The volume seeks to answer fundamental questions on the origins of fashion, challenging Eurocentric explanations that the emergence of fashion was a European phenomenon and shows instead that fashion found early expressions across the globe well before the age of European colonialism and imperialism. It sheds light on how fashion was experienced in a multitude of ways depending on class, gender, and race, and despite geographical distance, fashion connected populations across the globe. Fashions flowered and were reseeded, through entanglements of empire, forced and voluntary migration, evolving racial systems, burgeoning sea travel and transcontinental systems

    Kurzfassung: A History of Anti-Semitism examines the history, culture and literature of antisemitism from antiquity to the present. With contributions from an international team of scholars, whose essays were specially commissioned for this volume, it covers the long history of antisemitism starting with ancient Greece and Egypt, through the anti-Judaism of early Christianity, and the medieval era in both the Christian and Muslim worlds when Jews were defined as 'outsiders,' especially in Christian Europe. This portrayal often led to violence, notably pogroms that often accompanied Crusades, as well as to libels against Jews. The volume also explores the roles of Luther and the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the debate over Jewish emancipation, Marxism, and the social disruptions after World War 1 that led to the rise of Nazism and genocide. Finally, it considers current issues, including the dissemination of hate on social media and the internet and questions of definition and method.

    Kurzfassung: Offering an intimate history of how small things were used, handled, and worn, this collection shows how objects such as mugs and handkerchiefs were entangled with quotidian practices and rituals of bodily care. Small things, from tiny books to ceramic trinkets and toothpick cases, could delight and entertain, generating tactile pleasures for users while at the same time signalling the limits of the body's adeptness or the hand's dexterity. Simultaneously, the volume explores the striking mobility of small things: how fans, coins, rings, and pottery could, for instance, carry political, philosophical, and cultural concepts into circumscribed spaces. From the decorative and playful to the useful and performative, such small things as tea caddies, wampum beads, and drawings of ants negotiated larger political, cultural, and scientific shifts as they transported aesthetic and cultural practices across borders, via nationalist imagery, gift exchange, and the movement of global goods

    Kurzfassung: While the nation-state gave rise to the advent of museums, its influence in times of transculturality and post-/decolonial studies appears to have vanished. But is this really the case? With case studies from various geo- and sociopolitical contexts from around the globe, the contributors investigate which roles the nation-state continues to play in museums, collections, and heritage.     Kurzfassung: One of the greatest benefits of studying the ancient Greek and Roman past is the ability to utilise different forms of evidence, in particular both written and archaeological sources. The contributors to this volume employ this evidence to examine ancient housing, and what might be learned of identities, families, and societies, but they also use it as a methodological locus from which to interrogate the complex relationship between different types of sources. Chapters range from the recreation of the house as it was conceived in Homeric poetry, to the decipherment of a painted Greek lekythos to build up a picture of household activities, to the conjuring of the sensorial experience of a house in Pompeii. Together, they present a rich tapestry which demonstrates what can be gained for our understanding of ancient housing from examining the interplay between the words of ancient texts and the walls of archaeological evidence

    Kurzfassung: Research on social networks has become a significant area of investigation in the social sciences, and social network concepts and tools are widely employed across many subfields within the field. This volume introduces political theorists and researchers to new theoretical, methodological, and substantive tools for extending political network research into new realms and revitalizing established domains. The authors synthesize new understandings of multimodal political networks, consisting of two or more types of social entities - voters, politicians, parties, events, organizations, nations - and the complex relations between them. They discuss ways to theorize about multimodal connections, methods for measuring and analyzing multimodal datasets, and how the results can reveal new insights into political structures and action. Several empirical applications demonstrate in great detail how multimodal analysts can detect and visualize political communities consisting of diverse social entities.

    Kurzfassung: This Element brings together the history of emotions and temporalities, offering a new perspective on both. Time was often imagined as a movement from the past to the future: the past is gone and the future not yet here. Only present-day subjects could establish relations to other times, recovering history as well as imagining and anticipating the future. In a movement paralleling the emphasis on the porous self, constituted by emotions situated not inside but between subjects, this Element argues for a porous present, which is open to the intervention of ghosts coming from the past and from the future. What needs investigating is the flow between times as much as the creation of boundaries between them, which first banishes the ghosts and then denies their existence. Emotions are the most important way through which subjects situate and understand themselves in time

    Kurzfassung: Immigration makes America what it is and is formative for what it will become. America was settled by three different models of immigration, all of which persist to the present. The Virginia Colony largely equated immigration with the arrival of laborers, who had few rights. Massachusetts welcomed those who shared the religious views of the founders but excluded those whose beliefs challenged prevailing orthodoxy. Pennsylvania valued pluralism, becoming the most diverse colony in religion, language, and culture. A fourth, anti-immigration model also emerged during the colonial period, and was often fueled by populist leaders who stoked fears about newcomers. Arguing that the Pennsylvania model has best served the country, this book makes key recommendations for future immigration reform. Given the highly controversial nature of immigration in the United States, this second edition - updated to analyze policy changes in the Obama and Trump administrations - provides valuable insights for academics and policymakers

    Kurzfassung: By the mid-twentieth century, youth movements around the globe ruled the streets. In Lebanon, young people in these groups attended lectures, sang songs, and participated in sporting events; their music tastes, clothing choices and routine activities shaped their identities. Yet scholars of modern Lebanon often focus exclusively on the sectarian makeup and violent behaviors of these socio-political groupings, obscuring the youth cultures that they forged. Using unique sources to highlight the daily lives of the young men and women of Lebanon's youth politics, Dylan Baun traces the political and cultural history of a diverse set of youth-centric organizations from the 1920s to 1950s to reveal how these youth movements played significant roles in the making of the modern Middle East. Outlining how youth movements established a distinct type of politics and populism, Winning Lebanon reveals that these groups both encouraged the political socialization of different types of youth, and, through their attempts to 'win' Lebanon - physically and metaphorically - around the 1958 War, helped produce sectarian violence.

These spheres drew on a shared pool of late antique Mediterranean culture, philosophy and science, and they had monotheism and historical antecedents in common. Yet where exactly political and spiritual power lay, and how it was exercised, differed. This book focuses on power dynamics and resource-allocation among ruling elites; the legitimisation of power and property with the aid of religion; and on rulers' interactions with local elites and societies. Repräsentationen und lebensweltliche Erfahrungen des Ländlichen avancieren zu einem alltagskulturellen Konfliktfeld, auf dem sich vor einem historischen Hintergrund elementare Problemlagen der Gegenwart und die Komplexität von kulturellen Land-Stadt-Beziehungen spiegeln.Die Beiträge des Bandes liefern hierzu Einsichten aus der Forschungsperspektive der Europäischen Ethnologie und rahmen das Thema damit für historische und gegenwartsbezogene Kulturanalysen begrifflich, methodisch und theoretisch. - Biographical note: Manuel Trummer (Dr. phil), geb. 1979, lehrt Vergleichende Kulturwissenschaft an der Universität Regensburg. Er habilitierte sich als außerordentliches Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zum Thema der Konstruktion des Ländlichen in populären Literaturen und Medien. Alltagskulturell-politische Zukunftsstrategien in peripheren ländlichen Räumen bilden einen weiteren Forschungsschwerpunkt.Anja Decker, geb. 1982, ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Soziologischen Institut der Tschechischen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Prag. Als Mitglied des internationalen Doktorand_innenprogramms »Transformations in European Societies« promoviert sie am Institut für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft und Europäische Ethnologie der LMU München mit einer wirtschaftsanthropologischen Untersuchung von Alltagsarrangements im ländlichen Westböhmen an der Schnittstelle von Raum, Geschlecht und sozialem Milieu. Sie ist Sprecherin der Kommission Kulturanalyse des Ländlichen der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Volkskunde.

In detaillierten Analysen der Diskurse und Praktiken der beteiligten Akteur*innen treten überraschende Verflechtungen zutage, die ein Begehren nach der Herstellung von Gemeinschaft und Nation offenbaren.

When fathers, husbands, teachers, abbots, and slave-owners asserted their own will, they saw themselves as maintaining the social order, and expected law and government to reinforce their rule. Naturally, the members of these communities had their own ideas, and teaching them to 'obey their betters' was not always a straightforward business. Drawing on a wide variety of sources from across the late Roman Mediterranean, from law codes and inscriptions to monastic rules and hagiography, the book considers the sometimes conflicting identities of women, slaves, and children, and documents how they found opportunities for agency and recognition within a system built on the unremitting assertion of the rights of the powerful

    Kurzfassung: It is not only a paradox but something of an intellectual scandal that, in an era so shaken by radical actions and ideologies, social science has had nothing theoretically new to say about radicalism since the middle of the last century. Breaching the Civil Order fills this void. It argues that, rather than seeing radicalism in substantive terms - as violent or militant, communist or fascist - radicalism should be seen more broadly as any organized effort to breach the civil order. The theory is brilliantly made flesh in a series of case studies by leading European and American social scientists, from the destruction of property in the London race riots to the public militancy of Black Lives Matter in the US, the performative violence of the Irish IRA and the Mexican Zapatistas to the democratic upheavals of the Arab Spring, and from Islamic terrorism in France to Germany's right-wing populist Pegida.

    Kurzfassung: Gefühle beeinflussen unser Verhalten überall - auch in der Wissenschaft. Aber bei Forscher_innen sind Affekte suspekt: Sie werden als Störungen betrachtet, die eine objektive Arbeit gefährden. Dabei beeinflussen sie zwangsläufig den Forschungsprozess, weshalb ihre kritische Analyse ein fester Bestandteil wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeit sein sollte. Insbesondere die Feldforschung löst regelmäßig emotionale Reaktionen (etwa zu Kriegsgräuel, Diskriminierungen von Bevölkerungsgruppen oder sozialen Unterschieden) aus, welche die Beobachtung bedingen, das Verständnis beeinflussen und die Theoriebildung lenken. In den Beiträgen des Bandes werden fächerübergreifend eine Reihe textanalytischer und empirischer Methoden vorgeschlagen, mit deren Hilfe Emotionalität in der Forschung transparent gemacht werden kann

    Kurzfassung: The Crisis behind the Euro-Crisis encourages dialogue among scholars across the social sciences in an attempt to challenge the narrative that regarded the Euro-crisis as an exceptional event. It is suggested instead that the Euro-crisis, along with the subsequent crises the EU has come to face, was merely symptomatic of deeper systemic cracks. This book's aim is to uncover that hidden systemic crisis - the 'crisis behind the Euro-crisis'. Under this reading it emerges that what needs to be questioned is not only the allegedly purely economic character of the Euro-crisis, but, more fundamentally, its very classification as an 'emergency'. Instead, the Euro-crisis needs to be regarded as expressive of a chronic, dysfunctional, but 'normal' condition of the EU. By following this line of analysis, this book illuminates not only the causes of contemporary turbulences in the European project, but perhaps the 'true' nature of the EU itself

    Kurzfassung: This ground-breaking volume explores a series of inter-related key themes in Saharan archaeology and history. Migration and identity formation can both be approached from the perspective of funerary archaeology, using the combined evidence of burial structures, specific rites and funerary material culture, and integrated methods of skeletal analysis including morphometrics, palaeopathology and isotopes. Burial traditions from various parts of the Sahara are compared and contrasted with those of the Nile Valley, the Maghreb and West Africa. Several chapters deal with the related evidence of human migration derived from linguistic study. The volume presents the state of the field of funerary archaeology in the Sahara and its neighbouring regions and sets the agenda for future research on mobility, migration and identity.     Kurzfassung: In 1936, Nazi Germany and militarist Japan built a partnership which culminated in the Tokyo-Berlin Axis. This study of interwar German-Japanese relations is the first to employ sources in both languages. Transnational Nazism was an ideological and cultural outlook that attracted non-Germans to become adherents of Hitler and National Socialism, and convinced German Nazis to identify with certain non-Aryans. Because of the distance between Germany and Japan, mass media was instrumental in shaping mutual perceptions and spreading transnational Nazism. This work surveys the two national media to examine the impact of transnational Nazism. When Hitler and the Nazi movement gained prominence, Japanese newspapers, lectures and pamphlets, nonfiction, and language textbooks transformed to promote the man and his party. Meanwhile, the ascendancy of Hitler and his regime created a niche for Japan in the Nazi worldview and Nazified newspapers, films, nonfiction, and voluntary associations.

    Kurzfassung: Kollaboratives Arbeiten ist der Modus der Stunde. Kaum ein Projekt, das seine Bedeutung nicht auch über den Stellenwert des Zusammenarbeitens formuliert. Unsichtbar bleiben jedoch oftmals die (versteckten) Strukturen und Bedingungen, unter denen sich kollaborative Prozesse konstituieren und durchgeführt werden.     Kurzfassung: Emotions are central to social life and thus they should be central to organization theory. However, emotions have been treated implicitly rather than theorized directly in much of organization theory, and in some literatures, have been ignored altogether. This Element focuses on emotions as intersubjective, collective and relational, and reviews structuralist, people-centered and strategic approaches to emotions in different research streams to provide one of the first broad examinations of emotions in organization theory. Charlene Zietsma, Maxim Voronov, Madeline Toubiana and Anna Roberts provide suggestions for future research within each literature and look across the literatures to identify theoretical and methodological considerations.

    Kurzfassung: Using a variety of historical sources and methodological approaches, this book presents the first large-scale study of single men and women in the Roman world, from the Roman Republic to Late Antiquity and covering virtually all periods of the ancient Mediterranean. It asks how singleness was defined and for what reasons people might find themselves unmarried. While marriage was generally favoured by philosophers and legislators, with the arguments against largely confined to genres like satire and comedy, the advent of Christianity brought about a more complex range of thinking regarding its desirability. Demographic, archaeological and socio-economic perspectives are considered, and in particular the relationship of singleness to the Roman household and family structures. The volume concludes by introducing a number of comparative perspectives, drawn from the early Islamic world and from other parts of Europe down to and including the nineteenth century, in order to highlight possibilities for the Roman world.

It also shows how even formal organizations may be only partially organized. Cultural biases often result in unstated assumptions that have a deep impact on the making of strategy, operational planning, doctrinal creation, and the organization and training of armed forces. Of all the factors that are involved in military effectiveness, culture is perhaps the most important. Yet, it also remains the most difficult to describe and understand, because it entails so many external factors that impinge, warp, and distort its formation and continuities.     Kurzfassung: Verfolgung aufgrund marginalisierter sexueller Orientierung und geschlechtlicher Identität ist in der BRD ein anerkannter Asylgrund. Etwa zehn Prozent der derzeit einreisenden Geflüchteten sind lesbisch, schwul, bisexuell, trans*, intergeschlechtlich oder queer - kurz LSBTTIQ-Geflüchtete. Sie sind in der BRD mit spezifischen Formen von Diskriminierungen konfrontiert, wodurch in der LSBTTIQ-Community einerseits ein zunehmendes Bewusstsein über Flucht und Migration und das Bedürfnis, sich politisch und unterstützend einzubringen, entsteht. Andererseits werden mit aktuell verstärkten Migrationsbewegungen auch Sorgen um emanzipatorische Errungenschaften laut, die zum Teil jedoch in rassistische Zuschreibungen abgleiten.Die Beiträger_innen des Bandes begegnen der Diskussion in differenzierter Weise und nehmen die Herausforderungen, aber auch Chancen und Möglichkeiten jenseits von Verallgemeinerungen und Paternalismus in den Blick. Sie befassen sich mit Forschungsethik, partizipativen Erhebungsmethoden, medialen Repräsentationen, intersektionalen Erfahrungen sowie den konkreten Bedürfnissen von LSBTTIQ-Geflüchteten in Erstunterbringung und Asylverfahren.     Kurzfassung: Materialität gewinnt in der Soziologie seit den 1980er Jahren neue Aufmerksamkeit - thematisch wie theoretisch. Dinge, Artefakte, Stoffe und Texturen werden auf ihr Verwobensein mit dem Sozialen hin untersucht. Die einzelnen Beiträge thematisieren unterschiedliche empirische Themen - vom Naturjoghurt bis zum Weltraum, von der Plastiktüte bis zum wissenschaftlichen Vortrag - und sie beziehen sich dabei auf ebenso unterschiedliche soziologische Theorie-Perspektiven.
    Kurzfassung: The program of sociology is to understand and explain what is social. To do so, subjects are explored differently in theory, and each is examined practically. The series "10 Minutes of Sociology" brings both into relation with each other. The contributions of each volume explore a specific subject - here: "materiality" - conceptually from various perspectives and apply the knowledge gained to a specific case. This sensitizes the sociological viewpoint on a this-might-be-different perception of social facts.
