    Kurzfassung: Konflikte scheinen heute gleichbedeutend mit Gewalt und Krieg. Doch Konflikte sind vielschichtig: Sie können sowohl zur Integration von Gesellschaften beitragen als auch diese zerbrechen. Die Anthropologie der Konflikte, zu der Georg Elwert weiterführende Thesen beigetragen hat, beleuchtet unterschiedliche Konfliktdynamiken und geht der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen integrative, eskalative oder segregative Institutionen der Konfliktaustragung entstehen - oder wieder zerfallen. Der Band geht davon aus, dass Konfliktformen und soziale Organisation in einem wechselseitigen Zusammenhang stehen. Daher hat die Anthropologie der Konflikte deren verschiedene Formen, ihre kulturelle Codierung wie auch ihre konstitutive Rolle für sozialen Wandel zu untersuchen.

    Kurzfassung: Konflikte scheinen heute gleichbedeutend mit Gewalt und Krieg. Doch Konflikte sind vielschichtig: Sie können sowohl zur Integration von Gesellschaften beitragen als auch diese zerbrechen. Die Anthropologie der Konflikte, zu der Georg Elwert weiterführende Thesen beigetragen hat, beleuchtet unterschiedliche Konfliktdynamiken und geht der Frage nach, unter welchen Bedingungen integrative, eskalative oder segregative Institutionen der Konfliktaustragung entstehen - oder wieder zerfallen.     Kurzfassung: Ohne Frage hat Religion Konjunktur. Einerseits gilt Religion als Ressource von Sinn und spiritueller Erfahrung, andererseits ist sie Konfliktpotential. Zunehmend wird Religion auch zum Gegenstand von visuellen und textlichen Repräsentationen in Museen und Ausstellungen.     Kurzfassung: Main description: Nicht nur Intellektuelle und Künstler zog es im 19. Jahrhundert aus den deutschen Ländern nach Paris. Handwerker und ungelernte Arbeiter stellten den überwältigenden Großteil der etwa 60 000 Mitglieder umfassenden "deutschen Kolonie" um 1870. Straßenkehrer, Lumpensammler und Kanalarbeiter aus Hessen, Erd- und Fabrikarbeiter aus der Pfalz, deutsche und elsässische Dienstmägde, Schreiner, Tischler, Schneider und Schuhmacher aus Baden, Bayern und dem Niederrhein: Sie machten Paris - neben Berlin und Hamburg - zur "dritten deutschen Großstadt". Die Aufsätze des vorliegenden Bandes von jungen deutschen, österreichischen und französischen Historikern rücken erstmalig genau diese Berufsgruppen in den Mittelpunkt ihres Interesses, wobei der zeitliche Schwerpunkt auf der von der Forschung bisher ebenso vernachlässigten zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts liegt. Der Sammelband ist damit ein Vorstoß in noch weitgehend unbekanntes Terrain und will neben ersten Ergebnissen vor allem Anregungen für weitere Forschungen liefern. Artisans et ouvriers non-qualifiés représentaient lécrasante majorité de la "colonie allemande" qui comptait, vers 1870, environ 60.000 personnes. Balayeurs, chiffonniers et égoutiers de Hesse, terrassiers et ouvriers dusine du Palatinat, domestiques allemandes et alsaciennes, menuisiers, ébénistes, tailleurs et cordonniers du pays de Bade, de Bavière et du Rhin inférieur: ils faisaient de Paris la "troisième métropole allemande" après Berlin et Hambourg. Ces catégories dimmigrés, peu étudiées en règle générale, occupent une place centrale dans les contributions quont livrées pour le présent volume quelques jeunes chercheurs allemands, autrichiens et français. La période de la seconde moitié du 19e siècle, jusquici restée dans lombre, fait lobjet dune attention particulière. The essays in Learning Places argue, however, that the post–Cold War era has seen these programs largely degenerate into little more than public relations firms for the areas they research.A tremendous amount of money flows—particularly within the sphere of East Asian studies, the contributors claim—from foreign agencies and governments to U.S. universities to underwrite courses on their histories and societies. In the process, this volume argues, such funds have gone beyond support to the wholesale subsidization of students in graduate programs, threatening the very integrity of research agendas. Native authority has been elevated to a position of primacy; Asian-born academics are presumed to be definitive commentators in Asian studies, for example. Area studies, the contributors believe, has outlived the original reason for its construction. The essays in this volume examine particular topics such as the development of cultural studies and hyphenated studies (such as African-American, Asian-American, Mexican-American) in the context of the failure of area studies, the corporatization of the contemporary university, the prehistory of postcolonial discourse, and the problematic impact of unformulated political goals on international activism.Learning Places points to the necessity, the difficulty, and the possibility in higher education of breaking free from an entrenched Cold War narrative and making the study of a specific area part of the agenda of education generally.     Kurzfassung: In the late nineteenth century, Germans spearheaded a worldwide effort to preserve the material traces of humanity, designing major ethnographic museums and building extensive networks of communication and exchange across the globe. In this groundbreaking study, Glenn Penny explores the appeal of ethnology in Imperial Germany and analyzes the motivations of the scientists who created the ethnographic museums. Penny shows that German ethnologists were not driven by imperialist desires or an interest in legitimating putative biological or racial hierarchies. Overwhelmingly antiracist, they aspired to generate theories about the essential nature of human beings through their museums' collections. They gained support in their efforts from boosters who were enticed by participating in this international science and who used it to promote the cosmopolitan character of their cities and themselves. But these cosmopolitan ideals were eventually overshadowed by the scientists' more modern, professional, and materialist concerns, which dramatically altered the science and its goals. By clarifying German ethnologists' aspirations and focusing on the market and conflicting interest groups, Penny makes important contributions to German history, the history of science, and museum studies

    Kurzfassung: In a rural community in Southern Ethiopia, there are two types of rituals performed by the same people. Historical evidence suggests that one has shown remarkable stability over the years, while the other has undergone massive transformations. External factors are the same, so how is this to be explained? In this 2002 book, Dena Freeman focuses on ethnographical and historical data from the Gamo Highlands of Southern Ethiopia to tackle the question of cultural change and transformation. She uses a comparative perspective and contrasts the continuity in sacrificial rituals with the rapid divergence and differentiation in initiations. Freeman argues that although external change drives internal cultural transformation, the way in which it does is greatly influenced by the structural organization of the cultural systems themselves. This insight leads to a rethinking of the analytic tension between structure and agency that is at the heart of contemporary anthropological theory

    Kurzfassung: Southeast Asia, until the Asian economic crisis of 1997-2000, was a high economic growth area. However, despite the neo-liberal and globalizing logic of capitalism, local conditions and cultures determine that capitalism will spread in ways not entirely consonant with its Western origins. Capitalism is not a free-floating entity -- it is a socially embodied phenomenon that needs to function in various cultural contexts. Consequently, the tension between the universal status that some claim capitalism now occupies in the post-Cold War world and the particularities of the local cultures it enters should be of great concern

    Kurzfassung: „Den volkskundlichen Blick genauer und schärfer zu machen, ohne seine Spezifik und seine Problemorientiertheit einzuschränken, ist die Aufgabe der kommenden Jahre. Diese ist nicht lösbar ohne massenhafte Feldstudien und deren regelmäßige und hartnäckige methodische Reflexion.“ (Utz Jeggle, 1984) Auf 16 Schauplätzen entfaltet sich die Poesie ethnographischer Forschung – in Berührungen, Brechungen und Blockaden. Kulturwissenschaftlerinnen und Kulturwissenschaftler folgen den Wegweisungen ihrer Forschungsfelder von der schwäbischen Provinz bis nach Vietnam, vom Krankenhaus an die Universität, vom Bild zum Körper, vom Internet ins Museum. Sie diskutieren die Potentiale und Problemstellungen methodischer Offenheit und Reflexivität und brechen zu interdisziplinären Grenzgängen auf.

    Kurzfassung: Few challenges to the modern dream of democratic citizenship appear greater than the presence of severe ethnic, religious, and linguistic divisions in society. With their diverse religions and ethnic communities, the Southeast Asian countries of Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia have grappled with this problem since achieving independence after World War II. Each country has on occasion been torn by violence over the proper terms for accommodating pluralism. Until the Asian economic crisis of 1997, however, these nations also enjoyed one of the most sustained economic expansions the non-Western world has ever seen.This timely volume brings together fifteen leading specialists of the region to consider the impact of two generations of nation-building and market-making on pluralism and citizenship in these deeply divided Asian societies. Examining the new face of pluralism from the perspective of markets, politics, gender, and religion, the studies show that each country has developed a strikingly different response to the challenges of citizenship and diversity. The contributors, most of whom come Southeast Asia, pay particular attention to the tension between state and societal approaches to citizenship. They suggest that the achievement of an effectively participatory public sphere in these countries will depend not only on the presence of an independent "civil society," but on a synergy of state and society that nurtures a public culture capable of mediating ethnic, religious, and gender divides.The Politics of Multiculturalism will be of special interest to students of Southeast Asian history and society, anthropologists grappling with questions of citizenship and culture, political scientists studying democracy across cultures, and all readers concerned with the prospects for civility and tolerance in a multicultural world

    Kurzfassung: Over the last decades quite a few studies have been devoted to drinking. Most of these were concerned with alcohol and written by social anthropologists. This book presents multidisciplinary aspects of the ingestion of liquids at large, addressing many of the overt and covert meanings of drinking: from satisfying biological needs to communicating with humans and the hereafter, attempting to reach a differential emotional state or seeking good health and longevity through the ingestion of appropriate beverages. It includes papers from both biological and social scientists and covers a fair range of societies from rural and urban environments, and in continents and countries ranging from Europe, Africa, and Latin America to Malaysia and the Pacific.

Dabei wird deutlich, welche Bereicherung sie für die hiesigen Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften darstellen. Zugleich zeigt sich die Anschlussfähigkeit der Cultural Studies in Deutschland und Österreich an die internationale Diskussion.

    Kurzfassung: One of the great riddles of cultural history is the remarkable parallel that exists between the peoples of Amazonia and Melanesia. Although the two regions are separated by half a world in distance and at least 40,000 years of history, their cultures nonetheless reveal striking similarities in the areas of sex and gender. The contributors illuminate the various ways in which sex and gender are elaborated, obsessed over, and internalized, shaping subjective experiences common to entire cultural regions, and beyond.
