    Abstract: By the 13th century BC, the Syrian city of Ugarit hosted an extremely diverse range of writing practices. As well as two main scripts - alphabetic and logographic cuneiform - the site has also produced inscriptions in a wide range of scripts and languages, including Hurrian, Sumerian, Hittite, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Luwian hieroglyphs and Cypro-Minoan. This variety in script and language is accompanied by writing practices that blend influences from Mesopotamian, Anatolian and Levantine traditions together with what seem to be distinctive local innovations. Script and Society: The Social Context of Writing Practices in Late Bronze Age Ugarit explores the social and cultural context of these complex writing traditions from the perspective of writing as a social practice. It combines archaeology, epigraphy, history and anthropology to present a highly interdisciplinary exploration of social questions relating to writing at the site, including matters of gender, ethnicity, status and other forms of identity, the relationship between writing and place, and the complex relationships between inscribed and uninscribed objects. This forms a case- study for a wider discussion of interdisciplinary approaches to the study of writing practices in the ancient world

    Abstract: "This book explores the role of music in the transmission of political culture over time and distance, focusing on radicals and reformers committed to the struggle for a better future. It follows in the footsteps of relentlessly travelling activists - both women and men - and brings to light the importance of music-making in the lived experience of politics. It shows how music encouraged, unified, divided, consoled and reminded; and it helps to understand better the affective register of the political and cultural life of those who composed, performed and consumed it. Throughout the long nineteenth century the sounds of liberty resonated across the Anglophone world: in the faint strains of 'rough music' played on the streets of Toronto and the 'middle-brow' performances within the walls of a secularist coven in Christchurch; in cacophonous election songs swirling around the hustings in Glasgow and Sunday afternoon chamber music concerts in the heart of radical Holborn; in defiant anthems blaring slightly out of tune on picket lines in Broken Hill and in hymns warbled by labour church choirs in Winnipeg. The first section examines songs; the second examines music's place in the public sphere where people - individually and collectively - made music when marching, electioneering, celebrating and commemorating, as well as striking, rioting and rebelling. The final section explores music-making within the walls of a range of associations and institutions including the difficult and often destructive part it played in European interaction with indigenous people" --Back cover

    Abstract: Plague, a devastating and recurring affliction throughout the Renaissance, had a major impact on European life. Not only was pestilence a biological problem, but it was also read as a symptom of spiritual degeneracy and it caused widespread social disorder.     Description / Table of Contents: In the 20th century, jazz was an important artistic form. Depending on the particular European country, jazz music carried different social, political and aesthetic meanings. It brought challenges in the areas of racial issues, the politics of the Cold War between East and West, and in the exploration of boundaries of artistic freedom. In socialist Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary and Poland, the situation began to change after 1956 and then 1968, when the ideologists shifted from the aesthetics of socialist realism to postmodernism. In Western countries such as France and Italy, jazz transformed from a modern to a postmodern period. This volume deals with the impact of these changes on the career development of jazz musicians - even beyond 1989 - in terms of various phenomena such as emigration, child prodigies, multiculturalism, multi-genre approaches, or female jazz musicians

    Abstract: This interdisciplinary volume explores the girl's voice and the construction of girlhood in contemporary popular music, visiting girls as musicians, activists, and performers through topics that range from female vocal development during adolescence to girls' online media culture. While girls' voices are more prominent than ever in popular music culture, the specific sonic character of the young female voice is routinely denied authority. Decades old cliches of girls as frivolous, silly, and deserving of contempt prevail in mainstream popular image and sound. Nevertheless, girls find ways to raise their voices and make themselves heard. This volume explores the contemporary girl's voice to illuminate the way ideals of girlhood are historically specific, and the way adults frame and construct girlhood to both valorize and vilify girls and women. Interrogating popular music, childhood, and gender, it analyzes the history of the all-girl band from the Runaways to the present; the changing anatomy of a girl's voice throughout adolescence; girl's participatory culture via youtube and rock camps, and representations of the girl's voice in other media like audiobooks, film, and television. Essays consider girl performers like Jackie Evancho and Lorde, and all-girl bands like Sleater Kinney, The Slits and Warpaint, as well as performative 'girlishness' in the voices of female vocalists like Joni Mitchell, Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Kathleen Hanna, and Rebecca Black. Participating in girl studies within and beyond the field of music, this book unites scholarly perspectives from disciplines such as musicology, ethnomusicology, comparative literature, women's and gender studies, media studies, and education to investigate the importance of girls' voices in popular music, and to help unravel the complexities bound up in music and girlhood in the contemporary contexts of North America and the United Kingdom.

    Abstract: In mid-1990s South Africa, apartheid ended, Nelson Mandela was elected president, and the country s urban black youth developed "kwaito" a form of electronic music (redolent of North American house) that came to represent the post-struggle generation. In this book, Gavin Steingo examines kwaito as it has developed alongside the democratization of South Africa over the past two decades. Tracking the fall of South African hope into the disenchantment that often characterizes the outlook of its youth today who face high unemployment, extreme inequality, and widespread crime Steingo looks to kwaito as a powerful tool that paradoxically engages South Africa s crucial social and political problems by, in fact, seeming to ignore them. Politicians and cultural critics have long criticized kwaito for failing to provide any meaningful contribution to a society that desperately needs direction. As Steingo shows, however, these criticisms are built on problematic assumptions about the political function of music. Interacting with kwaito artists and fans, he shows that youth aren t escaping their social condition through kwaito but rather using it to expand their sensory realities and generate new possibilities. Resisting the truism that music is always political, Steingo elucidates a music that thrives on its its radically ambiguous relationship with politics, power, and the state. - Gavin Steingo is assistant professor of music at the University of Pittsburgh.

    Abstract: Development is based on communication through language. With more than two thousand languages being used in Africa, language becomes a highly relevant factor in all sectors of political, social, cultural and economic life. This important sociolinguistic dimension hitherto remains underrated and under-researched in 'Western' mainstream development studies. The book discusses the resourcefulness of languages, both local and global, in view of the ongoing transformation of African societies as much as for economic development. From a novel 'applied African sociolinguistics' perspective it analyses the continuing effects of linguistic imperialism on postcolonial African societies, in particular regarding the educational sector, through imposed hegemonic languages such as Arabic and the ex-colonial languages of European provenance. It offers a broad interdisciplinary scientific approach to the linguistic dimensions of sociocultural modernisation and economic development in Africa, written for both the non-linguistically trained reader as much as for the linguistically trained researcher and language practitioner

    Abstract: Das Thema Religion ist neuerdings im Mainstream israelischer Musik angekommen, obwohl es zuvor belächelt wurde. Felix Papenhagen analysiert grundsätzlich das Verhältnis von jüdischer Religiosität und israelischer Popularmusik.Er versteht die Popularmusik als Seismograph für gesellschaftliche Veränderungen und geht davon aus, dass sich die jüngere Geschichte Israels auch vorwiegend in dessen Musikkultur widerspiegelt. Um dies zu zeigen, führte und analysierte Papenhagen Interviews mit bekannten israelischen Popmusikern sowie deren Liedtexte mit dem Ziel, Erkenntnisse über ihr Verständnis von religiösen Motiven zu gewinnen. Dabei lässt er den Einfluss und die Bedeutung von Musik und Religion für die Musiker selbst in seiner Analyse nicht außer Acht und geht explizit auf die Ambivalenz von säkularem und religiösem Selbstverständnis unterschiedlicher Musikerpersonen ein, welches die Biografie jedes einzelnen mitgeprägt hat.

    Abstract: This book explores the role of music in negotiating difference. It brings to light processes of differentiation and social stereotypes and hierarchies at at work in the evolving French Louisiana musical field. It also draws attention to the interactions between binary oppositions such as black and white, urban and rural, differentiation and creolization, traditional and modern, and local, national and global. The book argues for the importance of desegregating the understanding of French Louisiana music by situating it beyond ethnic or racial identifications, bringing to light the importance of regional identification. The musical genealogy and categories in use are legitimized through an omnipresent racial imaginary that frames African and European lineage as a foundational difference. Instead of seeing the discourses of origins and mixing as contradictory, the field and the way music is practiced show that they continually interact. French Louisiana musicians navigate between multiple identifications, music styles and legacies while market forces, outsider’s interest and geographical mobility also contribute to shape their career strategies and musical choices. This work also demonstrates the decisive role of non-natives' interest and mobility in the validation, evolution, and reconfiguration of French Louisiana music. Finally, the distinctiveness of South Louisiana with respect to the rest of the country appears both nurtured and endured, revealing the intricacies of political domination and regionalism

    Abstract: From the sports trend of parkour, via the Old Testament, up to the Berlin squatting scene - the different contributions to this volume take up the challenge of rethinking questions about the entanglement of space and gender. Predominant interpretations of current societal phenomena as well as established research topics are examined in order to trace gendered power structures. Thus, resistant moves/tricks (Maschen) and powerful games/acts (Muster) are found in a wide range of topics reaching from observations of performative acts and discourse structures all the way to medial treatments.     Abstract: Rap, techno, électro, house, jungle, trip hop... ces styles musicaux se sont installés dans le paysage discographique français depuis la fin des années 1990. À travers les succès commerciaux retentissants ou les coups d'éclat de leurs animateurs, ils sont apparus comme des fenêtres ouvertes sur les plaisirs, les désirs et les maux de la jeunesse. « Jeunes », les musiques rap et électroniques le sont en effet à double titre : filles d'esthétiques postmodernes et de bricolages technologiques dernier cri, elles sont aussi sociologiquement attachées à l'adolescence et à l'entrée dans la vie adulte. En montrant ces « nouveaux »musiciens au travail, l'auteur entraîne le lecteur loin des clichés réducteurs associant ces cultures musicales à une « perte de repères » ou à une mauvaise humeur à la mode. L'articulation entre création artistique et critique sociale, l'invention et la diffusion de modèles d'organisation alternatifs en matière de production discographique sont mises au jour. Dans cet univers professionnel très actuel, la banalisation des « home-studios » et l'extension des responsabilités de l'artiste permettent en effet aux individus de faire carrière en multipliant les projets (de disques et de labels) et les casquettes (de musicien et de manager). Peinture vivante des relations de travail et au travail dans un milieu artistique fondé sur la mobilité, cet ouvrage permet enfin de comprendre les évolutions récentes du monde du disque vers une réactivité et une souplesse toujours plus grandes.
