    Abstract: This book studies how documentaries, and factual media in general, can contribute to the reduction of social stigma and prejudice. It adopts models from social psychology, media studies and cultural studies and is intended for scholars and media makers who aim to increase social inclusion and diversity by deconstructing harmful boundaries between social groups. Such boundaries may be based on the stereotyping of ethnicity, culture, age, dis/ability, gender and sexual orientation, for example. The first part of the book outlines the functionality of stereotypes as essential processes for social cognition both in real life and during documentary viewing. The second part establishes a classification system for stigmatising media stereotypes and formulates a methodology based on critical discourse analysis to analyse them in narrative and audio-visual representations. The third and final part of the book conceptualises a set of methodologies to reduce stigmatising stereotypes. These methodologies are based on 1) representations that prompt perspectival alignment with screen characters, and 2) the perceived salience of multiple, intersecting social identities. Catalin Brylla is Principal Lecturer in Film and TV at Bournemouth University, UK, where he is Deputy Director of the Centre for the Study of Conflict, Emotion and Social Justice. He also chairs the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image, and he has co-edited Documentary and Disability (2017) and Cognitive Theory and Documentary Film (2018).

Ghosh trains her analytic gaze on these mediations as expressed in the collection and analysis of blood samples as a form of viral media; the geospatialization of data that track viral hosts like wild primates; and the use of multisensory images to trace fluctuations in viral mutations. Studying how epidemic media inscribe, store, and transmit multispecies relations attunes us to the anthropogenic drivers of pathogenicity like deforestation or illegal wildlife trading and the vulnerabilities of diseases that arise from socioeconomic inequities and biopolitical neglect"--

Once considered a national treasure, the athlete was accused of brutally slaying his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman on June 12, 1994. Within days, the media and public developed an unprecedented obsession with the story, turning a murder investigation and trial into a sensationalized reality show. Tatjana Neubauer examines the mediatization, deliberate manipulation, and the simplification of popular criminal trials for profit on television.     Abstract: With its new media possibilities, film at the beginning of the 20th century brought increased intensity to the perception of body representations. It now showed the body in an aesthetic tension of authenticity, alienation, fetishization and ephemerality and at the same time created media and aesthetic constellations which combined numerous (theoretical) considerations and artistic articulations of a crisis-ridden modernity Visions of a new man – especially a new woman – were omnipresent. Using a broad spectrum of cinematic artefacts and historical materials, the book examines the first decade of narrative cinema, 1908-1918 in the late Tsarist Empire, how cinema specifically modeled cinematic concepts of physicality and thus significantly the idea of ​​the human being in Russian modernity, a cultural culture characterized by transmediality Epoch, co-designed. Accordingly, in the study, practices from theater and dance as well as cultural, artistic and literary discourses, such as from the avant-garde or symbolism, are intertwined with developments in film aesthetics and film theory
    Abstract: Mit seinen neuen medialen Möglichkeiten brachte der Film zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine gesteigerte Intensität in die Wahrnehmung von Körperrepräsentationen. Er zeigte den Körper nun in einer ästhetischen Spannung von Authentizität, Verfremdung, Fetischisierung und Flüchtigkeit und schuf zugleich mediale und ästhetische Konstellationen, an die sich zahlreiche (theoretische) Überlegungen und künstlerische Artikulationen einer krisenhaften Moderne banden. Visionen von einem Neuen Menschen – insbesondere einer Neuen Frau – waren allgegenwärtig. Anhand eines breiten Spektrums filmischer Artefakte und historischer Materialien untersucht das Buch zur ersten Dekade des Erzählkinos, 1908-1918 im ausgehenden Zarenreich, wie das Kino spezifisch filmische Konzepte von Körperlichkeit modellierte und somit maßgeblich die Vorstellung vom Menschen in der russischen Moderne, einer transmedial geprägten kulturellen Epoche, mitgestaltete.     Abstract: Seit dem Mord an George Floyd durch den Polizeieingriff in den Vereinigten Staaten im Mai 2020 und der daraus erwachsenen (Social Media-)Bewegung #blacklivesmatter hat auch die Beschäftigung mit den verschiedenen Formen von Rassismus in Deutschland zugenommen. Konnte der Begriff vor wenigen Jahren in wissenschaftlichen wie öffentlichen Diskursen weitgehend nur schwierig oder selten genutzt werden, hat er sich inzwischen hierzulande auch als Gegenbegriff zur globalen Wirkmächtigkeit rechter Ideologien, die besonders Identitätskategorien zur Legitimation mörderischer Gewalt heranziehen, sowie im Kontext globaler Diversifizierungsmaßnahmen im Diskursmainstream durchgesetzt. Dieser Erfolg des Begriffs lässt auch die filmischen Produktionen zu Themen von Menschenfeindlichkeit, die auf Repräsentationskategorien basieren, in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Filme zu Themen des Rassismus versuchen, Aufklärungsarbeit im Sinne anti-rassistischer Praxis zu leisten, während beispielsweise propagandistische Videos rechter und dschihadistischer Kreise zur (re-)produktiven Verhandlung von Rassismus beitragen. Andererseits lassen sich Filme, die scheinbar nichts mit Rassismus zu tun haben, bei einem genaueren analytischen Blick sehr wohl als Verstärkungs-, Reproduktions- oder Verschleierungsakteure von Rassismen verstehen. So sind Filme immer schon im Sinne von (Un-)Sichtbarkeitsmaschinen dazu geeignet, soziale Verhältnisse zu veräußerlichen und so ungedachte Zusammenhänge zu denken. In dieser argumentativen Bi-Perspektivität – Sichtbarwerden der Rassismusdiskurse und Filme als Sichtbarkeitsmedien sozialer Verhältnisse – geht der vorliegende Sammelband Diskursformen des Rassismus, seiner Filmkulturen und Möglichkeiten des (anti-rassistischen) Widerstands besonders/aber nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Kontext nach. Daran schließen sich folgende Fragen an: Wie sieht der Zusammenhang von (fiktionalen) Filmen und Formen des Rassismus in Film-kulturen aus? Wie gehen fiktionale Formate mit Antisemitismus, Rechtsradikalismus, antimuslimischem Rassismus, Antiziganismus und whiteness um? Und wie versuchen aktuelle (auch experimentelle) filmische Formate, Rassismus entgegenzutreten? Im Zentrum des Sammelbandes stehen die Filme und ihre Geschichten selbst. Ziel ist es, das Erkenntnispotential von Filmen in der Auseinandersetzung mit Rassismus zu befragen: Was genau am Rassismus machen die Filme sichtbar? Wie lassen sich mögliche historische Entwicklungen narrativer audiovisueller Diskursformen (für den deutschsprachigen Kontext) darstellen? Wie verändern sich in diesen Entwicklungen die Auseinandersetzungen mit jenen rassistischen Formen? Und grundsätzlich: Wie stehen Film und Rassismus zueinander?     Abstract: Neo-Victorian Things: Re-Imagining Nineteenth-Century Material Cultures in Literature and Film is the first volume to focus solely on the replication, reconstruction, and re-presentation of Victorian things. It investigates the role of materiality in contemporary returns to the past as a means of assessing the function of things in remembering, revisioning, and/or reimagining the nineteenth century. Examining iterations of material culture in literature, film and popular television series, this volume offers a reconsideration of nineteenth-century things and the neo-Victorian cultural forms that they have inspired, animated, and even haunted. By turning to new and relatively underexplored strands of neo-Victorian materiality—including opium paraphernalia, slave ships, clothing, and biographical objects—and interrogating the critical role such objects play in reconstructing the past, this volume offers ways of thinking about how mis/apprehensions of material culture in the nineteenth century continue to shape our present understanding of things.

    Abstract: The work in media cultural history is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. In it, bodies, desires and identities are constantly remodelled through the formation of difference. Therefore, male queerness here does not mean the representation of male homosexuality. Rather, it is the dynamic result of complex medial processes, in connection with affects and (self-)cognitions on and off screen. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition Performative Figuren queerer Männlichkeit by Christiane König, published by J.B.Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020.     Abstract: Gestaltungsweisen des Spielfilms werden danach befragt, welche ästhetische Funktion ihnen im Erlebensprozess des Zuschauers zukommen mag und wie man diese aus der Perspektive der Psychologie objektivierbar machen kann. Künstlerische Verfahren mit ihren differenzierten gestalterischen Lösungen im Bereich des Erzählens, der Konfliktdarstellung, Kameraführung und Montage, doch auch im Hinblick auf Medienspezifik, Stil und Genre, erfahren hierbei eine psychologische Interpretation, was zu Hypothesen hinführt, die eine empirische Erforschung der kognitiven, emotiven und imaginativen Wirkungsdimension des Films gestatten. Da bei dieser transdisziplinären Untersuchung, die sich explizit dem künstlerischen Ausdruckspotenzial des Mediums stellt, stets von einer Betrachtung konkreter Werke ausgegangen wird, ergeben sich für den Filminteressierten neben psychologisch fundierten Erklärungen zur Funktion bewährter Darstellungsweisen zahlreiche Einblicke in die Wirkungsstrategien innovativer Ausdrucksformen, die sich bisher der Analyse entzogen. Besonders gilt dies für künstlerische Verfahren, die seit Anbruch der Kino-Moderne vom europäischen Autorenfilm zur Anwendung gebracht werden und wichtige Erlebnisgehalte unterhalb der Bewusstheitsschwelle vermitteln bzw. Emotionen und Vorstellungen des Publikums auf neuartige Weise beeinflussen. Der Autor Dr. sc. Peter Wuss ist Professor emeritus der Filmuniversität Babelsberg Konrad Wolf. Er schrieb zahlreiche Fachaufsätze zur Ästhetik, Geschichte und Psychologie des Films und fünf Bücher, darunter Die Tiefenstruktur des Filmkunstwerks (1986; 1990), Filmanalyse und Psychologie (1993; 1990) sowie Cinematic Narration and its Psychological Impact: Functions of Cognition, Emotion and Play (2009). .

    Abstract: In Virtual Pedophilia Gillian Harkins traces how by the end of the twentieth century the pedophile as a social outcast evolved into its contemporary appearance as a virtually normal white male. The pedophile's alleged racial and gender normativity was treated as an exception to dominant racialized modes of criminal or diagnostic profiling. The pedophile was instead profiled as a virtual figure, a potential threat made visible only when information was transformed into predictive image. The virtual pedophile was everywhere and nowhere, slipping through day-to-day life undetected until people learned how to arm themselves with the right combination of visually predictive information. Drawing on television, movies, and documentaries such as Law and Order: SVU, To Catch a Predator, Mystic River, and Capturing the Friedmans, Harkins shows how diverse U.S. audiences have been conscripted and trained to be lay detectives who should always be on the lookout for the pedophile as virtual predator. In this way, the perceived threat of the pedophile legitimated increased surveillance and ramped-up legal strictures that expanded the security apparatus of the carceral state

    Abstract: Without question, the East German National People's Army was a profoundly masculine institution that emphasized traditional ideals of stoicism, sacrifice, and physical courage. Nonetheless, as this innovative study demonstrates, depictions of the military in the film and literature of the GDR were far more nuanced and ambivalent. Departing from past studies that have found in such portrayals an unchanging, idealized masculinity, Comrades in Arms shows how cultural works both before and after reunification place violence, physical vulnerability, and military theatricality, as well as conscripts' powerful emotions and desires, at the center of soldiers' lives and the military institution itself.

    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Cinema offers an overview of the current state of thinking around Canadian cinema. The volume was conceived to register the variety of voices expressing themselves within Canadian cinema with special attention paid to Indigenous, Quebecois, and diasporic identities. Canadian cinema increasingly finds its place within a broad conception of "screen cultures", which extend into the divergent realms of small-scale artistic experimentation and large-scale public spectacle. Insofar as these realms have played a vital role in establishing Canada's presence within international screen culture, they are given special emphasis here. The epistemology reconstructs the problems that the machines' designers and users have strived to solve, and the network of concepts they have elaborated to understand these problems. Drawing on the philosophy of technology and anthropology, 'Inventing Cinema' argues that networks of gestures, problems, perception and concepts are inscribed in vision machines, from the camera obscura to the stereoscope, the Cinématographe, and digital cinema. The invention of cinema is ultimately seen as an ongoing process irreducible to a single moment in history

    Abstract: "Race and Cultural Practice in Popular Culture is an innovative work in which contributors freshly approach the concept of race as a social factor made concrete in popular forms, such as film, television, and music. They collectively push past the reaffirmation of static conceptions of identity, authenticity, or conventional interpretations of stereotypes and bridge the intertextual gap between theories of community enactment and cultural representation. The book also draws together and melds otherwise isolated academic theories and methodologies (case studies, critical readings, and ethnographies, for example) in order to focus on race as an ideological reality and a process that continues to impact lives despite allegations that we live in a post-racial America. The collection is separated into three parts: Visualizing Race (Representational Media), Sounding Race (Soundscape), and Racialization in Place (Theory), each of which takes into account visual, audio, and geographic sites of racial representations respectively. Popular culture forms examined include TV shows such as Orange is the New Black and Breaking Bad, artists such as Shakira and Nicki Minaj, and more"--

    Abstract: "Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has served as a major platform for political performance, social justice activism, and large-scale public debates over race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and nationality. It has empowered minoritarian groups to organize protests, articulate often-underrepresented perspectives, and form community. It has also spread hashtags that have been used to bully and silence women, people of color, and LGBTQ people. #identity is among the first scholarly books to address the positive and negative effects of Twitter on our contemporary world. Hailing from diverse scholarly fields, all contributors are affiliated with The Color of New Media, a scholarly collective based at the University of California, Berkeley. The Color of New Media explores the intersections of new media studies, critical race theory, gender and women's studies, and postcolonial studies. The essays in #identity consider topics such as the social justice movements organized through #BlackLivesMatter, #Ferguson, and #SayHerName; the controversies around #WhyIStayed and #CancelColbert; Twitter use in India and Africa; the integration of hashtags such as #nohomo and #onfleek that have become part of everyday online vernacular; and other ways in which Twitter has been used by, for, and against women, people of color, LGBTQ, and Global South communities.     Abstract: Die vorliegende Studie untersucht, welche Rolle Massenmedien in der politischen Transformation im Irak nach 2003 gespielt haben. Dabei diskutiert Anja Wollenberg zunächst, ob und in welcher Weise politischer Wettbewerb, Partizipation, Kritik und Kontrolle von irakischen Rundfunkmedien ermöglicht und mobilisiert wurden. Die Untersuchung von klassisch-demokratischen Kernfunktionen wird erweitert um die Frage nach den spezifischen Merkmalen von Öffentlichkeit im Kontext von fragiler Staatlichkeit. Das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Stabilisierung und Demokratisierung sowie die Überlagerung alter und neuer Verhaltensmuster in der journalistischen Praxis rücken damit in den Fokus der Untersuchung. Die einzelnen Filmtheorien werden in chronologischer Reihenfolge vorgestellt, wobei ihre Hauptthesen, ihr Argumentationsaufbau wie auch ihre wechselseitigen Einflüsse und Abgrenzungen rekonstruiert werden. Inwiefern diese Ansätze dazu dienen können, das Verständnis von Filmen zu vertiefen, wird an konkreten Filmbeispielen gezeigt. Ein weiterer roter Faden innerhalb des Buchs ist der Vergleich mit Theorieangeboten aus der Bildtheorie und der philosophischen Ästhetik. Damit werden die jeweiligen Theoretiker in einen umfassenderen geistesgeschichtlichen Traditionsrahmen eingeordnet

    Abstract: In recent years, anthropologists, historians, and others have been drawn to study the profuse and creative usages of digital media by religious movements. At the same time, scholars of Christian Africa have long been concerned with the history of textual culture, the politics of Bible translation, and the status of the vernacular in Christianity. Students of Islam in Africa have similarly examined politics of knowledge, the transmission of learning in written form, and the influence of new media. Until now, however, these arenas--Christianity and Islam, digital media and "old" media--have been studied separately. Religion, Media, and Marginality in Modern Africa is one of the first volumes to put new media and old media into significant conversation with one another, and also offers a rare comparison between Christianity and Islam in Africa. The contributors find many previously unacknowledged correspondences among different media and between the two faiths. In the process they challenge the technological determinism--the notion that certain types of media generate particular forms of religious expression--that haunts many studies. In evaluating how media usage and religious commitment intersect in the social, cultural, and political landscapes of modern Africa, this collection will contribute to the development of new paradigms for media and religious studies.--Publisher's summary
