Abstract: As computational power, the volume of available data, IT systems’ autonomy, and the human-like capabilities of machines increase, robots and AI systems have substantial and growing implications for the law and raise a host of challenges to current legal doctrines. The main question to be answered is whether the foundations and general principles of private law and criminal law offer a functional and adaptive legal framework for the “autonomous systems” phenomena. The main purpose of this book is to identify and explore possible trajectories for the development of civil and criminal liability; for our understanding of the attribution link to autonomous systems; and, in particular, for the punishment of unlawful conduct in connection with their operation. AI decision-making processes – including judicial sentencing – also warrant close attention in this regard. Since AI is moving faster than the process of regulatory recalibration, this book provides valuable insights on its redesign and on the harmonization, at the European level, of the current regulatory frameworks, in order to keep pace with technological changes. Providing a broader and more comprehensive picture of the legal challenges posed by autonomous systems, this book covers a wide range of topics, including the regulation of autonomous vehicles, data protection and governance, personality rights, intellectual property, corporate governance, and contract conclusion and termination issues arising from automated decisions, blockchain technology and AI applications, particularly in the banking and finance sectors. The authors are legal experts from around the world with extensive academic and/or practical experience in these areas.

Abstract: “This collection is the kick-start to the kind of important global discussion that is needed.” — Frank J. Porporino, Criminal Justice Consultant; ICPA Group Chair, Research and Development Network “This outstanding collection shines the spotlight on the most overlooked, but surely most important professionals in the ‘correctional’ equation.” —Shadd Maruna, Professor of Criminology; author of Making Good: How Ex-Convicts Reform and Rebuild their Lives This edited collection brings together academics, lawyers, civil servants, and researchers working in the human rights NGO sector, to explore the work and role of prison officers around the world. Each chapter offers a distinctive perspective on the work of prison officers within localised socio-economic and criminal justice contexts, to provide a unique overview and insight into the realities and complexities of the role through accessible scholarly interpretations of their work. The aim of the book is to advance knowledge and understanding of the crucial role that prison officers occupy within carceral systems. The collection has widespread applicability with relevance beyond academia into criminal justice practice and policy internationally. Helen Arnold is Associate Professor in Criminology at the University of East Anglia, UK. Matthew Maycock is Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Monash University, Australia. Rosemary Ricciardelli is Professor and Research Chair in Safety, Security, and Wellness at the Fisheries and Marine Institute at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada.

Abstract: Can we regulate something that doesn’t exist yet? Can Europe create its own Silicon Valley? Who gets to create technological value in today’s world? Whatever happened to the once-flourishing idea of rags to riches? Will new and exciting innovations only ever come from big tech companies? Can the EU establish its own flexible framework for boosting innovation, e.g. by facilitating the transformative use of technologies and data? This book seeks to answer these questions by exploring the differences in copyright culture in Europe and the United States, with its flexible fair use framework. The findings are anything but obvious, and decades of case law on both sides of the Atlantic tell a story of judges going to great lengths to deal with new challenges while navigating the imperfections of statutory law – both where it is too broadly formulated and where it is too prescriptive. How can the population’s creative potential best be fostered? What do software innovations have in common with the evolution of living organisms? What are the vulnerabilities of distributed creativity? Answers are sought in the processes that came into being during the early years of the digital revolution and were then forced to take a back seat as control of the means of production was increasingly placed in the hands of tech companies. The findings and insights presented here are highly relevant for today’s digital policymaking. Market concentration processes in innovation haven’t ceased; they are ongoing. And in an age where data-driven services are creating and reinforcing global oligopolies, the question posed by the U.S. Supreme Court in Google v. Oracle is now more relevant than ever: who should hold the keys to digital innovation?

Abstract: The starting point of this book is the generally shared observation that in violence-torn areas of limited statehood, the civilian population is often subject to deliberate attacks. This violence often escalates to core crimes such as war crimes, crimes against humanity and even genocide. The International Criminal Court (ICC) could potentially deter such crimes. In order to do so, it largely depends on the cooperation of the states on the territory of which alleged core criminals operate. Since such states are often unwilling or unable to cooperate, the book explores whether the ICC could instead seek assistance from international forces such as UN peace support operations, UN-mandated missions, and belligerent occupants. The book covers, on the one hand, the law and practice of the UN Security Council with regard to mandating international forces to arrest and transfer alleged offenders to the ICC or to other international courts. On the other, it addresses to what extent international forces may or must hand alleged offenders over to the ICC, regardless of such mandates. More precisely, the book examines whether the duties to prosecute genocide, torture, enforced disappearance, grave breaches and other war crimes apply extraterritorially and – if so – whether international forces can discharge these duties by transferring suspects to the ICC. At the same time, the book addresses the limitations to such extraterritorial action: firstly, to what extent the prohibition of the use of force and the principle of territorial sovereignty restrict extraterritorial deprivations of liberty and transfer to the ICC. Secondly, it explores the restrictions and permissions that the law of occupation and other norms of international humanitarian law impose on such apprehensions and transfers. Finally, it discusses how international forces can uphold the right to liberty and security as well as the principle of non-refoulement when they extraterritorially apprehend ICC suspects. This also reflects the book’s relevance with regard to the more general debate on the extraterritorial application of human rights.

Abstract: This book presents a fresh approach to cybersecurity issues, seeking not only to analyze the legal landscape of the European Union and its Member States, but to do so in an interdisciplinary manner, involving scholars from diverse backgrounds – ranging from legal experts to ICT and engineering professionals. Cybersecurity requirements must be understood in a broader context, encompassing not just conventional aspects, but also emerging topics. This can only be achieved through an interdisciplinary approach. Indeed, cybersecurity should be consistently considered in relation to cybercrime and/or cyber defense, while examining it through the lens of specific domains that are intertwined with various legal fields. Moreover, it is crucial to uphold ethical standards and safeguard fundamental rights, particularly regarding personal data protection. By adopting this comprehensive perspective, the significance of cybersecurity in the exercise of public authority becomes apparent. It also plays an essential role in upholding the fundamental values of both individual Member States and the EU as a whole, such as the rule of law. Moreover, it fosters trust, transparency, and effectiveness in market relations and public administration interactions. In turn, the book draws on the expertise of its authors to provide insights into ICT components and technologies. Understanding these elements holistically is essential to viewing every "cyber" phenomenon from a legal standpoint. In addition to the holistic and interdisciplinary approach it presents, the book offers a captivating exploration of cybersecurity and an engaging read for anyone interested in the field.

Abstract: This edited volume addresses the environmental and cultural underpinnings of the kind of social conflict that spawned the origins and elaboration of ritualized human and animal sacrifice in Mesoamerica. The chapters variously document the place of cultural evolution and social complexity in the origins and elaboration of ritual human sacrifice, cannibalism, and trophy-taking across a broad spectrum of Mesoamerican cultural and social contexts that first saw the light of day before 2600 BCE, and rapidly developed and proliferated across the Mesoamerican world in the centuries to follow. They study the developments in sacrifice rituals through the centuries into the first millennium CE, when the Mexica Aztec and their allies had elevated ritual human sacrifice such that they produced a plethora of sacrificial acts, modes and manners of death, and associated deities to articulate the necro-cultures and blood-tribute of the times. The chapters further study present-day rites of Amerindian communities from throughout Mesoamerica that include paying homage to the deities of earth and sky through sacrifice and consumption of animal surrogates. The interdisciplinary effort undertaken by this international cadre of scientists, including anthropologists, bioarchaeologists, art historians, ethnohistorians, iconographers, and religious studies experts provides a particularly rich forum for launching an interrogation into the role of conflict, environment, and social complexity in the emergence and persistence of ritual violence and human sacrifice in the Mesoamerican world.

Abstract: This book highlights the changing dynamics of Muslim identity and integration in Britain, focusing on the post-9/11 era. Historically, Muslims faced discrimination based on ethnicity rather than religion. However, contemporary discrimination against Muslims is rooted in different reasons, with events like the Rushdie affair significantly impacting multicultural relations. This study analyzes the evolving multicultural landscape in Britain, exploring the shift from predominantly assimilationist policies to a more mutual process of integration. It delves into the emergence of interfaith dialogue as well as the complexities surrounding the intersection of race, religion, gender, and identity. The research examines two key themes: the discursive positioning of Islam beyond integration and terrorism narratives, and the operationalization of identity by Muslims in various contexts. The study employs empirical methods and cultural studies theories to understand how individual and social practices intersect in this context. By doing so, it contributes to Islamic studies, socio-political studies, and cultural studies, shedding light on the discourses that shape and are shaped by Muslim lives in Britain. The analysis encompasses diverse perspectives, from macro-level societal discourses to micro-level individual actions, thus providing a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted experiences of Muslims in Britain.

Abstract: “A thorough and insightful analysis of the histories of four archaeological artifacts which entered the public space of New York City as diplomatic gifts. The objects are important in-and-of themselves as archaeological artifacts but Macaulay shows that they came to be intricately embedded in the city’s evolving identity as a powerhouse of international political and economic relations. Her refreshing approach takes into account the political framework of gift exchange both in originating countries and in the US as well as the legal framework of circulation of antiquities.” —Nassos Papalexandrou, University of Texas, Austin. This book investigates why nations with rich archaeological pasts like Egypt, Greece, and Jordan gave important antiquities—often unique, rare, and highly valued monuments—to New York City, New York Institutions, and the United States from 1879 to 1965. In addition to analyzing the givers’ motivations, the author examines why New Yorkers and Americans coveted such objects. The book argues that these gifted antiquities function as archaeological ambassadors and that the objects given were instruments of cultural diplomacy. These gifts sought to advance the goals of Egypt, Greece, and Jordan—all states that had rich cultural and archaeological heritages—with the United States, once an ascendent nation and then a global superpower, to strengthen cultural, economic, and political relations. Elizabeth R. Macaulay is an Associate Professor of Liberal Studies, Classics, Middle Eastern Studies, and Digital Humanities at The Graduate Center, The City University of New York. Her research examines the intersection of antiquity and modernity. She is the author or editor of six books, including Antiquity in Gotham: The Ancient Architecture of New York City (2021) and Classical New York: Discovering Greece and Rome in Gotham (2018). Educated at Cornell and Oxford Universities, she has served as a general trustee of the Archaeological Institute of America. She chairs the board of Smarhistory.org, the Center for Public Art History, where she is also a regular contributor and acquiring editor.

Abstract: Drawing on empirical research with older South Asian migrant women, this book puts forth new understandings on how older, settled, migrant women construct and understand age through recollections of key life course events that are structured around gendered positions. Divesting from a Western-centric view and presenting a decolonial and Black feminist lens to ageing, the author presents intersectionality and transnational positionality as useful tools to connect old age, migration and memory in critical studies on aging. Chapters flesh out life course memories at different key stages and examines how the intersections of multiple markers of identity (race, gender, language, immigration status, age, etc.) shape how older South Asian migrant women understand and experience their lives. This book will be of interest to scholars with a focus on Gender Studies, Migration Studies, Ageing Studies, and Mobility Studies.

Abstract: This book presents and analyses the results of the Lockdown Library Project survey, using a range of quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a unique insight into the ways in which the first UK COVID-19 lockdown affected public reading habits. The authors begin by outlining the background to the study, the research methodology and design, and an overview of the headlines of the data, before going on to survey the literature on the relationship between pandemics, literature (especially the role played by genre and popular fiction) and reading habits. They then examine how participants reported that the lockdown period had affected the amount that they read; how they accessed books and discussed their reading with others; the use of reading as a coping strategy; and returning to re-read books that offered familiarity, reliability, and nostalgia. Finally, the concluding chapter brings together the overall findings of the project and briefly outlines future work in the field. This book will be of interest to academics in fields such as literary and genre studies, applied linguistics, corpus linguistics, stylistics, health humanities, and sociology, as well as practitioners working in education, in bibliotherapy, and in libraries. Abstract: 1. Introduction -- 2. The source of the fundamental disconnect in modern economics -- 3. The nature and causes of the living standards of nations -- 4. Comparative country data -- 5. International economic governance -- 6. Conclusion.
Abstract: This open access book examines the chronic underperformance of economies with respect to inclusion, sustainability and resilience. It finds that the standard liberal economic growth and development model has evolved over the past century in a fundamentally unbalanced manner that underemphasizes the crucial role of institutions – legal norms, policy incentives and public administrative capacities – in translating market-based growth in the production of goods and services into broad and sustainable gains in social welfare at the household level. Correcting this imbalance of emphasis in economic theory and policy between markets and institutions, production and distribution, and national income and household living standards is the single most important step required to transcend 20th century trickle-down “neoliberalism” and replace it with a more human-centred model of economic progress in the 21st century. The book breaks new ground by integrating the principal institutional dimensions of the social contract into the heart of macroeconomic theory and presenting extensive corresponding reforms of domestic and international economic policy to refocus them on the median living standards, rather than primarily aggregate wealth or GDP, of nations. This is the bottom-line measure of national economic performance, and it depends on the strength of both markets of exchange and institutions in such areas as labour and social protection, financial and corporate governance, competition and rents, anti-corruption, infrastructure and basic necessities, environmental protection, education and skilling, etc. Extensive comparative data are presented demonstrating that countries at every level of economic development have ample policy space to narrow their “welfare gaps” – their underperformance on these and other key aspects of household living standards relative to the frontier of leading policy practice in peer countries. Richard Samans is Director of the International Labour Organization’s Research Department and its Sherpa to the G20, G7 and BRICS processes. .

Abstract: This open access book focuses on the ‘downstream’ element of PFM, that is how public organisations utilise public resources. It argues that improvements in PFM/IC will only flow from a recognition that what really matters is the quality of management. Management reform is an essential precondition to the successful implementation of many new techniques. Only when a managerial capacity exists willing to take advantage of the opportunities created by such technical developments, is it beneficial to pursue them. The benefits of PFM/IC flow from an improved quality of management. Despite enormous efforts, reform of public financial management and internal control (PFM/IC) in developing and transition economy countries has not been particularly successful in improving the quality of public service delivery and the use of public resources. This book outlines why this is and suggests a new approach. The analysis set out in this book is particularly relevant especially given limited national budgets and squeezed international aid budgets. These management changes include to the political/official relationships, to management structures, to budgetary and accounting arrangements and to the relationships between, particularly, the ministry of finance and other ministries. They require the delegation of operational management, developments in financial management and in accountability arrangements and a reconsideration of personnel policies, penalty and sanction arrangements. Managerial training for the civil service will be a key requirement. Reform may impact upon traditional cultural practices. These changes are all inter-related and should be coordinated. Noel Hepworth was the Chief Executive of CIPFA from 1980-1996. He is a qualified public finance accountant and was the initial Chairman of Accountancy of Europe’s Public Sector Committee and a technical adviser to IFAC’s Public Sector Accounting Standards Board for a period of years. More recently, he has worked extensively with OECD/SIGMA in many countries. Earlier in his career he worked in local government. He was an original member of the UK Audit Commission. Abstract: This open access book assesses the prospects of (re)adopting organization as a pivotal concept in biology. It shows how organization can nourish biological thinking and practice, by reconnecting with the idea of biology as the science of organized systems. The book provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art picture of the characterizations and uses of the concept of organization in both biological science and philosophy of biology. It also deals with a variety of themes – including evolution, organogenesis, heredity, cognition and ecology – with respect to which the concept of organization can guide the elaboration of original models and new experimental protocols. It will be of interest to biologists and scholars working in philosophy of science alike. .

Abstract: “This book of essays by leading scholars on the Armenian Genocide is a fitting tribute to Taner Akçam and a major contribution to the field he has helped to define. Embodying the virtues of his pathbreaking work, they present both micro- and macro-perspectives on one of the twentieth-century’s defining events.” —A. Dirk Moses, City College of New York, USA “This book is a major contribution to the field of Armenian Genocide Studies. The interdisciplinary aspect of the book - that ranges from gender violence, humanitarianism, the role of cinema, and memoirs, to the economic dimension of the genocide, activism in genocide studies, and historiographic analysis - provides new perspectives on the Armenian Genocide and its repercussions. The book is a must read to all those interested in understanding the different facets of the Armenian Genocide.” —Bedross Der Matossian, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA This open access book brings together contributions from an internationally diverse group of scholars to celebrate Taner Akçam’s role as the first Turkish intellectual to publicly recognize the Armenian Genocide. As a researcher, lecturer, and mentor to a new generation of scholars, Akçam has led the effort to utilize previously unknown, ignored, or under-studied sources, whether in Turkish, Armenian, German, or other languages, thus immeasurably expanding and deepening the scholarly project of documenting and analyzing the Armenian Genocide. Abstract: This Open Access book presents an in-depth portrait of the use and impact of digital technologies by learners ages 5-18 years in their everyday lives. The portrait is framed by the ecological-systems theory and situated across four domains: home, leisure time, education, and civic participation. Various methodological approaches are used in innovative ways to analyze data collected in a large-scale EU Horizon 2020 project. The purpose of this edited collection is to shed light on both beneficial and harmful effects of digital technology from a perspective that children are active agents who are empowered to accentuate the positives of digital technology use and over common challenges that inhibit digital competence with support from education stakeholders. This is an open access book. Halla B. Holmarsdottir is Professor at the Faculty of Education and International Studies, Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway. Conclusion.
Abstract: This book demonstrates the relevance of the historical perspective with respect to national and international payment systems. Its analysis of national and international payments develops along a dialectical path that starts with the work of the Classics (thesis), undergoes a radical turn with the advent of the neoclassical school (antithesis), and reaches the modern theory of emissions passing through Keynes’s contribution (synthesis). That the history of economic thought occupies a legitimate place in the field of historical studies is beyond dispute. What may be less well understood is that it can serve purposes beyond those of the academic community of historians. This book critically investigates the contributions of the greatest economists of the past to provide insights into the pathologies of today’s systems of national and international payments and into the reforms that are needed to correct them. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in economic policy and the history of economic thought. Abstract: This book reconsiders the role of translation and own-language use in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom. It shows prospective teachers how to use the learners’ own language and translation optimally. The author surveys current research about the EFL classroom and presents both a theoretical framework and a didactic model for using translation and learners’ mother tongues. This is done through an action research project, assessing the proposed didactic model for optimal translation practice in English Language teaching (OTP in ELT) through its integration into teacher education. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in the areas of Translation Studies and Applied Linguistics (particularly EFL, ESL, TEFL and TESOL), as well as educators and designers of pre-service training programmes for language teachers. Abstract: This edited collection represents a first-of-its-kind exploration of English-related discourses in the Caribbean. Drawing from Critical Discourse and stylistic analyses, the book's wide-ranging chapters examine language as it is produced within the complex demographic milieu of the region. It addresses a critical lack of linguistic scholarship on discourse types from the Caribbean, since the major academic focus in the post-independence era has been on descriptive and interventionist work in Creole Linguistics. This volume seeks to add new dimensions to language in practice with its focus on the development of discourse types within the region, public policy, discourses surrounding the galvanising figure of the Caribbean Prime Minister, literary discourses, and gender and media representations. As a site of great variation, linguistic and otherwise, the Caribbean provides unique insight into the interplay of the socio-political and language in contemporary societies in the Global South. Based on work presented at the University of Trinidad and Tobago’s “Stylistics, Critical Discourse Analysis and Language Use in the Caribbean” 2021 conference, the book draws together papers from established Caribbeanists seeking to bridge the existing theoretical and analytical gap between the more macro, socio-political aspects of studies in the social sciences, and the more micro features of linguistic analysis. With its breadth of coverage and analysis, this volume has implications for work being done at all levels of university scholarship in the social sciences, media discourses, decolonisation practices, and language and society in postcolonial and multi-ethnic contexts worldwide. Ryan Durgasingh is a Research Fellow at Ruhr University, Bochum, and PhD candidate at the University of Münster, Germany, where his work focuses on morphosyntactic variation in Caribbean Englishes. His research interests include stylistics, Critical Discourse Studies, variationist sociolinguistics, and corpus-based approaches to linguistic analysis. Nicha Selvon-Ramkissoon is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Education Programmes, University of Trinidad and Tobago. Abstract: “A brilliant book on the practices and politics of making multilingual theatre in a in a European continent in flux where language is anything but stable.” — Professor Maria Delgado, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London “Profoundly impactful for our understanding of dramaturgy, translation, collaboration.” —Professor Patrick Lonergan, University of Galway Multilingual Dramaturgies provides a study of dramaturgical practices in contemporary multilingual theatre in Europe. Featuring interviews with international theatremakers, the book gives an insight to diverse approaches towards multilingual theatre and its dramaturgy that reflect cultural, political, and economic landscapes of contemporary Europe, its inhabitants, and its theatres. First-hand accounts are contextualized to reveal a complex set of negotiations involved in the creative and political tasks of staging multilingualism and engaging the audience, as well as in practical issues like funding and developing working models. By bringing voices of artists together and providing a critical commentary, the book reveals multilingual dramaturgies as webbed practices of differences that also offer new ways of understanding and performing identity in European context. Multilingual Dramaturgies sheds light on an exciting theatre practice, argues for its central role in European future, and highlights potential directions for its further development. Kasia Lech is a scholar, actor, storyteller, dramaturg, puppeteer, and Associate Professor in Global Performance History at the University of Amsterdam. Her research and creative practice explore theatre through practice-based and traditional scholarship and primarily focus on theatre in relation to multilingualism, verse, translation, migration, dramaturgy, and cross-cultural encounters. Abstract: This book explores the trajectories and structures of Latin American welfare states using a typology developed through conceptual and historical analyses of social protection systems in Latin America. It argues that social protection can be accomplished by different actors in distinct societies, be that the State, civil society, the market, or families. This work defines four types of welfare worlds based on who administers and allocates resources: the socio-corporatist, the statist, the commodified, and the familial. Author Ilan Bizberg delves on the historical trajectories of ten Latin American countries, each with a unique analysis of the corresponding social protection system: Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador The book begins with a meaningful discussion on the welfare state as a necessity of modern capitalist societies. Then, it counters the consequences of the disembeddedness of the economy from society and the way the social protection system protects the society against this rupture. Chapters focus on the health system, pensions, and assistance programs of these countries, with diverse case studies that include analyzing the performance of the health systems during the pandemic. The book closes with a discussion on gender and the situations women face and encounter under and within different social-protection regimes. Ilan Bizberg is Professor and Researcher at El Colegio de México, Associate Member of the International Graduate College “Temporalities of the Future” of the Freie Universität Berlin, and Associate Member of the CEIM of the Université de Quebec in Montreal. In 2020, he was awarded the Humboldt Foundation Research Prize. He is the author of several books, including Diversity of Capitalisms in Latin America (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).

Abstract: Eminent lawyers from academia, international judiciary and legal practice join up to honour Professor Mads Andenas KC (Hon). Contributions form a cutting edge volume across legal disciplines led by an advisory editorial committee including Prof. Guido Alpa, Prof. Carl Baudenbacher, Prof. Eirik Bjorge, Prof. Giuseppe Conte and Prof. Duncan Fairgrieve. The general private law of tort and delict is subject to a transformation where the traditional national framework is becoming gradually less relevant. Much of the modernisation of private law takes place not at the domestic level but at a European or international level such as in international commercial conventions or EU consumer protection legislation. Remedies in regulatory law are becoming ever more important. The role of the European Court of Justice in developing general principles of contract and tort is ever increasing. Tort liability is an important subject of international conventions with the case law of the International Court of Justice developing general principles of tort liability in public international law.

Abstract: “To revisit the legacy of Vatican II as it attempted to reconstruct the relation of church and state around a theology of the laity; to honour its ambitions to escape from the straitjacket of a two-level theory of authority; to enrich it with concepts drawn from the primary missionary impulses of the apostolic church and the debates of contemporary political theology; those are the very considerable ambitions of this constantly stimulating book. It should prove rewarding to Christians in all churches, taking one major Christian achievement of the twentieth century as a starting point for an ecumenical approach to the challenges of political life in the twenty first.” —Oliver O'Donovan, Professor Emeritus, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK Should religion and politics be kept apart? What should be the relationship between the church and the state? M.Y. Ciftci answers these questions by studying the most important event in the recent history of the Catholic Church: The Second Vatican Council (1962-65). The book provides a new interpretation of the Council’s teaching on church-state relations to better appreciate its flaws and need for reform. By paying attention to the (often overlooked) importance given by the Council to the lay apostolate, it reveals how the Council did not reform, as is often thought, but retained a flawed conception of the laity’s role in politics. It then proposes a new framework for understanding church-state relations using the ressourcement method of returning to scripture and tradition, and by a critical dialogue with Oliver O’Donovan and various Protestant biblical scholars of the Powers in the New Testament. Ciftci shows how fruitful an self-consciously ecumenical approach can be for political theology. As most ressourcement theologians have overlooked political issues, and since ecumenical theology rarely touches on issues of church-state relations, this work makes an original contribution to the ressourcement project and to ecumenism. M. Y. Ciftci is Public Bioethics Fellow at the Anscombe Bioethics Centre. He was previously Etienne Gilson Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto.

Abstract: This textbook is a second edition of the successful, Mathematical Logic: On Numbers, Sets, Structures, and Symmetry. It retains the original two parts found in the first edition, while presenting new material in the form of an added third part to the textbook. The textbook offers a slow introduction to mathematical logic, and several basic concepts of model theory, such as first-order definability, types, symmetries, and elementary extensions. Part I, Logic Sets, and Numbers, shows how mathematical logic is used to develop the number structures of classical mathematics. All necessary concepts are introduced exactly as they would be in a course in mathematical logic; but are accompanied by more extensive introductory remarks and examples to motivate formal developments. The second part, Relations, Structures, Geometry, introduces several basic concepts of model theory, such as first-order definability, types, symmetries, and elementary extensions, and shows how they are used to study and classify mathematical structures. The added Part III to the book is closer to what one finds in standard introductory mathematical textbooks. Definitions, theorems, and proofs that are introduced are still preceded by remarks that motivate the material, but the exposition is more formal, and includes more advanced topics. The focus is on the notion of countable categoricity, which analyzed in detail using examples from the first two parts of the book. This textbook is suitable for graduate students in mathematical logic and set theory and will also be of interest to mathematicians who know the technical aspects of the subject, but are not familiar with its history and philosophical background. .

Abstract: In a world of globalization and technological change, terrorism continues to pose grave threats not only to more traditional targets such as civilians and government targets, but according to many experts, increasingly to multinational corporations and other international economic enterprises. This book broadens the understanding of the threats posed to the private sector thereby helping business executives in charge of security affairs prepare for new threats and unconventional threats in a continuously evolving world. Chasdi's Terrorist Assault Business Vulnerability Index (TABVI) now provides C-class executives with a way to measure (potential) host country and host country industry vulnerability and thus contributes a critical new standard to help appraise where and when MNCs and other international enterprises should marshal Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and other resources. In addition, his statistical findings about different country operational environments work to frame TABVI findings and provide in-depth understandings of risk in several different (potential) host countries. While the focus is on traditional terrorist groups and criminal syndicalist organizations that use terrorism in particular developing world host countries, Chasdi's research also informs the business community about the context of political issues of contention defined by terrorist groups and their constituent supporters. Business leaders, government officials at national and local government levels, the academic community, and the media benefit from ideas proposed in this book. Brian M. Jenkins writes a carefully reasoned, comprehensive, and insightful Foreword that describes the importance of this topic; about Chasdi, he writes, "...I am an admirer of his uniquely imaginative approaches and always rigorous analysis. His work is invariably intellectually challenging and thought provoking. Read on.".

Abstract: Gamma rays are positioned distinctively in the electromagnetic spectrum, characterized by energy over 100 keV and wavelengths less than 10 picometers. Paul Villard discovered them in 1900, and their ability to penetrate deeply was quickly recognized. The discovery of artificial radioactivity in 1934 by Irène Joliot-Curie and Frédéric Joliot significantly increased the availability of gamma-ray sources. This established the foundation for their extensive utilization. Currently, gamma rays are widely utilized in several fields of science, industry, medicine, and beyond. Notable uses encompass radionuclide exploration, radiation-based treatment of materials, sterilization of medical products, medical imaging, cancer therapy, and food sterilization through irradiation. Nevertheless, numerous applications are still being actively studied as researchers persist in discovering novel methods to utilize gamma rays in various fields. This book includes five chapters, each dedicated to elucidating recent advancements in applying gamma rays within a particular domain. The subjects addressed encompass a broad spectrum, including mineral discovery, crop development, insect management, and improvement of food quality. The chapters focus on innovative methodologies, methodological advancements, and practical obstacles to efficiently utilizing gamma rays. The chapters provide valuable insights informing readers about the advances in many application domains during the past decade. In general, the volume demonstrates the diverse usefulness of gamma rays in several scientific fields and technological endeavors. The statement underscores that despite being identified more than a century ago, gamma rays remain a dynamic study area with significant potential for present and future applications. This book will appeal to students, academics, and professionals looking to thoroughly examine the various uses of gamma rays in contemporary society

Abstract: Phosphorus (P) stands second to nitrogen in terms of its essentiality as a plant macronutrient, as well as due to its involvement in almost all plant developmental stages, primary and secondary plant metabolisms, maintenance of membrane structures, and in the structural skeleton of major biomolecules. An optimum P-supply also helps plants combat abiotic stress impacts. Most P in soil remains unavailable for uptake by plants. P-containing fertilizers are being added to agricultural lands to sustain high yields. Only the least amount of the applied P (20%–30%) is used by most cultivated plants, and the rest remains as legacy P (P surpluses), which eventually causes eutrophication. This book, Phosphorus in Soils and Plants, reviews P in soils and plants, P dynamics in the soil–water–sediment environment, the major roles of P in the photosynthetic dark phase-biochemical pathways, major approaches for the sustainable management of P in agriculture, main mechanisms underlying the role of P in the regulation of plant–microbe interactions in the rhizosphere, literature on the role of microbial phosphate solubilization in management of soil and plant nutrients, and insights into P recovery through waste transformation. This volume is an important resource for plant biologists involved in teaching or research who wish to advance their knowledge of P in soils and plants

Abstract: Chaos theory is an interdisciplinary area of scientific study and a branch of engineering focused on the law of dynamic systems. Even very accurate measurements of the current state of a chaotic system become useless indicators of where the system will be. Many approaches to nonlinear dynamics such as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), phase-plane diagram, Poincaré map, bifurcation diagram, and Lyapunov exponent are used to detect and suppress the chaotic motion at different degrees of freedom. Chaos can help scientists explore the sudden transition from periodic motion to non-periodic motion at any dynamical system. There is a relationship between the finite element method and chaos analysis in which the dynamic quantity is increased with the increase of mesh generation. The refinement of element size in mesh generation affects the chaotic phenomenon Chaos theory has a wide variety of applications in engineering, such as robotics, and in medical fields, such as human gait locomotion. The dynamic description of the long-term behavior of any dynamical quantity is hard or impossible to predict. The three factors that affect chaos analysis are time delay, embedding dimensions, and the distribution of that dynamical quantity against time. Periodic, non-periodic motions, and chaos are used to describe the level of nonlinear dynamics. The vibrational signal of chaos might be continuous, discontinuous, solitons, and fractals. This book contains the method of chaos to detect the level of chaotic motion such as entropy, Lyapunov exponent, Poincare map, and phase-plane diagram

Abstract: Salmonella is a Gram-negative bacterium and a member of the Enterobacteriaceae family that causes infections in humans and animals, making it one of the most common causes of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. Since its discovery in the late 1800s, significant progress has been made in the understanding of its genetics, classification, pathogenesis, detection, prevention, control, and treatment. Numerous reviews and chapters on Salmonella have been published, but some gaps remain to be addressed. This book includes seven chapters that focus on the low-cost prevention, control, and treatment of salmonellosis in developing countries. It begins with a brief review of Salmonella, followed by chapters on the transmission of the organism in food and companion animals relevant to the One Health approach, CRISPR-Cas systems in Salmonella for pathogen typing in diagnosis and surveillance, the low-cost control of Salmonella using solar disinfection of water in resource-limiting communities, and transmission and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Salmonella across the One Health sector. This book also introduces a new concept of AMR reversal using traditional Chinese medicine. The information provided in this book will encourage Salmonella researchers, medical professionals, and students to further enhance their own research and education as well as encourage new researchers to include Salmonella in their future research initiatives

Abstract: This book presents a comprehensive overview of ataxia, a common neurological disorder that affects all ages. It can manifest in children when they start to sit and walk and under a specific form of genetic disease and in the elderly through falls that worsen with age. In general, ataxia consists of the involuntary lack of coordination of muscle movements, which mainly presents as abnormalities in gait, changes in speech (e. g., scanning speech), and abnormal eye movements such as nystagmus. It results from dysfunction of the nervous system areas responsible for the coordination of movements and, most commonly, the cerebellum and its connections to the cerebrum and periphery. The book is organized into three sections and six chapters that address such topics as genetic conditions, childhood-onset ataxia, ataxia and multiple sclerosis, therapeutic interventions, and more

Abstract: Diverticulosis refers to an outpouching of colonic mucosa and submucosa outside of the intestinal lumen. It commonly occurs around the penetrating blood vessels. It can occur in any segment of the bowels; however, the sigmoid colon is the most affected segment. Diverticulosis (the presence of diverticula in the colon) remains asymptomatic in most individuals, but approximately 25% of people with diverticulosis will experience symptomatic diverticulosis, which is referred to as diverticular disease. In the past two decades, diverticular disease has become one of the most commonly diagnosed bowel disorders. It is seen across the globe and its incidence is high, especially in Western countries. It is estimated that in many developed countries around 50% of the population older than 50 years is affected by diverticular disease. It was once believed to be associated with increasing age, however, in recent studies, its prevalence in younger populations has increased. In about 10%–25% of patients with diverticulosis, the disease progresses and leads to diverticulitis. Many theories have been suggested for the different etiologies of diverticular disease, and the most common cause is believed to be a low-fiber diet. It is believed that diets low in fiber are associated with increased intracolonic pressure, which leads to diverticula formation. Diverticular disease can have variable clinical presentations. Most often it presents as abdominal pain or change in bowel habits and rectal bleeding. Its clinical picture can at times mimic inflammatory bowel disease or bowel malignancy. Its common sequelae include diverticulitis, perforation, and peri-colic abscess/phlegmon. The complications of diverticular disease include abscess, fistula, and bowel strictures. Small or localized collections can be managed with intravenous antibiotics and depending on the available resources, intervention radiology can also be used to manage such cases. CT scan is considered a more specific technique for diagnosis. It can also be used for reviewing the patient's progress to treatment, with serial scans over time. It is also used for treating some complications, such as performing percutaneous drainage of abdominal abscesses

Abstract: Nitrification and denitrification are essential processes for the aquatic ecological system and vital for human health. While ammonia is applied for disinfection together with chlorine to produce chloramine, excessive ammonia may cause nitrification and bacteria growth in the water transmission pipeline. Since excessive discharge may cause eutrophication and deterioration of the aquatic system, nitrate is regulated for wastewater discharge in sensitive areas. Further, nitrate needs to be monitored and controlled in drinking water treatment to protect against methemoglobinemia in bottle-fed infants. Various conventional technologies exist, such as adsorption, ion exchange, photocatalytic oxidation, air stripping, biological nitrification and denitrification, and so on, to remove nitrogenous compounds from water. Since ammonia and nitrate are important constituents in fertilizers besides phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), nutrient recovery is drawing attention to maintaining the supply of reliable and sustainable fertilizers. This book provides a comprehensive overview of nitrification and denitrification

Abstract: Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) is a sacred tree and noble resource from South America. The Mayans and other early civilizations in Central America used cacao beans as tokens, which were subsequently transported to Europe to nurture monarchies and elites. Based on the discovery of cacao’s commercial potential and attributes, new cocoa plantations were established in other parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Thus, cocoa has become an important cash crop in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia, where it is a major foreign exchange earner, industrial raw material, support for livelihood, and ecosystem services provision. Based on its global importance, there has been an increased need for the expansion of cultivation to meet the rising demand for cacao beans. Global environmental change, including climate change, variability, and weather extremes, has established new environmental boundaries with implications for area suitability for cocoa production and sustainability. Efforts to unlock the potentials of the established environmental boundaries may be built on the development and adoption of agrotechnological practices and integration of climate resilience for harnessing opportunities and potentials of the new environment, and thus, extension of the frontiers of cacao cultivation to meet the increasing global demand for cocoa beans. This book, “Shifting Frontiers of Theobroma Cacao - Opportunities and Challenges for Production” presents a comprehensive perspective of the interactions of changing environmental conditions, cocoa production, and sustainability. The book illuminates the challenges climate change presents for cocoa production and sustainability. It provides insights into the need for cocoa actors within the cocoa sector to strengthen climate mitigation and resilience building and to come to grips with the realities, magnitude, and inevitable persistence of climate challenges to cocoa production and sustainability

Abstract: Comparative Literature - Interdisciplinary Considerations is a wide-ranging exploration of various aspects of comparative literature and cultural phenomena from different angles. The authors delve into intriguing topics such as literary tourism, biofiction, colonial/postcolonial literature, suspense in literature, and the interaction between different artistic mediums. For instance, the analysis of Gabriel García Márquez’s works sheds light on the genres of magic realism and the Latin American boom, as well as how his literature influences literary tourism experiences. Another example is the study of Anna Enquist’s work, which showcases the genre of biofiction and examines the complex messages conveyed through reconstructed voices and alternative perspectives, including the portrayal of Captain Cook’s wife. This is compared with historical accounts of the 18th-century Ottoman Empire during Sultan Selim III’s reign, as studied by Stanford Shaw in Between Old and New. The book also explores the theme of unease and suspense in Patricia Highsmith’s writing, focusing on her iconic character Tom Ripley, known for his psychological depth and morally ambiguous nature. Additionally, discussions on colonial/postcolonial literature and the representation of women’s restrictions from a historical perspective contribute to a better understanding of power dynamics, gender representation, and non-Western literature. Henri Fauconnier’s Malaisie is analyzed in the context of “paracoloniality,” highlighting the transformative potential of Western texts and emphasizing overlooked aspects in discussions of colonial and postcolonial literature. The volume offers valuable insights into the representation of nations and historical figures through Malay and Persian travel narratives, as well as their influence on cultural identity. Moreover, the chapters explore the evolution of literary genres, the interconnectedness of literature with other art forms, and the impact of technological advancements on artistic expression. Overall, this book provides valuable perspectives on the rich tapestry of literature, art, and culture. It encourages scholars to explore diverse cultural expressions and fosters interdisciplinary dialogue within the field of comparative literature

Abstract: An abscess is a collection of pus in any part of the body. There are two different types of abscesses: skin abscesses and internal abscesses. Skin abscesses (cutaneous abscesses) develop under the skin. They are common and typically easy to treat. Internal abscesses develop inside an organ or in the spaces between organs and can be more difficult to identify than skin abscesses. The symptoms can be vague and there may be no obvious external signs of a problem. This book provides a comprehensive review of the different types of abscesses along with their causes and treatments
