    Abstract: This open access textbook introduces and defines digital humanism from a diverse range of disciplines. Following the 2019 Vienna Manifesto, the book calls for a digital humanism that describes, analyzes, and, most importantly, influences the complex interplay of technology and humankind, for a better society and life, fully respecting universal human rights. The book is organized in three parts: Part I “Background” provides the multidisciplinary background needed to understand digital humanism in its philosophical, cultural, technological, historical, social, and economic dimensions. The goal is to present the necessary knowledge upon which an effective interdisciplinary discourse on digital humanism can be founded. Part II “Digital Humanism – a System’s View” focuses on an in-depth presentation and discussion of the main digital humanism concerns arising in current digital systems. The goal of this part is to make readers aware and sensitive to these issues, including e.g. the control and autonomy of AI systems, privacy and security, and the role of governance. Part III “Critical and Societal Issues of Digital Systems” delves into critical societal issues raised by advances of digital technologies. While the public debate in the past has often focused on them separately, especially when they became visible through sensational events the aim here is to shed light on the entire landscape and show their interconnected relationships. This includes issues such as AI and ethics, fairness and bias, privacy and surveillance, platform power and democracy. This textbook is intended for students, teachers, and policy makers interested in digital humanism. It is designed for stand-alone and for complementary courses in computer science, or curricula in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences. Each chapter includes questions for students and an annotated reading list to dive deeper into the associated chapter material. The book aims to provide readers with as wide an exposure as possible to digital advances and their consequences for humanity. It includes constructive ideas and approaches that seek to ensure that our collective digital future is determined through human agency

    Abstract: Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important topic in the cultural sector. While museums have long focused on building digital object databases, the existing data can now become a field of application for machine learning, deep learning and foundation model approaches. This goes hand in hand with new artistic practices, curation tools, visitor analytics, chatbots, automatic translations and tailor-made text generation. With a decidedly interdisciplinary approach, the volume brings together a wide range of critical reflections, practical perspectives and concrete applications of artificial intelligence in museums and offers an overview of the current state of the debate.

    Abstract: The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline. Planning is here much more than the addition of individual histories; however, historiography has treated this history very selective regarding geography and content. This book searches for an understanding of the historiography of planning in a European dimension. Scholars from Eastern and Western, Southern and Northern Europe address the issues of the public led production of city and the social functions of urban planning in capitalist and state-socialist countries. The examined examples include Poland and USSR, Czech Republic and Slovakia, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain, Italy, and Sweden.     Abstract: Everyday life as we knew it is increasingly challenged in a world of climate, social, health and political crisis. Emerging technologies, data analytics and automation open up new possibilities which have implications for energy generation, storage and energy demand. To support these changes we urgently need to rethink how energy will be sourced, shared and used. Yet existing approaches to this problem, driven by engineering, data analytics and capital, are dangerously conservative and entrenched. Energy Futures critically evaluates this context, and the energy infrastructures, stakeholders, and politics that participate in it, to propose plausible, responsible and ethical modes of encountering possible energy futures. Imagining anthropocene challenges, emerging technologies and everyday life otherwise through empirically grounded studies, opens up possible energy futures. Energy Futures proposes and demonstrates a new critical and interventional futures-oriented energy anthropology. Combining the theories and methods of futures anthropology with the critical expertise and perspectives of energy anthropology creates a powerful mode of engagement, which this book argues is needed to disrupt the dominant narratives about our energy futures. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through innovative ethnographic practice how new knowledge about imagined and possible energy futures can be mobilised in engagements with emerging technologies, anthropocene challenges and everyday realities. In doing so it brings together authors, analytical expertise and ethnographic evidence from the global south, north and places in between, generated through innovative methodologies including remote video and comic strip methods and documentary video practice as well as long term fieldwork

    Abstract: Das Lehrbuch bietet eine systematische, sozialwissenschaftliche Einführung in die Soziale Robotik. Dieser Teilbereich der Erforschung künstlicher Intelligenz zielt darauf ab, menschenähnliche Roboter zu entwickeln, die in soziale Beziehungen mit Menschen treten sollen. In drei Teilen werden die wichtigsten Aspekte der Sozialen Robotik beleuchtet. Der erste Teil fokussiert die Geschichte der KI-Forschung, beleuchtet den ,Traum' vom künstlichen Menschen und zeichnet schließlich nach, wie die Soziologie seit den 1980er Jahren das Thema beobachtet. Im zweiten Teil werden eine techniksoziologische Perspektiven eröffnet, die sich mit der Herstellung sozialer Roboter in den Laboren der Technikwissenschaften sowie den gesellschaftlichen Folgen der Entwicklung und Etablierung sozialer Roboter befassen. Im Zentrum des dritten Teils schließlich stehen sozialtheoretische Perspektiven, die der Frage der Sozialität sozialer Roboter nachgehen und anhand exemplarischer Fallstudien zeigen, wie diese Frage beantwortet werden kann. Hoch aktuelles Thema, das etablierte Vorstellungen von Sozialität herausfordert Erste sozialwissenschaftliche Einführung zum Thema Systematischer Überblick über techniksoziologische und sozialtheoretische Perspektiven auf die soziale Robotik Zugänglichkeit und Nachvollziehbarkeit durch viele Fallbeispiele

Computing has become an essential part of today's primary and secondary school curricula. In recent years, K-12 computer education has shifted from computer science itself to the broader perspective of computational thinking (CT), which is less about technology than a way of thinking and solving problems-"a fundamental skill for everyone, not just computer scientists," in the words of Jeanette Wing, author of a foundational article on CT.     Abstract: This edited book explores the unique risks, opportunities, challenges, and societal implications associated with big data developments within the field of finance. While the general use of big data has been the subject of frequent discussions, this book will take a more focused look at big data applications in the financial sector. With contributions from researchers, practitioners, and entrepreneurs involved at the forefront of big data in finance, the book discusses technological and business-inspired breakthroughs in the field. The contributions offer technical insights into the different applications presented and highlight how these new developments may impact and contribute to the evolution of the financial sector. Additionally, the book presents several case studies that examine practical applications of big data in finance. In exploring the readiness of financial institutions to adapt to new developments in the big data/artificial intelligence space and assessing different implementation strategies and policy solutions, the book will be of interest to academics, practitioners, and regulators who work in this field. Thomas Walker is a Full Professor of Finance and the Concordia University Research Chair in Emerging Risk Management at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. Prior to academia, he worked for several years in the German consulting and industrial sector at Mercedes Benz, Utility Consultants International, Lahmeyer International, Telenet, and KPMG Peat Marwick. Frederick Davis is an Associate Professor at the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. Prior to his academic career, he worked for several years in the government sector assisting communities with their economic development. His research interests include mergers and acquisitions, insider trading, big data, and other aspects of corporate finance. Tyler Schwartz holds an MSc degree in Data Science and Business Analytics from HEC Montreal. He has served as a research assistant in the Department of Finance at Concordia University for over four years and is the co-author of an edited book collection on climate change adaptation as well as working papers on social impact bonds and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dies umfasst sowohl Grundbegriffe, die Vielfalt technisierter Menschenbilder, technisierte Praktiken sowie die Technisierung von Sinnen und Kompetenzen. Vorgestellt werden zudem wichtige Vertreter einer Technikanthropologie seit der Frühen Neuzeit. Mit einer interdisziplinären Herangehensweise arbeitet das Handbuch verschiedene Problematisierungen von Menschen und Maschinen, die gerade heute virulent sind, historisch und systematisch auf. Dabei steht die klassische anthropologische Frage nach dem "Menschen" in den jeweiligen Ausprägungen und Wandlungen mit Blick auf Technik im Zentrum. Diese Betrachtung geht nicht von einem einzigartigen, unveränderlichen Wesen des Menschen aus, sondern untersucht die historischen Veränderungen des Menschen durch und mit Technik. Gerade im Zeichen neuer Technologien wie der Digitalisierung und Künstlicher Intelligenz-Forschung steht das Mensch-Maschinen-Verhältnis erneut auf der Agenda.     Abstract: This handbook provides an overview of approaches to, and methods and topics on a historical anthropology of technology. This includes basic concepts, the variety of human technical concepts, technicised practices and the technicisation of senses and skills. Furthermore, it presents important representatives of an anthropology of technology since the early modern period. With its interdisciplinary approach, this volume historically and systematically approaches various problems relating to humans and machines that are currently being debated. At the centre of attention is the quintessential anthropological question of what a ‘human being’ is with respect to technology. However, this consideration does not derive from the concept of a unique, unchanging essence of man, but examines the historical changes of man through and with technology. Particularly in light of new technologies such as digitisation and artificial intelligence research, the relationship between humans and machines is once again on the agenda, in which humans and humanity seem to be the subject of discussion

    Abstract: Biographical note: Achim Brunnengräber (PD Dr. phil. habil.), geb. 1963, ist Privatdozent an der Freien Universität Berlin im Fachbereich Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften. Er beschäftigt sich am Forschungszentrum für Umweltpolitik mit der politischen Ökonomie der Elektro-Mobilität. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind darüber hinaus die Umwelt-, Energie- und Klimapolitik sowie die Endlager-Governance für hoch radioaktive Reststoffe. Tobias Haas (Dr. rer. soc.), geb. 1983, ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Forschungszentrum für Umweltpolitik an der Freien Universität Berlin und am »Institute For Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V.« in Potsdam. 2018 war er Stipendiat am DFG-Kolleg »Postwachstumsgesellschaften« an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena.     Abstract: Die Texte des Bandes befassen sich schwerpunktmäßig mit den Erfahrungen der Quartiersentwicklung im Globalen Süden und der Frage, wie es gelingen kann, selbst in Situationen geringster Ressourcenverfügbarkeit und größter Not menschenwürdige Lebensbedingungen auf der Quartiersebene zu verwirklichen. Von diesen Beispielen können wir für unsere eigenen Herausforderungen auf unterschiedlichste Weise profitieren: zum einen in methodischer Hinsicht, stellen sie doch höchste Anforderungen an die Mobilisierung von Selbsthilfekräften und die Beteiligung von Bewohnerinnen und Bewohnern, wenn sie überhaupt ernsthaft an einer schrittweisen Aufwertung interessiert sind; zum anderen hinsichtlich des Umgangs mit den Einflüssen des globalen und lokalen Immobilienkapitals, das auf eine maximale Verwertung insbesondere von günstig gelegenen Lagen mit Quartieren geringer Dichte und immobilienwirtschaftliche Erträge abzielt und dabei nicht selten die Lebensbedingungen der ärmsten Städter fundamental in Frage stellt. Die Zielgruppen Studierende und Dozierende der Stadtentwicklung und Stadtplanung sowie Praktikerinnen und Praktiker. Die Herausgeber Dr.-Ing.     Abstract: After a long time of neglect, Artificial Intelligence is once again at the center of most of our political, economic, and socio-cultural debates. Recent advances in the field of Artifical Neural Networks have led to a renaissance of dystopian and utopian speculations on an AI-rendered future. Algorithmic technologies are deployed for identifying potential terrorists through vast surveillance networks, for producing sentencing guidelines and recidivism risk profiles in criminal justice systems, for demographic and psychographic targeting of bodies for advertising or propaganda, and more generally for automating the analysis of language, text, and images. Against this background, the aim of this book is to discuss the heterogenous conditions, implications, and effects of modern AI and Internet technologies in terms of their political dimension: What does it mean to critically investigate efforts of net politics in the age of machine learning algorithms?

    Abstract: While Russian computer scientists are notorious for their interference in the 2016 US presidential election, they are ubiquitous on Wall Street and coveted by international IT firms and often perceive themselves as the present manifestation of the past glory of Soviet scientific prowess. Drawing on over three hundred in-depth interviews, the contributors to From Russia with Code trace the practices, education, careers, networks, migrations, and lives of Russian IT professionals at home and abroad, showing how they function as key figures in the tense political and ideological environment of technological innovation in post-Soviet Russia. Among other topics, they analyze coders' creation of both transnational communities and local networks of political activists; Moscow's use of IT funding to control peripheral regions; brain drain and the experiences of coders living abroad in the United Kingdom, United States, Israel, and Finland; and the possible meanings of Russian computing systems in a heterogeneous nation and industry. Highlighting the centrality of computer scientists to post-Soviet economic mobilization in Russia, the contributors offer new insights into the difficulties through which a new entrepreneurial culture emerges in a rapidly changing world.

This collection shows how maps are created and transformed as a part of political struggle, for critical research or in art and education: from indigenous territories in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco; from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon; from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin; from supporting communities in the Philippines to reporting sexual harassment in Cairo.
