    Abstract: "Citizenship is a fantasy of political community without others. How is it faring in today's world of authoritarianism, failed states, and climate crisis? In a world where democratic experiment is, by now, a networked and global proposition? What might we learn from music - and from ethnomusicology? The relationship between the idea of citizenship and music is long-standing, but it has not yet been looked at from a perspective informed by postcolonialism and today's decolonizing debates. The case studies in this volume are, consequently, drawn from across Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Its first chapter locates the current ethnomusicological interest in citizenship in broad critical landscape, focusing on approaches to audience, media, voice and performance. The second surveys a growing body of recent ethnomusicological literature on citizenship, theorized in terms of identity, technocracy, and intimacy. The third comprises case studies developing an approach to citizenship and political subjectivity beyond conventional liberal categories, defined by mobility ('the citizen on his bike'), collectivity ('the citizen in the crowd') and activism ('the citizen in the square'). The conclusion offers an argument about the implications for citizenship studies of today's thinking in ethnomusicology, musicology and sound studies, reflecting on the hardening rhetoric of political belonging in Europe."

    Abstract: In the Hobsbawmian long 19th century, gender and processes of sexualization and feminization have been crucial in the construction of the »Jewish Other«. Ulrike Brunotte explores how these processes came about by addressing imaginative, aesthetic, and epistemological questions. She analyzes how literature, psychoanalysis and the performing arts traverse and react to the ambivalence of racialized stereotypes. The »femininity puzzle« presents itself in two ways: first in the role of effeminization of the male Jew in antisemitic discourse, and then in the transgressive forms of femininity connected to Jewish women, especially the allosemitic Orientalization in the figure of the »Beautiful Jewess«

Gleichzeitig wird die Bewegung oft als antisemitisch klassifiziert, was zu der Frage führt: Können Antisemitismen auch im Namen der Menschenrechte formuliert werden?     Abstract: "Social movements are important means of bringing about political and cultural changes through collective action. The study of social movements helps us to understand how movements can achieve change, as well as how they are limited in doing so, by examining political and cultural opportunities and obstacles, organizational dynamics, resources, collective action frames, and strategies and tactics. The field of social movements is an exciting one, and scholars continue to produce new studies of a wide array of social movements in many different countries, while activists also regularly provide accounts of their experiences in social movements. Relevant to both activists and social scientists, the area is one that students find important and interesting. Given the proliferation of social movement scholarship in recent decades, it is a daunting task to attempt to capture the field in a short book. Thus, my goal is simply to introduce students and other readers to some interesting history, ideas, and questions about social movements. No single researcher can be an expert on all of the many social movements that might be covered in such a book, and I have limited myself to some of the movements that I have followed for many years in teaching and researching in the area. The book began with a Canadian edition, and later second and third Canadian editions, published by Oxford University Press Canada, which con-tain much more Canadian content. Some of this material, as well as material on other countries, remains in the American editions, but they include a lot more material on the United States. In the American editions of the book, I added a chapter on right-wing movements, which are particularly important in the United States. I also considered adding a chapter on the civil rights movement, which is obviously very important as well to the United States, but I decided instead to expand somewhat the material on the civil rights movement in my chapter on the protest cycle of the 1960s. My rationale for doing this instead of including a whole chapter on the civil rights movement is that there is so much excellent scholarship available on the movement that instructors can easily use to supplement my brief treatment. Hopefully, students will find this selection of contemporary protest movements interesting and will learn enough about theoretical ideas and approaches to movements to be able to apply this knowledge to other movements of interest"--

    Abstract: Gemeinsam gärtnern, subsistent werden, Stadt gestalten, Kunst leben und zugleich über den utopischen Sinn oder Unsinn dieses Tuns nachdenken - das war die Devise des Nachbarschaftsgartens »Keimzelle« (2011-2019) in Hamburg. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes liefern in diesem Kontext eine theoretisch fundierte wie künstlerisch anschauliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem transformativen Potenzial von urbanen Räumen des Selbermachens.     Abstract: The concept of »postmigration« has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of »postmigration« and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, they highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Music and Advertising assembles an array of 42 pathbreaking chapters on the production, texts, and reception of advertising through music. The chapters on production study the factors, activities, and people behind the music for the marketing pitch, both past and present. The section on Text focuses on analytic and historical approaches to ads in various media, and includes commentaries on musical genres in ads ranging from Western European art music to American popular genre. The last section addressing "Reception" involves the formulation of models and theories, and implementation of research methods to examine how the presence of music may influence peoples' attitudes, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in the context of advertisements and within service environments such as stores, restaurants, and banks.

    Abstract: The first half of the volume is devoted to the exposition of the ancient evidence, literary and iconographic, for the traditions of Heracles' life and deeds. After a chapter each on the hero's childhood and his madness, the canonical cause of his Twelve Labors, each of the Labors themselves receives detailed treatment in a dedicated chapter. The "Parerga" or "Side-Labors" are then treated in a similar level of detail in seven further chapters. In the second half, the Heracles tradition is analysed from a range of thematic perspectives. After consideration of the contrasting projections of the figure across the major literary genres, epic, tragedy, comedy, philosophy, and in the iconographic register, a number of his myth-cycle's diverse fils rouges are pursued.

They claimed it as a marker of black Atlantic connections and of cosmopolitanism untethered from European colonial relations. Today, Cuban/African bands popular in Africa in the 1960s and '70s have moved into the world music scene in Europe and North America, and world music producers and musicians have created new West African-Latin American collaborations expressly for this market niche. This book follows two of these bands, Orchestra Baobab and AfroCubism, and the industry and audiences that surround them-from musicians' homes in West Africa, to performances in Europe and North America, to record label offices in London. This book examines the intensely transnational experiences of musicians, industry personnel, and audiences as they collaboratively produce, circulate, and consume music in a specific post-colonial era of globalization. Musicians, industry personnel, and audiences work with and push against one another as they engage in personal collaborations imbued with histories of global travel and trade. They move between and combine Cuban and Malian melodies, Norwegian and Senegalese markets, and histories of slavery and independence as they work together to create international commodities. Understanding the unstable and dynamic ways these peoples, musics, markets, and histories intersect elucidates how world music actors assert their places within, and produce knowledge about, global markets, colonial histories, and the black Atlantic. This book offers a nuanced view of a global industry that is informed and deeply marked by diverse transnational perspectives and histories of transatlantic exchange. ""--

    Abstract: Global health politics has emerged over the last two decades as a distinct, interdisciplinary field of study which is beginning to demonstrate signs of maturity. It is concerned with the actions, practices, and policies that govern the sphere of global health. The field addresses not only the processes of decision-making, but also the structures of power that shape what is possible and the requirement for collective action to address global problems. Politics is unavoidable, necessary, and integral to effectively addressing global health challenges. The study of global health politics therefore is not about how to minimise interference in rational decision-making, but rather about explaining and improving the quality of political institutions and processes that will, in turn, improve global health action and, ultimately, outcomes.

    Abstract: Most historians rely principally on written sources. Yet there are other traces of the past available to historians: the material things that people have chosen, made, and used. This book examines how material culture can enhance historians' understanding of the past, both worldwide and across time. The successful use of material culture in history depends on treating material things of many kinds not as illustrations, but as primary evidence. Each kind of material thing requires the application of interpretive skills appropriate to it. These skills overlap with those acquired by scholars in disciplines that may abut history but are often relatively unfamiliar to historians, including anthropology, archaeology, and art history. Historians can adapt and apply the same skills they honed while studying more traditional text-based sources even as they borrow methods from these fields.

    Abstract: Social media platforms do not just circulate political ideas, but support computational propaganda and manipulative disinformation campaigns. Although some of these disinformation campaigns are carried out directly by individuals, most are waged by software, commonly known as bots, programmed to perform simple, repetitive, robotic tasks. Including case studies from nine countries and covering propaganda efforts over a wide array of social media platforms, this text argues that bots, fake accounts, and social media algorithms amount to a new political communications mechanism that it terms 'computational propaganda.'

    Abstract: Dieses Heft geht »Mapping« als Ausdruck spezifischer Raum-, Gesellschafts- und Wissensordnungen in unterschiedlichen historischen Kontexten und aus der Perspektive verschiedener Disziplinen nach. Sich im Denken orientieren heißt nach Immanuel Kant immer auch, sich im Raum zu orientieren. Karten sind Orientierungsmittel, mit denen wir die Welt wahrnehmen, sie uns zurechtlegen und damit gleichzeitig ordnen und schaffen. Mit dem Begriff »Mapping« kommen die Herstellung und Verwendung von Karten, aber auch andere Medien und Techniken der Orientierung und Raumproduktion in den Blick. Der Debattenteil ist dem Gewicht der Bücher in den Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften gewidmet.

    Abstract: This handbook takes on the task of examining the history of music listening over the past two hundred years. It uses the "art of listening" as a leitmotif encompassing an entanglement of interdependent practices and discourses about a learnable mode of perception. The art of listening first emerged around 1800 and was adopted and adapted across the public realm to suit a wide range of collective listening situations from popular to serious art forms up to the present day. Because this is a relatively new subject in historical research, the volume combines case studies from several disciplines in order to investigate whether, how, and why practices of music listening changed. Focusing on a diverse set of locations and actors and using a range of historical sources, it attempts to historicize and reconstruct the evolution of listening styles to show the wealth of variants in listening.

    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Evolution, Biology, and Society explores a growing area within sociology: research that uses theory and/or methods from biology. The essays in this handbook integrate current research from all strands of this new and developing area. The first section of this book has essays that address the history of the use of method and theory from biology in the social sciences; the second section has papers on evolutionary approaches to social psychology; the third section has chapters describing research on the interaction of genes (and other biochemicals such as hormones) and environmental contexts on a variety of outcomes of sociological interest; and the fourth section includes papers that apply evolutionary theory to areas of traditional concern to sociologists-including the family, fertility, sex and gender, religion, crime, and race and ethnic relations.

    Abstract: While concepts of Earth have a rich tradition, more recent examples show a distinct quality: Though ideas of wholeness might still be related to mythical, religious, or utopian visions of the past, "Earth" itself has become available as a whole. This raises several questions: How are the notions of one Earth or our Planet imagined and distributed? What is the role of cultural imagination and practices of signification in the imagination of "the Earth"? Which theoretical models can be used or need to be developed to describe processes of imagining Planet Earth? This collection invites a wide range of perspectives from different fields of the Humanities to explore the means of imagining Earth.

It brings together many of the top researchers in the field who explain how the prostitution markets are organized across space and time, the role of technology in shaping labor supply and demand, the intersection of prostitution with trafficking, and the optimal use of law enforcement.     Abstract: In den letzten Jahren ist die Popkultur wieder vermehrt von Naturbezügen geprägt. In Songs, Filmen, Romanen, in der Auseinandersetzung mit Vergemeinschaftungen und dem eigenen Körper tauchen Wälder, Folkgitarren und grüne Hipster auf. Doch diese Phänomene sind keine naive Rückkehr zur Hippiekultur - sie werden zu dem der Popkultur ganz eigenen Spiel mit den gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen. Dabei nehmen sie sowohl utopisches Aufbegehren als auch dessen selbstreflexive Unterwanderung auf. Die Beiträge in diesem Band widmen sich diesem neuen Naturbezug in der Popkultur und thematisieren dabei u.a. New Weird America und Festivalkultur, Autorenfilme und »Avatar«, Indie Folk und Vollbärte sowie Neuinterpretationen von Klassikern wie Vashti Bunyan oder Ken Kesey.
