Abstract: The Luo collection covers cultural, historical, economic and demographic information circa 1895 to 2000. There are a number of general ethnographies on Luo culture and society as observed by professional anthropologists in late the 1920s to the mid-1930s. Specific themes covered in these works include tribes, kinship and social organization, marriage and sex restrictions, religion, life cycles and burials. These ethnographic accounts are further supplemented by the works of historian Jean Hay, discussing changes in material culture and gender relations that took place before the Second World War as a direct result of British colonial rule and the complex forces it set in motion. The collection also includes anthropological works that specifically focus on the post Second World War decade with particular emphasis on dynamics of lineage and family ties, customary law and Luo attitudes toward homicide and suicide. Other documents in the collection focus on the actual experiences of Luo men and women with urbanization and nationally designed development programs in the post-independence period (1963-2000). Specific themes covered include Luo responses to urbanization, modern education and population growth, changes in public health and nutrition, land policy, and the local effects of labor migration and global market forces; and misguided development programs. The remaining documents by Blount provide a linguistic analysis of Luo genealogical accounting, personal naming systems, and comprehensive bibliographic information of existing works on Luo culture and society, circa 1920-2000

Abstract: The O'odham collection consists of sixteen English language documents covering the Spanish period from 1687 to 1821; the Mexican period from 1821 to 1848, the American period from 1848 to approximately 1981, and interspersed, on occasion, with bits of information on the prehistory of the general region. Although many historians and anthropologists have treated the Pima and Papago as two separate peoples, by the early twenty-first century, the cultural similarity between the two, has led us to combine them in this collection under the new designation "O'odham". Cultural history and general ethnography are the major topics in many of the documents in this collection, notably by: Underhill; Fontana; Ezell; Bahr; and the history of Christianity among the Pima-Papago in Bahr. Other ethnographic topics discussed in this collection are: the life history of a Papago woman in Underhill; regional geography in Castetter; and Fontana; cultural adaptation in Fontana, Hackenberg, and Castetter. Personalilty development and child-rearing practices are major topics of discussion in Joseph. Finally, shamanism, theories of disease, and curing are all described in Bahr, while food and diet in comparison to disease factors, form a significant topic of discussion in Fazzino

Abstract: The Yurok collection consists of all English language documents covering a variety of ethnographic topics. The major source of information on the Yurok is found in Heizer and Mills which is an account of a coastal village through time (ca. 1775-1952), supplemented by additional information from Kroeber, and Pilling. Two of the studies in this collection deal with the Yurok's own view of their culture, in Thompson, and Pilling. The remaining collection is rounded out by data on child training and world view in Erickson; marriage as examined through genealogical records, in Waterman and Kroeber; geography, in Waterman; law, in Kroeber; the tradition of music and songs among the Yurok, in Keeling; women's attitude toward menstruation and associated rituals in Buckley; and finally physical anthropology in Ferreira

Abstract: The Omaha collection covers a variety of cultural, historical and environmental information on different sections of Omaha society from pre-contact times to early 2000s. The work of Alice Fletcher, an anthropologist who lived with the Omaha for thirty years in 1875-1905, and Francis La Flesche, a native Omaha, is the basic and most comprehensive document in the collection. The collection also includes two works by a missionary/anthropologist, James Dorsey, who worked among the Omaha in 1878-1980. Together, these works provide the earliest systematic attempts at understanding and reconstructing pre-reservation Omaha society and culture. The remaining documents describe and examine more specific aspects of Omaha culture including acculturation with particular reference to women, religious life and organization of secret societies, and recent dynamics of ethnicity and identity especially among current generation Omaha peoples in Nebraska

Abstract: The Nambicuara Collection documents, now all of them in English, cover cultural, economic and environmental information circa 1907 to 1987. The basic source, translated from French, is by Levi-Strauss. This work deals mainly with family and social life, but also covers religion, kinship and subsistence activities. Information from this source is further supplemented by a brief ethnographic description originally published in the Handbook of South American Indians and two other works which focus on specific themes including chieftainship and social use of kinship terms. Seven documents in the collection were written by anthropologists P. David Price and Paul L. Aspelin who conducted original ethnographic fieldwork among different Nambicuara groups in 1967-1976. Five of the documents in this group revisit Levi-Strauss's data and analysis of Nambicuara economic activities, political organization and leadership, while the remaining two focus on specific themes including socioeconomic change and government efforts at resettling several Nambicuara groups. The collection also includes a work, translated from Portuguese, by E. Abstract: The Trumai File contains a monograph by Murphy and Quain, the only available primary ethnographic account on the Trumai. This document provides a first hand account of Trumai culture and society as observed by anthropologist Buell Quain in 1938. The document is especially comprehensive in its coverage and analyses of the Trumai personality, ethos, life cycle, and interpersonal attitudes and behavior, but less extensive on material culture and religion. The document also incorporates important ethnographic data from the work of Karl Von den Steinen who visited the Trumai in 1884

Abstract: The Mongo Collection, covers cultural and historical information on the Nkundu and Boyela (central Mongo) and Ntomba and Ekonda (southern Mongo), circa 1880s to 1980s. The earliest source was compiled by Gustave E Hulstaert, who lived among the Nkundu (northern Mongo) in the 1930s, who provides rich information on Mongo marriage types and family life. Also included is an article by E. Boelaert, which may be the first systematic attempt at understanding Mongo social organization. Nelson explores the history of the Mongo people from 1880s-1940s. Topics covered include forced labor on foreign rubber and palm oil plantations, changes in the power base of local leaders, and transformations in kinship system and community organizations. Héléne Pagezy discusses the Mongo practice of making first time mothers build a plump physique. Hiroaki Sato describes and analyzes the hunting techniques of the Boyela of northern Mongo

Abstract: The NT18 Tewa Pueblos documents, all in English, cover a time span from approximately 1540 to the late twentieth century. Although this collection does deal to some extent with most of the Tewa pueblos of New Mexico – San Juan, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Tesuque, Pojoaque, and Nambe - major emphasis in this document is on the two pueblos of San Juan and San Ildefonso. A "classic" study of traditional Tewa ethnography, at least up to 1927, is found in Parsons, focusing on social organization, ritual, and ceremonies, but lacking much information on material culture. Brief culture summaries on some of the other pueblos will be found as follows: San Ildefonso; Santa Clara; Nambe; Pojoaque; Tesuque; and San Juan. Other major topics include population statistics on San Juan in Aberle; recent (twentieth century) culture change in San Ildefonso in Whitman; Tewa world view and the role of dual moiety organization in a functioning society in Ortiz; and details of the Raingod Drama, and the making of medicine men in San Juan in Laski

Abstract: The Winnebago/Ho-Chunk collection covers a time span from approximately 1620 to the late twentieth century. The primary work in this collection is Radin, which provides a detailed ethnography of the Winnebago/Ho-Chunk from the early seventeenth century to 1913. This material is supplemented by the summary of Winnebago/Ho-Chunk culture history by Lurie, which covers the early period described by Radin, and expands coverage up to 1978. This document discusses the fur trade period, treaties and land cessions between the U. S. government and the Nebraska and Wisconsin branches as two separate entities of the tribe, and post-World War II economic conditions. Other major topics include culture change and cultural stability among the Wisconsin Winnebago/Ho-Chunk in 1944 and the status of the berdache in Winnebago/Ho-Chunk society. In addition Radin attempts to show how three marked characteristics of Winnebago/Ho-Chunk civilization – the conservation of old cultural elements, the receptivity to new ideas, and the capacity for making new integrations – interact with one another to create new culture patterns in the Winnebago/Ho-Chunk milieu. Hill, based on ethno-historical research, is a study of the drinking practices of the Winnebago/Ho-Chunk from the early 1860s to the early 1920s, relating these practices to the changing socio-cultural environment. The major focus in this work is on the manner in which the Peyote religion helped control excessive drinking. Richards’ paper in this collection focuses on the Winnebago/Ho-Chunk during the late prehistoric/early historic period, with particular emphasis on subsistence. The Astor site in Green Bay, Wisconsin is suggested as a potential link between the prehistoric/historic Winnebago/Ho-Chunk and limited subsistence information from the site is examined in that light

Abstract: This collection about the Zuni, a pueblo Indian group located in the southwestern United States, consists of 33 documents. The collection is oriented toward traditional Zuni ethnography represented by the classic works of Stevenson, Cushing, Kroeber, Parsons, Bunzel, and Woodbury. The social and political organization of the Zuni are covered in Ladd, Eggan, Eggan and Pandey, and Pandey. Kinship is discussed in Kroeber, Schneider, and Ladd; and agriculture is covered by Cushing, Bohrer, and Damp. Acculturation and culture change are topics of focus in McFeat, Leighton, Mills, and Eggan and Pandey. Other ethnographic subjects covered in this collection are kachinas, family and household, and ceramics. Wyaco wrote an autobiographical account of growing up in the Zuni society, and Pandey critiques various anthropologists' work with the Zuni over the years. The Zuni, who call themselves "A shiwi," are primarily concentrated in the single village or pueblo of Zuni situated on a reservation in west-central New Mexico

Abstract: This collection about the Cherokee consists of 46 documents, and covers the time span from 1540, the period of the first Cherokee-European contacts, to the early twenty-first century. Emphasis is placed on culture history, economy, society, and Cherokee-Euro-American relations. Others focus on folklore, myths, and magical formulas. Most deal with the topics of socio-cultural change and acculturation. Three authors, Strickland, Reid, and Reid, concentrate on Cherokee law and government. Fox deals with sex and gender in Cherokee society; Perdue with the invention of the Cherokee writing system; McLoughlin with the origin and development of the Cherokee Ghost Dance; and both Irwin and Fogelson cover shamanism, witchcraft, sorcery, and mysticism. The Cherokee are an Iroquoian-speaking people who originally occupied the southern Appalachians of North America. In 1838-1839 a major portion of the Cherokee were forcibly removed from their homeland by the United States government to the present state of Oklahoma along the infamous Trail of Tears. In the early twenty-first century there are two main groups: the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma

Abstract: The collection about the people of Ulithi consists of two documents and a culture summary. The two documents, both by Lessa and both in English, cover the time span from about 1900 to 1949. They present a comprehensive ethnographic study of Ulithi Atoll conducted by the author over a nine month period of fieldwork from 1947 through 1949, and a collection of previously unpublished myths and folktales from Ulithi. The people of Ulithi live on the Ulithi atoll in the west-central Caroline Islands of the western Pacific, and speak a dialect of Chuukese. Ulithi has undergone strong culture change since the atoll came under United States control in 1944

Abstract: This collection of 11 documents and a culture summary cover Ute society from pre-contact times to the 1980s. Studies include the earliest systematic attempts at reconstructing pre-reservation Ute culture and society, with particular emphasis on organization and composition of bands, settlement patterns and land use practices, as remembered by elderly informants in the 1930s and 1940s. These works also include detailed first hand descriptions of a bear dance performance, a peyote meeting and the sun dance which the authors personally observed. Other topics include mythology, concepts of nature and power, effects of oil money and development intervention and, aspects of history. Ute society was internally divided into several, but continuously fluid, bands and the history and interaction of each band with the state and market forces varied greatly. The Ute are a Native American group located in Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. At the time of European contact in the 1600s and 1700s, the Ute occupied much of central and eastern Utah and all of western Colorado, as well as minor portions of northwestern New Mexico, living as nomadic hunters and gatherers

Abstract: "Needing guidance and seeking insight, the Council of Europe approached Pierre Lévy, one of the world's most important and well-respected theorists of digital culture, for a report on the state (and, frankly, the nature) of cyberspace. The result is this extraordinary document, a perfectly lucid and accessible description of cyberspace-from infrastructure to practical applications-along with an inspired, far-reaching exploration of its ramifications. A window on the digital world for the technologically timid, the book also offers a brilliant vision of the philosophical and social realities and possibilities of cyberspace for the adept and novice alike. In an overview, Lévy discusses the distinguishing features of cyberspace and cyberculture from anthropological, philosophical, cultural, and sociological points of view. An optimist about the future potential of cyberspace, he eloquently argues that technology-and specifically the infrastructure of cyberspace, the Internet-can have a transformative effect on global society. Some of the issues he takes up are new art forms; changes in relationships to knowledge, education, and training; the preservation of linguistic and cultural differences; the emergence and implications of collective intelligence; the problems of social exclusion; and the impact of new technology on the city and democracy in general. In considerable detail, Lévy describes the ways in which cyberspace will help promote the growth of democracy, primarily through the participation of individuals or groups. His analysis is enlivened by his own personal impressions of cyberculture-garnered from bulletin boards, mailing lists, virtual reality demonstrations, andsimulations. Immediate in its details, visionary in its scope, deeply informed yet free of unnecessary technical language, Cyberculture is the book we require in our digital age". -- From English edition

Abstract: Gusii or Abagusii is the people's name for themselves. The Gusii are divided into seven clan clusters: Kitutu (Getutu), North Mugirango, South Mugirango, Majoge, Wanjare (Nchari), Bassi, and Nyaribari. Gusiiland is located in western Kenya, 50 kilometers east of Lake Victoria. This collection of 32 English language documents deals with the Gusii people of Kisii District in southwestern Kenya. The major time span covered is approximately one hundred years ranging from about 1900 to 2001, with a focus on the years of 1950-1976. Only one study in this collection (Hakansson, 1994) deals with the pre-colonial period (i.e., pre-1907); specifically with the relationship between agricultural production and grain and cattle exchange. Two studies provide some degree of general ethnographic coverage; these are LeVine 1966 and 1994. In addition the LeVines (Robert and Sarah) provide a wealth of information on infant and child care and development. Other ethnographic topics covered in this collection are: bride-wealth as a significant feature of Gusii marriage arrangements in Mayer, 1950 and Hakansson, 1988 and 1990; kinship in Mayer, 1949 and 1965; witchcraft and sorcery in LeVine, 1963 and Ogembo, 2001; gender in Hakansson and LeVine, 1997, and Hakansson, 1994; and sex offenses and social control in LeVine, 1959 and 1980. Eight documents are from the text, Child Care and culture: Lessons from Africa

Abstract: The Inka tradition follows the Huari and Tiwanaku periods through the development of the Inka empire to the Spanish conquest and dates to 800-400 B.P. The Incan empire united city states across the Andean region. This collection consists of 23 documents, including important primary sources dating to the period of the Spanish conquest which detail Inka social organization, customs, and religion (Pedro de Cieza de León, Bernabé Cobo, Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala, Juan Polo de Ondegardo; selections from Narratives of the rites and laws of the Yncas, including Polo de Ondegardo, Pachacuti-Yamqui Salcamayhua and Garcilasso de la Vega). Rowe and Zuidema use the primary sources to examine Inka society. Bauer uses material culture to describe the Cuzco ceque system. Hyslop describes Inkan-built settlements. Murra looks at economic and social organization before the Spanish conquest. Silverblatt compares gender issues from before the Inka empire to after the Spanish conquest; Costin examines the role of women in textile prdocution. D'Altroy examines the interaction between the Inka and the conquered ethnic groups; this and related topics are examined in detail in selections from Inca and Aztec states, 1400-1800 (Pease G.Y., Murra, Wachtel, Rowe, Julien and Morris)

Abstract: The Zia are a Keres-speaking pueblo tribe who live on the Jemez River, 35 miles northwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This collection of eight documents is about the Zia. The classic work is by Leslie White and was based on his fieldwork from 1928-1929 and return visits during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. He focused mostly on secret societies, including membership, recruitment, and ceremonies. Two of the documents are by Hoebel. The first is a brief account of Zia history and culture that was also published in the Handbook of North American Indians. The second is about Zia law. There is no private law. Clans and lineages have no role in the legal process. All cases are brought before the governor and a council comprised of the heads of secret societies. Lange has written a detailed account of the famous Green Corn Dance; Hawley et al. a nutritional study; Polese on the Zia sun symbol; and Stevenson on child birth. The bibliography of citations to works on Zia Pueblo is also taken from vol. 9 of the Handbook on North American Indians, Southwest

Abstract: This file contains 23 documents. The major ethnographers of the Nuer represented are E.E. Evans-Pritchard (field work: 1930-1936), Douglas Johnson (1975-1990), and Sharon Hutchinson (1980-1992). Douglas Johnson's work is mostly historical covering the period of the Anglo-Egyptian condominium (1898-1955) with a focus on the role of prophets in Nuer social, political, and religious life. Evans-Pritchard describes Nuer ecology, subsistence, sociopolitical organization, kinship and marriage, and religion. Hutchinson examines gender relations; the trying period of the Sudanese Civil War (1955-present); and the changes to Nuer society and culture wrought by money, war, and the state. Abstract: Between Culture and Biology brings together biological, psychological and cultural perspectives on development. It argues that the biological bases of behaviour and cultural context should be approached in an integrated fashion to properly understand ontogenetic development and that both the cultural and biological demain provide constraints and opportunities for development

Abstract: The Chuuk files contains 31 documents, most of which are based on research carried out during and after the 1947-1948 Coordinated Investigation of Micronesian Anthropology project. An earlier work covers religion, language, and material culture. Other subjects found in this file include geography, history, arts, and native zoology and botany; descriptions of Chuuk artifacts, canoe travel, and taro cultivation; medical concepts; sociopolitical organization and property as well as native astronomy, changes in property relations, and Chuuk origins; works on social relationships; studies of the educational system under the Japanese, Chuuk personality and patterns of authority in relation to colonization, an analysis of Chuuk personality, and Chuuk character and prestige. Discussions of cultural change are found in studies of change in patterns of adoption, infant feeding practices, and fertility. Several works focus on the serious social problems of alcoholism, and suicide. Other topics explored are sexual behavior and relationships and ideas about sexual reproduction

Keywords: Saramacca (Suriname people) ; Saramacca (Surinam people) ; Saramakka ; Saramakka
Abstract: The Saramaka are one of six Maroon (or Bush Negro) groups in Suriname. The Saramaka live in the northern extension of the Amazonian forest along the upper Suriname River and its tributaries, the Gaánlío and the Pikílío, and -- since the 1960s -- along the lower Suriname River in villages constructed by the national government after the flooding of approximately half of tribal territory for a hydroelectric project. This file contains six documents, including five books by the anthropologists Sally and Richard Price. The earliest work is a travelogue-like account of Saramaccan beliefs and practices by the anthropologists Melville and Frances Herskovits, who did their field work in 1928 and 1929. Two of the books by Richard Price are histories based on oral and written accounts and cover the period from the establishment of the plantations in Suriname, in the late 1600s, to the Peace of 1762 (Price, R. 1983) and the following period from 1762 to 1820 (Price, R. 1990). Also included is Richard Price's published dissertation on Saramaccan social structure and organization, Sally Price's work on Saramaccan art and gender relations, and a work the Prices co-authored about Saramaccan folk-telling

The earliest by Gatschet is based on field work carried out in 1877 and includes information on geography, settlements, folklore, language, and mythology. Spier produced a "memory ethnography" based on informant recollections of ca. 1860 tribal life. He also compared Klamath cultural traits with those of neighboring groups in order to establish Klamath origins and affiliations. Stern wrote about the history, culture, and politics of the Klamath reservation and a study of Klamath myths and their narration. Barker also recorded Klamath mythology and life histories. Other articles in the file include studies of Klamath childhood and socialization (Pearsall), material culture (Barrett), personality and acculturation (Clifton and Levine), comparative religion (Spencer), and songs and their interpretation (Weaver)

Abstract: The Pawnee are Native Americans who originally lived in what is now central Nebraska and central Kansas in the basins of the Platte and Republican rivers. The Pawnee spoke a Caddoan language. The focus is on the traditional way of life of the Pawnee. This file consists of 18 English language documents dealing primarily with traditional Pawnee ethnography for the period of 1850 to the 1920s. There is a slight focus in the file on materials dealing with the Skidi (Skiri) band of Pawnee. Probably the most comprehensive ethnographic information on the Pawnee as a whole is found in Weltfish, further supplemented with data from Smith, Grinnell, and the oral traditions described in Blaine. Major topics discussed in this file relate to culture history, ceremonialism, and religious beliefs. Other documents deal with more specific ethnographic topics such as music and songs; social organization; literature in the form of hero stories and folktales; and ethnoastronomy
