    Kurzfassung: Some manufacturing activities are among the most difficult human activities to make climate neutral and they are typically regionally concentrated. Across Europe these regions are often socioeconomically relatively weak. Yet these sectors provide relatively well-paid jobs in many of these regions. Some of these regions may also have more difficult access to infrastructure to provide the hydrogen, carbon capture and storage and zero-emission freight, which can be important to some of these activities. Industrial transitions to climate neutrality therefore have regional development implications. Since regions differ in their socio-economic conditions, understanding these regional development implications will help policy makers prepare a just transition. This publication identifies manufacturing activities that are particularly difficult to decarbonise and the transformations they require. It shows how these activities are distributed across European regions, focusing on employment at emission-intensive production locations. It identifies conditions for getting access to needed infrastructure and how access conditions differ across regions. It investigates the socio-economic vulnerabilities of affected regions, their manufacturing businesses and workers. In some regions, workers and firms may be particularly vulnerable, for example, because of low-skill jobs, type of employment contract or low productivity.

    Kurzfassung: Growing up in socio-economic disadvantage has important and long-lasting effects on children’s lives. Children from disadvantaged households often fall behind in many areas of well-being and development, with effects that continue to limit their opportunities and outcomes – including their health and labour market outcomes – long after they reach adulthood. Drawing on Europe-wide survey data from 27 countries, this paper explores how childhood socio-economic disadvantage affects later adult labour market and health outcomes, and evaluates the country-level GDP-equivalent cost of childhood disadvantage due to lost employment, lost earnings, and lost health, as well as the costs of lost government revenue and benefit spending. Results point to large costs for societies from childhood socio-economic disadvantage, totalling on average the equivalent of 3.4% of GDP annually.

    Kurzfassung: During COVID-19 lockdowns it became visible that migrants are often important in sectors that are crucial for the functioning of everyday life. Informed by this experience, this note provides an assessment of the role of foreign-born workers in essential services (referred to as migrant key workers) at regional level for 31 European countries. It examines the share of migrant key workers in regional labour markets, their importance in jobs with different skill requirements, and differences between EU and non-EU migrants. Migrants play a crucial role in health care, where 23% of doctors and 14% of nurses are foreign-born. In cities such as London or Brussels, around half of all doctors and nurses are migrants. Overall, capital regions have the highest share of migrant key workers (20%). Similarly, cities rely more on migrant key workers than other areas, especially in low-skilled occupations where migrants make up 25% of workers.

For policymakers who struggle to decide which initiatives to prioritise for investment, understanding the potential of different quality strategies in their unique settings is key. This volume, developed by the Observatory together with OECD, provides an overall conceptual framework for understanding and applying strategies aimed at improving quality of care. Crucially, it summarizes available evidence on different quality strategies and provides recommendations for their implementation. This book is intended to help policy-makers to understand concepts of quality and to support them to evaluate single strategies and combinations of strategies. Quality of care is a political priority and an important contributor to population health. This book acknowledges that "quality of care" is a broadly defined concept, and that it is often unclear how quality improvement strategies fit within a health system, and what their particular contribution can be. This volume elucidates the concepts behind multiple elements of quality in healthcare policy (including definitions of quality, its dimensions, related activities, and targets), quality measurement and governance and situates it all in the wider context of health systems research. By so doing, this book is designed to help policy-makers prioritize and align different quality initiatives and to achieve a comprehensive approach to quality improvement.

    Kurzfassung: The first years of life lay the foundations for a child’s future development and learning. Many countries have increased their financial support for provision of early childhood education and care (ECEC) over the past years. More recently, the focus of debate has been shifting from expanding access to affordable ECEC to enhancing its quality. A growing body of research suggests that the magnitude of the benefits for children will depend on the level of quality of early childhood services, with especially strong evidence in the case of disadvantaged children. In light of budgetary constraints, policy makers require the latest knowledge base of the quality dimensions that are most important for ensuring children's development and early learning. However, current research is often narrow in focus or limited to programme-level or national-level conclusions. This book expands the knowledge base on this topic. It draws lessons from a cross-national literature review and meta-analysis of the relationship between early childhood education and care structure (e.g. child-staff ratios, staff training and qualifications), process quality (i.e. the quality of staff-child interactions and developmental activities), and links to child development and learning. This report concludes with key insights, as well as avenues for further research. It was co-funded by the European Union.

    Kurzfassung: Migration flows are profoundly changing the composition of classrooms. Results from the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) reveal that in 2015, almost one in four 15-year-old students in OECD countries reported that they were either foreign-born or had at least one foreign-born parent. Between 2003 and 2015, the share of students who had either migrated or who had a parent who had migrated across international borders grew by six percentage points, on average across OECD countries. The Resilience of Students with an Immigrant Background: Factors that Shape Well-being reveals some of the difficulties students with an immigrant background encounter and where they receive the support they need. The report provides an in-depth analysis of the risk and protective factors that can undermine or promote the resilience of immigrant students. It explores the role that education systems, schools and teachers can play in helping these students integrate into their communities, overcome adversity, and build their academic, social, emotional and motivational resilience.

    Kurzfassung: This report provides an overview of the main characteristics and structure of the current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and its developments in the last 25 years in a changing environment within and outside the EU. Drawing on material presented at the OECD Workshop on the Disaggregated Impacts of CAP Reform, held on 10-11 March 2010, and model-based scenarios, it analyses the impacts of policy changes on production, trade, land use, farm structure, the environment and some aspects of rural development, using changes in the level and composition of OECD indicators of support, notably the Producer Support Estimate (PSE). This report further suggests improvements in the market orientation, competitiveness and risk management at all levels of the food chain, and pleads for clarifying the link between policy measures and objectives through better targeting, and strengthening evidence on which to base policies.

    Kurzfassung: Why do some regions grow faster than others, and in ways that do not always conform to economic theory? This is a central issue in today’s economic climate, when policy makers are looking for ways to stimulate new and sustainable growth. OECD work suggests that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to regional growth policy. Rather, regions grow in very varied ways and the simple concentration of resources in a place is not sufficient for long-term growth. This report draws on OECD analysis of regional data (including where growth happens, country-by-country), policy reviews and case studies. It argues that it is how investments are made, regional assets used and synergies exploited that can make the difference. Public investment should prioritise longer-term impacts on productivity growth and combine measures in an integrated way. This suggests an important role for regional policies in shaping growth and economic recovery policies, but also challenges policy makers to implement policy reforms.

    Kurzfassung: Les liaisons terrestres entre l’Europe et l’Asie peuvent constituer dans un certain nombre de cas une alternative valable à la voie maritime. Cependant la mise en place de liaisons terrestres efficaces entre l’Europe et l’Asie nécessite des décisions politiques appropriées. Celles-ci portent notamment sur la mise à disposition d’infrastructures de transport adéquates et la levée des obstacles réglementaires ou institutionnels qui empêchent le développement de services efficients de transport. Cette publication contient le document approuvé par les Ministres ainsi qu’un rapport qui a servi de support au débat ministériel de Moscou et qui fait le point sur l’évolution des échanges Europe-Asie et leurs conséquences sur les transports. Dans cette publication sont également reproduits le texte du plan d’action approuvé par ces mêmes Ministres afin de faciliter le transport intermodal entre l’Europe et l’Asie ainsi que les conclusions d’un séminaire organisé précédemment à Kiev sur « L’intermodalité Europe-Asie : pertinence et potentiels».

    Kurzfassung: Crime in road transport is a serious and growing problem. The extent of crime involving goods and goods vehicles is difficult to estimate, but data in some countries show that up to 1% of the commercial fleet is stolen each year, at an annual cost of many millions of euros. In a study of 23 European countries, this report describes the modes of theft of commercial vehicles and goods most prevalent in the 1990s, outlines the various methods used to record highway theft and draws attention to the statistical difficulties involved in measuring the phenomenon. It lists existing and potential security improvements for road freight vehicles, such as equipment to prevent vehicles from being stolen (anti-theft devices), and equipment to track and recover stolen vehicles (after-theft systems). This report results from two ECMT studies on "Theft of goods and goods vehicles" and "Improving security for road freight vehicles". It includes various ECMT Ministerial statements and policy decisions on the subject.

    Kurzfassung: Au cours des dernières années, le transport intercontinental a connu une véritable révolution : l’expansion considérable de la conteneurisation, le développement des mégatransporteurs, des navires porte-conteneurs toujours plus gros et la massification des flux en sont autant de signes tangibles. Ces changements se sont traduits par un abaissement considérable des coûts du transport maritime qui a rendu les pays lointains beaucoup plus accessibles. Le transport terrestre est donc souvent devenu le maillon le plus onéreux de la chaîne de transport en trafic international, d'où la pression croissante des armateurs pour contrôler ce secteur d'activité. Sur terre, la route reste dominante, mais face à la congestion des infrastructures, le rail et la voie d’eau peuvent jouer un rôle. Dans quelles conditions ces deux derniers modes peuvent-ils prendre une part plus importante dans les transports terrestres ? Il faut savoir que faute d'un réseau spécifiquement dédié au fret, le rail ne peut pas vraiment être compétitif tandis que la navigation fluviale ne pourra jouer un rôle significatif que si elle parvient à diminuer ses coûts de transbordement. Une plus grande concurrence au sein de ces deux modes de transport ne pourrait-elle engendrer des gains de productivité et de qualité de service ? La Table Ronde a permis d'aborder l’ensemble des questions relatives à la compétitivité des modes de transport terrestre en dégageant des lignes directrices pour l’action des pouvoirs publics en matière de desserte des ports maritimes.

    Kurzfassung: This book discusses the full economic benefits - and costs - of transport infrastructure and explores ways to make good estimates of the full impact of planned investments on regional and national economies. It argues for proper account to be taken of all relevant economic weaknesses -- those the project is designed to address such as local monopoly pricing, those associated with use of the infrastructure such as environmental externalities, and possible unintended consequences such as impacts on local labour markets. Care must also be taken to verify that net benefits are likely to accrue to those that the project was intended to benefit. Building on recent groundbreaking work in the United Kingdom this publication suggests ways to improve traditional cost-benefit assessments, overcoming reservations that have inhibited the use of CBA in many countries. The main report is completed with examinations of transport project assessment approaches in France, Germany, the United Kingdom and across Europe together with a discussion of an approach to determining optimal levels of investment in transport infrastructure for maximising socio-economic welfare.

It analyses issues of monopoly, scale economies, competition, mergers, ownership and the structure of the rail industry. The need for regulation differs by market and, together with political constraints, this means that regulatory models can not be transferred wholesale from one continent to another. However, each region provides important lessons for reforms currently under consideration in all ECMT and OECD countries.

    Kurzfassung: Although deregulation is well under way in the transport sector, regular coach services are still largely regulated. Governments see them as potentially competing with rail transport services. However, in countries that have had some experience with deregulation the outcome has clearly been positive (except for local short-distance services). The Round Table began with a review of regular interurban coach services based on case studies in countries which had adopted an original approach. This report shows the industry in a totally new light. One of its main findings is that there is a specific market for customers that have no other means of transport. Opening up this market would benefit the most economically disadvantaged sectors of the population. But that is not the only lesson to be learned from this Round Table.

    Kurzfassung: Environmental impact assessments are an essential component of making decisions on transport infrastructure investments. Traditional procedures have proved ineffective for impacts that go beyond the scope of projects in isolation. Strategic environmental assessment has emerged in response, to address large scale effects including impacts on traffic across networks, impacts on climate change and biodiversity and the impacts of policy decisions as opposed simply to individual projects.     Kurzfassung: NGOs have moved out of the "amateur" world in which they were once confined into, in many cases, highly professional activities. This statistical analysis demonstrates that there are thousands of development NGOs in European countries with as much as 7.3 billion at their disposal. Supported by a large number of tables and graphs, as well as detailed, individual country surveys, the author provides the first-ever such study of what has become a late-twentieth, early twenty-first century phenomenon.     Kurzfassung: Pollution from transport is being cut substantially through exhaust emissions regulations and vehicle manufacturers’ investments in cleaner technologies. The benefits of these improvements, however, are delayed as car fleet renewal takes a decade on average in Europe. Car scrappage schemes can be used to accelerate the uptake of new, cleaner vehicles. This publication analyses the effectiveness of these programmes in protecting the environment and reviews the schemes introduced to date in Europe and North America. Three complementary issues are addressed to help make pragmatic recommendations:- What are the effects of scrapping schemes on the car market and the national economy?- What are the effects of these programmes on the environment?- And can scrappage schemes be useful in former socialist countries?

    Kurzfassung: Das Dorfbild der an den Flüssen gelegenen Siedlungen der Ngaju-Dayak wird durch eine Vielzahl von Holzobjekten und -skulpturen geprägt, die in enger Verbindung zum Totenkult stehen. Der Film berichtet über ihre kultische Bedeutung, zeigt das Schnitzen neuer, aber auch verwitterte alte Figuren, die für die Dörfer nördlich der Stadt Sampit in ihren wichtigsten Formen dokumentiert werden: Die Hampatong - Menschenfiguren mit Stellvertreterfunktion; die Sandong-Tulang - auf Pfosten gestellte Beinhäuschen mit der Weltenschlange Naga am Giebel; zurückgelassene Masken an Grabstellen sowie den auf hohen Masten thronenden Nashornvogel als Verkörperung des Obergottes Mahaltala.
    Kurzfassung: The "villagescapes" of the settlements of the Ngaju-Dayak, which lie on rivers, are characterised by a multitude of wooden objects and sculptures, which are closely linked to the cult of the dead. The film reports on their cultic importance, shows the carving of new, but also weathered old, figures, which are documented for the villages north to the city of Sampit in their most important forms. The Hampatong human figures, which have a representation function; the Sandong-Tulang, charnel houses built on posts with Naga, the world serpent, on their gables; abandoned masks on grave sites as well as the rhinoceros bird enthroned on high masts as the embodiment of the head god, Mahaltala.

    Kurzfassung: This seminar, which took place on 2-3 October 1997 at the Josefow Conference Centre near Warsaw, set out to define the role and place of communication in the field of road safety, examine the different strategies of communication and identify their limits. The seminar was attended by 130 experts from 23 countries with ECMT membership or observer status. The discussions established that communication is an essential element of a global road safety policy in that it aims to inform, alert, educate, convince and ultimately alter people’s attitudes and behaviour. The resources employed and the channels of communication used can differ from country to country, depending on the topic addressed, the national culture and the goals to be achieved. Communication cannot be an end in itself, however: it can only be the complement of other measures. It must have a time frame within which the objectives set have to be attained. Evaluation of communication effectiveness is likewise essential.

    Kurzfassung: This report on the current state of combined transport in Europe begins with an overview of combined transport in 30 European countries of the ECMT. It deals with both Central and Eastern European Countries that have recently become Members and the long-standing Member countries for which the most recent developments have been highlighted through the updating of a 1992 study on the improvements of main international piggyback links. The scope of the study, beyond road and rail, has been extended to include inland waterways and short-sea shipping, thus permitting a better evaluation of the current weaknesses of the sector and the possible improvements. On the basis of this report, the Council of Ministers of the ECMT has adopted a series of recommendations directed at all parties concerned in the public and private sectors, at both national and international level, regarding certain elements which are needed to achieve a significant improvement in combined transport and to ensure the sustainable development of the latter. These recommendations are also included in this publication.

    Kurzfassung: In einem vielschichtigen Panorama zeichnet der Film das Bild des deutschen Dorfes Ófalu in Südungarn, dessen 428 Einwohner bis heute die herkömmliche Lebensart bewahrt haben. Besuche im Kindergarten und bei einer Familie dokumentieren die lebendige Zweisprachigkeit, ebenso Äußerungen von Dorfbewohnern, die über die Handwerkstradition, aber auch von Verschleppungsschicksalen der Nachkriegszeit berichten. Karfreitags- und Auferstehungsprozession zeigen die Volksfrömmigkeit, eine Hochzeitsfeier und ein Wirtshausbesuch das Dorfleben mit deutschen Liedern, Musik und Tanz. Die Frage nach der Zukunft findet neben einer vorsichtigen Tourismusorientierung ihre Antwort aus dem Munde eines Bewohners: "Wenn sie bleiben und zusammenhalten...".

Kindergarten, a bilingual family, comments on hand crafts and also the post war period. Good Friday and resurrection traditions showing puritanism, a marriage. Im Zentrum steht das Töpferhandwerk des Josef Teimel, das heute durch den florierenden Tourismus guten Absatz findet. Bei Veranstaltungen wie dem Kirchweihfest oder beim winterlichen Schweineschlachten wird der Zusammenhalt der Dorfgemeinde unmittelbar augenfällig.

    Kurzfassung: Zwei Männer spielen mit jeweils zwei Bambusstöckchen auf dem Aufschlagidiophon ketuk, einem dicken Bambusrohr, das an einem Ende in der Verlängerung der Trommel mit zwei Stäbchen, die einander gegenüberliegen, und einem in Längsrichtung verlaufenden Schlitz versehen ist. Die Schlitztrommel wird auf den Reisfeldern zum Vertreiben der Vögel und zur Selbstunterhaltung gespielt.
    Kurzfassung: Two men strike each with two bamboo sticks the idiophone ketuk, a thick bamboo cane with a longitudinal slit and two small sticks fastened at one end opposite to each other in prolongation of the drum. The slit drum is played in the rice-fields to keep birds away and for entertainment.

    Kurzfassung: In einer Almhütte wird in einem Kessel über der offenen Feuerstelle Milch erhitzt und durch Zugabe von Lab und Kultur zum Gerinnen gebracht. Die so entstandene Käsemasse wird in eine Form gefüllt und etwa 24 Stunden gepreßt. Bevor der Käse in ein Salzbad gelegt wird, lagert er ca. 12 Stunden im Keller.
    Kurzfassung: In an Alpine hut milk is heated in a kettle above an open fire and made to curdle by adding rennin and cultures. The cheese mass that is thus formed is filled into a mould and pressed for approximately 24 hours. Before the cheese is placed in a saline bath, it is stored for approximately 12 hours in a cellar.

    Kurzfassung: Am Vormittag bringen Mitglieder der Familie Sembiring an einem heiligen Platz den Ahnen ein Opfer dar. Zwei Frauen stellen den Kontakt zu den Geistern her. Am Nachmittag wird bei der heiligen Quelle - Wohnsitz eines Ahnengeistes - wiederum ein Opfer dargebracht und die rituelle Haarwaschung durchgeführt. Am Abend und in der Nacht werden im Haus die Zeremonialtänze aufgeführt. Im Verlauf des Festes werden wiederholt Frauen von verschiedenen Geistern, die sich am Fest beteiligen, besessen.
    Kurzfassung: In the morning members of the Sembiring family offer a sacrifice to the ancestors in a holy place. Two women enter in relations to the spirits. In the afternoon a further offering is made at the sacred spring - seat of an ancestor spirit - and a ritual hair-washing takes place. In the evening and in the night the ceremonial dances are performed in the house. In the course of the feast women are repeatedly possessed by different spirits taking part in the feast.

    Kurzfassung: Die Zeremonie (wörtlich übersetzt: 'Reis auf den Kopf legen') wird begangen, wenn jemand wieder in die Gemeinschaft aufgenommen wird. Frau Ginting wird nach einem Krankenhausaufenthalt von Angehörigen am Dorfende empfangen. Nach Segenswünschen werden sie und ihr Ehemann mit Goldschmuck und Zeremonialtüchern geschmückt. Begleitet von Gendang-Musik werden sie zum Haus der Familie geführt. Die Guro Sibaso locken die Lebenskraft (Tendi) zur Stärkung der Frau mit weißen Tüchern an. Auf dem Tanzplatz werden Adat-Tänze getanzt. Mit einem gemeinsamen Essen wird der zeremonielle Teil des Festes abgeschlossen.
    Kurzfassung: The ceremony (literally translated: 'to put rice on the head') is performed at a person's returning to a community. Mrs. Ginting, returning from hospital, is received by her relatives on the border of the village. Blessings are pronounced and she and her husband are decorated with gold jewellery and ceremonial cloths. Accompanied by gendang music, they are conducted to the family's house. The guru sibaso attract with white cloths the vital power (tendi) to strengthen the woman. Adat dances are performed on the dancing-ground. A common meal concludes the ceremonial part of the feast.

    Kurzfassung: Die Teilnehmer des alle vier Jahre durchgeführten Mittwinterbrauches sammeln sich am 5. Januar in Badgastein zum Umzug. Der Perchtenzug hält vor den Häusern, die Perchten begrüßen die Bewohner durch einen Tanz und erweisen ihnen die Ehre durch eine Verneigung. Nach Segenswünschen des Perchtenhauptmannes zieht die Gruppe weiter. Am Umzug beteiligen sich außer der "schönen" Perchten auch Schreckgestalten, wie der maskierte und pelzbekleidete Klaubauf, aber auch sonstige Brauchsfiguren wie Bärenführer, Hanswurst, Habergeiß, Händler, Schleifersmann, Zapfmandel und andere. An zwei Tagen werden die Häuser der Ortschaften in der Gastein besucht. Am 6. Januar wird das Perchtenlaufen in Bad Hofgastein beendet.
    Kurzfassung: The participants of this midwinter custom, which is carried out every four years, gather in Bad Gastein for the parade on 5 January. The Perchtenlauf procession stops in front of the houses, the Perchten greet the inhabitants with a dance and honour them by bowing. After the Perchten leader has given his good wishes, the group moves on. Other than the "beautiful" Perchten, dreadful figures, such as the "Klaubauf", who is masked and dressed in fur, but also other traditional figures such as the bear leader, "Hanswurst", "Habergeis", the trader, "Schleifersmann", barman, and others also participate in the procession. The houses of the towns in Gastein are visited for two days. The Perchenlauf activities ends in Bad Hofgastein on 6 January.

    Kurzfassung: Die Teilnehmer der Haarwaschzeremonie (vgl. Film E 2963) treffen im Haus ein. Mit dem ersten Tanz werden die Schutz- und Ahnengeister gebeten, am Fest teilzunehmen. Nach dem Geisteranrufungstanz wird das Festessen eingenommen. Adat-Tänze und weitere Geisteranrufungstänze folgen. Nach einem Orakel mit hartgekochtem Ei werden Unterhaltungstänze getanzt. Zum Tanz spielt eine Gendang-Musikgruppe.
    Kurzfassung: The participants of the hair-washing-ceremony arrive in the house. The first dance is performed to invite the protective and the ancestral spirits to take part in the feast. A dance with invocation of the spirits takes place, followed by the meal. Adat dances and further dances with invocation of the spirits are performed. An oracle with a hard-boiled egg is consulted, followed by entertainment dances. The dances are accompanied by a gendang music group.

    Kurzfassung: Nach einer Einführung über die Landschaft und Dorfanlage wird der Alltag skizziert: Dorfschule, Aussaat am Brandrodungsfeld, Sammeln von Naturgummi, Reisschälen, Reisstampfen, Flechten, Schmiedearbeiten in einer Freilandschmiede, Einkauf im Dorfladen, Fischen, Kochen, Kaffeesortieren und Zubereiten von Betelpriem. Nach einem Unterhaltungstanz der Frauen und einem Kriegstanz eines alten Mannes schließt der Film die Vorstellung des Dorfes mit der Abendstimmung am Fluß.
    Kurzfassung: After a general description of the village follows a sketch of everyday life: the village school, sowing in the slash and burn clearings, collection of latex, winnowing rice, weaving, the open-air blacksmith, the village shop, cooking and the preparation of betel. The film closes with an entertainment dance (women), an old man's war dance and the atmospheric sunset at the river.

    Kurzfassung: Nagybörzsöny/Deutschpilsen liegt nördlich von Budapest und gilt als deutsche Siedlung. Deutsche Bergleute bauten hier seit dem 13. Jh. Gold und Silber ab. Nach Aufgabe des Bergbaus im 18. Jh. und Zerfall der Weinbaukultur im 19. Jh. geriet das Dorf in wirtschaftliche Isolation. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ging der Gebrauch der deutschen Sprache stark zurück. Der Film zeigt Bauten der früheren Weinbaukultur, die Kirchen, die zwei Heimatmuseen, eine Köhlerei im Walde und führt durch Gespräche und Erinnerungen zum Sprachgebrauch und zur Problematik der deutschen Muttersprache. Organisierte Pflege der Tradition wird in Szenen über eine Probe des Frauenchores und der deutschen Tanzgruppe vorgestellt.
    Kurzfassung: Nagybörzsöny/German Pilsen is located the north of Budapest and is considered to be a German settlement. German miners have mined gold and silver there since the 13th century. After mining was abandoned in the 18th century and decline of viniculture in the 19th century, the village fell into economic isolation. After World War II the use of the German language declined. The film shows buildings from the former wine-growing culture, the churches, the two local history museums, a charcoal plant in the forest, and then proceeds to language use and to the problems of the German mother tongue via discussions and reminiscences. Organised cultivation of this tradition is presented in scenes on a rehearsal of the women's choir and of the German dance group.

    Kurzfassung: Haanglireh, der 52jährige Dorfschmied von Padua, und sein Helfer schmieden in etwa 3stündiger Arbeit ein ca. 50 cm langes Haumesser: Schmieden und Härten der Klinge, Schleifen der Schneide und Schnitzen des Griffes. Der 〈i〉parang〈/i〉, der im Alltag als Arbeitswerkzeug dient, wird mit Hilfe einer Schnur um die Taille gebunden.
    Kurzfassung: Haanglireh, the 52-year-old village smith of Padua, and his assistant shape a hewing knife about 50 centimetres long. The work takes three hours and proceeds in the following stages: forging and tempering the blade, grinding the edge, and carving the handle. The 〈i〉parang〈/i〉, used as a tool in everyday life, is attached to a cord about the waist.

    Kurzfassung: Durch Anbau, Verarbeitung und Vermarktung von Kraut ist Vecsés landesweit als wohlhabendes Dorf bekannt. Der Film stellt die Frage der Identität der deutschen Bewohner des Dorfes. Hierbei werden verschiedene Lebenssituationen gezeigt: Verarbeitung von Kraut, Vermarktung in Budapest, Verarbeitung von Weintrauben für den Eigenbedarf, die LPG als Wirtschaftsfaktor und Kulturträger, Pflege der Tradition in der Tanzgruppe, Deutschunterricht in der Schule und eine deutsche Hochzeit. Durch Interviews wird das Bild abgerundet.
    Kurzfassung: The planting, processing and marketing of cabbage has made the village Vecsés well-known as comfortably-off. The film frames the question as to the identity of the villagers - and includes various everyday situations: making sauerkraut, market day in Budapest, wine-making, the collective as the centre of economy and culture, traditional dances, German lessons at school and German weddings.     Kurzfassung: Der vor zwei Jahren verstorbene Mann Hermanto Juris wird anläßlich eines Totenfestes (Tiwah), das 6 Tage lang andauert, endgültig verabschiedet und in das Totenreich geleitet. Die vom Gewohnheitsrecht (Adat) verbindlich vorgeschriebene Zeremonie wird von 6 Priesterinnen (Wadian) durchgeführt. Am Fest beteiligen sich außer der Familie auch die weitere Verwandtschaft, die Freunde und Bekannte.
    Kurzfassung: A death feast is held in Dorong village. The corpse had been buried two years before, hair and nails of the deceased, called rapu, had been placed separately on top of the coffin. This rapu is now dug up, since the family finally have the means to arrange the feast. In the course of the feast the priestesses of the village, wadiam, communicate with the soul of the deceased until now in a transitional realm. Only after the tiwah is performed does the soul leave for the country of the dead, to join the ancestors and remain there definitely. During the tiwah the rapu is kept in the house of the dead man's daughter. Ritual cock-fights, offerings of pigs and chickens accompany the tiwah. The tiwah is performed according to the adat of the Kaharingan religion.

    Kurzfassung: One morning, several men, who are making hardwood arrowheads for unfeathered arrows while they talk or sing, are sitting in front of the men's house. They use stone adzes, knives, the incisors of a rodent as well as rough plant leaves for tools.

Auf diese Weise bleiben die Larven an dem dichten Pflanzenbewuchs hängen und können in Tragenetzen eingesammelt werden. Anschließend ziehen die Mädchen einige Wasserpflanzen hoch und sammeln auch die darunter befindlichen Kleintiere ein.
    Kurzfassung: Girls from Munggona are wading through a pond and splashing up the water with their feet. In this manner the insect larvae in the water get caught in the thick plant growth and can be collected in dip nets. Then the girls lift a number of water plants and also collect the small animals under them.

    Kurzfassung: Der 56jährige Reisbauer Umi Tupai sitzt auf der Plattform seines Hauses in Palangan und schnitzt aus einem weichen Holz (Palantan) eine kleine Hampatong-Figur. Die Figur weist die Zeichen einer Schwangerschaft auf. In den Händen hält sie ein Kästchen, in dem das Zubehör für das Betelkauen aufbewahrt wird. Der Schnitzer benötigt ca. 3 Stunden für die Arbeit. Er ist der einzige Mann im Dorf, der diese Kunst beherrscht.
    Kurzfassung: Seated on the platform of his house at Palangan, the 56-year-old rice-grower Umi Tupai carves a small hampatong figure in soft pelantan wood. The female figure shows the signs of pregnancy. In the hands she holds a small box containing the utensils for betel-chewing. It takes the carver three hours to achieve the figure. He is the only man in the village skilled in this art.

Zuerst wird die Kalebasse, deren unteres Ende mit einer Schnurschlinge fixiert wird, durch die man den Hodensack zieht, aufgesteckt. Um das obere Drittel der Kalebasse wird eine Rotanschnur befestigt, die um die Hüfte gelegt wird. Die feste Rotanwicklung wird auf einem breiten Blatt um die Taille gewickelt.
    Kurzfassung: Two married men of approximately 45 and 35 years of age, respectively, from Malingdam, take off their penis gourds to show how they are put on. First, the gourd, whose lower end is attached with a cord sling through which one slips the scrotum, is put on. A rotang cord is attached around the upper third of the gourd; the former is put around the hips. The fixed rotang wrapping is wound around the waist on a broad leaf.

    Kurzfassung: In Abwesenheit der Männer tragen Frauen ein verendetes Schwein zum Schlachteplatz, zerlegen es mit einem Bambusmesser, sengen die Borsten an, stellen Würste her. Ein zweites Schwein wird gebracht und verarbeitet. Fleisch und Würste werden zusammen mit Gemüse in zwei Erdöfen gegart. Ab und zu erscheinen Männer, die sich wegen Tabuvorschriften im Walde aufhalten, um Ratschläge zu erteilen. Die Frauen beklagen den Verlust der Schweine und singen Klagelieder.
    Kurzfassung: In the absence of men, women carry a dead pig to the cutting place, dissecte it using a bamboo knife, singe the bristles and make sausages. A second pig is brought and processed. Together with vegetable, meat and sausages are cooked in two earth ovens. Men, required to stay in the wood by taboo rules, appear off and on to give advice. The women lament and bewail the death of the pigs.

    Kurzfassung: Vor dem Männerhaus in Munggona halten sich mehrere Männer auf. Sie unterhalten sich und beschäftigen sich mit verschiedenen Arbeiten. Einer von ihnen glättet das Halsstück einer Kalebasse (Lagenaria siceraria) außen mit einem Steinbeil und innen mit einem Holzstab. Um das geschlossene Ende wird ein Ring aus pflanzlichem Material geflochten; das offene Ende der fertigen Peniskalebasse wird mit einer Schnurhalterung versehen.
    Kurzfassung: A number of men are in front of the men's house in Munggona. The are talking and working at various jobs. One of them is smoothing the neck piece of a calabash gourd (Lagenaria siceraria); the exterior with a stone adze and the interior with a wooden rod. A ring is woven around the closed end with plant materials; the open end of the penis gourd is equipped with a support cord.

Salap verziert einen Ohrpflock, indem er mit dem Schneidezahn eines Nagetieres Verzierungen in den Bambus kratzt. Die Verzierungen bestreicht er mit Hautfett, um die Musterung hervortreten zu lassen. Er steckt den Ohrpflock in sein linkes Ohrläppchen. Während er arbeitet, spielt ein anderer Mann auf einer Maultrommel.
    Kurzfassung: Several boys and men are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam/Imarin. Salap is decorating an ear peg by scratching decorations in the bamboo with a rodent incisor. He smears dermal fat into the decorations so that the pattern will stand out. He sticks the ear peg into his left ear lobe. While he is working, another man is playing a Jew's harp.

    Kurzfassung: Ausschnitt aus einem mehrtägigen Besuchsfest in Munggona (s. Film E 2803). In der Nacht, bevor die Gäste eintreffen, tanzen Männer in Kreisformation und singen dazu. Der Vortänzer löst den Kreis auf, indem er die Tänzer in einer Spiralform in der Mitte zusammenführt. Anschließend führt der letzte Tänzer die Tanzschlange in die Kreisformation zurück. Einige Frauen tanzen am Rande des Dorfplatzes in Reihenformation.
    Kurzfassung: Excerpt from a visiting feast, which lasted several days, in Munggona (see Film E 2803). In the night before the guests arrive, men dance in a circular formation and sing in accompaniment. The leading dancer breaks up the circle by bringing the dancers together in the centre in a spiral shape. Subsequently, the last dancer guides the dance line back into the circular formation. Several women dance at the margin of the village plaza in a row formation.

    Kurzfassung: Preparation and celebration of a feast lasting several days, to which guests from the Heime Valley (trading and marriage partners of the Eipo) are invited: Fetching of the bag, gathering of garden fruits and fire wood, shooting of pigs, preparation and charging of earth ovens, dancing and singing (see also film E 2799), arrival and opening dances of the festively decorated guests (exhibitionism), sharing of the feast.

    Kurzfassung: Einige Bewohner von Malingdam werden beim Haareschneiden beobachtet: Kleine Haarbüschel werden mit den Fingern gefaßt und mit einem scharfkantigen Bambusspan in der Nähe der Kopfhaut abgeschnitten bzw. mit freihändig geführter Rasierklinge in durchgehende Streifen geschnitten. Die Haartracht ist einheitlich: Außer einer kreisförmigen Fläche auf der Schädeldecke wird das Haupthaar abgeschnitten.
    Kurzfassung: A few inhabitants of Malingdam are observed while they cut hair. Small bushels of hair are grasped with the fingers and cut close to the scalp with a sharp-edged bamboo chip. The hairstyle is uniform: Except for a circular area on the top of the head, all the hair is cut off.

    Kurzfassung: Vor dem Männerhaus in Malingdam spielen Jungen verschiedenen Alters. Bei dem ersten Spiel bauen sie aus ihren Händen einen Turm, den sie dann zusammenstürzen lassen. Bei dem zweiten Spiel formen sie aus Daumen und Zeigefinger Ringe, die übereinandergelegt eine Röhre ergeben. In diese schlägt ein Mitspieler mit der flachen Hand einen Stein, der ein Tier symbolisiert. Ein anderer Mitspieler muß erraten, in wessen Hand sich der Stein befindet.
    Kurzfassung: Boys of different ages are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam. In the first game they make a tower with their hands, which they then allow to collapse. In the second game they form rings from their thumbs and index fingers, which form a tube when they are placed one upon the other. In this game one player strikes a stone with the flat of his hand, which symbolises an animal. Another player has to guess in whose hand the stone is located.
