    Abstract: Die Romaria zu Ehren des heiligen Bartholomäus, der als Helfer gegen die "Besessenheit" (Epilepsie, Furcht, Stottern) gilt, findet am 24. August statt. Inhalt dieses Festes sind die Opfergabe von schwarzen Hühnern und das sakrale Tauchen der Kinder im Meer.
    Abstract: Romaria is a religious festivity celebrated in honour of a saint or of a divine intercessor. Characteristic of romarias is a certain religious attitude, which finds expression in the connection of sacred and profane acts. Most of the romarias are held in summer; that of S. Bartolomew do Mar takes place on August 24th. The substance of this romaria is the offering of chickens in the church as well as the "holy dipping" into the sea. Today both concern but children and pass for a remedy for fear.

    Abstract: Ein Fischer aus Caponga fertigt mit Beil, Dechsel, Hobel, Säge und Bohrer das Holzkreuz für einen Grundanker für das Jangada-Balkenfloß, setzt Führungsstangen in vorgebohrte Löcher, sucht einen Felsbrocken, haut ihn mit Hammer und Axt rauh zu, legt ihn auf das Holzkreuz und klemmt ihn zwischen die oben zusammengebundenen Führungsstangen.
    Abstract: A fisherman from Caponga (Ceará) shows the manufacture of the fateixa stone anchor for his "jangada"-raft. He first carves the wooden cross and drills holes for the guiding-sticks, which he then puts in. Later he goes to the shore, where he looks for a suitable rock to be shaped into a stone anchor. If the stone fits, he sets it upon the wooden cross and fixes it with the bars, which he finally ties together with a string.

    Abstract: The film shows sequences of the commemorative festivities in Desa, the last part of a Rumanian national custom carried out in three parts. At Easter it begins with the offering of the sarindar and in September the second part, a water ceremony, takes place. The commemorative festivities end on the 24th and 25th October with a banquet and a mask procession.

    Abstract: Ausschnitte eines Kultfestes mit Ritualhandlungen und Kulttänzen: Spielen auf kultischen Musikinstrumenten (Trommel, Pauken), Prostration, Anrufungen, Gebetsgesänge, ekstatische Tänze der Frauen vor dem Altar, Opfergaben.
    Abstract: Belief in ghosts and cult dances still play a part today in many ritual acts of the Mahayana-Buddhism of Vietnam. The ceremonies portrayed in this film in a Pagoda near Huê are initiated by a Buddhistic priest. The further development of the dance, however, is dominated by "possessed women" dancing before the altar. They claim to have been visited by ghosts and ordered to dance for them. During the ecstatic dances the women fall into trance-like state of mind and swing in their hands various magical attributes such as knives, clubs, sticks and so on which give an indication of the ghosts which they incarnate. In many rituals of these types the women also make predictions and distribute curative amulettes to the believers.

    Abstract: Zweitägige Fußwallfahrt am Pfingstsamstag und -sonntag von Holzkirchen bis zum Bogenberg (etwa 70 km). Mitgeführt wird eine 13 m lange "Kerze", ein mit roten Wachssträngen umwickelter Fichtenstamm.
    Abstract: The pilgrimage to the Bogenberg is an impressive survival of the baroque peregrinatio. The film shows the whole procession from Holzkirchen near Vilshofen, along the Danube to the Bogenberg north-east of Straubing (70 km). On this pilgrimage a 13 m long "candle" is carried along with from the town of Bogen to the church of pilgrimage on top of the Bogenberg. This candle is the trunk of a pine-tree covered with stripes of red wax. The film lays a special emphasis on the documentation of the length of this pilgrimage.

    Abstract: Nach Auswahl und Fällen eines Baumes beim Dorf Mayongo und der Geschenkübergabe an den Holzschnitzer tritt kurz eine Gruppe Jugendlicher mit einer Grasmaske auf. Dem Aushöhlen und Zurichten der Maske mit Wange, Schnabel und "Hörnern" folgt die Verzierung mit Erdfarben und Brandmalerei. Nach dem Flechten einer Halskrause und der Herstellung eines Bastkleides Vorführung der Maske.
    Abstract: The procedure begins with circling round the chosen tree, followed by its felling; then come the handing over of gifts to the sculptor, and the marking and cutting to length of the section of tree trunk reserved for the mask. In the meanwhile, a group of young men has appeared with a grass mask. Then the block of wood is hollowed out to provide room for the bearer of the mask's head, the cheeks and beak are carved, and a slit is pierced for the eyes. Holes are burned into the neck-edge with the glowing end of a spear. Once the "horns" are made, the mask is painted and the neck collar knotted. Ears and eyes are also fitted on. Finally, a mask-dress is made with strips of bast, and the finishing touch consists in sewing the collar on to the neck-part of the mask. Right at the end, one of the two sculptors slips the mask on and makes a short appearance.

    Abstract: Drei Bräuche am Vorabend des Epiphanias: 1. Maulgabe mit Sakramentalien für Rinder und Pferde. 2. Haus und Stall werden mit benediziertem Weihrauch ausgesegnet, mit Weihwasser besprengt; die Stubentür wird mit den Anfangsbuchstaben der drei Königsnamen und der Jahreszahl versehen. 3. Sampermilch (Semmel mit warmer Milch) wird aufgetischt (Rest für Schweine und Hühner).
    Abstract: The film shows three customs practised on the farms of the thinly settled Lower Alps area of Austria on the evening before the Feast of the Three Wise Men. Between the work (feeding, milking) and the evening meal, the animals are given a so-called Maulgab (Mouth Offering) with churchlike sacraments which is meant to work as a prophylactic against ghosts. Later the house is blessed with consecrated incense. And lastly so-called Sampermilch for a Berchte figure which is supposed to appear as a ghost in the night, is prepared and set out. A few spoonsful of this is eaten and the remainder fed to the pigs and poultry the next morning.

    Abstract: Am Tage des hl. Leonhard (6. Nov.) ziehen Wagen, Reiter und kleine Gruppen zu Fuß von Murnau nach der Leonhardskirche Froschhausen, wo eine Feldmesse abgehalten wird. Danach versammeln sich die Teilnehmer vor der Gastwirtschaft; hier treten auch die Goaßlschnalzer mit ihren langen Peitschen in Aktion.
    Abstract: Since 1927 the St. Leonard's pilgrimage in Murnau has taken place, and it is arranged after the known pilgrimage of Bad Tölz. On the day of St. Leonard (6th November) people on carriages, on horses and others walking in small groups are moving from Murnau to the nerby church St. Leonard in Froschhausen where a camp-service is celebrated on a meadow near the church. After the mass the participants meet in front of the only inn of the village and there perform the so-called Goaßlschnalzer (men with long whips).

    Abstract: Der Film dokumentiert den Ablauf von Tauf-, Hochzeits- und Begräbnisfeiern bei deutschen und rumänischen Bevölkerungsgruppen. Er untersucht die sozialen und religiösen Hintergründe der Familienbräuche, erläutert die Rolle der Taufpaten im Leben ihrer Patenkinder und befaßt sich mit der Bedeutung tradierter Verhaltensweisen im Rumänien der Gegenwart.
    Abstract: The film documents the course of baptism, wedding and funeral ceremonies of German and Romanian population groups. It examines the social and religious background of family customs, explains the role of godfathers in the life of their godchildren and discusses the meaning of traditions in the Romania of today.

    Abstract: Der Dorfhäuptling von Shivankoreni erhitzt, entrindet und trocknet frische, ein bis zwei Finger dicke Lianenabschnitte im Feuer. Zwei Stücke schneidet er zu Herd und Quirl, schabt die Epidermis eines Pfeilrohres als Zunder ab, hält den Herd mit dem Unterschenkel fest und dreht den Quirl rasch mit beiden Handflächen, bis der Zunder zu rauchen beginnt.
    Abstract: Abraham, the village chieftain of Shivankoreni, dries pieces of liana at the fire. Then he cuts two pieces of liana into a tinderbox (twirling stick and hearth). The epidermis scraped off the sharpened tube serves as tinder. The piece of liana with the pointed end (twirling stick) is placed in the notch or hollow of the piece (hearth) on the floor. The hearth is held in place by the chieftain's legs. Abraham turns the twirling stick quickly with both palms, holding the twirling stick at the top and letting his hands gradually slide down; then he immediately grasps the stick at the top again and continues to turn, until the tinder begins to smoke. He blows on the tinder and puts a dry leaf on it; this begins to burn.

    Abstract: Anläßlich eines muslimischen Festes tanzen Frauen und Mädchen in Gruppen und einzeln im Kreis um zwei Trommler, die sich teilweise im Wechselspiel mit den Frauen und Mädchen am Tanz beteiligen. Während des Tanzes steigert sich der Rhythmus.
    Abstract: On the occasion of a Muslim feast women and girls are dancing alone and in groups around two drummers who join the dance in rotation. The rhythm increases during the dance.
