Abstract: "Music theory's presence in ethnomusicology comes from the socialization and theorizing of participants in the world's musical practices and of ethnomusicologists themselves. Results of processes of theorizing focused on musical activity differ greatly in scope, make-up, and uses. During the 1960s and 70s ethnomusicologists who formed relationships with music-makers and ritual specialists attempted to interpret their understandings of musical actions. Subsequently ethnomusicologists have studied roles of explicit and implicit theory in communication of musical knowledge, with attention to aural learning and relevant techniques of the body. They have observed the production of music theory in institutions of modern nation-states and have sought out groups and individuals whose theorizing is not constrained by projects of existing institutions. They are assessing the ways in which musical terminologies in diverse languages can be related to general concepts without imposing assumptions of one approach to music theory on all others. That exercise is increasingly recognized as a necessary effort of decolonization: the heritage of ethnomusicology encompasses all the world's music-theoretical practices, and no formulation of Western music theory should be used as a standard against which to judge other ways of theorizing and making use of the results. The best future for ethnomusicological engagement with music theory would expand the situations and media of communication along with the topics and viewpoints in play. This book reviews existing work on music theory by ethnomusicologists and others, highlighting potentially productive insights that could inspire and guide future work"

Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes zeigen, dass dieses Phänomen der pluralen Gesellschaft damit exemplarisch für die Ambivalenzen der Moderne stehen kann

Abstract: In 1933, John A. Lomax and his son Alan set out as emissaries for the Library of Congress to record the folksong of the "American Negro" in several southern African American prisons. Listening to the Lomax Archive: The Sonic Rhetorics of African American Folksong in the 1930s asks how the Lomaxes' field recordings--including their prison recordings and a long-form oral history of jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton--contributed to a new mythology of Americana for a nation in the midst of financial, social, and identity crises. Stone argues that folksongs communicate complex historical experiences in a seemingly simple package, and can thus be a key element--a sonic rhetoric--for interpreting the ebb and flow of cultural ideals within contemporary historical moments. He contends that the Lomaxes, aware of the power of folk music, used the folksongs they collected to increase national understanding of and agency for the subjects of their recordings even as they used the recordings to advance their own careers. Listening to the Lomax Archive gives readers the opportunity to listen in on these seemingly contradictory dualities, demonstrating that they are crucial to the ways that we remember and write about the subjects of the Lomaxes' archive and other repositories of historicized sound. Abstract: "This book discusses how musicians from Bahia, an emblematic African diasporic location in northeastern Brazil, think about, discuss, compose, rehearse, perform, and stage music inspired by what they perceive to be their own African ancestry. It argues that these musicians assert Afro-Brazilian identities and connect to the African continent and other diasporic places by creatively engaging essentialized notions about African music and culture: instead of mechanically reproducing these tropes, they emphasize them or downplay them. The book theorizes these preconceived notions about African music, culture, and performance as tropes of Africanness, emphasizing that they exist in two interrelated realms: as essentialist ideas in discourse and as concrete practices and sounds. Six commonly encountered tropes of African music are analyzed: the notions that its most important parameter is rhythm and that it is dominated by percussion; that it is meant to be danced to or deeply embodied rather than intellectualized; that it always touches on the sacred; that it is spontaneous and improvisatory; and that it reflects communalism rather than individualism. Through four case studies from Bahia (a jazz big band called Orkestra Rumpilezz, a symphony orchestra called the Orquestra Afrosinfônica, and two berimbau orchestras led by capoeira practitioners), the book demonstrates the nuances of musical creation in the African diaspora, acknowledging the genuine impact that essentialisms have on Bahian music while showing that they may not be an essential part of the musicians' African roots"--

Abstract: By the end of the Second World War, Germany was in ruins and its Jewish population so gravely diminished that a rich cultural life seemed unthinkable. And yet, as surviving Jews returned from hiding, the camps, and their exiles abroad, so did their music. Transcending Dystopia tells the story of the remarkable revival of Jewish musical activity that developed in postwar Germany against all odds. Author Tina Frühauf provides a kaleidoscopic panorama ofmusical practices in worship and social life across the country to illuminate how music contributed to transitions and transformations within and beyond Jewish communities in the aftermath of the Holocaust.Drawing on newly unearthed sources from archives and private collections, this book covers a wide spectrum of musical activity-from its role in commemorations and community events to synagogue concerts and its presence on the radio-across the divided Germany until the Fall of the Wall in 1989. Frühauf's use of mobility as a conceptual framework reveals the myriad ways in which the reemergence of Jewish music in Germany was shaped by cultural transfer and exchange that often relied on thecirculation of musicians, their ideas, and practices within and between communities. By illuminating the centrality of mobility to Jewish experiences and highlighting how postwar Jewish musical practices in Germany were defined by politics that reached across national borders to the United States andIsrael, this pioneering study makes a major contribution to our understanding of Jewish life and culture in a transnational context

Abstract: A partir d'une recherche partagée entre les scènes européennes et celles du désert de Tombouctou au Mali, ma thèse questionne les dimensions mondialisées du label « musique touarègue ». De 2006 à 2012 j'ai étudié les modalités de la fabrication de ce label dans le cadre du réseau marchand de la World Music. Ceci m'a amenée à décrire les scènes sur lesquelles il est à l'affiche, à décrypter les opérations de manipulation technique et technologique de ses sons, à identifier les formes d'adaptation au format du « concert », à saisir les négociations nécessaires pour créer l'image d'un « retour aux sources », à réfléchir aux modalités de légitimation et de revendication d'une spécificité culturelle « touarègue » au sein d'un circuit musical interconnecté et global. De 2008 à 2012 j'ai élargi mon terrain au Mali, mettant la circulation des pratiques et des imaginaires liés à la World Music au prisme d'un festival qui se tenait dans la région de Tombouctou. La flexibilité des notions d' « authenticité » et de « tradition » mobilisées par les acteurs qui ont participé à ce festival m'a encouragée à saisir l'élaboration de ce modèle qu'est la « culture nomade » à travers le miroir de ses recompositions culturelles et touristiques et de ses branchements nationaux et internationaux, dans un contexte politique particulièrement conflictuel. De l'analyse d'un festival à celle d'une chanson, des trajectoires des musiciens à celles des stéréotypes et des imaginaires collectifs, ma thèse a ainsi contribué à illustrer la complexité des enjeux de singularisation et d'altérité qui fabriquent l'espace mondialisé d'une World Music et à relever les tensions entre les projets de société qui s'y reflètent.

Abstract: Based on a double ethnography of European stages and those in the desert around Timbuktu in Mali, my dissertation addresses the globalized aspects of the "Tuareg music" label. I begin by describing the trajectories of groups who, since the mid-1990s, have been playing on international stages, with particular attention to how they interact with the professionals who bring them into the globalized music market. This leads me to analyze how festivals showcase these groups, how this music is recorded in studios, and the media discourse surrounding it, all the while focusing on what is at stake for a type of music that is produced and consumed in different parts of the world, but which is seen as a unique object, rooted in the desert "source". I then use a festival held in the Malian Sahara as a lens to look at the circulation of practices and images associated with world music. This festival provides its own model of "desert cultures" for national and international networks, defying the difficult political and security context. Via the analysis of a festival and a song, and that of musicians' career trajectories and the paths of collective imaginaries, my study clarifies the patrimonialization processes, the cultural and touristic shifts, and the identity and political demands that come to the fore when "Tuareg music" is pushed onto the stage of musical globalization. This serves to illustrate the complexity of the claims of singularity and atherness created by the globalized space of world music, thus revealing the tensions between the societal ideals reflected in it.

Abstract: "William T. Sites details the life of visionary musician Sun Ra in Chicago, from 1946 until 1961. Sun Ra's South Side was a site of unorthodox religious and cultural activism where Afrocentric philosophies flourished, storefront prophets sold "dream-book bibles," and Elijah Muhammad was building the Nation of Islam. It was also an unruly musical crossroads where styles circulated and mashed together in clubs and community dancehalls. Sun Ra drew from a vast array of intellectual sources (radical nationalism, antinomian Christianity, black mythology, and science fiction) and from multiple musical traditions (swing, jazz, blues, Latin dance music, "space-age pop," and other exotica) to promulgate visions of the city that did not conform to the orthodoxies of metropolitan elites, black or white
