    Kurzfassung: Sapéo, ein traditionelles Dorf mit mythischem Ursprung, das einst von besonderer ritueller Bedeutung für die umliegenden Dörfer war, wird zunehmend von Prozessen des Wandels erfaßt. Handwerke wie Töpfern, Schmieden, Flechten oder Weben werden immer seltener. Besonders deutlich zeigt sich der Wandel in der Bauweise. Häuser werden nur noch selten aus handgeformten Lehmklumpen gebaut, zunehmend werden luftgetrocknete Lehmziegel verwendet. Noch werden die Dächer in traditioneller Weise mit Gräsern gedeckt. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist der Lehmspeicher. Er wird von Hand geformt, mit Lehmreliefs verziert und symbolisiert Wohlergehen. Der Film zeigt die verschiedenen handwerklichen Tätigkeiten, insbesondere die verschiedenen Bauweisen und den Umzug eines Gehöfts. In Interviews mit Augustin Taoko äußern sich die Dorfbewohner zu ihrer Geschichte, zur wirtschaftlichen Situation und zur Bautradition.

    Kurzfassung: Patamban ist ein auf Töpferei spezialisiertes Dorf. Die Töpferei wird in den Familien vor allem von den Frauen betrieben. Am Beispiel einer Großfamilie wird die flexible Arbeitsorganisation gezeigt, die es den Frauen ermöglicht, neben der Töpferei auch ihren alltäglichen Arbeiten wie Kochen, Waschen, Putzen usw. nachzugehen. Die angewendete Modeltechnik erlaubt eine schnelle Anpassung der Arbeit an die Notwendigkeiten. Die Männer widmen sich vor allem dem Ackerbau, helfen aber auch in der Töpferei mit. Die Zusammenarbeit in der Familie, die Einbindung aller drei Generationen in die Arbeit, sichert ihnen die wirtschaftliche Grundlage. Ein differenziertes Tonwarenangebot erlaubt eine schnelle Reaktion auf die Wünsche des Marktes. Entwicklungsorganisationen fördern das Handwerk durch Wettbewerbe und Töpfereimärkte, z. B. anläßlich der Fiesta Cristo Rey in Patamban. Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht Genoveva Ruíz, eine der erfolgreichsten Töpferinnen des Dorfes, die im Interview von ihrer Arbeit und Familie erzählt.

    Kurzfassung: Die für die Filmaufnahme bestellten sieben Musiker spielen ein bekanntes Stück der zeremoniellen Gondang-Musik, die heute noch, vor allem bei den Ahnen- und Totenfesten, zur Begleitung der Zeremonialtänze erklingt. Die Besetzung besteht aus einer Sarunei (Oboe), dem Trommelspiel Taganing mit fünf Trommeln, der Baßtrommel Gordang sowie vier Gongs (Ogung) und der Aufschlagplatte Hesek-hesek. Somba-somba bedeutet Anbetung, Verehrung (früher des höchsten Gottes der Batak).
    Kurzfassung: The seven musicians chosen for the filmed sequences play a well-known piece of ceremonial Gondang music that is still played today, primarily at festivals for ancestors and the dead, to accompany the ceremonial dances. The instrumentation consists of a "Sarunei" (oboe), the Taganing drum set with five drums, the Gordang bass drum, as well as four gongs (Ogung) , a "Hesek-hesek" striking plate. Somba-somba means adoration, admiration (in former times of the highest god of the Batak).

    Kurzfassung: In der für die Filmaufnahme bestellten Aufführung spielen fünf Musiker. Gendang sarunei heißt die offizielle Zeremonialmusik der Karo-Batak. Sie besteht aus einer Sarunei (Oboe), zwei Gendang-Trommeln und einem sehr großen wie einem sehr kleinen Gong. Das erste Stück Mari-mari (Komm herbei!) wird bei altreligiösen Zeremonien zur Geisteranrufung bei Besessenheitstänzen gespielt. Patam-patam, eine schnelle Tanzbegleitung, kann bei jeder offiziellen Festlichkeit erklingen.
    Kurzfassung: Five musicians play in the performance booked for the film take. The official ceremonial music of the Karo-Batak is called Gendang sarunei. It is composed of a Sarunei (Oboe), two Gendang drums, and a very large gong as well as a small one. The first piece "Mari-mari" (Come over here!) is played in old religious ceremonies to call up the spirits in possession dances. Patam-patam, a rapid dance accompaniment, can be heard at any official festivity.

Das erste Stück gehört zum Repertoire der "fröhlichen" Feste (z. B. Hochzeit), während das zweite bei Totenfeiern gespielt wird.
    Kurzfassung: Six musicians play on the Gonrang bolon (large Gonrang) instrumentation, which is used for ceremonial music, a Sarunei (oboe); six drums and four gongs. The first piece belongs to the repertoir of "happy" festivals (e.g. wedding); whereas the second one is played at obsequies (funeral rites).

    Kurzfassung: Die für die Filmaufnahme bestellten sieben Musiker spielen ein bekanntes Stück der zeremoniellen Gondang-Musik, die heute noch, vor allem bei den Ahnen- und Totenfesten, zur Begleitung der Zeremonialtänze erklingt. Die Besetzung besteht aus einer Sarunei (Oboe), dem Trommelspiel Taganing mit fünf Trommeln, der Baßtrommel Gordang sowie vier Gongs (Ogung) und der Aufschlagplatte Hesek-hesek. Im Titel des Stücks wird die Bitte um reichen Kindersegen ausgedrückt.
    Kurzfassung: The seven musicians chosen for the filmed sequences play a well-known piece of ceremonial Gondang music that is still played today, primarily at festivals for ancestors and the dead, to accompany the ceremonial dances. The instrumentation consists of a "Sarunei" (oboe), the Taganing drum set with five drums, the Gordang bass drum, as well as four gongs (Ogung) , a "Hesek-hesek" striking plate. A wish for a large number of children is expressed in the title of the piece.

Sie besteht aus zwei Röhrenzithern aus Bambus mit zwei aus der Haut herausgeschälten Saiten, die mit zwei dünnen Stöckchen angeschlagen werden, sowie einer Porzellanschale oder ähnlichem als Gongersatz. Als Melodieinstrumente treten noch eine Flöte oder wie hier die Laute Kulcapi hinzu. Silengguri ist ein Stück, das zur Begleitung von Besessenheitstänzen bei altreligiösen Zeremonien gespielt wird.

It consists of two tube zithers (Keteng-ketend) made of bamboo with two strings peeled out of a skin, which are beaten with two thin sticks, as well as a porcelain dish or something similar as a replacement for a gong. A flute or, as in this case, a lute are added as melody instruments. Silengguri is a piece that is played during old religious ceremonies to accompany possession dances.

A flute or the Kulcapi lute is added as melody instrument. In this case the open Surdam long flute. The first piece "Mari-mari" (Come over here!) is played in old religious ceremonies to call the ghosts in possession dances.

Die Stücke Gendang dudu pitu kali (Segen siebenmal), Gendang Raja (Gendang für den Raja), Gendang gajah mengiring gajah (Der Gajah [Opferbüffel] führt den Gajah) und Ende-ende juma gulangen (Das Lied von der Bergfarm) werden zur Begleitung der Zeremonialtänze bei Hochzeiten gespielt, das letzte auch bei dem Fest für die Jugend (Pesta muda-mudi).
    Kurzfassung: The eleven musicians chosen for the filmed sequences play four pieces using the Genderang set of instruments that are traditionally used for ceremonial music. It consists of a "Sarunei" (oboe), nine drums, three gongs, a "Pongpong" striking plate and the "Gerantung" gong set with four horizontally suspended iron plates. The "Gedang dudu pitu kalie" (sevenfold blessing) "Gedang Raja" (Gedang for the "Raja"), "Gendang gajah mengiring gajah" (The Gajah [sacrificial buffalo] leads the Gajah) and "Ende-ende juma gulangen" (The Song about the alpine farm) are used to accompany the ceremonial dances at weddings, the last one is also played at the Festival for Youth (Pesta muda-mudi).

    Kurzfassung: Vor dem Männerhaus in Malingdam/Imarin halten sich spielende Jungen und Männer auf. Salap verziert einen Ohrpflock, indem er mit dem Schneidezahn eines Nagetieres Verzierungen in den Bambus kratzt. Die Verzierungen bestreicht er mit Hautfett, um die Musterung hervortreten zu lassen. Er steckt den Ohrpflock in sein linkes Ohrläppchen. Während er arbeitet, spielt ein anderer Mann auf einer Maultrommel.
    Kurzfassung: Several boys and men are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam/Imarin. Salap is decorating an ear peg by scratching decorations in the bamboo with a rodent incisor. He smears dermal fat into the decorations so that the pattern will stand out. He sticks the ear peg into his left ear lobe. While he is working, another man is playing a Jew's harp.

    Kurzfassung: Im Dorf Dorong starb eine 80jährige Frau, die als Priesterin andere Frauen ausgebildet hat. Nach der Aufbahrung treffen Trauergäste ein. Frauen aus der Verwandtschaft halten Trauerwache und singen Klagelieder. Zwei Priesterinnen führen die Totenzeremonien durch. Am zweiten Tag wird die Tote in einen Einbaumsarg gelegt, der fest verschlossen wird. Am dritten Tag wird sie auf dem Friedhof beerdigt.
    Kurzfassung: In Dorong village, near Tamiang, an eighty-year-old woman has died. She was a priestess (wadian), responsible also for the training of other women. The film presents the exposure of the corpse, the arrival of the mourners, and the ceremonies connected with this event. The ceremonies are performed by two priestesses, one having the function of a teacher. The second day the corpse is laid in the coffin, the third day the burial takes place in the cemetery.

    Kurzfassung: Auf dem Dorfplatz von Malingdam/Imarin, wo sich die Männer aufhalten, stellt ein Mann aus Kalzitplatten durch Ritzen mit Steinsplittern eine Nasenstabrohform her. Als die Rohform zerbricht, arbeitet er an einer neuen, die er anschließend am Bach naß schleift und poliert. Um ihn herum finden andere Aktivitäten statt: Flechten, Faserherstellung, Gesichtsbemalung, Körperreinigung, Haarscheren, Maultrommelspiel, Gesang usw.
    Kurzfassung: A man is sitting on the village ground, the meeting place of men. Using chips of broken stones he carves a nose sticks out of a piece of calcite stone. The calcite breaks and he carves another one. Afterwards he grinds and polishes it at the streamlet. Around him the other men are busy with plaiting, making fibres, face painting, body cleaning, hairshearing, playing a jew's harp, singing, etc.

    Kurzfassung: Anlaß der in den Filmen E 2201 und E 2202 wiedergegebenen Zeremonie war der erste Europa-Besuch des Dalai Lama am 9. Oktober 1973 in Rikon/Schweiz. Die Gläubigen bitten den Dalai Lama "fest zu verweilen", d. h. lange zu leben und sich auch nach seiner gegenwärtigen Existenz immer wieder neu zu verkörpern, bis alle Lebewesen vom Leid erlöst sind.
    Kurzfassung: The film, composed of two parts (E 2201 and E 2202), presents the greater part of a ceremony held on 9th October 1973 in a big camp at Rikon (Switzerland) on the occasion of the Dalai Lama's first visit to Europe. At this ceremony hundreds of faithful entreat "perpetual presence" of the Dalai Lama, i. e. that he may live long and return to our world, after the extinction of his actual existence, in successive incarnations, until all beings are delivered from suffering.

    Kurzfassung: Men assembled for the grasshopper game are grunting and stamping a strict rhythm which determines when each man in turn jumps sideways over the back of the man in the centre. It is considered to be a mistake if a man is unprepared for the jump or gets out of rhythm. Such mistakes take place if the jumper's improvised steps in between the individual jumps are too extravagant. The centre man reprimands a player for his distracting behaviour.

    Kurzfassung: Vor einem Elefantenzahnorchester mit Trommeln ahmt der Nachfahre eines Berufskriegers tanzend und singend verschiedene Kampfsituationen nach. Er wird von drei Frauen, einem Glockenläuter, einem Blattwedler und einem Bläser umtanzt. Von einer weiteren Frau verspottet, tanzt er lebhafter.
    Kurzfassung: For various activities, the Dan have groups of singers and musicians, whose playing is supposed to impart special qualities: strength for the bushclearers, majestic deportment for the chieftain, courage for the warrior. Here, an orchestra of seven elephant tusks and five drums incites the fighting-spirit of the village's greatest warrior, who, in dance form, demonstrates several battle situations.

    Kurzfassung: Mit einem Stöckchen schlägt der Spieler die Bogensaite des Musikbogens vor dem Mund an, während er mit einem zweiten Stöckchen die Länge des schwingenden Teils der Saite verändert und so zwei verschiedene Grundtöne hervorruft. Die Tonfolgen beinhalten Sätze der Baule-Sprache, zumeist Sprichwörter.
    Kurzfassung: The Baule, relatives of the Ashanti of Ghana, play the musical bow as many other African tribes do. The string of the bow is struck with one small stick in front of the mouth of the player while with a second small stick the length of the string is changed in order to create two different key notes. The musical bow is player for the pleasure of the musician only, since the slight overtones can not be heard by the bystanders. Only the sound-film makes it possible to hear how the player uses his mouth as a sounding board. The succession of notes means, sentences of the language of the Baule, most of them being proverbs.

    Kurzfassung: The Gere (Kran) have male dancing masks and female singing masks. In contrast to the swift moving mask-dances of other tribes of the Ivory-coast, like the Baule or the Guro, the Gere mask dances are reticent. The costumes are impressive with puffy bast skirts and luxurious feather ornaments. The masks form a secret organization. They also practice jurisdiction, lead warriors into war and protect bush and river against abuse.

    Kurzfassung: Zwei Männer bauen aus sechs längs gespaltenen Stücken eines Baumstämmchens, die auf zwei Holme gelegt werden, ein einfaches Xylophon. Unter die Klanghölzer wird Gras gelegt, so daß sie frei schwingen können. Das Stimmen erfolgt nach Terzintervallen durch Austauschen und abgewogenes Zuhauen der Hölzer. Anschließend nehmen zwei Spieler einander gegenüber Platz und musizieren mit verteilten Stimmen.
    Kurzfassung: Two men make a simple xylophone. Pieces of a small tree, split length-wise, are put upon two bars of wood and underlaid with grass to make them swing freely. The tuning to thirds is done by changing and by precise cutting of the pieces of wood. Finally two musicians sit down opposite each other and start to play, each one with a different part.

To this category belong also acrobatic dances. Using difficult jumps, the young men dance, by turns, to the rhythms of three drums, one iron bell, one rattle-calabash and one "rub-rattle". Afterwards two solo-dancers appear.

    Kurzfassung: At the end of the Yams festival, which for the northern Dan separates the old year from the new year, the masks leave the bush and come down from the mountains to the village. They dance outside the village and then move over the country to greet the government officials. On the way each mask shows for our team typical parts from their repertoire.

In the village of Glekpleple one of these is an aged dancer with her 'rendevous' dance, which she performs on joyous occasions. A chorus of women accompanies her with vocal music and hand-clapping.

    Kurzfassung: This singing mask with its beak-shaped nose, from which a black beard of monkey-hair hangs down, is found in other functions as well, e. g. with the Konor tribe as one of the highest ranking spirits in the boys's circumcision camp. In Maple village it is explained as a Tukan mask. The Tukan is the king of the birds and is supposed to have brought the oil-palm to the Dan. Therefore the Tukan is mentioned in the songs of the mask.

Such snake-girls are also found in other villages of the Dan and Gere (Kran) along the western Ivory-coast and in eastern Liberia.

    Kurzfassung: The Zauli is a festive dance of masks during which ten or more masks appear one after the other. They demonstrate the Guro's great skill in dancing by their playing together with the rhythms of a drum ensemble. With the white flybrushes which the dancer holds in either hand he demonstrates to the drummers the way in which he intends to dance. The masks are of a modern style, vividly coloured, and with little figures carved on top.

    Kurzfassung: Im Dorf Asuakro tanzt ein Ballett junger Männer zur Begleitung dreier Trommeln. Dazwischen bewegt sich der Gbagba-Vogel. Nacheinander erfolgt der Auftritt der Schafsmaske, der roten Maske (Mandingo-Sklavin), der schwarzen (Baule-Herrin) und der weißen Maske (Europäerin).
    Kurzfassung: Both animals and people are parodied in the gbagba dance. Performers include a sheep mask, three masks who imitate women of various tribes, and a figure disguised as a cowherd who makes fun of the other masks.

    Kurzfassung: Junge Männer versammeln sich zu dem von einer Nachbar-Ethnie übernommenen Goli-Maskentanz. Vor dem Männerchor treten paarweise dreimal Masken unterschiedlicher Bedeutung (z. B. Tiermasken) auf. Die Sänger verlocken die Masken mit Gesang und Rasselschlagen zum Tanzen. Zwischen Masken und Chor entsteht dabei eine rege Interaktion.
    Kurzfassung: Shows excerpts of a dance involving three couples, each in typical but different masks. They are accompanied by a men's chorus and rattle calabashes.

    Kurzfassung: Maskentanz im Dorf Jidio: Auftritt einer Sängergruppe, der roten Elefantenmaske, eines unmaskierten Mannes und einer roten, menschlichen Maske. Weitere Masken sind: Antilopenmasken, eine Affenmaske und eine Büffelmaske. Die Masken und einige Unmaskierte tanzen zeitweise gemeinsam, zeitweise allein. Wechselgesang der Elefantenmaske mit einem unmaskierten Begleiter und Auftritt der Bongo-Antilope mit ihren langen Hörnern.
    Kurzfassung: In the dje mask dance of the Guro a large number of animal and spirit masks perform - a contrast to the dje dance of the Baule in which a large buffalo mask is the only participant.

    Kurzfassung: Herstellen einer Stielzither im Dorf Agba-Njansu aus einer Blattrippe der Ölpalme. Spielen des Instrumentes durch zwei Spieler: der eine schlägt die Saite mit zwei Stäbchen, der andere verlängert und verkürzt die Saite mit Hilfe eines Schneckenhauses.
    Kurzfassung: This musical instrument is made out of oil palm leaf veins and can be played by one or two people. If two play upon it, the first one strikes the string with two sticks while the second one shortens or lengthens the string by using a snail shell.
