    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: This open access book presents a condensed history of Sociology in Mexico from its origins, through to the middle of the 19th century and up to the present day. The book analyses the interaction between sociology and the main economic, political and social change in the country, including the 1910 Mexican Revolution, the main social movements, the role of the intellectual exiles from Spain and Latin America, and the participation of women, who have often remained invisible in the history of sociology. The book explores how sociological discourse played a fundamental role in the separation of secular and public education and the search for a ‘national project’ from 1868 onwards, despite the lack of an institute of social research until 1930; how sociology became an autonomous social science, led by a few intellectuals and public figures, as it became institutionalized in universities, and the effect this had on the development of the discipline; the influence of Marxism during the 1970s; and the progression from a process of specialization after the fall of the Berlin Wall to a new trend of working in collective projects with an increasing interdisciplinary perspective in the first decades of the 21st century. Gina Zabludovky is a tenured Professor and Researcher at UNAM, Mexico. She is the author and editor of numerous books, scientific articles, and book chapters on various topics including social and political theory, the history of sociology in Mexico, business organizations and women in decision-making positions. She has received several awards in recognition of her academic achievements.

    Abstract: Terrorismus ist noch immer eines der bedrohlichsten Phänomene der heutigen Zeit. In diesem Buch werden mithilfe von Gerichtsakten vom Generalbundesanwalt beim Bundesgerichtshof in Karlsruhe die Radikalisierungsprozesse von 58 deutschen Jihadisten analysiert. Durch das umfassende Datenmaterial ist es möglich, die Wege dieser Personen von der Radikalisierung bis zum Anschluss an eine terroristische Organisation im Ausland (u.a. Islamischer Staat) sowie ausgeübte strafrechtlich relevante Handlungen zu rekonstruieren. Mithilfe einer Netzwerkanalyse wird das radikale Netzwerk untersucht, das aus Deutschland mit Jihadkämpfern im In- und Ausland verbunden gewesen ist. Dabei wird ein Augenmerk auf den Aufbau, die Funktionsweise und die Schlüsselpersonen des Netzwerks gelegt. Auch werden die unterschiedlichen Rollen und Unterstützungshandlungen der Netzwerkmitglieder in den Fokus genommen. Zusätzlich werden strafrechtlich relevante Radikalisierungs- und Mobilisierungsstrategien salafistisch-jihadistischer Prediger entschlüsselt, die weitaus tiefere Verbindungen zu terroristischen Organisationen im Ausland haben als bisher angenommen. Die Autorin Kristin Weber ist Kriminologin, Soziologin und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Bereich der Radikalisierungs-, Terrorismus- und Extremismusforschung.     Abstract: "Thousands of intact ceramic bowls and plates as well as fragments made in the medieval Byzantine empire survive to this day. Decorated with figural and non-figural imagery applied in a variety of techniques and adorned with colourful paints and glazes, the vessels can tell us much about those who owned them and those who looked at them. In addition to innumerable ceramic vessels, a handful of precious metal bowls and plates survive from the period. Together, these objects make up the art of dining in medieval Byzantium. This art of dining was effervescent, at turns irreverent and deadly serious, visually stunning and fun. It is suggestive of ways in which those viewing the objects used a quotidian and biologically necessary (f)act - that of eating - to reflect on their lives and deaths, their aspirations and their realities. This book examines the ceramic and metal vessels in terms of the information offered on the foods eaten, the foods desired and their status; the spectacle of the banquet; the relationship between word and image in medieval Byzantium; the dangers of taste; the emergence of new moral and social ideals; and the use of dining as a tool in constructing and enforcing hierarchy. This book is of appeal to scholarly and non-scholarly audiences interested in the art and material culture of the medieval period and in the social history of food and eating"--

    Abstract: Seit 2015 ist der Diskurs über die Flüchtlingspolitik sowie die Einstellungen gegenüber Flüchtlingen ein zentraler Fluchtpunkt der gesellschaftspolitischen Debatte. Von der »Willkommenskultur« bis zum Aufstieg der AFD lassen sich zahlreiche gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen über die Einstellungen gegenüber Flüchtlingen erklären. Felix Leßke zeigt, dass sich diese Einstellungsmuster nicht zufällig, sondern systematisch zwischen verschiedenen sozialen Gruppen verteilen. Sie lassen sich sozialräumlich verorten, so dass sie durch die sozialen Lagen und ihre Verhältnisse gegenüber den Flüchtlingen und anderen sozialen Akteursklassen erklärt werden können. Soziale Konfliktlinien werden dadurch sichtbar und nachvollziehbar, die sozialen Folgen von politischen Entscheidungen lassen sich besser abschätzen. Das Buch verbindet vor dem Hintergrund der Bourdieuschen Theorie eine innovative Theorie von Migration und Integration mit einer umfassenden empirischen Fundierung und trägt dazu bei, die Entwicklungen der vergangenen Jahre zu verstehen.

    Abstract: Ziel der vorliegenden kumulativen Dissertation ist eine ausführliche Gegenüberstellung einer sozialwissenschaftlichen und einer psychologisch/psychotherapeutisch veranlassten Methode. Hierbei wird das narrativ-biografische Interview und das Lebensrückblickinterview gegenübergestellt. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass sich bezüglich der theoretischen Verankerung der Methoden ein konsensueller Standpunkt ableiten lässt, indem überschneidende Ansichten zur Bedeutungszuschreibung der Erzählung für das Individuum und für die Gesellschaft herausgestellt wurden. Ebenfalls konnten einige Ebenen zur Gegenüberstellung spezifischer Merkmale herausgearbeitet werden, auf denen sich Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den Methoden ableiten ließen. Hinsichtlich einer synergetischen Behandlung des biografischen Zugangs wurden unterschiedliche Positionen aus der Unterscheidung sozialwissenschaftlicher und psychotherapeutischer Biografiearbeit herangezogen, die sich auf die Betrachtung der hier verglichenen Methoden übertragen ließen. Schlussfolgernd lässt sich ein stärker interdisziplinäres Verständnis für die Arbeit mit biografischem Material wünschen, um damit disziplinübergreifende Perspektiven stärker berücksichtigen zu können.

    Abstract: An die Revolution 1848/49 wird als wesentliches Ereignis deutscher Demokratiegeschichte erinnert; die Beteiligung von Frauen nimmt jedoch bis heute im kollektiven Gedächtnis einen untergeordneten Stellenwert ein. Die vorliegende Masterarbeit beschäftigt sich aus diesem Grund spezifisch mit der Rolle der Frauen in der Revolution 1848/49 und bietet Anregungen für die Integration des Themas in den Politikunterricht. Wie die Ergebnisse der Arbeit verdeutlichen, nutzten zahlreiche Frauen die Aufbruchsstimmung der 1840er Jahre, um sich auf verschiedene Arten und Weisen politisch zu engagieren. Zwar blieben viele dabei innerhalb der dichotomen Geschlechterteilung verhaftet, welche auf dem sich im 19. Jahrhundert herausbildenden bürgerlichen Geschlechtermodell beruhte. Einige überschritten diese Grenzen jedoch trotz harter Sanktionen auch bewusst. Sichtbar wird, dass die weibliche Beteiligung zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht zur grundsätzlichen Infragestellung der Geschlechterpolarität führte, aber die Frauen zunehmend den öffentlichen Raum ...

    Abstract: This study connects the idiosyncratic modernism of Wyndham Lewis, co-founder of the Vorticist art movement, with works of several artists from the British art rock tradition, among them Bryan Ferry, David Bowie, art-punk pioneers Wire and electronic pop musician John Foxx. By taking a transdisciplinary and intermedial approach to texts from two fields normally studied in isolation and staking out the elements of a shared modernist ethos, the book presents a new perspective on both fields relevant to scholars of literature, popular culture, and the visual arts alike.     Abstract: Elektronische Tanzmusik gehört heute zu den wichtigsten (Meta-)Genres populärer Musik. Darin spielt das Konzept der „Liveness“ eine zentrale Rolle, die gleichzeitig aber kaum beforscht ist – und dies, obwohl in Performances von Techno Liveness in technologische, soziale und kulturelle Bedingungen eingebettet ist, die die damit assoziierten Bedeutungen besonders unklar machen. Liveness bezieht sich traditionell auf die Performance von Musik in Echtzeit mittels Musikinstrumenten in Abgrenzung zu Aufnahmen. Welche Bedeutung wird Liveness aber zugeschrieben, wenn sich Performances aus der Präsentation aufgezeichneter Musik konstituieren, die zudem keinem instrumentalen Paradigma mehr folgen? Während Liveness bisher eher als Erfahrung und Qualität von Performances untersucht wurde, erschließt der Beitrag Bedeutungen von Liveness als performative Praxis aus Sicht ausübender DJs, Liveacts, Techno-Bands und Techno-Orchester, die in ihren Interaktionen mit Setups, Artefakten und Publika mit unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen von Liveness assoziiert werden. Deutlich wird, dass Musiker*innen sich zuvor einen Rahmen setzen (müssen), innerhalb dessen sie dann als bedeutsam empfundene Dimensionen von Liveness materialisieren.

    Abstract: This book examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has engendered a new and challenging environment in which borders drawn around people, places, and social structures have hardened and new ones have emerged. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, borders closed or became unwelcoming at the international, national, sub-national, and local levels. Debate persists as to whether those countries and territories that tightly managed their borders, like New Zealand, Australia, or Hong Kong, got it ‘right’ compared to those that did not. Without doubt, a majority of those who suffered and died throughout the pandemic have been those from vulnerable populations. Yet on the other hand, efforts taken to manage the spread of the disease, such as through border management, have also disproportionately affected those who are most vulnerable. How then is the right balance to be struck, acknowledging, too, the economic and other imperatives that may dissuade governments from taking public health steps? This book considers how international organizations, countries, and institutions within those countries should conceive of, and manage, borders as the world continues to struggle with COVID-19 and prepares for the next pandemic. Engaging a range of international, and sub-national, examples, the book thematizes the main issues at stake in the control and management of borders in the interests of public health. This book will be of considerable interest to academics in the fields of health law, anthropology, economics, history, medicine, public health, and political science, as well as policymakers and public health planners at national and sub-national levels

    Abstract: How did communication take place in the mission between people of different cultural backgrounds? What interests did Jesuits, indigenous people and Spaniards pursue in the Gran Chaco border region in the Jesuit province of Paraguay? What dependencies arose as a result? The Jesuit Florian Paucke (1719-1780) provided answers to these questions in his treatise »Hin und Her«, in which he wrote about his experiences in the Paraguay mission. Ulrich Stober is the first to make the manuscript and the missionary’s more than 200 watercolor drawings comprehensively accessible. On this basis, linguistic and cultural translation processes are examined with the aid of numerous archive materials. The focus is on the missionaries’ engagement with the indigenous language, diet and clothing as well as different ideas of gender roles. Even if Paucke adopted a genuinely European perspective in this respect, it is central that indigenous lifeworlds framed and shaped the questions of the European actors
    Abstract: Wie fand Kommunikation in der Mission zwischen Menschen unterschiedlicher kultureller Prägung statt? Welche Interessen verfolgten Jesuiten, Indigene und Spanier_innen im Grenzgebiet Gran Chaco in der Jesuitenprovinz Paraguay? Welche Abhängigkeiten entstanden dabei? Antworten auf diese Fragen lieferte der Jesuit Florian Paucke (1719–1780) in seiner Abhandlung »Hin und Her«, in der er seine Erfahrungen in der Paraguay-Mission verarbeitete. Ulrich Stober erschließt erstmals grundlegend das Manuskript sowie die über 200 Aquarellzeichnungen des Missionars. Auf dieser Basis werden unter Heranziehung von zahlreichem Archivmaterial sprachliche und kulturelle Übersetzungsprozesse betrachtet. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Auseinandersetzung der Missionare mit der indigenen Sprache, Ernährung und Bekleidung sowie unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen von Geschlechterrollen. Auch wenn Paucke diesbezüglich eine genuin europäische Perspektive einnahm, ist zentral, dass indigene Lebenswelten die Fragen der europäischen Akteure rahmten und formten

    Abstract: Durch welche rechtlichen, sozioökonomischen und gesellschaftspolitischen Rahmenbedingungen eines Staates wird das subjektive Wohlbefinden seiner Bürgerinnen und Bürger beeinflusst? Welche Rahmenbedingungen braucht es, damit das Glück der Menschen in einem Staat gedeiht? Dies sind Fragen, die die Menschheit seit jeher beschäftigen und auf die von vielen Seiten unterschiedliche Antworten gegeben worden sind. Aber erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten hat man begonnen sich diesen Fragen empirisch zu nähern. Deutschland kommt dabei eine besondere Rolle zu, denn die Geschichte des ehemals geteilten Landes erlaubt es, die Einflüsse unterschiedlicher gesellschaftspolitischer Rahmenbedingungen auf das subjektive Wohlbefinden zu untersuchen. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser historischen Besonderheit versucht die vorliegende Dissertation, relevante sozioökonomische und gesellschaftspolitische Einflussfaktoren auf das individuelle subjektive Wohlbefinden zu identifizieren. Dabei wird der Mehrdimensionalität des Konstrukts subjektives Wohlbefinden Rechnung getragen, indem neben der allgemeinen Lebenszufriedenheit (Originalarbeit 1) auch Aspekte der bereichsspezifischen Lebenszufriedenheit (Originalarbeit 2) und des affektiven Wohlbefindens (Originalarbeit 3) untersucht werden. Zusammenfassend lassen sich die Ergebnisse der Arbeiten dahingehend interpretieren, dass das subjektive Wohlbefinden in hohem Maße von aktuellen sozioökonomischen Umweltfaktoren wie Arbeitslosigkeit, Einkommen und Vermögen beeinflusst wird. Dabei bestehen auch nach 30 Jahren Einheit Unterschiede im subjektiven Wohlbefinden zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschen, die sich jedoch zunehmend angleichen. Verantwortlich für diese Angleichungstendenz dürften vor allem die verbesserten sozioökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen in Ostdeutschland seit der Wiedervereinigung sein.

    Abstract: In diesem Open-Access-Buch werden anhand von ethnographischen Fallbeobachtungen mit 16 Ritualleiter*innen folgende Fragen beantwortet: Wie positionieren sich Leitende von Todesritualen, die ausserhalb einer religiösen Gemeinschaft in der Deutschschweiz stattfinden? Welches Selbstbild vertreten die Ritualleiter*innen? Welche Aufgaben verbinden sie mit ihrer Tätigkeit? Wem sprechen sie Handlungs- und Wirkmächtigkeit (Agency) zu? Welche Themen und Konzepte sind für ihr Handeln und Erleben zentral? An welche kollektiven Sinngehalte (Deutungsmuster) schließen sie dabei an? Methodisch verortet sich die Arbeit in der Rekonstruktiven Sozialforschung. Dabei orientiert sie sich an Narrationsanalyse, Grounded Theory und Qualitativer Agencyforschung. Theoretisch knüpft die Studie an Konzepte von 'Ritualisierungen' und 'Agency' an, um auf empirischer Grundlage das Konzept der 'Ritualisierenden Agency' zu entwickeln: Durch die gewählten Formen der Ritualisierung im Umgang mit der Bestattung und der Begleitung der Angehörigen erlangen die Akteur*innen eigenständige Handlungsmächtigkeit und Verantwortlichkeit. Die Analysen zeigen, wie die Akteur*innen selbst ihre Handlungsspielräume und ihre eigene Teilhabe in den Interviews und in den Bestattungsritualen zum Ausdruck bringen

    Abstract: Was migration to Germany a blessing or a curse? The main argument of this book is that the Greek state conceived labor migration as a traineeship into Europeanization with its shiny varnish of progress. Jumping on a fully packed train to West Germany meant leaving the past behind. However, the tensed Cold War realities left no space for illusions; specters of the Nazi past and the Greek Civil War still haunted them all. Adopting a transnational approach, this monograph retargets attention to the sending state by exploring how the Greek Gastarbeiter’s welfare was intrinsically connected with their homeland through its exercise of long-distance nationalism. Apart from its fresh take in postwar migration, the book also addresses methodological challenges in creative ways. The narrative alternates between the macro- and the micro-level, including subnational and transnational actors and integrating a diverse set of primary sources and voices. Avoiding the trap of exceptionalism, it contextualizes the Greek case in the Mediterranean and Southeast European experience

Eryk Noji untersucht die Frage, wie Selbstvermesser*innen ihre Apps und Geräte im Alltag situieren. Mit Hilfe der Selbstvermessung regulieren Nutzer*innen ihren Alltag flexibel im Sinne kybernetischer Kontrolle. Diese Kybernetisierung des Selbst knüpft die Aussicht auf individuelle Autonomie an die Technisierung von Feedback und wird von Noji in ihren Ambivalenzen diskutiert. Der Autor Eryk Noji ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrgebiet Soziologische Gegenwartsdiagnosen an der FernUniversität in Hagen und Koordinator der interdisziplinären Forschungsgruppe Figurationen von Unsicherheit. Zuvor hat er im DFG-geförderten Forschungsprojekt Taxonomien des Selbst. Zur Genese und Verbreitung kalkulativer Praktiken der Selbstinspektion zur Selbstvermessung geforscht.

    Abstract: In recounting their migration journey, references to nationality pervade the narratives of Zimbabweans in South Africa. Given the challenges many migrants confront based on their nationality, this presents a seeming paradox. This qualitative interview study, conducted with Zimbabwean migrants in two areas of Cape Town—Observatory and Dunoon—aims to elucidate the nuances of national self-descriptions in a demanding environment. Identifying as Zimbabwean serves as a sanctuary and a retreat, where alternative identifications often prove transient; embracing Zimbabweanness fosters an affirmative and positive self-perception, surpassing the limitations of other collective self-descriptions. Rather than pre-emptively characterizing a nationalist demeanour, the articulation of national self-description emerges as a strategic tool to navigate experiences of hostility and discrimination, while also asserting legitimate claims to equal opportunities. In this way, nationality takes a trajectory that diverges from conventional notions of nationality (and the ones of the nation-state or citizenship) as per Northern theory, contributing to alternative conceptualizations within the framework of the Global South. About the author Johannes Kögel studied philosophy and sociology in Munich and Cape Town. He currently works as a research associate at the University of Munich (LMU München). He has conducted social research on diverse topics such as brain-computer interfaces, xenotransplantation, and migration in South Africa. .

Neuseeland normierte als eines der ersten Länder der Welt eigene Rechte der Natur, indem das Land den Te Urewera Wald und den Whanganui Fluss als Rechtssubjekte gesetzlich anerkannte. Die Gesetzgebung wurde weltweit als umweltrechtliche Pionierleistung gefeiert. In Zeiten der Klima- und Biodiversitätskrise liegt daher der Gedanke nahe, auch im deutschen Rechtssystem über die rechtliche Aufwertung der Natur nachzudenken. Die Arbeit befasst sich daher mit der Frage, ob Rechte der Natur nach neuseeländischem Vorbild in Deutschland sowohl rechtlich zulässig als auch geboten und erforderlich sind. Die Autorin Katharina Bader-Plabst, LL.M. (Auckland) ist derzeit als Rechtsanwältin in München tätig. Dort berät Sie private und öffentliche Mandanten zu allen verwaltungsrechtlichen Fragestellungen rund um Projekte im Bereich der erneuerbaren Energien. Die eingereichte Doktorarbeit wurde von der Universität Augsburg als Dissertation angenommen.     Abstract: ‚Männlichkeit‘ gilt als lange gleichgesetzt mit dem ‚Allgemein-Menschlichen‘ und daher als Spezifikum regelrecht unsichtbar. Was macht das Nachdenken über und die Beforschung von ‚Männlichkeit‘ dann epistemologisch wie gesellschaftlich wahrscheinlich? Dieser Frage geht die vorliegende Studie aus gesellschaftstheoretischer Perspektive nach. Entlang sozialwissenschaftlicher Publikationen zu ‚Männlichkeit‘ von 1908-2022 werden gesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge rekonstruiert, die die (wissenschaftliche) Reflexivierung von ‚Männlichkeit‘ bedingen. Damit stellt die Studie eine erste systematische Untersuchung des Feldes der Männlichkeitsforschung dar. Zudem entpuppt sich das vergleichsweise kleine Forschungsfeld als reichhaltiges Labor, an dem sich über dessen Partikularität hinaus soziologische Grundfragen und methodologische Aspekte diskutieren lassen: darunter Subjekt-Gesellschaft-Verhältnisse, Epistemologie und Operationalisierung, Prozesse der Grenzziehungen und Stabilisierung wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen sowie die Bedeutung von Un-/Sichtbarkeit, Paradoxien und blinden Flecken von Beobachtungen. Die Autorin Jana Fritsche studierte Soziologie, Politikwissenschaften und Gender Studies an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität und wurde dort 2023 mit einer Arbeit über die Entwicklung der Männlichkeitsforschung promoviert.     Abstract: In diesem Open-Access Buch wird die Transformation von traditionellen zu unternehmerischen Hochschulen unter einer neoliberalen Wissens- und Identitätspolitik untersucht. Vor dem Hintergrund einer Ökonomisierung der Gesellschaft geraten deutsche Hochschulen und ihre Angehörigen ab den 1990er Jahren zunehmend unter Druck, sich unternehmerisch-manageriale Denk- und Handlungsweisen anzueignen, um den wissenschaftspolitischen Forderungen nach einer höheren Wettbewerbs- und Leistungsfähigkeit, einer Qualitätssteigerung sowie nach mehr Transparenz und Effizienz Rechnung zu tragen. Mithilfe der Forschungsperspektive der Soziologie des individuellen Widerstands werden die Subjektivierungsweisen von Wissenschaftler*innen mit den Subjektivierungsformen des Managementdiskurses kontrastiert und (Ent-)Subjektivierungsprozesse in der deutschen Hochschullandschaft rekonstruiert. Der Autor Alexander Lenk hat am Institut für Soziologie an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena promoviert. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der Subjektivierungsforschung, Diskurs-/Dispositivanalyse, Gouvernementalitätsstudien sowie der Wissenschafts- und Hochschulforschung.

    Abstract: Die Arbeit behandelt grundlegende Fragen der strafbaren Verletzung der Unterhaltspflicht. Sie umfasst das durch § 170 I StGB zu schützende Rechtsgut ebenso wie eine mögliche Bindungswirkung zivilgerichtlicher Entscheidungen sowie die Rechtsfolgen dieser Straftat. Als zur Legitimation des § 170 I StGB hinreichend gewichtiges Rechtsgut wird allein der notwendige Lebensbedarf des Unterhaltsberechtigten erkannt. Anders als Statusentscheidungen entfalten familiengerichtliche Entscheidungen zum Ob und zur Höhe einer Unterhaltspflicht im Strafverfahren keine Bindungswirkung. Ermittlungsbehörden und Strafgerichte müssen die Unterhaltspflicht daher eigenständig feststellen. Um dem nachkommen zu können, benötigen sie über die dargestellten bisherigen Ermittlungsinstrumente, wozu bereits de lege lata der Zugriff auf Sozialdaten gehört, hinaus de lege ferenda Zugriff auf Steuerdaten möglicher Unterhaltspflichtverletzer.     Abstract: The plight of Vietnamese migrants in the UK has featured prominently in recent media and public policy debates on modern slavery, illegal border crossings, and labour exploitation. Yet little attention has been paid to their subjective experiences of border crossings, nor the wide range of categories they pass between. Vietnamese migrants coming to the UK in search of work face a complex array of decisions surrounding the respective costs and risks related to a chosen migration route which must be weighed against personal and collective expectations. These complex decisions are compounded by a shifting and highly stratified immigration and borders regime which renders migrants more vulnerable through restricting rights and increasing surveillance. This chapter explores the experiences and imaginaries of the UK border among migrants who have crossed the UK border, as well as those who intend to make the journey. We explore the contrast between the expectations and realities of UK borders through in-depth interviews with Vietnamese migrants. We argue, notwithstanding knowledge of the risks involved in border crossings and the hostile border enforcement regime, imaginations of opportunities for transforming local livelihoods remain powerful and deep-seated political and cultural narratives for Vietnamese migrants

In 2017, the VPRO web team uploaded these episodes on YouTube, which allowed viewers to comment on these episodes. Supported by a theoretical reflection on the Europeanity discourse and its contingencies, and on the hegemonic or semi-hegemonic articulations of this discourse (with a central role allocated to European benevolence), this chapter shows the discursive consequences of the material dislocations caused by different migration flows in Cyprus and in Greece. The chapter analyses how the episodes represent the contradictions between European benevolence on the one hand, and popular intolerance and the workings of the border apparatus on the other. The analysis of these episodes thus shows how Europe is discursively constructed through the ceaseless interactions and unresolved tensions between the centre and the margins, articulating a Europe of both benevolence and intolerance

    Abstract: Resilienz ist das Konzept der Stunde. Die Coronakrise, die Flutkatastrophe im Ahrtal und die Energieknappheit haben Resilienz an die Spitze der politischen Agenda gesetzt. Auch für die Stadtentwicklung gilt Resilienz als Ziel. Doch was steckt hinter diesem relativ neuen Begriff? In diesem Open-Access Band erfahren die Leser*innen wie Städte auf Krisen und Katastrophen besser vorbereitet werden müssen, um diese gut zu überstehen und gestärkt aus ihnen hervorzugehen. Die Beiträge zeigen konkrete Beispiele, wie Städte resilienter gestaltet werden können. Welche Voraussetzungen müssen dafür geschaffen werden und welche Hindernisse gibt es? Für das Ziel urbaner Resilienz bedarf es rascher, tiefgreifender und systemischer Wandlungen auf allen Ebenen, von der Gesamtstadt bis zum Quartier oder der Nachbarschaft. Der Weg dahin und die entsprechenden Instrumente sind vielfach bekannt; dennoch wird bislang nicht mit der notwendigen Entschlossenheit vorgegangen. Dieser Band enthält empirisch belegte Beispiele aus der aktuellen Stadtforschung, zeigt Konflikte auf und diskutiert Lösungen. Die Beiträge analysieren, wie bestehende Einsichten zum Handeln führen und vorhandenes Wissen klug eingesetzt werden kann. Sie verweisen auch darauf, warum existierende Lösungsvorschläge nicht zum Einsatz kommen. Anhand der Betrachtung unterschiedlicher kommunaler Handlungsfelder wie blau-grüner Infrastrukturen, Energie- und Wärmewende, Umweltstressoren, Wohnen und Gesundheit wird ein tieferes Verständnis für die resiliente Stadt entwickelt.     Abstract: This open access book presents a series of speculative, experimental modes of inquiry in the present times of environmental damage that have come to be known as the age of the Anthropocene. Throughout the book authors develop more nuanced ways of engaging with the environmentally vulnerable Arctic. They counter distancing, exoticising, and even apocalyptic imaginaries of the Arctic by staying proximate with mundane places and beings of the north. The volume engages and plays with familiar tourism concepts, such as hospitality, visiting, difference, care, openness, and distance, while expanding the focus from binary and human-centric approaches of hosts and guests to questions of wellbeing among multispecies communities. The transdisciplinary group of contributors share a curiosity about how staying proximate may provide theoretical depth and epistemological openings to attend to current tensions and to diversify the ways we do and enact research. Thus, each chapter provides a methodological experiment with proximity, developing diverse ways of envisioning and storying more-than-human worlds.

    Abstract: This open access book examines places on the margins and the dynamics through which a marginal position of a place is created. Specifically, it explores how places, mostly in sparsely populated areas, often perceived as immobile and frozen in time, come into being and develop through interference of everyday mobilities and creative practices that cut across the spheres of culture and nature as usually defined. Through fieldwork and case studies from areas in Iceland, Finland, Greenland, and Scotland, the book’s twelve chapters draw out the multiple relations through which places emerge, where people compose their lives as best they can with their surroundings. A special concern is to explore the links between travelling, landscape, and material culture and how places and margins are enacted through mobilities and creative practices of humans and other beings. The emphasis on mobility disturbs the perception of a place as a bounded entity and offers a useful and necessary understanding of places as mobile and fluid. Mobilities on the Margins is a novel and timely contribution to the exploration of human and more-than-human interactions in a world of increasingly fluid mobilities and insistent crises

    Abstract: In 1965 the UK enacted the Race Relations Act while the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) opened for signature and ratification. In the US, the changes that brought down the walls of segregation, conveying some equality to black people essentially began with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These ground-breaking instruments marked a commitment—domestically and internationally by the state parties to the ICERD—to address racial injustice and inequality through legal means. Yet, the intervening years reveal the challenges of pursuing racial justice and equality through the medium of law. In recent years, allegations of institutional racism have been levelled against numerous public institutions in the UK, while the rise of populism globally has challenged the ability of law to effect change. This edited collection draws attention to the need to reflect on the persistence of racial inequalities and injustices despite law’s intervention and arguably because of its ‘unconscious’ role in their promotion. It does so from a multiplicity of perspectives ranging from the doctrinal, socio-legal, critical and theoretical, thereby generating different kinds of knowledge about race and law. By exploring contemporary issues in racial justice and equality, contributors examine the role of law—whether domestic or international, hard or soft—in advancing racial equality and justice and consider whether it can effect substantive change

    Abstract: Der Begriff der Produktivität findet täglich Verwendung, um die eigene Leistung zu bewerten. Darin, so die These, zeigt sich ein problematisches Verhältnis zur eigenen Tätigkeit. Denn was bedeutet Produktivität? Die Autorin geht von dem antiken weiten Verständnis von Produktivität als generellem Wirkprinzip aus und zeigt, wie sich Vorstellungen in Bezug auf das, was als produktiv gilt, gewandelt haben. Heute dominiert das ökonomische Verständnis, das die Beziehung zwischen Input (hervorbringender Natur) und Output (hervorgebrachter Natur) quantifiziert. Produktiv ist der Mensch, wenn er viel schafft – und nicht, wenn er ‚sich hervorbringt‘. Die Autorin entwickelt einen neuen Produktivitätsbegriff, der die menschliche Fähigkeit zu produktiver Selbstwerdung ins Zentrum stellt. So entsteht auch ein neuer Blick auf (humanistisch) produktive Arbeit, der diese nicht an Effizienzmaximen, sondern der Beziehung des Subjekts zur Tätigkeit festmacht. Zugleich soll Systemproduktivität im Subjekt verwurzelt werden: Das (wirtschaftliche) System gilt nicht mehr als produktiv, wenn es kurzfristig Gewinne, sondern nur, wenn es langfristig Bedingungen für Individual(re)produktivität bereitstellt. Der Begriff der Produktivität wird so (wieder) als Vermittlungsbegriff fruchtbar gemacht. Die Autorin Hannah Schragmann arbeitet in einem Start-Up daran, positiven Impact auf die SDGs zu skalieren und forscht zugleich zu neuen Ansätzen der (Re)Produktivitätsbemessung, die ökologisch-soziale Auswirkungen internalisieren.
