Taking the reader through time and across expressive forms, this volume traces jazz as an aesthetic influence, a political force, and a representational focus in American literature and culture. It shows how Jazz has long been a rich source of aesthetic stimulation, influencing writers as stylistically wide-ranging as Langston Hughes, Eudora Welty, and James Baldwin, or artists as diverse as Aaron Douglas, Jackson Pollock, and Gordon Parks."

    Abstract: Kaum war das 21. Jahrhundert angebrochen, wartete es auch schon mit neuen Schrecken, Idiotien und gelegentlichen Glücksmomenten auf. Zu den wenigen, die es noch wagen, in diesem von den Medien verdickten und beschleunigten Wirrwarr Zusammenhänge herzustellen und dabei an einem anspruchsvollen Begriff von Kritik festzuhalten, gehört Diedrich Diederichsen. In dieser Wundertüte von einem Reader mit Aufsätzen und Kommentaren, wenn auch erst aus den ersten dreiundzwanzig Jahren des Jahrhunderts, zeigt er sein stupendes Wissen über sämtliche Trends in Kunst, Kino, Fernsehen, Literatur, Musik, Theater, Theorie und Politik, das bis in die feinsten Verästelungen der Gegenkultur reicht. Er ist in der Lage, aus Erkenntnistheorie ebenso Funken zu schlagen wie aus den »Simpsons«, den Inszenierungen von René Pollesch oder Serien wie »Underground Railroad«. Vor allem vermag er es wie kein anderer, das eine mit dem anderen zu verknüpfen und von Theodor W.     Abstract: "Directly addressing the underrepresentation of Black composers in core music curricula, Expanding the Canon: Black Composers in the Music Theory Classroom aims to both demonstrate why diversification is badly needed and help faculty expand their teaching with practical, classroom-oriented lesson plans that focus on teaching music theory with music by Black composers. This collection of 21 chapters is loosely arranged to resemble a typical music theory curriculum, with topics progressing from basic to advanced and moving from fundamentals, diatonic harmony, and chromatic harmony to form, popular music, and music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Some chapters focus on segments of the traditional music theory sequence, while others consider a single style or composer. Contributors address both methods to incorporate the music of Black composers into familiar topics, and ways to rethink and expand the purview of the music theory curriculum. A foreword by Philip Ewell and an introductory narrative by Teresa L. Reed describing her experiences as an African American student of music set the volume in wider context. Incorporating a wide range of examples by composers across classical, jazz, and popular genres, this book helps bring the rich and varied body of music by Black composers into the core of music theory pedagogy and offers a vital resource for all faculty teaching music theory and analysis."

    Abstract: "Focused on research within Africa and the African diaspora, contributors to this volume think through the painful iterations of trauma, systemic racism, and the vestiges of colonial oppression as well as the processes of healing and emancipation that emerge from wounded states. Their chapters explore an acoustemology of intimacy, woman-centered eroticism generated through musical performance, desire and longing in ethnographic knowledge production, and listening as intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, authors engage with and question the fetishization of race in jazz; examine conceptions of vulgarity and profanity in movement and dance-ethnography; and address pain, trauma, and violation, whether physical, spiritual, intellectual, or political. Authors in this volume strive toward empathetic, ethical, and creative ethnographic engagements that summon vulnerability and healing. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled. The resulting book explores sensory knowledge that is frequently left unacknowledged in ethnographic work, advancing conversations about performed sonic and somatic modalities through which we navigate our entanglements as engaged scholars"--

    Abstract: Am Ende der 1970er Jahre entstand ein ästhetisch-subjektkulturelles Konzept in der deutschsprachigen Pop-Musik, das alles ,Kalte' affirmierte: ,Kälte-Pop'. Bands wie Kraftwerk, DAF und Einstürzende Neubauten entwickelten als Gegenentwurf zum pop- wie gegenkulturell hegemonialen Wärme-Kult ein System von Motiven und Strategien, das all jene Zeichen und Prozesse der (Post-)Moderne ästhetisierte und glorifizierte, die in der bundesdeutschen Gesellschaft und vor allem im linksalternativen Milieu als negative Aspekte einer vermeintlich kalten Welt interpretiert wurden: Gefühlslosigkeit und Dehumanisierung, Industrie und Großstadt, Künstlichkeit und Entfremdung, Disziplin und körperliche Funktionalität, Schnee und Eis, Beton und Stahl sowie Computer, Maschinen und Roboter. Dabei schlugen die ,Kälte'-Akteur:innen eine Brücke zu den Historischen Avantgarden der 1920er Jahre und inszenierten sich stereotypisch als ,kalte Deutsche'. Die Arbeit analysiert unter Einbeziehung der transnationalen Verknüpfungen die ,Kälte-Welle' (1978-1983) in der deutschen Pop-Musik, ihre Bildwelten und Codes, historischen Bezüge und Rezeption, das historische Umfeld ihrer Entstehung sowie nachfolgende Erscheinungsformen ,kalter' Musik, die sich bis heute in der internationalen Pop-Musik und bei Acts wie Rammstein zeigen

    Abstract: Anfang der 1920er Jahre erreichte Jazzmusik Europa und verbreitete sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit durch Hörensagen, amerikanische Musikerinnen und Musiker und später auch Schallplatten in Deutschland. Die Musik wirbelte das kulturelle Leben und seine Diskurse in einem Maße auf, dass die kulturelle Elite um den Fortbestand der europäischen musikalischen Traditionen bangte: Jazz wurde einerseits vehement abgelehnt und andererseits euphorisch begrüßt und als Ausdruck von Freiheit verstanden.Dieser "Jazzaufprall" in den Jahren zwischen 1924 und 1929 wird in der Studie anhand von zeitgenössischen Betrachtungen beleuchtet: Was passierte mit den unterschiedlichen Dimensionen des Stadtlebens? Wie wurden die fremde Kultur und die Musik in die bestehenden kulturellen Szenen eingeordnet? Und inwiefern konstruierten sich in Berlin durch diesen internationalen Einfluss neue Facetten einer urbanen Identität?

    Abstract: 〈i〉Music Scenes and Migrations〈/i〉 brings together new work from Brazilian and European scholars around the themes of musical place and transnationalism across the Atlantic triangle connecting Brazil, Africa and Europe. In considering the roles played by cities as hubs of cultural intersection, socialization, exchange and transformation; as sites of political intervention and contestation; and as homes to large concentrations of consumers, technologies and media, Rio de Janeiro necessarily figures prominently, given its historical importance as an international port at the centre of the Lusophone Atlantic world. The volume also gives attention to other urban centres, within Brazil and abroad, towards which musicians and musical traditions have migrated and converged - such as São Paulo, Lisbon and Madrid - where they have reinvented themselves; where notions of Brazilian and Lusophone identity have been reconfigured; and where independent, peripheral and underground scenes have contested the hegemony of the musical 'mainstream'. 〈br〉〈br〉The contributions to the volume are grouped according to three key thematic areas: Colonial and post-Colonial transnationalisms, migrations and diasporas; relocating Rio de Janeiro; and demetropolitanizing the musical city: other scenes, industries, technologies

    Abstract: Der Kalte Krieg wurde kälter, der Kampf um die politisch-ideologische Lufthoheit zwischen Ost und West heftiger. Aber zugleich geschah in den späten 70ern und 80ern Erstaunliches. Der deutsch-deutsche Kulturaustausch geriet heftig in Bewegung - ausgerechnet in dem Bereich, der als besonders sensibel galt: der Pop- und Rockmusik. DDR-Bands wie City, Pankow und Puhdys wurden erstmals auf BRD-Tour geschickt, Karat traten bei "Wetten, dass...?" auf, ließen Hunderttausende von West-Mark nach Ost-Berlin fließen. Im Gegenzug durften Westkünstler wie Udo Lindenberg, Peter Maffay und Rio Reiser in der DDR spielen, rockten Die Toten Hosen semilegal in Ostkirchen. Es ging um Propaganda und Devisen, versteckte Botschaften, politische Manöver. Joachim Hentschel erzählt hier zum ersten Mal die ganze Geschichte dieser Zeit, spricht mit Zeitzeugen und beleuchtet die Hintergründe: Wer waren die Strippenzieher? Welche Rolle spielten Stasi, DDR-Kulturministerium und FDJ, westliche Plattenfirmen und Impresarios? Und wie viel trug der große Kulturhandel zur Wende von 1989 und zum Mauerfall bei?
