Abstract: "Welcome to The International Encyclopedia of Linguistic Anthropology, or as those of us in the know like to call it, the IELA. While this project did not rival the 22 years Daniel Webster spent on his famous An American Dictionary of the English Language, or the 70 years it took to complete the Oxford English Dictionary, this undertaking did not happen overnight. The four volumes you see before you represent the hard work of eight editors, a dozen of staff members at various times at Wiley Blackwell, and hundreds of contributing scholars. Though we are ahead of the game by comparison to the OED, the four years we spent working on the IELA were quite eventful for all of us, individually (with everything happening from personal problems and health issues, to new professional responsibilities seeming to occur just as some kind of deadline had to be met)."--
