    Abstract: Basierend auf Mythen und Legenden erzählt der Film auf verschiedene Weise die Geschichte der peruanischen Anden und des Dorfes Balta, einer Siedlung der Kashinawa, und seiner Bevölkerung. Zugleich gibt er Einblicke in das Alltagsleben (Brandrodung, Jagd, Nahrung) der Kashinawa. Es kommen unterschiedliche Erzählansätze (Legenden, im Schulunterricht) zur Anwendung.
    Abstract: Based on myths and legends, the film shows different ways of telling the history of the Cashinahua people and of Balta village in the Peruvian Andes. We also learn about everyday culture (slash-and-burn agriculture, hunting, food). Different strategies of telling history and stories (legends, school lessons) are applied.

    Abstract: Anthropologist/filmmaker Barbara Keifenheim studied the Kashinawa (Huni Kuin) of the Peruvian lowlands from 1977 until 1996. In this film, co-directed by Patrick Deshayes and originally made in a German and French version in 1984 using older film excerpts from a film from 1951 by Harald Schultz, the Indians speak about their cultural values, cosmology, rituals and their encounters with the Whites' world. Images of everyday life and work in metal-production from Germany are shown to the Indians and interpreted by them. Film images appear to them like their drug visions. The English version of 2009 contains concluding statements about cultural change in the Indians' world since the 1980s. (German subtitles, see film C 12693)

    Abstract: Die Geschichte des Filmes beginnt schon 23 Jahre vor seiner Veröffentlichung, im Jahr 1984. Damals wurde im südindischen Dorf Mulayiur ein Film über den Alltag der dortigen Reisbauern gedreht, der sich insbesondere mit dem Kastensystem befasst. Über Unberührbare, die niedrigste Schicht, heißt es: "Vom sozialen und religiösen Leben des Hauptdorfes sind sie ausgeschlossen. Es gibt keine Möglichkeiten, die Kastenschranken zu überwinden". Aber wie ist die Stellung der Unberührbaren heute? Was hat sich verändert im Dorfgefüge? Während im Dorf mitgelebt wird, berichten die Protagonisten von damals und ihre jüngeren Angehörigen über die heutige Situation. Dabei vermitteln Unberührbare und Angehörige höherer Kasten überraschend unterschiedliche Bilder der Entwicklung des Kastensystems. Mit Ausschnitten des IWF-Films "Alltag tamilischer Reisbauern in Südindien" (D 1629).
    Abstract: The history of the film already begins 23 years before its release, in the year 1984. At that time, a film was made in the South Indian village Mulayiur, which dealt with the everyday life of rice farmers in the village, particularly with regard to the caste system. About untouchables, the lowest caste, is said: "They are separated from the religious and social life of the main village. There is no way of overcoming the caste barriers." But what`s about the situation of the untouchables today? What has changed in the social structure of the village? While living with the protagonists of the older film and their young relatives in the village, they report about the situation today. In doing so, untouchables and members of higher castes convey surprisingly diverse images of the development of the caste system. Including sequences from the IWF film "Daily Life of Tamil Rice Growers in South India" (D 1629).

    Abstract: Die Moore Ostfrieslands sind abgetorft - das Land präsentiert sich kultiviert. Dennoch: Nahezu alle Ostfriesen verbindet noch immer eine ganz besondere Beziehung zu dem Stoff, der ihr Land einstmals meterhoch bedeckte. Ob Liebe oder Hass: Das Moor hat die Mentalität der Ostfriesen geprägt wie sonst vielleicht nur das Wasser. Auch wenn der Kampf mit dem Moor keine Existenzen mehr beeinflusst, so sind die Spuren, die er hinterlassen hat, doch weiterhin sichtbar: In den Tradierungen, den Geschichten, Legenden und Erinnerungen der Menschen. Und vor allem in den Symbolen des Torfgrabens: Der "Tweekrieger", der "Sticker" und die Torfkarre. Diese Arbeitsgeräte rufen bei wohl jedem Ostfriesen mit starken Emotionen besetzte Assoziationen hervor. Bei diesem Filmprojekt stehen die Erinnerungen an eine Arbeit im Mittelpunkt, die noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten das Leben der Ostfriesen bestimmte wie keine andere.
    Abstract: East Friesland's moors nowadays are cutaway bogs. The landscape is cultivated. Still, most East Frisians have a special connection with the stuff that once covered their land meters high. For love or hate: the moor has shaped the East Frisians' mentality like probably only the water was able to. Even if the rigours with the moor do not influence any livelihoods, the traces it left are still visible: in the traditions, stories, legends, peoples' memories. And above all in the symbols of cutting peat: the "Tweekieger", the "Sticker" and the peat kart. For their associations, these tools still arouse strong emotions in any East Frisian. This film project focuses on the memories of a work that only a few decades ago determined the lives of East Frisians like no other.

    Abstract: This film is a portrait of the filmmaker's uncle, the patriarch Haj Taghi, an old bazaar shoe merchant in Borujerd, Western Iran. After a car accident he had to hand over business to his sons. They talk about the economic and family problems, many of them resulting from the changes from traditional to modern values in contemporary Iranian society.

    Abstract: Das Leben der Moorkolonisten, die abseits der Wasserstraßen in den abgelegenen Mooren Ostfrieslands siedelten, war erbärmlich. Der desolate Zustand der Wege schnitt sie im Herbst und Winter von der Außenwelt ab, vor ihren Hütten türmte sich übermannshoch das Moor auf. Die lebensfeindlichen Bedingungen werden greifbar, wenn sich die Protagonisten an die kleinen Kolonistenhäuser erinnern, in denen sie Tür an Tür mit Schaf und Ziege lebten; wenn sie berichten, wie mühselig es war, das Moor Meter für Meter abzutorfen und das neue Land zu kultivieren; wenn sie uns zeigen, wo immer wieder die Pferde eingesackt sind, wenn sie die mit Torf beladenen Wagen aus dem Moor ziehen sollten. Bei diesen Erzählern handelt es sich um die letzte Generation derjenigen, die wie ihre Vorfahren direkt am Moor siedelten und einen Eindruck davon hinterlassen können, was es heißt, ein Kolonist zu sein.
    Abstract: The life of the moor colonists who settled beyond the waterways in the outlying moors of East Frisia was miserable. The desolate condition of the paths isolated them from the outside world in fall and winter, in front of their huts the moor towered head-high. These hostile conditions become tangible when the protagonists remember their small houses where they lived door to door with sheep and goats, when they tell how arduous it was to harvest the peat meter by meter and to cultivate the land; when they show us the places where the horses used to be bogged down with their turf loaded waggons. The protagonists belong to the last generation of settlers who colonized the moor like their ancestors and who can give us an idea of what it means to be a colonist.

    Abstract: Sorbe ist, wer sich als Sorbe bekennt - so die offizielle Definition der sorbischen Minderheit, festgeschrieben in der sächsischen Landesverfassung. Weder Abstammung noch Sprache sind entscheidend: Was zählt, ist das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl, die Selbst-Definition. "Sorbe sein - Sorbe bleiben" erzählt aus der Sicht "bekennender" sorbischer Jugendlicher aus Bautzen davon, was es eigentlich bedeutet, sorbisch zu sein. Die sorbische Sprache zu sprechen, an der sorbischen Kultur teilzuhaben, der katholische Glaube, der Wunsch und die Schwierigkeit, einen sorbischen Partner zu finden - all das sind Bausteine einer sorbischen Identität, die alles andere als einheitlich ist und die sich neben und innerhalb der deutschen Identität behaupten muss. Für die Jugendlichen geht "sorbisch sein" weit darüber hinaus, an sorbischen Traditionen wie dem Osterreiten oder einer Trachtentanzgruppe teilzunehmen - ein sorbisches Kabarett oder eine sorbische Jugendgruppe, die Feten, Veranstaltungen und der Austausch mit anderen Minderheiten, zeugen davon.
    Abstract: A Sorb is anybody who claims to be a Sorb - thus the official definition of the Sorbian minority, as it is codified in the Saxonian Constitution. Neither genealogy nor language matter, decisive is the feeling of belonging, the self-definition. The film tells its story from the angle of Sorbian youths from Bautzen, telling us what it means to be a Sorb. To speak the Sorbian language, to share the Sorbian culture, the Catholic faith, the desire and difficulty to find a Sorbian spouse - all these are elements of a Sorbian identity which is all but uniform and has to prove itself inside the German identity. For Sorbian youths "to be a Sorb" goes far beyond practising the Sorbian traditions like Easter riding or attending folklore groups - a Sorbian cabaret, a Sorbian youth group, their parties, events and the cooperation with other minorities bear witness to this.

    Abstract: Das Unternehmen erscheint ungeheuerlich: Spatenstich für Spatenstich, Meter für Meter, Tag für Tag, Jahr für Jahr gruben sich die ostfriesischen Fehntjer ins unendliche Moor, um es dann auf ihren kleinen Torfschiffen in die nahegelegenen Städte zu verschiffen; von dort brachten sie Stallmist, Fäkalien der Städter und Sand aus der Ems zur Kultivierung der abgetorften Moorfläche mit. Alles per Hand. Die Kanäle wurden zu den Straßen Ostfrieslands und die Schiffe mit ihren Besatzungen zum Inbegriff von Mobilität, zum weithin sichtbaren Symbol für Beweglichkeit und Freiheit. Im Film wird dieses Bild zurechtgerückt: Die Fehntjer präsentieren sich in ihrem unermüdlichen Kampf als Idealtyp der Menschheitsgeschichte - gegen jede Unbill ankämpfend machen sie sich ihre Umwelt zur Heimat - nach ihrem Bilde. Eine Landschaft, die sich uns heute adrett, aufgeräumt und als "typischer" ostfriesischer Naturraum präsentiert, erscheint so in einem anderen Licht.
    Abstract: The operation seems monstrous: spade by spade, meter by meter, day after day, year after year the East Frisian 'Fehntjer' dug the endless moor to ship the peat to nearby towns in their little peat ships. In order to cultivate the cutaway bogs, they brought back dung, town-dwellers' faeces and sand from the river Ems. All by hand. The channels became the East Frisian roads, and along with them the ships and their crew became the quintessence of mobility, the evident symbol of freedom. In the film this impression is adjusted. In their tireless struggle the 'Fehntjer' present themselves as the ideal type of mankind. Fighting against any rigours, they make their land their homeland - formed after their image. A landscape that nowadays seems to be smart, neat, tidy, the "typical" East Frisian natural landscape appears in another light.

    Abstract: Der experimentelle Dokumentarfilm reflektiert Besonderheiten eines Aufeinandertreffens westafrikanischer und europäisch/westlicher Kultur. Er stellt Westeuropäer vor, die einige Jahre in Westafrika lebten, zeigt Straßensituationen, erzählt Begebenheiten, sammelt Materialien und Eindrücke von den Reisen der Filmemacherin nach Ghana, Benin und in den Senegal. Gisa, die mit ihrer Tochter Madita mehrere Jahre in Burkina Faso lebte, beschreibt Momente der Nähe und Fremdheit dort. Vertrautes zeigt sich im fremden Umfeld manchmal grotesk, manchmal poetisiert. Bilder und Motive möglicher Faszination und Sehnsucht nach dem Anderen kontrastieren mit der Frage, ob ein Kontakt zur Fremde überhaupt möglich ist. Der Film ist auf Super-8 und Mini-DV gedreht. Durch die Materialwirkungen und den Wechsel von Momentaufnahmen und aus der Zeit gehobenen bildhaften Einstellungen entsteht gelegentlich ein schwebender Zustand zwischen Vorstellung und konkretem Alltag.
    Abstract: The experimental documentary reflects the encounter between West African and European/Western culture, introducing Europeans who lived in West Africa for some years. It shows situations on the streets, tells stories, collects materials and impressions from journeys of the film maker to Ghana, Benin and Senegal. Gisa, who lived with her daughter Madita in Burkina Faso for several years, recalls moments of closeness and foreignness. The most trusted things can sometimes appear grotesque, sometimes poeticized in a foreign environment. Images and stories of a potential fascination and longing for the Other contrast with the question whether a contact to the foreign is possible at all. The film was shot on super-8 and mini-DV. The material effects and the alternation between vivid shots and quasi timeless picturesque scenes occasionaly create a blur between imagination and plain everyday life.

    Abstract: Der auf Vanuatu, Fidschi und Samoa entstandene Film gewährt Einblicke in Kava-Rituale, wie sie heute praktiziert werden. Kava ist nicht nur ein überkommenes Relikt, es wird mehr und mehr zum identitätsstiftenden Symbol vieler Pazifikinsulaner. Bei einer Schale Kava, das aus der Wurzel eines Pfeffergewächses gewonnen wird, schließt man Freundschaft oder empfängt seine Gäste. Heute wird Kava vor allem außerhalb ritueller Anlässe konsumiert und für den globalen Markt produziert. Für viele Pazifikinsulaner aber wird Kava immer eines bleiben - der Trank der Götter.
    Abstract: This film, set in Vanuatu, Fiji and Samoa, gives insight into Kava rituals as they are carried out today. But Kava is more than just a cultural relic, it is becoming a symbol of identity for many Pacific Islanders as for Oceania as a whole. Through Kava, a drink made from the root of a pepperplant, friendships are formed, visitors welcomed, and chiefly authority sanctioned. Today, Kava is increasingly bought, sold and consumed within non-ritual contexts. It is extracted, packaged, and produced for global markets. But for many Pacific Islanders, Kava will always remain: the drink of the Gods.

    Abstract: Eine Musikgruppe der neuseeländischen Polizei reist nach Samoa, um dort beim jährlichen Teuila-Festival aufzutreten. Ihr Präsident, der Polizeikommissar Tyrone Laurenson, wurde mit samoanischer Abstammung in Auckland geboren und hat Samoa des öfteren bereist. Das Gruppenmitglied Mike Alofa dagegen, der als Sicherheitsoffizier arbeitet und als 8jähriger von Samoa nach Neuseeland kam, fährt nun erstmals nach 20 Jahren wieder in seine Heimat. Am Beispiel dieser beiden Protagonisten und ihrem Alltagsleben sowie ihren Gefühlen für ihre Heimat Samoa beschreibt der Film die doppelte Identität von Migranten, die ihren samoanischen Wurzeln verhaftet bleiben, zugleich aber eine neue, an westlichen Werten orientierte Identität in Neuseeland aufbauen. Die DVD enthält neben dem Film (C 1994) einen Kommentar, ein Gespräch des Filmemachers Rolf Husmann mit dem Hauptprotagonisten Tyrone Laurenson sowie ein 35minütiges Interview der beiden zum Thema Identität und Migration. Beide Gespräche wurden im Juli 2002 aufgezeichnet. Alle Gespräche und Kommentare wurden transkribiert und sind als Textdateien beigefügt.
    Abstract: A Cultural Group of the New Zealand Police travels to Western Samoa to perform at the annual Teuila Festival. Two group members of Samoan origin also return to Samoa on this occasion. While for Auckland-born Tyrone Laurenson, a police officer in Auckland and president of the group, it is just one of his regular visits to Samoa, for Michael Alofa, who came to New Zealand with his parents as an eight-year-old and now works in the security industry, it is the first return after 20 years. By describing the two protagonists' everyday life and work as well as their feelings about the notion of "home", the film exemplifies the split and at the same time double cultural identity of migrants who remain rooted in their Samoan culture, while over the years a new, western-oriented identity in New Zealand emerges. The DVD contains the film (C 1994) as well as the "film makers' commentary", a talk between film maker Rolf Husmann and protagonist Tyrone Laurenson, and a 35-minute-interview of the two. Both talks were recorded in July 2002. All conversations and commentaries were transcribed and are included in text files.

    Abstract: Schlittschuhlaufen hat in Ostfriesland Tradition: Seit der Urbarmachung der Hochmoore durchziehen Kanäle das Land - wenn sie im Winter zufroren, öffnete sich den einsamen Höfen für eine Weile das Tor zur Welt: “Ich fahr eben mal nach Emden, ´n Glas Senf kaufen”, war eine Redensart der Landbewohner, die sonst das ganze Jahr nicht in die Stadt kamen.     Abstract: Ice skating has a long tradition in East Frisia: the network of canals criss-crossing the countryside dates back to the time when the high-lying moors were first cultivated - when they froze in winter, the gateway to the world was opened for a while to isolated farms: ”I’m just off to Emden to buy a pot of mustard” was a saying of the countryside dwellers, who otherwise never visited the town the whole year round. In the film they recollect the expanses of water that covered the countryside in the autumn and froze in the winter, as well as ”skating brides” and legendary competitions.

    Abstract: In Spergau, einem Dorf in unmittelbarer Nähe von Halle/Saale, findet alljährlich am Lichtmeßtag (2. Febr.) ein Heischegang der Junggesellen statt, dessen Vorspiel jedoch bereits Monate zuvor beginnt. Der Brauch spielt bei den Beteiligten, darüber hinaus aber im Bewußtsein der Dorföffentlichkeit eine außerordentliche Rolle. Der Film bietet eine ausführliche Dokumentation der Lichtmeß des Jahres 1996, zeigt die wichtigsten Figuren und befragt die Akteure. Ergänzt wird dieses durch kurze Sequenzen historischer Filmaufnahmen von Hans Hahne aus den 1920er Jahren.
    Abstract: At Spergau, a village near Halle/Saale, the bachelors perform an annual gift collection on Candlemas day (Feb. 2nd) whose preparation starts months before. This custom plays an important role not only for the organizers but for the whole village. The film documents the Candlemass of 1996, shows the most important figures and interviews the actors. Additionally, the film offers short sequences of historical footage by Hans Hahne from the 1920s.

    Abstract: Im Jahr 1993 trafen sich in Südäthiopien Vertreter der Arbore, Borana, Konso, Tsamai, Hamar and Dasanech, um Frieden zu schließen. Ethnologen waren zugegen, und der britische Ethnologe Alula Pankhurst filmte die Zusammenkunft. Ein Speer wurde von jeder Gruppe symbolisch stumpf gemacht und zerbrochen, danach wurden Symbole des Friedens an alle Teilnehmer ausgehändigt. Auf Einladung des Ältesten Grazmatch Surra kehrten Ivo Strecker und Jean Lydall 2002 zurück. Grazmatch hatte eine Botschaft für die ganze Welt: Blutvergießen ist eine Schande, für alle Ethnien in Äthiopien wie für die ganze Welt. Es bringt Armut und Krankheit. Solche und weitere Ideen werden von Grazmatch in einer Serie von Gesprächen im Film entwickelt. Sein Sohn Horra erläutert die Ereignisse von 1993, indem er an den ursprünglichen Ort des Geschehens zurückkehrt.
    Abstract: In 1993, in southern Ethiopia, the Arbore, Borana, Konso, Tsamai, Hamar and Dasanech met to make peace. Anthropologists from the South Omo Research Center witnessed the event, and Alula Pankhurst filmed the debates. One spear from each group was brought, placed on the ground, blunted and then broken. After the instruments for war were destroyed, tools of peace were given to all participants. In 2002, anthropologists Ivo Strecker and Jean Lydall returned, following an invitation by Grazmatch Surra. He had a message that he wanted them to bring to the whole world: Bloodshed dishonours not only the people of southern Ethiopia but all people wherever they live on earth, and poverty and sickness ultimately derive from the wilful spilling of human blood. These and similar ideas are developed by Grazmatch Surra in a series of spellbinding conversations. His son, Horra, returns to the sites where the original peace ceremony took place and explains the historic events.

    Abstract: This is a film about performance, and the fear of not being able to perform successfully. In Meena Bazar in old Delhi, the tenuous aspirations of men and boys are reflected in their faces as they cluster around Aslam's street stall to listen to his spiel about how to enhance male sexual performance. Near Aslam’s stalls is a school for wrestlers (akhara), where discipline and abstinence from impure sex are encouraged by the guru. In an adjacent tea shop, men appreciate storytelling that invokes the humorous and the fantastic, offering an escape from the dreariness of their daily lives. All of these men have, in their different ways, found a way to perform life's tasks in an insecure world.

    Abstract: Im November und Dezember 1985 wurden in acht Ayt-Yazza-Dörfern der Ayt-Hdiddu-Berber am Asif-Mllull-Fluß in Südmarokko 101 Bräute von ihren Eltern in tagelang gemeinsam ausgeführten Zeremonien verheiratet. Die Bräutigame spielen dabei eine untergeordnete Rolle. 98% dieser Erstverheirateten werden wieder geschieden. Man sucht sich dann den nächsten Partner selbst und kann künftige Ehen ohne großes Heiratszeremoniell eingehen.
    Abstract: In November and December of 1985 101 brides were married by their parents in collective ceremonies lasting several days taking place in 8 villages of the Ayt-Hdiddu-Berbs at the Asif Mllull river in southern Morocco. The bridegrooms play a less important role. 98% of the first marriages are divorced. The next partner is chosen autonomously and further marriages take place without great ceremonies.

    Abstract: Die Töpferin Kambanpi holt am Berg von Aibom Tonerde. Unter ihrem Haus sitzend, mischt und knetet sie zwei Tonsorten mit Wasser durch. Sie formt zwei Schüsseln aus dem Vollen, in Parallelwulst- und Treibtechnik. Sie stellt den Rand einer vorgetrockneten Feuerschale her und setzt Verzierungen auf. Eine Schüssel versieht sie mit Henkel und Verzierungen. In einem offenen Feuer brennt sie die Gefäße. Die noch heißen Töpfe bestreicht sie mit Sagobrühe.
    Abstract: The female potter Kambanpi climbs the hill of Aibom and digs some clay. Back to the village she mixes two different kinds of clay together with water. She makes two vessels. An already dried hearth is decorated and to another vessel decoration is added. The pots are placed on a frame of palm leaves and covered with more dried leaves. After the fire the rather hot pots are sealed with starchy sago water.

    Abstract: Innerhalb der hohen Umzäunung um das Männerhaus beginnt für die Novizen eine lange Seklusionszeit, während sie in die Geheimnisse des Männerhauses eingeweiht werden und bestimmte Fertigkeiten erlernen: Schnitzen und Flechten, Musikinstrumente spielen, gegen Feinde kämpfen und sich von Frauen absondern. Sie sind mit weißer Tonfarbe eingeschmiert, und um den Hals tragen sie einen Baststrick (Nabelschnur), der nach Ende der Seklusion entfernt wird. Zweiter Film einer dreiteiligen Serie; vgl.     Abstract: In the enclosure of the men's house the initiates spend a long period of seclusion, during which time they are initiated into the secrets of the men's house and taught special activities: carving and plaiting, playing the flute and the bull-roarer, fighting against enemies, and separating from the women. They are smeared with white clay, they wear a string of bast (the "navel-string") round the neck, and they are given several meals a day to grow big and strong.

    Abstract: Zu Beginn der Trockenzeit erscheint die Kwifon-Gesellschaft von Oku im heiligen Gehöft von Lomoto, um den königlichen Ahnen Mkong Moteh durch Tänze zu ehren. Nach dem Abschlagen des Grases auf dem Vorplatz verteilt der König Kolanüsse und Palmwein und hält eine Ansprache. Auf dem Grab beginnen die Tänze mit dem Rasseltornister Kebak. Unter Führung der Mabuh-Maske tritt Kwifon dann den Rückmarsch zum Palast an.
    Abstract: The Kwifon Society of Oku has gathered at the sacred compound of Lomoto to perform the dances customary at the onset of the dry season in honour of Mkong Moteh the most eminent of the royal ancestors. After the forecourt is cleared of grass with a bushknife and the king has arranged for cola nuts and palm wine to be passed around, the dancing atop the king's grave begins, starting with Kebak, the most important Kwifon instrument. Led by the Mabuh mask Kwifon returns to the apace.

    Abstract: Der Film zeigt ohne Unterbrechung durch Schnitt den Penigpuk genannten Tanzabschnitt aus einem Legong, in dem der Prinz um die Prinzessin wirbt und abgewiesen wird. Beide Rollen werden von Mädchen getanzt.
    Abstract: The part presented of the Legong dance, called Penigpuk, shows the King Lasem courting Princess Lankesari. The parts are both danced by girls, the King executing sweeping "masculine" movements and attitudes. In the course of the dance there is a more and more distinct approach of the King to the Princess, first by swaying his head (ritualized nose rubbing) at a certain distance, later on close to her head. The Princess returns this gesture, but wards off further approaches in part rather direct (pinching the thigh). Worldly natural elements are mixed in a jocular manner with a highly developed style of dancing, the dancers even attempting to overcome their human nature by emphasizing cultural behaviour and self control as men's second nature.

    Abstract: In der Nähe des Dorfes Japanaut springen Buben vom Steilufer des Sepiks in den Fluß hinunter. Sie schwimmen, planschen, schliddern in Wassernähe auf dem glitschigen Ton und schmieren sich mit Schlamm ein. Sie handhaben kleinere Kanus und stoßen sich dabei gegenseitig ins Wasser.

    Abstract: Im Zentrum des Geschehens steht ein junger Mann, dessen Vater in einem Kampf getötet wurde. Trauergäste und Angehörige bekunden durch Klagen, Haare- und Bartraufen und Trauerbemalung ihre Anteilnahme. Der laut klagende junge Mann wird umarmt, gestreichelt und betätschelt. Er klammert sich an die Tröstenden und birgt seinen Kopf an deren Brust. Die zentrale Trauergruppe wird von mit Lehm beschmierten Frauen und Männern umschritten.
    Abstract: Pronounced mourning on the loss of a partner and the marked sympathy of other members of the group who are not directly affected by the loss are two of the many universal attributes shared by mankind. To my knowledge there is nothing which corresponds to this in the animal world. Possibly the depression shown by monogamous geese on the loss of a partner is analogous to our mourning. However, the goose does not receive comfort from the other members of the species. It appears to be specific to humans to join in mourning and proffer sympathy.

Nach der Opferzeremonie berichten die Diviner einzeln dem Oberdiviner über den Verlauf der Handlung. Anschließend tanzen sie gemeinsam mit den anwesenden Zuschauern.

    Abstract: One week before Ash Wednesday, Shrovetide is proclaimed out of a waggon in various places of the town of Wolfach. After the "Eleven o'clock Mass" on the following "Dirty Thursday" pretzels are distributed to the children. The procession of the coffee-party tabbies takes place in the afternoon of the same day. Shrovetide proper is opened on Shrove Monday by the so-called "Well-awake", a historical custom meant to wake up the fools. The big Shrove Monday procession in the afternoon is followed by the Shrovetide play about the abduction and the liberation of the gipsy princess. On Shrove Thuesday, the children have a procession of their own during which the Pretzel Fool is carried along. Towards the evening, the Procession of the Noses is passing through the streets; women disguised as males that have been practicipating are plunged into the fountain. Shrovetide ends on Ash Wednesday when the fool break into lamentations at the Wailing Wall and are then going to wash their money-bags in the fountain.

    Abstract: A high fence is constructed around the men's house. A long file of adorned men dance back and forth, shouting the names of a powerful primordial crocodile in order to entice it. The sounds of the slit-gong and the water stamping tube are the crocodile's voice. The next morning the young initiates are conducted in the enclosure and scarified: Crocodile designs are made on the breast, arms, and back. Finally the initiates are presented to their mothers and sisters waiting in front of the enclosure.

Die andere Frau versorgt das Feuer in der Feuerschale, über dem Fische geräuchert werden, dreht sich eine Zigarette und raucht. Dann spielen beide Frauen auf der Maultrommel oder unterhalten sich mit dem Mann. Schließlich kriechen sie in einen altertümlichen, geflochtenen Mattenschlafsack, während der Mann weiterschnitzt.

    Abstract: Im Beisein der bedeutendsten Würdenträger des königlichen Klans weiht der König von Oku das größte, eben erst renovierte Totenhaus der verstorbenen Könige durch eine Opferzeremonie. Nach einem längeren Gebet des Königs erfolgt das Schafopfer und das Einreiben der Grabhügel mit Blut, Palmöl und Erde. Der König verteilt Kolanüsse und Palmwein; gleichzeitig wird das Schaf geröstet.
    Abstract: Following the renovation of the largest of the dead houses belonging to the deceased kings of Oku, it must be consecrated by means of a sacrificial ceremony performed by the king and the most important dignitaries of Mbele, the royal clan. After a lengthy prayer is intoned by the king, a sheep is sacrified and the burial mounds are rubbed with a mixture of blood, palm oil, and earth. While the sheep is being roasted, the king passes out cola nuts and palm wine.

    Abstract: The period of seclusion being over, the initiates leave the enclosure of the men's house. After a thorough washing on the river bank the whole village conducts them back to the men's house. Last instructions and exhortations are given to them by the elder men. They are no longer children but adult men and as such reintegrated in the village-community.

Sechs Tage später: Die Braut wird der Familie des Bräutigams vorgestellt. Am folgenden Tag: Die Braut bekundet rituell ihren Übertritt in die Familie des Bräutigams. Die Zeremonie endet überraschend mit einem Gottesdienst.
    Abstract: Friends and relatives gather in the bridegroom's kraal to await the arrival of the bride and her entourage. Six days later: the bride is presented to the family of the bridegroom. On the next day the bride ritually affirms her joining the bridegroom's family. Suprisingly, the ceremony ends with a divine service.

    Abstract: Nach der Reisernte findet im Dorf Hutajulu ein 4tägiges Umbettungsfest statt. Am Friedhof und am neuen Grabmal, gen. Tugu, werden die Knochen der Vorfahren ausgegraben. Zusammen mit den Gebeinen der in der Fremde Verstorbenen werden sie in 71 kleinen Särgen im neuen Tugu untergebracht. Die Tänze im Dorf werden von der Sippe Hutajulu eröffnet. Die Vertreter der 'brautnehmenden' Familien überbringen tanzend ein Geldgeschenk als ihren Festbeitrag. Ebenfalls tanzend bringen die 'brautgebenden' Familien ihr Reisgeschenk ein. Ein Wasserbüffel wird geschlachtet und sein Fleisch bei dem gemeinsamen Festessen symbolisch an die 'Brautgeber' verteilt. Im Abschlußtanz empfangen die Veranstalter den Segen der 'Brautgeber'-Familien.
    Abstract: A four day log reburial festival takes place in the village of Hutajulu after the rice harvest. In the churchyard and the Tugu (grave) the bones of the ancestors are exposed and, together with the bone of those which died outside the village, are brought to a new tugu in 71 small coffins. The village dance is initiated by the Hutajulu clan. Those families accepting a bride bring a present whilst dancing. The families giving a bride dance in bringing rice. A water buffalo is slaughtered and during the communal feasting the meat is distributed amongst the families which have given a bride. In the ultimate dance the organizers receive the blessings of the bride-giving families.

    Abstract: How closely linked the various domains of a planting culture are in daily life is demonstrated by means of examples from the activities of a leading Kwoma, Yessomari, who comes from the village of Meno-Saserman in the Washkuk Hills (Ambunti District, East Sepik Province). The film largely follows the planting cycle, from clearing the land (work done co-opertively by the planter, other men from his close cricle of friends and relations, and women) and burning the stubble through the digging of planting holes (done co-operatively by a large group of men), planting the yams, tying up and tending the creepers (the planter's three specific activities) to harvesting the crop. In between, glimpses are given of other sectors of male responsibility, like carving a decorated beam for a men's house, preparing a pandanus soup, extracting sago starch, making and decorating a piece of ceremonial pottery and painting a chip-carved shield. The film closes with a look at a harvest festival, which women with shields made of decorated net bags also take part in, dancing in front of the men's house.

    Abstract: Asin, ein 16jähriger Junge aus einem Nachbartal (Siferuk), ist mit Verwandten und Freunden zu Besuch nach Munggona gekommen, wo er vor einiger Zeit initiiert wurde. Der Besuch dient der zeremoniellen Abgeltung der Initiation. Er überreicht seinem damaligen Betreuer eine breite Stirnbinde aus Nassa-Schnecken. Als Gegengabe erhält er Schweinefett.
    Abstract: Accompanied by his relatives and friends a young man of sixteen has arrived for a visit from the neighbouring valley to Munggona, where he has been initiated a short time ago. The purpose of this visit therefore implies the ceremonial compensation for the initiation. As a gift the young man hands over a broad forehead band covered with thin slices of the shells of Nassa-snails to the man who had taken care of him during his initiation. As a return present he gets some pig's fat.

    Abstract: Durch Umwickeln von Wurzelfasersträngen mit weichen Rindenbastfasern stellt ein 14jähriger Junge in Malingdam/Imarin einen Nackenschmuck her. Der Schmuck wird mit Latex grundiert, mit Holzkohle und roter Erdfarbe bemalt und mit Federn verziert. An der Arbeit beteiligen sich mehrere Männer. Der Mum wird von Männern nach Abschluß der Pubertät, vor allem bei Tanzfesten, getragen.
    Abstract: By wrapping soft bark fibres around the strings of root fibres a fourteen-year-old boy makes a back ornament. He then spreads it with latex, paints it with charcoal and red ochre, and decorates it with feathers. Several people participate in the work. The mum is worn by men after puberty and put on for dance festivals.

Auf dem Versammlungsplatz der Männer werden auch andere Arbeiten verrichtet: Weben eines Stirnbandes, Schnitzen einer Pfeilspitze usw. Plötzlich fängt ein Haus an zu brennen. Der Brand wird gelöscht, der Schaden gleich behoben.
    Abstract: Near the men's house of the hamlet of Imarin a lot of people help in the rebuilding of a family house. On the meeting place of men different kinds of work are done: weaving a forehead band, carving an arrow tip, etc. Suddenly a house has caught fire. The flames are put out, the damage is immediately repaired.

    Abstract: Auf dem Dorfplatz von Malingdam/Imarin, wo sich die Männer aufhalten, stellt ein Mann aus Kalzitplatten durch Ritzen mit Steinsplittern eine Nasenstabrohform her. Als die Rohform zerbricht, arbeitet er an einer neuen, die er anschließend am Bach naß schleift und poliert. Um ihn herum finden andere Aktivitäten statt: Flechten, Faserherstellung, Gesichtsbemalung, Körperreinigung, Haarscheren, Maultrommelspiel, Gesang usw.
    Abstract: A man is sitting on the village ground, the meeting place of men. Using chips of broken stones he carves a nose sticks out of a piece of calcite stone. The calcite breaks and he carves another one. Afterwards he grinds and polishes it at the streamlet. Around him the other men are busy with plaiting, making fibres, face painting, body cleaning, hairshearing, playing a jew's harp, singing, etc.

    Abstract: Von den vielerlei Spielgeräten der Krahó-Kinder, die oft kleinere Abbilder der Waffen und Geräte der Erwachsenen sind, werden einige in Aktion gezeigt: Zwille, Armbrust, kleine Flinte, Bogen und Pfeil, Kugelbogen, Stelzen, summender Kreisel, Surrscheibe.
    Abstract: Krahó children posses various playthings, often small imitations of weapons and tools of the adults. The film shows the following playthings being used: catapult, crossbow, small gun, bow and arrow, pellet bow, stilts, humming top, and bull-roarer.

    Abstract: A oracle priest, who is well known in all of Ladakh, prepares the daughter of a deceased oracle priest for her succession: trance, donning the cult clothes, recitation, disease treatment (sucking out morbid matter with a small tube), drum oracle, "hindrance exorcising rite", waking out of the trance.

    Abstract: Nach vorbereitenden Opfern in dem Andachtsraum wirft ein junger Mann zwei Orakelhölzer, die dem Orakel erst ein positives (wie hier), negatives oder neutrales Vorzeichen verleihen. Dann wirft er aus einem zylindrischen Bambusbehälter ein beziffertes Bambusstäbchen heraus. Ein auf die Orakelinterpretation spezialisierter Mönch liest aus dem Losbüchlein den Text vor, der für das entsprechende Orakelstäbchen bestimmt ist.
    Abstract: The film shows a method of divination by drawing a lot in form of a numbered bamboo stick, shaken out of a cylindrical bamboo container filled with many similar sticks. In order to give a positive, negative, or neutral value to this oracle, the two halves of a split bamboo sprout-the "oracle chips" - are thrown like dice, their respective position specifying the oracle's answer. The final details of the answer can be read from a special interpretation booklet.

    Abstract: Auf dem Grundstück eines Wahrsagers in Dimbasa wird die Endphase der Initiation einer Divinerin festlich begangen: Nach dem Anrufen der Ahnen durch die Lehrerin wird eine Medizin schaumig geschlagen. Die Novizin nimmt etwas Schaum zu sich und wird mit den Insignien der Divinerin geschmückt. Während der Zeremonie werden wiederholt Tänze aufgeführt.
    Abstract: At Dimbasa, in the homestead of a diviner, the final stage of the initiation of a female diviner takes place: After the invocation of the ancestors by the woman teacher a medicinal substance is beaten into froth. The novice takes some froth and is invested with the diviner's insignia. In the course of the ceremony several dances are performed.

Es wird auf die für diese Kultur charakteristische Zusammenarbeit von Männern und Frauen bei der Gewinnung von Nahrungsmitteln sowie von Männern in losen Gruppen eingegangen, ebenso auf die religiösen Verknüpfungen.
