Abstract: "Almost immediately after jazz became popular nationally in the United States in the early 20th century, American writers responded to what this exciting art form signified for listeners. This book takes an expansive view of the relationship between this uniquely American music and other aspects of American life, including books, films, language, and politics. Observing how jazz has become a cultural institution, widely celebrated as 'America's classical music,' the book also never loses sight of its beginnings in Black expressive culture and its enduring ability to critique problems of democracy or speak back to violence and inequality, from Jim Crow to George Floyd. Taking the reader through time and across expressive forms, this volume traces jazz as an aesthetic influence, a political force, and a representational focus in American literature and culture. It shows how Jazz has long been a rich source of aesthetic stimulation, influencing writers as stylistically wide-ranging as Langston Hughes, Eudora Welty, and James Baldwin, or artists as diverse as Aaron Douglas, Jackson Pollock, and Gordon Parks."

Abstract: "From athletes praising God to pastors using sport metaphors in the pulpit - the association between sport and religion is often considered incidental. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled. Abstract: Fast alles, was im Jazz heute als gut und vermittelbar gilt, wurde in den Sechzigerjahren des 20. Jahrhunderts entwickelt und ausgeformt. Miles Davis begann modal zu improvisieren. Coltrane, Coleman, Brötzmann & Co ergänzten ihre Tonalität durch die Kakophonie der Geräusche. Rhythmusgruppen verabschiedeten sich vom durchlaufenden, swingenden Beat, doch die Swing-Bigbands waren durchaus noch nicht abgemeldet. Hard Bop und die American Folk Blues Festivals eröffneten der Black Music neue Spielräume: Funk und Soul. Jazzmusiker integrierten Rock, Rockmusiker adaptierten Jazz. Die Sixties waren für den Jazz ein Jahrzehnt der Umbrüche und Widersprüche, aber auch eine Zeit des florierenden Diskurses. Im »jazz-echo«, der achtseitigen Jazz-Beilage des GONDEL-Magazins, beschrieben und bewerteten sechs fachkundige Publizisten aus drei Generationen begeistert, skeptisch oder polemisch die rasanten künstlerischen Entwicklungen. Redakteur und Hauptautor des »jazz-echo« war in den 1960er Jahren Siegfried Schmidt-Joos. Auch seine Entwicklung vom ausschließlichen Jazz-Experten zum weiträumigen Pop-Journalisten und Rock-Chronisten spiegelt dieses Buch, das mit kritisch-kulinarischen Kostbarkeiten die Zeit des florierenden Diskurses in der Musik wie in der Musikberichterstattung in Erinnerung ruft.

Abstract: "Music is typically encountered as a cultural surface. Songs emanate instantaneously and almost magically from our computers and phones. Tools for playing and making music, such as recordings and guitars, wait for us in stores, ready for purchase with no assembly required. And when we're done with this stuff, we can kick it to the curb, where it disappears effortlessly and without a trace. Day-to-day musical enjoyment seems so simple, so easy, so automatic. But it isn't. This book digs beneath such surface-level encounters to reveal the infrastructural dimensions of music and listening. It takes nothing for granted about the manufacture, delivery, or disposal of music's material and human bases. These infrastructural phenomena encompass the interrelated material, organizational, and ideological systems that facilitate three main phases in the social life and social death of musical commodities: (1) resources and production, (2) circulation and transmission, (3) failure and waste. The book asks how these three phases influence and respond to aesthetic conventions, material-environmental realities, and political-economic conditions in both industrializing and industrialized parts of the world. Although sawmills, mineshafts, power grids, telecoms networks, transport systems, and junk piles may seem peripheral to musical culture, Audible Infrastructures shows that all these humble things and their ordinary people are actually pivotal to what music is, how it works, and why it matters. Undertaking a concerted archaeology of music's media infrastructures is thus a means of understanding society and of knowing ourselves-and it is a step toward the reorientation of our musical cultures"--

Abstract: Tasteninstrumente dienen seit Jahrhunderten nicht nur als Konzertinstrumente, sondern auch als Experimentierwerkzeuge beim Komponieren und als pädagogische Demonstrationsmittel. Zum professionellen Musikstudium gehört daher für die allermeisten Musiker auch eine klavierpraktische Ausbildung. Der Klavierunterricht orientiert sich heute jedoch allzu oft allein am Ideal des Konzertpianisten und zielt vor allem auf das (fehlerfreie) Repertoirespiel. Das noch junge Fach »Angewandtes Klavierspiel« verfolgt dagegen einen ganzheitlichen Ansatz. Es ermöglicht Studierenden, sich am Klavier in diversen Disziplinen weiterzubilden: etwa in stilgebundener Improvisation, Komposition und Arrangement, Partitur- und Blattspiel oder Gehörbildung. Das Fach lebt vom interdisziplinären Dialog – insbesondere zwischen der Klavierpädagogik und Musiktheorie – und erzeugt positive Synergien. Der vorliegende Sammelband präsentiert neueste Erkenntnisse aus Lehre und Forschung zum Thema »Angewandtes Klavierspiel«. Inspiriert von einer Vielzahl von Quellen – von barocken Kontrapunkttraktaten bis zu modernen Jazzklavier-Methoden – werden in den Beiträgen Wege erkundet, Musik an Tasteninstrumenten im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes zu begreifen.

Abstract: "Christians and Christianity have been central to Hip Hop since its inception. This book explores the intersection of Christians and Hip Hop and the multiple outcomes of this intersection. It lays out the ways in which Christians and Hip Hop overlap and diverge. The intersection of Christians and Hip Hop brings together African diasporic cultures, lives, memories and worldviews. Moving beyond the focus on rappers and so-called "Christian Hip Hop," each chapter explores three major themes of the book: identifying Hip Hop, irreconcilable Christianity, and boundaries.There is a self-identified Christian Hip Hop (CHH) community that has received some scholarly attention. At the same time, scholars have analyzed Christianity and Hip Hop without focusing on the self-identified community. This book brings these various conversations together and show, through these three themes, the complexities of the intersection of Christians and Hip Hop. Hip Hop is more than rap music, it is an African diasporic phenomenon. These three themes elucidate the many characteristics of the intersection between Christians and Hip Hop and our reasoning for going beyond "Christian Hip Hop." This collection is a multi-faceted view of how religious belief plays a role in Hip Hoppas' lives and community. Diese Sammelpublikation fragt nach den verschiedenen Erscheinungen von Großformen, analysiert die Phänomene und klärt dabei ihre soziokulturellen Kontexte, die ökonomischen, technologischen Entstehungshintergründe sowie die leitenden Motivationen musikalischen Handelns im 'großen Stil' und seine möglichen ästhetischen Konsequenzen auf. Aufgeteilt in die vier Themenfelder 'Concepts – Cycles – Narrations', 'Cultural (Trans-) Formations', 'Personal Artistry' und 'Audio-Vision and Performance' werden Geschichte und Gestaltung von Konzeptalben, tanz- bzw. clubbasierte Musikumgebungen, individuelle kompositorische Verfahren sowie auf Bühne oder Bildschirm ausgerichtete Erweiterungen des Songformats untersucht.
