Abstract: "This book brings fresh perspectives to the anthropology of migration. It focuses on what migrants write and how anthropologists may incorporate insights gained from engagement with this writing into research methods and writing practices. The volume includes a range of contributions from leading scholars in the field, all organized around a striking set of questions about the conditions in which migrant narratives are written and translated, the audiences for which they are intended, the genres and media through which they are disseminated, and what such stories include or leave out. The contributors to this volume demonstrate an innovative shift in anthropological methods by showing how fiction and nonfiction, graphic memoir and autoethnography, song lyrics as well as social media posts and images, unsettle the power dynamics in the study of migration narrative. This book will serve as important supplemental reading for courses on migration, literary anthropology, ethnographic methods, and sociocultural anthropology in general. It's interdisciplinary perspective will appeal to a broad range of scholars and students with interests in migration, narrative, and anthropological writing genres"--...

Abstract: The story of how a biologically driven understanding of gender and sexuality became central to US LGBTQ+ political and legal advocacy. Across protests and courtrooms, LGBTQ+ advocates argue that sexual and gender identities are innate. Oppositely, conservatives incite panic over 'groomers' and a contagious 'gender ideology' that corrupts susceptible children. Yet, as this debate rages on, the history of what first compelled the hunt for homosexuality's biological origin story may hold answers for the queer rights movement's future. 'Born This Way' tells the story of how a biologically based understanding of gender and sexuality became central to LGBTQ+ advocacy.

Abstract: From the tenth to the twelfth centuries in England and Scotland we have scant evidence of women's writing. How, then, can we access these women's experiences? This book argues that by analysing texts deliberately written forand addressed directly to women we gain an insight into the horizons of possibility for their lives. It examines religious texts addressed to women, bringing together works that are more widely studied with others that are less well known, and demonstrates continuities across Old English and Latin texts written for female readers and patrons across the Conquest period

Abstract: Revolutionary Feminists tells the story of the radical women's liberation movement in Seattle in the 1960s and 1970s from the perspective of a founding member, Barbara Winslow. Drawing on her collection of letters, pamphlets, and photographs as well as newspaper accounts, autobiographies, and interviews, Winslow emphasizes the vital role that Black women played in the women's liberation movement to create meaningful intersectional coalitions in an overwhelmingly White city. Winslow brings the voices and visions of those she calls the movement's "ecstatic utopians" to life. She charts their short-term successes and lasting achievements, from organizing women at work and campaigning for subsidized childcare to creating women-centered rape crisis centers, health clinics, and self-defense programs. The Seattle movement was essential to winning the first popular vote in the United States to liberalize abortion laws. Despite these achievements, Winslow critiques the failure of the movement's White members to listen to Black, Latina, Indigenous, and Asian American and Pacific Islander feminist activists. Reflecting on the Seattle movement's accomplishments and shortcomings, Winslow offers a model for contemporary feminist activism.

Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Daniel Defoe is the most comprehensive overview available of the author’s life, times, writings, and reception. Daniel Defoe (1660–1731) is a major author in world literature, renowned for a succession of novels including Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders, and A Journal of the Plague Year, but more famous in his lifetime as a poet, journalist, and political agent. Across his vast oeuvre, which includes books, pamphlets, and periodicals, Defoe commented on virtually every development and issue of his lifetime, a turbulent and transformative period in British and global history. Defoe has proven challenging to position—in some respects he is a traditional and conservative thinker, but in other ways he is a progressive and innovative writer. He therefore benefits from the range of critical appraisals offered in this Handbook. The volume ranges from concerns of gender, class, and race to those of politics, religion, and economics. In accessible but learned chapters, expert contributors explore salient contexts in ways that show how they overlap and intersect, such as in chapters on science, environment, and empire. The Handbook provides both a thorough introduction to Defoe and to early eighteenth-century society, culture, and literature more broadly. Thirty-six chapters by leading literary scholars and historians explore the various genres in which Defoe wrote; the sociocultural contexts that inform his works; his writings on different locales, from the local to the global; and the posthumous reception and creative responses to his works.

Abstract: "The second edition of Digital Literacy provides a highly focused exploration of key critical concepts in understanding digital media in a clear, engaging and accessible way for an introductory audience. Core to the books approach is its comparison of digital literacy perspectives across different cultures, highlighting the significant disparity in digital privacy and regulation of technology companies across countries, to expand on the discourse surrounding modern digital engagement. Prescient issues are examined in depth, such as decline of traditional media, rise of Big Tech, and erosion of privacy and democratic ideals. Important themes explored in chapters across the book include digital Identity, the internet as infrastructure, the web as a collaborative tool, and domestic and global digital divides. The new edition also explores digital literacy and the pandemic, as well as the growing body of research around the effects and impact of the digital technologies we use every day. There are also useful Applied Skills Appendices outlining core areas of digital practice. The text is an ideal resource for students and scholars of mass communication, media literacy, digital information literacy, and digital technology courses, as well as for all those wanting to know more about the deep on-going impact of communication technologies on our lives"--

Abstract: Inclusion of people with disabilities has become one of the priorities of the social policy in the European Union and in the Russian Federation, in part, in connection with the increasing ratification of the UN CRPD worldwide and problems induced by the “ageing” society. However, people with hearing loss and their specific needs are often overlooked in comparison with more visible disabilities. The main purpose of this study is to look into and compare the mechanisms and results of social inclusion of hard of hearing people (HoH) in Russia and Germany and to contribute with empirically grounded findings to the research on hard of hearing people of which there is a lack in the disability research field. An analysis of the social and disability related policies in both countries and a comparison of the legal and institutional arrangements and opportunities provides the framework for the empirical analysis (questionnaire, interviews with HoH persons, NGOs and with experts). The appraisal of the policies and infrastructures is following the conceptual and normative benchmarks of the Disability studies. The comparative analysis is focused on access of HoH people to education and employment, to rehabilitation, information and communication – the fields critical to inclusion and participation. The empirical research comprises an explorative non-representative questionnaire survey with a) 190 young respondents aged 18-35 years (136 from Germany, 150 from Russia) b) 110 elderly respondents (65 or 60 years old and older; 43 from Germany, 67 from Russia), and expert interviews with the key persons in the field (researchers, political decision-makers, medical and educational professionals, hard of hearing NGO activists); furthermore, guided interviews with HoH people (N=11 in Germany, N=16 in Russia) were conducted. Commonalities and discrepancies in the national policy directions are discussed, examples of positive practices in medical, educational and professional rehabilitation and potential policy measures are suggested.

Abstract: To manage recreational fisheries effectively, researchers and managers must understand angler behaviour across multiple sources of diversity. Anglers themselves are a heterogeneous group, and they interact with a diversity of fishing opportunities across a diversity of social-ecological contexts. The objective of my dissertation was to study angler satisfaction, a key consideration in the management of recreational fisheries, and angler behaviour across these sources of diversity. First, I performed a meta-analysis of angler satisfaction to study the catch and non-catch related determinants of recreational angler satisfaction. The aggregated effect sizes revealed that catch-related (i.e., catch rate, size of largest fish caught, fish harvested) components were more strongly related to angling satisfaction than non-catch related components (e.g., environmental quality). Following the meta-analysis, I used existing angler diary data from contrasting social-ecological contexts in Germany to explore how catch satisfaction and catch & release behaviour varied, and how they may be moderated by situational and social-ecological characteristics. This research revealed that the importance of catch outcomes towards catch satisfaction varied across angler types (i.e., angler specialization), situational, and social-ecological contexts. Similarly, I found that harvest behaviours also varied significantly across these sources of diversity. Altogether, my doctoral research supports the assertion that recreational fisheries researchers need to account for diversity across angler types, situational contexts, and social-ecological contexts. Work that fails to account for these sources of diversity will have the potential to mislead fisheries managers or reduce faith in human dimensions research within recreational fisheries.

Abstract: First full-length exploration of the Arthurian legend in Scotland. Scotland's importance in Arthurian legend is undeniable: it was the traditional homeland of key figures such as Gawain; its landscape is still dotted with Arthurian associations, and many modern attempts to locate a historical Arthur end up in Scotland. Nevertheless, Scotland's complex relationship with Arthurian legend has been surprisingly neglected, and this volume is the first to be dedicated to it. The essays cover the period between the appearance inca. 1136 of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae and the accession of James VI to the English throne as James I in 1603 - five centuries of precarious Scottish independence during which the relationship of theScots and the English, as refracted through Arthurian legend, is at its most turbulent and changeable. The approaches are both literary and historical, covering such topics as the direct responses of early Scottish historians to the challenges set by Geoffrey's work, Arthurian literature written in Scots, the circulation of other Arthurian material in Scotland, and the portrayal of Scotland and the Scots in English and French Arthurian texts

Abstract: "Living in a post-truth world during an era of information wars, making sense of events is increasingly challenging for everyone. The fact that today's politics has found many retreating to ideologically "safe" spaces online where their world view is not contested makes the need for news and information literacy more significant. A contemporary world where disinformation and propaganda lead to a distrust of news sources calls for a new way to approach information and news literacy. Digital technology has seemingly made information and news easier to access, but it has also made sorting quality from nonsense a challenge. This book presents a different approach to news and information literacy which uses a flipped classroom method to create a student-centered learning experience. The course is guided by the educational philosophy of Paulo Freire and draws on theory and research from psychology, education and news and information literacy. the course begins with an exercise which reveals the role confirmation bias plays in how they judge the adequacy of news and information they retrieve through online search. The course engenders greater confidence in mastering the pitfalls of the Internet as students emerge from the empowered with self-knowledge and as well as a better understanding of the Internet. The book is relevant for news, information and media literacy teachers at levels of education, especially secondary and collegiate levels; curriculum specialists, continuing and adult education specialists and anyone who wants to better understand how we process news and information in the digital age"--

Abstract: «This sophisticated and empathetic study explores a suite of important Australian literary works from the Chinese diaspora. Using memory studies to trace connections and contiguities, Dr Chen maps an emotionally charged literary network that is compelled by the past to confront the future. The result is a richly revealing exploration of transnational literary identity and complex forms of belonging and attachment across time and place.»(Professor Nicole Moore, UNSW Canberra)«If memory is the broken mirror of history, diasporic memories are intricate mosaics of multitudinous pasts: personal, collective, national, cosmopolitan, cultural and political. Reading Chinese Australian literature as a mimesis of memory, Beibei Chen offers invaluable insights into the entanglement of past and present and its effect on diasporic identity.»(Professor Wenche Ommundsen, University of Wollongong)Inspired by the «transnational turn» in global literature, this book explores the significance of transnational memory and identity in Chinese-Australian literature by closely examining representations of these two concepts in selected texts. By attending to diverse forms of memory such as collective memory, individual memory, cosmopolitan memory and transgenerational memory, this book offers unique observations on how different types of memory exert influence on the formation of identity in Chinese diasporic writings and tackles the complexity of reading literary texts in light of theories of memory, sociological studies and psychological analysis.

Abstract: "Orelus' valuable study draws on the scholarly work of sociocultural and postcolonial theorists, as well as testimonies collected from study participants, to explore accentism, the systemic form of discrimination against speakers whose accents deviate from a socially constructed norm. Orelus examines the manner in which accents are acquired and the effects of such acquisition on the learning and educational experiences of linguistically and culturally diverse students. He goes on to demonstrate the ways and the degree to which factors such as race, class, and country of origin are connected with nonstandard accent-based discrimination. Finally, this book proposes alternative ways to challenge and counter the accentism that minority groups, including linguistically and culturally diverse groups, have faced in schools and in society at large. It will be of interest to all of those concerned with linguistic/accent-based prejudice and the experience of those who face it"--

Abstract: "This book explores crosslinguistic influence in third language acquisition, drawing insights form a study of young bilingual secondary school students in Germany to unpack the importance of different variables in the acquisition and use of English as an additional language. Lorenz draws on data from a learner corpus of written and spoken picture descriptions toward analyzing sources of crosslinguistic influence in L3 acquisition in bilingual heritage speakers with unbalanced proficiency in heritage versus majority languages as compared with their monolingual German peers. This unique approach allows for a clearer understanding of the extent of influence of access to heritage languages, the impact of being a "balanced" vs "unbalanced" bilingual speaker, and the importance of extra-linguistic variables, such as age, gender, socio-economic status, and type of school. The final two chapters highlight practical considerations for the English language classroom and the implications of the study for future directions for research on third language acquisition. With its detailed overview of L2 and L3 acquisition and contribution toward ongoing debates on the advantages of being bilingual and multilingual, this book will be of interest to students and scholars in applied linguistics, foreign language acquisition, foreign language teaching, and learner corpus research." Abstract: Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) made a pioneering and durably influential argument for women's equality. Emerging from the turbulent decade of the French Revolution, her vindication delivered a systematic critique of the treatment of women across time and place. Drawing on extensive experience teaching and writing about Wollstonecraft, Susan J. Wolfson offers new insight into how Wollstonecraft's particular methods, style, and energy make this case for her readers.Wolfson places this polemic in its political and literary contexts and in relation to Wollstonecraft's other works about political rights. She considers how Wollstonecraft balanced advocacy for the seemingly universal ideals of the French Revolution with analysis of the gendered exclusions in the vaunted rights of "man." This book pays particular attention to Wollstonecraft's literary craft, highlighting the force of her close reading. Wollstonecraft pinpointed the role of gendered phrases and concepts in political discourse, both in her opponents' metaphors and received ideas and in her own efforts to craft a new political language with which to defend women's capabilities. Wolfson reveals her as a pioneer in decoupling sex from gender and shows how she provided an enduring model of how to be a female intellectual. Sharing the excitement of reading Wollstonecraft's work with care for her literary as well as political genius, this book provides fresh perspectives both for first-time readers and those seeking a nuanced appreciation of her achievements

Abstract: The nineteenth-century Romantic myth of Bohemia emerged to describe the new conditions faced by artists and writers, who after the previous system of aristocratic patronage collapsed were free to move around in search of success. Yet most real-life bohemians have scant interest in commercial gain and are not so itinerant after all. Tracing these contradictions in bohemian cultures and lifestyles from the early nineteenth century to the present, David Weir explores the myth of Bohemia as it developed in various forms of expression-novels, plays, operas, films-and in key cities, including Paris, Munich, and New York. Weir concludes with a discussion of the legacy of Bohemia today as something outworn and dying, an exhausted tradition that somehow continues

Abstract: A compelling explanation of the American public's acceptance of LGBT freedoms through the lens of pop cultureHow did gay people go from being characterized as dangerous perverts to military heroes and respectable parents? How did the interests of the LGBT movement and the state converge to transform mainstream political and legal norms in these areas?Using civil rights narratives, pop culture, and critical theory, LGBT Inclusion in American Life tells the story of how exclusion was transformed into inclusion in US politics and society, as pop culture changed mainstream Americans thinking about "non-gay" issues, namely privacy, sex and gender norms, and family. Susan Burgess explores films such as Casablanca, various James Bond movies, and Julie and Julia, and television shows such as thirtysomething and The Americans, as well as the Broadway sensation Hamilton, as sources of growing popular support for LGBT rights. By drawing on popular culture as a rich source of public understanding, Burgess explains how the greater public came to accept and even support the three central pillars of LGBT freedoms in the post-World War II era: to have consensual adult sex without fear of criminal penalty, to serve openly in the military, and to marry legally. LGBT Inclusion in American Life argues that pop culture can help us to imagine unknown futures that lead beyond what we currently desire from contemporary politics, and in return asks now that the mainstream public has come to accept LGBT freedoms, where might the popular imagination be headed in the future?

Abstract: "The unprecedented rate of global, technological, and societal change calls for a radical, new understanding of literacy. This book offers a nuanced framework for making sense of literacy by addressing knowledge as contextualized, embodied, multimodal, and digitally mediated. In today's world of technological breakthroughs, social shifts, and rapid changes to the educational landscape, literacy can no longer be understood through established curriculum and static text structures. To prepare teachers, scholars, and researchers for the digital future, the book is organised around three themes-Mind and Materiality; Body and Senses; and Texts and Digital Semiotics-to shape readers' understanding of literacy. Opening up new interdisciplinary themes, Mills, Unsworth, and Scholes confront emerging issues for next-generation digital literacy practices. The volume helps new and established researchers rethink dynamic changes in the materiality of texts and their implications for the mind and body, and features recommendations for educational and professional practice"--

This comprehensive overview of the field explores representations of possible futures arising from non-Western cultures and ethnic histories that disrupt the "imperial gaze." In four parts, The Routledge Handbook of CoFuturisms considers the look of futures from the margins, foregrounding the issues of Indigenous groups, racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities, and any people whose stakes in the global order of envisioning futures are generally constrained due to the mechanics of our contemporary world. The book extends current discussions in the area, looking at cutting-edge developments in the discipline of science fiction and diverse futurisms as a whole. Offering a dynamic mix of approaches and expansive perspectives, this volume will appeal to academics and researchers seeking to orient their own interventions into broader contexts"--

Abstract: This open access book examines how the form of the list features as a tool for meaning-making in the genre of detective fiction from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. The book analyzes how both readers and detectives rely on listing as an ordering and structuring tool, and highlights the crucial role that lists assume in the reading process. It extends the boundaries of an emerging field dedicated to the study of lists in literature and caters to a newly revived interest in form and New Formalist approaches in narratological research. The central aim of this book is to show how detective fiction makes use of lists in order to frame various conceptions of knowledge. The frames created by these lists are crucial to decoding the texts, and they can be used to demonstrate how readers can be engaged in the act of detection or manipulated into accepting certain propositions in the text. Abstract: “An important, rigorous and very readable book which will be an essential point of reference for future studies of sexual violence in the news. Tranchese demonstrates which myths about rape have persisted, as well as highlighting how they have adapted to the digital news environment. Her analysis is clear and persuasive and provides activists with new tools and evidence to push for change. This is feminist media studies at its best. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.” —Karen Boyle, Author #MeToo, Weinstein and Feminism, University of Strathclyde “This book is essential reading for anyone who really wants to understand how the myths and stereotypes around rape are moulded and sustained by the British media, distracting from the profound structural changes required to dismantle misogyny and deliver real justice for women, too often denied by the courts.” —Yvonne Roberts, journalist and campaigner This is the first longitudinal study of the language used by the British press to talk about rape. Through a diachronic analysis informed by corpus linguistics and feminist theory, Tranchese examines how rape discourse has (or has not) changed over the past decade. With its detailed investigation of media representations, the book explores how age-old myths about sexual violence re-emerge in different forms within news narratives. Against the backdrop of twelve years of newspaper coverage of rape, including many high-profile cases, this study also traces the rise of “celebrity culture”, the emergence of #metoo, and the development of the backlash against it. The author places these historical events and recent trends within broader debates on feminism and the role played by (social) media in shaping contemporary rape discourse. This book provides a much-needed linguistic analysis which will be of particular interest to scholars and students of feminist studies, language and gender, corpus-assisted discourse studies, and gendered crime. Alessia Tranchese is Senior Lecturer in Communication and Applied Linguistics at the University of Portsmouth, UK. Her research interests include the representation of violence against women in the media, online misogyny, and corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis. .

Abstract: This monograph provides the first sustained, chronological account of Northern Irish police officers’ representation in theatre. Importantly, its scope comprises a critical period of national and organisational development, beginning with the Partition of Ireland in 1921 and the founding of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) one year later in 1922. It progresses through the relevant theatrical and historical events of the century, through the period after the RUC’s dissolution and replacement with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in 2001, and concludes in 2021 to coincide with the centenary of Partition. As such, this project is distinctive in its ability to trace paradigm shifts in perceptions of the police over time, as they intersect with relevant historical events and milestones of political conflict in the province. T. W. Saunders received his PhD from the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2018. He then travelled extensively—to locations including Cyprus, Spain, Chile, Canada, Gibraltar, and the Falkland Islands—while adapting his dissertation into a scholarly monograph and working on various other adjacent projects. He lives in Colorado.

Abstract: Inclusive Shakespeares: Identity, Pedagogy, Performance responds to the growing concern to make Shakespeare Studies inclusive of prospective students, teachers, performers, and audiences who have occupied a historically marginalized position in relation to Shakespeare's poetry and plays. This timely collection includes essays by leading and emerging scholarly voices concerned to open interest and participation in Shakespeare to wider appreciation and use. The essays discuss topics ranging from ethically-informed pedagogy to discussions of public partnerships, from accessible theater for people with disabilities to the use of Shakespeare in technical and community colleges. Inclusive Shakespeares contributes to national conversations about the role of literature in the larger project of inclusion, using Shakespeare Studies as the medium to critically examine interactions between personal identity and academia at large. Sonya Freeman Loftis (co-editor) is Chair of English and Professor of English at Morehouse College, USA, where she specializes in Renaissance literature and disability studies. She is the author of Shakespeare and Disability Studies (2021), Imagining Autism (2015), and Shakespeare's Surrogates (2013), as well as the co-editor of Shakespeare's Hamlet in an Era of Textual Exhaustion (2017). Her work has appeared in Shakespeare Survey, The Disability Studies Reader, Disability Studies Quarterly, and Shakespeare Bulletin. She currently serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies, Disability Studies Quarterly, Review of Disability Studies, and Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture. Mardy Philippian (co-editor) is Associate Professor of English Studies, former Associate Dean for the College of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Communication, and Director of the Literature and Language concentration at Lewis University, USA, where he teaches courses in Shakespeare, Milton, and early modern English literature. Since 2011, he has served as a member of the editorial board of The Oswald Review: International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Criticism in the Discipline of English. His reviews, articles, and book chapters have appeared in Literature and Film Quarterly, Film Criticism, Prose Studies, Forum for World Literature Studies, in the edited collection Recovering Disability in Early Modern England (2013), and in Early Modern Culture. Justin P. Shaw (co-editor) is an Assistant Professor of English at Clark University where his teaching and research explores the intersections of race, emotions, and disability in Shakespeare and early modern English texts. He is completing a book project that examines how disability and racial identity are articulated through melancholic discourse in drama, poetry and prose. Committed to both public and traditional scholarship, his work appears in Early Theatre, White People in Shakespeare (Bloomsbury, 2022), and the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Race, Travel, and Identity in Early Modern England, 1550-1700. He is a former fellow of the James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference, has helped to curate exhibits for the Michael C. Carlos Museum such as Desire & Consumption: The New World in the Age of Shakespeare and First Folio: The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, and has developed the extensive digital humanities project, Shakespeare and the Players.

Abstract: English as a global lingua franca interacts with other languages across a wide range of multilingual contexts. Combining insights from linguistics, education studies, and psychology, this book addresses the role of English within the current linguistic dynamics of globalization. It takes Singapore, Hong Kong, and Dubai as case studies to illustrate the use of English in different multilingual urban areas, arguing that these are places where competing historical assessments, and ideological conceptions of monolingualism and multilingualism, are being acted out most forcefully. It critically appraises the controversial concept of multilingual advantages, and studies multilingual cross-linguistic influence in relation to learning English in bilingual heritage contexts. It also scrutinises multilingual language policies in their impact on attitudes, identities, and investment into languages. Engaging and accessible, it is essential reading for academic researchers and advanced students of bi- and multilingualism, globalization, linguistic diversity, World Englishes, sociolinguistics, and second/third language acquisition

Abstract: The first-ever critical anthology of the death arts in Renaissance England, this book draws together over 60 extracts and 20 illustrations to establish and analyse how people grappled with mortality in the 16th and 17th centuries. As well as providing a comprehensive resource of annotated and modernized excerpts, this engaging study includes commentary on authors and overall texts, discussions of how each excerpt is constitutive and expressive of the death arts, and suggestions for further reading. The extended Introduction takes into account death's intersections with print, gender, sex, and race, surveying the period's far-reaching preoccupation with, and anticipatory reflection upon, the cessation of life. For researchers, instructors, and students interested in medieval and early modern history and literature, the Reformation, memory studies, book history, and print culture, this indispensable resource provides at once an entry point into the field of early modern death studies and a springboard for further research

Abstract: 'New speakers' is a term used to describe those who have learnt a minority language not within their home or community settings, but through bilingual education, immersion or migration. Looking specifically at the impact of new speakers on language policy, this book provides an authoritative and detailed examination of minority language policy in Wales, Scotland, Ireland, the Basque Autonomous Community, Navarre, Catalonia and Galicia. Based on interviews with politicians, senior civil servants, academics and civil society activists, it assesses the extent to which interventions derived from a new speakers' perspective has been incorporated into official language practice. It describes several challenges faced by new speakers, before proposing specific recommendations on how to integrate them into established minority language communities. Shedding new light on the deeper issues faced by minority language communities, it is essential reading for students and researchers in sociolinguistics, language policy and planning, language education, bi- and multilingualism

Abstract: This study investigates how ability based social expectations embedded in feminine norms affect the conceptualisation of disability and shape subjective strategies for negotiating disabled status in the process of becoming a ‘disabled woman’. I drew on the theory of social constructivism (Berger and Luckmann 1966) and researched the biographical experiences of twenty (20) young physically disabled women, living in Pakistan. The purpose was to investigate the sociocultural processes and practices that provide disabled women with knowledge about gender and disability in their life course. Among twenty interlocutors, the biographies of three blind women were selected for detailed case-reconstruction. Analysis revealed that the family’s interpretation of their daughter’ disability significantly influences the social integration of disabled women and their understanding of disability. In families with a lower socioeconomic background, deeply internalised norms of femininity intensify the social exclusion of blind women. Conversely, the upper class families were found to be active in overcoming the disabling barriers by providing means of instrumental support to disabled women. The research demonstrated that higher education is comprehended by the interlocutors and their families as the key source of gaining social inclusion. The family’s appreciation of higher education is intertwined with their desire to enhance the marriage prospects of their young physically disabled daughter. However, disabled women perceive higher education as a means of becoming economically independent. Since social recognition as ‘woman’ is closely associated with women’s ability to fulfil gender role expectations, physically disabled women relate strongly to the cultural notion of femininity to resist the disability aspect of their identity. Consequently, they do not absolutely challenge the repressive norms of femininity despite being educated and economically independent women.

Abstract: "Between 1750 and 1840, the home took on unprecedented social and emotional significance. Focusing on the design, decoration, and reception of a range of elite and middling class homes from this period, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 demonstrates that the material culture of domestic life was central to how this function of the home was experienced, expressed, and understood at this time. Examining craft production and collection, gift exchange and written description, inheritance and loss, it carefully unpacks the material processes that made the home a focus for contemporaries’ social and emotional lives. The first book on its subject, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 employs methodologies from both art history and material culture studies to examine previously unpublished interiors, spaces, texts, images, and objects. Utilising extensive archival research; visual, material, and textual analysis; and histories of emotion, sociability, and materiality, it sheds light on the decoration and reception of a broad array of domestic spaces. In so doing, it writes a new history of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century domestic space, establishing the materiality of the home as a crucial site for identity formation, social interaction, and emotional expression. Between 1750 and 1840, the home took on unprecedented social and emotional significance. Abstract: In The American Historical Imaginary: Contested Narratives of the Past in Mass Culture Caroline Guthrie examines the American relationship to versions of the past that are known to be untrue and asks why do these myths persist, and why do so many people hold them so dear? To answer these questions, she examines popular sites where fictional versions of history are formed, played through, and solidified. From television's reality show winners and time travelers, to the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, to the movies of Quentin Tarantino, this book examines how mass culture imagines and reimagines the most controversial and painful parts of American history. In doing so, Guthrie explores how contemporary ideas of national identity are tied to particular versions of history that valorize white masculinity and ignores oppression and resistance. Through her explanation and analysis of what she calls the historical imaginary, Guthrie offers new ways of attempting to combat harmful myths of the past through the imaginative engagements they have dominated for so long

Abstract: "Black Neo-Victoriana is the first book-length study on contemporary re-imaginations of Blackness in the long nineteenth century. Located at the intersections of postcolonial studies, Black studies, and neo-Victorian criticism, this interdisciplinary collection engages with the global trend to reimagine and rewrite Black Victorian subjectivities that have been continually marginalised in both historical and cultural discourses. Contributions cover a range of media, from novels and drama to film, television and material culture, and draw upon cultural formations such as Black fandom, Black dandyism, or steamfunk. The book evidences how neo-Victorian studies benefits from reading re-imaginations of the long nineteenth century vis-à-vis Black epistemologies, which unhinge neo-Victorianism's dominant spatial and temporal axes and reroute them to conceive of the (neo-)Victorian through Blackness"

Abstract: Queer spaces are crucial for the construction of LGBTQ+ communities, as they constitute places where queer subjects can create political, social, and affective alliances. Júlia Braga Neves shows how these spaces are pivotal for the representation of queer history in the fictional works by the British authors Sarah Waters and Alan Hollinghurst, whose characters and plots are articulated through and within London's sexual geographies. Considering the intersection between gender, sexuality, and class, this study engages with spatial, queer, feminist, and Marxist theories as a means to reflect on London, queer historiography, and the relationship between subject and urban space.

Abstract: Klappentext: Issues of cultural identity and cultural heritage are at the heart of contemporary discourses in many parts of the world. They are used to identify and address the inequalities by marginalized groups; however, they also feed the re-nationalization and ethno-purist fantasies. But what exactly is culture? In this volume, the authors explore how culture is conceptualized and practised by young people in eight countries in numerous and very diverse contexts - schools, interest clubs, organizations and informal youth groups. The chapters show that concepts of culture vary widely within and across sites, regions and countries, highlighting the common, as well as particular, challenges that notions of identity and heritage pose for young people who often aspire to an inclusive and open society.

Its underlying aim is to bring about a more dynamic and inclusive understanding of Scottish culture. Rooted in literary history and both comparative and interdisciplinary in scope, the volume covers the key aspects and genres of traditional literature, including the Gaelic tradition, from the medieval period to the present.Key theoretical and conceptual issues raised by the historical analysis of Scotland's rich store of ballad, song, and folk narrative are discussed in separate chapters. The volume also explores why and how Scottish literary writers have been inspired by traditional genres, modes, and motifs, and the intermingling of folk and literary traditions in writers such as Burns, Scott, and Hogg. It also uncovers the folkloric and mythopoetic materials of early Scottish literature, and the vitality of neglected aspects of Scottish popular culture.Key FeaturesExplores the cultural meanings of 'tradition' and 'living tradition' and the roles of historical and modern informants, storytellers, and singersExamines the relationship between the oral and the literary in Scots, Gaelic, and EnglishDraws on a wide range of examples including: Francis J. Abstract: Klappentext: "Now in its second edition, The Routledge Atlas of African American History traces the epic journey of African Americans' four-hundred-years in North America. With more than 75 full-color maps, charts, and illustrations, this volume illuminates the myriad of contributions from Black Americans to the nation's political, economic, cultural, and social history. Jonathan Earle begins the sweeping story with the African roots of Black America and moves through important developments such as the Underground Railroad, Emancipation and the Civil War, African Americans in the U.S. Armed Forces, the spread of Jim Crow Laws, and the long Civil Rights Movement. This updated edition also introduces new essays on Black Seminoles, the National Women's Club Movement, Black political realignment and the rise of Barack Obama, and Black Lives Matter protests. Other diverse topics include: the AME Church, buffalo soldiers, historically Black colleges and universities, black nationalism, racial violence and white supremacy. Examining both the geographical and historical context of the African American experience, this book is an indispensable reference for students of American history, African American history, and anyone interested in the Black experience"--

Abstract: "This book adopts a corpus-based discourse analysis approach to the study of the communicative practices of pick-up artists, offering a systematic exploration of distinct language use in an online community that uses speed-seduction practices for short-term dating and sex. Drawing on a multi-million word corpus comprising data from online forums, social media, informational websites, and YouTube videos, the volume explores the verbal practices and narrative framing techniques that pick-up artists (PUAs) draw upon in their interactions with women and the terminology-heavy language used in teaching pick-up to foster perceptions of scientific validity. The book also unpacks videos and reports of live interactions to study naturally occurring PUA discourse from different perspectives but also to more closely examine conceptual metaphors of competition and violence and critically reflect on the ethical considerations of working with such communities. This book will appeal to students and scholars in such disciplines as discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, computer-mediated communication, and language and media, as well as those interested in the study of language use online"--...

Abstract: Since the 1990s, an increasing number of young men in Cameroon have aspired to play football as a career and a strategy to migrate abroad. Migration through the sport promises fulfillment of masculine dreams of sports stardom, as well as opportunities to earn a living that have been hollowed out by the country's long economic stalemate. The aspiring footballers are increasingly turning to Pentecostal Christianity, which allows them to challenge common tropes of young men as stubborn and promiscuous, while also offering a moral and bodily regime that promises success despite the odds. Yet the transnational sports market is tough and unpredictable: it demands disciplined young bodies and introduces new forms of uncertainty. This book unpacks young Cameroonians' football dreams, Pentecostal faith, obligations to provide, and desires to migrate to highlight the precarity of masculinity in structurally adjusted Africa and neoliberal capitalism

Abstract: "This is the first book to explore the full significance of sport fans and fandom from an international and interdisciplinary perspective, across different sports, communities and levels of engagement. It gives a comprehensive overview of the undeniable economic and cultural influence of sport industries for which fans are the driving force. The book examines different theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of fans, including typologies of fandom, and presents cutting-edge discussion across broad thematic areas such as performance and identity, the business of fandom, and fandom and media. It considers the experiences of diverse and marginalised fan groups, with an emphasis on intersectional analysis, and shines new light on key contemporary themes such as fan activism, violence and deviance, mobility and migration, and the transformative effects of digital and social media. This volume includes chapters by many of the leading scholars responsible for having laid the foundation for sport fan research as well as early-career scholars who examine the newest developments in media technologies, legalized betting, gaming, and fantasy sports. Including perspectives from disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, psychology, management, economics, and media studies, this book is essential reading for anybody interested in the study of sport and wider society or fans and subcultures more broadly"--

Abstract: "Having a "good" sense of humor generally means being able to take a joke without getting offended--laughing even at a taboo thought or at another's expense. The insinuation is that laughter eases social tension and creates solidarity in an overly politicized social world. But, do the stakes change when the jokes are racist? In The Souls of White Jokes Raúl Pérez argues that we must genuinely confront this unsettling question in order to fully understand the persistence of anti-black racism and white supremacy in American society today. W.E.B. Du Bois's prescient essay The Souls of White Folk was one of the first to theorize whiteness as a social and political construct based on a feeling of superiority over racialized others--a kind of racial contempt. Pérez extends this theory to the study of humor, connecting theories of racial formation to parallel ideas about humor stemming from laughter at another's misfortune. Critically synthesizing scholarship on race, humor, and emotions, he uncovers a key function of humor as a tool for producing racial alienation, dehumanization, exclusion, and even violence. Pérez tracks this use of humor from blackface minstrelsy to contemporary contexts, including police culture, politics, and far-right extremists. Rather than being harmless fun, this humor plays a central role in reinforcing and mobilizing racist ideology and power under the guise of amusement. The Souls of White Jokes exposes this malicious side of humor, while also revealing a new facet of racism today. Though it can be comforting to imagine racism as coming from racial hatred and anger, the terrifying reality is that it is tied up in seemingly benign, even joyful, everyday interactions as well-- and for racism to be eradicated we must face this truth"--

Abstract: This resource offers a history of fair play in Britain from earliest times to the present, asking whether it is in fact a British, or alternatively an English, characteristic at all - and if so, whether fair play still matters today?

Abstract: This book uses popular culture to highlight the intersections and interplay between ideologies, technological advancement and mobilities as they shape contemporary Irish identities. Marshalling case studies drawn from a wide spectrum of popular culture, including the mediated construction of prominent sporting figures, Troubles-set sitcom Derry Girls, and poignant drama feature Philomena, Anthony P. McIntyre offers a wide-ranging discussion of contemporary Irishness, tracing its entanglement with notions of mobility, regionality and identity. The book will appeal to students and scholars of Irish studies, cultural studies, as well as film and media studies. Anthony P. McIntyre is a Teaching Fellow in Film and Media Studies at University College Dublin, Ireland. He is Co-editor of The Aesthetics and Affects of Cuteness (2017) and recent publications have appeared in Television & New Media, Feminist Media Studies, and European Journal of Cultural Studies.

Abstract: The Politics of Speech in Later Twentieth-Century Poetry: Local Tongues in Heaney, Brooks, Harrison, and Clifton argues that local speech became a central facet of English-language poetry in the second half of the twentieth century. It is based on a key observation about four major poets from both sides of the Atlantic: Seamus Heaney, Gwendolyn Brooks, Tony Harrison, and Lucille Clifton all respond to societal crises by arranging, reproducing, and reconceiving their particular versions of local speech in poetic form. The book’s overarching claim is that “local tongues” in poetry have the capacity to bridge aesthetic and sociopolitical realms because nonstandard local speech declares its distinction from the status quo and binds people who have been subordinated by hierarchical social conditions, while harnessing those versions of speech into poetic structures can actively counter the very hierarchies that would degrade those languages. The diverse local tongues of these four poets marshaled into the forms of poetry situate them at once in literary tradition, in local contexts, and in prevailing social constructs.

Abstract: This book takes a close look at Shakespeare’s engagement with the flurry of controversy and activity surrounding the concept of conversion in post-Reformation England. For playhouse audiences during the period, conversional thought encompassed a markedly diverse, fluid amalgamation of ideas, practices, and arguments centered on the means by which an individual could move from one category of identity to another. In an analysis that includes chapter-length readings of The Taming of the Shrew, Henry IV Part I, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, and The Tempest, the book argues that Shakespearean drama made a unique and substantive intervention in public discourse surrounding conversion, and continues to speak meaningfully about conversional experience for audiences in the present age. It will be of particular benefit to students and scholars with an interest in theatrical history, performance theory, theology, cultural studies, race studies, and gender studies. Stephen Wittek is Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. He is the author of The Media Players: Shakespeare, Middleton, Jonson, and the Idea of News (2015), and co-editor of two multi-authored collections: Performing Conversion: Cities, Theatre and Early Modern Transformations (2021) and Shakespeare and Virtual Reality (2021). His work has also appeared in journals including Studies in English Literature, Digital Humanities Quarterly, and Journal of Cognitive History.

Abstract: Introduction -- Prepositions -- Plural Nouns -- Discussion and Conclusion -- Roundup.
Abstract: This book discusses eight grammatical items, with main focus on prepositions and plural nouns, to illustrate the structure of Japanese English or the English spoken by 32 Japanese nationals who are the L2 users of English. Adopting an inductive, theory-neutral, analysis of empirical data collected from recordings of presentational talks, the author demonstrates how standard and nonstandard grammatical forms are distributed, and categorizes these based largely on functional factors. The book describes grammatical forms as a fundamental aspect of linguistic study and adopts a corpus-driven approach to qualify structural features characterizing usage data. This formalization of language usage patterns also facilitates the development of ‘locally’ relevant norms and thus presents alternatives to the normative varieties traditionally adopted. It examines the effects of multicompetence and unpacks the grammar of Japanese English. The book is of interest to researchers, educators, and students concerned with issues related to World Englishes, English as a lingua franca, English language teaching, and multilingualism, this text is vital to studies in global English language use.

Abstract: Building on and complementing existing overviews of early modern women's writing, this handbook has a more conceptual and theoretical focus in addition to extending historical and critical work. It will also integrate the disciplinary challenges raised by early modern women's writing more fully into critical work on the Renaissance-again, this differentiates this work from other wide-ranging volumes on the topic. It seeks, through a range of approaches, to ask larger questions about women's writing and its relationship(s) to writing and culture more generally. Implicitly it questions the category of 'women's' writing, by examining how far gender and constructions of gender inflect authorship, reception, and style, and how we can integrate provisional and partial identifications into our understanding of early modern women's discourse.
