    Abstract: The purpose of this book is to showcase a diverse set of directions in empirical research on mediated discourse, reflecting on the state-of-the-art and the increasing intersection between Corpus-based Interpreting Studies (CBIS) and Corpus-based Translation Studies (CBTS). Undeniably, data from the European Parliament (EP) offer a great opportunity for such research. Not only does the institution provide a sizeable sample of oral debates held at the EP together with their simultaneous interpretations into all languages of the European Union. It also makes available written verbatim reports of the original speeches, which used to be translated. From a methodological perspective, EP materials thus guarantee a great degree of homogeneity, which is particularly valuable in corpus studies, where data comparability is frequently a challenge. In this volume, progress is visible in both CBIS and CBTS. In interpreting, it manifests itself notably in the availability of comprehensive transcription, annotation and alignment systems. In translation, datasets are becoming substantially richer in metadata, which allow for increasingly refined multi-factorial analysis. At the crossroads between the two fields, intermodal investigations bring to the fore what these mediation modes have in common and how they differ. The volume is thus aimed in particular at Interpreting and Translation scholars looking for new descriptive insights and methodological approaches in the investigation of mediated discourse, but it may be also of interest for (corpus) linguists analysing parliamentary discourse in general

    Abstract: This handbook provides a comprehensive account of the languages spoken in Ethiopia, exploring their structures and their function and use in society. It offers overviews of individual languages, many of them less documented, as well as detailed studies of specific aspects of language use in Ethiopia.
    Abstract: "Ethiopia - a country in the Horn of Africa - hosts about 100 million people speaking more than eighty languages belonging to the Cushitic, Omotic, Nilo-Saharan, and Semitic languages families (CSA 2013: 28; Meyer & Richter 2003: 23-29; Eberhard, Simons & Fennig 2019). Speakers of these languages have been in contact for a long time resulting in widespread bi- and multilingualism and in the creation of regional and national lingua francas. Eventually, this situation yielded the Ethiopian Linguistic Area whose features are still open for ongoing discussion (see Crass & Meyer 2008). In 1991, the Ethiopian government established a policy promoting the use of all Ethiopian languages in primary education and local administration. Since then, research on Ethiopian languages has experienced an unprecedented expansion and has become a major field of study for the new generation of Ethiopian linguists (see Bulakh et al. 2019: 98-106). Despite the remarkable amount of research on individual Ethiopian languages, language groups and sociolinguistic topics over the last few decades, the most frequently cited general reference works on Ethiopian languages and linguistics still remain Bender et al. (1976a) and Bender (1976a), which obviously no longer represent the state of the art. These two works have remained easily available in Ethiopia and beyond over the last forty years, and are written in a very accessible descriptive-linguistic style so they are also frequently used by students of Ethiopian linguistics. Moreover, they combine information on sociolinguistic, historical linguistic, and applied linguistic issues with basic linguistic descriptions of Ethiopian languages. More recent handbooks, such as Kaye (1997; 2007), Hetzron (1997) or its second edition by Huehnergard & Pat-El (2019), and Weninger (2011a), focus only on Semitic languages, and thus lack information on the other language families found in Ethiopia. The Encyclopedia Aethiopica (Uhlig & Bausi 2003-2014) - the most up-to-date general reference work on Ethiopia - also contains information on Ethiopian languages but usually only in the form of very brief, fairly standardized entries that provide basic information on the phonology, morphology and syntax. Handbooks on African languages like Heine et al. (1981), Heine & Nurse (2000; 2008), Güldemann (2018), and Wolff (2019) also deal with various Ethiopian languages but do not provide a comprehensive description of them and their subgroups. Edzard (2012) and Frajzyngier & Shay (2012) deal with genetic and typological aspects of Afroasiatic and its major groups; Edzard (2012) also contains short grammatical descriptions of a very few languages. However, the language descriptions are very selective, and information on sociolinguistic issues is inadequate"--

    Abstract: In most grammatical models, hierarchical structuring and dependencies are considered as central features of grammatical structures, an idea which is usually captured by the notion of “head” or “headedness”. While in most models, this notion is more or less taken for granted, there is still much disagreement as to the precise properties of grammatical heads and the theoretical implications that arise of these properties. Moreover, there are quite a few linguistic structures that pose considerable challenges to the notion of “headedness”. Linking to the seminal discussions led in Zwicky (1985) and Corbett, Fraser, & Mc-Glashan (1993), this volume intends to look more closely upon phenomena that are considered problematic for an analysis in terms of grammatical heads. The aim of this book is to approach the concept of “headedness” from its margins. Thus, central questions of the volume relate to the nature of heads and the distinction between headed and non-headed structures, to the process of gaining and losing head status, and to the thought-provoking question as to whether grammar theory could do without heads at all. The contributions in this volume provide new empirical findings bearing on phenomena that challenge the conception of grammatical heads and/or discuss the notion of head/headedness and its consequences for grammatical theory in a more abstract way. The collected papers view the topic from diverse theoretical perspectives (among others HPSG, Generative Syntax, Optimality Theory) and different empirical angles, covering typological and corpus-linguistic accounts, with a focus on data from German

Solchen Interferenzen, Kongruenzen und Differenzen von faktualen und fiktionalen Erzählungen wendet sich das von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft finanzierte Graduiertenkolleg 1767 mit dem Titel "Faktuales und fiktionales Erzählen" seit 2012 zu. Die politischen Krisen der Gegenwart (Klimawandel, Migration, Pandemie) verlangen nach globalen und ganzheitlichen Lösungen, während Ganzheit aufgrund der Totalitarismuserfahrungen des 20. Jahrhunderts zugleich eine in Verruf geratene Kategorie ist. Dieser Spannung haben sich die Geisteswissenschaften seit einigen Jahren verstärkt zu stellen versucht. Galt das Ganze v. a. der Idealismuskritik lange als suspekt, geht die Verabschiedung überkommener Totalitätsmodelle derzeit oft mit der Erprobung neuer Vorstellungen von Ganzheit einher. Ausgehend von diesem Befund fragt der Band nach der inneren Organisation, den Ausdrucksweisen und den Formen, die das Ganze konzeptionell überhaupt erst generieren. Neben begriffsgeschichtlichen Überblicken etwa zu ‚System‘, ‚Organismus‘, ‚Aggregat‘ oder ‚Gestalt‘ werden dabei die historischen Konjunkturen einer genuinen Vielfalt des Ganzen in der philosophischen, ökologischen, literarischen und poetologischen Tradition untersucht.

Le constat final est donc plutôt mesuré : bien souvent, les images ne suffisent pas - et il demeure un passionnant intervalle entre les images et le récit. Ce livre propose plusieurs investigations détaillées, de l'Europe à la Chine en passant par le monde himalayen et tibétain, à propos de Vies de Bouddha ou Vies de Jésus, des Rois des Enfers et de visites de Parcs impériaux - et même une enquête après une inondation catastrophique !

    Abstract: The analysis and understanding of multilingualism, and its relationship to identity in the face of globalization, migration and the increasing dominance of English as a lingua franca, makes it a complex and challenging problem that requires insights from a range of disciplines. With reference to a variety of languages and contexts, this book offers fascinating insights into multilingual identity from a team of world-renowned scholars, working from a range of different theoretical and methodological perspectives. Three overarching themes are explored - situatedness, identity practices, and investment - and detailed case studies from different linguistic and cultural contexts are included throughout. The chapter authors' consideration of 'multilingualism-as-resource' challenges the conception of 'multilingualism-as-problem', which has dogged so much political thinking in late modernity. The studies offer a critical lens on the types of linguistic repertoire that are celebrated and valued, and introduce the policy implications of their findings for education and wider social issues

Differences between the two languages with respect to the processing of morphonotactic (MPH) vs. phonotactic (PH) consonant clusters are shown for the first time, the linguistically challenging claim that differences between MPH and PH are also realized phonetically is refuted, and the importance of the relative morphological richness of a language is illustrated

Focusing on the latter, this volume discusses the characteristics and dynamics of urban language use, considering aspects such as contact, variation and change, as well as identity, indexicality, and attitudes, but also spatial factors including mobility, urbanisation/counter-urbanisation, or diffusion processes. The collected articles provide an update of first wave approaches, but also establish a connection to third wave research for readers from a broad range of fields, especially sociolinguistics, variationist linguistics, and dialectology. The book presents modern methodological and conceptual ideas as well as new findings but also serves as a reference work, combining theoretical discussions with results from recent empirical studies"--

    Abstract: Es gibt Mythen des Entscheidens, die immer wieder erzählt werden, wie beispielsweise die Entscheidung von Adam und Eva im Paradies, vom Baum der Erkenntnis zu essen, das Urteil des Paris, Herakles am Scheideweg oder Buridans Esel, der sich zwischen zwei Heuhaufen nicht entscheiden kann und deshalb zugrunde geht. Der aus dem Münsteraner Sonderforschungsbereich 1150 »Kulturen des Entscheidens« hervorgegangene interdisziplinäre Tagungsband untersucht das Verhältnis von Mythos, Narration und Entscheiden. Er setzt in Mythos und Literatur erzählte Entscheidensszenarien in Bezug zu modernen Theorien des Entscheidens und fragt nach ihrer Funktion sowie den Veränderungen in unterschiedlichen historischen und kulturellen Kontexten. Analysiert werden einerseits Entscheidenssituationen, die in Mythen dargestellt werden; andererseits wird auch deutlich, in welcher Weise Mythen selbst Entscheidensdispositive darstellen. Die Beiträge des Bandes zeigen, wie Entscheidensmythen und -narrative der Kontingenzbewältigung dienen und betonen den sozialen Handlungscharakter des Entscheidens.

    Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive overview of current research in African languages, drawing on insights from anthropological linguistics, typology, historical and comparative linguistics, and sociolinguistics. Africa is believed to host at least one-third of the world’s languages, usually classified into four phyla—Niger-Congo, Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, and Khoisan—which are then subdivided into further families and subgroupings. This volume explores all aspects of research in the field, beginning with chapters that cover the major domains of grammar and comparative approaches. Later parts provide overviews of the phyla and subfamilies, alongside grammatical sketches of eighteen representative African languages of diverse genetic affiliation.     Abstract: This volume offers an introduction to current research in event structure, the study of the role of events in grammar. This area of study breaks down into several interrelated questions: How do we perceive events? How do events as objects of perception relate to linguistic event descriptions? What structural distinctions can we make among events, and how are these distinctions reflected grammatically? How do events relate to their participants? To what extent does syntax constrain the grammar of event descriptions? The handbook reflects the growth of this field, from three foundational hypotheses: that action sentences are predicates of event variables (Davidson), that verb meanings can be divided into a small number of aspectual classes (Vendler), and that verb meanings can be partly decomposed into a small set of recurring primitives (Lakoff, McCawley). Part I considers the implications of the Davidsonian event variable for aspects of natural language metaphysics; Part II considers the relationship of event structure to morphosyntax; Part III focuses on crosslinguistic variation in event descriptions; and Part IV covers less narrowly grammatical aspects of event structure.

    Abstract: Every language has been influenced in some way by other languages through contact-induced linguistic change. Potentially any features can be transferred from one language to another if the sociolinguistic and structural circumstances are right. New languages - pidgins, creoles and mixed languages - can come into being as the result of language contact. This book examines the various forms of contact-induced linguistic change and the levels of language which have provided instances of these influences

    Abstract: Morphology, the science of words, is a complex theoretical landscape, where a multitude of frameworks, each with their own tenets and formalism, compete for the explanation of linguistic facts. The Oxford Handbook of Morphological Theory is a comprehensive guide through this jungle of morphological theories. It provides a rich and up-to-date overview of theoretical frameworks, from Structuralism to Optimality Theory and from Minimalism to Construction Morphology. In the core part of the handbook (Part II), each theory is introduced by a practitioner, who guides the reader through its principles and technicalities, its advantages and disadvantages. All chapters are written to be accessible, authoritative, and critical. Cross-references reveal agreements and disagreements among frameworks, and a rich body of references encourages further reading. As well as introducing individual theories, the volume speaks to the bigger picture. Part I identifies time-honoured issues in word-formation and inflection that have set the theoretical scene. Part III connects morphological theory to other fields of linguistics. These include typology and creole linguistics, diachronic change and synchronic variation, first and second language acquisition, psycho-/neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, and sign language theory. Each of these fields informs and challenges morphological theory in particular ways. By linking specialist data and insights from the various subfields, the volume fosters the dialogue among sub-disciplines that is much needed for a graceful integration of linguistic thinking.
