Concrete and steel, machines and industry, robots and artificiality, discipline and emotionlessness: the bands that preceded and came from Neue Deutsche Welle, such as Kraftwerk, DAF, Ideal, and Einstürzende Neubauten, focused on "coldness" in their performances, lyrics, and sounds in contrast to the "warmth" cult of the leftist alternative milieu, and influenced groups that would follow – like Rammstein – by staging the "cold German."
