    Note: Combining approaches from reception studies and historical musicology, this book demonstrates how the representation of music at exhibitions drew the press and public into debates about music's role in society. International exhibitions were among the most significant cultural phenomena of the late nineteenth century. These vast events aimed to illustrate, through displays of physical objects, the full spectrum of the world's achievements, from industry and manufacturing, to art and design. But exhibitions were not just visual spaces. Music was ever present, as a fundamental part of these events' sonic landscape, and integral to the visitor experience. This book explores music at international exhibitions held in Australia, India, and the United Kingdom during the 1880s. At these exhibitions, music was codified, ordered, and all-round 'exhibited' in manifold ways. Displays of physical instruments from the past and present were accompanied by performances intended to educate or to entertain, while music was heard at exhibitors' stands, in concert halls, and in the pleasure gardens that surrounded the exhibition buildings. Music was depicted as a symbol of human artistic achievement, or employed for commercial ends. At times it was presented in nationalist terms, at others as a marker of universalism. This book argues, by interrogating the multiple ways that music was used, experienced, and represented, that exhibitions can demonstrate in microcosm many of the broader musical traditions, purposes, arguments, and anxieties of the day. Its nine chapters focus on sociocultural themes, covering issues of race, class, public education, economics, and entertainment in the context of music, tracing these through the networks of communication that existed within the British Empire at the time

    Abstract: 〈i〉Music Scenes and Migrations〈/i〉 brings together new work from Brazilian and European scholars around the themes of musical place and transnationalism across the Atlantic triangle connecting Brazil, Africa and Europe. Moving beyond now-contested models for conceptualizing international musical relations and hierarchies of powers and influence, such as global/local or centre/periphery, the volume draws attention instead to the role of the city, and in particular, in producing, signifying and mediating music-making in the colonial and post-colonial Portuguese-speaking world. In considering the roles played by cities as hubs of cultural intersection, socialization, exchange and transformation; as sites of political intervention and contestation; and as homes to large concentrations of consumers, technologies and media, Rio de Janeiro necessarily figures prominently, given its historical importance as an international port at the centre of the Lusophone Atlantic world. The volume also gives attention to other urban centres, within Brazil and abroad, towards which musicians and musical traditions have migrated and converged - such as São Paulo, Lisbon and Madrid - where they have reinvented themselves; where notions of Brazilian and Lusophone identity have been reconfigured; and where independent, peripheral and underground scenes have contested the hegemony of the musical 'mainstream'. 〈br〉〈br〉The contributions to the volume are grouped according to three key thematic areas: Colonial and post-Colonial transnationalisms, migrations and diasporas; relocating Rio de Janeiro; and demetropolitanizing the musical city: other scenes, industries, technologies

    Abstract: "Gold, Festivals, and Music in Southeast Brazil: Sounding Portugueseness is a study of the musical legacy of the 18th century Brazilian gold rush that integrates ethnographic research of the main genres of former mining communities in Brazil -- from liturgical music in the style of European art music to Afro-Brazilian musical expressions. Its content and structure are informed by Norbert Elias' idea of the civilizing process, which is explored regarding its relevance in interpreting sociocultural processes and choreo-musical expressions in the small town Morro Vermelho. The book's innovative feature is its focus on a little-known area to non-Brazilian scholars,and its focus on the colonial and European heritage in Brazil. Morro Vermelho's cultural traditions have received relatively limited attention. The Catholic festival of Our Lady of Nazareth provides a setting for the documentation and analysis of the musical setting and is thus placed at the centre of the discussion. It leads through the vast writings on Brazilian identity and challenges the view on Brazilian-ness as constructed in terms of the mixing of races. Norbert Elias's concept of the "civilizing process" structures the book and is relevant for understanding the cultural sphere of the festival of Our Lady of Nazareth. The book combines discourses of Portugueseness with historical sources and observations from fieldwork and community building in the virtual world. The focus on the music to support social constructions of "Portugueseness" is supported with evidence from diverse data sources: music (literature and fieldwork recordings), original interviews, marketing materials and historical narratives. The combination of archival, ethnographic and bibliographic research methods attempts a seamless narrative.     Abstract: "Ralph Ellison famously characterized ensemble jazz improvisation as "antagonistic cooperation." Both collaborative and competitive, musicians play with and against one another to create art and community. In Antagonistic Cooperation, Robert G. O'Meally shows how this idea runs throughout twentieth-century African American culture to provide a new history of Black creativity and aesthetics. From the collages of Romare Bearden and paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat to the fiction of Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, O'Meally explores how the worlds of African American jazz, art, and literature have informed one another. He argues that these artists drew on the improvisatory nature of jazz and the techniques of collage not as a way to depict a fractured or broken sense of Blackness but rather to see the Black self as beautifully layered and complex. They developed a shared set of methods and motives driven by the belief that art must involve a sense of community. O'Meally's readings of these artists and their work emphasize how they have not only contributed to understanding of Black history and culture but also provided hope for fulfilling the broken promises of American democracy"--

    Abstract: Der Sammelband stellt die Frage nach den Erscheinungsformen und Ausdrucksweisen des Antisemitismus in der Musik. Als "negative Leitidee der Moderne" ist Antisemitismus in sämtlichen Musikrichtungen zu finden und wird auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen vermittelt: sei es durch Songtexte, Albumcover, Musikvideos, Bühnenauftritte, durch die Musikform bzw. des Stils an sich oder die ideologische und strukturelle Einbindung von Musiker:innen in die extrem rechte Szene bis hin zur Beeinflussung ganzer Musikszenen durch die antisemitische BDS-Kampagne.     Abstract: "Ambient Sufism is a study of the intertwined musical lives of several ritual communities in Tunisia that invoke the healing powers of long-deceased Muslim saints through music-driven trance rituals. Richard C. Jankowsky illuminates the (virtually undocumented) role of women and minorities in shaping the ritual musical ecology of the region, with case studies on men's and women's Sufi orders, Jewish and black Tunisian healing musical troupes, and the popular music of hard-drinking laborers, as well as the cohorts involved in mass-mediated staged spectacles of ritual that continue to inject ritual sounds into the public sphere. He uses the term "ambient Sufism" to illuminate these adjacent ritual practices, each serving as a musical, social, and devotional-therapeutic niche while contributing to a larger, shared ecology of practices surrounding and invoking the figures of saints. And he argues that ritual musical form--that is, the large-scale structuring of ritual through musical organization--has agency; that is, form is revealing and constitutive of experience and encourages particular subjectivities. Ambient Sufism promises many useful ideas for ethnomusicology, anthropology, Islamic and religious studies, and North African studies"--

    Abstract: Music has the universal power to move individuals, peoples and societies. Music is one of the most important signifiers of cultural change. It is also most significant for youth movements and youth cultures. While Islam has a historically and traditionally rich culture of music, religious controversy on the topic of music is still ongoing. However, young Muslims in today’s globalised world seek pop cultural tools such as music, and particularly hip hop music, as way of exploring and expressing their manifold identities, whilst challenging Islamophobia, stigma and racism on the one hand and traditional and religious challenges on the other hand. In this volume, following an international conference with the same title, scholars and young academics from a variety of disciplines seek to explore and highlight the phenomena surrounding the two, somewhat artificially separated, realms of music and religion. The contributions not only look into different genres of music, from Tunisian metal over German female hip hop to Egyptian folk, but take the reader on a journey from continent to countries to cities and rural areas and thus give space and time to a widely neglected area of research: that of Muslim popular culture and young Muslims.

    Abstract: Kurt Reinhard ist einer der bedeutendsten Musikwissenschaftler und Ethnomusikologen, der die Notwendigkeit der transkulturellen Kommunikation frühzeitig erkannte und sich zusammen mit seiner Frau Ursula Reinhard tatkräftig für deren Verwirklichung einsetzte. Beide Leben belegen eindrucksvoll diesen Einsatz. Musikologische Feldforschungen in der Türkei (1955-1993) bildeten die Grundlage einer umfangreichen Sammlung von Quellenmaterialien zur Türkei. Darauf aufbauend entstanden einschlägige systematische und ethnomusikologische Studien, unter anderem zu Musikinstrumenten, zu âşık-Liedern, zur Roma-Musik, zur Geschichte der türkischen Volks- und Kunstmusik. Neben den Grundlagenforschungen und einschlägigen Studien war das Forscher-Ehepaar zugleich bestrebt, den deutsch-türkischen Kulturdialog zu fördern und die transkulturelle Verständigung zu verbessern. Der vorliegende Band bezweckt, das ethnomusikologische Wirken, die Lebensläufe und Bibliographien des Ehepaares Reinhard möglichst umfassend zu dokumentieren und die Verdienste um eine über fünfzigjährige Wirkungs- und Entwicklungsgeschichte, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zur Jahrhundertwende, im Kontext der Vergleichenden Musikwissenschaft zu würdigen.

    Abstract: The present work describes and analyses the causes and the course of the revival of Gaelic traditional music in Scotland in the 20th century, in particular using the musicological and cultural theoretical models by Tamara Livingston and Owe Ronström. The work focuses on the music of the groups Runrig and Capercaillie, both of which, embedded in the sociocultural and cultural-political changes of the “Gaelic Renaissance” in the 1970s and under the influence of Anglo-American popular musical styles, began to create their own hybrid musical forms of expression.〈eng〉

    Abstract: "This book discusses how musicians from Bahia, an emblematic African diasporic location in northeastern Brazil, think about, discuss, compose, rehearse, perform, and stage music inspired by what they perceive to be their own African ancestry. It argues that these musicians assert Afro-Brazilian identities and connect to the African continent and other diasporic places by creatively engaging essentialized notions about African music and culture: instead of mechanically reproducing these tropes, they emphasize them or downplay them. The book theorizes these preconceived notions about African music, culture, and performance as tropes of Africanness, emphasizing that they exist in two interrelated realms: as essentialist ideas in discourse and as concrete practices and sounds. Six commonly encountered tropes of African music are analyzed: the notions that its most important parameter is rhythm and that it is dominated by percussion; that it is meant to be danced to or deeply embodied rather than intellectualized; that it always touches on the sacred; that it is spontaneous and improvisatory; and that it reflects communalism rather than individualism. Through four case studies from Bahia (a jazz big band called Orkestra Rumpilezz, a symphony orchestra called the Orquestra Afrosinfônica, and two berimbau orchestras led by capoeira practitioners), the book demonstrates the nuances of musical creation in the African diaspora, acknowledging the genuine impact that essentialisms have on Bahian music while showing that they may not be an essential part of the musicians' African roots"--

The research aims to dismantle stereotypical understandings of "Eskimos," "Indians," and "Natives" by addressing the following questions: What exactly is "Native" about Native music? What does it mean to sound (or not sound) Native? Who decides? And how can in-depth analyses of Native music that center Indigeneity reframe larger debates of race, power, and representation in twenty-first century American music historiography? Instead of proposing singular truths or facts, this book invites readers to consider the existence of multiple simultaneous truths, a density of truths, all of which are culturally constructed, performed, and in some cases politicized and policed. A sound relations approach endeavors to advance a more Indigenized music studies and a more sounded Indigenous studies that works to move beyond colonial questions of containment - "who counts as Indigenous" and "who decides" - and measurement - "how much Indigenous is this person/performance" - and toward an aesthetics of self-determination and resurgent world-making.

While Islam has a historically and traditionally rich culture of music, religious controversy on the topic of music is still ongoing. However, young Muslims in today's globalised world seek pop cultural tools such as music, and particularly hip hop music, as way of exploring and expressing their manifold identities, whilst challenging Islamophobia, stigma and racism on the one hand and traditional and religious challenges on the other hand. In this volume, following an international conference with the same title, scholars and young academics from a variety of disciplines seek to explore and highlight the phenomena surrounding the two, somewhat artificially separated, realms of music and religion. The contributions not only look into different genres of music, from Tunisian metal over German female hip hop to Egyptian folk, but take the reader on a journey from continent to countries to cities and rural areas and thus give space and time to a widely neglected area of research: that of Muslim popular culture and young Muslims

Kapitels von Ibn Faḍlallāh al-ʿUmarīs (gest. 749/1349) „Masālik al-abṣār fī mamālik al-amṣār" bereit. Diese bedeutende Quelle zu Sängersklavinnen und ihrem Liedrepertoire im Kontext muslimischen Hoflebens von den Abbasiden bis zu den Mamluken liegt mit dieser Monographie zum ersten Mal in einer kommentierten deutschen Übersetzung vor. Dr. phil. Yasemin Gökpinar, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, und Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien, arbeitet u. a. zu arabischer Musiktheorie und Wissenschaftsgeschichte, deren griechischen Quellen, Kodikologie, Textedition, arabisch-islamischer Musikkultur und Literatur.
    Abstract: In "Der ṭarab der Sängersklavinnen", Yasemin Gökpınar presents a text critical edition of the three known manuscripts of the 10th chapter of Ibn Faḍlallāh al-ʿUmarī’s (died 749/1349) "Masālik al-abṣār fī mamālik al-amṣār". In this monograph, she provides an unprecedented commented German translation of this important source on female singer slaves and their song repertoire in the context of Muslim court culture from the Abbasids to the Mamluks. The scientific interests of Dr. phil. Yasemin Gökpinar, Ruhr-University Bochum, and Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, include Arabic music theory and history of sciences, their Greek sources, Arabic manuscript culture, text edition, Arabic-Islamic music culture and literature.
