The author moves beyond traditional boundaries of Egyptological and Papyrological research by means of an innovative and interdisciplinary methodology - zigzagging back and forth between archaeological field survey, close reading of ancient texts, formal methods of Social Network Analysis (SNA) and explanatory theories and concepts borrowed from economics and other social sciences."--

Abstract: "Thousands of intact ceramic bowls and plates as well as fragments made in the medieval Byzantine empire survive to this day. Decorated with figural and non-figural imagery applied in a variety of techniques and adorned with colourful paints and glazes, the vessels can tell us much about those who owned them and those who looked at them. In addition to innumerable ceramic vessels, a handful of precious metal bowls and plates survive from the period. Together, these objects make up the art of dining in medieval Byzantium. This art of dining was effervescent, at turns irreverent and deadly serious, visually stunning and fun. It is suggestive of ways in which those viewing the objects used a quotidian and biologically necessary (f)act - that of eating - to reflect on their lives and deaths, their aspirations and their realities. This book examines the ceramic and metal vessels in terms of the information offered on the foods eaten, the foods desired and their status; the spectacle of the banquet; the relationship between word and image in medieval Byzantium; the dangers of taste; the emergence of new moral and social ideals; and the use of dining as a tool in constructing and enforcing hierarchy. This book is of appeal to scholarly and non-scholarly audiences interested in the art and material culture of the medieval period and in the social history of food and eating"--

Abstract: Terrorismus ist noch immer eines der bedrohlichsten Phänomene der heutigen Zeit. In diesem Buch werden mithilfe von Gerichtsakten vom Generalbundesanwalt beim Bundesgerichtshof in Karlsruhe die Radikalisierungsprozesse von 58 deutschen Jihadisten analysiert. Durch das umfassende Datenmaterial ist es möglich, die Wege dieser Personen von der Radikalisierung bis zum Anschluss an eine terroristische Organisation im Ausland (u.a. Islamischer Staat) sowie ausgeübte strafrechtlich relevante Handlungen zu rekonstruieren. Mithilfe einer Netzwerkanalyse wird das radikale Netzwerk untersucht, das aus Deutschland mit Jihadkämpfern im In- und Ausland verbunden gewesen ist. Dabei wird ein Augenmerk auf den Aufbau, die Funktionsweise und die Schlüsselpersonen des Netzwerks gelegt. Auch werden die unterschiedlichen Rollen und Unterstützungshandlungen der Netzwerkmitglieder in den Fokus genommen. Zusätzlich werden strafrechtlich relevante Radikalisierungs- und Mobilisierungsstrategien salafistisch-jihadistischer Prediger entschlüsselt, die weitaus tiefere Verbindungen zu terroristischen Organisationen im Ausland haben als bisher angenommen. Die Autorin Kristin Weber ist Kriminologin, Soziologin und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Bereich der Radikalisierungs-, Terrorismus- und Extremismusforschung. An der Deutschen Hochschule der Polizei in Münster-Hiltrup hat sie ihre Dissertation im Rahmen des Projektes X-Sonar "Analyse extremistischer Bestrebungen in sozialen Netzwerken", welches vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung gefördert wurde, geschrieben.

Abstract: In dieser Dissertation untersuche ich verschiedene Aspekte des Integrationsprozesses von Migranten und Flüchtlingen, insbesondere wie sich ihre Präsenz auf die Protestaktivitäten und Einstellungen von Einheimischen auswirkt. Die vier Kapitel bauen auf der bestehenden Literatur auf und zielen darauf ab, diese in mehreren Aspekten zu ergänzen. Das erste und das zweite Kapitel verbessern unser Verständnis der kausalen Auswirkungen der Bedingungen im Heimatland auf die Rückkehrabsichten und die Arbeitsmarktintegration von Migranten im Zielland sowie das Verständnis der Auswirkungen traumatischer Erfahrungen während der Flucht auf die Arbeitsmarktintegration von Flüchtlingen. Das dritte Kapitel befasst sich mit der soziokulturellen Integration von Familienmigranten in einem Land, das nicht ihre erste Wahl darstellt. Das vierte Kapitel untersucht die Auswirkungen der Anwesenheit von Ausländern auf die Protestaktivität einer bestimmten Gruppe von Einheimischen und wie sich diese Proteste auf die Besorgnis über Fremdenfeindlichkeit und Intoleranz auf nationaler Ebene auswirken. Die Ergebnisse der Dissertation sollen die politischen Entscheidungsträger über die potenziellen Nebenwirkungen der Migrationspolitik informieren und empirische Erkenntnisse liefern, die zur Verbesserung bestehender und zur besseren Gestaltung künftiger politischer Maßnahmen beitragen.

Abstract: In this PhD thesis, I look at different aspects of the integration process of migrants and refugees, and how their presence affects the protest activity and attitudes of natives. The four chapters build on and aim to extend the existing literature along several dimensions. The first and second chapters improve our understanding of the causal effect of home country conditions on migrants' return intentions and labour market outcomes at destination and of the effect of traumatizing experiences along the journey on refugees' labour market integration. The third chapter explores the socio-cultural integration of family migrants in a country that was not their primary choice, while the fourth chapter examines the effect of the presence of foreigners on the protest activity of a particular group of natives and how these protests affect worries about xenophobia and intolerance at the national level. The findings in the dissertation aim to inform policymakers on the potential side-effect of migration policies and to provide empirical evidence that help improve existing policies and better design future ones.eral dimensions.

Abstract: Diese Dissertation aus der Sparte der Reflexiven Bibliometrie erforscht die Rückwirkungen der Verwendung von quantitativen Indikatoren in der Wissenschaftsevaluation auf die Wissensproduktion und Forschungsqualität in der Astronomie. Eine qualitative Analyse der strukturellen Bedingungen der akamdeischen Astronomie anhand des Rational Choice Frameworks führen zur Beobachtung eines "Evaluation Gap" zwischen dem, was Indikatoren messen und dem, was Forscher unter Forschungsqualität verstehen. Die Analyse offenbart weiters einen Balanceakt, in dem Astronomen zwischen Publikationsdruck und Forschungsintegrität Kompromisse finden. Weiterführende quantitative Untersuchungen unter Einbezug von Organisational Culture Theories und Self-Determination Theory zeigen, dass kontrollierte Formen von Motivation zu einem erhöhten Publikationsdruck und wissenschaftlichem Fehlverhalten führen, während autonome Formen von Motivation das Gegenteil bewirken. Schließlich skizziert die Arbeit Wege zur Transformation der Forschungskultur hin zu mehr Vielfalt und Partizipation, einschließlich der Einführung offener Wissensmanagement-Infrastrukturen und kontinuierlicher, reflexiver Evaluationsprozesse.

Abstract: This dissertation from the field of Reflexive Bibliometrics, investigates the constitutive effects of utilizing quantitative metrics in research evaluation on knowledge production and research quality in astronomy. Embedded in the Rational Choice Framework to analyze the structural conditions within academic astronomy, a qualitative analysis reveals an "Evaluation Gap" between what metrics measure and researchers' perceptions of research quality. Furthermore, the analysis unveils a balancing act where astronomers navigate compromises between publication pressures and research integrity. Subsequent quantitative analyses, incorporating Organizational Culture Theories and Self-Determination Theory, demonstrate that controlled forms of motivation exacerbate publication pressure and scientific misconduct, while autonomous motivations yield contrasting effects. Lastly, the study outlines pathways towards transforming research culture towards greater diversity and participation, including the adoption of open knowledge management infrastructures and continuous, reflexive evaluation processes.

Abstract: This volume examines some of the major challenges and opportunities for Europe in the light of the intensifying US-China global strategic rivalry. Abstract: In recounting their migration journey, references to nationality pervade the narratives of Zimbabweans in South Africa. Given the challenges many migrants confront based on their nationality, this presents a seeming paradox. This qualitative interview study, conducted with Zimbabwean migrants in two areas of Cape Town—Observatory and Dunoon—aims to elucidate the nuances of national self-descriptions in a demanding environment. Identifying as Zimbabwean serves as a sanctuary and a retreat, where alternative identifications often prove transient; embracing Zimbabweanness fosters an affirmative and positive self-perception, surpassing the limitations of other collective self-descriptions. Rather than pre-emptively characterizing a nationalist demeanour, the articulation of national self-description emerges as a strategic tool to navigate experiences of hostility and discrimination, while also asserting legitimate claims to equal opportunities. In this way, nationality takes a trajectory that diverges from conventional notions of nationality (and the ones of the nation-state or citizenship) as per Northern theory, contributing to alternative conceptualizations within the framework of the Global South. About the author Johannes Kögel studied philosophy and sociology in Munich and Cape Town. He currently works as a research associate at the University of Munich (LMU München). He has conducted social research on diverse topics such as brain-computer interfaces, xenotransplantation, and migration in South Africa. .

Abstract: Der Begriff der Produktivität findet täglich Verwendung, um die eigene Leistung zu bewerten. Darin, so die These, zeigt sich ein problematisches Verhältnis zur eigenen Tätigkeit. Denn was bedeutet Produktivität? Die Autorin geht von dem antiken weiten Verständnis von Produktivität als generellem Wirkprinzip aus und zeigt, wie sich Vorstellungen in Bezug auf das, was als produktiv gilt, gewandelt haben. Heute dominiert das ökonomische Verständnis, das die Beziehung zwischen Input (hervorbringender Natur) und Output (hervorgebrachter Natur) quantifiziert. Produktiv ist der Mensch, wenn er viel schafft – und nicht, wenn er ‚sich hervorbringt‘. Die Autorin entwickelt einen neuen Produktivitätsbegriff, der die menschliche Fähigkeit zu produktiver Selbstwerdung ins Zentrum stellt. So entsteht auch ein neuer Blick auf (humanistisch) produktive Arbeit, der diese nicht an Effizienzmaximen, sondern der Beziehung des Subjekts zur Tätigkeit festmacht. Zugleich soll Systemproduktivität im Subjekt verwurzelt werden: Das (wirtschaftliche) System gilt nicht mehr als produktiv, wenn es kurzfristig Gewinne, sondern nur, wenn es langfristig Bedingungen für Individual(re)produktivität bereitstellt. Der Begriff der Produktivität wird so (wieder) als Vermittlungsbegriff fruchtbar gemacht. Die Autorin Hannah Schragmann arbeitet in einem Start-Up daran, positiven Impact auf die SDGs zu skalieren und forscht zugleich zu neuen Ansätzen der (Re)Produktivitätsbemessung, die ökologisch-soziale Auswirkungen internalisieren.

Abstract: Die digitale Selbstvermessung ist eine neue Form der Selbstthematisierung an der Schnittstelle von Lebensführung, Technologie und digitalem Kapitalismus. Eryk Noji untersucht die Frage, wie Selbstvermesser*innen ihre Apps und Geräte im Alltag situieren. Mit Hilfe der Selbstvermessung regulieren Nutzer*innen ihren Alltag flexibel im Sinne kybernetischer Kontrolle. Diese Kybernetisierung des Selbst knüpft die Aussicht auf individuelle Autonomie an die Technisierung von Feedback und wird von Noji in ihren Ambivalenzen diskutiert. Der Autor Eryk Noji ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrgebiet Soziologische Gegenwartsdiagnosen an der FernUniversität in Hagen und Koordinator der interdisziplinären Forschungsgruppe Figurationen von Unsicherheit. Der Autor Jonathan Och hat in Bayreuth und Glasgow (LL.M.) Jura studiert. Abstract: In diesem Open-Access-Buch geht es um die Frage, wie Leser*innen in Deutschland automatisiert generierte Nachrichten wahrnehmen und welche Bedeutung sie den Verfahren im Journalismus zuschreiben. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, ob das Publikum dem automatisierten Journalismus vertraut und welche Einflussfaktoren bei dieser Entscheidung eine Rolle spielen. Zur empirischen Überprüfung wurden Focus Groups mit gezielt rekrutierten Leser*innen eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es keine monokausalen Antworten auf die Frage nach dem Vertrauen der Lesenden in automatisierten Journalismus gibt. Grundsätzlich stehen sie dem Technologieeinsatz neutral und gleichzeitig neugierig sowie – vor allem mit Blick auf die Zukunft – skeptisch gegenüber. Die Teilnehmenden fordern einen transparenten Umgang der Medienorganisationen mit automatisierter Berichterstattung und wollen mehr Informationen zum Einsatz, zur Verbreitung und zur Technologie haben. Als Einflussfaktoren auf die Vertrauensbewertung wurden ausgewählte Personen- sowie Text- und Publikationsmerkmale und Eigenschaften des Untersuchungsgegenstands getestet. Hohe Relevanz haben erkennbar die Angst vor gezielter Manipulation, die individuellen Vorstellungen über Künstliche Intelligenzen sowie die Kontingenz von Texten. Die Autorin Theresa Körner hat 2023 am Institut für Kommunikationswissenschaft der Otto-Friedrich Universität Bamberg zum Thema Vertrauen der Lesenden in Automatisierten Journalismus promoviert.

In addition, the existing investigative instruments for determining the maintenance debtor's ability to pay are discussed and a possible use of tax data in proceedings according to section 170 I StGB is proposed de lege ferenda

Abstract: Die Arbeit behandelt grundlegende Fragen der strafbaren Verletzung der Unterhaltspflicht. Sie umfasst das durch § 170 I StGB zu schützende Rechtsgut ebenso wie eine mögliche Bindungswirkung zivilgerichtlicher Entscheidungen sowie die Rechtsfolgen dieser Straftat. Als zur Legitimation des § 170 I StGB hinreichend gewichtiges Rechtsgut wird allein der notwendige Lebensbedarf des Unterhaltsberechtigten erkannt. Anders als Statusentscheidungen entfalten familiengerichtliche Entscheidungen zum Ob und zur Höhe einer Unterhaltspflicht im Strafverfahren keine Bindungswirkung. Ermittlungsbehörden und Strafgerichte müssen die Unterhaltspflicht daher eigenständig feststellen. Um dem nachkommen zu können, benötigen sie über die dargestellten bisherigen Ermittlungsinstrumente, wozu bereits de lege lata der Zugriff auf Sozialdaten gehört, hinaus de lege ferenda Zugriff auf Steuerdaten möglicher Unterhaltspflichtverletzer. Dessen verfassungsrechtliche Legitimierbarkeit wird ausführlich dargelegt

Abstract: The use of self-adaptive, AI/LLM-based machines is currently disruptively changing the subject area of multilingual specialist communication research. The discipline runs the risk of no longer being able to grasp the new developments through its current models and instruments and thereby marginalizing itself. Alexander Holste's model of automated knowledge communication responds to this challenge: It represents the cognitive-emotive construction of specialist knowledge by a situated knowledge actor in exchange with a language-processing machine. Abstract: Die zahlreichen Schicksale der Verfolgten des Nationalsozialismus sind faktenreich belegt, stehen aber im Spannungsfeld zur regionalen Erinnerungskultur nach 1945. Was bedeuten diese Spannungen heute? Maria Anna Willer untersucht Strukturen und Prozesse der Ausgrenzung in der Face-to-Face-Gesellschaft eines Dorfes am bayrischen Alpenrand zur Zeit der NS-Herrschaft und beleuchtet dessen Erinnerungskultur. In Anlehnung an Foucault beschreibt sie im Modell eines »Dispositivs der NS-Verfolgung« die engmaschigen Strukturen der Kontrolle und Überwachung sowie Widerstand und Hilfeleistungen als Kategorien der NS-Diktatur auf dem Dorf. Es zeigt sich: Nach 1945 ist eine Kontinuität der Ausgrenzung erkennbar, wenn die Erinnerung an Opfer der NS-Verfolgung verdrängt wird.

Abstract: In diesem Open-Access Buch wird die Transformation von traditionellen zu unternehmerischen Hochschulen unter einer neoliberalen Wissens- und Identitätspolitik untersucht. Vor dem Hintergrund einer Ökonomisierung der Gesellschaft geraten deutsche Hochschulen und ihre Angehörigen ab den 1990er Jahren zunehmend unter Druck, sich unternehmerisch-manageriale Denk- und Handlungsweisen anzueignen, um den wissenschaftspolitischen Forderungen nach einer höheren Wettbewerbs- und Leistungsfähigkeit, einer Qualitätssteigerung sowie nach mehr Transparenz und Effizienz Rechnung zu tragen. Mithilfe der Forschungsperspektive der Soziologie des individuellen Widerstands werden die Subjektivierungsweisen von Wissenschaftler*innen mit den Subjektivierungsformen des Managementdiskurses kontrastiert und (Ent-)Subjektivierungsprozesse in der deutschen Hochschullandschaft rekonstruiert. Der Autor Alexander Lenk hat am Institut für Soziologie an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena promoviert.
