel zweier Zulu-Frauen wird der Geburtsverlauf in Kniestellung gezeigt. Die Geburten finden in einer Hütte statt, einzige Hilfspersonen sind die Schwiegermutter sowie eine Verwandte. Die Kreißende unterstützt das Pressen durch kräftiges Ziehen an einem Strick. Ihr Leib wird mit speziellen kräuterdurchtränkten Grasbüscheln massiert. Im zweiten Beispiel wird eine Spontangeburt gezeigt. Durchschneiden der Nabelschnur mit einem scharfen Grashalm.
    Abstract: Parturition in the kneeling position demonstrated by two Zulu women. The first example is birth in a hut with mother-in-law and one further family member present, where the woman is massaged with herb-saturated grass and the helpers assist the birth by pulling on a rope. The second example involves spontaneous birth. Cutting the umbilical cord with a sharp blade of grass.

    Abstract: To avoid hurting himself by the thorny stem, a Waika man climbs a pijiguao-palm tree by means of a framework consisting of two wooden crosses which he displaces until he reches the fruits at the top of the palm-tree. He passes down the fruits in bunches by means of a liana which is received on the ground by his small son.

    Abstract: Women set young manioc plants, harvest the full-grown tubers, and carry them to the village. There they rasp the tubers, put the mass into pressing bags and, by pulling the bags, free it from its sap containing hydrocyanic acid. From the resulting flour they then make on an iron plate over an unshielded fire big flat cakes and leave them in the sun to dry.

    Abstract: In the highwater time a sagopalm is cut, the trunk is divided in parts and floated to the village. There starch is produced from one of the parts: a section of palm bark is split open by a man, Kapindi, using a steel adze, and then he pounds the fibrous pith using a sago pounder made from hard wood. The washing of the starch from the fibres is done by a woman, Kambanpi, after having erected the washing apparatus with the trough of a sago leaf base and the strainer from the leaf base of coconut palms. The flower sheath of a palm is used for collecting the water containing starch. After the settling the starch is filled into a basket in order to allow that the rest of the water can drip off. The following day, the starch is stored in a big earthen storage pot.

    Abstract: Der Caveur transportiert seine Trüffelsau per Auto in ein trüffelfündiges Gebiet des Périgord. Das locker geführte Schwein lokalisiert eine Fruchtstelle und wird durch Futterbelohnung abgelenkt. Der Caveur gräbt die Trüffeln aus, die später auf dem Markt verkauft werden.
    Abstract: It is a unique feature that since long ago, in the Périgord (Southern France) pigs have been used in search of the subterraneous fruits of truffles. Studies of the literature, inquiries and own observations (film) revealed that a good truffle pig shows a spontaneous preference of truffle odour or truffle taste. In searching the truffles, visual orientation does not play any significant role, and even under a thin layer of snow or sleet a good truffle pig can locate fruiting truffles olfactorily. The smallest amount of subterraneous truffles thus located is only about the size of a grain of maize. Truffles are located from a maximum distance of about 5 m. To prevent the truffle from being eaten by the pig the Caveur offers a food reward and digs out to find himself. Often, however, the pig is diverted by a blow with a stick, so that a partial deconditioning may occur.

    Abstract: In the spring (August) agricultural workers fell a few selected honey palms (Jubaea chilensis (Mol.) Baillon). These then remain lying down until October when the palm sap has matured in the trunk. Then the palm crown is carefully removed, the tip of the trunk is cut open with a sharp knife and then bound together so that it does not burst open in the heat or when dry. A container placed underneath catches the palm sap dripping down. The place where it is cut and the container are covered. The workers collect the palm juice twice a day from their base camp (bodega). The dripping places also have to be cut open every day. In the bodega yard the sap is evaporated until it becomes a syrup, it is sieved and then filled into smaller vats. Twice a week the thickened palm honey is transported by horse or mule to the canning factory down the valley, where it is thinned with sugared water and filled into cans. To protect one of the last remains of the honey palms, the obtaining of honey in the Ocoa valley has been stopped.

    Abstract: An Ica-man cuts the leaves of a big agave-plant and scrapes them on a wooden block with a huge paddle-like stick to free the fibers of their green outer covering. Then he washes the fibers and hangs them over the wall of the village to dry. Later two women take the fibers and twist them slightly together by hand, forming a long continuous yarn, which they twine and ply afterwards with the help of a special instrument called carrumba.

    Abstract: In einem Dorf am Rio Batoví werden Maniokknollen geerntet, abgeschabt, gewaschen, gerieben, mit Hilfe eines Mattensiebes ausgepreßt und in kleinen Ballen getrocknet. Nach Absetzen der Stärke wird der blausäurehaltige Saft abgeschöpft, die Stärkeschicht zerkrümelt und getrocknet. Aus feinem Stärkemehl werden Fladen gebacken.
    Abstract: Manioc tubers are harvested, then scraped off, washed and grated behind the house. The ground mass is squeezed out over a large pot with aid of a sieve and dried in small balls. After the starch has percipitated to the bottom of the pot, the liquid, which contains prussic acid, is ladled off; the layer of starch is crumbled and dried in the sun. Cakes (beijú) are baked from the fine starch-flour.

    Abstract: Shows the process taken by Diongor women in Chad to extract oil from peanuts, which are cultivated and kept in clay granaries. The hulls are removed, the peanuts are finely ground, placed in a pot, and cooked in hot water until oil forms on the surface. The oil is poured off and the remaining hot mass is pressed out on the grindstone.

    Abstract: In einem vorgewärmten Erdofen werden Bananen drei Tage lang gedünstet. Danach werden sie geschält und in einem Trog, mit Gras versetzt, geknetet, um Bananensaft zu gewinnen. Gelegentlich gießt man Wasser hinzu. In Krüge abgefüllt, gärt der Saft nach Hinzufügen von Getreidemehl einige Tage lang. Das fertige Bier wird bei einem festlichen Umtrunk der Männer mit Trinkhalmen genossen.

Includes: cutting down banana bunches; getting the earth oven ready for steaming the fruit; crushing the bananas; and straining the juice and pouring it into earthen jugs. A pitcher of beer is prepared in order to be taken to a festival as a gift, and a few scenes of that festival are shown.

    Abstract: People from the South Indian coast of Travancore use the coconut (Cocos nucifera) in various ways: coconut harvest, opening of nuts and drying of the halves, making copra and coconut oil from the flesh, winning and processing of coir, use of the leafs and the trunk as building material, winning of palm wine and palm vinegar, palm oil utilization.
