Abstract: Since the late-1990s, diplomatic historians have emphasized the importance of international and transnational processes, flows, and events to the history of the United States in the world. Rethinking U.S. World Power provides an alternative to these scholarly frameworks by assembling a diverse group of historians to explore the impact of the United States and its domestic history on U.S. foreign relations and world affairs. In so doing, the collection underlines that, even in a global age, domestic politics and phenomena were crucial to the history of U.S. foreign policy and international relations more broadly. Abstract: “Dr Myrodias makes an important contribution by showing how the response to the recent crises solidified Greece and Portugal’s subordinate position in the Eurozone. This was part-engineered in the interests of northern European economies – a dismaying replay of how European colonial states earlier engineered the dependent status of their colonies to boost their own economic growth and political power. Plus ça change…” - Robert H. Wade, Professor of Political Economy, London School of Economics (LSE) Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought (2008) “Dr Myrodias’ concise and brisk analysis of the fate of Greece and Portugal in recent crises has numerous distinctive virtues. Of these, the most important is that Dr Myrodias frames the core issues as matters of economic theory. A more compelling test of theoretical economics is difficult to imagine.” - James K. Galbraith, Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. Chair in Government/Business Relations and Professor of Government, University of Texas at Austin “The Euro Area has lurched from crisis to crisis in the near quarter of a century since its foundation. In this fascinating overview Dr Myrodias takes us carefully through these events that have at various times threatened its very existence.” - Jagjit S. Chadha, Director of the National Institute of Economic & Social Research (NIESR), London, UK Global crises throughout history have shaken humanity and transformed economies and societies. The Eurozone faced two such crises soon after its foundation. This book brings new insights regarding the Eurozone’s response to the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 and the Covid-19 pandemic and its effectiveness in dealing with the macroeconomic imbalances in Europe. Is the Eurozone more resilient now? This book is an indispensable addition to the literature on the recent global crises and the Eurozone for both academics and policymakers who are eager to delve deeper into these vital questions. Abstract: This comprehensive Handbook provides chapter length surveys of the history of Christian missions and Christian churches on the African continent since the time of Christ. Africa is rapidly becoming the most Christianized region of the world. While common narratives about Christianity tend to present Christianity as a set of ideas and beliefs imposed on Africa from the outside, such narratives hold little meaning for African Christians or for those seeking to understand Christianity in Africa as an indigenous faith. The proposed collection of chapters therefore provides a set of scholarly starting points for a new set of narratives. The chapters collected here communicate an idea of Christianity as it has been embraced among African peoples at particular historical moments. It therefore grants voice to the various strands of African Christianity on their own terms, and offers scholarly study of what these voices teach us about how the world's most adhered to religion is practiced and understood on the continent of Africa. Abstract: As computational power, the volume of available data, IT systems’ autonomy, and the human-like capabilities of machines increase, robots and AI systems have substantial and growing implications for the law and raise a host of challenges to current legal doctrines. The main question to be answered is whether the foundations and general principles of private law and criminal law offer a functional and adaptive legal framework for the “autonomous systems” phenomena. The main purpose of this book is to identify and explore possible trajectories for the development of civil and criminal liability; for our understanding of the attribution link to autonomous systems; and, in particular, for the punishment of unlawful conduct in connection with their operation. AI decision-making processes – including judicial sentencing – also warrant close attention in this regard. Since AI is moving faster than the process of regulatory recalibration, this book provides valuable insights on its redesign and on the harmonization, at the European level, of the current regulatory frameworks, in order to keep pace with technological changes. Providing a broader and more comprehensive picture of the legal challenges posed by autonomous systems, this book covers a wide range of topics, including the regulation of autonomous vehicles, data protection and governance, personality rights, intellectual property, corporate governance, and contract conclusion and termination issues arising from automated decisions, blockchain technology and AI applications, particularly in the banking and finance sectors. The authors are legal experts from around the world with extensive academic and/or practical experience in these areas.

Abstract: “This is a book whose time has come. Covid-19 should have forced a fundamental shift in thinking around the way African healthcare systems are organised, and how and where they procure essential health commodities. I recommend this book for every African policy maker, parliamentarian, opposition politician, financier, and especially for the political champions and civil servants in the Ministries of Health, Finance, Trade and Industry, Science and Education across the African continent.” --Dr Skhumbuzo Ngozwana, President & CEO Kiara Health; Board Chairman Biovac; Board Member, Federation of African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations, South Africa This open access edited volume focuses on the scope and benefits of strengthening local industrial-health linkages. The Covid-19 pandemic collapsed international supply chains for health. That experience brought home to African policy makers the critical nature of local manufacturing capabilities for sustaining and strengthening health care, and highlighted the pandemic benefits of India’s much stronger industrial base. At that time, a network of researchers in East Africa, India and the UK were investigating how to address the crisis of cancer care in low-resource health systems. Their project, uniquely, focused on the scope and benefits of strengthening local industrial-health linkages. The project researchers were also drawn into the pressing demands of Covid19 response. The result is this very timely book. The authors link their research on cancer to pandemic experience, and they draw sharp lessons for how countries can enhance their populations’ health security. The authors argue that improving cancer care is crucial for human wellbeing and more inclusive health care. They challenge policy makers to bring together health needs, health innovations and improved industrial capabilities to embed better cancer care and broader health system improvement in local industrial innovation and development. Abstract: American Borders: Inclusion and Exclusion in US Culture provides an overview of American culture produced in a range of contexts, from the founding of the nation to the age of globalization and neoliberalism, in order to understand the diverse literary landscapes of the United States from a twenty-first century perspective. The authors confront American exceptionalism, discourses on freedom and democracy, and US foundational narratives by reassessing the literary canon and exploring ethnic literature, culture, and film with a focus on identity and exclusion. Their contributions envision different manifestations of conviviality and estrangement and deconstruct neoliberal slogans, analyzing hospitable inclusion in relation to national history and ideologies. By looking at representations of foreignness and conditional belonging in literature and film from different ethnic traditions, the volume fleshes out a new border dialectic that conveys the heterogeneity of American boundaries beyond the opposition inside/outside. Her research interests include African American literature, space studies, memory, nostalgia, and speculative fiction. Mónica Fernández Jiménez holds a PhD in English from the University of Valladolid, Spain, and currently works as a translator in England. Abstract: This open access book explains how leading business organizations attempt to achieve the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced information technologies. These technologies can produce tremendous insights and benefits. But they can also invade privacy, perpetuate bias, and otherwise injure people and society. To use these technologies successfully, organizations need to implement them responsibly and ethically. The question is: how to do this? Data ethics management, and this book, provide some answers. The authors interviewed and surveyed data ethics managers at leading companies. They asked why these experts see data ethics as important and how they seek to achieve it. This book conveys the results of that research on a concise, accessible way. Much of the existing writing on data and AI ethics focuses either on macro-level ethical principles, or on micro-level product design and tooling. The interviews showed that companies need a third component: data ethics management. This third element consists of the management structures, processes, training and substantive benchmarks that companies use to operationalize their high-level ethical principles and to guide and hold accountable their developers. Data ethics management is the connective tissue makes ethical principles real. It is the focus of this book. This book should be of use to organizations that wish to improve their own data ethics management efforts, legislators and policymakers who hope to build on existing management practices, scholars who study beyond compliance business behavior, and members of the public who want to understand better the threats that AI poses and how to reduce them.

Abstract: Digital technologies are playing a growing role in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They are both a tool both for achieving developmental outcomes and a driver of change. However, the use of digital technologies also entails certain legal challenges. The purpose of this book is to highlight these challenges and suggest solutions. Written by leading researchers from six countries, who analyse legislative solutions from around the world, it includes chapters on the benefits of asset tokenisation, the role of artificial intelligence in achieving sustainable development, legal issues in the green digital transformation, and human rights in a digital world. Through a mixture of fundamental analysis and real-world examples, readers will learn how emerging digital technologies can help achieve various SDGs and what legal challenges arise from their application. This important resource will be of interest to academics, government and legal officials whose work involves the legal regulation of the introduction and use of new digital technologies, as well as sustainable development challenges. Legal experts engaged in the design of new legal infrastructures during the current phase of digital, climatic and social transformation in private, public and social organizations will also find it useful.

Abstract: This book explores how Chicana literature often represents gender violence while simultaneously presenting strategies of survival in response. Adrianna M. Santos aims to contribute to a broader conversation concerning the intersections between Chicana literature and decolonial trauma theory, one which questions the colonial matrix of power and the universality of Western knowledge. Santos argues that Chicana survival narratives arise out of colonial wounds and form scars that both mark and protect the violated body. Cicatrix Poetics, Trauma and Healing in the Literary Borderlands proposes a “cicatrix poetics” that makes bold gestures toward healing and narrative/storytelling as survival. The book contends that the cicatrix fashioned through artistic expression is a necessary component for Chicana communities—not just to survive, but to thrive. The books presents several case studies that examine transformative narrativity and by theorizing the texts as survival narratives, social protest works that bring attention to violence and erasure, the chapters explore how literature can be an effective catalyst for both social change and personal transformation, an orientation towards freedom, liberation through love. Adrianna M. Santos is Associate Professor of English at Texas A&M University–San Antonio, USA, and advisor of the Mexican American Student Association. She has published in Aztlán, Chicana/Latina Studies, Shakespeare Bulletin and Latina Critical Feminism and is co-editor of The Bard in the Borderlands, and El Mundo Zurdo 8. .

Abstract: David Hughes was one of the few academics who questioned the mainstream narrative following the attacks that triggered the War on Terror. That gave him a crucial advantage when the Covid emergency was declared. In this provocative study he explores in depth how governments have declared war on their populations to achieve a transformation to a technocratic dictatorship. The combination with psychological techniques developed over many decades makes this a particularly grave danger, which requires careful dissection to be understood and resisted. This book, the first of a two-volume set, provides that analysis. ~ Kees van der Pijl, author of States of Emergency. Keeping the Global Population in Check (Clarity Press, 2022) (The Netherlands) The silent coup engineering global central control depends heavily on asymmetrical warfare – including extensive investment in and application of psychological and neurological weaponry. In this book, David Hughes documents the development and application of a wide portfolio of soft and hard – and often invisible – weapons to brutally manipulate minds and emotions to engineer the adoption of technocracy. The first step to not falling victim is to see these 21st century weapons of war clearly. Hughes’ formidable scholarship helps you to do so. ~ Catherine Austin Fitts, Publisher, The Solari Report (United States) David A. Hughes is Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Lincoln. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Oxford University and holds doctorates in German Studies (Duke University) and International Relations (Oxford Brookes University). His research focuses on psychological warfare, "9/11," "Covid-19," the deep state, technocracy, global class relations, and resurgent totalitarianism. Camouflaged by “Covid-19,” an undeclared global class war was initiated in 2020, aimed at replacing liberal democracy with technocracy, a novel, biodigital form of totalitarianism. The opening campaign involved the largest psychological operation in history, intended to demoralise, disorientate, and debilitate the public. This volume deals with the application of shock and stress, trauma-based mind control, the use of fear and threat, cognitive attack, weaponised deception, and techniques for turning society against itself.

Abstract: Can we regulate something that doesn’t exist yet? Can Europe create its own Silicon Valley? Who gets to create technological value in today’s world? Whatever happened to the once-flourishing idea of rags to riches? Will new and exciting innovations only ever come from big tech companies? Can the EU establish its own flexible framework for boosting innovation, e.g. by facilitating the transformative use of technologies and data? This book seeks to answer these questions by exploring the differences in copyright culture in Europe and the United States, with its flexible fair use framework. The findings are anything but obvious, and decades of case law on both sides of the Atlantic tell a story of judges going to great lengths to deal with new challenges while navigating the imperfections of statutory law – both where it is too broadly formulated and where it is too prescriptive. How can the population’s creative potential best be fostered? What do software innovations have in common with the evolution of living organisms? What are the vulnerabilities of distributed creativity? Answers are sought in the processes that came into being during the early years of the digital revolution and were then forced to take a back seat as control of the means of production was increasingly placed in the hands of tech companies. The findings and insights presented here are highly relevant for today’s digital policymaking. Market concentration processes in innovation haven’t ceased; they are ongoing. And in an age where data-driven services are creating and reinforcing global oligopolies, the question posed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Google v. Oracle is now more relevant than ever: who should hold the keys to digital innovation?

Abstract: This edited volume offers innovative perspectives on the study of music as cultural diplomacy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a region often overlooked in such discussions. It offers an innovative contribution to the field of ethnomusicology, as well as political science and international relations, by highlighting the agency of non-state actors (local voices, communities, and grassroots organizations), thereby contributing towards de-centering the state, hitherto conceived as the chief player in cultural diplomacy. This volume is divided into four main parts organized along the following themes: 1. History and Historiography, 2. Migration, Diaspora, and Ethics, 3. Statecraft and Music Making, and 4. Affective and Sensorial Diplomacy. The perspectives offered in this volume offer a deeper exploration of bottom-up initiatives of cultural diplomacy through music, instead of the more usual analyses of top-down, state-directed programmes. Overall, the aim is to reconceptualize Middle Eastern, North African and Arab Gulf musical practices in their relationship to power and cultural diplomacy in order build a broader and pluri-dimensional account of these contentious relationships. Maria M. Rijo Lopes da Cunha has been a Danish Institute in Damascus Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Ethnomusicology at the Department for Arts and Cultural Studies of the University of Copenhagen (2019 - 2021 and 2022). Jonathan Shannon is Professor of Anthropology at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, The City University of New York. Søren Møller Sørensen is Associate Professor Emeritus at Department for Arts and Cultural Studies, University of Copenhagen. Virginia Danielson retired as Director of Libraries, New York University Abu Dhabi and is currently an Associate of the Music Department at Harvard University.

Abstract: This book presents a fresh approach to cybersecurity issues, seeking not only to analyze the legal landscape of the European Union and its Member States, but to do so in an interdisciplinary manner, involving scholars from diverse backgrounds – ranging from legal experts to ICT and engineering professionals. Cybersecurity requirements must be understood in a broader context, encompassing not just conventional aspects, but also emerging topics. This can only be achieved through an interdisciplinary approach. Indeed, cybersecurity should be consistently considered in relation to cybercrime and/or cyber defense, while examining it through the lens of specific domains that are intertwined with various legal fields. Moreover, it is crucial to uphold ethical standards and safeguard fundamental rights, particularly regarding personal data protection. By adopting this comprehensive perspective, the significance of cybersecurity in the exercise of public authority becomes apparent. It also plays an essential role in upholding the fundamental values of both individual Member States and the EU as a whole, such as the rule of law. Moreover, it fosters trust, transparency, and effectiveness in market relations and public administration interactions. In turn, the book draws on the expertise of its authors to provide insights into ICT components and technologies. Understanding these elements holistically is essential to viewing every "cyber" phenomenon from a legal standpoint. In addition to the holistic and interdisciplinary approach it presents, the book offers a captivating exploration of cybersecurity and an engaging read for anyone interested in the field.

Abstract: In the automotive sector, digitalisation, connectivity and automation are rapidly expanding. In tomorrow’s vehicles, human beings will merely be passengers – which raises a host of complex legal issues regarding accidents involving self-driving vehicles. This book is the first to offer a comprehensive, global overview of civil liability regimes for all levels of vehicle automation in jurisdictions that represent some of the most important markets for the automotive industry. After a technical introduction to how self-driving cars work, the individual chapters analyse the liability for driving automation at SAE J3016 levels 0 through 5 from a country-specific perspective. All chapters were written by experts in the field and follow a uniform legal structure. Hence, the book offers an essential comparative analysis of similarities and differences in the jurisdictions examined, while also providing suggestions for future legislative changes at the national and international level. The book is not only relevant for legal scholars and practitioners but will also be of particular interest to anyone involved in the design, manufacture, distribution and operation of self-driving vehicles.

Abstract: Chapter 1. Journalism and the Smart City -- Chapter 2. Configuring the Case of the Quayside Project -- Chapter 3. Chronicle of a Mediatized Controversy -- Chapter 4. The Quayside Project: Some Reassembly Required./.
Abstract: “Bob Hanke’s “Smarter Toronto” is an important study of a key event in the recent history of urban planning, technological innovataion and urban journalism. The book masterfully weaves together complex theoretical ideas while remaining readable and deeply engaged with the events it describes. Hanke’s account of Google’s failed Sidewalk project in Toronto should interest anyone concerned with media, urban democracy and the future of cities.” —Will Straw, James McGill Professor of Urban Media Studies, McGill University This book bridges media, technocultural, urban, and journalism studies to examine the role of journalism in relation to a smart city project on Toronto’s waterfront. From the announcement of the public-private partnership called Sidewalk Toronto to the project’s termination, a mediatized controversy unfolded. Through an assemblage approach to this project and a case study of The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, it follows the actors and chronicles the Quayside project story as a conversation about the promise and perils of a future “smart” neighbourhood. In the news of Waterfront Toronto, Sidewalk Labs, other actors, events, and developments, there were multiple voices and views, interpretations and arguments, that manifested conflicting interests and values. As a locally situated actor, journalism produced a porous discourse that expressed a proposeand- public pushback movement. This work of articulating mediation conditioned the project’s alteration and dissolution within asymmetrical relations of power. In addition to a wave of opposition that inflected the project’s enactment, a time lag between project time and governmental policymaking made the controversy over this future urban space intractable. With their residual symbolic power, quality journalism contributed to dialogical urban learning. Bob Hanke, a former a faculty member in the Department of Communication & Media Studies, York University, Canada, is currently an independent scholar living in Toronto.

Abstract: This volume presents an analytical and empirical overview of the array of issues that the Mexican media faces in the post-authoritarian age, which jointly explains how a partially accomplished democracy, its authoritarian inertias, and its unintended consequences hinder the democratic performance of the media. This is analyzed from three points of view: the stalemate Mexican media system and ineffective regulations, the conditions of risk and insecurity of the journalists on the field, and the limits of freedom of expression, political substance, and inclusiveness of media content. A binational effort, with research from US and Mexican authors, a wide analytic perspective is provided on the macro, meso, and micro levels, allowing for a deep conceptual richness and a comprehensive understanding of the Mexican case. With leading researchers in the field, the volume revolves around the problems of the media in post-authoritarian democracies. By answering the questions of how and why the Mexican media has not fully democratized, the works encompassed here can resonate with and are relevant to other post-authoritarian countries and academic disciplines. Abstract: 'A marvelous and timely book on Morocco’s national treasure Farida Benlyazid. An elegant and playful spiral structure accommodates Martin’s deep understanding of Benlyazid's many contexts, from the socioeconomic to the spiritual.' ----Laura Marks, Simon Fraser University, Canada 'Florence Martin has achieved an into-depth exploration of a unique and unequalled Moroccan female cineaste-biography. Well-written, nuanced and historically informed.' ---Viola Shafik, Independent scholar and filmmaker, Berlin, Germany and Cairo, Egypt This book project unfolds and analyzes the work of Moroccan director, producer, and scriptwriter Farida Benlyazid, whose career extends from the beginning of cinema in independent Morocco to the present. This study of her work and career provides a unique perspective on an under-represented cinema, the gender politics of cinema in Morocco, and the contribution of Arab women directors to global cinema and to a gendered understanding of Muslim ethics and aesthetics in film. A pioneer in Moroccan cinema, Farida Benlyazid has been successful at negotiating the sometimes abrupt turns of Morocco’s rocky 20th century history: from Morocco under French occupation to the advent of Moroccan independence in 1956; the end of the international status of Tangier, her native city, in 1959; the “years of lead” under the reign of Hassan II; and finally Mohamed VI’s current reign since 1999. As a result, she has a long view of Morocco’s politics of self-representation as well as of the representation of Moroccan women on screen Florence Martin is Dean John Blackford Van Meter Professor of French Transnational Studies at Goucher College, USA. She is the author of Screens and Veils: Maghrebi Women’s Cinema (2011) and the co-author (with Will Higbee and Jamal Bahmad) of Moroccan Cinema Uncut: Decentred Voices, Transnational Perspectives (2020).

Abstract: This book offers a nuanced reflection on the meaning of making and artisan agency, demonstrating how copper-smithing produces not only objects, but also lives, worlds, meanings, and social transformation. Through long-term ethnography, grounded in apprenticeship to master coppersmith Jesús Pérez Ornelas, Feder-Nadoff’s intimate description of communal and artisanal life in Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, México provides a critical reappraisal of aesthetics and compelling ways to think about how aura and agency are produced. By mapping flows and frictions between persons, places, and things, this study closes the gap between economic and socio-political analysis of craft, on the one hand, and aesthetic, material, and phenomenological studies of making, on the other. Although craft historically plays a prominent national, even ideological role in Mexico, as in many countries, most artisans ironically remain absent, often living in marginalized, precarious circumstances. By tracing the cycles of life, death, and afterlife, of these maker-protagonists, their bodies of knowledge, skilled performances, and objects, this poetic monograph testifies to their presence.

Abstract: Eminent lawyers from academia, international judiciary and legal practice join up to honour Professor Mads Andenas KC (Hon). Contributions form a cutting edge volume across legal disciplines led by an advisory editorial committee including Prof. Guido Alpa, Prof. Carl Baudenbacher, Prof. Eirik Bjorge, Prof. Giuseppe Conte and Prof. Duncan Fairgrieve. The general private law of tort and delict is subject to a transformation where the traditional national framework is becoming gradually less relevant. Much of the modernisation of private law takes place not at the domestic level but at a European or international level such as in international commercial conventions or EU consumer protection legislation. Remedies in regulatory law are becoming ever more important. The role of the European Court of Justice in developing general principles of contract and tort is ever increasing. Tort liability is an important subject of international conventions with the case law of the International Court of Justice developing general principles of tort liability in public international law.

Abstract: Can informal actors such as NGOs mediate peace agreements? If so, how does it work and what are the consequences for international peace mediation? This book tackles these questions and more through looking at the role of nongovernmental (NGO) mediators in promoting “inclusive peace” to negotiating parties in Myanmar’s Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) negotiations from 2011-2015. The author argues that NGO mediators, traditionally seen as part of civil society or as weak mediators with little power or leverage, have become established mediation actors alongside more formal actors and are redefining the mediation field through norm promotion. However, even if NGO mediators can promote norms, the book questions whether they should promote norms in the first place, as the NCA process shows how the promotion of inclusivity contributed to a more exclusive outcome of years of peace negotiations in Myanmar. The outcome of the NCA process presents a critical and cautionary tale of promoting a presumed universal norm into a given locale and expecting a certain outcome without understanding how an external norm interacts with existing normative frameworks. Abstract: “This study, based on a wealth of original research, analyses the production, circulation and reception of European films since 2005, considering their impact on broader cultural and social issues, notably the vexed question of what constitutes a European identity. Throughout, the author tests various theorisations and conceptual frameworks against the empirical evidence he has unearthed. His carefully considered interpretation will be widely welcomed as an important contribution to understanding European cinema.” - Andrew Spicer, Professor of Cultural Production, University of the West of England Bristol, UK This book explores how audiences in contemporary Europe engage with films from other European countries. It draws on admissions data, surveys, and focus group discussions to explain why viewers are attracted to particular European films and genres, including action-adventures, family films, biopics, period dramas, thrillers, comedies, and romances. It also examines how these films are produced and distributed, how they represent Europe, and how they affect audiences. Case-studies range from mainstream movies like Skyfall, Taken, and Asterix & Obelix: God Save Britannia, to more middlebrow and arthouse titles, such as The Lives of Others, Volver, Coco Before Chanel, Love Is All You Need, Intouchables, The Angels’ Share, Ida, The Hunt, and Blue Is the Warmest Colour. The study shows that watching European films can contribute to people’s understandings of other countries and make them feel more European. However, this is limited by the strong preference for Anglo-American action-adventures that offer few insights into the realities of European life. The book discusses what these findings mean for the European film industry, cultural policy, and scholarship on transnational and European cinema. It also considers how surveys, focus groups, databases and other methods that go beyond traditional textual analysis can offer new insights into our understanding of film. Huw D. Abstract: This edited collection represents a first-of-its-kind exploration of English-related discourses in the Caribbean. Drawing from Critical Discourse and stylistic analyses, the book's wide-ranging chapters examine language as it is produced within the complex demographic milieu of the region. It addresses a critical lack of linguistic scholarship on discourse types from the Caribbean, since the major academic focus in the post-independence era has been on descriptive and interventionist work in Creole Linguistics. This volume seeks to add new dimensions to language in practice with its focus on the development of discourse types within the region, public policy, discourses surrounding the galvanising figure of the Caribbean Prime Minister, literary discourses, and gender and media representations. As a site of great variation, linguistic and otherwise, the Caribbean provides unique insight into the interplay of the socio-political and language in contemporary societies in the Global South. Based on work presented at the University of Trinidad and Tobago’s “Stylistics, Critical Discourse Analysis and Language Use in the Caribbean” 2021 conference, the book draws together papers from established Caribbeanists seeking to bridge the existing theoretical and analytical gap between the more macro, socio-political aspects of studies in the social sciences, and the more micro features of linguistic analysis. With its breadth of coverage and analysis, this volume has implications for work being done at all levels of university scholarship in the social sciences, media discourses, decolonisation practices, and language and society in postcolonial and multi-ethnic contexts worldwide. Ryan Durgasingh is a Research Fellow at Ruhr University, Bochum, and PhD candidate at the University of Münster, Germany, where his work focuses on morphosyntactic variation in Caribbean Englishes. His research interests include stylistics, Critical Discourse Studies, variationist sociolinguistics, and corpus-based approaches to linguistic analysis. Nicha Selvon-Ramkissoon is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Education Programmes, University of Trinidad and Tobago. Abstract: This book argues for the reconstitution of the cultural in African cultural industries and societies. It posits that African cultural industries face a deep-seated problem of the crisis of normativity that is largely rooted in the coloniality of modern cultural policy and an unconscious, but pervasive anti-Black racism culture in the continent itself. The book places hope for re-animating African agency and national cultural identities in the decolonization of cultural policy and cultural industries as consciousness industries. Only through relevant cultural policy, a higher-order cross-institutional moral and ethical value system for reconstituting the cultural in post-colonies, can Africa build truly democratic, progressive, cosmopolitan, decolonized, and self-respecting citizens and societies. Using decolonial cultural policy studies, the book develops a decolonial cultural critique that locates African culture industries within the racialized power dynamics of capitalist modernity. It explores the decolonization praxis of cultural industries and acknowledges the complexity of cultural decolonization iniatives in a continent that is so diverse, interconnected, globalized, and facing newer modes of colonialism that are aggressive and covert. Abstract: “Canada desperately needs a lot more, better informed, public discussion of national defence and security issues. The consequences of insufficient attention to this critical field of public policy are unfortunately apparent every day. This book will be an invaluable aid to anyone looking to take part in an increasingly urgent debate.” —Gordon Venner, former Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy), Department of National Defence. “Canada’s security context has changed dramatically since the release of Strong, Secure, Engaged and our armed forces are poorly adapted to respond to the myriad new threats posed by revisionist autocracies, disruptive technologies or climate change. The expert insights gathered by Juneau and Lagassé should be required reading for elected leaders, policy makers, military and civilian security practitioners to gain an understanding of the most important issues that must be addressed in order to reconstitute the Canadian Armed Forces and ensure that this vital national institution is fully ready to defend our security interests in the years to come.” —Lieutenant General (Retired) Guy Thibault, former Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, Canadian Armed Forces. This edited volume, the second volume in this collection, provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary debates and issues in Canadian defence policy studies. The contributors examine topics including sexual misconduct and the crisis of defence culture, personnel retention in the CAF, the impacts of climate change, NORAD modernization, policy trade-offs in the wake of the war in Ukraine, defence spending, procurement, as well as the defence policy making process. Thomas Juneau is Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa, Canada. Philippe Lagassé is Associate Professor and Barton Chair in the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University, Canada. .

Abstract: This edited volume discusses infrastructural cooperation and industrial cooperation between China and several countries in Africa. In contributions by academics and practitioners alike, the book distils the conceptual implications of empirical and ethnographic findings and explores probable future developments in the Africa-China relationship. The chapters deal with numerous countries across the African continent, covering nearly all regions, showcasing the dynamics of China’s relations with different countries while highlighting African agency over major infrastructure projects and industrial activity. Providing an in-depth look at the evolving economic cooperation across these two regions, this volume will appeal to researchers and students of African politics, international relations, area studies, and comparative politics. The book will be of relevance to policymakers in governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations involved in policy formulation particularly regarding the Africa-China/China-Africa relationship.

Abstract: “This book is a goldmine for scholars and practitioners eager to understand and contribute to global cooperation. An audacious and looking-forward exercise that boosts determination and creativity.” —Valérie Rosoux, Professor – Director of Research, FNRS and University of Louvain, Belgium “Although multilateral institutions seem to be in crisis, the editors of this important volume argue that they are ‘more resilient, more reactive, and more effective than usually thought.’ A must-read for anyone interested in contemporary international relations.” —Lise Howard, Professor of Government and Foreign Service, Georgetown University, USA “This important boocoverk shows that crisis is constitutive of multilateralism. As its rich case studies illustrate, disagreement, struggle and conflict form its normal conditions.” —Vincent Pouliot, James McGill Professor, McGill University, Canada This book explores the challenges that multilateralism faces and questions the idea of a ‘crisis’ of multilateral cooperation and international organizations. It examines recent pressures on and power shifts in multilateralism such as the war in Syria, the Covid-19 pandemic, challenges for NATO, the erosion of multilateral norms, the Trump-Biden transition, the rise of China, the post-Brexit European Union, and the mobilization of countries from the South. The book also illustrates the resilience of multilateralism and some lessons learned from the WTO, UN Women, IO Secretariats or global environmental governance. It argues that ‘crisis’ should not be considered a pathology but the ‘matrix’ of multilateralism. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of IR, global governance, and international organizations. Abstract: In this book, "Asian Organized Crime and the Anglosphere," the author uncovers the multifaceted phenomenon of Asian Organized Crime (AOC) and its profound impact on nation-states, with particular emphasis on English-speaking countries. From the United States and Canada, to the United Kingdom, to Australia and New Zealand; each chapter delves into the intricate dynamics and transnational operations of Asian criminal groups. The book explores the diverse responses and strategies employed by these countries, shedding light on the categories of AOC, ranging from traditional criminal activities rooted in Asian countries to high-tech transnational crimes that have rapidly expanded into Western nations. Readers will gain insights into the presence and impact of prominent Asian criminal groups operating within the Anglosphere. Focusing on national and homeland security implications, this book equips professionals, students, practitioners, and academics with the knowledge to understand, counter, and combat Asian organized crime.

Abstract: “Alliances are commonly conceived as tools that major powers use to control weaker partners. From this perspective, then, whether alliances endure or collapse depends on the patron’s will. Andrea Leva challenges this view: while acknowledging the implications of power asymmetry in inter-allied management, the author argues that junior allies may have a critical role in bringing the alliance to an end. Through an elegant five-case comparison, Leva uncovers the mechanisms at play in junior allies’ relations with major partners. By shedding light on a previously underscored phenomenon, this book is an important contribution to the theoretical literature on alliances.” —Andrea Locatelli, Associate Professor, Università Cattolica, Milan (Italy) “In a well-argued book, Andrea Leva sheds light on an overlooked area of alliance theory. Contrary to the realist and institutionalist arguments, Leva suggests that junior allies’ quest for autonomy and voice opportunity can critically affect their security relationship with the patron, even affecting the alliance’s persistence or termination. The book’s model is then applied to several interesting case studies. A must-read for those interested in questioning a simplistic view of asymmetric alliances.” —Andrea Carati, Associate Professor, Università degli Studi, Milan (Italy) Military alliances are a constant feature in international politics, and a better understanding of them can directly impact world affairs. This book examines why alliances endure or collapse. As a distinctive feature, it analyses asymmetric alliances focusing on the junior allies’ decision to continue or terminate a military agreement. It deepens our knowledge of alliance cohesion and erosion, investigating the relevance of the weaker side’s preferences and behavior in alliance politics. The author examines the literature on alliance persistence and termination and puts forward a theoretical model that helps interpret historical and contemporary cases in a way that is useful for expert researchers and non-expert readers alike. Andrea Leva received a Ph.D. from Università degli Studi di Milano Statale, Milan (Italy). He is a Policy Officer of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, working on European Affairs.

Abstract: The book establishes a linkage between perceptions and foreign policy by exploring, how China’s behavior towards Japan is driven by mental shortcuts. The study is focused on the aspect of historical memories and how it factors in China’s Japan Policy. It explores the linkage between perceptions born from the past, their interpretations in the present and thereby, the shaping of policy behavior of China towards Japan. The author delves beyond the realist and liberal interpretations of international politics, which assume that states’ interests and material capabilities are a ‘given’ in the international system- thus, offering a conceptual understanding of Sino-Japanese relations in the twenty-first century. Abstract: Im Straf- und Maßregelvollzug leben zunehmend lebensältere Menschen. Abstract: This edited collection explores the intersections of populist communication, performative leadership and international politics. It investigates the mechanisms and dynamics connecting these core conceptual fi elds and offers empirical examples. Together, the contributors to the volume argue that populist communication, i.e. the language, deliberation and discursive performance of populist ideas, has a profound and lasting impact not only on domestic politics, but in terms of foreign policies as well as the conduct of international politics writ large. First, populist communication shapes how global, regional and transborder issues are debated and strategically used for political purposes domestically. Second, populist communication changes when and how states and other actors in turn formulate responses and policies vis-a-vis, for example, migration, global health, climate change, trade, or war. Finally, populist communication affects the nature of international politics. It infl uences how actors conduct themselves internationally, and how we may conceive of core concepts and practices such as diplomacy, security, cooperation, and order. To illustrate these mechanisms, the contributors explore cases from around the world, demonstrating the relevance of populist communication for international politics in both the Global South and the Global North. Abstract: This book follows the author's 22-year journey through Cyprus and surrounding countries beyond in an exploration of conflict resolution with regard to the Cyprus Problem. The struggle is emblematic of numerous international attempts over the years to resolve this identity-based ethnic conflict historically referred to as the Cyprus Problem. So far all have failed miserably. The current situation indicates any solution other than a formal partition of the island between the two communities seems increasingly remote as the years pass. This has led the author to conclude a resolution to the Cyprus Problem no longer is a realistic political goal, but rather one eclipsed by the need for a non-political solution, which at least may succeed in convincing people on both sides to live together peacefully for their joint benefit. Abstract: Foreign policy is one of the most complex policies of every state, and Portugal and Iceland are no exception. The “Small States and Big Powers: Portugal and Iceland’s Foreign Relations” book analyses the importance of relations with big powers or regional and international organisations from a shelter theory perspective, detailing the degree of political, economic and societal shelter that they have provided to Portugal and to Iceland over time. Despite having followed distinct paths, Portugal and Iceland have some important similarities in their foreign policy, namely in relation to the European and the Atlantic dimensions and their participation in regional organisations. The book examines their decisions to join or not to join regional organisations, and both countries’ bilateral relations with other important parts of the world, namely Africa, the Nordic states and China. This book compares the foreign policies of Portugal and Iceland considering their commonly identified status as small states and place them within the shelter theory framework, and its findings indicate that both countries need to balance their international relations with shelter provided by different actors. Their size and political and economic capabilities matter in their bilateral and multilateral relations. It is therefore in both countries’ interest to maintain strong cooperation not only with big powers, but also regional and international organisations, depending on their field of action, in order to flourish politically, economically and socially.

Abstract: This book explores collaborations between the European Union (EU) and the CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) in science diplomacy, as well as the related areas of cyberdiplomacy and techplomacy. It focuses on how interregional collaboration could strengthen societal resilience in both LAC and EU member countries and contribute to realising the SDGs and Agenda 2030 objectives. The book explores the history of EU relations with LAC, and provides a conceptual basis for science diplomacy, including cyberdiplomacy and techplomacy, in the context of international relations and diplomacy studies. It highlights how COVID-19 has accelerated pre-existing trends in diplomacy in EU and LAC, forcing diplomats online and making them confront scientific and technical issues as core parts of foreign policy agendas and future pandemic preparedness. The book also examines the role of science diplomacy between these regions in relation to the climate change debate and reflects on whether the EU-LAC collaboration in science and R&D can be taken to a policy level. It provides suggestions on ways in which the CELAC and the EU could collaborate, both in promoting a rule-based cyberspace and in strengthening digital resilience; and situates this collaboration in the broader geopolitical, scientific and technological environments. Authored by experts in this field, this highly topical book is of interest to a wide readership interested in diplomacy studies, public policy, international relations, regionalism, and S&T studies.

Abstract: The purpose of this book is to project diplomacy as an unavoidable instrument for monitoring, prevention and control of health and disaster risks among African countries. The book advocates health cooperation in Africa at a time when pandemics are recurrent. Outside of the WHO, many countries, even within regional groupings have not actively pursued health cooperation. We intend this book to provide the basis for advocating the inclusion of health diplomacy in the curricula of the training of the African diplomat with the hope to stimulate gradual policy shifts in foreign ministries, regional groupings, and the African Union. Humphrey Ngala Ndi is Cultural Counsellor at the High Commission of Cameroon in London. He is also professor of health geography at the University of Yaounde I, Cameroon. He holds an MSc degree in Diplomacy, Foreign Policy, and Statecraft from Loughborough University. Humphrey has many articles in peer-review journals to his credit. Henry Ngenyam Bang is a disaster management scholar, educator and practitioner with extensive research, publication, and higher education teaching experience. He teaches courses in Disaster and Emergency Management at Coventry University, UK. Henry holds two Master of Science degrees (Applied Geology & Environment and Development) and a PhD in International Development from the University of East Anglia UK. His interdisciplinary research interest bisects crises/disaster management and diplomacy/foreign policy. Zebulon Suifon Takwa serves as senior Peace and Development Advisor (PDA) for Zimbabwe. In this role, he provides regular strategic analytical support to the UN Resident Coordinator and supports the UN Country Team in its programmatic engagement with national stakeholders in relation to conflict prevention, peacebuilding, social cohesion, and democratic governance. Anna B Mbur Tasha is Minister Counsellor at the Cameroon High Commission in London. Anna graduated with History and English from Bayero University Kano in 1989 and proceeded to study diplomacy and international relations at the International Relations Institute of Cameroon. For over 30 years, she served in several senior positions in Cameroon’s foreign ministry before being posted to London. She has expertise in development, peace, and conflict management. .

Abstract: In many countries, censorship, blocking of internet access and internet content for political purposes are still part of everyday life. Will filtering, blocking, and hacking replace scissors and black ink? This book argues that only a broader understanding of censorship can effectively protect freedom of expression. For centuries, church and state controlled the content available to the public through political, moral and religious censorship. As technology evolved, the legal and political tools were refined, but the classic censorship system continued until the end of the 20th century. However, the myth of total freedom of communication and a law-free space that had been expected with the advent of the internet was soon challenged. The new rulers of the digital world, tech companies, emerged and gained enormous power over free speech and content management. All this happened alongside cautious regulation attempts on the part of various states, either by granting platforms near-total immunity (US) or by setting up new rules that were not fully developed (EU). China has established the Great Firewall and the Golden Shield as a third way. In the book, particular attention is paid to developments since the 2010s, when Internet-related problems began to multiply. The state’s solutions have mostly pointed in one direction: towards greater control of platforms and the content they host. Similarities can be found in the US debates, the Chinese and Russian positions on internet sovereignty, and the new European digital regulations (DSA-DMA). The book addresses them all. This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand the complexities of social media’s content regulation and moderation practices. It makes a valuable contribution to the field of freedom of expression and the internet, showing that, with different kinds of censorship, this essentially free form of communication has come – almost by default – under legal regulation and the original freedom may have been lost in too many countries in recent years.

Abstract: This book examines Canada’s foreign policy in terms of China, pointing to the flaws and attitudes relating to the impracticality and lack of its pragmatic design. We examine the historical and contemporary problem which these states face in terms of their economic, political, and social differentials to see what they have in common, what separates them, and how and why they can overcome these political and social divisions. Our aim is to provide solution-based strategies to the very substantial, diplomatic, and foreign policy dilemmas which exist between these two countries. We begin with an overview and analysis of the fraught diplomatic and economic relations between Canada and China, particularly exacerbated during the global pandemic. Secondly, we look at these problems and how they might be resolved through developing a human security lens, in particular the idea of what we call a ‘human security diplomacy’ framework which we believe can advocate and support Canadian values while offering a strategic tool for strengthening national interests in the short and long term. Abstract: Examining the EU's promotion of human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans+ and intersex (LGBTI) persons in Uganda during the period of 2009 to 2017, this book investigates how a public administration defines and deals with a wicked problem. The empirical puzzle of how the topic of human rights for LGBTI persons, despite its highly contested nature, travelled between Brussels and Kampala, became codified in form of LGBTI Guidelines (2013) and institutionalized within EU foreign policy is addressed as one of translation and sensemaking. The investigation focuses on the process of problem definition in everyday practice by EU staff and EU member states’ staff in Brussels and Kampala. This book therefore provides key insights into how public administrations deal with wicked problems, how contested ideas can become institutionalized and how an idea is translated and made sense of across time, levels and cultural boundaries. The findings are of interest to scholars of wicked problems, sociological new institutionalism and public administration as well as international relations and EU studies, human rights, gender and sexuality studies. Lydia Malmedie has an interdisciplinary background in political science, human rights, media and comparative literature and organizational sociology. Lydia has published on topics such as sexual orientation and gender, nondiscrimination, EU policies, and advocacy in social work. Abstract: The book deals with the effective operation of the rules related to biomedical research and pays attention to the activities of the national legislatures of the 27 Member States in the field of scientific research. This multilevel system has an impact on biobanking activity. The book answers questions realized by operators on the main biobanks around the EU in the field of GDPR. The authors and editors used the questions born from brainstorming among members of the Association European, Middle East & Africa for Biopreservation and Biobanking (ESBB) to offer to the operators in biobanking activity and researchers quickly answer to their daily questions, but with authors highest quality. Further the book provides a comprehensive review of the rapidly expanding field of biobanking. It provides researchers and scholars working on biobanking and bio-sharing and more in general in the university hospitals and clinical trial consortiums, and companies, biomedical researchers, but also jurists and the professionals (in particular judges, lawyers, officers) an instrument rigorous but easy to use of the GDPR in the case of biobanking activities. The book identifies a methodological path to tackle the legal or ethical problem on a specific scientific-technological to verify existing solutions and give ideas for future applications. The importance of the legal solution influences the implementation of the development of the biobanking activity service itself.

Abstract: The Aarhus Convention on access to information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters has been celebrated as a pioneering international environmental agreement. Given that a quarter-century has passed since Aarhus was opened for signature, now is an opportune moment to revisit it from a fresh perspective. Marking this anniversary, this book explores Aarhus from the vista of the English School of International Relations, an ethically-minded perspective used to gauge the prevalence of state-oriented and human-oriented progress from the Convention's rationales and realities. It firstly considers Aarhus' propagation, investigating the legal, diplomatic and geopolitical contexts enabling its emergence. It secondly investigates Aarhus' germination, with reference to its trinity of procedural rights. Thirdly, the book examines the Convention's growth, in terms of the development of its organisational infrastructure. The chief finding is that Aarhus demonstrates, in environmental contexts, the feasibility and benefit of fostering 'humankind' solidarist progress, rooted in moral cosmopolitanism, within the existing power arrangements of a sovereignty-based pluralism. Pluralist concerns for diversity and international order are found to be a precondition for more ethically ambitious solidarist endeavours. These observations reinforce the logic of solidarisation, an English School innovation that presents sovereignty as (a) being ethically matured by solidarism whilst (b) delimiting solidarism within the threshold of states' tolerance. Abstract: Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) inspiriert und polarisiert.

Abstract: This is the first comprehensive English-language overview of competition law enforcement in Switzerland since the introduction of direct sanctions in 2004. It discusses the key issues facing practitioners: horizontal and vertical agreements (with a particular emphasis on distribution agreements), abuse of dominance, and the newly introduced provisions on relative market power and merger control. It also provides an overview of the key procedural provisions, leniency and amicable settlements, and fines. The book subsequently analyses the main differences between Swiss and EU competition law and explains why, to what extent, and how companies should conduct a separate analysis under Swiss law. It offers a comprehensive overview and accessible analysis, based on in-depth research of case law, for practitioners and in-house counsels who need to ensure compliance with competition law on a Swiss, European or international basis. It is also a valuable guide for all practitioners, academics and students interested in understanding Swiss competition law. Enforcement of competition law in Switzerland has intensified and is becoming increasingly important for global companies selling in Switzerland. Moreover, the fines have increased over the last twenty years, and many foreign companies have had to pay substantial fines in recent years. Lastly, the Swiss Federal Supreme Court has now extended the extraterritorial application of Swiss competition law to foreign companies where sales to Switzerland are possible.

Abstract: “Theoretically informed and enriched by fieldwork, this book sheds light on the sometimes-murky depths of Chinese infrastructure engagement in Africa. Using Tanzania and Zambia to ground the research, Zajontz highlights the African state strategies that shaped disparate outcomes. This perceptive analysis has global implications. It will be a useful resource for scholars and policymakers trying to understand the expansion of Chinese capital across Africa, and beyond.” --Deborah Brautigam, Bernard L. Schwartz Professor of International Political Economy Emerita, Johns Hopkins University “This is one of the first studies to develop an innovative, synthetic and overarching theoretical framework to understand the Belt and Road Initiative’s operation. It demonstrates its applicability through detailed, definitive and defining empirical research. This is vital reading to understand China’s current and ongoing impacts in Africa.” --Pádraig Carmody, Professor in Geography, Trinity College Dublin “This book is a welcome addition to the China-Africa field. Empirically detailed and rich, its real strength lies in its theoretical sophistication and valuable engagement with the notion of Africa’s agency in relations with China. A compelling analysis of China’s evolving role in Africa’s infrastructure economy, the book is sure to be a landmark text in the field.” --Scarlett Cornelissen, Professor in Political Science, Stellenbosch University This book sheds light on structural drivers that led to the Chinese omnipresence in African infrastructure markets and offers a strategic-relational approach to the study of African agency in Sino-African infrastructure encounters. Case studies cover the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), Zambia’s road sector as well as Tanzania’s Bagamoyo port and Standard Gauge Railway. It is shown that African (state) agency in the infrastructure sector is contingent upon dynamic state-society relations and distinct political-economic contexts and constraints. The book problematises contradictions related to infrastructure debt, the emergence of Sino-African public-private partnerships and the intensifying geopolitics-cum-geoeconomics of infrastructure across Africa. Tim Zajontz is Lecturer in Global Political Economy at the University of Freiburg, Research Fellow in the Centre for International and Comparative Politics at Stellenbosch University and Research Associate in the Second Cold War Observatory.

Abstract: In this edited volume, renowned scholars from around the globe rethink and update important political communication concepts in the light of the most recent changes that have been occurring in media environments. In particular, the authors discuss those caused by the use of social media in politics, e.g. prevalent disinformation, populism, political polarization, etc. This collection of key texts addresses the major concerns that arise in our rapidly changing media and political environments and provides a basis for discussions on the current state of political communication research. This makes this volume a must-read for students, researchers, and scholars of political communication, interested in a better understanding of key concepts and the current state of the research in the field. .

Abstract: This book offers case studies and a comparative analysis of three authors writing in different European minority languages, exploring how they link national and context-marked political community with universal human requirements. The author examines their left-wing positions and how their writing speaks to the acceptance of difference as a necessary condition of such universal values. He presents, for the first time in English, an in-depth treatment of the writing of the Basque poet, novelist and essayist Joseba Sarrionandia (1958–) and the Catalan priest and civil disobedience author and activist Lluís Maria Xirinacs (1932–2007), whilst linking their understanding of a 'foundational universalism' with the work of Irish novelist, short-story writer and language activist Máirtín Ó Cadhain (1906–1970). The book is by its nature interdisciplinary in order to engage in a thoroughgoing comparative analysis of European language minorities, and responds empirically and theoretically to calls made recently in this regard from within critical Iberian Studies. It will therefore be of interest to students and scholars of fields such as Iberian and Celtic studies, International Relations theory, literary criticism, nationalism studies, political philosophy, as well as socio-legal and critical terrorism studies. Patrick Carlin is an Associate Researcher at the Language, Policy and Planning Research Unit, School of Welsh, Cardiff University, UK. He has published research in the field of minority language sociolinguistics, language and regulation.

Abstract: This book offers a nuanced, realistic, thought-provoking, and rich menu of ideas for addressing epistemic racism and disrupting oppressive structures of knowledge creation and mobilization. —Thomas Kwasi Tieku, King’s University College, University of Western Ontario, Canada. The theme and collection constitute a timely and an impressive cutting-edge contribution to both the theorizing and praxis of epistemic agency. —N’Dri T. Assié-Lumumba, Cornell University, USA. This book makes a vigorous contribution to the struggle for epistemic decolonisation from Eurocentrism. It is daring yet still accessible. Read this book and learn! It’s a gift to us. —Leon Moosavi, University of Liverpool, UK Despite the long history of decolonization as a ‘third world’ political project, decolonization as an intellectual project has gained tremendous momentum in recent times, signalled by movements such as #RhodesMustFall, #BlackInTheIvory, and Why Is My Curricula So White among others. These movements situate the coloniality of power within ongoing practices in academia and seek to disrupt systemic racism and oppressive structures of knowledge production and dissemination. Assembling critical perspectives of scholars engaged in African Studies and other cognate disciplines on the continent and in the diaspora, the book elucidates and fuses ideas together to produce nuanced pedagogical advances in the service of students, academics, and educators. It contributes ideas on how to navigate systems, curricula, and academic contexts that have perpetuated a colonial toxicity that undermines Black agency and epistemic justice. This book will be of interest to students, researchers, educational leaders and policy makers across diverse disciplines interested in championing a decolonial praxis in academic spaces and universities. Abstract: This book explores how endangered local interpreters in Afghanistan were seen through Western eyes in the period from 2014, when the West drew down the bulk of its military forces, to the summer of 2021, when NATO forces withdrew completely. The author examines how these interpreters were understood and represented by Western governments, militaries, agencies, press and lobby organisations, how the understandings changed over time, and to what extent the representations reflect distinct rationales for intervention/historic relationships with Afghanistan, specific immigration and anti-terrorism policies, and notions of citizenship. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of translation and interpreting, history, war studies, and migration studies. Abstract: “With contributions by leading scholars and practitioners from around the world, this collection represents the best single resource for anyone looking to get more out of bringing together teaching and research.” – Simon Usherwood, The Open University, UK “An essential resource filled with new ideas and approaches, this will become the go-to volume for political science instructors eager to find efficient, productive, and fun ways to combine their teaching and research interests.” – Amanda Rosen, Webster University, US “This book is an excellent contribution to the field of political science pedagogy. Given the constant challenge that professors face to do quality research and quality teaching, this book is a very useful resource for academics to better focus on the importance of research into effective pedagogy and how this research can be helpful to the professor and their students.” – Victor Asal, University of Albany, US This book provides a resource for political science faculty wanting to increase their research productivity and/or teaching effectiveness in a time and resource efficient way. Faculty from various subfields and institution types offer examples of how they align their research and teaching activities to “get more bang for their buck.” While some contributors discuss projects within the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research tradition, others go beyond this approach and integrate their teaching and research in other ways. As a result, this volume offers diverse, innovative, and practical ways faculty can leverage the teaching/scholarship connection to both improve scholarly productivity and ground political science instruction in pedagogical literature. Abstract: This book traces how Gottfried Feder and Fritz Todt made technology essential to the Nazi ‘world view’. They groomed engineers with a racist technical ideology that prepared them to later supervise slave labor and the Holocaust. Their concepts evolved from völkisch technocracy to an idealized harmony of man, machine and nature, and were eclipsed by Albert Speer’s total war. Partially due to willing ‘self-coordination’ from engineers, they gained political control over the engineering profession. Destined to be pillars of the Volksgemeinschaft, engineers were indoctrinated with Nazi principles of Aryan superiority at the Reich School of Technology, the Plassenburg. Nazi propaganda announced a bright future through technology, furthering a sense of normalcy in Germany, despite the ruthless exclusion of those unwanted. John C. Guse studied at universities in Wisconsin, Nebraska, and at Bonn, Germany. He was a Director at the American School of Paris and inspecteur délégué for the French International Baccalaureat. His publications concern Fritz Todt, propaganda for Nazi technology, and a ‘forgotten’ internment camp in France.
