Starting with the Origins of Goth, Tolhurst explores early art and literature that inspired the genre and looks into the work of T.S Eliot, Edgar Allan Poe, Sylvia Plath , Albert Camus and more. He also outlines the path of Gothic Forebears and shows how many musicians played in punk bands before transitioning into goth endeavors. Abstract: "Citizenship is a fantasy of political community without others. How is it faring in today's world of authoritarianism, failed states, and climate crisis? In a world where democratic experiment is, by now, a networked and global proposition? What might we learn from music - and from ethnomusicology? The relationship between the idea of citizenship and music is long-standing, but it has not yet been looked at from a perspective informed by postcolonialism and today's decolonizing debates. The case studies in this volume are, consequently, drawn from across Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Its first chapter locates the current ethnomusicological interest in citizenship in broad critical landscape, focusing on approaches to audience, media, voice and performance. The second surveys a growing body of recent ethnomusicological literature on citizenship, theorized in terms of identity, technocracy, and intimacy. The third comprises case studies developing an approach to citizenship and political subjectivity beyond conventional liberal categories, defined by mobility ('the citizen on his bike'), collectivity ('the citizen in the crowd') and activism ('the citizen in the square'). The conclusion offers an argument about the implications for citizenship studies of today's thinking in ethnomusicology, musicology and sound studies, reflecting on the hardening rhetoric of political belonging in Europe."

Abstract: Anfang der 1920er Jahre erreichte Jazzmusik Europa und verbreitete sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit durch Hörensagen, amerikanische Musikerinnen und Musiker und später auch Schallplatten in Deutschland. Die Musik wirbelte das kulturelle Leben und seine Diskurse in einem Maße auf, dass die kulturelle Elite um den Fortbestand der europäischen musikalischen Traditionen bangte: Jazz wurde einerseits vehement abgelehnt und andererseits euphorisch begrüßt und als Ausdruck von Freiheit verstanden.Dieser "Jazzaufprall" in den Jahren zwischen 1924 und 1929 wird in der Studie anhand von zeitgenössischen Betrachtungen beleuchtet: Was passierte mit den unterschiedlichen Dimensionen des Stadtlebens? Wie wurden die fremde Kultur und die Musik in die bestehenden kulturellen Szenen eingeordnet? Und inwiefern konstruierten sich in Berlin durch diesen internationalen Einfluss neue Facetten einer urbanen Identität?

Jahrhundert. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt dabei auf der Musik der Gruppen Runrig und Capercaillie, die, eingebettet in die soziokulturellen und kulturpolitischen Veränderungen der „Gaelic Renaissance“ in den 1970er Jahren, begannen, unter Einfluss angloamerikanischer populärer Musikstile eigene, hybride musikalische Ausdrucksformen zu kreieren.〈ger〉

Abstract: The present work describes and analyses the causes and the course of the revival of Gaelic traditional music in Scotland in the 20th century, in particular using the musicological and cultural theoretical models by Tamara Livingston and Owe Ronström. The work focuses on the music of the groups Runrig and Capercaillie, both of which, embedded in the sociocultural and cultural-political changes of the “Gaelic Renaissance” in the 1970s and under the influence of Anglo-American popular musical styles, began to create their own hybrid musical forms of expression.〈eng〉

Abstract: "Ralph Ellison famously characterized ensemble jazz improvisation as "antagonistic cooperation." Both collaborative and competitive, musicians play with and against one another to create art and community. In Antagonistic Cooperation, Robert G. O'Meally shows how this idea runs throughout twentieth-century African American culture to provide a new history of Black creativity and aesthetics. From the collages of Romare Bearden and paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat to the fiction of Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, O'Meally explores how the worlds of African American jazz, art, and literature have informed one another. He argues that these artists drew on the improvisatory nature of jazz and the techniques of collage not as a way to depict a fractured or broken sense of Blackness but rather to see the Black self as beautifully layered and complex. They developed a shared set of methods and motives driven by the belief that art must involve a sense of community. O'Meally's readings of these artists and their work emphasize how they have not only contributed to understanding of Black history and culture but also provided hope for fulfilling the broken promises of American democracy"--

Abstract: Kurt Reinhard ist einer der bedeutendsten Musikwissenschaftler und Ethnomusikologen, der die Notwendigkeit der transkulturellen Kommunikation frühzeitig erkannte und sich zusammen mit seiner Frau Ursula Reinhard tatkräftig für deren Verwirklichung einsetzte. Beide Leben belegen eindrucksvoll diesen Einsatz. Musikologische Feldforschungen in der Türkei (1955-1993) bildeten die Grundlage einer umfangreichen Sammlung von Quellenmaterialien zur Türkei. Darauf aufbauend entstanden einschlägige systematische und ethnomusikologische Studien, unter anderem zu Musikinstrumenten, zu âşık-Liedern, zur Roma-Musik, zur Geschichte der türkischen Volks- und Kunstmusik. Neben den Grundlagenforschungen und einschlägigen Studien war das Forscher-Ehepaar zugleich bestrebt, den deutsch-türkischen Kulturdialog zu fördern und die transkulturelle Verständigung zu verbessern. Der vorliegende Band bezweckt, das ethnomusikologische Wirken, die Lebensläufe und Bibliographien des Ehepaares Reinhard möglichst umfassend zu dokumentieren und die Verdienste um eine über fünfzigjährige Wirkungs- und Entwicklungsgeschichte, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zur Jahrhundertwende, im Kontext der Vergleichenden Musikwissenschaft zu würdigen.

Abstract: "How can music withstand the death and destruction brought on by war? Global conflicts of the 20th century fundamentally transformed not only national boundaries, power relations, and global economies, but also the arts and culture of every nation involved. An important, unacknowledged aspect of these conflicts is that they have unique musical soundtracks. Music in World War II explores how music and sound took on radically different dimensions in the United States and Europe before, during, and after World War II. Additionally, the collection examines the impact of radio and film as the disseminators of the war's musical soundtrack. Contributors contend that the European and American soundtrack of World War II was largely one of escapism rather than the lofty, solemn, heroic, and celebratory mode of "war music" in the past. Furthermore, they explore the variety of experiences of populations forced from their homes and interned in civilian and POW camps in Europe and the United States, examining how music in these environments played a crucial role in maintaining ties to an idealized "home" and constructing politicized notions of national and ethnic identity. This fascinating and well-constructed volume of essays builds understanding of the role and importance of music during periods of conflict and highlights the unique aspects of music during World War II"--

Abstract: "The modern discipline of musicology has its roots in early-twentieth-century Germany and in three seemingly distinct but surprisingly connected areas of musical activity: the discovery of Medieval music and music theory through the all-consuming unearthing and decoding of documents; the tremendous growth of youth movements devoted to collective singing and music-making and the study of Medieval music; and the exportation of this music to Protestant and Catholic missions in German East Africa, where it was widely taught and performed. Underlying these activities was the belief that Medieval music, its structure and soundworld, had affinities with the music of "primitive" societies, such as those the missionaries encountered in East Africa. Rejected outright by African musicians and scholars at the time, the belief was kept alive in the European musicological community through the first half of the twentieth century. Anna Maria Busse Berger draws this all together for the first time, anchoring her writing in extensive archival research and her personal experience as the daughter of a German Lutheran missionary in East Africa. The result is a momentous re-thinking of the early history of music scholarship as well as a novel understanding of the imperial and colonial projects that shaped Germany's perception of itself at a crucial time in its history"--

Abstract: Reiseberichten eilt in der Musikforschung ein ambivalenter Ruf voraus: Mitunter kategorisch abgelehnt als ernst zu nehmende Quellen, bergen sie gleichwohl häufig einzigartige Informationen zur musikalischen Geschichte von Ethnien und Ländern. Darüber hinaus erweisen sie sich als wertvolle mentalitätsgeschichtliche Dokumente ihrer Autor_innen. Hans-Jakob Zimmer unternimmt die bislang umfangreichste Auswertung deutschsprachiger Reiseberichte im Hinblick auf das Musikleben des Landes Brasilien, welches nach der Umsiedlung des portugiesischen Königshofs nach Rio de Janeiro im Jahr 1808 zu einem Sehnsuchtsort für Naturforscher, Reisende und Auswanderer avancierte.

Abstract: Musik berührt den Geist, den Körper und die Seele gleichermassen. Welche Formen der durch Musik vermittelten interkulturellen und interreligiösen Begegnung lassen sich unterscheiden? Kommt dabei spezifisch religiöse Musik zum Einsatz oder wird diese gerade vermieden? Wie lässt sich Musik als religiös qualifizieren? Was bedeutet «Verständigung» in diesem Zusammenhang?

Abstract: Wie lassen sich Musik und Körper aufeinander beziehen? Dieser Band stellt das musikbezogene Erleben und Verstehen erstmals als ein grundlegendes bzw. übergeordnetes Phänomen in unterschiedlichen körperbezogenen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen heraus.
