    Abstract: "Das sowohl politische wie jüdische Opfer, das ich war und bin, kann nicht schweigen, wenn unter dem Banner des Anti-Zionismus der alte miserable Antisemitismus sich wieder hervorwagt." Jean Amérys Essays, die zwischen 1969 und 1976 geschrieben wurden, erschrecken geradezu durch ihre Aktualität. Sie lesen sich in ihrer Prägnanz, als wären sie für den heutigen Tag geschrieben. Ausgehend von seinem Judesein, das ihm von den Nürnberger Gesetzen aufgezwungen wurde, beschreibt Jean Améry seine existentielle Bindung an Israel, seine Solidarität ist jedoch nicht bedingungslos. Und doch ist für ihn Israel das Land, das allen entrechteten Juden der Welt den aufrechten Gang gelehrt hat. Hier spricht sein Schmerz, weil er, von jeher ein Linker, die Neue Linke, die Israel als kolonialistisch betrachtet, nicht mehr erreichen kann: Ihr selbstgerechter Antizionismus steht ihm als unausrottbarer Antisemitismus klar vor Augen.     Abstract: "Medieval documents reveal that for centuries of European history, singing for a person at the moment of death was considered to be the ideal accompaniment to a life's ending. Rituals for the dying were well developed, practiced widely, and thoroughly integrated with music. Indeed, these rituals reveal that music, rather than the Eucharist, held a privileged position at the final breath. Music in Medieval Rituals for the End of Life examines and recovers, to the extent possible, the music sung for the dying during the Middle Ages. The book offers a view of the plainchant repertory through the sources of individual institutions. The first four chapters contain a series of "case studies": close readings of rituals from diverse communities, each as they appear in a single source. The rituals' chants are transcribed into modern notation and analyzed, both for their relationships between text and melody and for their functions within the rituals. Created for the powerful and the poor, the educated and the uneducated, women and men, monastics, clerics, and laity, these manuscripts offer a glimpse into the religious practices that distinguished communities from one another and bound them together within a single tradition. The book provides the first editions of the rituals' chants and considers the functions of the music. Why was music given such a prominent position within the deathbed liturgies? Why did communities gather and sing when a loved one was dying? The manuscripts reveal a lost art of comforting the dying and the grieving"--

In ihnen finden sich metrische und harmonisch-melodische Konzepte sowie grundlegende Neuerungen in der Organisation des Zusammenspiels und im Umgang mit improvisierter Musik, die heute fester Bestandteil des Jazz sind. Der Autor geht den Ursprüngen und Vorläufern dieser Konzepte nach, untersucht die biografischen Bezüge der Protagonisten zu den Konzepten und zum Zeitgeist und betrachtet die Rezeptionsgeschichte der Alben.
    Abstract: The year 1959 saw the release of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out", John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue", Bill Evans' "Portrait in Jazz" and Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz to Come", all style-defining albums that were groundbreaking in the development of jazz. They contain metrical and harmonic-melodic concepts as well as fundamental innovations in the organisation of ensemble playing and the handling of improvised music, which are an integral part of jazz today. The author traces the origins and antecedents of these concepts, examines the protagonists' biographical references to the concepts and the zeitgeist, and looks at the reception history of the albums.

    Abstract: The concept of the generation in today's German culture and literature, and its role in German identity. In the debates since 1945 on German history and culture, the concept of generations has become ever more prominent. Recent and ongoing shifts in how the various generations are seen -- and see themselves -- in relation to historyand to each other have taken on key importance in contemporary German cultural studies. The seismic events of twentieth-century German history are no longer solely first-generational lived experiences but are also historical moments seen through the eyes of successor generations. The generation, seen as a category of memory, thus holds a key to major shifts in German identity. The changing generational perspectives of German writers and filmmakers not onlyreflect but also influence these trends, exposing both the expected differences between generational views and unexpected continuities. Moreover, as younger artists reframe recent history, older generations like the 1968ers are also contributing to these shifts by reassessing their own experiences and cultural contributions. This volume of new essays applies current discourse on generations in German culture to contemporary works dealing with major sociohistorical events since the Nazi period.     Abstract: "The chapters that make up this book recognize through examples from research, practice and evaluation of quality with lived experiences that diverse contemporary popular musics can provide useful tools not just for entertainment and fun, but for learning, growth and healing/wellness. Hip hop, techno, grime, drill and suchlike are contemporary genres that have been stigmatized through association with the BAME community. At the same time, however, these musics are typically the listening diet of choice today in our inner cities. These contemporary musics of the inner-city and their associated music-related activities (e.g., deejaying, beat making, mixtape making but also dance, visual art and more) are celebrated and embraced as extraordinarily powerful tools for building and maintaining academic, social, and emotional competencies. These musics are loved and they can open up opportunities for creativities among those who often feel seriously marginalized. In turn, these musics (and activities associated with them) can provided opportunities to engage and/or support those at the social and educational margins. In other words, the musics at the heart of this book have faced exclusionary pressures but they can also work for inclusion when utilized in educational/pedagogical or therapeutic practices. Der Begriff Widerspruch kann sowohl eine private Unmutsäußerung als auch den rechtlich verankerten Einspruch bezeichnen, aber auch Unvereinbarkeiten oder sich diametral gegenüberstehende Gegensätze. Auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene werden solche Konflikte und Aushandlungsprozesse in Protesten sichtbar, wie jüngst den Anti-Corona-Demonstrationen, oder in Petitionen und Online-Kampagnen, wie #metoo oder #blacklivesmatter. Widersprüche sind feste Bestandteile gesellschaftlicher Aushandlungsprozesse sowie wissenschaftlicher Forschung. Die Autor:innen zeigen die vielen Facetten des Begriffs auf und beleuchten diese hinsichtlich ihrer Potenziale, medialen Ausprägungen und Wirkungsformen.

But in spite of attempts by influential scholars and political leaders to limit or control musical expression, music and sound permeated all layers of the social structure. Lisa Nielson here presents a rich social history of music, musicianship and the role of musicians in the early Islamicate era. Focusing primarily on Damascus, Baghdad and Jerusalem, Lisa Nielson draws on a wide variety of textual sources written for and about musicians and their professional/private environments -- including chronicles, literary sources, memoirs and musical treatises -- as well as the disciplinary approaches of musicology to offer insights into musical performances and the lives of musicians. In the process, the book sheds light onto the dynamics of medieval Islamicate courts, as well as how slavery, gender, status and religion intersected with music in courtly life. Their chapters explore an acoustemology of intimacy, woman-centered eroticism generated through musical performance, desire and longing in ethnographic knowledge production, and listening as intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, authors engage with and question the fetishization of race in jazz; examine conceptions of vulgarity and profanity in movement and dance-ethnography; and address pain, trauma, and violation, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual, or political. Authors in this volume strive toward empathetic, ethical, and creative ethnographic engagements that summon vulnerability and healing. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled. Dabei spiegelt die Gewichtung der Beiträge in dem Band allerdings auch wider, dass sich fremd- und primärsprachliche Phraseodidaktik in einem unterschiedlichen Tempo entwickeln: Während die fachdidaktischen Diskurse im fremdsprachlichen Bereich vielfältig und fortgeschritten sind, ist es in der primärsprachlichen Phraseodidaktik noch nicht durchschlagskräftig gelungen, den viel zitierten "Dornröschenschlaf" (Peter Kühn) zu beenden. Gleichwohl eröffnet dieser Band nicht nur ein Spektrum heutiger fremdsprachlicher Phraseodidaktik, sondern bietet auch für die primärsprachliche Phraseodidaktik richtungsweisende Beiträge. How Hip Hop Became Hit Pop examines the programming practices at commercial radio stations in the 1980s and early 1990s to uncover how the radio industry facilitated hip hop's introduction into the musical mainstream. Constructed primarily by the Top 40 radio format, the musical mainstream featured mostly white artists for mostly white audiences. With the introduction of hip hop to these programs, the radio industry was fundamentally altered, as stations struggled to incorporate the genre's diverse audience. At the same time, as artists negotiated expanding audiences and industry pressure to make songs fit within the confines of radio formats, the sound of hip hop changed. Drawing from archival research, Amy Coddington shows how the racial structuring of the radio industry influenced the way hip hop was sold to the American public, and how the genre's growing popularity transformed ideas about who constitutes the mainstream.

    Abstract: "Reform, Notation and Ottoman music in Early 19th Century Istanbul presents the first complete set of transcription and edition of Euterpe (1830) from Byzantine neumatic notation into the modified staff notation used by classical Turkish music and is accompanied by a substantial examination of the related historical, theoretical and musical topics. Through a series of Ottoman/Turkish classical vocal music compositions that can be dated to 18th and 19th centuries, Euterpe and related sources reinforce a much broader picture of musical practice and transmission in which we clearly see that the Greek and Turkish traditions are linked. Reform, Notation and Ottoman music in Early 19th Century Istanbul is presented in two parts: historical discussion and musical analysis, and complete transcription and edition of Euterpe. This book will appeal to music scholars and university students interested in minorities, cosmopolitanism in the Middle East and Balkans, the relationship between music and national identity, musical notation, classical Ottoman/Turkish music, Byzantine music, and, most significantly, ethnomusicology"--

    Abstract: "Directly addressing the underrepresentation of Black composers in core music curricula, Expanding the Canon: Black Composers in the Music Theory Classroom aims to both demonstrate why diversification is badly needed and help faculty expand their teaching with practical, classroom-oriented lesson plans that focus on teaching music theory with music by Black composers. This collection of 21 chapters is loosely arranged to resemble a typical music theory curriculum, with topics progressing from basic to advanced and moving from fundamentals, diatonic harmony, and chromatic harmony to form, popular music, and music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Some chapters focus on segments of the traditional music theory sequence, while others consider a single style or composer. Contributors address both methods to incorporate the music of Black composers into familiar topics, and ways to rethink and expand the purview of the music theory curriculum. A foreword by Philip Ewell and an introductory narrative by Teresa L. Reed describing her experiences as an African American student of music set the volume in wider context. Incorporating a wide range of examples by composers across classical, jazz, and popular genres, this book helps bring the rich and varied body of music by Black composers into the core of music theory pedagogy and offers a vital resource for all faculty teaching music theory and analysis."
