Abstract: This book provides an overview of the linguistic situation in Brunei, including a historical overview and a synopsis of the current education system. It investigates pronunciation, particularly the intelligibility of Brunei English and the vowels of Brunei Mandarin, and it also describes the acquisition of Malay grammar, Malay politeness strategies, the use of language online, language in the courts, a comparison of Malay and English newspapers, the language of shop signs, the status of Dusun, and lastly, English literature in Brunei. “This kaleidoscopic collection of reports of language use in Brunei demonstrates that Brunei is ‘A Kingdom of Unexpected Linguistic Diversity’, a diversity represented by varieties of Malay, Chinese dialects, English and indigenous languages including Kedayan, Dusun, Tutong, Murut and Iban. The chapters show how these languages operate in social interactions, education, the courtroom, the media, on the web, and in literature. Brunei’s linguistic diversity and the relationships between its indigenous languages and Malay, Chinese and English exemplify the complex interplay of local and global discourses. Readers of this book - and these should be all those interested in linguistic diversity as well as language policy makers and planners - will come to recognise how linguistic diversity supplies the vital cultural energy that enables human communities to thrive and how this cultural energy is under threat of being extinguished as indigenous language struggle to maintain their status and roles in society.” Professor Andy Kirkpatrick, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia

Abstract: This detailed survey of Brunei English reflects the burgeoning academic interest in the many new varieties of English which are fast evolving around the world. Wholly up to date, the study is based on careful analysis of a substantial dataset that provides real-life examples of usage to illustrate the narrative throughout. As well as a thorough account of the pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary usage, and discourse patterns of Brunei English, the volume explores its historical and educational background and current developmental trends, providing an in-depth review of the patterns of English usage within this multilingual, oil-rich society on the north-western coast of Borneo. Written in a non-technical style throughout that will assist non-specialists wishing to grasp the fundamentals of this unique brand of the English language, the work is a worthy addition to Springer’s series on multilingual education that plugs a gap in the coverage of the numerous varieties of English being used across South East Asia. “The authors bring renewed and badly needed attention to the long-overlooked development of Brunei English. Their examination of the variety not only documents the features and functions of English within Brunei society, it also suggests the development of regional or global varieties of English that extend beyond Brunei, and even beyond South East Asia.” Andrew Moody, University of Macau

Abstract: English in Malaysia: Current Use and Status offers an account of the English language used in present-day West and East Malaysia and its status anchored in different linguistic, social and educational domains. After an Introduction giving a bird's eye view of the status of English in Malaysia, the eight main chapters offer case studies revolving around four themes: i. linguistic features, with special focus on pronunciation and language contact; ii. language attitudes; iii. English in on-line discourse; and iv. English and language policies. The chapters cover original data and topics, seeking to draw an accurate portrait of Malaysian English, a non-native variety of postcolonial English that is currently developing its pronunciation, grammar, lexis and distinct identity
