Nach Landessitte werden die Vorgänge des Teeaufgießens, des Süßens, der Entnahme von Proben und des genüßlichen Trinkens zweimal wiederholt; ihr Ablauf hat fast zeremoniellen Charakter.
    Abstract: Four Berbers drink together green Chinese tea, which is flavoured with fresh mint. In accordance with the custom of the country the procedure of infusing, sweetening, the sampling and pleasurable drinking is repeated twice; their progress has an almost ceremonial character.

    Abstract: A young woman prepares in a wooden bowl the dough for two loaves from flour, salt and water. With the addition of more flour one half of the dough is formed into an oval flat cake and baked in a flat clay bowl over the open fire. After being turned several times the bread becomes brown in the hot ash; it is then kept warm until consumption under the wooden bowl. The woman carries out the same process with the second half of the dough which has been kept under clothes until then. At the beginning and end of baking the woman washes her hands; all of the containers are cleaned thoroughly with water.

    Abstract: Auf die Innenseite eines Schaffells wird eine Handmühle gelegt. Der obere Mahlstein wird an einem schrägstehenden Stiel um die Holzachse des unteren Steins gedreht. Durch das Achsloch wird Roggen geschüttet, der als Mehl zwischen den Reibflächen hervortritt und auf das Fell fällt. Nach dem Mahlen wird das Mehl gesiebt.
    Abstract: On the inside of a sheep skin a cord, laid in a spiral and on that the conical lower part of a hand mill are set. The upper milling stone is laid on its milling surface. This is turned on a slanting handle around the wooden axle of the lower stone. Grain is poured into the axle opening which then appears as flour between the grinding surfaces and falls onto the skin. After milling the flour is sieved.

    Abstract: Eine ältere Frau färbt ein weißes Wolltuch in Anilinfarbe gelb. Die Reservierungsmuster erhielt sie durch Einbinden von Dattelkernen in den Stoff, den sie anschließend dunkelrot färbt. Nach Waschen und Trocknen werden die Einbindungen gelöst. Im roten Tuch sind rechteckige, gelbe Muster mit unscharfen Rändern entstanden.
    Abstract: An older woman boils aniline dye in water and dyes a white woolen cloth yellow in it. After drying, date stones are bound symmetrically into the material with thin threads. Red dye is then added to the yellow water and the yellow cloth, with its innumerable knots is dyed dark red in this solution. After drying it is washed with soap and cold water. After drying once more, the knots are loosened; the bindings have formed a yellow rectangular pattern with poorly defined edges in the red cloth.

    Abstract: Der Töpfer treibt einen Lehmklumpen über eine angestaubte Kalotte. Nach kurzem Abtrocknen wird der Gefäßteil auf einer Töpferscheibe weiterbearbeitet. Tonwülste werden darübergelegt und miteinander verschmiert. Ehe zwei Henkel aus Tonwülsten aufgesetzt werden, glättet und verziert der Töpfer die von neuem angefeuchtete Oberfläche des Gefäßes mit einem Bambusstäbchen.
    Abstract: The potter drives a lump of clay over a dusty calotte. After a short drying period the part of the receptacle is worked further on the potter's wheel. Clay lumps are placed over this and they are smeared together. Before two handles formed from lumps of clay are set, the potter smooths and decorates the redampened surface of the receptacle with a bamboo stick.

    Abstract: The potter fills the pit furnace with goods to be fired and covers these with clay fragments. He then chops wood stumps to logs and his wife lights the fire. By feeding and sorting of the burning logs with the fire hook he determines himself the temperature. Finally he burns also oakum and kindling on the covering layer. After both fires are burned down he tests the temperature on the outside of the furnance for the last time. Removal of the fired clay goods takes place next day.

    Abstract: The buttering of sour cream takes place in a tube shaped sack, which hangs in a three legged collapsible wooden frame, and is shaken by a woman backwards and forwards. After desouring by addition of water the butter and buttermilk seperate during a rolling movement of the sack.

In diese Form wird Lehm gefüllt, festgestampft und geglättet. Dann schiebt man die Einzelteile der Form von dem soeben fertiggestellten Mauerteil weiter, und der Vorgang beginnt von neuem.
    Abstract: An earth worker shovels clay into baskets. Two bearers bring these over a ladder to a box type form. A fourth worker empties the baskets, throws them down again and stamps the clay fast with his feet and a heavy long handled wooden stamper. After filling, the surface of the clay is smoothed by using a piece of wood. Then the single parts of the box are pushed further. Stern and side boards are placed on cross beams, sounded and held together with cords. Afterwards the filling begins anew.

    Abstract: Ein Mann bereitet aus Mehl, Salz und Wasser Teig für drei Brote. Sein Gehilfe erhitzt drei Steine, um die der Teig gelegt und zu Kugeln geformt wird. Die teils am Feuer, teils auf dem erhitzten Erdboden von innen und von außen gebackenen Brote sind gar, wenn man die eingebackenen Steine klappern hört. Das aufgebrochene Brot wird in Öl getaucht und verzehrt.
    Abstract: After igniting a wood fire the baker prepares the dough for three loaves in a tin bowl from flour, salt, and water. His apprentice maintains the fire and heats three stones around which the dough is placed and formed into balls. The loaves bake partially on the fire, partially on the heated earth and from inside and out. They are finished as soon as one hears the stones rattling when shook. After removal of soiled parts and burned spots the bread is broken open and eaten dipped in oil. At the beginning and end of baking the baker cleans his hands and the bowl with water.

Auf einem Stein am Ufer wird das zusammengefaltete Übergewand anschließend durch Treten gewaschen und abwechselnd mit Lauge und Wasser überschüttet. Im Fluß wird das Kleidungsstück ausgeschwemmt und an der Ufermauer tropfnaß zum Trocknen aufgehängt.
    Abstract: While soap suds are coming to the boil over a wood fire, a man soaks his burnous for a short time in the river. On a stone on the bank the folded article is then washed by alternate treading and pouring of the suds or water. The clothing is then rinsed and hung to dry dripping wet on the river bank wall.

    Abstract: Three men mark on a rectangular beam, five equal parts with cords. They then wedge the piece being worked into a wooden frame in a slanting upright position. In turn they saw in pairs along the lines down to the frame. Depending on the height of the cut they use a plank as a ladder or work standing, sqatting or sitting. After turning the lower part of the beam is sawed. Before seperation of the planks the beam is removed from the frame.

    Abstract: Romaria is a religious festivity celebrated in honour of a saint or of a divine intercessor. Characteristic of romarias is a certain religious attitude, which finds expression in the connection of sacred and profane acts. Most of the romarias are held in summer; that of S. Bartolomew do Mar takes place on August 24th. The substance of this romaria is the offering of chickens in the church as well as the "holy dipping" into the sea. Today both concern but children and pass for a remedy for fear.

    Abstract: Am Tage des hl. Leonhard (6. Nov.) ziehen Wagen, Reiter und kleine Gruppen zu Fuß von Murnau nach der Leonhardskirche Froschhausen, wo eine Feldmesse abgehalten wird. Danach versammeln sich die Teilnehmer vor der Gastwirtschaft; hier treten auch die Goaßlschnalzer mit ihren langen Peitschen in Aktion.
    Abstract: Since 1927 the St. Leonard's pilgrimage in Murnau has taken place, and it is arranged after the known pilgrimage of Bad Tölz. On the day of St. Leonard (6th November) people on carriages, on horses and others walking in small groups are moving from Murnau to the nerby church St. Leonard in Froschhausen where a camp-service is celebrated on a meadow near the church. After the mass the participants meet in front of the only inn of the village and there perform the so-called Goaßlschnalzer (men with long whips).

    Abstract: The pilgrimage to the Bogenberg is an impressive survival of the baroque peregrinatio. The film shows the whole procession from Holzkirchen near Vilshofen, along the Danube to the Bogenberg north-east of Straubing (70 km). On this pilgrimage a 13 m long "candle" is carried along with from the town of Bogen to the church of pilgrimage on top of the Bogenberg. This candle is the trunk of a pine-tree covered with stripes of red wax. The film lays a special emphasis on the documentation of the length of this pilgrimage.

    Abstract: The film records the singing of a Haiduk song from Cîmpu lui Neag, an old shepherd settlement on the Western Jiu. The singer, Saveta Matei, is a woman farmer, 64 years old and has lived in the village since her marriage. The song recorded belongs to the traditional repertoire of the village and is homophone, like all lyrical songs of Roumania. Its melody structure is strophic. The heroic tone and a certain longing are characteristic of this songs.

    Abstract: Maibäume werden vor allem in Oberbayern errichtet, meist weiß-blau (den bayerischen Landesfarben) bemalt und mit Figurengruppen, Handwerkerzeichen usw. geschmückt. Der Film zeigt, wie der Maibaum in Oderding bei Weilheim mit einem Pferdefuhrwerk zur Gastwirtschaft des Ortes gefahren und dort von einer Gruppe jüngerer Männer aufgestellt wird. Der Film dokumentiert nicht nur den Vorgang des Aufstellens, sondern versucht auch Begleiterscheinungen (spielende Kinder, Blaskapelle usw.) zu zeigen, um die Atmosphäre, in der dieser Brauch abläuft, zu skizzieren. Während Maibäume in den Nachbargemeinden seit vielen Jahren errichtet werden, wurde der erste Maibaum in Oderding im Jahre 1965 aufgestellt.
    Abstract: It is mainly in Upper-Bavaria that maypoles are erected. They are mostly painted in white and blue (the regional colours of Bavaria) and decorated with figures and the signs of the various guilds etc. The film shows how the maypole is transported by a horse-pulled trailer to the local inn of Oderding near Weilheim and there erected by a group of young men. Particularly included are the accompanying activities such as playing children, brassband etc. to demonstrate the peculiar atmosphere. While maypoles have been erected in the surrounding communities for many years, the first maypole in Oderding was seen in 1965.

    Abstract: The film shows the death laments in the cementery in the village Priseaca (Olt district). The first part shows the laments of the women before sunrise. The second part shows the lamentations in the morning after the church service. Some lamenting women are shown in several parts of the cementery as well as the more passive participation of some men also present at the morning lamentations.

    Abstract: Eine Tanzgruppe der sächsischen Minderheit (8 Jungen, 8 Mädchen) zeigt vier Paartänze: Ländler, Spinnrad, Tätscher und Walzer. Zum Tanz spielt das Gemeindeorchester (Akkordeon, Flügelhorn, Baßflügelhorn, Klarinette, Schlagzeug).
    Abstract: The film shows four Saxon folk dances (Ländler, country waltz; Spinnradel, spinning wheel; Tätscher, patting dance; Walzer, waltz) from the parish Großau on the Zibin, performed by eight young couples in the yard of the old parish school. The musical accompaniment is given by the parish orchester with accordion, flügel horn, bass flügel horn, clarinet and prercussion instruments.

    Abstract: Das "Begraben" der Fahne erfolgt auf demselben Hügel wie das Aufrichten. Die hochgestellte Fahnenstange wird losgelassen, die Männer laufen auseinander. Beim Aufschlag der Stange kehren sie um und begrüßen sich gegenseitig, als hätten sie sich lange nicht mehr gesehen. Der Brauch endet mit dem Tanz der Kaluscharen.
    Abstract: The film shows the kalushar group coming from the village and climbing up a hill to conclude the traditional Whitsun rites. The cloth and the herbs are taken down from the "flag", distributed among the kalushars, the flag pole is hoisted up, and at a sign from the mutul it is let go. At that moment the men spring apart and run away in various directions. As soon as the pole hits the ground they turn round and greet each other as though they had not seen each other for a long time. The film ends with the subsequent dancing.

    Abstract: The way in which the flute with six finger holes and a mouth on the reverse side is played, as well as the techniques adapted for playing and holding it, are illustrated by an informant from Vaideeni (Sub-Carpathian hill zone in Oltenia), where the film was made.     Abstract: Ein Achtzigjähriger spielt eine Rubatoweise sowie zwei Tanzmelodien und zeigt so die Spieltechnik seines Instrumentes (einfache Melodiepfeife, Grifflochanordnung 7 und 1). Als Experiment ist die Skala der Melodiepfeife wiedergegeben.
    Abstract: The bagpiper from Alunis (sub-Carpathian hill zone of Greater Walachia) plays an instrument typical of this part of the country - a bagpipe with a simple melody pipe and a 7 + 1 finger hole arrangement. From the rather slender repertory of the eighty year-old our film illustrates a rubato tune (Doina) and two dance melodies, thus showing the playing technique characteristic for the instrument. As an experiment the scale of the melody pipe is reproduced.
