    Abstract: "The Anthropology of Digital Practices connects for the first time three distinct research areas - digital ethnography, causal ethnography and media practice theory - to explore how we might track the effects of new media practices in a digital world. It invites media and communication students and scholars to overcome the field's old aversion to 'media effects' and explore the messy, complex, open-ended effects of new media practices in a digital age. Based on long-term ethnographic research and drawing from recent advances in the study of causality and ethnography, the book tells the 'formation story' of the anti-woke movement through a series of critical media events. It argues that media practices (e.g. podcasting, YouTubing, tweeting, commenting, broadcasting) will have 'formative' effects on an emerging social world at different points in time. One important task of the digital ethnographer is precisely to distinguish between the formative and non-formative effects of specific media practices. This book makes three contributions to our understanding of media practices in the digital era, namely a theoretical, methodological and empirical contribution. Theoretically, it furthers the 'practice turn' in media and communication studies by engaging with the latest thinking on causality and ethnography. Methodologically, it serves as a compelling, up-to-date guide to doing digital ethnography, with special reference to the study of digitally mediated practices. Empirically, it is the first book-length study of the anti-woke movement, a major actor in the 'culture wars' currently being fought across the Western world. With its accessible language and rich case studies, The Anthropology of Digital Practices will make an ideal supplementary textbook for a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods, digital ethnography/anthropology, and digital activism"--

A History of Fake Things on the Internet takes the long view of how advances in technology brought us to the point where faked texts, images, and video content are nearly indistinguishable from what is authentic or true. Computer scientist Walter J. Scheirer takes a deep dive into the origins of fake news, conspiracy theories, reports of the paranormal, and other deviations from reality that have become part of mainstream culture, from image manipulation in the nineteenth-century darkroom to the literary stylings of large language models like ChatGPT. Scheirer investigates the origins of Internet fakes, from early hoaxes that traversed the globe via Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs), USENET, and a new messaging technology called email, to today's hyperrealistic, AI-generated Deepfakes. An expert in machine learning and recognition, Scheirer breaks down the technical advances that made new developments in digital deception possible, and shares behind-the-screens details of early Internet-era pranks that have become touchstones of hacker lore. His story introduces us to the visionaries and mischief-makers who first deployed digital fakery and continue to influence how digital manipulation works--and doesn't--today: computer hackers, digital artists, media forensics specialists, and AI researchers. Ultimately, Scheirer argues that problems associated with fake content are not intrinsic properties of the content itself, but rather, stem from human behavior, demonstrating our capacity for both creativity and destruction"--

    Abstract: Die im Band versammelten Beiträge stellen die Geschichte queerer Lebensentwürfe dar - von ersten Emanzipationsbewegungen um die Jahrhundertwende über Selbstermächtigungsversuche in der Weimarer Republik bis hin zu der Zerstörung queerer Subkulturen unter dem nationalsozialistischen Regime und der fortdauernden Diskriminierung von LGBTIQ-Personen in der Nachkriegszeit. Seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert traten immer mehr Menschen selbstbewusst für die Anerkennung queerer Lebensweisen ein. Diese Pionierinnen bildeten Kollektive, verschafften sich Gehör und stellten dominante Geschlechterkategorien politisch, wissenschaftlich und künstlerisch infrage.     Abstract: This edited book takes an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on the complex dynamics involved in the incidence of online hate speech against migrants in user-generated contexts. The authors draw on case studies from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK, bringing together qualitative and quantitative analyses on user-generated online comments. The authors argue that online hate speech against migrants must be understood as a symptom of a representation crisis on migration, which can only be fully perceived through the study of the complex linguistic, interactional and connective processes within which it emerges. They focus on representations and shared meanings, community building and otherness, and delve into the role of network ecosystems in the process of the construction of public problems. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as academics working on hate speech and migration studies in a variety of fields, and can also contribute to improving research protocols for automated analyses and detections of online hate speech. Angeliki Monnier is Professor in Information and Communication Sciences at Université de Lorraine, Metz, France, and director of the Centre for Research on Mediations (CREM). Axel Boursier is Associate Professor in Information and Communication Sciences at CY Cergy Paris Université, France, and a member of the “Lexicons, Texts, Discourses and Dictionaries” (LT2D) laboratory. Annabelle Seoane is Associate Professor in Linguistics and Language Teaching at Université de Lorraine, Metz, France, and a member of the Centre for Research on Mediations (CREM).

    Abstract: The work in media cultural history is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. In it, bodies, desires and identities are constantly remodelled through the formation of difference. Therefore, male queerness here does not mean the representation of male homosexuality. Rather, it is the dynamic result of complex medial processes, in connection with affects and (self-)cognitions on and off screen. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition Performative Figuren queerer Männlichkeit by Christiane König, published by J.B.Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The author (with the friendly support of Megan Hanson) has subsequently revised the text further in an endeavour to refine the work stylistically. Durch Berücksichtigung jeweils verschiedener Phasen der DDR-Geschichte – von der SBZ und frühen DDR über die Ulbricht-Zeit bis zu Honecker und den 1980er Jahren – weist die Publikation zugleich auf Wandlungen und Entwicklungen wie auf mögliche Nischen und Freiräume hin. Reich illustriert, mit viel Quellenmaterial und einer ersten Gesamtbibliografie zeichnet der Band so ein vielschichtiges Bild einer immer wieder flexibel an politische Vorgaben angepassten, ganz eigenen DDR-Museumsgeschichte, mit der es heute in der gesamtdeutschen Museumslandschaft differenziert umzugehen gilt.

    Abstract: "Despite the widespread consensus that China's digital revolution was sure to bring about massive democratic reforms, such changes have not come to pass. While scholars and policy-makers alternate between predicting change and disparaging a stubbornly authoritarian regime, in this book, Shaohua Guo argues that this dichotomy misses the far more complex reality. "The Evolution of the Chinese Internet" traces the emergence and maturation of one of the most creative digital cultures in the world, through four major technological platforms that have marked trends in internet use over the past two decades: the bulletin board system, the blog, the microblog, and WeChat. Guo transcends typical narratives, structured around the binaries of freedom and control, to argue that Chinese internet culture displays a uniquely sophisticated interplay between multiple extremes, and that its vibrancy is dependent on these complex negotiations. In contrast to the flourishing of research findings on what is made invisible online, this book examines the driving mechanisms that grant visibility to particular kinds of user-generated content, offering a systematic account of how and why an ingenious Internet culture has been able to flourish. Guo highlights the pivotal roles that media institutions, technological platforms, and creative practices of Chinese netizens have played in shaping culture on- and offline"--

    Abstract: "The purpose of this book is to understand the nature of social media and the impact they are having on almost all aspects of modern-day existence from family life and social interactions to education and commerce. Just as fish are unaware of the water they swim in and we humans are unaware of the air that we breathe so it is that the users of social media are unaware of the effects of these media and take their existence as a natural part of their environment. We will make use of Marshall McLuhan's media ecology approach to understanding media. It is our intention to reveal the effects of social media on their users, how they are changing the nature of our social interactions and how we through our interaction with social media have become actual extensions of our social media, the reverse of McLuhan's notion that media are extensions of mankind. We will analyze the major social media apps including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tinder, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter and blogs. We also examine the Splinternet and the social media scene in Russia, China, North Korea, Vietnam and the Islamic world. We study the impacts of social media monopolies, the nature of advertising and branding in social media apps and the social media front in cyberwarfare. We close our study with an analysis of the social media counter revolution waged by players who actually helped to create social media"--

    Abstract: This book explores how news media construct social issues and events and thereby convey certain perceptions within the scope of framing theory. By operationalizing media framing as a process of interpretation through defining problem, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments and suggesting solutions, the book proposes a systematic and transparent approach to images in news discourse. Based on a frame analysis, it examines how German news media framed a list of China-related issues and events, and thereby conveyed particular beliefs and opinions on this country. Moreover, it investigates whether there were dominant patterns of interpretation and the extent to which diverse views were evident by comparing two major daily newspapers with opposite political orientations - the FAZ and the taz. Motivated by the relationship between image and reality, the book explores image formation and persistence from media construction of meaning and human cognitive complexity in perceiving others. Media select certain issues and events and then interpret them from particular perspectives. A variety of professional and non-professional factors behind news making may result in biased representations. In addition, from a social psychological perspective, inaccurate perceptions of foreign cultures may arise from categorical thinking, biased processing of stimulus information, intergroup conflicts of interest and in-group favoritism. Accordingly, whether media coverage deviates from reality is not the main concern of this book; instead, it emphasizes the underlying logics upon which the conclusions and judgments were drawn. It therefore contributes to a rational understanding of Western discourse and holds practical implications for both Chinese public diplomacy and a more constructive role of news media in promoting the understanding of others

    Abstract: Lesbian web series narrate female-centered stories, strengthen identity construction, and generate transnational communities beyond cultural barriers. Julia Obermayr explores the first definition of a new format, the first representations of lesbian women in US-American, Canadian, and Spanish web series from 2007 and onward, as well as their reciprocal effects regarding identity construction and community building of their transnational, mainly female, audience.The analyzed corpus comprises scenes taken from Venice the Series (2009) and its backstory »Otalia« on the soap opera Guiding Light (1952-2009), Seeking Simone (2009), Out With Dad (2010), Féminin/ Féminin (2014), Chica Busca Chica (2007) and its cinematic sequel De Chica En Chica (2015), as well as Notas Aparte (2016)
    Abstract: Biographical note: Julia Obermayr (Dr. phil.), born in 1981, did her doctorate at the University of Graz and in LGBT+ archives in Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal, Madrid, and Barcelona. She specializes in cultural studies, lesbian/LGBT studies and diversity, minority identities, and female representations in audiovisual media, mainly in Romance speaking Europe and the Americas

Journalists and their readers seem to need no explanation for the line, "The internet is made of cats." Everyone understands the joke, but few know how it started. A Unified Theory of Cats on the Internet is the first book to explore the history of how the cat became the internet's best friend. Internet cats can differ in dramatic ways, from the goth cats of Twitter to the glamourpusses of Instagram to the giddy, nonsensical silliness of Nyan Cat. But they all share common traits and values. Bringing together fun anecdotes, thoughtful analyses, and hidden histories of the communities that built the internet, Elyse White shows how japonisme, punk culture, cute culture, and the battle among different communities for the soul of the internet informed the sensibility of online felines. Internet cats offer a playful—and useful—way to understand how culture shapes and is shaped by technology.     Abstract: "Communist agriculture – from the perspective of the pig. In Communist Pigs, Thomas Fleischman traces the rise and fall of the German Democratic Republic from the perspective of one animal, Sus scrofa, or the pig. His goal is to offer a deeper understanding of the development of industrial agriculture in the twentieth century by looking at how the transformation from farm to factory occurred on the Communist side of the Iron Curtain. The pig occupied a key position in the regime's attempts to create and sustain a modern, industrial food system. (In the mid-1980s, East Germans consumed nearly 200 pounds of pork per capita each year.) The pig is an incredibly adaptive animal, and Fleischman follows pigs through three different social roles. First and foremost, the industrial pig, as the conditions of factory farming demanded a new breed that also reduced the species genetic diversity. But also the wild boar, whose overpopulation was a direct outgrowth of agricultural development rather than a conservation success story and the garden pig, reflecting the regime's shifting attitude toward private, small-scale farming. These animal histories reframe narratives about state socialism, the Cold War, and industrial agriculture. By paying attention to the factory farm, the backyard garden, and the industrial forest, we can see how East Germany's economy and environment became enmeshed within global exchanges of meat, grain, oil, and capital. Fleischman argues that agriculture under communism came to be indistinguishable from capitalist agriculture, and that pigs provide a clear case study of this convergence. It also sheds light on the reasons behind the GDR's environmental and political collapse, and acts as a warning about the high cost of cheap food in our present and future."

    Abstract: Seit dem 18. Jahrhundert erlebt die Institution Museum einen unvergleichlichen Aufschwung, der in den vergangenen Jahren insbesondere in Europa und in China zu einer Gründungswelle und einer Neukonzeption etablierter Einrichtungen geführt hat. Zugleich entwickelte sich die Expositorik zu einer eigenen Disziplin. Begriff und Phänomen des Kulturerbes bilden eine scheinbar gegenläufige Bewegung zwischen lokalen, regionalen und nationalen Bezügen einerseits und globalen, das gesamte Erbe der Menschheit repräsentierenden Stätten andererseits. Es deutet sich darin eine neue Kulturentwicklung an, die mit dem Etikett der Glokalisierung belegt ist. Der Band beleuchtet die komplexen Entwicklungen und Theorien aus verschiedenen Perspektiven und anhand von aktuellen Fallbeispielen.

    Abstract: Today many Germans remain nostalgic about "classic" film comedies created during the 1930s, viewing them as a part of the Nazi era that was not tainted with antisemitism. In Antisemitism in Film Comedy in Nazi Germany, Valerie Weinstein scrutinizes these comic productions and demonstrates that film comedy, despite its innocent appearance, was a critical component in the effort to separate "Jews" from "Germans" physically, economically, and artistically. Weinstein highlights how the German propaganda ministry used directives, pre- and post-production censorship, financial incentives, and influence over film critics and their judgments to replace Jewish "wit" with a slower, simpler, and more direct German "humor" that affirmed values that the Nazis associated with the Aryan race. Through contextualized analyses of historical documents and individual films, Weinstein reveals how humor, coded hints and traces, absences, and substitutes in Third Reich film comedy helped spectators imagine an abstract "Jewishness" and a "German" identity and community free from the former. As resurgent populist nationalism and overt racism continue to grow around the world today, Weinstein's study helps us rethink racism and prejudice in popular culture and reconceptualize the relationships between film humor, national identity, and race.
