    Kurzfassung: "Language is Politics discusses power relations between languages in the world, with a particular focus on English. Even though English is the most widely spoken and the most powerful language worldwide, it is not the lingua franca it is often supposed to be. The basic tenet of this book is that languages do not exist in the natural world; they are artefacts made by humans. The book debunks some common myths about language and it suggests that we should be more modest in our assumptions, for instance concerning the linguistic uniqueness of our own species. The author argues in favour of an ecological or balanced approach to language. This approach sees humans and other animals as part of the larger ecosystems that life depends on. As in nature, diversity is crucial to the survival of languages. The current linguistic ecosystem is out of balance and this book shows that education can help to restore the balance and cope with the challenges of a multilingual and multicultural world. With an ecological approach to language and a focus on narratives, personal language histories, this will be key reading for researchers and academics as well as students of English language and linguistics"--

Empirically rich and methodically eclectic, Queer China skilfully weaves together historical and archival research, textual and discourse analysis, along with interviews and ethnography. Breaking new ground and bringing a non-Western perspective to the fore, this transdisciplinary work contributes to multiple academic fields including literary and cultural studies, media and communication studies, film and screen studies, contemporary art, theatre and performance studies, gender and sexuality studies, China/Asia and Global South studies, cultural history and cultural geography, political theory and the study of social movements"--

    Kurzfassung: This volume contributes new insights to the scientific debate on post-Socialist urbanities. Based on ethnographic research in cities of Central Asia, the Caucasus and Russia, its contributions scrutinise the social production of diverse public, parochial and private spaces in conjunction with patterns of everyday encounter, identification, consumption and narration. The analyses extend from the transnational entanglements between a Dushanbe bazaar and hyper-modern Dubai to the micro-level hierarchies in a flat-sharing community in Astana. They explore competing notions of urban belonging and aesthetics in Yerevan, local perception of Central Asian Muslims in Kazan and Saint Petersburg, and more, providing a rich tapestry of academic study. Taken together, the case studies address cities as gateways to 'new worlds' (both local and global), discuss ambitions of states at taming urban landscapes, and illustrate current trends of economic, religious and other lifestyles in urban Central Asia and beyond. This book was originally published as a special issue of Central Asian Survey.

    Kurzfassung: Bringing together ideas from the fields of sociology, economics, human geography, ethics, political and communications theory, this book deals with some key subjects in urban design: the multidimensional effects of the spatial form of cities, ways of appropriating urban space, and the different material factors involved in the emergence of social life. It puts forward an innovative conceptual framework to reconsider some fundamental features of city-making as a social process: the place of cities in encounters and communications, in the randomness of events and in the repetition of activities that characterise societies. In doing so, it provides fresh analytical tools and theoretical insights to help advance our understanding of the networks of causalities, contingencies and contexts involved in practices of city-making. In a systematic attempt to bring urban analysis and research from the social sciences together, the book is organised around three vital yet relatively neglected dimensions in the social and material shaping of cities: (i) Cities as systems of encounter: an approach to urban segregation as segregated networks; (ii) Cities as systems of communication: a view of shared spaces as a means to association and social experience; (iii) Cities as systems of material interaction: explorations on urban form as an effect of interactivity, and interactivity as an effect of form.     Kurzfassung: Die Metapher begleitet die Geschichte der Menschheit, seit die Suche nach Erkenntnis und Zugehörigkeit die Handlungs- und Orientierungsweisen des Menschen prägt. Metaphern sind eine der ersten rhetorischen, poetischen Figuren, vor allem in der für die Entstehung modernen Denkens bahnbrechenden 'Ilias' Homers. Die Wertschätzung von Metaphern von der Antike bis heute war durchaus wechselvoll.     Anmerkung: Das Thema "Kultur" hat seit dem sogenannten "cultural turn" in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften eine enorme Konjunktur erfahren. Die damit verbundene These einer paradigmatischen Wende auch der Soziologie ist wenig überzeugend. Am Beispiel der Entwicklung von Vornamen über 100 Jahre wird gezeigt, dass man sehr gut mit dem klassischen Instrumentarium der Soziologie und dessen wissenschaftstheoretischer Begründung arbeiten kann, um Erkenntnisse über die Kulturentwicklung einer Gesellschaft zu produzieren. Am Beispiel der Vergabe von Vornamen lassen sich kulturelle Modernisierungsprozesse empirisch beschreiben und strukturell erklären: Die traditionellen Ligaturen Familie, Religion und Bindung an die Nation verlieren im Zeitverlauf in der Strukturierung der Vergabe von Vornamen an Bedeutung, Prozesse der Individualisierung und der Globalisierung gewinnen hingegen an Relevanz. Dabei lassen sich schicht- und geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede beobachten. Die hier vorgelegte Studie versteht sich einerseits als eine empirische Analyse kultureller Modernisierungsprozesse am Beispiel von Vornamen, sie versteht sich andererseits als eine exemplarische Einführung in die Kultursoziologie. Am Beispiel der Analyse von Vornamen werden die Möglichkeiten eines spezifischen Verständnisses von Kultursoziologie erläutert.
