    Kurzfassung: How we vary our speech is fundamental in signalling who we are, where we're from and where we're going. How and when does such variation arise? Here, leading experts Jennifer Smith and Mercedes Durham address this question through a sociolinguistic analysis of the speech of preschool children in interaction with their primary caregivers. Bringing together two fields of linguistic research - variationist sociolinguistics and first language acquisition - the study focusses both qualitative and quantitative analysis of a range of variables to show when and how variation is acquired by young children, and the effect the caregiver's interaction has on this process. In doing so, they tackle a fundamental question in language research: when and how do children acquire the highly complex patterns of variation widely attested in adult speech?

    Kurzfassung: A focus on methods can currently be observed in all subfields of linguistics. Rarely, however, is a perspective taken that integrates these individual sub-areas. The book brings together the current discussion of methods and assembles contributions that move along the spectrum of ethnography, mixed methods, and digital humanities and are framed by method(olog)ic reflections that the contributors have undertaken together
    Kurzfassung: In allen Teilbereichen der Linguistik ist derzeit ein Fokus auf Methoden zu beobachten. Selten wird jedoch eine diese einzelnen Teilbereiche integrierende Perspektive auf Methoden und v.a. auch auf Methodologie eingenommen. Der Band unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund den Versuch, die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Methodik der Linguistik, die sich aus den unterschiedlichen Methodeninnovationen der letzten Jahrzehnte ergaben, zu bündeln. Entwicklungen wie die verstärkte Software- und Datenorientierung, die methodische Vielfalt in Projektkooperationen oder der Trend zu ethnographischen Ansätzen werden in einer Reihe methodisch sehr unterschiedlicher Studien reflektiert. Sie haben jedoch alle gemein, dass sie auf ihre Weise traditionelle Grenzen linguistischer Methodik überschreiten; mögen diese intra- oder interdisziplinärer Natur sein. Rahmende Beiträge betten diese Studien in einen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, der für eine methodologische Reintegration der linguistischen Teildisziplinen plädiert. Insofern will der Band ein Anstoß sein. Einen ersten Versuch einer solchermaßen integrierenden Diskussion dokumentiert der Band mit Respondenzen auf dieses Plädoyer einerseits und andererseits mit zwölf zusammenführenden Thesen zur aktuellen Lage der linguistischen Methodendiskussion

    Kurzfassung: In allen Teilbereichen der Linguistik ist derzeit ein Fokus auf Methoden zu beobachten. Selten wird jedoch eine diese einzelnen Teilbereiche integrierende Perspektive auf Methoden und v.a. auch auf Methodologie eingenommen. Der Band unternimmt vor diesem Hintergrund den Versuch, die aktuellen Diskussionen um die Methodik der Linguistik, die sich aus den unterschiedlichen Methodeninnovationen der letzten Jahrzehnte ergaben, zu bündeln. Entwicklungen wie die verstärkte Software- und Datenorientierung, die methodische Vielfalt in Projektkooperationen oder der Trend zu ethnographischen Ansätzen werden in einer Reihe methodisch sehr unterschiedlicher Studien reflektiert. Sie haben jedoch alle gemein, dass sie auf ihre Weise traditionelle Grenzen linguistischer Methodik überschreiten; mögen diese intra- oder interdisziplinärer Natur sein. Rahmende Beiträge betten diese Studien in einen Diskussionszusammenhang ein, der für eine methodologische Reintegration der linguistischen Teildisziplinen plädiert. Insofern will der Band ein Anstoß sein. Einen ersten Versuch einer solchermaßen integrierenden Diskussion dokumentiert der Band mit Respondenzen auf dieses Plädoyer einerseits und andererseits mit zwölf zusammenführenden Thesen zur aktuellen Lage der linguistischen Methodendiskussion. A focus on methods can currently be observed in all subfields of linguistics. Rarely, however, is a perspective taken that integrates these individual sub-areas. The book brings together the current discussion of methods and assembles contributions that move along the spectrum of ethnography, mixed methods, and digital humanities and are framed by method(olog)ic reflections that the contributors have undertaken together

    Kurzfassung: 'New speakers' is a term used to describe those who have learnt a minority language not within their home or community settings, but through bilingual education, immersion or migration. Looking specifically at the impact of new speakers on language policy, this book provides an authoritative and detailed examination of minority language policy in Wales, Scotland, Ireland, the Basque Autonomous Community, Navarre, Catalonia and Galicia. Based on interviews with politicians, senior civil servants, academics and civil society activists, it assesses the extent to which interventions derived from a new speakers' perspective has been incorporated into official language practice.     Kurzfassung: This Element shows how two social movements, lesbian separatism and Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), reflect the changing and complex (anti-)feminist ideologies of their time. The authors outline the historical and political background of those discourses and how they are influencing contemporary gender relations. The materials analysed comprise ten manifestos, which are examined with a combination of data-led discourse analysis and theory-led argumentation analysis. The manifestos are similar in that both sets of authors construct homogenous in-groups and out-groups as well as dichotomies between them. There are some differences though in how this is linguistically realised and who is classified as an out-group. Both groups cast social actors in particular roles and establish ethical norms, but strategic planning and utopias are more prominent among lesbian separatists. Freedom, advantage and authority are central in each group's argumentation, but lesbian separatists also stress humanitarianism while MGTOW focus on financial matters

    Kurzfassung: Wer unsere heutige Medienwirklichkeit verstehen will, kommt nicht umhin, sich mit den Technologien rund um Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) und Algorithmen auseinanderzusetzen. Folgerichtig hat sich in jüngerer Zeit innerhalb der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ein Forschungsstrang entwickelt, der diese Technologien - zumeist aus kritisch-interventionistischer Perspektive - ins Zentrum rückt. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich dagegen "postkritisch" und "bottom-up" den gesellschaftlichen Selbstbeobachtungen im Hinblick auf die KI-Technologien im öffentlichen Diskurs und entwickelt für deren Erforschung das Programm einer Medienkulturrhetorik. Dieses Programm bringt Kulturwissenschaft und Rhetorik zusammen, um die Handlungsmöglichkeiten spätmoderner Subjekte im "KI-Zeitalter" zu ergründen, und wird im Rahmen einer empirischen Fallstudie zur massenmedialen Berichterstattung über KI und der Auseinandersetzung mit ebendieser in den sozialen Medien am Beispiel Facebook erprobt. Anspruch dieser Untersuchung ist es, sowohl einen Beitrag zur Weiterentwicklung kulturwissenschaftlicher Methodologie als auch für ein tieferes Verständnis unserer Kulturen zu leisten und dabei zugleich Anknüpfungspunkte für die (didaktische) Praxis zu bieten.

    Kurzfassung: "This Element explores approaches to locating and examining social identity in corpora with and without the aid of demographic metadata. This is a key concern in corpus-aided studies of language and identity, and this Element sets out to explore the main challenges and affordances associated with either approach and to discern what either approach can (and cannot) show. It describes two case studies which each compare two approaches to social identity variables - sex and age - in a corpus of 14-million words of patient comments about NHS cancer services in England. The first approach utilises demographic tags to group comments according to patients' sex/age while the second involves categorising cases where patients disclose their sex/age in their comments. It begins with a theme-based review of the field with respect to L2 pragmatics learning, teaching, and assessing. The section on pragmatics learning examines studies on learners' pragmatic production and perception, and analyzes research modalities in this field. The section on pragmatics teaching examines the effects of and different approaches to L2 pragmatics instruction; and the section on pragmatics assessing examines the aspects involved in testing learners' pragmatic competence, and studies on issues related to validity and rating in pragmatics assessing. The Element then analyzes studies exploring learners' cognitive processes during pragmatic performance, and case studies are provided to showcase two ongoing projects, one investigating advanced learners' self-praise on social media and the other investigating lingua franca pragmatics among children.     Kurzfassung: This Element explores approaches to locating and examining social identity in corpora with and without the aid of demographic metadata. This is a key concern in corpus-aided studies of language and identity, and this Element sets out to explore the main challenges and affordances associated with either approach and to discern what either approach can (and cannot) show. It describes two case studies which each compare two approaches to social identity variables - sex and age - in a corpus of 14-million words of patient comments about NHS cancer services in England. The first approach utilises demographic tags to group comments according to patients' sex/age while the second involves categorising cases where patients disclose their sex/age in their comments. This Element compares the findings from either approach, with the approaches themselves being critically discussed in terms of their implications for corpus-aided studies of language and identity

    Kurzfassung: Moving beyond two main concepts of 'interlingual' and 'intralingual' discrimination, this Cambridge Element addresses the concept of 'translingual discrimination', which refers to inequality based on transnational migrants' specific linguistic and communicative repertoires that are (il)legitimized by the national order of things. Translingual discrimination adds intensity to transnational processes, with transnational migrants showing two main characteristics of exclusion - 'translingual name discrimination' and its associated elements such as 'name stigma' and 'name microaggression'; and 'translingual English discrimination' and its elements such as 'accentism', 'stereotyping' and 'hallucination'. The accumulation of these characteristics of translingual discrimination causes negative emotionality in its victims, including 'foreign language anxiety' and 'translingual inferiority complexes'. Consequently, transnational migrants adopt coping strategies such as 'CV whitening', 'renaming practices', 'purification', and 'ethnic evasion' while searching for translingual safe spaces

    Kurzfassung: The distinction between humans and the natural world is an artefact and more a matter of linguistic communication than a conceptual separation. This Element proposes ecosemiotics as an epistemological tool to better understand the relationship between human and natural processes. Ecosemiotics with its affinity to the humanities, is presented here as the best disciplinary approach for interpreting complex environmental conditions for a broad audience, across a multitude of temporal and spatial scales. It is proposed as an intellectual bridge between divergent sciences to incorporate within a unique framework different paradigms. The ecosemiotic paradigm helps to explain how organisms interact with their external environments using mechanisms common to all living beings that capture external information and matter for internal usage.     Kurzfassung: Traditional grammar and current theoretical approaches towards modelling grammatical knowledge ignore language in interaction: that is, words such as huh, eh, yup or yessssss. This groundbreaking book addresses this gap by providing the first in-depth overview of approaches towards interactional language across different frameworks and linguistic sub-disciplines. Based on the insights that emerge, a formal framework is developed to discover and compare language in interaction across different languages: the interactional spine hypothesis. Two case-studies are presented: confirmationals (such as eh and huh) and response markers (such as yes and no), both of which show evidence for systematic grammatical knowledge. Assuming that language in interaction is regulated by grammatical knowledge sheds new light on old questions concerning the relation between language and thought and the relation between language and communication. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the relation between language, cognition and social interaction.

    Kurzfassung: Humans may live in the Anthropocene, but this does not affect all in the same way. How would the Anthropocene look if, instead of searching its traces in the geosphere, researchers would look for them in the organosphere, in the ecologies of humans in their entanglements with the environment? Looking at this embodied stratigraphy of power and toxicity, more than the Anthropocene, we will discover the Wasteocene. The imposition of wasting relationships on subaltern human and more-than-human communities implies the construction of toxic ecologies made of contaminating substances and narratives. While official accounts have systematically erased any trace of those wasting relationships, another kind of narrative has been written in flesh, blood, and cells. Traveling between Naples (Italy) and Agbogbloshie (Ghana), science fiction and epidemic outbreaks, this Element will take the readers into the bowels of the Wasteocene, but it will also indicate the commoning practices which are dismantling it

    Kurzfassung: Water is a global resource for modern societies - and water was a global resource for pre-modern societies. The many different water systems serving processes of urbanisation and urban life in ancient times and the Middle Ages have hardly been researched until now. The numerous contributions to this volume pose questions such as what the basic cultural significance of water was, the power of water, in the town and for the town, from different points of view. Symbolic, aesthetic, and cult aspects are taken up, as is the role of water in politics, society, and economy, in daily life, but also in processes of urban planning or in urban neighbourhoods. Not least, the dangers of polluted water or of flooding presented a challenge to urban society. The contributions in this volume draw attention to the complex, manifold relations between water and human beings. This collection presents the results of an international conference in Kiel in 2018. It is directed towards both scholars in ancient and mediaeval studies and all those interested in the diversity of water systems in urban space in ancient and mediaeval times.     
    Kurzfassung: Wasser ist eine globale Ressource für heutige Gesellschaften – Wasser war eine globale Ressource vormoderner Gesellschaften. Die manigfaltigen unterschiedlicher Wassersysteme für Prozesse der Urbanisierung und das urbane Leben in der Antike und dem Mittelalter ist bislang kaum erforscht. Die zahlreichen Beiträge dieses Bandes fragen nach der grundlegenden kulturellen Bedeutung von Wasser ( bzw. power of water) in der Stadt und Wasser für die Stadt aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven. Symbolische, ästhetische oder kultische Aspekte werden ebenso thematisiert wie die Rolle von Wasser in Politik, Gesellschaft oder Wirtschaft und dem alltäglichen Handeln, aber auch in Stadtplanungsprozessen oder städtischen Teilräumen. Nicht zuletzt stellen die Gefahren von verschmutzten Wasser oder Überschwemmungen die städtische Gesellschaft vor Herausforderungen. Die Beiträge diesen Band lenken den Blick auf die komplexen und vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Wasser und Menschen. Das Sammelwerk präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer internationalen Tagung in Kiel 2018. Es wendet sich gleichermaßen an Leser aus den altertumskundlichen wie mediävistischen Fächern und darüberhinaus an alle Interessierten, die sich über die Vielfalt von Wassersystemen im Stadtraum der Antike und des Mittelalters informieren möchten
