The Invention of the English Landscape examines these journeys and investigations to explore how the natural and historic English landscape was reconfigured to become a widely enjoyed cultural and leisure resource.Peter Borsay considers the manifold forces behind this transformation, such as the rise of consumer culture, the media, industrial and transport revolutions, the Enlightenment, Romanticism, and the Gothic revival. In doing so, he reveals the development of a powerful bond between landscape and natural identity, against the backdrop of social and political change from the early modern period to the start of the Second World War. Borsay s interdisciplinary approach demonstrates how human understandings of the natural world shaped the geography of England, and uncovers a wealth of valuable material, from novels and poems to paintings, that expose historical understandings of the landscape.     Abstract: This Open access book is a collection of essays and offers an in-depth analysis of silence as an aesthetic practice and a textual strategy which paradoxically speaks of the unspoken nature of many inconvenient hidden truths of Irish society in the work of contemporary fiction writers. The study acknowledges Ireland’s history of damaging silences and considers its legacies, but it also underscores how silence can serve as a valuable, even productive, means of expression. From a wide range of critical perspectives, the individual essays address, among other issues, the conspiracies of silence in Catholic Ireland, the silenced structural oppression of Celtic Tiger Ireland, the recovery of silenced stories/voices of the past and their examination in the present, as well as millennial disaffection and the silencing of vulnerability in today’s neoliberal Ireland. The book ’s attention to silence provides a rich vocabulary for understanding what unfolds in the quiet interstices of Irish writing from recent decades.     Abstract: This work presents a structural and operative model of successful processes of school reform, based on eleven source-based studies on the history of educational and school-based pedagogy. Oriented on real-world cases and sources, these studies analyse the reform practices of historical reform schools during the twentieth century. The point of reference in each case is the individual school as a pedagogical unit of action. The studies are historically and empirically grounded and provide in-depth insights into the historical practices of schools as well as historical school reforms. The term “conditions for success” is employed here to focus on organisational structures and pedagogical patterns of action within historical processes of reform. The findings are derived from the inherent logic of practical pedagogical processes of reform. These are structures and patterns of action developed by the pedagogical professionals themselves through social processes. The results of the educational-historical source studies are collated here in a model of recurring professional patterns of pedagogical action and structure. The resulting historically and empirically developed “Five-plus-two-K Structure of Successful School Reform Processes” was tested on 100 modern day reform schools and it could be shown that these processes recur over a period of about one hundred years. Following the inherent logic of pedagogical processes in schools, the “Five-plus-two-K Structure of Successful School Reform Processes” was developed through a process of professional pedagogical action, shaped by professional pedagogical action and interaction, and was differentiated for professional pedagogical action. This model is integrative on the basis that it is primarily pedagogically constituted and was closely developed with educational professionals. The model is thus an educational-historical contribution to a theory of school reform processes and contributes to the pedagogical understanding of the processes of school development
    Abstract: Auf der Grundlage von elf bildungshistorischen und schulpädagogischen Quellenstudien wird ein Struktur- und Handlungsmodell gelingender Schulreformprozesse entwickelt. Die Studien analysieren fallorientiert und quellengestützt die Reformpraxen an historischen Reformschulen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bezugspunkt ist dabei jeweils die Einzelschule als pädagogische Handlungseinheit. Die Studien sind historisch-empirisch fundiert und geben vertiefte Einblicke in historische Schul(reform)praxis. Fokussiert werden mit dem Terminus Gelingensbedingungen organisationale Strukturen und pädagogische Handlungsmuster innerhalb der historischen Reformprozesse. Die Befunde leiten sich aus der Eigenlogik pädagogisch-praktischer Reformprozesse ab. Es sind Strukturen und Handlungsmuster, die von den pädagogischen Akteur*innen im sozialen Prozess selbst entwickelt wurden. Der Ertrag der bildungshistorischen Quellenstudien bündelt sich in einem Modell wiederkehrender pädagogisch-professioneller Handlungs- und Strukturmuster. Diese historisch-empirisch entwickelte „Fünf-plus-zwei-K-Struktur gelingender Schulreformprozesse“ wurde an 100 gegenwärtigen Reformschulen überprüft und konnte im Ergebnis in einem Zeitraum von rund einhundert Jahren als wiederkehrend validiert werden. Entstanden im Prozess professionellen pädagogischen Handelns, gestaltet durch professionelles pädagogisches Handeln und Interaktion und ausdifferenziert für professionelles pädagogisches Handeln folgt das Fünf-plus-zwei-K-Strukturmodell der Eigenlogik pädagogischer Prozesse in der Schule. Es ist anschlussfähig, weil es primär pädagogisch konstituiert ist und sich nah bei den Akteur*innen befindet.     Abstract: The volume "Schule und Unterricht im digitalen Wandel" (School and Teaching in the Digital Transformation) explores perspectives of reconstructive-sensual research for the study of school and teaching in the digital transformation. Four empirical studies are presented and their findings are classified theoretically and methodologically. The studies are interested in the changes as well as the stability of practices in the classroom when digital media are used. And they investigate how students and teachers interpret the transformation processes that accompany digitization.     Abstract: Der Band „Schule und Unterricht im digitalen Wandel“ lotet Perspektiven einer rekonstruktiv-sinnverstehenden Forschung für die Untersuchung von Schule und Unterricht im digitalen Wandel aus. Es werden vier empirische Studien vorgestellt und ihre Befunde theoretisch und methodisch eingeordnet.     Abstract: This open access book examines how the form of the list features as a tool for meaning-making in the genre of detective fiction from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. The book analyzes how both readers and detectives rely on listing as an ordering and structuring tool, and highlights the crucial role that lists assume in the reading process. It extends the boundaries of an emerging field dedicated to the study of lists in literature and caters to a newly revived interest in form and New Formalist approaches in narratological research. The central aim of this book is to show how detective fiction makes use of lists in order to frame various conceptions of knowledge. The frames created by these lists are crucial to decoding the texts, and they can be used to demonstrate how readers can be engaged in the act of detection or manipulated into accepting certain propositions in the text.     Abstract: Der inklusive Freiwilligendienst weltwärts ist eine privilegierte Form der räumlichen Bewegung, die jedoch migrationsgesellschaftliche Differenz hervorbringen kann. Manuel Peters erkundet aus migrationspädagogischer und rassismuskritischer Perspektive die komplexen Aneignungsweisen rassifizierter Ordnungen. Mithilfe postkolonialer, macht- und rassismusanalytischer sowie bildungstheoretischer Ansätze zeigt er, wie Aneignungsweisen als spezifische, interaktiv hervorgebrachte und (global-)gesellschaftlich verortete Subjektivierungspraktiken bzw. Bildungsprozesse rekonstruiert werden können. It begins in Europe with the European Union and its promotion of multilingualism, and with controversies over English-taught courses and programs in universities in the name of internationalization. It then moves to the post-colonial world where disputes over English in the schools reveal longstanding grievances and the inequities of historically rooted and politically motivated language policies, and where French is losing its hold to English in some former French-speaking colonies. It finally shifts to the United States where state and local officials and grassroots organizers are addressing the "foreign language deficit" and initiating programs that promote multilingualism. Focusing on the design, decoration, and reception of a range of elite and middling class homes from this period, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 demonstrates that the material culture of domestic life was central to how this function of the home was experienced, expressed, and understood at this time. Examining craft production and collection, gift exchange and written description, inheritance and loss, it carefully unpacks the material processes that made the home a focus for contemporaries’ social and emotional lives. The first book on its subject, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 employs methodologies from both art history and material culture studies to examine previously unpublished interiors, spaces, texts, images, and objects. Utilising extensive archival research; visual, material, and textual analysis; and histories of emotion, sociability, and materiality, it sheds light on the decoration and reception of a broad array of domestic spaces. In so doing, it writes a new history of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century domestic space, establishing the materiality of the home as a crucial site for identity formation, social interaction, and emotional expression. Focusing on the design, decoration, and reception of a range of elite and middling class homes from this period, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 demonstrates that the material culture of domestic life was central to how this function of the home was experienced, expressed, and understood at this time. Examining craft production and collection, gift exchange and written description, inheritance and loss, it carefully unpacks the material processes that made the home a focus for contemporaries' social and emotional lives. The first book on its subject, Domestic Space in Britain, 1750-1840 employs methodologies from both art history and material culture studies to examine previously unpublished interiors, spaces, texts, images, and objects. Jews in Britain have risen to the top of nearly every profession, they run major companies, sit at the top tables in politics, make their voices heard in the media, are prominent in science and the arts. Of course there is serious poverty and gross disadvantage, just as there is in any community. But on any objective measure, British Jews have done well. Mit diesem Anspruch geht die Abweisung eines Modells von Lehrer:innenbildung einher, das sich in einer unhinterfragten Übernahme etablierter Praxisroutinen erschöpft. Eine anspruchsvolle Reflexion pädagogischer Praxis wird im dominanten Diskurs mit einer distanzierten, den Reflexionsgegenstand objektivierenden Beobachtendenperspektive assoziiert, die einen Ausstieg aus unmittelbaren Praxiszusammenhängen und einen Zugriff auf wissenschaftliche Wissensbestände erlaubt. In empirischen Zugriffen auf Reflexionssituationen, die in pädagogischen Praxiskontexten situiert sind, lässt sich eine derartige Beobachtendenperspektive jedoch kaum nachzeichnen - das Reflexionsideal steht also in Diskrepanz zum Praxisphänomen. Diese Diskrepanz führt vielfach zu der Interpretation, dass pädagogische Praktiker:innen keine anspruchsvolle Reflexion ihrer Praxis leisten würden. Wird Reflexion in pädagogischen Praxiskontexten jedoch selbst als theoriefähiges Phänomen mit eigenen Ansprüchen in den Blick genommen, eröffnet sich eine Lesart jenseits einer bloßen Defizitzuschreibung, die ethischen Dimensionen praktischer pädagogischer Reflexion einen systematischen Stellenwert einräumen kann. Das Abweichen von einer möglichst distanzierten Beobachtendenperspektive kann so nicht nur als Verfehlung betrachtet, sondern auch als Moment des Ansprechbar-Werdens für pädagogische Verantwortungserfahrungen figuriert werden. Diese Arbeit verfolgt das Anliegen, praktische pädagogische Reflexion zu (re-)konzeptualisieren und darüber Impulse für einen kontext- und gegenstandssensiblen Reflexionsbegriff zu erarbeiten. Die Annäherung an Reflexion erfolgt über eine Untersuchung von Unterrichts- nachgesprächen im Kontext der zweiten Phase der Lehrer:innenbildung. Gesprächsanalytisch unterschiedene Reflexionsmodi bilden die Grundlage für eine traditions- und alteritätstheoretisch gestützte Interpretation praktischer pädagogischer Reflexion, die Anschlüsse an erziehungstheoretische Begründungsmotive der Reflexionsbedürftigkeit pädagogischer Praxis auslotet. Diese Perspektive auf Reflexion in pädagogischen Praxiskontexten versteht sich als Angebot, das dominante Reflexionsverständnis im Lehrer:innenbildungsdiskurs zu pluralisieren.

    Abstract: The Politics of Speech in Later Twentieth-Century Poetry: Local Tongues in Heaney, Brooks, Harrison, and Clifton argues that local speech became a central facet of English-language poetry in the second half of the twentieth century. It is based on a key observation about four major poets from both sides of the Atlantic: Seamus Heaney, Gwendolyn Brooks, Tony Harrison, and Lucille Clifton all respond to societal crises by arranging, reproducing, and reconceiving their particular versions of local speech in poetic form. The book’s overarching claim is that “local tongues” in poetry have the capacity to bridge aesthetic and sociopolitical realms because nonstandard local speech declares its distinction from the status quo and binds people who have been subordinated by hierarchical social conditions, while harnessing those versions of speech into poetic structures can actively counter the very hierarchies that would degrade those languages. The diverse local tongues of these four poets marshaled into the forms of poetry situate them at once in literary tradition, in local contexts, and in prevailing social constructs.

    Abstract: “Can I choose to die?” As the number of requests for euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide continues to rise, human rights law faces a new conflict: the right to die vs. the right to life… The right to die or, in other words, ‘the right to choose the time and manner of one’s own death’ is a question of personal autonomy and its limits. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the right to die and sheds light on its possible future under the European Convention on Human Rights. After setting a clear framework by defining the key terminology, the book takes a two-part approach to achieving its aim. The first part focuses on the right to die in practice by examining selected jurisdictions. Switzerland, which is famous for its assisted suicide organizations, and the Netherlands, which was the first country to legalize euthanasia, are examined in detail. Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, and -as an exception to the Convention perspective - Canada are also included. While this examination offers a better understanding of what the right to die looks like in practice, it also provides insights on the slippery slope argument, which serves as a counterweight to personal autonomy, without making a definitive statement on its validity. This part also illustrates the different paths that led or did not lead to the right to die in practice. The second part is an analysis of the European Court of Human Rights case law on the right to die. The Court has made important statements in only very cases, while its caution when approaching such a delicate and controversial topic among its 47 members is understandably emphasized. This analysis of the Court’s approach to the balancing of personal autonomy against other interests allows us to take a look back at the practice in more permissive jurisdictions through the lens of the Convention. Taken together, the book’s two parts provide valuable lessons for countries that decide to practice assisted dying, which are outlined in the conclusion. In addition, given that a purely legal approach can only offer a partial picture, the book argues that an interdisciplinary approach would be much more favorable in terms of providing the necessary basis for the right to die debate.

    Abstract: Neo-Victorian Things: Re-Imagining Nineteenth-Century Material Cultures in Literature and Film is the first volume to focus solely on the replication, reconstruction, and re-presentation of Victorian things. It investigates the role of materiality in contemporary returns to the past as a means of assessing the function of things in remembering, revisioning, and/or reimagining the nineteenth century. Examining iterations of material culture in literature, film and popular television series, this volume offers a reconsideration of nineteenth-century things and the neo-Victorian cultural forms that they have inspired, animated, and even haunted. By turning to new and relatively underexplored strands of neo-Victorian materiality—including opium paraphernalia, slave ships, clothing, and biographical objects—and interrogating the critical role such objects play in reconstructing the past, this volume offers ways of thinking about how mis/apprehensions of material culture in the nineteenth century continue to shape our present understanding of things.

    Abstract: British Murder Mysteries, 1880-1965: Facts and Fictions conceptualizes detective fiction as an archive, i.e., a trove of documents and sources to be used for historical interpretation. By framing the genre as a shifting set of values, definitions, and practices, the book historicizes the contested meanings of analytical categories like class, race, gender, nation, and empire that have been applied to the forms and functions of detection. Three organizing themes structure this investigation: fictive facticity, genre fluidity, and conservative modernity. This volume thus shows how British detective fiction from the late-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century both shaped and was shaped by its social, cultural, and political contexts and the lived experience of its authors and readers at critical moments in time.

    Abstract: Chemiebezogene Kompetenzen werden bereits im Sachunterricht der Grundschule entwickelt und sollen im Chemieunterricht der Sekundarstufe I aufgegriffen und weiterentwickelt werden. Ziel dieser Studie war es, die chemiebezogenen Kompetenzen der Schülerinnen und Schüler in der Übergangsphase zwischen Sachunterricht und Chemieunterricht zu analysieren. In einer Ergänzungsstudie wurden zusätzlich sowohl die Auswirkungen der Schulschließungen aufgrund der SARS-CoV-II Pandemie auf die Kompetenzen der Schülerinnen und Schüler als auch der Einfluss einer veränderten Testadministration untersucht. Insgesamt wurden die Kompetenzen von 2262 Lernenden der Jahrgangsstufen 5 bis 9 zu drei Messzeitpunkten analysiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die chemiebezogenen Kompetenzen sowohl zum Ende der Grundschulzeit als auch zu Beginn des Chemieunterrichts über alle Kompetenzbereiche hinweg sehr heterogen ausfallen. Dennoch sind sie zu Beginn des Chemieunterrichts in einigen Kompetenzbereichen höher ausgeprägt als zum Ende der Grundschulzeit. Nach den pandemiebedingten Schulschließungen waren die Kompetenzen ähnlich ausgeprägt wie in den gleichen Jahrgangsstufen vor den Schulschließungen. Eine während der Schulschließungen notwendige Bearbeitung der Testhefte von zu Hause aus führte vor allem bei den jüngeren Schülerinnen und Schülern zu besseren Testergebnissen als die Bearbeitung in der Schule. Um die Entwicklung chemiebezogener Kompetenzen in der Übergangsphase zu optimieren, sollte der Erwerb dieser Kompetenzen bereits im Sachunterricht einheitlicher gestaltet werden

    Abstract: The complexities of speech production, perception, and comprehension are enormous. Theoretical approaches of these complexities most recently face the challenge of accounting for findings on subphonemic differences. The aim of the present dissertation is to establish a robust foundation of findings on such subphonemic differences. One rather popular case for differences in subphonemic detail is word-final /s/ and /z/ in English (henceforth S) as it constitutes a number of morphological functions. Using word-final S, three general issues are investigated. First, are there subphonemic durational differences between different types of word-final S? If there are such differences, how can they be accounted for? Second, can such subphonemic durational differences be perceived? Third, do such subphonemic durational differences influence the comprehension of S? These questions are investigated by five highly controlled studies: a production task, an implementation of Linear Discriminative Learning, a same-different task, and two number-decision tasks. Using not only real words but also pseudowords as target items, potentially confounding effects of lexical storage are controlled for. Concerning the first issue, the results show that there are indeed durational differences between different types of word-final S. Non-morphemic S is longest in duration, clitic S is shortest in duration, and plural S duration is in-between non-morphemic S and clitic S durations. It appears that the durational differences are connected to a word’s semantic activation diversity and its phonological certainty. Regarding the second issue, subphonemic durational differences in word-final S can be perceived, with higher levels of perceptibility for differences of 35 ms and higher. In regard to the third issue, subphonemic durational differences are found not to influence the speed of comprehension, but show a significant effect on the process of comprehension. The overall results give raise to a revision of various extant models of speech production, perception, and comprehension
