    Abstract: Immer mehr Menschen in der Schweiz praktizieren Yoga, glauben an eine Wiedergeburt und lassen sich komplementärmedizinisch behandeln. Barbara Zeugin untersucht, wie sich dieser religiöse Wandel auf die Begleitung am Lebensende auswirkt Insofern alternative Formen von Religion in der Schweiz zunehmen, ist es nicht erstaunlich, wenn in der Begleitung am Lebensende auch alternativ-religiöse Praktiken und alternative Heilverfahren sowie die entsprechenden Rationalisierungen immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Rekonstruktion einer solchen, als alternativ aufgefassten Sterbebegleitungspraxis führte die Religionswissenschaftlerin erstens in ein Hospiz für schwer Kranke und Sterbende und zweitens in ein anthroposophisch-medizinisches Spital, wo sie beobachtend und fragend den folgenden Fragen nachging: Welche alternativ-religiösen Handlungsformen und Rationalisierungen spielen in der Begleitung am Lebensende eine Rolle? Welche Bedeutung wird alternativen Heilpraktiken zugeschrieben? Wie sieht die konkrete Begleitungspraxis aus? Und worin besteht letztlich die Alternativität dieser Praxis resp. wie verhält sich diese zum Selbstanspruch der Palliative Care, die schwer Kranken und Sterbenden auch spirituell zu begleiten?

    Abstract: What causes some people to stand in solidarity with those from other races, religions, or nationalities, even when that solidarity does not seem to benefit the individual or their group? Seeing Us in Them examines outgroup empathy as a powerful predisposition in politics that pushes individuals to see past social divisions and work together in complex, multicultural societies. It also reveals racial/ethnic intergroup differences in this predisposition, rooted in early patterns of socialization and collective memory. Outgroup empathy explains why African Americans vehemently oppose the border wall and profiling of Arabs, why Latinos are welcoming of Syrian refugees and support humanitarian assistance, why some white Americans march in support of Black Lives Matter through a pandemic, and even why many British citizens oppose Brexit. Time was often imagined as a movement from the past to the future: the past is gone and the future not yet here. Only present-day subjects could establish relations to other times, recovering history as well as imagining and anticipating the future. In a movement paralleling the emphasis on the porous self, constituted by emotions situated not inside but between subjects, this Element argues for a porous present, which is open to the intervention of ghosts coming from the past and from the future. What needs investigating is the flow between times as much as the creation of boundaries between them, which first banishes the ghosts and then denies their existence. Emotions are the most important way through which subjects situate and understand themselves in time.

    Abstract: Exodus 1-2 erzählt von der Unterdrückung der Hebräer in Ägypten und der Geburt der künftigen Retters Mose. Christliche und jüdische Ausleger in der Spätantike interpretierten diesen Text aus ihrer je spezifischen Perspektive, als Teil ihrer religiösen Gemeinschaft. Sie gehen mit teils gemeinsamen, teils unterschiedlichen Voraussetzungen, Hermeneutiken und Methoden an der Text heran. Im Hintergrund stehen immer die religiöse Praxis und Lehre der eigenen religiösen Gemeinschaft. Dabei zeigen sich Prozesse der Rezeption ebenso wie Ablehnung und Abgrenzung. Besonders die christliche Schriftauslegung lässt vielfach Polemik gegen das Judentum erkennen, die sich durch die Jahrhunderte weiter fortgesetzt hat. Dennoch finden sich auch zahlreiche Berührungspunkte und gemeinsame Motive, die immer wiederkehren – neben spezifisch jüdischen und christlichen Traditionen. So entsteht in der patristischen und rabbinischen Auslegung ein vielfältiges Bild des biblischen Textes.

    Abstract: Complaints are often made that recommendations about how to rear children are contradictory and, therefore, not helpful. In this Element we survey the history of theory and research relevant to childrearing in an attempt to show how apparent differences can be resolved. We suggest that socialization occurs in different domains, with each domain fostering socialization in a different way. Thus there is no all-purpose principle or mechanism of socialization but, rather, different forms of relationship between child and agent that serve a different function, involve different rules for effecting behavior change, and facilitate different outcomes. Using this framework, we survey research relevant to different domains, including the roles played by parents, siblings, and peers in the socialization process. We follow this with a discussion of how culture and biology make their contribution to an understanding of domains of socialization.

    Abstract: This Element brings together the history of emotions and temporalities, offering a new perspective on both. Time was often imagined as a movement from the past to the future: the past is gone and the future not yet here. Only present-day subjects could establish relations to other times, recovering history as well as imagining and anticipating the future. In a movement paralleling the emphasis on the porous self, constituted by emotions situated not inside but between subjects, this Element argues for a porous present, which is open to the intervention of ghosts coming from the past and from the future. What needs investigating is the flow between times as much as the creation of boundaries between them, which first banishes the ghosts and then denies their existence. Emotions are the most important way through which subjects situate and understand themselves in time

    Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations.     Abstract: Acculturation is the process of group and individual changes in culture and behaviour that result from intercultural contact. These changes have been taking place forever, and continue at an increasing pace as more and more peoples of different cultures move, meet and interact. Variations in the meanings of the concept, and some systematic conceptualisations of it are presented. This is followed by a survey of empirical work with indigenous, immigrant and ethnocultural peoples around the globe that employed both ethnographic (qualitative) and psychological (quantitative) methods. This wide-ranging research has been undertaken in a quest for possible general principles (or universals) of acculturation. This Element concludes with a short evaluation of the field of acculturation; its past, present and future.

How are intimate relationships experienced by people living in various types of romantic or sexual relationships and in various cultural regions around the world? In what ways are they similar, and in what ways are they different? This book presents a cross-cultural extension of the findings originating from the classic Boston Couples Study. Amassing a wealth of new data from almost 9,000 participants worldwide, Hill explores the factors that predict having a current partner, relationship satisfaction, and relationship commitment. These predictions are compared across eight relationship types and nine cultural regions, then uniquely combined in a Comprehensive Partner Model and a Comprehensive Commitment Model. The findings test the generalizability of previous theories about intimate relationships, with implications for self-reflection, couples counseling, and well-being.

    Abstract: Stanley Milgram's obedience experiments are among the most influential and controversial scientific studies ever conducted. The experiments are commonly understood to have shown how easily people can be led into harming another person, simply as a result of following orders. Recently, however, Milgram's studies have been subjected to a sustained critique and re-evaluation. This book draws on the vast stock of audio recordings from Milgram's experiments to reveal how these experiments can be understood as occasions for argumentation and rhetoric, rather than showing how passive subjects can be led into simply doing as they are told. In doing so, it reconsiders what we understand by 'obedience' and extends how social psychologists have understood rhetoric itself.

Sie studierte Rehabilitationspsychologie an der Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal, absolvierte ihren Master of Science in Psychologie an der Otago University in Neuseeland und promovierte 2012 an der Universität Osnabrück.     Abstract: This is the first full treatment of Jewish childhood in the Roman world. It follows minors into the spaces where they lived, learned, played, slept, and died and examines the actions and interaction of children with other children, with close-kin adults, and with strangers, both inside and outside the home. A wide range of sources are used, from the rabbinic rules to the surviving painted representations of children from synagogues, and due attention is paid to broader theoretical issues and approaches. Hagith Sivan concludes with four beautifully reconstructed 'autobiographies' of specific children, from a boy living and dying in a desert cave during the Bar-Kokhba revolt to an Alexandrian girl forced to leave her home and wander through the Mediterranean in search of a respite from persecution. The book tackles the major questions of the relationship between Jewish childhood and Jewish identity which remain important to this day

Personality, Values, Culture uses an evolutionary perspective to look at the similarities and differences in personality and values across modern societies. Integrating research on personality and human values into a functional framework that highlights their underlying compatibilities (driven by shared genetic and brain mechanisms), Fischer describes how personality is shaped by the complex interplay between genes and the environment, both over the course of human evolution and within the lifespan of individuals. He proposes a gene-culture coevolution model of personality and values to explain how and why people differ around the world and how genes, economics, social conditions, and climate jointly shape personality.

    Abstract: An innovative examination of American society, culture, and politics, The Age of Charisma argues that the modern relationship between American leaders and followers grew out of a unique group of charismatic social movements prominent in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. Drawing on hundreds of letters and testimonials, Jeremy C. Young illustrates how 'personal magnetism' in public speaking shaped society by enabling a shift from emotionally-inaccessible leadership to emotionally-available leadership. This charismatic speaking style caused a rapid transformation in the leader-follower relationship, creating an emotional link between speakers and listeners, and the effects of this social transformation remain with us today. Young argues that ultimately, charismatic movements enhanced American democracy by encouraging the personalization of leadership - creating a culture in which today's leaders appeal directly to Americans through mass media.

Mutual Intercultural Relations offers an answer to this fundamental and topical issue. By exploring intercultural relationships between dominant/national and non-dominant/ethnic populations in seventeen societies around the world, the authors are each able to chart the respective views of those populations and to generate 'general' principles of intercultural relations. The research reported in this book is guided by three psychological hypotheses which are evaluated by empirical research: multiculturalism, contact and integration. It was also carried out comparatively in order to gain knowledge about intercultural relations that may be general and not limited to a few social and political contexts. Understanding these general principles will offer help in the development of public policies and programmes designed to improve the quality of intercultural relations in culturally diverse societies around the world.

Karin Mlodoch führt in die Geschichte und die Grundlagen des psychologischen Traumakonzepts ein und gibt einen Überblick über die verschiedenen Ansätze und wichtigsten Kontroversen innerhalb der psychologischen Traumaforschung und -debatte. Sie beschreibt die individuellen und sozialen traumatischen Dynamiken nach schweren Gewalterfahrungen und hebt die zentrale Bedeutung von Stabilität, Respekt und Anerkennung für deren Bewältigung hervor. Das Buch wirft einen kritischen Blick auf die inflationäre Nutzung des Traumakonzepts in der Arbeit mit überlebenden von Gewalt und die damit verbundenen Distanzierungs- und Pathologisierungstendenzen.     Abstract: Lange wurde vor allem von einheimischen Psychotherapeuten die Behandlung von Zuwandererkindern vermieden. Aktuell fällt es angesichts der Therapiebedarfe jugendlicher Flüchtlinge schwerer, sich zu entziehen. Unter Beachten von Kultursensibilität erscheinen viele Vorannahmen anachronistisch. Die diagnostischen Besonderheiten in Zuwandererethnizitäten sind geringer als allgemein angenommen: Somatisierungen sind nicht unbedingt häufiger, aber sie können Äquivalente für psychische Störungen darstellen. Enuresis kann häufiger vorkommen, elektiver Mutismus auf familiäres Leid hinweisen. Deutlich erhöht ist die Rate an Angst, Depression und vor allem posttraumatischen Störungen, unter denen Flüchtlinge leiden. Auch die zentrale Bedeutung von Scham- und Schuldkonflikten darf nicht unterschätzt werden; sie könnte eine erhöhte Suizidalität unter jungen Migrantinnen erklären. Insgesamt kann die Behandlung von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund durch das Betreten des 'Dritten Raumes' der Interkulturalität eine bereichernde Erfahrung sein. Prof. Dr. Renate Schepker, Psychoanalytikerin, beschäftigt sich seit 1993 mit dem Thema zugewanderter Patienten in Forschung und Praxis. Sie ist als Gemeinsame Fachliche Leitung der Kliniken für Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie und -psychotherapie Weissenau und Calw tätig und lehrt als Honorarprofessorin an der Universität Ulm.

    Abstract: How do we understand the multitude of faith movements in our post-secular world? Faith and Social Movements explores this question by analyzing the theology and practice as well as the transformation of two discrepant religious movements in contemporary India. The research opens up a conversation between the sociology of religion and social movements. Using a comparative lens, two different movements - a Hindu and an Islamic reform movement - have been studied in ethnographic detail. The book is divided into two parts. The first part dwells on Svadhyaya, a Hindu reform movement, and the second part on the Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic reform movement. Focusing on the internal dynamics of these movements and the 'unintended consequences' of piety, the author argues that it is only by raising new questions vis-à-vis religion, secularity and civil society that their entanglement could be uncovered. This book aims to raise some of these questions

Felix Papenhagen analysiert grundsätzlich das Verhältnis von jüdischer Religiosität und israelischer Popularmusik.Er versteht die Popularmusik als Seismograph für gesellschaftliche Veränderungen und geht davon aus, dass sich die jüngere Geschichte Israels auch vorwiegend in dessen Musikkultur widerspiegelt. Um dies zu zeigen, führte und analysierte Papenhagen Interviews mit bekannten israelischen Popmusikern sowie deren Liedtexte mit dem Ziel, Erkenntnisse über ihr Verständnis von religiösen Motiven zu gewinnen. Dabei lässt er den Einfluss und die Bedeutung von Musik und Religion für die Musiker selbst in seiner Analyse nicht außer Acht und geht explizit auf die Ambivalenz von säkularem und religiösem Selbstverständnis unterschiedlicher Musikerpersonen ein, welches die Biografie jedes einzelnen mitgeprägt hat

    Abstract: Based on the chance survival of a remarkable cache of documents, India and the Islamic Heartlands recaptures a vanished and forgotten world from the eighteenth century spanning much of today's Middle East and South Asia.     Abstract: Das Thema Religion ist neuerdings im Mainstream israelischer Musik angekommen, obwohl es zuvor belächelt wurde. Felix Papenhagen analysiert grundsätzlich das Verhältnis von jüdischer Religiosität und israelischer Popularmusik.Er versteht die Popularmusik als Seismograph für gesellschaftliche Veränderungen und geht davon aus, dass sich die jüngere Geschichte Israels auch vorwiegend in dessen Musikkultur widerspiegelt. Um dies zu zeigen, führte und analysierte Papenhagen Interviews mit bekannten israelischen Popmusikern sowie deren Liedtexte mit dem Ziel, Erkenntnisse über ihr Verständnis von religiösen Motiven zu gewinnen. Dabei lässt er den Einfluss und die Bedeutung von Musik und Religion für die Musiker selbst in seiner Analyse nicht außer Acht und geht explizit auf die Ambivalenz von säkularem und religiösem Selbstverständnis unterschiedlicher Musikerpersonen ein, welches die Biografie jedes einzelnen mitgeprägt hat.

    Abstract: Imperial Russia's Muslims offers an exploration of social and cultural change among the Muslim communities of Central Eurasia from the late eighteenth century through to the outbreak of the First World War. Drawing from a wealth of Russian and Turkic sources, Mustafa Tuna surveys the roles of Islam, social networks, state interventions, infrastructural changes and the globalization of European modernity in transforming imperial Russia's oldest Muslim community: the Volga-Ural Muslims. Shifting between local, imperial and transregional frameworks, Tuna reveals how the Russian state sought to manage Muslim communities, the ways in which both the state and Muslim society were transformed by European modernity, and the extent to which the long nineteenth century either fused Russia's Muslims and the tsarist state or drew them apart. The book raises questions about imperial governance, diversity, minorities, and Islamic reform, and in doing so proposes a new theoretical model for the study of imperial situations

    Abstract: Muslim Belonging in Secular India surveys the experience of some of India's most prominent Muslim communities in the early postcolonial period. Muslims who remained in India after the Partition of 1947 faced distrust and discrimination, and were consequently compelled to seek new ways of defining their relationship with fellow citizens of India and its governments. Using the forcible integration of the princely state of Hyderabad in 1948 as a case study, Taylor C. Sherman reveals the fragile and contested nature of Muslim belonging in the decade that followed independence. In this context, she demonstrates how Muslim claims to citizenship in Hyderabad contributed to intense debates over the nature of democracy and secularism in independent India. Drawing on detailed new archival research, Dr Sherman provides a thorough and compelling examination of the early governmental policies and popular strategies that have helped to shape the history of Muslims in India since 1947.

    Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.
