Abstract: "Over the past several decades, China has undergone the largest process of urbanization in human history. While this process has been ongoing for more than the past half-century, the rapid growth of Chinese cities reached new heights in the 2010s. In 2011, China's urbanization rate passed 50%. Just two years later, China's urbanization rate hit 53%, surpassing the world average, and today, over 60% of China's population lives in urban areas. While it is well known that this growth has been driven at least partly by policy, the demands of the ever-increasing urban population has come to be a significant driver of policy in China in the twenty-first century. Reinventing the Chinese City unpacks new paradigms of Chinese urban planning and development in that period of escalating growth since 2010. Richard Hu focuses on three urban phenomena-'green revolution', 'smart city movement', and 'great innovation leap forward'-that are spreading throughout and becoming increasingly influential in China. He draws upon case studies of Beijing, Hangzhou, and Hefei to analyze the enabling factors, rationales, and effects of these phenomena, and to examine the paradoxes that they engender. Xiong'an, a new experimental city, offers an additional opportunity to critically explore the idealized version of the urban future in China. Hu also investigates the recent changes in Hong Kong-the most 'un-Chinese' Chinese city-after the 2019 social movement: the city is being reoriented towards its 'second return' under 'one country two systems', which is at a critical mid-point of its 50-year tenure. By analyzing the trajectory of these cities, Hu provides a careful accounting of the theory that has dominated urban policy in China since 2010, and is likely to shape the trajectory of Chinese urban planning and development in the coming decades.""--

Abstract: Dickson D. Despommier proposes a visionary yet achievable plan for creating a new, self-sustaining urban landscape.
Abstract: Intro -- Table of Contents -- List of Figures and Tables -- Foreword, by Mitchell Joachim -- Preface -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1. Pillar One: Carbon Storage -- 2. Abstract: "Dickson Despommier, Emeritus Professor at Columbia, pioneered the concept of vertical farming--i.e. growing crops inside tall buildings--which could become a solution to food scarcity and food insecurity. When his previous book THE VERTICAL FARM was first published by Thomas Dunne/St. Martin's Press in 2010, no such farms existed; now hundreds of them, comprising a multi-billion-dollar industry, can be found all over the world. Now, with his new book, THE NEW CITY, Despommier presents us with a bold new vision of our urban future, if only we are willing to listen to what nature can teach us about the best way to grow food, store carbon, harvest rainwater, and renew energy for the cities of the future. Drawing on a unique concept called "biomimicry," Despommier's book will be both a synthesis of how following principles of nature can help us create a new built environment for cities in which we can thrive, as well as a courageous call to action on how we can achieve it"--

Abstract: Einleitung -- Familie als Bildungsort – Bildungsbedeutsamkeit des Familien[1]alltag -- Alltag und Familienalltag -- Methode: Durchführung eines systematischen Reviews -- Ergebnisse -- Diskussion und Fazit.

Abstract: "This book contains seven chapters that detail the future of smart cities. Chapter One focuses mainly on the practical barriers encountered by the author during the design and implementation of three Smart City projects as a project management consultants (PMC) team leader. Chapter Two argues for a greater focus on enabling and enhancing the growth of third places within smart city(ies), through closer business to municipal government collaboration to ensure that these human aspects are taken into consideration by urban planners. Chapter Three argues that current technocentric approach(es) to smart city(ies) design and implementation may create unforeseen negative externalities arising from inequitable access to the promises of digitisation. Chapter Four discusses current developments and future research trends in smart technology(ies) within urban environment(s). Chapter Five includes insights from a robust literature review about inclusive transformation and an empirical study on inclusiveness in 21 smart cities in India along with a deeper qualitative study of Nagpur smart city. Chapter Six establishes that the formation and development of City Smart potential depends on a number of conditions and factors, which the authors divide into external and internal ones. Lastly, Chapter Seven provides a generalization of existing approaches to the definition of design and determinants of the smart awareness development among the youth of Ukraine, and describes the current state of perception of the Smart City Concept"--

Abstract: "This sharply argued book posits that urban revitalization-making 'better' city living spaces from those that have been neglected due to racist city planning and divestment-is a code word for fraught, state-managed gentrification. Vanessa A. Rosa examines the revitalization of two Toronto public housing projects, Regent Park and Lawrence Heights, and uses this evidence to analyze the challenges of racial inequality and segregation at the heart of housing systems in many cities worldwide. Instead of promoting safety and belonging, Rosa argues that revitalization too often creates more intense exclusion. But the story of these housing projects also reveals how residents pushed back on the ideals of revitalization touted by city officials and policymakers. Rosa explores urban revitalization as a window to investigate broader questions about social regulation and the ways that racism, classism, and dynamics of inclusion/exclusion are foundational to liberal democratic societies, particularly as scholars continue to debate the politics of gentrification at the local level and the politics of integration and multiculturalism at the national level"--

Abstract: This book focuses on the health, economic, and justice impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on racial equity. It does not simply document the problems made worse by the pandemic, but it provides historical context for issues that rose to the surface in new ways, the existing inequities revealed during COVID-19, and policy responses to those issues

Abstract: By examining the legal treatment of visibly Muslim women, Falguni Sheth uncovers the hidden dynamics of racialized division that have inhabited and bolstered liberal legal neutrality from its inception. Her work studies the experiences of, and responses to, Muslim women of color and Black Muslim women, especially where these women have attempted to use US courts to contest their unfair treatment. Evaluating a wide range of judicial encounters, Unruly Women uncovers a pattern of racialized exclusion from liberal protections. Moreover, it exposes the distinctive ways that courts and other liberal institutions have demanded the self-transformation of individuals who appear unsuited for inclusion into the liberal polity.

Abstract: "In the United States, sex education is more than just an uncomfortable rite of passage, it's an amorphous curriculum that varies widely based on the politics, experience, resources, and biases of the people teaching it. Most often, it's a train wreck, overemphasizing or underemphasizing STIs, teen pregnancy, abstinence, and consent. In Touchy Subject, philosopher Lauren Bialystok and historian Lisa M. F. Andersen make the case for thoughtful sex education, explaining why it's worth fighting for and which kind most deserves our fight, despite all the inconveniences and compromises along the way. They argue that democratic and humanistic aims can be used to provide the tools to reason about the content and form of sex education. In practice, this amounts to a curriculum that meets what are currently considered highly comprehensive standards, incorporates ethics and civics education, and substantially modifies some aspects of teacher training and school design; it also assigns different responsibilities to different actors inside and outside schools, and it responds to the salient features of young people's evolving worlds, including the inequities that put some students at much higher risk of sexual harm than others. Throughout their inquiry, the authors show the reader how sex education has progressed and how the very concept of "progress" remains contestable"

Abstract: In Sissy Insurgencies Marlon B. Ross focuses on the figure of the sissy in order to rethink how Americans have imagined, articulated, and negotiated manhood and boyhood from the 1880s to the present. Rather than collapsing sissiness into homosexuality, Ross shows how sissiness constitutes a historically fluid range of gender practices that are expressed as a physical manifestation, discursive epithet, social identity, and political phenomenon. He reconsiders several black leaders, intellectuals, musicians, and athletes within the context of sissiness, from Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and James Baldwin to Little Richard, Amiri Baraka, and Wilt Chamberlain. Whether examining Washington's practice of cleaning as an iteration of sissiness, Baldwin's self-fashioned sissy deportment, or sissiphobia in professional sports and black nationalism, Ross demonstrates that sissiness can be embraced and exploited to conform to American gender norms or disrupt racialized patriarchy. In this way, sissiness constitutes a central element in modern understandings of race and gender.

Abstract: "William H. Whyte's curiosity compelled him to question the status quo-whether helping to make Fortune Magazine essential reading for business leaders, warning of "groupthink" in his bestseller The Organization Man, or standing up for Jane Jacobs as she advocated for the vitality of city life and public space. This compelling biography sheds light on Whyte's bold way of thinking, ripe for rediscovery at a time when we are reshaping our communities into places of opportunity and empowerment for all citizens" -- Backcover

Abstract: Einleitung: Zwischen hier und dort -- Residenzielle Multilokalität -- Mobilität und Verkehrshandeln – theoretische Einbettung der Arbeit -- Methodisches Vorgehen -- Empirische Ergebnisse: Alltägliche Mobilität und Verkehrshandeln multilokal Wohnender -- Schlussfolgerungen und Diskussion.

Abstract: The first global history of hunger strikes as a tactic in prisons, conflicts, and protest movements. The power of the hunger strike lies in its utter simplicity. The ability to choose to forego eating is universally accessible, even to those living under conditions of maximal constraint, as in the prisons of apartheid South Africa, Israeli prisons for Palestinian prisoners, and the detention camp at Guantánamo Bay. It is a weapon of the weak, potentially open to all. By choosing to hunger strike, a prisoner wields a last-resort personal power that communicates viscerally, in a way that is undeniable--especially when broadcast over prison barricades through media and to movements outside. Refusal to Eat is the first book to compile a global history of this vital form of modern protest, the hunger strike. In this enormously ambitious but concise book, Nayan Shah observes how hunger striking stretches and recasts to turn a personal agony into a collective social agony in conflicts and contexts all around the world, laying out a remarkable number of case studies over the last century and more. From suffragettes in Britain and the US in the early twentieth century to Irish political prisoners, Bengali prisoners, and detainees at post-9/11 Guantánamo Bay; from Japanese Americans in US internment camps to conscientious objectors in the 1960s; from South Africans fighting apartheid to asylum seekers in Australia and Papua New Guinea, Shah shows the importance of context for each case and the interventions the protesters faced. The power that hunger striking unleashes is volatile, unmooring all previous resolves, certainties, and structures and forcing supporters and opponents alike to respond in new ways. It can upend prison regimens, medical ethics, power hierarchies, governments, and assumptions about gender, race, and the body's endurance. This

Abstract: Is it possible to work with sound in sociology rather than being about sound? Can there be a »sonic sociology«? Rémy Bocquillon reflects on the process-oriented character of sociology as an experimental science by including aesthetic practices of sounding and listening as constitutive for the making of sociological theory. Following new materialist and speculative philosophies, this study is thus a combination of sociological theory, philosophical thought and aesthetic practices, not understood as discrete fields of inquiry, but co-constituting each other. It also features an audio chapter, »feeding-back« the sonic experimentations at the core of the research in new and engaging ways.
