Abstract: In 2015 many camps were opened to accommodate newly arriving migrants in Berlin. Christian Sowa studies this form of accommodation. Moving beyond an exclusive focus on borders and migration, he argues that camp accommodation must be thought of and studied as part of the urban context and as a specific form of housing. The study provides an in-depth case study, discusses policy alternatives, argues for »housing for all instead of camps«, and contributes to bringing urban and migration studies into public discussion. In times of new waves of migration, the topic of migrant accommodation within urban environments remains highly relevant today.

Abstract: Kochen und Essen sind medial omnipräsent und es gibt kaum noch einen Ort, an dem nichts gegessen oder getrunken wird - dabei bleibt die Küche im Zuhause zunehmend kalt. Dieses Paradox wirft Fragen an die räumlichen Zusammenhänge gegenwärtiger Essenspraktiken auf, denen Julia von Mende auf den Grund geht. Ihre Befragungen und zeichnerische Analysen führen die Leser*innen von Berliner Küchen an Orte außer Haus und in die Vergangenheit. Dabei werden das Verhältnis von Privathaushalt und städtischem Umfeld thematisiert, Einblicke in die urbane Lebensrealität im beschleunigten (Ess-)Alltag eröffnet und gesellschaftliche Wirkmechanismen freigelegt.

Abstract: As the art that calls most attention to temporality, music provides us with profound insight into the nature of time, and time equally offers us one of the richest lenses through which to interrogate musical practice and thought. In this volume, musical time, arrayed across a spectrum of genres and performance/compositional contexts is explored from a multiplicity of perspectives. The contributions to the volume all register the centrality of time to our understanding of music and music-making and offer perspectives on time in music, particularly though not exclusively attending to contemporary forms of musical work. Abstract: "This book discusses how musicians from Bahia, an emblematic African diasporic location in northeastern Brazil, think about, discuss, compose, rehearse, perform, and stage music inspired by what they perceive to be their own African ancestry. It argues that these musicians assert Afro-Brazilian identities and connect to the African continent and other diasporic places by creatively engaging essentialized notions about African music and culture: instead of mechanically reproducing these tropes, they emphasize them or downplay them. The book theorizes these preconceived notions about African music, culture, and performance as tropes of Africanness, emphasizing that they exist in two interrelated realms: as essentialist ideas in discourse and as concrete practices and sounds. Six commonly encountered tropes of African music are analyzed: the notions that its most important parameter is rhythm and that it is dominated by percussion; that it is meant to be danced to or deeply embodied rather than intellectualized; that it always touches on the sacred; that it is spontaneous and improvisatory; and that it reflects communalism rather than individualism. Through four case studies from Bahia (a jazz big band called Orkestra Rumpilezz, a symphony orchestra called the Orquestra Afrosinfônica, and two berimbau orchestras led by capoeira practitioners), the book demonstrates the nuances of musical creation in the African diaspora, acknowledging the genuine impact that essentialisms have on Bahian music while showing that they may not be an essential part of the musicians' African roots"--

Abstract: Zu Zeiten einer anhaltenden Urbanisierung stehen Fragen urbaner Nachhaltigkeit zunehmend im Mittelpunkt, zum Beispiel nach dem Verhältnis von Mensch und Natur, von Staat und Zivilgesellschaft und hinsichtlich der Kulturen des Zusammenlebens in der Stadt. Mit einem besonderen Schwerpunkt auf kulturell-künstlerischen sowie kreativ-innovativen Initiativen und Projekten analysieren die Beiträger innen des Bandes unterschiedlichste Strategien einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung am Beispiel der Stadt Hannover auf Makro-, Meso- und Mikroebene. Sie untersuchen das Potential solcher Projekte, die Netzwerke, in denen sie verwirklicht werden, sowie Probleme und Chancen in deren Umsetzung; und bieten sowohl einen inter- und transdisziplinären Forschungsbeitrag als auch Denkanstöße und Handlungsoptionen für urbane Nachhaltigkeit.

Abstract: With its dynamic choreographies and booming drumbeats, taiko has gained worldwide popularity since its emergence in 1950s Japan. Harnessed by Japanese Americans in the late 1960s, taiko's sonic largesse and buoyant energy challenged stereotypical images of Asians in America as either model minorities or sinister foreigners. While the majority of North American taiko players are Asian American, more than four hundred groups now exist across the United States and Canada, and these groups are comprised of people from a variety of racial and ethnic identities. Using ethnographic and historical approaches combined with performance description and analysis, this text explores the connections between taiko and Asian American cultural politics at the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality

Abstract: 'Musical Minorities' is the first English-language monograph on the performing arts of an ethnic minority in Vietnam. Living primarily in the northern mountains, many of the one million Hmong in Vietnam have strategically maintained their cultural distance from foreign invaders and encroaching state agencies for almost two centuries. They use cultural heritage as a means of maintaining a resilient community identity, malleable to their everyday needs and to negotiations among themselves and with others in the vicinity. Case studies of revolutionary songs, countercultural rock, traditional vocal and instrumental styles, tourist shows, animist and Christian rituals, and light pop from the diaspora illustrate the diversity of their creative outputs

Abstract: Der Begriff der Aneignung erlebt in Diskursen zu Theorie, Praxis und Politik der Stadtentwicklung ein Revival: Angesichts der Dynamiken spätmoderner Ökonomie und Politik geht es um die Verfügbarkeit und den selbstbestimmten Gebrauch von städtischem Raum und Lebenszeit. Dieser Diskurs schließt auch das »Selber machen« von urbanen Freiräumen mit ein, »Stadtentwicklung von unten« soll die urbanen Freiräume von morgen bestimmen. Bereits nach der Planungseuphorie der 1950/60er Jahre lenkte man den Blick auf »andere« Akteure der Produktion und des Gebrauchs von urbanen Freiräumen. Dieses Buch widmet sich der vergleichenden Betrachtung der damaligen und aktuellen Theorien über die Aneignung von urbanen Freiräumen in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen.

Abstract: "Few aspects of daily existence are untouched by technology. Learning and teaching music are no exceptions and arguably have been impacted as much or more than other areas of life. Abstract: In "The African Imagination in Music", noted music scholar Kofi Agawy offers a fresh introduction to the vast, immensely rich and diverse set of repertoires that comprise the sound worlds of Sub-Saharan African music. Agawu introduces readers to the basic elements of African music and to the values upon which they are built. He then explores the key dimensions and resources of African music, including the place of music in society, musical instruments, the relationship between language and music, rhythm, melody, form, harmony and finally, appropriations of African music by musicians around the world. Written in an accessible styles, "The African Imagination in Music" is poised to renew interest in Black African music, and to engender discussion of its creative underpinnings by Africanists, ethnomusicologists, music theorists and musicologists. - Kofi Agawu was born in Ghana, West Africa where he received his initial education before studying in the UK and the US. He has taught and lectured at numerous universities in Africa, Europe and the United States. Agawu is a wide-ranging scholar and author of numerous articles and books on musical semiotics, the analysis of music, and West African music, which include "Playing with Signs: A Semiotic Interpretation of Classical Music" (Princeton University Press, 1991), "African Rhythm: A Northern Ewe Perspective" (Cambridge University Press, 1995), "Representing African Music: Postcolonial Notes, Queries, Positions" (Routledge, 2003) and "Music as Discourse: Semiotic Adventures in Romantic Music" (Oxford University Press, 2008).
