    Abstract: One morning, several men, who are making hardwood arrowheads for unfeathered arrows while they talk or sing, are sitting in front of the men's house. They use stone adzes, knives, the incisors of a rodent as well as rough plant leaves for tools.

    Abstract: Drei unterschiedliche Anwendungen der Maltechnik bei den Kwoma: das Malen in der freien Fläche, d. h. auf den flachgepreßten Basisteilen von Blattstengeln der Sagopalme, das Bemalen eines in Kerbschnitt-Technik verzierten Holzschildes und das Bemalen einer dreidimensionalen Schnitzerei eines Zierbalkens für das Männerhaus. Es malen führende Männer und Künstler allein, zu zweit oder zusammen mit jüngeren.
    Abstract: The film shows three different ways in which the Kwoma employ painting techniques: painting on flat surfaces, i.e. the flattened bases of sago-palm leaf-stems, chip-carved wooden shields and three-dimensional carvings. The painters are respected men and artists, who will be seen working alone, in pairs and with younger men.

    Abstract: Anläßlich des 10jährigen Bestandesjubiläums des Flößermuseums Weyer-Kastenreith wird die Herstellung eines Ennsfloßes nach überlieferter Methode von der Schlägerung über die Holzbringung bis zum Bau des Floßes selbst sowie die Floßfahrt dargestellt.
    Abstract: In 1985 the Museum of Rafts at Weyer celebrates its tenth anniversary. On this occasion an Enns raft is built by the traditional method from pine trunks. Former raftsmen and woodcutters show for the last time their ability. The film presents all the stages of the work, from the woodcutting, disbranching, and decorating over the wood haulage to the fastening together of the trunks.

    Abstract: In Abwesenheit der Männer tragen Frauen ein verendetes Schwein zum Schlachteplatz, zerlegen es mit einem Bambusmesser, sengen die Borsten an, stellen Würste her. Ein zweites Schwein wird gebracht und verarbeitet. Fleisch und Würste werden zusammen mit Gemüse in zwei Erdöfen gegart. Ab und zu erscheinen Männer, die sich wegen Tabuvorschriften im Walde aufhalten, um Ratschläge zu erteilen. Die Frauen beklagen den Verlust der Schweine und singen Klagelieder.
    Abstract: In the absence of men, women carry a dead pig to the cutting place, dissecte it using a bamboo knife, singe the bristles and make sausages. A second pig is brought and processed. Together with vegetable, meat and sausages are cooked in two earth ovens. Men, required to stay in the wood by taboo rules, appear off and on to give advice. The women lament and bewail the death of the pigs.

    Abstract: Ausschnitt aus einem mehrtägigen Besuchsfest in Munggona (s. Film E 2803). In der Nacht, bevor die Gäste eintreffen, tanzen Männer in Kreisformation und singen dazu. Der Vortänzer löst den Kreis auf, indem er die Tänzer in einer Spiralform in der Mitte zusammenführt. Anschließend führt der letzte Tänzer die Tanzschlange in die Kreisformation zurück. Einige Frauen tanzen am Rande des Dorfplatzes in Reihenformation.
    Abstract: Excerpt from a visiting feast, which lasted several days, in Munggona (see Film E 2803). In the night before the guests arrive, men dance in a circular formation and sing in accompaniment. The leading dancer breaks up the circle by bringing the dancers together in the centre in a spiral shape. Subsequently, the last dancer guides the dance line back into the circular formation. Several women dance at the margin of the village plaza in a row formation.

    Abstract: Nach der Vorbesprechung im November besuchen die Sternsinger in der Vorweihnachtszeit alteingessene, aber auch neue Hildesheimer Geschäfte. Sie singen dort das Dreikönigslied in gekürzter Form. In Familien und bei besonderen Anlässen werden sie eingeladen, so von der Familie Hennis und der Schützengesellschaft von 1367, wo sie das Dreikönigslied ausführlich und außerdem weitere Lieder vortragen.
    Abstract: In the time preceding Christmas the Carol singers arrange their visits with old customers and new businesses in Hildesheim. Their repertoire is now shortened, however they occasionally sing complete works, as shown upon their invitation to Hennis family.

    Abstract: Drei Männer der Handwerkerfamilie Pantelakis aus Pyrgos demonstrieren an einer Hauswand die Technik der Kratzputzmalerei (Xista). Weiße Kalkfarbe wird auf den noch feuchten Putz aufgetragen und gleichmäßig verstrichen. Bevor Farbe und Putz trocknen, wird mit Hilfe von Gabeln und Nägeln durch die Kalkschicht hindurch die Oberfläche des Putzes an vorgezeichneten Stellen abgekratzt. Zurück bleibt eine schwarzweiß ornamentierte Fläche.
    Abstract: Three men from Pyrgos, members of the Pantelakis craftsmen family, demonstrate the technique of sgraffito (Xista) on the wall of a house. Whitewash is spread on the moist plaster and brushed evenly over the surface. Before whitewash and plaster dry, the plaster surface, with forks and nails, is scratched through the whitewash in marked places. The result is a black and white ornament on the wall.

    Abstract: Mehrere Varianten der spontan entwickelten Tänze. Mädchen üben die Schrittfolge, das Zuwerfen und Fangen des Balles sowie das Singen und Klatschen des Tanzrhythmus. Dem Spiel der Mädchen gesellen sich Frauen hinzu, und es entwickelt sich ein perfekter Spieltanz mit Rhythmusvarianten.
    Abstract: Several variants of a melon-game dance which developed spontaneously are documented. Two girls exercise the game. They attract several adult women who join in, and a perfect melonball dance developes. Women standing behind each other form a circle. One woman holding a melon leaves the circles to perform a variety of figures and finally throws the melon to the woman following her while she returns to the circle of clapping and chanting women. The sequence of events ends with a round dance. The women form a circle and while the group dances a melon passes from one dancer to the other. Each dancer throws the melon backwards over her shoulder to the dancer following her.

    Abstract: Während einer Initiation trägt ein Mann aus Japanaut Modelliermasse auf einen Schädel auf. Von einem Baum im Wald holt er Baumsaft. Die Modelliermasse mischt er aus Erde, Baumsaft und gebranntem Kalk. Dann befestigt er am Schädel Kauri-Schneckengehäuse, Conus-Schneckenböden und Menschenhaare. Anschließend wird der Schädel mit schwarzer, gelber und roter Farbe bemalt.
    Abstract: During an initiation ceremony a man modells on a skull a mixture of clay. He taps a tree for some tree-sap. The mixture on the skull consists of earth, tree-sap, and burned chalk. Different shells like cowrie shells and conus shells and human hair fixed on the skull. Finally he paints the overmodelled skull with black, yellow and red.

Salap verziert einen Ohrpflock, indem er mit dem Schneidezahn eines Nagetieres Verzierungen in den Bambus kratzt. Die Verzierungen bestreicht er mit Hautfett, um die Musterung hervortreten zu lassen. Er steckt den Ohrpflock in sein linkes Ohrläppchen. Während er arbeitet, spielt ein anderer Mann auf einer Maultrommel.
    Abstract: Several boys and men are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam/Imarin. Salap is decorating an ear peg by scratching decorations in the bamboo with a rodent incisor. He smears dermal fat into the decorations so that the pattern will stand out. He sticks the ear peg into his left ear lobe. While he is working, another man is playing a Jew's harp.

    Abstract: Im Dorf Dorong starb eine 80jährige Frau, die als Priesterin andere Frauen ausgebildet hat. Nach der Aufbahrung treffen Trauergäste ein. Frauen aus der Verwandtschaft halten Trauerwache und singen Klagelieder. Zwei Priesterinnen führen die Totenzeremonien durch. Am zweiten Tag wird die Tote in einen Einbaumsarg gelegt, der fest verschlossen wird. Am dritten Tag wird sie auf dem Friedhof beerdigt.
    Abstract: In Dorong village, near Tamiang, an eighty-year-old woman has died. She was a priestess (wadian), responsible also for the training of other women. The film presents the exposure of the corpse, the arrival of the mourners, and the ceremonies connected with this event. The ceremonies are performed by two priestesses, one having the function of a teacher. The second day the corpse is laid in the coffin, the third day the burial takes place in the cemetery.

    Abstract: Zur Erhaltung der nach dem II. Weltkrieg gegründeten Glashütte in Wolfach/Schwarzwald leistet auch der Fremdenverkehr einen Beitrag. Nach einem "Schaublasen" für Touristen zeigt der Film das Drechseln einer Holzform, Beschicken des Ofens mit Schmelzgut, das Herstellen von Weingläsern, das Auswechseln eines Schmelzhafens, das aufwendige Verfahren bei der Herstellung von Überfanggläsern sowie Schliff und Qualitätskontrolle. Die einzelnen Arbeitsschritte werden von den Betroffenen selbst erläutert.
    Abstract: Tourism is a factor guaranteeing the existence of the glassworks at Wolfach/Black Forest, founded after World War II. After an "exhibition blowing" for tourists, the film shows the turning of a wooden mould, the putting of the melting-charge into the furnace, the making of wineglasses, the exchange of a glasshouse pot, the complicated manufacture of cover glasses, the graving, and the final check. The different operations are explained by the workers.

    Abstract: Den Höhepunkt des brauchtümlichen Faschingsgeschehens im Salinenort Ebensee bildet der "Fetzenzug". Vornehmlich männliche Teilnehmer, als alte, häßliche, zerlumpte Weiber verkleidet, ziehen, von Herolden, Prinzenpaar, Pritschenmeistern und Blasmusikkapelle begleitet, am Nachmittag des Faschingsmontages durch den Ort. Anschließend an den Umzug lassen die "Fetzen" ihrer Ausgelassenheit in den Straßen, den Wirtshäusern und beim Ball im Rathaus freien Lauf.
    Abstract: On carnival's monday afternoon a lot of ugly masked "Hutzen" and "Fetzen" have a meeting in the pub "Langbathtal" to march together through the village. They splash and beset the spectators. Subsequent they roam the pubs. In the evening there is a "Fetzenball" in the town hall.

    Abstract: In a family-owned workshop the chamois-dressing with blubber of 150-160 deer-; chamois- and roe-skins is done for work into leather-dresses. Traditional tools (scraping-wood, scraping-knife) are still in use. Tub, fulling-mill and a wringing-machine are run by waterpower. Just partly there are used more modern equipments (stretching-machine, pumice-machine) as well as electricity.

Mit ihm singt, den Tänzern gegenüberstehend, eine durch ihre Schärpe als "beste Sängerin" gekennzeichnete junge Frau. - Am nächsten Tag findet der gleiche Tanz mit einem anderen Sänger statt.
    Abstract: On the central place of the village the men perform a stepping dance, led by the singing and rattling leader of the ceremonies. He is accompanied by the singing of a young woman, facing the men, distinguished by a scarf as "best singer". - The next day the same dance is performed with a different singer.

    Abstract: Zwei große, neugebaute Kanus sollen in einem Singfest geweiht werden. Tags zuvor werden die Memorierstäbe für die Liederreihen vorbereitet: aufgesteckte Figuren werden fertiggeschnitzt und bemalt. Die geschmückten Kanus werden auf das Ufer und zum Männerhaus gezogen. Bei dem Fest wechseln auf einer Schlitztrommel geschlagene kultische Rhythmen mit Gesängen. Am Memorierstab wird der Fortgang der Liederreihe deutlich. Wegen eines Großfeuers, bei dem mehrere Wohnhäuser abbrennen, wird das Fest vorzeitig abgebrochen.
    Abstract: The day before the feast sticks for memorizing the name songs are prepared. The decorated canoes are pulled to the shore and up into the men's house. At the feast name songs are presented which relate to the respective clan mythology. A big fire of several houses puts an end to the feast.

Afterwards the men, who all are already healers (sapori), blow the drug into each other's nostrils. They get into trance, sing, dance, and comment their visions. Amongst others they describe the appearance of ghosts to their companions, who in turn comment on it.

    Abstract: Aus einem abendlichen Scherztanz, an dem Männer, Frauen und Kinder teilnehmen, entwickelt sich ein Tranceritual, das bis zum frühen Morgen dauert: Extraktionszauber durch Handauflegen, Zusammenbrechen und Wiedererweckung der Trancetänzer.
    Abstract: Spontaneous trance ritual which developed on April 4th 1972 around 10 p.m. at Bere from a joking dance, in which women and men participated as dancers. The dance changed into a trance dance which lasted with pauses till the next morning. The men dance around the women, who sit on the ground clapping the dance-rhythm with their hands and singing. The dancers touch the women with their palms in an attempt to extract sickness and evil from their bodies. They especially takes care of a woman and her child who is obviosly sick. They kneel down in front of her and touch her while singing. As a precaution other women are also touched. Several dancers are affected by trance and collapse. Women and men attempt to receie them by the aid of smoke, water and massage. The expressions of the men in trance, particularly their suffering and fighting agonies are highly impressive.

    Abstract: Two men, Yoresiyawe the highest-ranking healer (sapori) and Kasiwe implant spirits into a man named Uraewe, who is already healer, but who wants to achieve perfection. The healers approach Uraewe dancing and singing, carrying the spirits with them and implanting them with pantomimic gestures. After this a man from another village, Kosisiwe, who is aspirant healer, undergoes a similar treatment and instruction. This time Yoresiyawe is assisted by the headman. Finally the aspirant dances a rehearsal hekuramou, watched by the other healers of the village who comment and encourage his performance.

    Abstract: The highest-ranking healer (sapori) Yoresiyawe blows the sniffing drug yopo into the nostrils of two men. Then he takes the drug himself and achieves trance. With the help of other healers he instructs first a man who is already healer, and later another one who is not yet initiated. Chanting and dancing the healers carry the spirits and insert them with much pantomimic gesture into the bodies of their pupils. The healers verbalize their experience and visions and engage on dialogues with others.

    Abstract: Der Uhrenschildmaler Karl Straub (geb. 1892) stellt ein Uhrenschild mit dem traditionellen Rosenmuster im Bogenfeld her: Eine Sperrholzplatte wird weiß grundiert, mit Hilfe einer Pappschablone mit schwarzem Zifferblatt versehen und aus freier Hand mit farbigen Blumenmotiven bemalt.
    Abstract: Karl Straub (born 1892) is one of the last painters of clockfaces in the Black Forest. The film shows him during his work, in this way it is possible to duplicate the completion of a clockface. In the beginning the panel gets its priming, then the dail is formed and following the empty spaces are decorated. Typical for clocks from the region around Furtwangen is the rose in the arc, for which decoration Karl Straub devotes most of his attention. Apart from the painting the film also imparts how the paint is used and which tools the painter needs.

    Abstract: In der Kleinstadt Hala (Provinz Sind) werden bemalte, glasierte Keramikfliesen nach traditionellen Techniken erzeugt. Der Film dokumentiert den kompletten Produktionsprozeß in den Werkstätten eines Fliesenerzeugers ("kashigar"). Die bunte Baukeramik mit ihren floral-vegetativen Dekormotiven läßt sich an den Fliesenfassaden der Moscheen und Mausoleen des Sind bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen.
    Abstract: In the small town Hala in the Province of Sind traditional techniques in the manufacturing of painted glazed tiles have been preserved. The documentary film contains all working processes in a tile maker's ("kashigar") workshop. In Sind, the coloured tile decoration with its floral patterns - displayed on the walls of mosques and tombs - can be dated back to the 16th century.

    Abstract: Spontaneous trance dance which developed around 10 p.m. at Bere and which lasted with pauses till the next morning. The film shows the dancing around the women sitting on the ground clapping the rhythm and singing. The dancers extract the evil by touching the women with the palm. One dancer is repeatedly affected by trance. The expression of his suffering for the good of the group is impressive, particularly during the fits of trance in the early morning. Helpers endeavour by massage, washing his face and chest and giving him water to drink.

    Abstract: In der Marktgemeinde Schwarzenberg wie auch in anderen Pfarren des Bregenzerwaldes ist es Brauch, daß zu bestimmten Anlässen als Zeichen der Trauer und des Totengedenkens von jeweils einer Frau einer Großfamilie zur allgemein üblichen Sonntags- und Feiertagstracht die "Leidstucha" und der "Leidmantel" getragen werden. Der Film zeigt die Einbindung dieser besonderen Trauertracht in die brauchmäßige Begehung des ortsüblichen Totengedächtnisses an den Familien-"Jahrtagen" oder "-Jahrzeiten", wobei der zeitliche Handlungsablauf und der soziale Kontext desselben im Vordergrund des Interesses stehen.
    Abstract: In the market-town of Schwarzenberg, as in other parishes of the Bregenzerwald, it is still the custom that on certain occasions and as a sign of mourning and remembrance of the dead, a woman from each family will wear, in addition to the usual costume for Sundays, a "mourning head-scarf" and "mourning-cape". The film stresses how this special outfit is used during the course of these remembrances on so-called "Family Anniversaries", and its social context.

    Abstract: Ein 5,67 m langer Schwarzföhrenstamm wird von Zimmerleuten teils mit althergebrachten Geräten (Zimmermannsschnur, Breitbeil, Handhobel, Reifmesser, Bohrer), teils mit modernen Maschinen (Motorsäge, Handhobelmaschine) und teils mit improvisierten Behelfen (Stangenzirkel) als Wellbaum zugerichtet. Nachdem der schmiedeeiserne Anker eingesetzt worden ist und hierauf die Spannringe aufgezogen worden sind, wird dieser Grindlbaum in die Sägemühle beim Waldbauernmuseum in Gutenstein eingebaut.     Abstract: A 5,67 m long trunk of a black pine is processed into an axle-tree by traditional tools ( carpenter's twine, broad hatchet, plane, drawknife, auger), simple machinery (power-saw, hand-planer) and improvised tools (beam compasses). After the wrought-iron tie is fitted in place the hoops are tilted on. Then the axle-tree is fitted into saw-mill of the Waldbauern-Museum in Gutenstein.     Abstract: The small town Hala in the Province of Sind is a place, where extraordinary traditional ceramic techniques - as elsewhere being threatened by extinction - have been preserved. This refers especially to the products of the village potters ("khumbar"). The film shows the typical regional pottery techniques of earthenware represented completely in the manufacture of the drinking water storage vessels "matto" and "dilla". The detailed documentation contains all working processes.

A resist paste is applied to the material, which is dyed in an indigo vat and then dried. The reserve is removed, and after another drying it is smoothed and shined with a mangle. It is then sold in the market.

    Abstract: Nach der Frühjahrswanderung erhalten die Korbvölker der Imkerei Georg Klindworth in Langenfelde bei Sittensen auf den heimischen Außenständen künstliche Futtergaben. Für die Schwarmzeit der Bienen werden die Imkergerätschaften hergerichtet: Schwarmfangbeutel werden kontrolliert und Teile für Versandkisten angefertigt; Körbe werden repariert, mit Leitwachsstreifen und hölzernen Speilen versehen und neu mit Kuhdung abgedichtet.
    Abstract: After first flowering the bees are collected and returned to the premises of beekeeper Georg Klindworth (Langenfelde bei Sittensen) where they receive artificial food. Tools are inspected and repaired in preparation for swarming. Nets, boxes for sending the animals, basket hives are repaired and sealed in cow dung.

Im Osttiroler Bergdorf Kals am Großglockner waren solche Hüte bis vor wenigen Jahrzehnten Teil der weiblichen Alltags- und Arbeitskleidung.

    Abstract: Die mehrwöchige Schwarmzeit der Heidebienen beginnt Anfang Juni mit dem Abgehen der Vorschwärme. In der Imkerei Georg Klindworth in Langenfelde bei Sittensen werden die schwarmbereiten Korbvölker in dem am Gehöft gelegenen Bienenstand gesammelt. Sobald ein Vorschwarm mit der alten Königin den Korb verläßt, fängt der Imker ihn in einem vorgesteckten Schwarmfangbeutel ein. Nachdem die Bienen im Beutel eine Schwarmtraube gebildet haben, werden die Vorschwärme zum Verkauf in Versandkisten gefüllt.
    Abstract: Swarming time for the bees on the heath lands starts an the beginning of june and lasts several weeks. Instantly a pre-swarm with the old queen leaves the hive they are caught in a net. When the bees in the bag have made a stable ball, they are placed in boxes and sent for sale.

    Abstract: Männer bewirtschaften das Gartenland unterhalb von Malingdam wieder, das mehrere Jahre zum Regenerieren brachgelegen hat: Niederschlagen der Sekundärvegetation, Terrassieren mit Grabstock (Hochbeetbau), Pflanzen von Stecklingen, Errichten eines Zaunes. Nach 22 Arbeitstagen ist die Arbeit abgeschlossen.
    Abstract: After several years of fallow the garden area below Malingdam is cultivated again. After chopping down the secondary vegetation, the slope is terraced with the digging stick and with the hands. The beds are planted with sweet potato cuttings and taro sprouts. The work is done individually: every man prepares and cultivates "his" plot of ground owned by the community.

    Abstract: Die bunt geschmückten Partner sitzen paarweise nebeneinander in einer Hütte; im Hintergrund singen Männer Liebeslieder. Zu Beginn der etwa 5 Minuten dauernden Tänze wiegt der Werbende Oberkörper und Kopf. Dann wendet er sich seiner Partnerin zu, die sich ebenfalls zu wiegen beginnt. Es kommt zu Stirn- und Nasenreiben. Nach zweimaligem Nasenreiben verbeugen sich die Tanzpartner tief parallel zueinander, dann reiben sie wieder zweimal ihre Nasen und so fort in stetem Rhythmus, der nicht von der Musik bestimmt wird.
    Abstract: The courtship dance of the Medlpa contains a stylized nose rubbing and contact of the cheeks. The participants, richly adorned, are sitting in couples side by side in a hut, in the background men are singing love-songs. At the beginning of the dances, which each have a length of about 5 minutes, the man sways his upper body and his head, then he turns to his female partner who also starts to sway. Forehead and nose rubbing take place. Afte a second nose rubbing the partners make a deep bow towards each other, then they rub their noses twice again, and so forth, in a steady rhythm not determined by the music.

Bei wöchentlichen Kontrollgängen entfernt der Imker Drohnenbau und vorzeitige Weiselzellen und gleicht die Volksstärke aus.
