    Kurzfassung: The communal prayer at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, is more festive than a normal Friday prayer. It is embellished with various formalized speeches and songs, which are the background for related recitations by the precensor (imam), muezzin (mü'ezzin = chanter of the call to prayer), and the congregatin. The individual parts of the ritual are indicated by the alternation of the recitations between the imam and the muezzin, and the imam's changing his position appropriately. The imam leads the prayer (rek'a) from in front of the prayer niche (mihrab), but the recitations are performed from the two pulpits.

    Kurzfassung: Sheik Hajdar Murteza guides the visitor through his cloister (tekye) and offers some comments. Next he describes his own life and the history of the Tekye. Then he shows the various rooms: the internment room with the sarcophagi of Rufâ'îye Sheiks, the tombstones in the garden, and, finally, the sanctuary (semâ'-châne)and the various relics found there (weapon, staffs). As a substitute for a Zikr the Sheik, dressed in his vestments, demonstrates how the various ritual items are used in the Zikr.

    Kurzfassung: The film shows the arrival of the wedding-guests, accompanied by the music of two kettle-drums and two clarinets. The guests hand over wedding-presents. The girls are continuously playing on the def (a kind of small tambourine, beaten with small metallic plates), while the women prepare the meal. The wedding-guests then walk in a procession to the village of the bride, carrying the Albanian national flag. In the village of the bride young and older wedding-guests, arranged in two different groups, perform an Albanian folk dance. The camera also catches the moment when the bride, amid tears, leaves the parental home and enters the carriage which takes her to her husband. Finally we see the bride arriving in the house of the bridegroom.

    Kurzfassung: Mitglieder der Folkloregruppe "Shota" führen zwei Volkstänze auf: 1. Frauentanz von zwei Frauen aufgeführt, von denen die eine auch singt und den Def schlägt. 2. Gruppentanz von Männern und Frauen zum Rhythmus der Trommel aufgeführt. Innerhalb dieses Tanzes zeigen zwei der Männer einen Schwerttanz.
    Kurzfassung: The film presents two Albanian folk dances from Metohija, recorded in Decani village near Pec. The first dance is performed by two women, one dancing, singing, and beating the def, the other dancing and gracefully twisting her arms, hands, and fingers. A group of men then dance to the rhythm of the drum (tupan), which beaten in the open air, produces a particularly plangent sound. During the dance two of the dancers, armed with swords, perform the war dance Kallcoja (sword dance). All the performers, men and women, wear the Albanian national costume.

    Kurzfassung: Nach einem formelhaften religiösen "Wechselgespräch" zwischen Vorbeter und Scheich erfolgt durch die Teilnehmer der eigentliche Zikr (vgl. E 1968). Eine Besonderheit des Melâmî-Zikr ist das Absingen religiöser Lieder in albanischer Sprache.
    Kurzfassung: The Zikr of the Melâmî Dervishes resembles the Zikr of the Chalvetî Dervishes (see Film E 1968) with minor differences: After a formalized religious "dialogue" between the precentor and the Sheikh the participants perform the actual Zikr. It includes the repetition of the word God (hû) along with an il- âhî (religious hymn) in Albanien. Occasionally the precentor interrupts the prayer with the recitation of religious formulare. The prayer is accompanied by rocking movements, and ends with the exclamation "Hû" (God).

    Kurzfassung: The film presents three Turkish folk dances, performed at Prizren: one sword dance performed by four men, one dance performed by six girls, with the men sitting on the ground, and one dance performed by couples. The dancers are accompanied by the Turkish folk music orchestra of Prizren, "Calgi", consisting of dulcimer, violon, clarinet, lutes, and pot-drum.

    Kurzfassung: The film presents three Albanian lyrical women's songs and one folk dance from Zur village near Prizren. The songs are sung by five girls to the accompaniment of two tambourines (def). The folk dance, called Dy mollat e kuqe (Two red apples); is performed by a boy and a girl. The name of the dance is symbolical and designates two beautiful persons, a boy and a girl. During the dance the boy and the girl enter into competition, thus expressing their mutual love.

    Kurzfassung: In an interview at the Bektâshî cloister at Djakovica Sheikh Baba Kâzim describes his adventurous life, including his political activities during the chaos of the Balkan War of 1912, the struggle for an independent Albania, and resistance to Ahmed Zogu. After 1926 he became a Bektâshî and, through a career in various cloisters in Albanien speaking areas, rose to the rank of Dede. Today he is the most important representative of the Bektâshî order in the Balkan countries.

    Kurzfassung: The film presents three Albanian urban folk songs and one piece of instrumental music, instances of Albanian folk song and folk music of Kosovo, performed in the town of Djakovica by the following singers and musicians: Qamili i Vögel (without instrument), Uke Currani (without instrument), Qazim Berisha (playing the twelve-stringed lute; sharki), Malush Ahmeti (playing an old accordion, manufactured at the beginning of the century), Hamez Bala (playing the violon), Shani Meta (playing the mandolin), and Ibrahim Tafolli (beating the tambourine; def, daire). The men are assembled in an old town house at Djakovica and wear the costume of the town.

    Kurzfassung: Am Morgen des zweiten Sonntags im Mai reiten die Teilnehmer, die eine Reliquie des hl. Gangolf mit sich führen, in feierlicher Prozession zur Gangolfskapelle. Dort erfolgt durch Geistliche die Weihe der Gangolfsquelle und der Pferde. Gegen Krankheiten reiben sich die Menschen mit Wasser ein oder trinken es.
    Kurzfassung: At Neudenau on the Jagst, on St. Gangolf's day in May, horses are decorated and ridden in a solemn procession at St. Gangolf's chapel outside the town. A relic of St. Gangolf is carried too in the procession. At the chapel clergymen bless the source of St. Gangolf, then the slowly passing horses. In illness the water of the source is also used by men: they rub their body with it and drink it.

    Kurzfassung: Am Tage des hl. Leonhard (6. Nov.) ziehen Wagen, Reiter und kleine Gruppen zu Fuß von Murnau nach der Leonhardskirche Froschhausen, wo eine Feldmesse abgehalten wird. Danach versammeln sich die Teilnehmer vor der Gastwirtschaft; hier treten auch die Goaßlschnalzer mit ihren langen Peitschen in Aktion.
    Kurzfassung: Since 1927 the St. Leonard's pilgrimage in Murnau has taken place, and it is arranged after the known pilgrimage of Bad Tölz. On the day of St. Leonard (6th November) people on carriages, on horses and others walking in small groups are moving from Murnau to the nerby church St. Leonard in Froschhausen where a camp-service is celebrated on a meadow near the church. After the mass the participants meet in front of the only inn of the village and there perform the so-called Goaßlschnalzer (men with long whips).

The first is danced in a semi-circle, the dancers holding each other by the shoulders. The movement is performed on the spot by each side. The tempo is lively. The Oblii is danced in a semi-circle. A clarinetist accompanies the dance.

The musical accompaniment is given by the parish orchester with accordion, flügel horn, bass flügel horn, clarinet and prercussion instruments.

    Kurzfassung: Das "Begraben" der Fahne erfolgt auf demselben Hügel wie das Aufrichten. Die hochgestellte Fahnenstange wird losgelassen, die Männer laufen auseinander. Beim Aufschlag der Stange kehren sie um und begrüßen sich gegenseitig, als hätten sie sich lange nicht mehr gesehen. Der Brauch endet mit dem Tanz der Kaluscharen.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the kalushar group coming from the village and climbing up a hill to conclude the traditional Whitsun rites. The cloth and the herbs are taken down from the "flag", distributed among the kalushars, the flag pole is hoisted up, and at a sign from the mutul it is let go. At that moment the men spring apart and run away in various directions. As soon as the pole hits the ground they turn round and greet each other as though they had not seen each other for a long time. The film ends with the subsequent dancing.

The Hora mare is danced in a circle. The dancers hold each others hands. The movement is to right or left on command. The tempo is moderate. The dances follow the rhythm of the melody.     Kurzfassung: Vor Sonnenaufgang gehen die Frauen auf den Friedhof, wo sie ihre Toten individuell beklagen sowie die Gräber umkreisen und beweihräuchern. Der zweite Besuch im Friedhof erfolgt nach dem Gottesdienst etwa um 11 Uhr. Auf die Gräber werden Blumen, brennende Kerzen und die Totengaben gestellt. Die Zeremonie der kollektiven Totenklage beginnt, wenn die Kirchenglocken ertönen.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the death laments in the cementery in the village Priseaca (Olt district). The first part shows the laments of the women before sunrise. The second part shows the lamentations in the morning after the church service. Some lamenting women are shown in several parts of the cementery as well as the more passive participation of some men also present at the morning lamentations.

    Kurzfassung: The bagpiper from Alunis (sub-Carpathian hill zone of Greater Walachia) plays an instrument typical of this part of the country - a bagpipe with a simple melody pipe and a 7 + 1 finger hole arrangement. From the rather slender repertory of the eighty year-old our film illustrates a rubato tune (Doina) and two dance melodies, thus showing the playing technique characteristic for the instrument. As an experiment the scale of the melody pipe is reproduced.

For at least three generations the mask has been in this village and in the same family as the "rough and tough" Djaka mask. In earlier times women were not allowed to see it. Due to modern development of the Ivory-coast, this is possible nowadays.

    Kurzfassung: The Gere (Kran) have male dancing masks and female singing masks. In contrast to the swift moving mask-dances of other tribes of the Ivory-coast, like the Baule or the Guro, the Gere mask dances are reticent. The costumes are impressive with puffy bast skirts and luxurious feather ornaments. The masks form a secret organization. They also practice jurisdiction, lead warriors into war and protect bush and river against abuse.

Vorgänge auf einem Kinderspielplatz: Federballspiel, Wettlaufen, Steinspiel, begleitet von einer Laute und einer Querflöte. 2. Stöckchentanz: von französischen Kindern übernommen; Melodie und Text stammen aus Tibet.
    Kurzfassung: The film shows the performance of two Tibetan children's dances, one of which imitates occurrences in a children's playground, the other a game with small sticks, which the Tibetan children have adopted from French children and adapted with Tibetan vocal music and dance-steps. Musical accompaniment for both dances is provided by a long-necked lute and a flute.

The musicians accompany their songs with hot rhythms of the rattle-calabash. Although the young Baule learned the Goli from a neighbouring tribe, it became their most important mask performance.

Afterwards two solo-dancers appear.

    Kurzfassung: At the end of the Yams festival, which for the northern Dan separates the old year from the new year, the masks leave the bush and come down from the mountains to the village. They dance outside the village and then move over the country to greet the government officials. On the way each mask shows for our team typical parts from their repertoire.

    Kurzfassung: Die tibetische Tanzgruppe aus Ebnat-Kappel (Schweiz) führt in Rikon Variationen eines Tanzliedes sowie einen pantomimischen Tiertanz vor der Kamera auf. Die Tänze werden von einer Bambusquerflöte, einer Langhalslaute, einer Trommel und von Becken begleitet.
    Kurzfassung: Presentation of a Tibetan dance-song, first by two women, accompanied by a bamboo flute and a long-necked lute, then by a lute-player who also dances. There follows an animal dance in pantomime, accompanied by a large drum with cymbals, and a behind-the-scences singer.

    Kurzfassung: Vor einem Elefantenzahnorchester mit Trommeln ahmt der Nachfahre eines Berufskriegers tanzend und singend verschiedene Kampfsituationen nach. Er wird von drei Frauen, einem Glockenläuter, einem Blattwedler und einem Bläser umtanzt. Von einer weiteren Frau verspottet, tanzt er lebhafter.
    Kurzfassung: For various activities, the Dan have groups of singers and musicians, whose playing is supposed to impart special qualities: strength for the bushclearers, majestic deportment for the chieftain, courage for the warrior. Here, an orchestra of seven elephant tusks and five drums incites the fighting-spirit of the village's greatest warrior, who, in dance form, demonstrates several battle situations.

The dancers are decorated with expensively colored leather dresses which are made by the neighbouring Mau, a tribe of the Mande.

    Kurzfassung: Mit einem Stöckchen schlägt der Spieler die Bogensaite des Musikbogens vor dem Mund an, während er mit einem zweiten Stöckchen die Länge des schwingenden Teils der Saite verändert und so zwei verschiedene Grundtöne hervorruft. Die Tonfolgen beinhalten Sätze der Baule-Sprache, zumeist Sprichwörter.
    Kurzfassung: The Baule, relatives of the Ashanti of Ghana, play the musical bow as many other African tribes do. The string of the bow is struck with one small stick in front of the mouth of the player while with a second small stick the length of the string is changed in order to create two different key notes. The musical bow is player for the pleasure of the musician only, since the slight overtones can not be heard by the bystanders. Only the sound-film makes it possible to hear how the player uses his mouth as a sounding board. The succession of notes means, sentences of the language of the Baule, most of them being proverbs.

    Kurzfassung: Im Dorf Afotobo singt und spielt der Wandersänger Yao auf zwei Harfen, die er auf den Knien hält, Sprichwörter und Geschichten mit symbolischer Pointe, begleitet von einem Musikanten mit zwei Rasselkörbchen und zwei weiteren mit Lärminstrumenten (Hohleisen).
    Kurzfassung: A singer of the Baule is accompanied by three musicians while accompanying himself with two harps, holding each on one knee. He sings proverbs and tropical songs. Such singers travel overland and are held in high esteem by the Baule.

    Kurzfassung: This singing mask with its beak-shaped nose, from which a black beard of monkey-hair hangs down, is found in other functions as well, e. g. with the Konor tribe as one of the highest ranking spirits in the boys's circumcision camp. In Maple village it is explained as a Tukan mask. The Tukan is the king of the birds and is supposed to have brought the oil-palm to the Dan. Therefore the Tukan is mentioned in the songs of the mask.

    Kurzfassung: The Gbagba is a dance for entertainment which is performed at festivities or for its own sake. It evolves around the figure of a bird - the Gbagba. Alternately a ballet of boys and single masks are dancing; the latter represent certain personalities and animals well known to all.

    Kurzfassung: Here we see several short theatralic scenes taken from the widespread cycle of life, death and reincarnation of Nangsa. The most important parts of the Tibetan wedding ritual are shown. Accompaniment is provided by an harmonica and a long-necked lute.

    Kurzfassung: The film shows a play, in sketch form, involving a Bringer of Good Fortune, a figure who regularly appears during important festivities and celebrations. Here, by means of a colloquy with the householder and a dog-bite scene, his appearance is elaborated into a burlesque.
