    Abstract: "In Nonhuman Witnessing, Michael Richardson argues that we must decenter humans as the subjects of witnessing and expand the concept of witness to encompass nonhuman and machinic perception. Richardson contends that by opening witness to the nonhuman, we can gain a more finely tuned understanding of events in an era of escalating technoscientific war, algorithmic enclosure, and planetary ecological catastrophe. Further, nonhuman witnessing provides a lens for understanding the complex ways in which witnessing is enmeshed with violence itself in the forms of automated warfare which increasingly dominate global political violence. Richardson examines the media specificity of nonhuman witnessing across a varied archive: nuclear testing on First Nations land; digital infrastructures that produce traumas in everyday life; scientific imagery that probes beyond the spectrum of the human sensorium; algorithmic investigative tools; the surveillance of global climate monitoring; and remote warfare enacted through autonomous drones. In bringing together the converging fields of ecology and security, Richardson seeks to foreground the urgent ethical stakes of this convergence"--

Scientific, artistic, and activist epidemic media that make multispecies relations sensible and manageable eschew anthropocentric survival strategies and instead recast global public health crises as biological, social, and ecological catastrophes, pushing us towards a multispecies politics of health. Ghosh trains her analytic gaze on these mediations as expressed in the collection and analysis of blood samples as a form of viral media; the geospatialization of data that track viral hosts like wild primates; and the use of multisensory images to trace fluctuations in viral mutations. Studying how epidemic media inscribe, store, and transmit multispecies relations attunes us to the anthropogenic drivers of pathogenicity like deforestation or illegal wildlife trading and the vulnerabilities of diseases that arise from socioeconomic inequities and biopolitical neglect"--

    Abstract: Die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG), eine der erfolgreichsten Forschungsinstitutionen weltweit, steht exemplarisch für das stark von Hierarchien und Abhängigkeitsverhältnissen geprägte deutsche Wissenschaftssystem. Die Studie analysiert ihren soziokulturellen und strukturellen Wandlungsprozess unter Genderaspekten in den ersten fünfzig Jahren ihres Bestehens – von intransparenten Wirkungszusammenhängen informeller Netzwerke hin zu einer modernen, an Gleichstellungspolitik orientierten Forschungsinstitution. Dabei werden zwei weibliche Arbeitswelten in der Forschungsgesellschaft kultur- und wissenschaftshistorisch untersucht: die Wissenschaft, zu der lange Zeit nur sehr wenige Frauen Zugang hatten, und das "Vorzimmer", in dem die meisten Frauen gearbeitet haben. Was hat weibliche Wissenschaftskarrieren in der MPG befördert, was behindert und welche Rolle spielte dabei das "Harnack-Prinzip", das MPG-eigene Strukturprinzip der persönlichkeitszentrierten Forschungsorganisation? Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf den gleichstellungspolitischen Aushandlungsprozessen, die Ende der 1980er begannen und dazu beigetragen haben, die tradierte Geschlechterordnung der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft aufzubrechen und dort einen Kulturwandel herbeizuführen.

    Abstract: Wissenschaftsdiplomatie gilt neuerdings als Hoffnungsträger in der Bewältigung der globalen Herausforderungen der internationalen Politik. Zugleich rückt das Zusammenspiel von Wissenschaft und Diplomatie während des Kalten Krieges in den Fokus der Wissenschaftsgeschichte. Die Max-Planck-Gesellschaft verfolgte hier eine eigene Agenda. Nach der verbrecherischen Teilhabe ihrer Vorgängerin, der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft, an der NS-Expansions- und Vernichtungspolitik drängte es sie zwar zurück in die internationalen Scientific Communities, aber nicht auf die internationale politische Bühne. Die Studie untersucht, wie sich die MPG im Feld der internationalen Politik positionierte, wann sie mit der Außenpolitik der Bundesrepublik kooperierte, wann sie sich davon abgrenzte und wie sie ihre Rollen als nationaler, europäischer und globaler wissenschaftspolitischer Akteur kombinierte.

To this development, Horn, or The Counterside of Media responds by considering a substance and surface that is an exemplary "medium."     Abstract: This comparative and multi-level study of state responses is confronted with huge complexity. Almost all existing theoretical and methodological approaches -such as secularism (including multiple secularisms or post-secularism)- do not take these complexities seriously into account, focusing on one concept only (wrong Leitdifferenz). They neglect different meanings of terms for agents in the field and they neglect the importance of different levels of governance, times, issues and minorities. This study, however, highlights minimally necessary complexity without drowning in this complexity. It draws clear conceptual, theoretical and methodological lessons, also in a broader sense for the study of governance of religious and cultural diversity and for the governance of migrations. Van den Breemer’s fascinating study of the religious governance of cemeteries by secular state institutions proves that cemeteries have become a privileged site to observe empirically the various ways in which the dual accommodation of religious-secular and multi-religious diversity takes place in today’s post-secular Western European societies.     Abstract: "Saturation shows how underwater points of view have much to teach us about the nature of objectivity, teaching us to look for the ways that a terrestrial bias appears in the ways we speak about and orient to the world. The volume takes the ocean as a vital starting place from which to develop a method of milieu-specific analysis, calling attention to the differences between perceptual environments and how we think within and through them as embodied observers. Through discussions of science fiction literature and visual media, Saturation shows that attending to the ocean is just the beginning of developing a broader sensitivity to the role of milieu in the fields of media studies, literary studies, science and technology studies, and the environmental humanities.     Abstract: Immer mehr Menschen in der Schweiz praktizieren Yoga, glauben an eine Wiedergeburt und lassen sich komplementärmedizinisch behandeln. Barbara Zeugin untersucht, wie sich dieser religiöse Wandel auf die Begleitung am Lebensende auswirkt Insofern alternative Formen von Religion in der Schweiz zunehmen, ist es nicht erstaunlich, wenn in der Begleitung am Lebensende auch alternativ-religiöse Praktiken und alternative Heilverfahren sowie die entsprechenden Rationalisierungen immer mehr an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Rekonstruktion einer solchen, als alternativ aufgefassten Sterbebegleitungspraxis führte die Religionswissenschaftlerin erstens in ein Hospiz für schwer Kranke und Sterbende und zweitens in ein anthroposophisch-medizinisches Spital, wo sie beobachtend und fragend den folgenden Fragen nachging: Welche alternativ-religiösen Handlungsformen und Rationalisierungen spielen in der Begleitung am Lebensende eine Rolle? Welche Bedeutung wird alternativen Heilpraktiken zugeschrieben? Wie sieht die konkrete Begleitungspraxis aus? Und worin besteht letztlich die Alternativität dieser Praxis resp. wie verhält sich diese zum Selbstanspruch der Palliative Care, die schwer Kranken und Sterbenden auch spirituell zu begleiten?

    Abstract: Exodus 1-2 erzählt von der Unterdrückung der Hebräer in Ägypten und der Geburt der künftigen Retters Mose. Christliche und jüdische Ausleger in der Spätantike interpretierten diesen Text aus ihrer je spezifischen Perspektive, als Teil ihrer religiösen Gemeinschaft. Sie gehen mit teils gemeinsamen, teils unterschiedlichen Voraussetzungen, Hermeneutiken und Methoden an der Text heran. Im Hintergrund stehen immer die religiöse Praxis und Lehre der eigenen religiösen Gemeinschaft. Dabei zeigen sich Prozesse der Rezeption ebenso wie Ablehnung und Abgrenzung. Besonders die christliche Schriftauslegung lässt vielfach Polemik gegen das Judentum erkennen, die sich durch die Jahrhunderte weiter fortgesetzt hat. Dennoch finden sich auch zahlreiche Berührungspunkte und gemeinsame Motive, die immer wiederkehren – neben spezifisch jüdischen und christlichen Traditionen.     Abstract: Orthodoxe Christen aus Äthiopien und europäische Protestanten bildeten bereits seit dem Zeitalter der Reformation ein Beziehungsgeflecht. Diese Konfessionen beeinflussten sich gegenseitig und bedingten sich auf diese Weise in ihrem historischen Werden mit. Das Werk erschließt erstmals die vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen von äthiopisch-orthodoxem Christentum und europäischem Protestantismus, sodass die vermeintliche Selbstverständlichkeit der auch wissenschaftlichen Abgrenzung dieser beiden Varianten in Frage gestellt wird, indem der Zeitraum vom 16. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert zum Forschungsgegenstand gemacht wird.Dieser Beitrag bietet einen neuen Blick auf die Kirchengeschichte der Neuzeit und zeigt, auf welche Weise konfessionell und kulturell divergente Varianten des Christentums Kontinent übergreifend miteinander verknüpft waren. Er leistet einen grundlegenden Beitrag zur Geschichte des globalen Christentums und der Interkulturellen Theologie.

    Abstract: "WRITING ANTHROPOLOGY gathers fifty three essays on writing from leading anthropologists on their approach to writing and its current practice in the field. In the past several decades, as anthropologists have grappled with questions of how to ethically portray their subjects, ethnographic writing styles have also changed from a detached, objective voice to one that is more humanistic and self-reflexive. To explore these changes in writing styles and approaches, Carole McGranahan curated a series for the blog Savage Minds: Notes and Queries in Anthropology on the craft of writing and anthropology. This anthology collects expanded versions of these essays, as well as new additions, and raises wide-ranging questions about what it means to write ethnographically. The book is divided into ten sections: Ruminations, Writing Ideas, Telling Stories, On Responsibility, The Urgency of Now, Writing With, Writing Against, Academic Authors, Ethnographic Genres, Becoming and Belonging, and Writing and Knowing.     Abstract: We live in an increasingly pluralized world. This sociological reality has become the irreversible destiny of humankind. Even once religiously homogeneous societies are becoming increasingly diverse. Religious freedom is modernity's most profound if sometimes forgotten answer to the resulting social pressures, but the tide of pluralization threatens to overwhelm that freedom's stabilizing force. Religion, Pluralism, and Reconciling Difference is aimed at exploring differing ways of grappling with the resulting tensions, and then asking, will the tensions ultimately yield poisonous polarization that erodes all hope of meaningful community? Or can the tradition and the institutions protecting freedom of religion or belief be developed and applied in ways that (still) foster productive interactions, stability, and peace? This volume brings together vital and thoughtful contributions treating aspects of these mounting worldwide tensions concerning the relationship between religious diversity and social harmony. The first section explores controversies surrounding religious pluralism from different starting points, including religious, political, and legal standpoints. The second section examines different geographical perspectives on pluralism. Experts from North and South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East address these issues and suggest not only how social institutions can reduce tensions, but also how religious pluralism itself can bolster needed civil society.

In this book, black feminist critic Ann duCille combines cultural critique with personal reflections on growing up with the new medium of TV to examine how televisual representations of African Americans have changed over the last sixty years.     Abstract: One can hardly exaggerate the importance of the church councils in the 5th and 6th centuries. They provide us with great insights into the situation in the late Roman Empire and particularly into the role of the Church at that time. Because of the rich source materials, the dramatic course it took and its overall historical relevance, the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451) is one of the most important events of that period. The decrees of this council led to major upheavals in the Church which continue to this very day. Hagit Amirav presents the first study on the social dynamics and various roles played by the stakeholders of this council, the power plays of the imperial representatives and the bishops, their actions and statements designed to further a consensus. At the centre of this analysis lies Marcian in his dual role as Emperor of the East Roman Empire as well as a central figure in the Church

    Abstract: Sex Scene suggests that what we have come to understand as the sexual revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s was actually a media revolution. In lively essays, the contributors examine a range of mass media-film and television, recorded sound, and publishing-that provide evidence of the circulation of sex in the public sphere, from the mainstream to the fringe. They discuss art films such as I am Curious (Yellow), mainstream movies including Midnight Cowboy, sexploitation films such as Mantis in Lace, the emergence of erotic film festivals and of gay pornography, the use of multimedia in sex education, and the sexual innuendo of The Love Boat. Scholars of cultural studies, history, and media studies, the contributors bring shared concerns to their diverse topics. They highlight the increasingly fluid divide between public and private, the rise of consumer and therapeutic cultures, and the relationship between identity politics and individual rights.     Abstract: Dieses Buch ist das Standardwerk zur Geschichte von Religion und Frömmigkeit in Deutschland seit 1945.In vielen Teilen der Welt war und ist das soziale Leben von religiösen Vorstellungen durchtränkt. In Westeuropa wie auch in Deutschland verhält es sich nicht mehr so: Seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs erleben wir einen beispiellosen Traditionsbruch innerhalb der christlichen Konfessionen. Während die unmittelbare Nachkriegszeit noch von der Idee einer umfassenden Rechristianisierung geprägt war, hat sich diese Vorstellung wenige Jahrzehnte später verflüchtigt. Die individuelle Frömmigkeitspraxis schwindet, die Gotteshäuser werden leerer. Hinzu kommt, dass sich auch die christlichen Kirchen selbst in dieser Transformation umfassend gewandelt haben: Der strafende Gott hat sich allmählich zum liebenden Vater entwickelt, die Christenlehre zum Religions- und Ethikunterricht. Diese Entwicklung betrifft nicht nur die Kirchen selbst, sondern verändert auch die politische Kultur insgesamt: Idealbilder und Praxis von Kernbereichen des gesellschaftlichen Lebens wie Familie, Sexualität, Bildung, aber auch politische Entwürfe sind immer weniger christlich geprägt, so dass der gesellschaftliche und politische Einfluss der Kirchen abnimmt. Dennoch aber ist die Vorstellung vom Verschwinden der Religion nicht haltbar. Ein populärreligiöser Markt boomt, spirituelle Ratgeber werden als Lebenshelfer konsultiert, Religionsvertreter als Berater in Fragen der letzten Dinge um ihre Meinung gebeten. Wie lassen sich die verschiedenen Ebenen dieses Wandels erklären? Welche Konsequenzen zeitigt er für die religiösen Gemeinschaften, vor allem aber für unser Gemeinwesen insgesamt? Und: In welche Richtung wird sich das religiöse Feld zukünftig entwickeln? Diese Fragen beantwortet Thomas Großbölting in seiner Geschichte des Christentums in Deutschland von 1945 bis heute.

    Abstract: "Focusing on contemporary Tibetan Buddhist revivals in the Tibetan regions of the Sichuan and Qinghai Provinces in China, this book explores the intricate entanglements of the Buddhist revivals with cultural identity, state ideology, and popular imagination of Tibetan Buddhist spirituality in contemporary China. In turn, the author explores the broader socio-cultural implications of such revivals. Based on detailed cross-regional ethnographic work, the book demonstrates that the revival of Tibetan Buddhism in contemporary China is intimately bound with both the affirming and negating forces of globalization, modernity, and politics of religion, indigenous identity reclamation, and the market economy. The analysis highlights the multidimensionality of Tibetan Buddhism in relation to different religious, cultural, and political constituencies of China. By recognizing the greater contexts of China's politics of religion and of the global status of Tibetan Buddhism, this book presents an argument that the revival of Tibetan Buddhism is not an isolated event limited merely to Tibetan regions; instead, it is a result of the intersection of both local and global transformative changes. The book is a useful contribution to students and scholars of Asian religion and Chinese studies"--

    Abstract: Major change came to Argentina during the first decades of the twentieth century. Following the mass influx of European immigrants to the country during the beginning of the century, a truly national culture was produced through mass media, facilitating the assimilation of immigrants and their descendants. New forms of media emerged, such as radio and cinema, as did new forms of entertainment, such as tango songs, films, and radio theater. Yet despite the unifying effect of popular culture, the nation remained divided, and, if anything, more so in 1950 than in 1910. This book argues that the key to understanding this paradox lies in a reassessment of the mass culture of the 1920s and 1930s. With a focus on film and radio in and around Buenos Aires, the locus of production as well as much of the market consumption, Karush shows how integration and class fractures occurred simultaneously in a short span of the country's history. He brings together the usually separated subjects of radio and cinema to show how they can combine to gauge a larger cultural and political environment and shed light on class distinctions. The book contributes to an ongoing discussion of the relationship between power and mass culture. It will be of interest to scholars of cultural history and urban studies and those interested in Latin American history and culture.
