It reveals the legends behind man-eating tribes, headhunters in jungles of Ecuador and sheds light on the link between human sacrifice and salvation. The series looks at rituals considered important and acceptable to one society but regarded, particularly in the West, as unacceptable and even abhorrent. The aim is to look at the differences and get explanations from practitioners in other societies as to why such rituals worked for them.

    Abstract: For twenty years, Camh has lived in North Vietnam, unable to return to his home in the south, a small fishing village where his wife waits for him. She has been a guerrilla fighter for the triumphant communist forces, and has made a living selling food in the market. She is happy to reunite with her husband until she learns that he has married a young woman in the north and has a child by her. The love triangle becomes more complicated: Huy, a man who has lost a leg is in love with Troa, who does not return his affection, and there is Hoa, a young woman who has lost both legs and who is in love with him. All of the characters' emotional injuries are as deep as those of Huy and Hoa, but they behave with great kindness towards one another. The movie was made for $36,000, but the lack of special effects allows us to concentrate on the difficulties of reunification and of finding both political and psychic peace. Winner of national prizes - Golden Lotus for Best Picture, Best Director, Best actress, Asia Pacific Film Festival for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Film, and Special Prize, Amiens Int'l Film Festival.

    Abstract: Ten years after he made Kafi's Story, director Arthur Howes returns to the Sudan to find the members of the Nuba who featured in his earlier documentary film. Soon after he had left the Sudan, the mountain area they had been living in became the battlefield of the civil war that has been destroying much of the Sudan ever since. With a government that is attempting to gain absolute control, the people of Nuba have been persecuted, deported, and deprived of much of their land. Children have been put into camps, many of them brainwashed in the military. Many of their fathers have voluntarily joined the army and are now being forced to fight their own people, as they have not been able to find any other way of making a living. Some of the Nuba people have fled to other countries, such as Ethiopia and Kenya. Groups of women have withdrawn further into the mountains. Howes, who had a great deal of difficulty obtaining a visa for the Sudan, manages to find several of the Nuba men and women he filmed back in the late eighties, and their testimonies are, without exception, revealing. He succeeds in organizing secret screenings of Kafi's Story, which they have never seen before, and the contrast between their lives then and now is shocking. It is rare to hear stories collected from so deeply within a community. Howes gives his personal perspective during much of his commentary.

    Abstract: After more than a quarter of a century without any form of religious ceremony, the Na, an ethnic group living on the Himalayan plateau, began openly practising their religion again in the early 1990s. Their priests are called daba. Among the few old shamans who are still living today, Dafa Luzo is the most remarkable. As the main character in the film, we see him looking after his farm and his family, as well as performing rituals to expel all unclean spirits and demons and honour the ancestors. His main worry, and his greatest hope, is to make sure his knowledge is safely handed down to the next generation.

    Abstract: This video documents the over-modeling in clay of a real human skull in Lae, Papua New Guinea, in the spring of 1997. A painted skull had been purchased from a trader. When Adam Kone visited, he found the skull poorly decorated and set out to mold a more elaborate skull-portrait, adding modern materials, in his friend's house. Asked to sculpt in the garden, he refused. Adam had nothing to do with the dead person, but was weary of head hunting suspicions, and feared arrest. Historically, skull art is associated with tribal warfare and headhunting, banned by the colonial administration in the 1920's, and equally outlawed in modern independent Papua New Guinea. Because of its association with a banned practice, skull art has become rare and is carried out in secrecy. In Adam's home on the Sepik, decorating skulls is a prominent, highly developed form of body art. A skull-portrait commemorates an initiate's first kill, a great warrior, a fierce enemy, an extraordinary, or beautiful person. The portrait honors a deceased person - friend or foe - and is held in high esteem. Sepik societies are known for their artistic wealth, but also as fierce warriors. The Iatmul people of the middle Sepik are the most prominent. Headhunting was once their major pastime, indulged like a sport, and feared by their neighbors. Among these warriors, killing an enemy was regarded an adult man's duty, a source of male pride, and a symbol of masculine identity. Ritualized homicide was part of initiation. Skull art belongs to the spirit house, Haus Tambaran. Adult men spend most of their time there. Only fully initiated, adult men are allowed into the men's house. The Haus Tambaran is the venue for all major male activities, including meetings, artistic exploits, religious rituals, and initiation ceremonies. Several long stones in front of the Haus Tambaran once served as sacred locations where a slain enemy's head was ritually severed from his body. Warriors' heads once provided the physical and spiritual foundations of Sepik society and its spirit houses. Skulls were buried under a Haus Tambaran's major supporting posts, adorned its cornices and windows, were kept inside on special shelves and skull racks, displayed, and carried around on special dance wards during funerary rites. An adorned skull commemorates and honors a dead person. Some have linked skull art to masking. Others have observed that skull art is quite realistic. Historic skulls-portraits capture individuals' real life features.

    Abstract: The Entlebuch is a pre-alpine rural area in Central Switzerland with a reputation for backwardness and isolation. This film deals with the region's inhabitants and their attitudes towards identity, belief and superstition in their contemporary life between tradition and modernity. The tales and stories of the various protagonists about their own lives show the broad range of attitudes and provide an insight into the regional identity of the valley.

    Abstract: Der Film thematisiert Probleme der ländlichen Entwicklung und die Bedeutung kulturell angepaßter Entwicklungsstrategien. In den 30er Jahren wurde im Mysore Distrikt in Südindien ein großes Bewässerungsprojekt realisiert. Mangala, ein bewässertes Dorf, entwickelt sich zum städtischen Zentrum. Die Produktivität des Landes steigt, die bewässerte Fläche wird ausgedehnt. Durch die Erhöhung der carrying capacity kann auch die wachsende Bevölkerung ernährt werden. Das Dorf ist sehr innenorientiert, hat eine starke soziale Identität und ist stolz auf das Erreichte. Im Gegensatz dazu hat sich Kalenahalli, ein "trockenes" Dorf, immer stärker nach außen orientiert, so sehr, daß sich eine soziale Gleichgültigkeit eingestellt hat. Das Dorf wird bald als Vorstadt in der wachsenden Stadt Mandya aufgehen. Der Film zeigt, wie die Dorfbewohner den Wandel sehen und wie einer von ihnen, T. Thimmegowda, nun ein wichtiger Beamter des Staates Karnataka, die Entwicklung einschätzt. Der Film basiert auf einer von Prof. T. Scarlett Epstein 1954 begonnenen und bis heute fortgeführten Studie. Es ist die einzige Studie in ganz Indien, die einen so langen Zeitraum erfaßt.
    Abstract: The film focuses on the problem of rural development. It indicates the importance of culturally sensitive development strategies. In the early thirties, a large canal irrigation scheme was triggered off in the Mysore district in South India. Mangala, an irrigated village, is on the way to becoming a model growth centre; increased per acre productivity and extension of irrigated acreages has fascilitated the land carrying capacity to accommodate increasing numbers. Mangala continues to be an introverted village; villagers continue to have a strong social identity and feel proud of their village achievements. By contrast, Kalenahalli, the dry village, has become more and more village extroverted, so much so that social anomie has set in and the village will soon disappear altogether becoming absorbed as a suburb by the nearby town of Mandya. The film not only presents how the villagers themselves see the changes that have taken place, but also how one of them, T. Thimmegowda, now a senior administrative official, perceives the development. The study on which the film is based was begun by Prof. T. Scarlett Epstein in 1954 and has been continued up to the present day. It is the only study in the whole of India in which the same researcher covers a period as long as 43 years.

    Abstract: Das Dorfbild der an den Flüssen gelegenen Siedlungen der Ngaju-Dayak wird durch eine Vielzahl von Holzobjekten und -skulpturen geprägt, die in enger Verbindung zum Totenkult stehen. Der Film berichtet über ihre kultische Bedeutung, zeigt das Schnitzen neuer, aber auch verwitterte alte Figuren, die für die Dörfer nördlich der Stadt Sampit in ihren wichtigsten Formen dokumentiert werden: Die Hampatong - Menschenfiguren mit Stellvertreterfunktion; die Sandong-Tulang - auf Pfosten gestellte Beinhäuschen mit der Weltenschlange Naga am Giebel; zurückgelassene Masken an Grabstellen sowie den auf hohen Masten thronenden Nashornvogel als Verkörperung des Obergottes Mahaltala.
    Abstract: The "villagescapes" of the settlements of the Ngaju-Dayak, which lie on rivers, are characterised by a multitude of wooden objects and sculptures, which are closely linked to the cult of the dead. The film reports on their cultic importance, shows the carving of new, but also weathered old, figures, which are documented for the villages north to the city of Sampit in their most important forms. The Hampatong human figures, which have a representation function; the Sandong-Tulang, charnel houses built on posts with Naga, the world serpent, on their gables; abandoned masks on grave sites as well as the rhinoceros bird enthroned on high masts as the embodiment of the head god, Mahaltala.

    Abstract: The Pshavi people of the eastern mountains of the Republic of Georgia perform a ritual which can be characterized as a syncretism of ancient polytheistic beliefs and Orthodox Christian faith, but which is qualified by city habitants of Tbilisi as pagan. The ritual of Tamar and Lashari celebrates queen Tamar (12-13th century) and her son Lasha, deified by the mountain dwellers.

    Abstract: Told against the backdrop of civil war, endemic poverty, and the struggles of everyday life in rural Sri Lanka, Death on a Full Moon Day revolves around the central protagonist, Wannihami, a blind man with a fierce sense of independence. When his son Bandara is killed by a land mine while fighting against Tamil rebels, Wannihami refuses to believe he is dead. Despite being overwhelmed by grief, Bandara's sister and her fiancee try to convince Wannihami to accept his son's death and the compensation payment the government is offering them. Impoverished as they are as a result of the civil war, the money could be used to complete construction of the family house and provide a better life for the family in a time of economic strife. However, even the poor conditions in which Wannihami and his family live cannot convince him to accept the money. In East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), millions of Hindu families were forced to choose between living under Islamic rule, or abandoning the land, which their ancestors had been living in for centuries. Shashikanta Sengupta, a lawyer, refuses to migrate, although he sends his son to study in Calcutta.     Abstract: Winner of the (RAI) Basil Wright Film Prize 1998 Ymako Teatri, a theatre company based in Ivory Coast, uses street theatre to question some contemporary West-African problems. Their originality consists in using the ‘invisible theatre’ method in order to surprise the public and thus make it react itself to its own problems. This documentary shows how a local theatre company efficiently uses fiction to problematise today’s African reality. This film presents two performances, one criticises the current proliferation of religious sects, the other deals with the awakening of villagers towards AIDS. Ymako, in Bambara, means 'our concerns'.

Ausgehend von der Hundertjahrfeier der Werkstatt im Jahre 1995 wird ihre wechselvolle Geschichte von den Familienmitgliedern selbst geschildert. Exkurse in zwei Museen in Osnabrück und Hagen a. T. W. erlauben eine Einordnung des Betriebes in die Geschichte der Töpferei im Osnabrücker Land. Die verschiedenen Phasen des Herstellungsprozesses einer Teekanne gliedern den zweiten Teil des Films, der die aktuelle Situation der Töpferei beleuchtet, unterstützt von Off-Kommentaren des jetzigen Werkstattleiters, Bernd Niehenke.
    Abstract: The Niehenke potter's workshop in Hasbergen near Osnabrück is the last business operation in western Lower Saxony in which traditional crockery is manufactured. Starting with the workshop's centennial celebration in 1995, its chequered history is told by members of the family themselves. Excursions in two museums in Osnabrück and Hagen a. T. W. allow classification of this business operation in the history of pottery in the Osnabrück region. The different phases of the manufacturing process of a teapot structure the second part of the film, which illustrates the current circumstances of the pottery workshop. This is supplemented by off-camera commentary of the present head of the workshop, Bernd Niehenke.

    Abstract: Der Film gibt Einblicke in den Arbeitsalltag des Senn und seiner Gehilfen auf der Alpe Ornach oberhalb von Bolsterlang im Allgäu im Jahre 1975. Neben den mit der Viehhaltung verbundenen Tätigkeiten bestehen ihre Hauptaufgaben im Buttern und Käsen. Der mit der Alpbewirtschaftung verbundene Aspekt des Landschaftsschutzes wird ausführlich erläutert. Vergleichende Aufnahmen aus dem Jahre 1996 zeigen, was sich in den vergangenen zwanzig Jahren in der Region und auf der Alpe geändert hat. Der Tourismus hat erheblich zugenommen und bei der Alparbeit, früher reine Männersache, hilft mittlerweile die Frau des Senn mit. Europaweit vereinheitlichte Regelungen für die Landwirtschaft aber - insbesondere in Bezug auf die Milchhygiene - machen die Arbeit auf der Alpe zunehmend unrentabler, so daß die Zukunft der Almwirtschaft im Allgäu in Frage gestellt ist.
    Abstract: The film provides insights into the working day routine of the Alpine dairyman and his helpers on the Ornach Alp (Alpine pasture) above Bolsterland in the Allgäu in 1975. Besides the activities connected with animal husbandry, making butter and cheese are their main tasks. The aspect of landscape protection that is linked to alpine dairy farming is discussed in detail. Comparative pictures from 1996 show what has changed in the region and on the Alp in the last 20 years. Tourism has substantially increased, and the Alpine dairyman's wife now helps in the alpine farm work, which was strictly men's business in the past. Throughout Europe, the standardised regulations for agriculture - but in particular those treating milk hygiene - are making the work on the Alp increasingly less profitable. Thus, the future of Alpine farming in the Allgäu is jeopardised.

    Abstract: Die Inuit von Grönland waren schon früh Gegenstand filmischer Repräsentation. Die ersten Filmaufnahmen entstanden 1896 im Volkspark von Kopenhagen. Seither spielen die Inuit in Dokumentar- wie auch in Spielfilmen, in Expeditions- und Reiseberichten wie auch in wissenschaftlichen Dokumentationen eine bedeutende Rolle. "100 Jahre Grönland im Film" zeigt Ausschnitte verschiedener Filmdokumente, analysiert sie kritisch besonders unter dem Aspekt der Repräsentation des Fremden und des Eigenen im Film. Dabei findet neben den filmgestalterischen Elementen besonders der sozioökonomische Kontext Berücksichtigung.
    Abstract: Greenland's Inuit were the object of cinematographic representation even in the early days of cinematography. The first film sequences were made in 1896 in the "Volkspark" in Copenhagen. Since then the Inuit have played a major role in documentaries, feature films, expeditions and travelogues as well as in scientific documentations. "100 Years of Greenland in Film" shows sequences of various cinematographic documents, analyses them particularly critically with regard to the aspect of the representation of the foreign culture and one's own culture in film. In the process, in addition to the cinematographic design elements, the socio-economic context is considered.

    Abstract: Sapéo, ein traditionelles Dorf mit mythischem Ursprung, das einst von besonderer ritueller Bedeutung für die umliegenden Dörfer war, wird zunehmend von Prozessen des Wandels erfaßt. Handwerke wie Töpfern, Schmieden, Flechten oder Weben werden immer seltener. Besonders deutlich zeigt sich der Wandel in der Bauweise. Häuser werden nur noch selten aus handgeformten Lehmklumpen gebaut, zunehmend werden luftgetrocknete Lehmziegel verwendet. Noch werden die Dächer in traditioneller Weise mit Gräsern gedeckt. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist der Lehmspeicher. Er wird von Hand geformt, mit Lehmreliefs verziert und symbolisiert Wohlergehen. Der Film zeigt die verschiedenen handwerklichen Tätigkeiten, insbesondere die verschiedenen Bauweisen und den Umzug eines Gehöfts. In Interviews mit Augustin Taoko äußern sich die Dorfbewohner zu ihrer Geschichte, zur wirtschaftlichen Situation und zur Bautradition.

    Abstract: Dieser erste von zwei Filmen der Serie "Pomakische Portraits" beschreibt das Leben im Dorf Bresnitza (Südbulgarien) durch Darstellung der Arbeit der Frauen, von Prozessen der Reislamisierung nach dem Ende des Kommunismus und der wachsenden westlichen Einflüsse. Am Beispiel der Muslimin Zeyneb und ihrer Familie sowie der jungen westlich orientierten Fidanka werden diese antagonistischen Prozesse in der heutigen pomakischen Gesellschaft thematisiert.
    Abstract: The first film of a series of two portrays life in the Pomak village of Breznitsa (South Bulgaria) focussing on female labour, processes of re-islamization after the downfall for communism and growing western influences. Taking the example of the muslim mother Zeyneb with her family and that of young western-oriented Fidanka these antagonistic processes in contemporary Pomak society are described.

    Abstract: Anläßlich des Teuila-Festivals reist eine Tanzgruppe der neuseeländischen Polizei nach West-Samoa. Diese Reise führt auch zwei in Auckland lebende Samoaner zurück in ihre Heimat. Tyrone Laurenson, in Auckland geboren, besucht regelmäßig seine Verwandten in Samoa; Michael Alofa, als 8jähriger nach Neuseeland eingewandert, kehrt nun nach 20 Jahren erstmals zurück. An beiden Beispielen wird die doppelte und zugleich gespaltene kulturelle Identität deutlich, die die Migranten in ihrer samoanischen Kultur verwurzelt läßt, aber mit der Zeit eine neue, an westlichen Werten orientierte Identität in Neuseeland hervorbringt.
    Abstract: A Cultural Group of the New Zealand Police travels to Western Samoa to perform at the annual Teuila Festival. Two group members of Samoan origin also return to Samoa on this occasion. While Auckland-born Tyrone Laurenson is on one of his visits to see relatives, Michael Alofa, who came to New Zealand with his parents 20 years ago as an eight-year-old, now returns for the first time. Both cases exemplify the split and at the same time double cultural identity of migrants who remain rooted in their Samoan culture, while over the years a new, western-oriented identity in New Zealand emerges.

    Abstract: The documentary, filmed during ethnographic field research, shows three portraits of 'ordinary' personalities - Mala, a young weaver sharing a one-bedroom house with nine siblings; Santa Cruz, once a fishtrader and now a healer and magician; and Muthiah, a videographer of upper class weddings - living in a neighbourhood in Nagercoil, a south Indian town. The aim of the video is to show the persons not as representatives of homogeneous masses, but to acknowledge them as individuals who nurse their own specific worries and strategies in a changing world. The protagonists thus themselves comment about their own lives and actions.

    Abstract: Based on the novel, Juara, by S. Othman Kelantan, Mamat, a Malaysian, works in Southern Thailand as a trainer in bullfighting (a jogho). In this small village, the winnings from the gambling during bull-fights, maintains the village economy. But when a village leader is killed during a bull-fight, Mamat has to uphold the village's honour by taking revenge. But a cycle of violence soon follows. U-Wei bin Haji Saari is the key Malaysian filmmaker preceding the rise of the Malaysian New Wave in 2000. His seminal work was his feature debut, Woman, Wife and Whore (1993). In 1995, his third feature, The Arsonist (1994), became the first Malaysian film to be selected in Cannes. The Champion (Jogho) is his fourth work and his latest feature, Hanyut (2011), based on Joseph Conrad's Almayer's Folly will be released in 2011.

    Abstract: Patamban ist ein auf Töpferei spezialisiertes Dorf. Die Töpferei wird in den Familien vor allem von den Frauen betrieben. Am Beispiel einer Großfamilie wird die flexible Arbeitsorganisation gezeigt, die es den Frauen ermöglicht, neben der Töpferei auch ihren alltäglichen Arbeiten wie Kochen, Waschen, Putzen usw. nachzugehen. Die angewendete Modeltechnik erlaubt eine schnelle Anpassung der Arbeit an die Notwendigkeiten. Die Männer widmen sich vor allem dem Ackerbau, helfen aber auch in der Töpferei mit. Die Zusammenarbeit in der Familie, die Einbindung aller drei Generationen in die Arbeit, sichert ihnen die wirtschaftliche Grundlage. Ein differenziertes Tonwarenangebot erlaubt eine schnelle Reaktion auf die Wünsche des Marktes. Entwicklungsorganisationen fördern das Handwerk durch Wettbewerbe und Töpfereimärkte, z. B. anläßlich der Fiesta Cristo Rey in Patamban. Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht Genoveva Ruíz, eine der erfolgreichsten Töpferinnen des Dorfes, die im Interview von ihrer Arbeit und Familie erzählt.

    Abstract: Filme 1 bis 4 zeigen die Kontrolle der Standvölker nach der Überwinterung, die Frühjahrswanderung in die Obstplantagen des Alten Landes, die Vorbereitung von Schwarmfangbeuteln und Körben sowie die mehrwöchige Schwarmzeit der Heidebienen: das Abgehen der Vorschwärme mit der alten Königin, die am Flugloch abgefangen werden, und das freie Ausfliegen der Nachschwärme mit ihren jungen Königinnen, die der Imker in Fangkörben sammelt, um mit ihnen den Bestand an Völkern etwa zu verdreifachen. Filme 5 bis 8 zeigen die Vorbereitung der neugebildeten Nachschwarmvölker und der ehemaligen Standvölker und die Wanderung in die Lüneburger Heide, wo rund 1500 Korbvölker auf großen Wanderständen aufgestellt werden, um aus der Heideblüte 4 bis 5 Wochen den Jahresertrag des Heideimkers einzutragen; im Herbst folgen die Auswahl der Standvölker und die Vorbereitung der übrigen Körbe für die Honig- und Wachsgewinnung sowie die Auffütterung der rund 700 Wintervölker; schließlich die Ernte des Heidehonigs, der aus Scheibenhonig und Preßhonig besteht, und die Gewinnung von Wachs. Wie ein Bienenkorb, ein Stülper, aus Roggenstroh und Weidenrutenstreifen hergestellt wurde, wird durch einen 9. Film aus Westfalen deutlich.

    Abstract: Dieser zweite von zwei Filmen der Serie "Pomakische Portraits" beschreibt das Leben im Dorf Bresnitza (Südbulgarien) nach dem Ende des Kommunismus aus der Sicht des alten Mannes Ibrahim. Die Reislamisierung wird am Beispiel einer Beschneidungsfeier für Jungen gezeigt. Ibrahim spricht über die Bedeutung des Islam, die Modernisierung und den Mangel an Respekt gegenüber den alten Menschen. Er reist mit dem Filmteam in die Hauptstadt Sofia, zur Gedenkstätte Pleven und zur großen Moschee in Shoumen.
    Abstract: This second film of series of two describes life in the Pomak village of Breznitsa (South Bulgaria) after the downfall of communism, as seen from the perspective of the old man Ibrahim. Aspects of re-islamization are demonstrated by a circumcision ritual of young boys. Ibrahim talks about the rise of Islam, changes brought by modernization and the loss of respect of the young towards the elders. He then travels with the filmteam to the capital Sofia, to the historic monument of Pleven and to the great mosque of Tumbal Jamia in Shoumen.

    Abstract: Trauer einer nunmehr in Hapokashitha lebenden Fraktion der Patanoetheri um einen ranghohen Mann, den zweiten Häuptling der Gruppe. Nach einem Rundtanz geschmückter Personen, mit der dieses Ereignis nach Art aller Feste (Reahu) eingeleitet wird, sieht man, wie in Kesseln Bananensuppe zubereitet wird. Es folgen Aufnahmen von vier trauernden Angehörigen, die klagend mit den Gegenständen des Verstorbenen tanzen. Wiederholte Sequenzen von den Tänzern zeigen, wie diese klagen und den Besitz des Verstorbenen vorzeigen. Noch während sie tanzen, beginnt ein Himou zwischen Heshiwarehima, einem Neffen des Toten, und Yoreshiawa, dem Headman der Hapokashitha-Gruppe. Danach werden unter dem Wehklagen der Trauergemeinde die Knochen des Toten zerstampft, die Knochenasche gesiebt und ein Teil in Bananensuppe vermischt von Trauergästen getrunken.
    Abstract: Mourning for a high-ranking man, the second chieftain of the group, by a fraction of the Pantaneotheri that now lives in Hapokashitha. After a round dance of adorned persons, with which this event is opened, as is the case for all types of festivals (Reahu), one sees how banana soup is prepared in kettles. Pictures of four mourning relatives, who are lamentingly dancing with personal possessions of the deceased. Repeated sequences of the dances show how they wail and present the possessions of the deceased. While they are still dancing, a Himou begins ... between Heshiwarehima, a nephew of the deceased, and Yoreshiawa, the cheftian of the Hapokashitha group. Subsequently the bones of the deceased are crushed amid the wailing of the mourning group, the bone ashes sieved and part of them mixed in the banana soup and drunk by the mourning guests.

    Abstract: Two Yanomami-shamanes under the influence of their local drug conjure up the spirits for help while chanting and dancing. Both then treat a family member. The first one cures his wife and the second his little daughter. Part of the treatment consists of grubbing firmly with both palms along the body of the patient. After each "massage", the hands are brought together in a grasping movement. The evil is symbolically removed and thrown away.

All the necessary apicultural operations throughout the year can be experienced on one of the last remaining major skep bee farms in the North German heathlands and on the migration stands in the Lüneburg Heath and Alte Land. The meticulous documentation on swarm apiculture, filmed between 1978 and 1983, is not only of interest to beekeepers, apiculturists and apiologists but is also of value to regional geographers and ethnologists.

Verschiedene Pflanzer und Vertreter des Tabakpflanzerverbandes äußern sich darüber hinaus zur Situation des Tabakanbaus in der DDR im Vergleich zu den heutigen Bedingungen, zu Fragen der Selbstorganisation und zur Zukunft des Tabakanbaus in der Uckermark.
    Abstract: The film documents the tobacco season of 1993/94 from the planting of the tobacco through the harvest and sale until the sowing for the next season - using some small planters from the villages around Schwedt on the Oder and a large farm, the former Agricultural Co-operative in Vierraden in an exemplary manner. It describes the transformation in the technical and agricultural fields (e.g. oven drying, selection of varieties). Different planters and representatives of the Tobacco Grower's Association discuss the situation of tobacco planting in the GDR compared to current conditions and answer questions on their self-organisation and on the future of tobacco cultivation in the Uckermark.

    Abstract: Das Scheibenschlagen, das am 1. Sonntag nach Fastnacht durchgeführt wird, liegt in den Händen der schulpflichtigen oder schulentlassenen Jugend. Die Burschen stecken eine Holzscheibe auf einen Schwingstock, halten sie ins Feuer und schleudern die glühende Scheibe mit einem Spruch ins Tal. Das Scheibenschlagen an zwei verschiedenen Orten zeigt die mögliche Variationsbreite an. In einem Dorf sind die Jungen unter sich, trinken reichlich Alkohol, der Brauch gestaltet sich hier "freidynamisch". Im anderen Dorf wird die "pflegerische Gestaltung" schon durch die Uniformierung der Kleider sichtbar. Die anwesenden Mädchen tragen im Chor die Sprüche vor, während die Burschen die Scheiben schlagen. Hier deutet sich Vereinswesen an. Jugendliche Teilnehmer, aber auch ältere Personen äußern sich zum Brauchverlauf von früher und jetzt.

Karfreitags- und Auferstehungsprozession zeigen die Volksfrömmigkeit, eine Hochzeitsfeier und ein Wirtshausbesuch das Dorfleben mit deutschen Liedern, Musik und Tanz. Die Frage nach der Zukunft findet neben einer vorsichtigen Tourismusorientierung ihre Antwort aus dem Munde eines Bewohners: "Wenn sie bleiben und zusammenhalten...".

    Abstract: Palmprozessionen sind im Schwarzwald seit dem 13./14. Jh. bekannt. In Gengenbach werden für den Palmsonntag auch große, bis zu 14 m lange Palmstangen hergestellt. Eine Fichtenstange wird im oberen Teil mit Querstäben versehen, mit Immergrünzweigen (Buchsbaum, Lebensbaum, Stechpalme) und mit Perlenschnüren geschmückt. Die Perlenschnüre werden aus roten Stechpalmenbeeren (Ilex) hergestellt. In tagelanger, familiärer Gemeinschaftsarbeit werden sie auf Fäden aufgezogen. Am Morgen des Palmsonntags werden die langen Palmstangen mit Fahrrädern zur Kirche transportiert und außen an die Kirche gelehnt. Hier werden sie auch vom Priester geweiht. Nach der Weihe und dem Rücktransport werden sie am Haus aufgestellt und befestigt.
    Abstract: Palm processions have been held in the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) since the 13th - 14th century. In Gengenbach palm leaves up to 14 m length are made for Palm Sunday. A pine pole is cut so that evergreen branches can be attached, they are decorated with strings of pearls made from red Ilex berries. The palms are transported to the church on bicycles and leant up against the outside walls, where they are blessed by the priest, then returned to be attached to the maker's house.

    Abstract: Der Film erzählt die Geschichte eines Reisenden, der nach einiger Zeit wieder in die Lausitz kommt und in der Nähe von Spremberg auf eine verwaiste Landschaft stößt, die noch beim letzten Besuch ein idyllisch gelegenes Dorf mit Namen Wolkenberg (sorbisch: Klensnic) beherbergte. Er möchte erfahren, was aus den Dorfbewohnern geworden ist, wo und ob sie eine neue Heimat gefunden haben, wie und ob sie weiterhin ihre ehemals sorbische Identität bewahren konnten. Der Reisende macht sich auf den Weg, Spuren des Dorfes bzw. seiner Bewohner wiederzufinden. Die Suche führt ihn durch zwei unterschiedlich stark vom Braunkohleabbau betroffene Orte nach Spremberg, wohin es die meisten Wolkenberger verschlagen hat. Auf seinem Weg erhält der Reisende Einblicke in die sorbische Kultur und ihren Wandel im Prozeß der Industrialisierung.
    Abstract: The film tells the story of a traveller who returns to Lusatia to find an evacuated landscape near Spremberg where the small idyllic village Wolkenberg used to be. He wants to find out what happened to the village residents, if and where they found a new home, if they still kept heir Sorbian identity. The traveller looks to find the traces of the village and its residents. His search leads him through two villages to Spremberg which are affected by opencast mining to a different degree. On his way the traveller learns about Sorbian culture and its changes in the process of industrialization.

Sie reden mehr in der Babysprache auf den Säugling ein und sind stärker auf ihr Subjekt der Betreuung ausgerichtet als die Buben, die weniger säuglingsfokussiert und mehr der übrigen Umwelt zugewandt bleiben. Buben zeigen weniger orale Zärtlichkeit (Küssen) und gehen eher sportlich mit kleinen Kindern um. Beim Trösten von Säuglingen stellen sie sich ungeschickter an als Mädchen. Beide Geschlechter verfügen aber über das gleiche Repertoire fürsorglicher Vergleichsweisen. Der Film belegt das für den Menschen typische Vorherrschen der Gesicht-zu-Gesicht-Orientierung bei zärtlicher Interaktion.
    Abstract: Boys and girls looking after babies and toddlers. They talk to them, play with them, tease and cuddle them. Girls are more spontaneous and affectionate, they use babytalk and are stuck closer to the suckling than boys who are more attentive to the world around. Boys don't give so much oral tenderness (kisses) and treat toddlers a little rougher, being more awkward in comforting. Both, boys and girls, show the same repertoire of caring behaviour. The film documents the typical face-to-face orientation in affectionate interaction.

    Abstract: In Bisalhaes, einem Dorf in Nord-Portugal, wird schwarze Töpferei, vor allem Schüsseln und runde Gefäße für den täglichen Gebrauch, hergestellt. Der Ton wird mit Holzhämmern zerschlagen und anschließend eingesumpft. Die Gefäße werden auf einer handbetriebenen Drehscheibe geformt. Wenn sie trocken sind, werden sie mit Steinen gesäubert und geglättet. In einem Grubenofen werden sie gebrannt. Langsam wird der Ofen mit Scherben, Brennmaterial und schließlich Erde und Asche geschlossen. Durch Reduktion werden die Scherben schwarz.
    Abstract: Black pottery, consisting of bowls and vessels for daily use, is made in Bisalhaes, a village in northern Portugal. Clay is prepared with hammers and turned on a hand-powered wheel. Dried pieces are cleaned with a stone and baked in an earth kiln. Reduction causes the black colouration.

    Abstract: Prof. Dr. Heinz Kirchhoff, ehemaliger Leiter der Frauenklinik der Universität Göttingen, schenkte 1987 seine Sammlung zum Thema Muttergottheiten, Fruchtbarkeitssymbole und Mutterschaft der Universität Göttingen. Als Gynäkologe hat er während seines ganzen Lebens weibliche Figuren aus verschiedenen Epochen und Ländern zusammengetragen. Er hat versucht, eine Kulturgeschichte 'der' Frau im Rahmen einer universalen Menschheitsgeschichte zu rekonstruieren. Frau Dr. Judith Schuler spricht mit Prof. Kirchhoff über sein Leben, seine Sammeltätigkeit, sein Interesse an der Gynäkologie und besonders an Darstellungen von Muttergottheiten und Fruchtbarkeitssymbolen. Prof. Kirchhoff führt durch seine Sammlung, stellt einzelne Objekte wie z. B. die Venus von Willendorf und die Kleine Rote von Mauren vor. (Vgl. Film G 165).

He tried to reconstruct a cultural history of woman. Dr. Judith Schuler talks with Prof. Kirchhoff about his life, his collection, interest in gynaecology and history.     Abstract: Wie bei anderen ostafrikanischen Viehzüchtern hängt auch nach Auffassung der Hamar das Glück eines Mannes vom Schicksal seines Lieblingsochsen ab. Um seinen Ochsen zu lobpreisen, singt ein Hamar bei Tanzfesten stets ein selbstkomponiertes Lied über ihn. Im Film erläutert Choke, ein Hamar-Mann, die Liedinhalte, und Gardu, eine Hamar-Frau, die Choreographie der Tänze.
    Abstract: As among other East African pastoralists, in Hamar the good fortune of a man, his family and his herds is thought to be determined by the fate of his favorite ox. To glorify his ox, a man composes a special song and sings it whenever he attends a dance. Prominent in the film are Choke, a Hamar man, who provides insight into the meaning of the songs, and Gardu, a Hamar woman, who explains the choreography of the dances.

    Abstract: Am "Peterlestag" (22. Febr.) ziehen die Kinder von Oberentersbach von Haus zu Haus. Der Segensspruch, den sie aufsagen, ist ein Bannspruch gegen Schlangen und Ungeziefer. Zum Brauch äußern sich verschiedene Gewährsleute. Nach Bildbeispielen zum Legendenmotiv der Schlangenvertreibung durch die Heiligen der Bekehrungszeit wird der Storchentag in Haslach dargestellt. Unter Anleitung des "Storchenvaters" führen die Kinder zur Erinnerung an die Störche, die Haslach von einer Ungezieferplage befreiten, einen Heischeumzug durch.
    Abstract: On St Peters Day (Peterlestag - 22nd Feb) the children of Oberentersbach go from house to house with a chant against snakes and sundry pests. Pictures of the St Peter legend include the storks nest in Haslach. Led by a "stork father" the children's procession focusses on the stork which is supposed to have freed Haslach from snakes and other pests.

Der glimmende Schwamm wird in die Häuser getragen, wo jeweils ein abgeschnittenes Stück ins Herdfeuer gelegt wird. Die Kinder erhalten in den Häusern Geld für das Feuertragen. Erwachsene - auch der Ortsgeistliche - äußern sich zum Brauch und runden damit die Brauchdokumentation ab.
    Abstract: After mass on Easter Sunday a fire is lit in front of the church of St. Peter. Schoolboys have collected and dried tree-fungi throughout the year. Now those fungi are arranged on a wire and held into the fire until they smolder, whereupon they are carried to the village houses and used to light the kitchen fire. The owner gives a present of money. Villagers, including the priest, comment on the custom.

    Abstract: U-Wei Bin Haji Saari based The Arsonist (1995) on William Faulkner's short story Barn Burning, transposing it from the Deep South to Malaysia. The filmmaker stays true to its core, but depicts the position of a Javanese man who has married a Malaysian woman, and is continually in a state of rebellion. His family is isolated from the community, and their life is continually disrupted. They are often reduced to camping out in the open with their goats. His middle son admires his courage, but asks himself if his honor demands him to stop his father from ruining himself and their family. The movie premiered at the Singapore International Film Festival, and went on to be the most honored Malaysian film in history, selected in Cannes, and winning the Grand Prize (Best International Film) at the Brussels Film Festival.     Abstract: Adapted from the novel Black Steed by Zhang Chengzhi (who spent four years during the Chinese Cultural Revolution with an Inner Mongolian family), A Mongolian Tale begins with two children being raised by Nai Nai, a wise grandmother, in the peaceful purity of childhood and the Mongolian steppes. Xie Fei's storytelling is simple and resonates with dignity. The spacious, traditional world of the steppe people is an idyllic landscape that seems timeless. Yet this is no fairytale but the story of childhood sweethearts separated by a changing world. Beiyinbulog, a boy whose father has left him to be raised by Nai Nai, has to leave Somiya, her shepherd grandmother's helper, when his father summons him to train in veterinary science in the city. When he returns for her as a folksinger, three years later, he finds her circumstances radically changed. As adults the two find their true destinies and the hand that fate has dealt. How do we redeem our idyllic dreams dashed by realities? Can love and acceptance be found despite betrayal and loss? Beiyinbulog is played by Tengger, a Mongolian-born pop singer and composer who composed the film's haunting, nostalgic score. His songs in the film capture the future for the children of the Mongolian steppes and the virtuous legacy of their homeland - 'the vast and boundless grasslands are the cradle I was reared in.'     Abstract: Literally translated, the title means 'The Moon Pierced by Wild Grass,' and the film tells the story of the relationship between an aged traditional song teacher named Waluyo, his folk music disciple Ilalang (who has to cope with memories of his abusive father) and the lovely dancer Bulan, who Ilalang has loved for a long time. The feature is set in Solo, where the vestiges of feudal Javanese culture can still be found, and gamelan music is heard throughout. It is an intensely emotional meditation upon the relationship between the generations and the role of music in the search for recovery from a traumatic past and for identity in an uncertain present. Director Garin Nugroho, who has described himself as 'a Javanese living amidst multiculturalism,' and who celebrates Indonesian cultural diversity in such films as A Poet, here explores Javanese culture. He sees this film as 'encompassing at the same time refinement and cruelty, softness and tyranny, and a beauty based on feudalism.'     Abstract: Set in a rice-growing village in Vietnam, this is a tale of crossroads where stories flow together like small rivers of sorrow. 17-year-old Nham has left school to care for his widowed mother, his little sister Minh, and his sister-in-law Ngu. Ngu, whose husband left to work in a coal mine five years ago and has only come home twice for a few days, lives in daily sadness and with a deep longing for him and a complete life. Nham and his family are visited by Quyen, who has come from America to revisit the village where she was raised by her aunt, Nham's relative. Quyen shares her nostalgia for her childhood with Nham as she remembers the places and the life she left before leaving her bad marriage.     Abstract: "Nadelbindung" ist eine weitverbreitete frühgeschichtlich-mittelalterliche Schlingennähtechnik zur Herstellung von Fäustlingen, Strümpfen, Kappen und ähnlichen Erzeugnissen. Sie ist heute nur noch in Skandinavien bekannt. Aber auch der 90jährige Altbauer A. Meyer, der diese Technik von seinem 1820 geborenen Großvater gelernt hatte, beherrschte sie noch. So entstand ein Film, in dem gezeigt wird, wie ein Handschuh aus Wollgarn in Nadelbindung angefertigt wird.
    Abstract: Looped Needle-netting Technique "Nadelbindung" was an extensively used in the production of mittens, socks caps etc in the early middle ages. Today this technique is only known in scandinavia. The 90 year-old A. Meyer learnt this technique from his grandfather (born 1820) and demonstrates the making of a mitten using woollen yarn and looped needle-netting technique.

Part of the public activities of the secret society Kwifon is the appearance of the Agah mask. In its presence a goat is sacrified.     Abstract: Heringszäune sind große, aus Buschholz gebaute Reusenanlagen zum Fang von Heringen, die im Frühjahr zum Laichen flußaufwärts ziehen. In der Schlei, einem 30 km langen, fjordartigen Gewässer, gab es im Mittelalter über 60 Heringszäune. Heute ist nur noch einer bei Kappeln erhalten. Der Film zeigt den Bau dieses Zaunes anstelle eines älteren zerstörten und das Abfischen der Heringe.
    Abstract: Herring weirs are large permeable dams made from young branches to catch herring when they migrate upriver in spring. The Schlei is a 30 km long creek where, in the middle ages, over 60 weirs were placed. The film shows the replacement of a damaged fence in the single remaining weir at Kappeln as well as the method of herring fishing.

    Abstract: Für den Fronleichnamstag wird der Prozessionsweg in der Straßenmitte mit Blumenschmuck bedeckt. Verschiedene Gruppen beteiligen sich an der Durchführung. Blumen, Gräser und Zweige werden gesammelt und zu Bildern gestaltet. Am Morgen des Festtages werden zu den ausgelegten Bildern mit Hilfe von Schablonen weitere Blumenteppiche auf der Straße angefertigt und hinzugefügt. Während der Prozession schreitet nur der Priester mit der Monstranz über die Blumen, die anderen Teilnehmer betreten die Blumenteppiche nicht. Nach Darstellung der Zeremonie an einer Station zeigt der Film den Einzug in die Kirche und den feierlichen Abschluß.
    Abstract: On Corpus Christi the path the procession takes through the middle of the town is strewn with flowers. Various local groups are involved. Flowers, grass and branches are collected and arranged into motives. On the morning further motives are layed out using templates. Only the priest with the monstrance walks on the carpet of flowers. The film also shows the entry of the procession into the church and the culmination of the ceremony.

    Abstract: In dem Überschwemmungsgebiet der Theiß - auf einer Länge von ungefähr 100 Kilometern - in der großen ungarischen Tiefebene lebten in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten mehrere Roma-Gemeinschaften auch davon, daß sie aus den Bäumen des Waldes Holztröge, Werkzeuge, ja sogar Einbäume schnitzten. In dem Gebiet von Poroszló fällen sie Pappeln und stellen aus ihnen Tröge her, in Tiszafüred Holzlöffel. Sie arbeiten mit Zimmermannswerkzeugen. In ihren Arbeiten vermischen sich die Kunstgriffe des Holzhandwerks von professionellen Handwerkern und von Bastlern.
    Abstract: In the flood area of the Theiss - at a length of about 100 kilometres - in the Great Plain of Hungary several Rroma groups, in the past decades, earned their living also by making throughs, tools, even dugouts, from tree trunks. In the region Poroszló they cut down poplars in the forest and hollow out troughs, at Tiszafüred they carve ladles. They use carpenter's tools. Their techniques are a mixture of professional and amateur methods.

Anschließend führen Medizinmänner öffentlich das Medizinritual "Kefuh Samba" durch.
    Abstract: The first and most important of the annual feasts in Oku commemorating the deceased is the ceremony organized by the Royal Palace. During the final part of the one-week-ceremonies the influential military societies have their public appearances. Among them is Samba, whose war-mask is accompanied by the "wife of Samba". After this medicine men carry out the medicine ritual "Kefuh Samba" in front of the spectators.

Den umfangreichsten Teil des Festes nehmen die öffentlichen Tanzauftritte der Maskengesellschaften ein. Nachdem der Chiamfa-Gesellschaft vom König ein Huhn übergeben wurde, tanzen, begleitet von gruppeneigenen Musikinstrumenten, die Masken von Chiamfa, Nkumki, Subi aus Jikijem und Nsum.

The largest part of the feast consists of the dances of the mask societies. After the king has presented a chicken to the Chiamfa Society, the following societies have their appearances together with their own music groups: Chiamfa, Nkumki, Subi from Jikijem, and Nsum.

    Abstract: Auch in Kulturen, in denen Puppen nicht kommerziell hergestellt oder von den Eltern den Kindern angeboten werden, spielen Mädchen gerne mit Puppen. Verschiedene Gegenstände dienen ihnen als Puppenersatz, und oft stellen sie kleine Püppchen selbst her. Der Film stellt Kleinkinder und Mädchen der Himba beim Puppenspiel vor. Die ersten Einstellungen zeigen zwei kleine Mädchen, die eine Sandale als Puppenersatz auf dem Rücken herumtragen. Dann sieht man Mädchen, die Puppen aus Holzstückchen herstellen, sie bekleiden und betreuen. Sie überlassen sie Kleinkindern zum Spielen und helfen dabei, eine Puppe zum Stillen anzulegen.
    Abstract: Even in cultures in which dolls are not commercially manufactured or offered by the children's parents, girls like to play with dolls. Different objects serve as substitutes for dolls, and they often make small dolls themselves. The film presents small Himba children and girls playing with dolls. The first takes show two small girls who are carrying a sandal on their backs as a substitute for a doll. One subsequently sees girls making dolls from pieces of wood; they dress them and care for them. They let small children play with them and help them give the doll their breasts for nursing.

    Abstract: Eintanz der Gäste mit Selbstdarstellung und mit freundlichen Appellen an mittanzende Frauen und Kinder. Die jungen Männer tanzen zunächst einzeln und stellen sich dabei den Familien der Gastgeber singend und tanzend vor. Zuletzt tanzen alle Gäste, Männer, Frauen und Kinder eine Runde. Die Frauen verteilen sich auf die mit ihnen befreundeten Familien, die Männer stellen sich im Zentrum des Shabonos auf. Der Häuptling wirkt an der Verteilung der Gäste auf die verschiedenen Familien der Gastgeber mit. Es folgt die Dokumentation eines im Rahmen dieses Festes am Abend stattgefundenen Kontraktgesanges (Himou) zwischen einem Besucher und dem Häuptling der Patanoetheri. Abgang am nächsten Morgen.
    Abstract: Display dance of the guests with image promotion and with friendly appeals on women and children who are also dancing.
