    Abstract: Eine interdisziplinäre Analyse von Aushandlungsprozessen staatlicher Herrschaft am Beispiel des habsburgischen Befestigungsbaus in Galizien nach 1848.Die Revolution von 1848/49 stellte die Habsburgermonarchie vor existentielle Herausforderungen. Nur mit militärischer Gewalt konnte dieser Staat zusammengehalten und die habsburgische Herrschaft im Inneren gesichert werden. Die folgenden Jahre waren gekennzeichnet von einer überragenden Stellung des Militärs und einer umfassenden Modernisierung des habsburgischen Staates.Frank Rochow zeigt an Fallstudien zu Lemberg und Krakau, dass Befestigungsbauten nicht nur Ausdruck, sondern auch ein wesentliches Instrument zur Umsetzung dieses Prozesses waren. Über die detaillierte Analyse der Planungs- und Realisierungsgeschichte der Bauprojekte arbeitet er die Mechanismen heraus, mit denen der habsburgische Staat versuchte, sein Territorium gegen polnische Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen zu behaupten und flächendeckend zu durchdringen. Die Unzulänglichkeiten des habsburgischen Verwaltungsapparates und die Herausforderungen durch lokale Akteur:innen setzten diesem Herrschaftsanspruch jedoch Grenzen, deren genauer Verlauf in der Interaktion vor Ort immer wieder neu ausgehandelt wurde. Daraus ergibt sich ein dynamisches Bild staatlicher Herrschaft zu einem kritischen Zeitpunkt des habsburgischen Staatsbildungsprozesses

En s’appuyant sur l’étude d’archives restées jusqu’ici inexplorées et sur des entretiens inédits, Compagnons de lutte s’attache au travail de sept critiques et historiens de l’art espagnols qui ont pris une part extraordinairement active à la vie intellectuelle et politique de leur pays dans les années 1960 : ils publient, éditent, traduisent, ils organisent des expositions, des débats, des rencontres. Grâce à la complicité nouée avec Giulio Carlo Argan et Umberto Eco en Italie, Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez au Mexique, Gérald Gassiot-Talabot, Pierre Restany et le Salon de la Jeune Peinture à Paris, ils s’approprient les théories et les tendances artistiques circulant à ce moment-là en Europe et sur le continent américain, en les adaptant avec succès aux conditions spécifiques de l’Espagne franquiste.     Abstract: Unmittelbar nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs errichtete die Sowjet­union monumentale Siegesdenkmäler in den Zentren Wiens (Schwarzenbergplatz) und Berlins (Tiergarten). 1949 folgte als dritte Anlage das Ehrenmal in Berlin-Treptow, das größte Monument seiner Art außerhalb der Sowjetunion. Neben ihrer Funktion als Ruhestätte für die Gefallenen der Roten Armee sollten diese Anlagen in beiden Hauptstädten als dauerhafte Symbole sowjetischer Präsenz dienen. Erstmals werden die drei Denkmalsanlagen auf einer breiten Quellenbasis vergleichend untersucht sowie kunsthistorisch und erinnerungskulturell eingeordnet. Die Studie zeichnet ihre Entstehungsgeschichte nach und leuchtet in einer langen zeitlichen Perspektive ihre Nutzung und geschichtspolitische Bedeutung in den unterschiedlichen politischen Systemen vielfältig aus.

    Abstract: Hans Semper was born in 1845 to well known architect Gottfried Semper, who is most famous for creating the „Semperoper“ in Dresden. This study gives insight into his academic and personal biography. Semper was called to the University of Innsbruck as a private lecturer in 1876 to establish the recently founded discipline of art history. While teaching and researching until his retirement from professorship in 1916, Semper, as the first tenured professor, created an institute that could easily stand up to comparison with the larger universities of Vienna, Munich or Berlin. For this, he used state of the art teaching materials, such as photographies, diapositives, printed works and an extensive academic library, all of which later became the foundation of the „Sempersammlung“.

    Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute.     Abstract: "TECHNOCRATS OF THE IMAGINATION traces the rise of collaborative art and technology labs in the U.S. from WWII to the present. Ryan Bishop and John Beck reveal the intertwined histories of the avant-garde art movement and the military-industrial complex, showing how radical pedagogical practices traveled from Germany's Bauhaus movement to the U.S. art world and interacted with government-funded military research and development in university laboratories. During the 1960s both media labs and studio labs leaned heavily on methods of interdisciplinary collaboration and the power of American modernity to model new modes of social organization. The book's chapters take up MIT's Center for Art, Science, and Technology, Bell Labs's E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology) Salon, and Los Angeles Museum of Art's Art + Technology Program. Their interconnected history illuminates how much of contemporary media culture and aesthetics depends on the historical relationship between military, corporate, and university actors. In light of revived interest in Black Mountain College and other 1960s art and technology labs, this book draws important connections between the contemporary art world and the militarized lab model of research that has dominated the sciences since the 1950s. The authors situate the rise of collaborative art and technology projects in the 1960s within John Dewey's ideology of scientific democracy, showing how leading thinkers from the Bauhaus movement in Germany immigrated to the U.S. and brought with them a Deweyan model for collaborative and interdisciplinary art and technology research. Over the course of the decade, the U.S. government increased funding to scientific research at university and private laboratories. Beck and Bishop investigate how various art and technology projects incorporated the collaborative and innovative interdisciplinarity of the avant-garde art movement with the corporate funding structure driven by the U.S. government's military and technoscientific interests. Finally, the authors consider the legacy of 1960s art and technology projects. During the 1970s and 80s, defense R&D funding was less motivated by a Cold War corporate state, and was instead restructured according to an entrepreneurial and neoliberal model.     Abstract: Lancelot “Capability” Brown was one of the most influential landscape designers of the eighteenth-century at a time when Britain was changing radically from an agrarian to an industrial and colonial nation, whilst Europe was periodically convulsed by war and revolution. The extent and nature of his influence are, however, fiercely debated. Brown worked at hundreds of important sites across England and his name became synonymous with the “English Garden” style which was copied across Northern Europe and entranced Catherine the Great, who remodelled her landscapes in St Petersburg to reflect the new style. He was fêted in his time, and recognised by the Crown, but Brown’s style was readily copied over his later life and particularly after his death. Arguably, this ubiquity led to the denigration of his achievements and even his character, particularly by the agents of the Picturesque. The lack of any personal primary material from Brown - forcing scholars to rely on his landscapes, contracts and bank accounts - has hindered attempts to provide a rounded and credible account of the man and his works. However, by exploring his team of associates and his role as Royal Gardener, new light can be thrown on the man, his landscapes and his landscape legacy. Bringing together a number of perspectives from across Northern Europe, Capability Brown, Royal Gardener explores the lasting international impact of Brown. With Brown’s position as Royal Gardener at its heart, this book explores for the first time his business methods, working methods and European influence. It assesses how, crucially, Brown’s work practices placed him within the world of nurserymen and landscape designers, and how his business practices and long term relationships with draughtsmen and designers allowed him to manage a huge number of projects and a substantial financial turnover. This, in turn, allowed him to work in a way that promoted and advanced his style of landscape.     Abstract: Headdresses and coverings are among the most powerful vehicles of cultural identity, referring variously to nationality, gender, ethnicity, religion, profession and sub-culture. As part of a cultural identity, they can be used to distinguish or divide people, but may also serve as a constructive instrument that allows us to recognise mutual differences as a common value.Cultural identity is continuously evolving. Photos and texts provide a vehicle to question prevailing dynamics of identity and identification, visual stereotypes and cultural representation. Daniela Dossi's long-term residency at the open and collective studio Manoeuvre, a multidisciplinary artist-run space in Ghent's Rabot neighbourhood, resulted in an open design method, a textile research project based on a visual and textual archive of headdresses from around the world, and a preliminary collection of hybrid headdresses. The super-diversity of the studio provided the ideal context for this research. Together with Dossi, participants from diverse backgrounds and origins made 800 textile samples by hand using different techniques. Based on this open system, new hybrid headdresses and narratives can be designed by remixing images, texts and textiles: what might the headdress of the first Mexican, female President of the United States look like, for example? 'Hybrid Heads' is a project by Daniela Dossi and Manoeuvre. It is also an exhibition, an interactive installation, a web platform and a design-educational programme.     Abstract: Dieses Buch handelt in Wort und Bild vom traditionellen Metallhandwerk, das die Schöpfer religiöser buddhistischer Statuen in Nepal seit über 1000 Jahren ausüben. Die der Volksgruppe der Newar angehörenden Spezialisten sind Wachsmodelleure, Formenbauer, Giesser, Ziseleure und Feuervergolder. Ihre Arbeit zeichnet sich – teilweise bis heute – durch eine innige Mischung aus uralter Technologie, grossem Geschick, Religiosität und Kontemplation aus. Bücher und Ausstellungskataloge zur buddhistischen Religion, Kunst und Ikonographie gibt es sehr viele. Zum handwerklichen Aspekt der Künstler, welche die religiösen Bildnisse im Metallguss schaffen, fehlte jedoch eine umfassende Dokumentation mit einem historischen Rückblick auf die Entwicklung dieser «archaischen» Technologien. Der fundierte Text und der umfangreiche Bildteil stellen die einzige aktuelle und komplette Dokumentation eines wohl aussterbenden, 1300 Jahre alten Kunsthandwerks dar: der «rituellen» Herstellung von buddhistischen Statuen im cire-perdue-Guss («Wachsausschmelz- verfahren»).     Abstract: One may visit famous gardens in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka--or one may visit Japanese-styled gardens in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Berlin, London, Paris, São Paulo, or Singapore. We often view these gardens as representative of the essence of Japanese culture. Christian Tagsold argues, however, that the idea of the Japanese garden has less do to with Japan's history and traditions, and more to do with its interactions with the West. The first Japanese gardens in the West appeared at the world's fairs in Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876 and others soon appeared in museums, garden expositions, the estates of the wealthy, and public parks. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Japanese garden, described as mystical and attuned to nature, had usurped the popularity of the Chinese garden, so prevalent in the eighteenth century. While Japan sponsored the creation of some gardens in a series of acts of cultural diplomacy, the Japanese style was interpreted and promulgated by Europeans and Americans as well. But the fashion for Japanese gardens would decline in inverse relation to the rise of Japanese militarism in the 1930s, their rehabilitation coming in the years following World War II, with the rise of the Zen meditation garden style that has come to dominate the Japanese garden in the West. Tagsold has visited over eighty gardens in ten countries with an eye to questioning how these places signify Japan in non-Japanese geographical and cultural contexts. He ponders their history, the reasons for their popularity, and their connections to geopolitical events, explores their shifting aesthetic, and analyzes those elements which convince visitors that these gardens are "authentic." He concludes that a constant process of cultural translation between Japanese and Western experts and commentators marked these spaces as expressions of otherness, creating an idea of the Orient and its distinction from the West.--Publisher website

Bärbel Högner untersucht den von wechselseitiger Beeinflussung geprägten Entwurfsprozess der Planstadt und beleuchtet erstmals die soziale Seite des künstlich geschaffenen Stadtraums. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Le Corbusiers Regelwerk lokalen Gepflogenheiten gerecht wird: Seine Vision der »funktionellen Stadt« erfährt eine eigene Interpretation.

Die Autoren analysieren eine Fülle von großteils weitgehend unbekannten Projekten in verschiedenen Ländern zwischen Ostsee, Adria und Schwarzem Meer. Das besondere Interesse gilt den nationalpolitischen Motiven, die bei der Rekonstruktion in diesem Teil des Kontinents bis in die jüngste Zeit vielfach im Vordergrund stehen.

Weitere Einblicke in die Architektenpraxis um 1800 vermittelt eine Mappe mit Zeichnungen für ein Theater in Königsberg, die vermutlich Carl Ferdinand Langhans nach Entwürfen Gillys angefertigt hat. Von der Mittelalter-Faszination dieser Zeit zeugt Friedrich Fricks ebenfalls nach Vorlagen Gillys gedruckte Aquatinta-Serie „Schloss Marienburg in Preußen“. Für einen pragmatischen, aber nicht minder bemerkenswerten Umgang mit mittelalterlicher Bausubstanz stehen Friedrich Weinbrenners Entwürfe für den Umbau der Göttinger Paulinerkirche zur Universitätsbibliothek. Und schließlich belegen Karl Friedrich Schinkels druckgraphisch reproduzierten Entwürfe für einen Königspalast auf der Akropolis in Athen, wie lange man im 19. Jahrhundert an einer schöpferischen Erneuerung des griechischen Altertums arbeitete.     Abstract: In place of the entanglement of person and work that so strongly marks the artistic work of Andy Warhol, and settles it in the usual Pop Art context, Mèlanie-Chantal Deiss locates it within the cultural context of America's post-war period. Viewed from this perspective, Warhol's work - which tends to be classified as superficial and ahistorical ? exhibits unexpectedly serious engagements with concerns of the 1950s and 1960s. Throughout his image series, expressive, somewhat ambivalent narrative strands from America's post-war period unfurl, which transmit a concrete image, as a kind of written historical document. Warhol's visualized narration ultimately culminates in a cultural critique, which treats America not just as a stage of images, but also as site of contemplation of a cultural imaginary, in which art can critically and productively intervene

    Abstract: A revised survey of Rembrandt’s complete painted oeuvre. The question of which 17th-century paintings in Rembrandt’s style were actually painted by Rembrandt himself had already become an issue during his lifetime. It is an issue that is still hotly disputed among art historians today. The problem arose because Rembrandt had numerous pupils who learned the art of painting by imitating their master or by assisting him with his work as a portrait painter. He also left pieces unfinished, to be completed by others. The question is how to determine which works were from Rembrandt’s own hand. Can we, for example, define the criteria of quality that would allow us to distinguish the master’s work from that of his followers? Do we yet have methods of investigation that would deliver objective evidence of authenticity? To what extent do research techniques used in the physical sciences help? Or are we, after all, still dependent on the subjective, expert eye of the connoisseur? The book provides answers to these questions. Prof. Ernst van de Wetering, the author of our forthcoming book which deals with these questions, has been closely involved in all aspects of this research since 1968, the year the renowned Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) was founded. In particular, he played an important role in developing new criteria for authentication. Van de Wetering was also witness to the way the often overly zealous tendency to doubt the authenticity of Rembrandt’s paintings got out of hand. In this book he re-attributes to the master a substantial number of unjustly rejected Rembrandts. He also was closely involved in the (re)discovery of a considerable number of lost or completely unknown works by Rembrandt. The verdicts of earlier specialists - including the majority of members of the original RRP (up to 1989) - were based on connoisseurship: the self-confidence in one’s ability to recognise a specific artist’s style and ‘hand’. Over the years, Van de Wetering has carried out seminal research into 17th-century studio practice and ideas about art current in Rembrandt’s time. In this book he demonstrates the fallibility of traditional connoisseurship, especially in the case of Rembrandt, who was par excellence a searching artist.     Abstract: Bis heute wird der Tod Karls VI. und der Regierungsantritt Maria Theresias 1740 als eine einschneidende Zäsur in der österreichischen Geschichte gesehen. Doch nun stellt sich vor dem Hintergrund eines weitergefassten Schnittstellenbegriffes (Reinhart Koselleck) die Frage, ob der zweifellos grundlegende Wandel zwischen 1720 und 1780 nicht differenzierter gesehen werden muss. Ausgehend vom Raum des Wiener Hofes, an dem der Herrscherwechsel in seinen Auswirkungen am ehesten dokumentiert werden kann, wird aus der Sicht sogenannten Hofkünste versucht, Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten aufzuzeigen

    Abstract: Double-talented artists were particularly numerous during the period of expressionism, which was characterized by political and radical social changes. The book presented offers informations about the artists’ motivations and focuses on two excellent examples of artistic double-talent - Oskar Kokoschka, the founder of drama expressionism and Ludwig Meidner, highly praised for his apocalyptic landscapes. The interdisciplinary comparison of paintings and graphics with the dramas, poems and prose texts written by the artists allows offers valuable insights into their entire expressionistic oevre and, at the same time, a closer understanding of the relationship between art and literature
    Abstract: Der Expressionismus als Bewegung zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erfasste Künstler, Literaten und Musiker gleichermaßen und legte wichtige Grundlagen für die Entwicklung der modernen Kunst. Außergewöhnlich hoch ist in dieser Zeit die Zahl doppelbegabter Künstler, die gedrängt vom Willen zu gesellschaftlichem Umbruch und inspiriert von neuesten Erkenntnissen aus Philosophie und Wissenschaft ihren expressiven und emotional aufgeladenen künstlerischen Ausdruck in verschiedenen Medien suchten. Untersuchungen zeitgenössischer Texte geben Aufschluss über die Voraussetzungen zum doppelbegabten Schaffen, das wie der historische Vergleich zeigt, nie zuvor in solcher Intensität stattgefunden hat. Hervorragende Beispiele expressionistischer Doppelbegabung sind Oskar Kokoschka – prominenter Künstler und „Begründer des Dramenexpressionismus“ – und Ludwig Meidner, der für seine apokalyptischen Landschaften einst hoch gerühmt wurde. Der Vergleich ihrer Gemälde und Grafiken mit ihren Dramen, Gedichten und Prosatexten erlaubt interessante, tiefergehende Einblicke in ihre Intentionen und die Bandbreite ihrer Themen. Zugleich ermöglicht der interdisziplinäre Ansatz ein eingehenderes Verständnis für ihr expressionistisches Gesamtoeuvre und die Bezüge zwischen Kunst und Literatur

    Abstract: Until today, the death of Charles VI and Maria Theresia’s ascending the throne 1740 is seen as a major turning point in Austrian history. But now is the question of whether in different “layers” and “rooms” without doubt fundamental change between 1720 and 1780 not differentiated must be seen against the background of the concept of interface (“Sattelzeit”/Reinhart Koselleck). On the basis of the space “Viennese court”, where the change of rulers in its effects most likely can be documented, attempts from the perspective of different disciplines (the so called “Hofkünste” – literature/poetry, arts, theatre/dance, music) point out continuities and discontinuities
    Abstract: Bis heute wird der Tod Karls VI. und der Regierungsantritt Maria Theresias 1740 als eine einschneidende Zäsur in der österreichischen Geschichte gesehen. Doch nun stellt sich vor dem Hintergrund eines weitergefassten Schnittstellenbegriffes (Reinhart Koselleck) die Frage, ob der zweifellos grundlegende Wandel zwischen 1720 und 1780 nicht differenzierter gesehen werden muss. Ausgehend vom Raum des Wiener Hofes, an dem der Herrscherwechsel in seinen Auswirkungen am ehesten dokumentiert werden kann, wird aus der Sicht sogenannten Hofkünste versucht, Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten aufzuzeigen

    Abstract: Eindrucksvolle Naturlandschaften und exotische Kulturen lockten Künstler aus dem Rhein-Main-Gebiet in zahlreiche europäische Länder, in den Orient und sogar bis nach Amerika. Ausstellung und begleitender Katalog thematisieren die Faszination dieser Künstler für fremde Bildwelten vom späten 18. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert. Ihre künstlerischen Interessen an den fremden Orten waren sehr vielfältig: Sie suchten nach exotischen Bildmotiven, dokumentierten wissenschaftliche Expeditionen oder experimentierten mit fremden Lichtverhältnissen. Die gesammelten Reiseeindrücke hielten die Künstler in Bleistiftskizzen, Aquarellen, Ölstudien und Fotografien fest. Diese dienten nach der Rückkehr zumeist als Bildvorlagen für aufwändigere Ölgemälde. Angesichts einer steigenden Nachfrage spezialisierten sich einige Künstler auf bestimmte Bildsujets und trugen so teilweise zur Verbreitung stereotyper Vorstellungen von der Fremde bei.     Abstract: Eindrucksvolle Naturlandschaften und exotische Kulturen lockten Künstler aus dem Rhein-Main-Gebiet in zahlreiche europäische Länder, in den Orient und sogar bis nach Amerika. Ausstellung und begleitender Katalog thematisieren die Faszination dieser Künstler für fremde Bildwelten vom späten 18. bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert. Ihre künstlerischen Interessen an den fremden Orten waren sehr vielfältig: Sie suchten nach exotischen Bildmotiven, dokumentierten wissenschaftliche Expeditionen oder experimentierten mit fremden Lichtverhältnissen. Die gesammelten Reiseeindrücke hielten die Künstler in Bleistiftskizzen, Aquarellen, Ölstudien und Fotografien fest. Diese dienten nach der Rückkehr zumeist als Bildvorlagen für aufwändigere Ölgemälde. Angesichts einer steigenden Nachfrage spezialisierten sich einige Künstler auf bestimmte Bildsujets und trugen so teilweise zur Verbreitung stereotyper Vorstellungen von der Fremde bei.
