    Abstract: In dem Film wird gezeigt, wie eine Männergruppe, vom Dorf herkommend, auf einen Hügel steigt. Die Gruppe, die schweigend anmarschiert, bringt eine etwa 14 m lange Stange, "Fahne" genannt, mit. Die Kaluscharengruppe wird von einer maskierten Gestalt, dem mutul, und drei Musikanten begleitet. Am Hügel angekommen, folgt der Schwur auf die Fahne. Anschließend wird getanzt. Ins Dorf zurückgekommen, kehren sie beim ersten Haus ein und führen ihre Tänze auf dem Hof auf. Der eine Tänzer wird vom mutul "getötet", der anschließend von der Gruppe gezwungen wird, den "Getöteten" wieder zum Leben zu erwecken. Das Spiel, das anscheinend in einem früheren Transitritus wurzelt, endet mit einem gemeinsamen Tanz. Zwei Kaluscharengruppen begegnen sich und führen unter Einhaltung gewisser Zeremonien (Begrüßung, formelhafte Verhandlung usw.) in einem Wettstreit verschiedene Tänze auf. Im letzten Teil des Films wird gezeigt, wie die Kaluscharengruppe, vom Dorf kommend, auf einen Hügel steigt, um die brauchtümlichen Handlungen der Pfingsttage abzuschließen. Von der "Fahne" werden das Tuch und die Kräuter heruntergenommen, unter den Kaluscharen verteilt, die Fahnenstange hochgestellt und auf ein Zeichen des mutuls losgelassen. In dem Augenblick springen die Männer auseinander und laufen in verschiedenen Richtungen weg. Sobald die Stange auf den Boden aufschlägt, kehren sie um und begrüßen sich gegenseitig, als hätten sie sich lange nichte mehr gesehen. Mit anschließendem Tanz endet der Film.
    Abstract: The film shows a group of men coming from the village up a hill. The group, marching silently, is carrying an approximately 14 m long pole, called the "flag". The kalushar group is accompanied by a masked figure, the mutul and three musicians. Having arrived at the hill the oath on the flag follows. Then there is dancing. When they return to the village they enter the first house and perform their dances in the yard. One of the dancers is "killed" by the mutul, who is then forced by the group to reawake the dead man to life. The game, which seems to be rooted in an earlier transit rite, ends with a dance for all. Two kalushar groups meet and perform several dances in a competition while observing certain ceremonies (greeting, formal parley etc.). The last part of the film shows the kalushar group coming from the village and climbing up a hill to conclude the traditional Whitsun rites. The cloth and the herbs are taken down from the "flag", distributed among the kalushars, the flag pole is hoisted up, and at a sign from the mutul it is let go. At that moment the men spring apart and run away in various directions. As soon as the pole hits the ground they turn round and greet each other as though they had not seen each other for a long time. The film ends with the subsequent dancing.

    Abstract: Die Romaria zu Ehren des heiligen Bartholomäus, der als Helfer gegen die "Besessenheit" (Epilepsie, Furcht, Stottern) gilt, findet am 24. August statt. Inhalt dieses Festes sind die Opfergabe von schwarzen Hühnern und das sakrale Tauchen der Kinder im Meer.
    Abstract: Romaria is a religious festivity celebrated in honour of a saint or of a divine intercessor. Characteristic of romarias is a certain religious attitude, which finds expression in the connection of sacred and profane acts. Most of the romarias are held in summer; that of S. Bartolomew do Mar takes place on August 24th. The substance of this romaria is the offering of chickens in the church as well as the "holy dipping" into the sea. Today both concern but children and pass for a remedy for fear.

    Abstract: The film shows sequences of the commemorative festivities in Desa, the last part of a Rumanian national custom carried out in three parts. At Easter it begins with the offering of the sarindar and in September the second part, a water ceremony, takes place. The commemorative festivities end on the 24th and 25th October with a banquet and a mask procession.

    Abstract: The film records the singing of a Haiduk song from Cîmpu lui Neag, an old shepherd settlement on the Western Jiu. The singer, Saveta Matei, is a woman farmer, 64 years old and has lived in the village since her marriage. The song recorded belongs to the traditional repertoire of the village and is homophone, like all lyrical songs of Roumania. Its melody structure is strophic. The heroic tone and a certain longing are characteristic of this songs.

    Abstract: Maibäume werden vor allem in Oberbayern errichtet, meist weiß-blau (den bayerischen Landesfarben) bemalt und mit Figurengruppen, Handwerkerzeichen usw. geschmückt. Der Film zeigt, wie der Maibaum in Oderding bei Weilheim mit einem Pferdefuhrwerk zur Gastwirtschaft des Ortes gefahren und dort von einer Gruppe jüngerer Männer aufgestellt wird. Der Film dokumentiert nicht nur den Vorgang des Aufstellens, sondern versucht auch Begleiterscheinungen (spielende Kinder, Blaskapelle usw.) zu zeigen, um die Atmosphäre, in der dieser Brauch abläuft, zu skizzieren. Während Maibäume in den Nachbargemeinden seit vielen Jahren errichtet werden, wurde der erste Maibaum in Oderding im Jahre 1965 aufgestellt.
    Abstract: It is mainly in Upper-Bavaria that maypoles are erected. They are mostly painted in white and blue (the regional colours of Bavaria) and decorated with figures and the signs of the various guilds etc. The film shows how the maypole is transported by a horse-pulled trailer to the local inn of Oderding near Weilheim and there erected by a group of young men. Particularly included are the accompanying activities such as playing children, brassband etc. to demonstrate the peculiar atmosphere. While maypoles have been erected in the surrounding communities for many years, the first maypole in Oderding was seen in 1965.

Der zweite Besuch im Friedhof erfolgt nach dem Gottesdienst etwa um 11 Uhr. Auf die Gräber werden Blumen, brennende Kerzen und die Totengaben gestellt. Die Zeremonie der kollektiven Totenklage beginnt, wenn die Kirchenglocken ertönen.

The second part shows the lamentations in the morning after the church service.     Abstract: The film shows the dance Sîrba (Serbian dance) from the village Vestem (Sibiu district). It is danced in a semi-circle, only by men, who hold each other by the shoulders. The movement is alternately from left to right and on the spot. The tempo is quicker. A clarinetist accompanies the dance.

The manufacture proceeds in the following stages: making the tube, the mouthpiece, and the holes; mounting sheet-brass and decorating; finishing touches. Dann setzt sie sich nieder und beweint den Tod der jungen Frau in einem langen, lyrischen, frei erfundenen, monologartigen Klagelied. An anderen Gräbern halten sich auch Frauen auf, die klagen oder Speisen und Gaben austeilen.
    Abstract: A 68-year-old woman enters the cemetery at six o'clock in the morning. She circumambulates the grave of her daughter and incenses it. Then she sits down and laments the death of the young woman in a long lyrical, monologue-like extempore mourning song. There are also women at other graves, lamenting or depositing food and gifts.

    Abstract: The film shows four Saxon folk dances (Ländler, country waltz; Spinnradel, spinning wheel; Tätscher, patting dance; Walzer, waltz) from the parish Großau on the Zibin, performed by eight young couples in the yard of the old parish school. The musical accompaniment is given by the parish orchester with accordion, flügel horn, bass flügel horn, clarinet and prercussion instruments.

    Abstract: Das "Begraben" der Fahne erfolgt auf demselben Hügel wie das Aufrichten. Die hochgestellte Fahnenstange wird losgelassen, die Männer laufen auseinander. Beim Aufschlag der Stange kehren sie um und begrüßen sich gegenseitig, als hätten sie sich lange nicht mehr gesehen. Der Brauch endet mit dem Tanz der Kaluscharen.
    Abstract: The film shows the kalushar group coming from the village and climbing up a hill to conclude the traditional Whitsun rites. The cloth and the herbs are taken down from the "flag", distributed among the kalushars, the flag pole is hoisted up, and at a sign from the mutul it is let go. At that moment the men spring apart and run away in various directions. As soon as the pole hits the ground they turn round and greet each other as though they had not seen each other for a long time. The film ends with the subsequent dancing.

    Abstract: Ein Achtzigjähriger spielt eine Rubatoweise sowie zwei Tanzmelodien und zeigt so die Spieltechnik seines Instrumentes (einfache Melodiepfeife, Grifflochanordnung 7 und 1). Als Experiment ist die Skala der Melodiepfeife wiedergegeben.
    Abstract: The bagpiper from Alunis (sub-Carpathian hill zone of Greater Walachia) plays an instrument typical of this part of the country - a bagpipe with a simple melody pipe and a 7 + 1 finger hole arrangement. From the rather slender repertory of the eighty year-old our film illustrates a rubato tune (Doina) and two dance melodies, thus showing the playing technique characteristic for the instrument. As an experiment the scale of the melody pipe is reproduced.

    Abstract: The way in which the flute with six finger holes and a mouth on the reverse side is played, as well as the techniques adapted for playing and holding it, are illustrated by an informant from Vaideeni (Sub-Carpathian hill zone in Oltenia), where the film was made. He performs one tune in tempo rubato and two dance tunes with the characteristic guttural sound. A recording was also made of the tune in tempo rubato without the guttural sound.

    Abstract: Am Samstag vor Invokavit wird am Berg der Holzstoß aufgeschichtet sowie das Rad ausgestopft. Sonntagabend nach einem Gebet und dreimaligem Umschreiten wird der Holzstoß angezündet. Im Feuer werden die Holzscheiben zum Glühen gebracht und, von einem Spruch begleitet, mit Hilfe einer Rute in Richtung des Dorfes geschleudert. Das mit Stroh ausgestopfte Rad wird angezündet und den Hang hinuntergerollt. Anschließend Heischegang. Brauchträger sind junge Burschen.
    Abstract: On Saturday before Invocavit the lads prepare the bonfire and stuff the wheel with straw. On Sunday evening, after a prayer, they walk round the bonfire three times, then set light to it. Wooden discs are put into the fire until they glow. Then, accompanied with a saying, they are thrown down with the help of a stick in the direction of the village. The wheel stuffed with straw is set on fire and rolled down the hillside. Afterwards gift asking procession.

Das so vorgegebene Muster wird in der Sprengtechnik mit Goldfaden überstickt. Die fertige Stickerei (ein schwarzes Samtmieder) wird auf der Unterseite mit dem Hammer geklopft und mit Stärke gesteift.
    Abstract: A woman transfers a design to a piece of pasteboard and pricks it out with a punch. The fabric is then mounted into a frame and the pasteboard pattern on to it. The design is embroidered with gold thread in couching or laid work. The finished embroi-dery (a black velvet bodice) is beaten with a hammer on the reverse side and stiffened with starch.

    Abstract: According to ancient Christian use the bells are not rung the last days of Holy Week. Assuming the function of the bells, the Rätschebuben (rattling boys) at Ebnet pass through the streets rattling before each mass, in order to call the population to church. As a reward for their rattling and for their serving as an altar boy the boys receive gifts on a procession, at which they recite certain verses.

    Abstract: Der Tanz wird in der Fasnachtzeit von 12 Mädchen um einen geschmückten Baum, an dem unterhalb der Krone lange Bänder angebracht sind, aufgeführt. Während des Tanzes werden die in den Händen gehaltenen roten und weißen Bänder im Flechtmuster um den Baumstamm gewunden und wieder abgewickelt.
    Abstract: The "Bändeltanz" is performed at prelenten carnival time. The female dancers from a circle around a decorated pole, to which long ribbons have been attached just below the crown. Every dancer holds the end of a ribbon in her hand. The dancers move around the pole in time to the music. At the same time, pairs of them turn around each other. By this means the ribbons are later unrolled.

    Abstract: The "Straw-man", disguised completely in straw, plays a special role in the Leipferdingen shrovetide. First the dressing of the "Straw-man" is shown in the film. Then he is led along in the procession. On Shrove-Tuesday an imitation of the "Straw-man", a straw dummy, is burned on the market place.

    Abstract: Ein 13jähriger Bub wird mit Strohzöpfen eingeflochten, mit einer gelben Stofflarve verhüllt und mit Schellenriemen, Tschako, Säbel und Schwanzglocke versehen. Zusammen mit sieben Begleitern geht er von Haus zu Haus. Es werden Sprüche aufgesagt und Eier, Butter und Milch gesammelt. Am Abend des Tages verzehren die Buben gemeinsam die gesammelten Lebensmittel.
    Abstract: A schoolboy from an upper grade is wrapped up in ropes made of straw. Together with seven companios he goes from house to house. Sayings are recited and eggs, butter and mik are collected. On the same evening the boys consume the food together.

    Abstract: Der Fronleichnamstag wird um fünf Uhr in der Frühe mit dem sog. Weckruf eingeleitet. Zu dieser Zeit werden schon die im Freien aufgestellten Altäre geschmückt und Blumenteppiche gelegt. Nach der Frühmesse folgt die Prozession, die auf einem bestimmten Weg von der Kirche ausgehend von Altar zu Altar zur Kirche zurückkehrt.
    Abstract: Corpus Christi day opens at five a.m. with the so-called "walking-call". Still early in the morning, the altars which have been set up out doors are decorated, and carpets of flowers are laid. After early mass comes the procession, which proceeds upon a pre-determined route, starting at the church and going from altar to altar, finally returning to the church.
